Joy enchants Lee Hyun-woo with her voice in the Liar and His Lover

I must say I’m pretty impressed with this first glimpse at Red Velvet’s Joy singing for her new drama, The Liar His Lover. Starring Lee Hyun-woo (Moorim School) as the titular Liar, this upcoming youth rom-com is about a brilliant musician becomes enchanted, at first note, by a voice that inspires him like no other. The owner of this extraordinary voice is an ordinary female high school student (Joy), who in turn falls in love at first sight with this genius composer who hides his real identity from her.
Not going to lie—I definitely went on a Youtube spree to watch all of Joy’s live singing clip compilations after watching this teaser, which devolved into a half-marathon of We Got Married. So after this joyful (hur) detour, I’m optimistically looking forward to her debut drama project.
Lee Jung-jin (The K2) plays a character whose nickname is “Midas of Songs.” He’s the type of producer who’s great at spotting and polishing a diamond in the rough. Because he recognizes the importance of both artistic and market value, he was able to launch Choi Yoo-na, played by musical theater actress Hong Seo-young (Dorian Gray), from the idol band Crude Play into international stardom. Her fellow bandmate will be played by Lee Seo-won (Uncontrollably Fond), who is featured in the recently released still cuts with his bass guitar in hand, rocking out like a pro.
The teaser shows the two main characters in a studio room together. When Joy starts singing, Lee Hyun-woo’s expression becomes soft and warm, although after the last line in her song (“If only I had told that person… who left on a long journey”), he cuts off the sound and asks her sternly, “Did you even practice? Do it again.” But then he swivels his chair around and smiles as he listens to her singing again.
Monday-Tuesday tvN drama The Liar and His Lover will begin airing this March after the conclusion of Introverted Boss.

I hate hate hate how there were loads of post every week from her debut fat-shaming her (and seungwannie) about her weight. It got especially bad during Dumb Dumb promotions. I don't care how "bright" and confident she is, she's a young girl. In 2015, she was 18-19. I hate how much stress she got over it. We know how much she worries all the time, and she reads bad comments too. I wished I could meet her and tell her she didn't have to lose weight.

@Iris me too. Back then, her hormones were acting up. She gained weight & had acne because of it and people just trashed on her. It was awful. She suffered and worried so much. Probably cried too knowing her. I'm almost glad she lost weight just to shut up haters, but I wished she didn't have to. It's so sad how cruel people are.

looooooooooool I have no idea if she's actress material (a bit worried tbh), but she's definitely girl crush material. I'm into male idols more than girl groups, but I remember failing her try not to fangirl challenge video. She's crazy charming for sure, as to if that will translate into her role, I'm not sure. It will help that the description of the character kind of sounds like she'll be acting as herself so I hope she will be serviceable.

veah, she's super complex, so I'm wondering what version of her we'll get in the drama. Sure, she can be super cute and a lot like the magnae, but she's also thoughtful and feminine inside. But rather than all of that, I hope we get to see her as Joysus slash "Satan Joy." Girl can be sassy and savage af. Please let Satan Joy make her appearance in the drama, even if just a bit. Funny it's your favourite live because she gave an interview in a magazine before, and she said her voice was gone for a week before that Sketchbook episode, and she was sick during that week of promotions for One of these nights too. She confessed in the interview that after the rehearsal for Sketchbook she cried so much downstage because of her losing her voice because she wanted to do her best and couldn't.

tineybeanie (I never noticed the "e" in "tine" before writing it out SHOOOOOCKKK.), don't just half marathon We Got Married, I recommend the full course for u. It definitely gets better towards the end and is last 10-15 episodes are the best ones, and in case u miss out, the last two episodes director's cut (nearly double the time of the broadcasted version) are on YouTube, and there are about 8 pre-episode clips total, and multiple unaired clips for each episodes too. Hee.

Hmmm.... I've thought about the reason I'm so attached to them when I hardly ever ship, simply because that's asking for heartbreak, statistically speaking. Thing is, Sungjae looks good with anyone he's paired with, from actresses like PSH, KSH, KYJ, to idols like OMG, Apink, Kara, to models (I especially like the new Akiii model). And SooYoung has great chemi with all the dudes she's with (got7, eunwoo, seulong, etc.) So I kept wondering what made this ship special and I think I got the answer. It's because both are bright kids, leaning on the crazy side, and whenever Sj&J are together, it brings a smile to watch their antics and how both feed off each other. Laughing is addicting. that said, both are still too young to think about love so I'll just watch them fondly, but I won't put much expectations on it. I'm not masochistic. Cheh.

the only bad thing about their time on WGM was how people said Sungjae was too cold. Sungjae is the tsundere type but if people thought about it, she's the one who received all the surprise events. He did loads of them for her, from small moments at the bowling or bathroom, or bigger ones.

I agree. Sungjae was flustered so many times to have been indifferent. He held it in a lot out of consideration (manner hands pro), but that consideration itself showed he was aware. Plus I think he's a natural player, but so is she a natural flirt. Sungjae became expressive of his feelings a bit better in the end though. And even when WGM ended, Sungjae became a lot more expressive (like saying thanks in the Flower Celeb Bromance episodes) so he benefited from filming WGM I think.

About what you said. Sungjae might appear to be carefree, but he's super observant. We can tell how aware he is of her because throughout WGM, he probably took away eyelashes, strands of hair, and food from a face at least a dozen times, even when it looks like he wasn't even looking at her.

Exactly. Sungjae might appear hard-to-get, but he was the one who said all the cheesy lines, and expressed his affection to her (like that he's thankful, that he enjoys being with her, first to confess etc.). It just went over people's head because he was playing cool when he said those lines so it didn't register in the viewers' head. I think he was just embarrassed. He's a good actor but he acts different when he's in acting mode and when he's himself.
Back to topic, I hope LHW will have great chemi with her. I want to love this drama. It's tvn, looking forward to kiss scenes too. Don't disappoint me, Drama.

Sungjae might be a kid at heart (toddler), but he's a lot more mature and thoughtful than people give him credit for. He's just super subtle about it, taking care of her reputation (she's the only girl he was paired with whom he didn't mention or promote their work together on his SNS), protecting her, cheering her up, supporting her but knowing limits and respecting her and being careful about skinship, etc. But people just want big gestures, and he's too shy for that.

He is a lot more careful about things related to her outside of filming than he is about other girls, even idols. People take that as indifference, but I take it as thoughtfulness. She had a lot of hate comments when WGM began, so I think he kept that in mind even now.
PPyu/BByu couple is about being themselves and happy together, with moments of lowkey giddiness (I find it cute that those moments are always too much for them so the joked about it immediately after to mask their shyness. xoxoxox). People who wanted a grand romance, or fast relationship, or couldn't observe the small gestures didn't like the couple.

As for the Liar and his Lover... I'll be honest, I have a bad feeling tvn will screw this up. I love the manga, and the film even more. tvN haven't had a good streak lately, and I don't want this drama to be Cinderella and the 4 knights. I hope I'm proven wrong.

He did, didn't he? Sungjae's not the type to say "I like you" out loud, but he's definitely a romantic deep down. He kept believing Joy would connect with him, and kept saying things like "do we need words to understand each other" and "I believe we have the same thoughts and thinking." He also kept expecting her to cling to him, and whined when she didn't or wasn't acting romantic. It's cute. He's just bad at expressing it explicitly.

I kept silent previously because of the understandable negative feelings in the other posts (I'm scared she'll be bad too) but I felt a lot more encouraged to comment here after seeing a positive post. Because as much as I love her, I still don't know whether she'll be good so I was afraid writing about her other good points would have been irrelevant to the drama. Shipping is nice and fun, until people take it much too seriously and can't tell wishful thinking apart from reality. I ship them in that I would be happy for them because I think it's a suitable match, but I would be fine if nothing happened. I'm seeing some people become too emotional just because of their ship, and that's a no-no to me. It's disturbing. Imposing the will of shippers on the two is selfish, neither owes shippers for anything. And it goes for the opposite point. I don't like it when people use the "too many cameras around" or visible editing of clips as a reason for it to be fake. People can develop bonds in front of cameras too, especially when those people are used to cameras, what's with reality shows for idols being filmed constantly. If there's chemistry, there's chemistry. Friendships have been formed in variety shows, and reality shows before. And it's possible to have feelings but not pursue it further. I just think of the show as celebrities playing make-believe and indulging in flirting. Ooops. Didn't intend to rant on WGM here.
Hoping the best for this drama, but I don't want to have too much expectation. I just don't want a cringe fest.

Makes sense actually. I wouldn't be surprised if Eunji and Seulgi wanted to move on from high school roles at this point. Plus, I bet LHW was casted first, being the bigger name, which means he would have to be older than the female actress. And the drama wouldn't do much for their careers at this point. It's cable, not prime-time, and at first reported to be a mini-drama. I wouldn't be surprised if the roles would have been declined had it been offered.

Eunji's voice is rich in a breathy sense, with strong support. Joy's voice is not powerful but still full in its clear sound. It's quite an interesting voice.

If it is per manga or even the movie,
the female character is supposed to have a distinct tone (not to say Eunji don't) and she is supposed to be a raw singer who mostly sings on the street.
Which is why she has been recruited to the entertainment company and debut under Mush&Co. So, Joy being a raw singer with a distinct voice, actually fit the character. So I don't get the complain aside from the 'acting' which we haven't seen yet (totally understandable to be worried on). but, Sakura Ohara (Japan version) has also never tried acting before the movie itself. So the casting in a way probably makes sense if people stop being so negative.
Beauty is subjective, and being a casual listener of Red Velvet, I have always found Joy to be a looker (a growing one) and definitely have the visuals.
I have been waiting for this drama ever since they announced the remake and even more since they announced the director. Casting choices, I will watch it first before leaving any comments..

SM has been produced few outstanding (but several serviceable) idols-actors, and even more if past SM-idols are counted... so the worries are understandable. But the dig on looks is not worth replying I think. It's a matter of taste + the best looking people aren't necessarily the ones who suit the roles best.

Same here. I love Sungjae after School 2015 so I watched his WGM cuts & loved it. I usually just watch dramas but Sungjae made me watch a variety show. Still can't get over taekwang & his tragic love.

Yeah, right. Just that, I pitied his character in School 2015. How can the girl not choose him? His way way better than the main lead. I like Nam Joo Hyuk, but I love Yook Seung Jae character more.
Going back with him and Joy, they are really cute together. Their voices have a good blending too. They can act for a drama and sing its own OST too.. Please drama gods, reunion for this two.. Jebal..

I saw the comment above of wanting another idol to act in this role but I think there's no harm in wanting a new face since she doesn't have any previous performance and she got in from an audition,
Lee Hyun Woo has a baby face and it's hard to find another actress who can look younger than him.

I think the criteria are more than just singing
- Idol who has an interest in acting &
- Idol of the right age &
- Idol who auditioned for the role &
- Idol who can sing &
- Idol with a distinct & fresh & clear tone &
- Idol who fit the characters' image &
- Idol who fit LHW &
as mercenary as this sounds...
- Idol with enough star power to lead
It's like Eunji or Hyeri from other tvn dramas. Apink and GD were well-known groups at the time of their casting. Investors casting a known idol is logical. It brings in interest to their dramas. Same with web-dramas. Ones with well-known idols have much more views than those not well-known. & in the comments section for the teasers for Liar & Lover, both on Naver and in YouTube, most comments in Korean are about her, the top comments are also about her, which means her casting is doing its job and bringing in viewers.

yep. I don't have much interest in kpop so I was kinda surprised to see how her teaser got more views than Hyunwoo's on Naver. I hope she does well for Hyunwoo's sake. Coming out of lurker mode just to say - Fighting Park Sooyoung! I really like Joy ever since WGM, she's got spunk and charm which I think elevates her looks because well, she's not the stereotypical tiny, demure, dainty-looking idol (ex. Irene). While I'm hoping just as much as everyone that she acts well, if her Sorim character is the straightforward girl type, I think its gonna be a good fit especially after her WGM stint. I wish her ex-hubby Yook Sungjae would make a cameo on this show, that would be awesome!
Also, if you wanna check out more of Joy, please try Always in My Heart video. She did a duet with Im Seulong (2AM, Hogu's Love, Mrs. Cop 2) and despite the considerable age gap, their chemistry was so cute! Despite being a Bbyu shipper, I loved Joy and Seulong! And the song was so good too! Honey voices!

Hi Liz! I saw the Vlive too, they were funny! I actually kinda wish Seulong played the lead in this drama but since this version of The Liar and His Lover is more of a teen/youth drama, I guess Seulong is a little too mature.

A lot of people on DB don't like watching wgm so people tend to keep quiet about it. :') if I recall correctly, in one of the open threads before Goblin aired, several people outed themselves as shippers and shared fmv links. that's when I knew there were fellow closet shippers on this site like me.

Joy might be my ultimate bias in kpop -- or at the very least, in my top 3 bias... But I just have the feeling she will not be excellent in acting. From what I've seen of her play-acting here and there, for fun and seriously, if her role works out well, I'm predicting it will be mostly because of her personal charm rather than any extraordinary acting skill. A bit similar to Siwon like you mentioned (he's not in my ultimate bias list but I'm a certified ELF) in his early days. That wouldn't bother me as long as her acting is serviceable, and I get attached to her character one way or another (charm being a big factor). But I'm predicting a bunch of folks will not like it, especially when there's already a prejudice. My utmost wish though, is that she turns out to be a genius, but I somehow doubt it. And yes, I am actually her huge fan, as strange as that sounds. :D

So many comments on WGM. lol. I don't watch that show religiously so my opinion doesn't count for much but I agree with the comments about Sungjoy/Bbyu being cute together. Not a shipping person, but if I were, I would ship them.
Rather than LHW, I'm looking forward to LSW. I've only seen him in UF but he made a good impression. I might have SLS but who knows.
About the voice comments... I'm one of those people who underestimated her voice. I didn't get all the fans who were in love with her voice (I still think SG is the best in RV) until that Bruno Mars Marry U duet she did with Sungjae. He's the better singer but I kept being drawn to her voice in that perf (not live). I noticed her voice more than his (Not a diss on him. He just harmonized and supported her well so she stood out more). On the other hand, Seulong has a pretty voice so in her duet with Seulong, I heard Seulong's voice more.

LOL. thanks for the links. I haven't watched that live version of Ma litel in ages. It's so funny how Sungjae kept wanting to cover her up. He gave her the cushion to cover up her skirt at least 5 times. She didn't even care about it. LOL. If you watch the broadcast condensed version, it shows that both were alone in the room in the first half of the show (there were no one in the kitchen and living room, the staff was probably set up in the bedroom or next door) and the staff joined them for the second half.

Personally, I still don't think they match visually. Both are extremely attractive but he's just soooo baby-faced lol. She matches someone a bit more mature looking (even if they're around her age).

Welp I've seen the best and worst of reactions to Joy. People love criticizing everything from her looks and singing to practically her existence....A lot of comments in the posts related to this drama and Joy are incredibly immature and exhausting to read. I just don't understand why some people have such a burning desire to bash someone they don't even know. At the end of the day Joy will still be a successful celebrity landing roles, singing and dancing...Bashing her won't change that.
I do admit though my expectations for this drama are somewhat low. The teasers are pretty cheesy and nothing has really drawn me in. Hopefully it delivers.

Well-said. Anyway, had her "huge" head been true, it's such a fresh and charming one, I would have it in a heartbeat.
And I'll bend to level and add that I would rather have the least attractive face I've ever met, than go around having a personality this shallow and empty. I'd would rather be unattractive physically than have my mind filled with so much ugliness and negativity. Putting down others on the basis of their physical appearance. Shudders. Life is too beautiful to be wasted on those train of thoughts.

bashing her won't change that, or have one bit of significance in anything but trolls are trolls. it's not about the bashing, it's about the bashing giving the troll the attention someone as uninteresting as it wouldn't have had otherwise.

Delurking once more after going through the thread -- I am happy to see a lot of Joy lovers -- I think most of us are genuinely rooting for her especially after seeing her charm in WGM. Like I said in my previous comment, girl's got a lot of spunk and I love how spirited and straightforward she is compared to the more demure and dainty idol girls which makes her more likeable (hence the 100+ comments now).
I am just a little saddened by the bashers -- especially over her looks and singing. So definitely, the looks bashing while shallow it is subjective because beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. But Joy sings really well! It has been acknowledged by netizens that she has a "honey voice"and while technically, Wendy and Seulgi has got her beat in their group, she definitely is a better singer than other female idols who just dance or aegyo their way in the business. She's a good singer and even an able rapper.
Now acting wise -- I have to wait and see before judging. I am praying she does well and that she surprises us all. She has a good character for variety shows so I hope she does well too as an actress.

aw. don't be saddened, the comments regarding her looks are definitely not worth it. being saddened because of them just give them undeserved significance. being provoked from blatant intentional malice for the sake of malice is just like taking a toddler seriously and bringing it to the adult's table to discuss politics. so not worth it. lol.
as for non-trolls' opinions, her appearance and voice are subjective. she can have thousands who like her voice, and still have people who don't like it. it doesn't invalidate their taste, nor should it affect yours. discussion on something that is purely a matter of taste can go on forever, and people's taste would just be their taste. :')

I'm not familiar with her voice except for that snippet in the teaser so not enough to judge (and don't intend to until the drama airs. I don't want to spoil myself.). So I don't know if this is relevant to what's discussed here, forgive me if it's not, but according to the manga, it was really about her voice more than the technique. The idea was that her raw singing, high-pitch tone, showed how singing with emotions, voice that could connect, and make the melody stand out more than someone with perfect technique could. At one point, she loses her voice but the emotions were full there, blah blah blah. You get the gist. If Joy is as weak as you said, do you think it was cast on purpose?

Joy is weak but she is good with emotional delivery because of her vocal color so that's probably why they chose her and not other idols/actresses with stronger voices.
