Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 27-Mar. 5, 2017

Now that Hwarang’s out of the picture, new kid on the block Perfect Wife managed meager numbers at best, starting out at 3.9% and ending the week just barely under 5%. It’s tough to compete against Defendant, which again broke its own records by reaching 23.3% this week, though it dropped just a fraction for its even episode. But for its part, Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People is paving its own path, and at 12.5%, it’s nothing to sniff at. (It’s also a fun show to watch!)

In the middle of the week, it’s no news that Chief Kim continues to dominate, while Missing 9 continues to sag behind. Saimdang, Light’s Diary hovers below the double digit mark and sometimes manages to reach it—though it’s clear that those high opening numbers it saw will never be seen again. Alas, hype only accounts for so much—you have to entertain your audience to win them over.

Meanwhile, over on the weekend, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon is doing gangbusters for JTBC, and is bringing the network the kind of numbers it hasn’t seen in a while. I couldn’t be happier—not only is it a quality show that’s fun to watch, but Dramahouse is producing it, and they’re normally behind the prestige projects that I end up loving to death, but they usually end up netting lower numbers. This seems like a win/win for those who love a good romcom and a good quality drama, so here’s hoping they keep it up!

So happy with how fast DBS is rising! Truly deserving and congrats.

I enjoyed the newly premiered Father is Strange. Leave it to KBS to produce good family dramas, they're experiencing high ratings too.

Introverted Boss has improved a little but the ratings pretty much stuck there, as for Tomorrow with you. TVN must be in shocked HAHA. Missing9's rating is dipping like it's weird plot aha.

And OCN's voice is pretty steady. Who would have thought that we would see a day JTBC and OCN beats TVN?!

I dont really mind with another hit like Goblin, but sincerely I hope they will maintain the good quality drama although it is not something hit. TVN started this year with so-so drama interm of rating and quality, and i am not sure if The Liar and His Lover willl be able to garner the attention but I want to have hope for Chicago Typewriter and Circle will be able to.After all these two drama have solid casts hopefully the production and writing are both solid too.

Me too. I actually love all the Mon-Tues dramas. It can't be helped for Introverted Boss to have low ratings, it's a touch competion. Defendant and Rebel have both awesome plots.

0

Maybe Chicago Typewriter or Circle both sounds interesting.

The Bride of Water could've bulled high ratings if they have more experienced cast and a saeguk setting, but who knows what will happen!

BOTWG has a really strong writer-PD team, though, and the cast isn't terrible even if I want better .

I'm VERY sceptical after the setting change but I hope it turns out well. Otherwise there's always the manhwa!

Im enjoying DBS especially park hyungsik. That guy really can command attention. I am hoping the writer doesng go to clumsy girl type cause sometimes DBS is strong, and witty, but some part she is way too clumsy with her power. I am glad that more and more cable tv dramas have high ratings. So that means, we will see more and more of them. It will give opportunities to more actors to shine. Most of major network only hire big names lead. Cable tvs often give chance to newbies / less appreciated but talented actors.

holymagickarp! Strong Woman Do Bong Soon hitting 8.3%!!!! It's such a joy to watch. Park Hyung Shik and Park Bo Young are adorable. I wondered at first if Park Hyung Sik deserved the male lead more than Jisoo, and after watching the first four episode, he truly does. I like Jisoo, but it was a little hard to watch Jisoo in the first two episodes (I can't really pinpoint if it's because of him, the character, or both) but he and his character is growing on me this week.

This! It's so sad to say that Ji Soo is the weakest link in this group (okay, the editor is even worse) but all in all, it's shaping up to be quite a crack-y drama.

And Park Bo Young FTW! Please don't leave dramaland for too long anymore.

The first two episodes got me thinking if he had been just really lucky to get roles similar to his personality before this one. I haven't finished Moon Lovers, but on the first 6 episodes, I thought he did okay.

This show is sooooo cute. That part where they were on the phone talking after Bong Soon's drunk night is that cutest thing.

I dont catch up with epi 3 and 4 yet, but I secretly wish Ji Soo's role has some twist. Maybe he is a baddie or anything that unpredictable.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

The thing with Ji-soo is that he's best suited to roles where he gets really intense emotional scenes/characters (see: Angry Mom, Sassy Go Go, even the handful of scenes in Moon Lovers where he actually got something to do).

And DBS is just not that kind of role for him, though I must say I like him as the straight-arrow cop a LOT better than as the stubborn puppy prince in Scarlet Heart (where I basically wanted to drown him until the final episode came along and reminded me why I liked him). He's starting to settle into the role a little better, but he works very nicely as the straight man to Park Hyung-shik's trolling.

Required fields are marked *

I liked him in Angry Mom. SGG, Page Turner, he was okay in Fantastic but i felt he's too young for the role, I watched few episodes of SH so I can't judge him there, but in this drama he's uncomfortable to watch, now that I look at the dramas he's been in all his roles are the same, this role is new maybe that's why, hope he gets better later.

The thing is, he made such a strong impression right out of the gate and in more than one project, that it took a while to see where he hit his limits - which, for him, is a difficulty presenting as mature/adult.

I do think that's a problem that can be solved with time, and him consciously taking non-teenager roles and not doing leads, is a step in the right direction. I'd be much more worried if he couldn't emote.

0

In Fantastic, he definitely looked so green compared to those experienced actors. Honestly if he didnt paired with Park Shi Yeon I wont even care about his existence. But imo his current character and with the one in Fantastic quite the same and not much difference, he is a rookie detective who uphold justice (in Fantastic he played rookie lawyer who also uphold justice) so supposedly he would know how to approach the character already.

0

I thought Jisoo did "adult" very well in his guest appearances on Doctors. I think the problem is he has earnest nailed, but he's just trying to blend in a bit of "dumbass" and that's a struggle. Also, Park Hyung-sik is nailing his part and taking things up a notch more than expected. From the behind the scenes clip I saw, the two of them have good working chemistry so if their relationship becomes less antagonistic I think it'll smooth things over.

0

Jisoo has been playing young in most of his other characters that it's hard to get my head wrapped around him playing a macho adult cop.

Required fields are marked *

I am really liking DBS but I agree with you and really feel like the editing is the weak link. It sometimes feels all over the place. I've only seen episodes 1 and 2 so I am hoping things smooth out a bit more. But there have been a couple instances where me and my family were a little confused because of the wonky editing.

Ji Soo so far is ok. I love him but he does feel a little boring and unsuited to the role.

But PBY and PHS are nailing their roles.

After watched him in first two episodes, I found him still limited in term of acting. He is not stiff, sigh I just dont know how to desribe it. But he seems quite unnatural, and he likes someone who is rebelling. Haha. I maybe wrong. I liked him in Sassy GG, and was pleased with him as cameo in Doctors but I didnt care with his character in this drama yet, except when he was dressed as woman lol. It looks to me it is quite a gap between him and Park Hyun Sik in acting.

I totally understand how hard it is to describe Jisoo's acting. It's weird... I feel like his character's stickler to the rules attitude could have come off in a more hilarious manner had a more experienced (or had a wider range of expression) actor. Instead, the character became a little annoying. I can't understand why Bong Soo likes him actually. Because so far, not even his handsome face is worth the years of unrequited love.

"An idealistic rookie detective who is passionate about justice."

It is his character's description in Wiki. So i think it is due to his approach. My first thought was his character kind of rude and mean, but his approach made his every action seems a bit forceful. I was like closing my eyes when I saw him in a serious mode because his face quite unbearable to watch. Hopefully he gets better and more natural with his role.

0

Yes!! I agree and I have nothing against the guy but I felt like this while watching Moon Lover's as well....it's like - he can play the high school roles REALLY well but once he's in mature/adult territory, it's almost like he's too stiff and too awkward...like he doesn't really know how to play a more serious and mature character...

I think it's just lack of experience..in good time, I'm sure he'll hone in this skill. I do realize though that I don't think he's a natural - I'm not saying he's bad, but I feel like he's the type of actor that gets better with more acting work, practicing and working on his insufficiencies ...I know he said himself, he never wanted to go into acting, he just happened to audition with a friend and got the part....

I didnt finish SH but based on few episodes I watched, he was quite terrible. Again he was not alone lacking in term of dept. in that drama.

I dont know it is lack of experience or he needs more acting class. Since he just graduated from high school drama, maybe better do college drama for next project. :)

0

yeah, that makes sense - all the projects where he was good have been youth dramas, but despite being in his 20s he still comes off so young that adult roles don't seem to fit him as well as teenage ones.

But it's nothing that time and practice can't fix, because at least he showed some potential in the first place. His straight-arrow character here does seem a bit of a caricature, but I like him better here than in his last drama.

(and I hope to goodness he's taking care of his health)

0

Agree with all u guys poin out. I hav aspft spot for him too. He shines in Sassy and in Page Turner.
I thk an actor cant take thwir character description too literally and i felt he approached this In guk do character in a vy stuffy n stiffling manner. So evythg feels force n off. Hes nt injecting any of his own take n charm so his character feels vy one dimensional n it glaringly stands out bcoz Park Bo Young is killing it. Park Hyun Sik is doin wonders with both subtle and kooky acting. I hope he takes the time to grow, lots of room for improvement

0

I have liked Ji-Soo from Angry Mom and have watched quite a few dramas that he was in. I had high expectations for SWDBS because I like PBY, PHS and JS all. After 4 episodes, I still love this drama but I have to say JS is not delivering his best acting so far. His role as GD is basically no difference from his role in Fantastic and it feels like he just copies and pastes from one role to another. I still like him though, but I hope he can take a break after SWDBS finishes. He really needs to spend some good time congesting all his roles and then get rid of them to have a fresh start.

I absolutely ADORE tomorrow with you, and it's such a shame that people won't watch this show lol. It's almost like a japanese drama, we see the struggles that goes on in marital life, and song jo hoon is amazing as a character who at times has problem to understand his wife, (at present time and in future), but then again he has his own problems to deal with too, since future is always a factor he can't ignore. Lee Je Hoon is surprisingly great in portraying a romantic role, and because his character has so much depth and comes with lot of emotional baggage, the nuance is visible in LJH's face. At times I almost feel like his relation with Shin Mina is for real, that's how good the chemistry is. It's stupid that the drama is not getting the due credit, sigh.
Anyway I don't think a good drama has anything to do with ratings, so I would say I'm happy that TWY happened. More power to LJH-Shin Mina, and the story, of course.

I personally dont find the need to watch the next episode after watching one too. It is basically a show which at this stage is easy to drop but still when i do watch an episode i do feel like it was good and atleast not boring. But yes i do think the show is not keeping us intrigued. The viewers almost know everything, the characters dont which makes things draggy. It is still a show I prefer to watch while sipping tea and relaxing because even if i think the writer wants us to think, thinking makes the loopholes more apparent.

TWY honestly dont belong to everyone and only a small of group of audiences will be able to appreciate it. Probably it works better if it is movie, imo.

is it just me, or is shin min ah's character getting irritatingly daft! she's like the most overly delusional and stupidly slow character ever. i mean, come on! she asks her husband to tell her his secrets and when he does tell her about time travelling she completely lost it, calling him a big fat liar! i seriously loved her in gumiho but as song ma rin, she's just painful to watch.

I agree with you! The reason I stopped watching the show for now is because of her character. I can't seem to get to love her. I love the story, as well as the actors. What I don't like most about her is the fact that she still keeps hanging out with her "friend" eventhough she knows that nothing good will come out from it.

"it’s such a shame that people won’t watch this show lol"

I don't think people won't watch the show, they did premier with 3,9% rating and lost half of the audience

if you asked me why I stop care
- because there's no upside
this is the same case with saimdang, drama need to have the moment when the protagonist have a little bit hope for the better future, in saimdang, she literally climb from the bottom with very small minor success and that makes it appear boring, no variation,

in the case with TMY, they just keep having a problem and there's no hope for them to win, practically there is, it just the show doesn't show that point.
every week is a quarrel and they don't learn from it,
it the same mistake all over again,
I am not saying love conquer it all but at least, a protagonist can learn and the story can be about something else besides how these people are unmatched, who somehow will match without the little win moment each episode,

chief Kim is an underdog story with the larger cast but the team have a payback momentum when you feel like it worth the wait, the protagonist and the fate will have some sense to give a sense of satisfaction.
but in TMY, they keep into trouble, making similar repeated mistake of communication and it just redundant now.

Lovers and couple fight but we don't need to see it every week because now it has less impact and the result of repeated lies come off as insincere.

I don't even think this is J-drama style, TMY ends with a conclusion that people already know so there's no revealing (for the main couple), they just talk it out every single week which makes it redundant and boring at this point.

At one point, I actually hope that LJH chara didn't like her at all which can make this a very sad heartbreaking story.

I think the opposite. the story is engaging. you might have problrm with the slow pace with i agree with. i wish they are tone down the otp moment abit and give the supporting character a better proper development and stop being mysterious keep viewers in the dark at this stage. but even then the character development feel makes sense.

I do wish several character given by a more capable actor. several actor is just can't rise the material they are given. i miss a drama like Uncontrallably fond that has an all round good acting for an important supporting role.

0

BOF - she is singlehandedly the biggest dissapointment in that drama.. and that drama is full of faults..

I have yet to see an actress across all genres and all countries who can push her from being no.2 on horrible actress of all times.. No.1 ofcourse is the female lead from Playful kiss ( watched her on variety knowing brothers.. and i guess she is like that.. she can not act .. come what may)

Just watched Father is Weird, and I already love the drama already. I dont know what is weird about Kim Young Chul ahjusshi for now, but so far he is playing a fatherly father that I love. And the kimbap he made looks super yummeh. Love Kim Hae Sok as his wife too.

I already on board with the four siblings and their bickerings : two are troublemakes, the other two are good children. hehe. And Lee Yoo Ri is perfect as eldest daughter. Bold, sassy and kind of psyco lol (like what her sister said) and she is fashionable too. I know some viewers want to tune in because of Lee Joon and Jung So Min, and some questioned are they the main leads. Dont worry, weekend family drama normally have many main casts, and those two are part of the main casts. As long as the main leads dont turn like "Our Gabsoon" it will be fine. JSM seems like a nice girl and daughter but not naive (I will fine for nice girl as long as not naive like the one in Laurel Tree Tailor)
Excited for next epi.

Though when I watched Yul hiding his gleeful smile after destroying Chief Kim and team's revival plan presentation, I'm thinking it was his personal choice to join the bad side.

From ep 1 to date, we're privy to his penchant for winning. He probably felt his job as a prosecutor wasn't fulfilling that innate desire/talent enough. Thus, the move to the bad side, where he felt he could win bigger and better; properly utilizing his skills and goals . However, he found that it still didn't make him happy. As we have seen from his lonely drunken nights in the last 2 episodes and reinforced in his talk with Ha Kyung at the hospital.

Working as a prosecutor wont give him the power he desires, since he still need to obey his superior. Unlike in this company, when he is among the main executives which means he is holding the power.

The greed and power is like the silkworm: the more it wraps in its cocoon, the less it has of escaping from it, until it dies of grief.

What a great turn of phrase!

And applicable to what's unfolding in REBEL. Even if it doesn't die of grief, it will end up in hot water. ;-)

Holy moly! JTBC must be over the moon because of SWDBS's numbers. They're crazy! 8.3% would even be a smash hit for tvN, but JTBC?! Wowza! This seems to be JTBC's year and that makes me happy. Last year they had such quality shows, from Mirror of the Witch to Age of Youth to This Week My Wife Will Have an Affair. I also heard Ms. Temper was good but did not watch it, same with Solomon's Perjury.

I'm happy to see the rise of JTBC! OCN hasn't been doing too shabby on the ratings front lately, either. If broadcast companies thought just tvN was a threat, they have to be even more careful now. And then who knows how Netflix will shake up the drama landscape! Times are a-changing 'round these parts and I'm excited to see what the next couple of years bring.

Can confirm Ms. Temper was very good. It was more of a Misaeng vibe type show focused on the workplace struggles than the romcom it was advertised as.

This is weird but I'm following all the recapped shows and Perfect Wife is one of the shows I'm excited to know what happens in the next ep. And I can't even explain why. :/

I am looking forward to PW too. I dont know what made me interested but so far it is intriguing. And I was very grateful the recap was fast last week. Initially I thought this drama will not get recapped here. I feel like this drama can get higher rating although wont be able to beat other two shows.

"can't even explain why"

Yeah, me too. I think it has to do with the utter lack of expectations ( and interest on my part) that people approached Perfect Wife. I'm really happy with the story I've been given so far and I'm curious to see where it leads. Plus Sung Joon is finding his inner Wack n'dork.

It also helps that the two lead actress( The wife and Perfect McCreeps) are beautiful. *sighs at her own superficiality*.

Yes! Finally Sung Joon is back in a role that actually interests me AND even has cute chemistry with the leading lady. This is the most I've liked him since Can We Get Married, Shut up Flower Boy Band etc.

Has jtbc ever acheived those numbers? I remember a show called maids getting 5%. It is great for the channel and makes me think that Man to man will be able to acheive the same too.

Twy's ratings are sad. Now that cable can reach 20 which i think might be roughly equal to 35-36, 1 % is too low. The show for me is still light and breezy and i totally get how it may not be everyone's type.

Missing 9 is missing all the flags. KBS would have curtail its wings but thankfully its on MBC

I was waiting Father is Weird and You are too Much - Both look more interesting than other weekend dramas. Their opening weekend no. are quite good compared to "gap soon" n "take care of you".

JTBC has hit Jackpot and TVN started new year pretty badly. That will shake TVN's management a bit.

Chief Kim has no competition at all as saimdang has chalked its own path. Saimdang and Rebel targeted different spectrum of audience and hence survived.

Father I'll Take Care of You is facing some difficulty to rise more. Even the even episode on Sunday didnt got much higher than Saturday's. The story is enjoyable to watch but maybe lack of addicting elements or not so Makjang like most of MBC weekend drama for eg the recently ended Blow Breeze. You're Too Much probably will be able to rise more and more.

A lot of people on that show REALLY annoy me. It's approaching "screw all of you, you're all terrible people" actually. And that includes pretty much ALL the parents. Lee Tae-hwan is struggling with a boring character. I practically cheered when he got some meaty, emotional material in the most recent couple episodes because he really DELIVERED.

Honestly I'm spoiled, the long form series I actually watched before were What's With this Family and Five Kids, and quite a bit of Laurel St Tailors (before I dropped it for other reasons) and this show's quality is really not up there.

I love the show to bits and I have to admit that the plot is nothing amazing and has a lot of fillers/unnecessary scenes. Although I think that's where they succeeded because it only aims to be a comedy/feel good drama at the end of the day.

I can see where you would think it's all over the place but I actually think there's a bit of a plan. We've got this really scary serial abductor plotline and I think that the three leads need to sort of circle each other and chip off each others' rough edges for a bit before they fuse into a crime-fighting team.

Happy for do bong soon,
I just watch the latest episode and the comedy for me is kinda weird, I definitely like it but I see how people don't get it,
it's on your face, no need to think much because they presented as it is,

The character is really weird, there's a lot if instances that I don't agree with them, like all of their decision, guk doo that is too uneasy and stiff to bong soon, like he is on edge all the time,
bong soon who is too carefree for what she worth and min hyuk who somehow believe too much of himself and don't believe in other people.
Then I watch them and I just like seeing them being silly, like a sitcom with a romantic background, this is about do bong soon and her antics, either it's about the criminal she beats up or the high schooler that on awe for her ability.

It felt since and real because they show unlikable trait but unconsciously showed how likable they were. I know it's weird explanation but that's what I felt. They are not the worst or the very best people in the world, they are living in their own world with their own set of problem.

Saimdang: I think they could get a better rating if saimdang start doing things to fix her life like this week, making the paper and revealing the secret.
Let her free cause I think that is what most of the audience want to see and what the story better do, to see the feisty saimdang by lee young ae. Anyway, I miss the present time.

That's just the thing about Strong Woman Do Bong-soon - characters don't have to be perfect people to draw the viewer in, they just have to be interesting.

Protagonists are allowed to have flaws! Yay!

Though am not watching Strong Woman, Tomorrow With You etc, I think that sometimes, viewers can be impatient with characters that have flaws. Later on, we may look back and be like, " wow, so glad to see his come a long way, character growth was wonderful, yada yada yah", but the initial episodes are usually not forgiving. Go back to the first 4-6 episode recaps of some beloved shows and you'll see what I'm talking about e.g IU in The Producers.

Anyway, I think its too early to categorize characters. I have a feeling their a lot more dynamic than they appear, yes even Ji Soo.

That's why sometimes I prefer to start the drama after it finished airing or at least half drama so I can marathon it without waiting for days for next episodes. Human is impatient.

I am waiting for Voice to finish before start it. Looks like maybe I will wait Saimdang to finish before pick up it again.

I'm a serial Marathoner, no two ways about it! And I prefer to be about 6 episodes in before I start reading recaps because I don't want to be influenced by people's opinions.

@Flightey Gazelles, your comment sounds like an echo of the voice in my head about not rushing to judgement on the characters, specifically of SWBDS right now. I read a comment above and thought, huh, six episodes from now we very well may be saying "oh THAT'S why Guk Doo is so stiff/cold/whatever, now I get it" as we so often do.

Something similar is happening on the Missing 9 thread where there are lots of comments about how annoyed we became at 'all the plot holes' only to find now (at the almost end) that the story is being stitched up pretty neatly and showing that there was indeed a master plot plan from the start. Impressive! And unusual. Can't really blame people for bailing on the show because we've been left high and dry more often than not (Hwarang much?) but it's fun for those who stuck it out.

The thing is, it's not like having a flaw or 2 makes someone/a character a "bad" person, but all too often, there are viewers who dislike or even hate on a lead for not being the typical (boring) Mr./Ms. "Perfect"/"Goody-two Shoes."

Flaws not only make a character interesting, but their interactions w/ others interesting as well.

- "I’m a serial Marathoner, no two ways about it!" -

Are you me? Lol I do the same thing! I tried live watching and then commenting on the recaps but alas found myself quite impressionable and would change my opinion/impression of the drama based on the comments. Don't get me wrong, i love DB and the comments but sometimes the negatives I didn't notice before on my own suddenly seem so loud, esp when some nitpick. Suffice it to say I went back to my marathoning ways cos I prefer to make my own opinions about it and then read all the recaps after. I get the best of both worlds and enjoy the drama all over again ^^ The 2nd major reason is that I like the continuity of the emotions I feel when I watch them at once :)

I'm gonna be watching TWY and Voice when it ends. I watched the 1st ep of Chief Kim cos I loved Ahn Dan Tae just to check it out. It was quite enjoyable and even though the 2 characters seem similar on paper surprisingly NGM plays them both so well that I can differentiate the 2.

Will this year become the year of The Parks?

Last year was the year of KimPark
*Kim Rae Won - Park Shin Hye --Doctors
*Kim Yoo Jung - Park Bo Gum-- Moonlights.
Did I miss someone else?

If 2017's formula of high rating is The Parks, maybe next pairing will be Park Bo Gum-Park Shin Hye or maybe Park Bo Gum-Park Min Young.

I am going to see if another KimPark pairing this year (Kim Ji Won-Park Se Joon) will be sucessful too.

I like Strong Woman Do Bong Soon but sometimes the comedy is a little meh for me. I just enjoy Bong Soon and Min Hyuk's interactions and dynamic. Gook Du is mean, I could hardly careless about his character. This is one drama where I won't have second lead syndrome.

I love thrillers, mystery and crime dramas but I was expecting SWDBS to be purely rom-com so the thriller subplot threw me off a lot. The transition from light to dark is too drastic, it doesn't blend well as much as I thought it might.

Defendant on the other hand, seemed very dark but the bromance and the small comedic elements is pleasing and fits well. It's the most popular Korean drama airing right now yet I feel like its not talked about much in the English-speaking fandom?

Voice has lots of plotholes, BUT it's still so thrilling, the characters don't get much time for us to get emotionally attached to them because the drama is very plot-heavy, but there are small yet quality moments of character development. I'm loving our two badass leads Kwon-joo and Jin-hyuk, as well as the psychopathic murderer Mo Tae-gu. I'm anticipating their battle.
