One-night stand with smexy Sung Hoon in My Secret Romance

Whoa, did I hear this right: Thrill-adventure-crime specialist cable channel OCN has picked up a rom-com?!? Apparently OCN has decided to enter the rom-com game, and they’ve even opened up a new time slot on their schedule for it. Starting this April, OCN will begin broadcasting 100-percent pre-produced drama My Secret Romance on Monday-Tuesday, and some stills are already out for our viewing pleasure.

Starring Sung Hoon (Oh My Venus) and Secret idol group member Song Ji-eun (Sweet Home, Sweet Honey), My Secret Romance is the story of a man and a woman who have a one-night stand. They meet unexpectedly three years later when the woman comes to work as a new nutritionist at the company cafeteria where the man works. He’s the resident prickly second-generation chaebol.

Through the pre-released web novelization, the drama already has thousands of fans waiting for it to air. The setup of the plot is pretty typical: The handsome heir of the top corporation in Korea meets a cheerful woman and falls in love. But it’s being produced by the 1% of Anything PD, who managed to make that remake feel refreshing and lovely. So if it’s anything like that, I know I’ll immensely enjoy the romance between the two leads even if their background histories aren’t groundbreakingly new.

Like in all good romantic comedies, there’s a love triangle, and rookie actor Kim Jae-young (Master–God of Noodle) is there to fill the third leg. Song Ji-eun’s character used to have a crush on him way back in the past because of his warm friendly demeanor, but now they’re best buddies in a strictly platonic relationship. He’s a successful travel writer and the owner of a book-bar that’s right downstairs from Song Ji-eun’s apartment.

I’m a huge fan of Sung Hoon ever since his New Tales of Gisaeng days, although that drama was all over the place. I can’t say he’s a phenomenal actor yet, but he’s definitely been showing more and more promise through his recent works like Five Kids. But one thing I can say for sure is—the boy can kiss. So, I know I’ll be tuning in regardless of how OCN’s new venture in romantic comedy turns out.

My Secret Romance will begin airing on April 17, but if you have the Oksusu app, there’ll be an option of seeing the episodes a little earlier in the week.

Prickly chaebol = oh THAT cliche?

1% of anything PD= fine, I'll give it a chance and watch..

Lol that's my thought process. Sung Hoon is fun to watch most times. I don't mind cliched dramas if they're done well, which I'm hope the PD can manage.

Oh yes! He's such an eye candy. You should watch variety show, Cool Kiz on the Block. He's so hot in trunks lol Watched that because of SNSD Yuri but then I discovered Sunghoon! Also watched him on Five Kids and he's so funny. I was planning to watch Noble My Love, maybe I'll just skip it. I'll try watching Passionate Love.

I watched Passionate Love because once an actor makes my bias list, I usually go watch everything he's been in. Hmmmm. How do I not spoil...

It's good to see so much of him but the story itself will probably dissapoint. I'd recommend instead New Tales of the Gisaeng for something more satisfying. It gets a bit wacky towards the end but then recovers.

Same! Watched Cool Kiz on the Block for Yuri then BAM fell for Sunghoon too! I wad like "I've seen this guy somewhere but where?" Then I realized I watched him in Oh My Venus!

I couldn't finish Noble My Love, it just rubbed me the wrong places. But I have some hope for this one!

Ever since Cool Kiz I've been wanting someone to cast him as a swimmer in something (along with Yuri coz damn ya'll see that chemistry?!)

I'm with Beez. Do not watch Passionate Love. Stay far far away. I was suckered in by Sung Hoon, the title, and the plot synopsis that sounded like good fun makjang. Not worth it. Overwrought, and not in a good way, boring, and SPOILER he doesn't get the girl.

Then i saw him in Noble my love and i don't think he is lead material yet. He didn't feel natural. It looked like forced acting.

I think he can lead a romcom, provided his co-star has better acting chop than him. Other genre - better just do secondary role. As much as I am fangirling him, I notice his stiffness sometimes.

I've seen Song Ji-eun in "Sweet Home, Sweet Honey" and after more than a hundred episodes of that daily show I think I'm the resident expert both on her acting and in the thechinal process of making traditional Korean Wines.

The wines are fine, her performance was horrible.

I mean, she is not Jin Se Yun, (nobody comes close to her on my book), but is like the director told her specifically that she must not show any apreciation or liking for his boyfriend.
They eventually marry and she was still treating him like a passing acquaintance. No chemistry whatsoever.

Maybe she is like Suzy, (movie=fine, 20 episodes=bad), and preproducciton and a few episodes will work wonders.

I'll be checking this show, I have already a builted in endurance for her "frustrated pout", might as well utilize this super power.

They're a bit similar in a way that both have always played supporting character, also in family drama, and always quite a stand out because of their looks and super tall height.

I must be the only one that hated him in Oh My Venus, he's freakin stiff that he just sucks out of the fun in the scene he's in. I remember he is very very good lookin tho.

No, I thought he was pretty stiff in OMV as well, but that's also a drama I thought should have ended around episode 12.

I think his character in OMV was SUPPOSED to be stiff. That character had been abused and abandoned do was meant to be portrayed as wary and off putting.

I did not find him stiff at all in New Tales (for which he won a newcomer award for his FIRST EVER acting role). He was stiff in Noble only as far as the stuffy chaebol he was supposed to be. His one reaction shot to the heroine giving him a right cross was hilarious and sprouted up across the web as an awesome gif.

I can see some thinking him stiff in Faith bit again, it was not a loose character.

Quotes below found in links below this DB article:
Dramabeans' description of SungHoon's character in Faith: "The only thing that matters to this maknae brother are his siblings and his flute. Otherwise, he’s described as emotionless and poker-faced."

Sung Hoon's description of his character in Faith:
"He’s a person who’s more interested in animals than in people. That’s why he’s indifferent and stoic and doesn’t have much of a problem with killing people."

(replying to myself to prove I was right. lol)

Haha, I didn't hate him in OMV, but I definitely wasn't impressed by him. That's why I really stood up and took notice of him in Five Kids because I had such a hard time believing someone who bored me so much could be so entertaining. He really surprised me. I'm definitely interested to see whether he'll be able to impress me again in his first leading rom-com role.

Lee Tae Hwan already in my watch since King of High School Savvy coz that boy is super tall and well built. He is so young compared to his character that when I saw him in variety show then I saw his child-like cuteness...

As for Sunghoon, I have to admit i first recognized him when i watch Cool Kiz from the block due to his urmm sportmanship (and Lee Jae yoon in trunk)..

I hope Sung Hoon & Lee Tae Hwan can play brothers.. and Lee Tae Hwan can play a character of his own age...

I be confusing the both of them, and then have to stare at the picture that goes with their name, to then recognize, "Oh, it's not the same guy.." Then have to remember their past projects to think why I have seen them somewhere. I get so angry with myself.
I am so bad with names.. And faces..

yea, pretty much. many of us (including me) talk about how we want something fresh as far as love stories and rom-coms go, but then we still go and watch these dramas that give us more of the same plots. i guess we're just settling lol. as long as there's a market for it, they'll keep going at it. i'm pretty sure romance novels have the same generic CEO + simple woman pairing and it gets eaten up just as much.

The funny thing about this comment section is: everybody is talking about de male lead, but nobody said anything about the female actress LOL

She's a good singer and I thought she was cute on running man (kwang soo is her ideal type haha, their interaction was pure gold), but I've never seen her acting. Hope she's good. Her group members are actually talented in acting: Sunhwa has shown a lot of potential and now Hyoseong is pretty cute in Introverted Boss.

And I LOVED 100% of anything. Fighting!

Aw I was just about to comment on seeing her in running man! Her crush on kwang-soo was so adorable, I actually wanted them to go out together after the show <3

As far as the plot goes... it's cliche but I have a spot spot for all the classic drama tropes like prickly chaebol-meets-plucky-girl when it's executed well and hearing that the director of 1% of Anything (who took the contract-dating setup and and made it feel fresh and lovely) is at the helm gives me hope for the drama.

Having the leads have a one-night stand together before should make it even more interesting.

I have seen the actor in New Tales ("Andreee!"), Faith, Noble My Love, Oh My Venus and Five Children. I thought he did well in Faith though maybe because it was a relatively small role and then in Five Children he'd definitely improved. He's kinda meh in the other roles imo, but I'm rooting for him. Not familiar with the lead actress at all. I'm all for more dramas for me to choose from so I'm rooting for OCN and its new time slot.

"Song Ji-eun’s character used to have a crush on him way back in the past because of his warm friendly demeanor, but now they’re best buddies in a strictly platonic relationship. "

But if it's strictly platonic, how is it a love triangle? Does he have a crush on the male lead? Does the male lead THINK their friendship isn't platonic and get needlessly jealous? Does the best friend get platonically jealous because she doesn't spend as much time with him any more? Is it a more typical situation where one or both of them still harbors a secret crush and only pretends its platonic? (Probably the last one, but the others would be a lot more interesting, and the second and third could work together to comical degrees.)

I don't know anyone else in the show but I think Sung Hoon's selling point is that he's HILARIOUS. If he's in a rom-com, I know I'm in for a good time with someone who will really make me laugh. I enjoyed his romance with 5 kids so much and how he was so drawn to his love interest who thought he was a huge weirdo at first (he was). Lol, I really like that he can be this completely weird guy; it's awesome and really not something many are doing. He's great at it in a way that's not unlike Jang Hyuk or Ji Sung when they get the occasional eccentric character.

Hopefully it's a good show that will show that side to his acting more because I think it's his most interesting side.
