Oh, hey. Just dropping by to say hi! Happy weekend, everyone!
I'm only watching Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (our couple is so adorable) now but I'm so looking forward to Man To Man (Park Hae-jin's reactions to Park Sung-woong's shenanigans is hilarious).

i am curious to see what the comments on ep 11 of SWBS be.
MH tells her no matter how strong she is , in his eyes he has to protect her.
GD said the same last time, people were accusing the character to be male chauvisnistic and comparing it to MH..

I don't think what MH will tell her (it's in the preview for ep 12 and not in ep 11) is the same with what GD told her.
The subtitle for mine tells, "I know you're strong and special, but you're a girl I want to protect."
MH is just expressing his desire to be able to protect BS and there's nothing wrong with that. Unlike what GD said to BS, "No matter how strong you are, you will always be a weak/fragile girl to me."
That's totally different imo.
According to the subtitles in my vid anyway. ?

GD said the same thing..
that to him she is a woman he wants to protect..
audience twisted and turned the meaning to gain one point that can prove why MH is a better guy..
and i am pretty sure, this time they would go ga ga over him saying that .. "aww.. how cute. he cares for her".. as if gd was trying to look down upon her..
just another case of biased audience pretending to be unbiased..
on the contrary, this drama has done well with male characters.. each is wonderful and supportive of women in their lives.. extremely respectful including the gang leader

If you can't understand the difference in nuance of the two statements, that's on you and not on the rest of the audience who'll be "fawning over" MH statement BS.

OT, week 8! My sister had her first child this past week—cutest boy ever! But I’m more excited that she is (finally) watching Goblin! Her birthday was also this week, so I told her that was my gift to her. I had mentioned that she should watch it months ago, but being the disciplined pharmacist that she is, she opted to wait until her 12-week maternity leave before starting it! And although I may look mildly insane on these posts, I’m really a very responsible eonni as well, and applaud her for doing so. And, if that wasn’t enough, my mom came into town and watched the 5th episode of Goblin after admitting that it took her ten minutes to text a three-word text to me which I never answered, which then annoyed her. I HAD to show her grim reaper’s trials with his cell phone as well. “Sun-Ny, not Sun-Hee.” She laughed, although not as much as I would have imagined—probably because she was still annoyed with me. LOL.
My husband and I started Saimdang Light’s Diary this week—which, actually, he started—I have others on my list that I would have rather seen, but, you know, supportive wife and all… We watched the first episode and a little of the second. Someone, please tell me the historical portion will start soon. I’m not invested at all in the current timeline. I hate how misogynistic the current story is. You have this very intelligent and capable woman with two men in her life that treat her like a slave (the professor and her husband), and she caters hand and foot to them? It is the 21st century after all. Possibly, it is cultural, but I’m from a very Asian paternalistic background too, as well as my husband, and we both found it very off-putting. But, on the flip-side, Yang Se Jong! He’s so adorable. I hope to see more of him in this.
We also tried One More Time (The Day After We Broke Up) which was just put on Netflix this month, and couldn’t get past the first 30-minute episode. It has the same actress I liked in My Love, Eun Dong, Yoon So Hee… Oh well…not likely to waste any more time on this one.
Tonight, two things are going on! I’m watching Train to Busan with my neighbor’s 21- year- old son, since my husband won’t watch it with me, and I’m more likely to get through it if I watch it with someone—Yes, I’m a wuss. (Turns out he’s a KPOP fan and is learning Mandarin, who knew???) And, going to the University to see (for the millionth time) the first episode of Goblin with the Korean association (first time) whilst learning Korean! Yay me!
So, another conversation for all of you!
We were at an academic awards ceremony (lots of Asian and Indian kids there, lol) and I noticed how much my son has grown in the past year…
Me: *Whispering during the ceremony* Oh my goodness, honey, your son is a whole head taller than that Korean boy who is his same age. I didn’t realize he was that tall.

Husband: *Whispering in an even lower tone* Maybe it’s because he’s around these beef and corn-fed Americans all the time, it’s hard to gauge how tall he is.
Me: *Still whispering* Or, the fact that his dad is a freakishly tall Asian and everyone is short next to you.
Husband: *Barely above a decibel whisper* Really, he could totally be “your acto---“
Me: *Cutting him off-- struggling to whisper* SSHHH!!! Your son (not “my actor”) is about to get an award!
Moral of the story: Yes, I’ve taken possession of Gong Yoo, and don’t even refer to him in conversation by his name anymore. It’s understood in my family who we’re speaking of.
Second moral: Now that I think about it, the last thing I told my husband could also be interchangeable with said actor…GAH.
Third moral: My son is seriously not a bad looking kid, but, thankfully, has no idea… AAIISH.

+1 for Train of Busan for all the things Mango mentioned.
Actually I was watching while my roommates were watching Walking Dead season 6 (is that the newest one?), and when I came out of my room after the movie, and saw all the zombies on Walking Dead, I blurted out something like "they're moving so slow, these guys had it so easy...". They gave me stink eyes for saying that, but it was true.

Watching Train to Busan, I asked myself : Why are they so fast ? Does the "palli-palli" culture in Korea apply to zombies too ?" lol

I think season 7 is the latest season.
Maybe I am remembering differently (it's been awhile) but the first few seasons they did move quicker. The 6th season is a few years into the zombie apocalypse and most of the zombies have been decaying for a few years at this point so maybe that's why they move slower? Just a thought!
Speaking of TWD and Kdramas. I had just started season 4 of TWD. But decided to take a break to watch Let's Eat. I start up an episode and within 1 minute of the show starting Lee Soo-Kyung is watching the EXACT episode I am on. I thought it was an awesome coincidence.

@Mango LOL at the "palli palli culture". I got a good laugh from that.

Re: SAIMDANG
I've been watching it from the beginning, and it does get better. Evil Professor pissed me off, too. Last week's plot developments zig-zagged into some more nice twists.
The cinematography is lovely in the Joseon timeline, and the Cliff of Non-Doom puts in another fine appearance. The artworks themselves are gorgeous. My favorite is the "Water Moon Avalokiteshvara."
Yang Se Jong's character is a far cry from Dr. Do In-bum (ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM), and he's doing great. Song Seung-Heon looks mighty fine in hanbok, and is holding his own, IMHO. I was surprised to recognize Yun Da-Hun as Saimdang's hubby in the Joseon timeline. He was a hoot in HYENA, the only other show I've seen him in so far.

I just watched both of this week's episodes with subtitles. Both of Saimdang's timelines devolved into downtrodden, long-suffering doormat territory. Gag me with a palette knife.
And what the heck is it with her harridan of a mother-in-law in the present day? Her poor son gets diagnosed as traumatized, and grandma starts beating him up. Dang! Horrid old bat!
It was nice, however, to see so many of Saimdang's paintings -- and one by Lee Gyeom, too. Truly gorgeous.

Re: One More Time (Netflix)
The first episode was pretty bad, however, I stuck through it just to see where the storyline was going. The second episode is much better. I actually think having each episode cut in half helps the show since L is not the greatest actor in the whole world. Which is funny cuz I never noticed it before in Shut Up Flower Boy Band.
I have one episode left so I can't say whether it ends on a good note, but I must say, it has a nice unexpected twist that makes it different from Groundhog Day. It's an easy way to spend a few hours- the whole thing is only 4hrs long.
PS. Train to Busan is fantastic. And I don't even like scary movies!

I watched the first 3 episodes of One More Time and it's ok. L as a lead does show his weakness as an actor. I have been fine with him as a side or secondary characters but he is lacking when it comes to carrying a drama.
The drama does pick up after episode 3 (when things take a bit of a twist). I plan to finish it as it is light and fluffy.
Train to Busan on the other hand was excellent. It's not just a zombie movie, it's more about the characters, which I love. And Gong Yoo is of course amazing in it. Me and my brother were both impressed with it. We then later watched it again with my Mom.

My Mom is thirsty for pretty much anything kdrama related. She is actually retiring today and me and my brother kid she wont have any kdramas left to watch after 1 week because she devours them so quickly. I am constantly amazed she watches as much as she does, like 3 whole series a week while working 12 hour shifts. I don't know how she does it.
I am the same way with books. If it doesn't pull me in pretty quickly I usually just move on. With kdramas I tend to give them atleast 4 episodes to pull me in or I will move on. I am more forgiving on the web ones or short series ones since they are so short. My favorite drama is Gaksital and that took until episode 10 to finally pull me in (but boy did it!). Only reason I stuck with it is because I was watching it together with my sister and she loved it since the beginning. I am glad I stuck with it though!
DOTS was ok. Loved Song Joong-ki and really liked all the other characters but the plot felt weak to me. My Mom loved it though.

I'm currently watching Sister Slam Dunk Season 2 and while it feels different from the first season I still like it. I feel like we know them more as individuals than as a (girl)group. I cried a bit when they talked about their struggles in their individual career on ep 6. And I like the new song better !
I'm watching Father is Weird on KBS World so I'm always 2 eps behind.
I like the brother and the uncle relationship : they look like friends talking about their struggles. I hope the big bro will soon discover his girlfriend's personality. She likes to humiliate that poor girl like in high school and I don't understand why. To make her feel superior ? I want the brother to quickly break up with her and see how awful she actually is. I want him to tell his parents that he doesn't want to study and perhaps he will start cooking. I think I started to develop a crush for this actor since Drinking Solo, heh.
Jung So Mi's character feels so real to me that it hurts. I can connect with her and hope she will find the courage to stand up for herself after what happened in the bathroom, you go girl !
I like the focus on Lee Joon in ep 6 & 7. He is lonely and behind his facade he is just a lost little boy. I was tensed when he went to the restaurant for the first time and at the end of ep 7, WOW. It made me so emotional when Lee Joon wondered which part of him looked like his father. I have not been this invested in a family drama for a while.
I have only seen the actor playing the father acting as a bad father. It's fresh to see him being a good one (and presumingly a weird one). And the parents are relationship goals !
There is a clear contrast between the two families : Lee Yu Ri has siblings and parents who care for each other. There are arguments and sometimes they are annoyed by each other but their love is what makes their bond that strong.
Whereas Lee Yu Ri's lover's (?) family consists of a father who takes more care of his dog than his wife. The mother feels lonely and meddles too much with her son's life. If she and her husband were close, there wouldn't be as much problem. They remind me a little of my parents minus the obsession of the father for his dog.
Why do I have that many crushes in this drama ?
Seoyeong, My Daughter : The girl who likes Park Hae Jin after being away for 3 years is crazy. I never understood how you could keep loving someone you barely know. For now, I like the girlfriend better and her little brother too. Seo Young's mother-in-law is so pitiful to me that I can't really hate her. She is in a loveless marriage while witnessing her son affectionate gesture for his wife.
Whisper : There is too many coincidences but it's interesting.
Super Family 2017 : Really liking it so far. The menstruation song made me ROFL. It was good to see the topic of sexual harassment too.
I was craving for romantic movies so I watched Café Waiting Love with Vivian Sung (loved her in Our Times). It...

It was a bit too over the top at times for me but the story was great. I just couldn't take the guy wearing a bikini as a serious male lead in the beginning, ha. He was cute though.
I also watched Suddenly Seventeen/17 again because of a youtube recommendation. Oh man, I loved it ! I thought it would be about a 28 year old woman trying to save her couple but it is more about finding herself. I was pleased to see Wallace Huo and Darren Wang in the same movie (both really handsome and cute actors) but it was my first time seeing Ni Ni and she was wonderful. I liked two things : the relationship with her 17 year old self and her BFF because those two cracked me up so much.
Some parts didn't make much sense or could have been better but I was pleased with the movie, specially the ending unlike what I have read in the youtube comment section.
I expected a cute high school romance movie with Yesterday Once Again and I had a movie about pursuing your dream and a great friendship. I have some similarities with the female lead (good grades, great expectations about my future) and her concern hit me hard. However, my parents support my studies and my career plans. This movie made me thankful for my parents' support. I also liked the relationship with the guy, it reminded a bit of Our Times (yeah, I'm a big fan of that movie). It was also good to hear Hey Jude by The Beatles, love this song.
What is your most favorite romantic scene in drama (korean, japanese, taiwanese...) ? It doesn't have to be a grandiose proposal, it can be a sweet and touching gesture.
Mine is in Personal Taste (my first kdrama) when Son Ye Jin has her periods during a party and has to stay in the toilet. Lee Min Ho runs to buy pads for her and then takes care of her. I know it is not a dreamy fantasy-like scene but if a man did it for me, I would fall head over heels for him. A true hero.
This week I felt like listening to bands and especially FT Island because they're coming back with a japanese album. After listening to Where's the truth and I Will for the 2648951098 times, I'm curious about their 10th anniversary album.
Speaking of japanese songs, I listened to Niche Syndrome, an old album of One Ok Rock. It reminded of when I first discovered them in high school. I was blown away.

Most favorite romantic scene?
Hmm...
Mine is Daniel Choi and Hwang Jung-eum's car dates in High Kick 2. It was so mundane, but hit all the romantic spot for me. Usually the camera would zoom out so we couldn't hear what they are talking about, but it's clear how happy and giddy they are around each other. And that always makes me grinning like a fool.

I love Our Times so much! I'm on a K-drama slump right now so I've only been watching Chinese movies and dramas for the past few weeks.
Haven't watched Suddenly Seventeen but I really want to because I love Wallace Huo, Ni Ni and Darren Wang but there are so many mixed reviews. Same with Yesterday Once More, though the only reason why I haven't watched it is because I don't want to cry yet lol
The most recent C-movie I've watched is Yang Mi and Li Yifeng's Fall in Love Like a Star. It's a cute movie if someone's looking for something light!
The only movie I'm waiting for right now is the movie adaptation of Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossom (no seriously, the title is so pretty. I can't use Eternal Love or Once Upon a Time over that). Liu Yifei and Yang Yang are such beauties but I've never really been a fan of the latter's acting even though I love him in variety shows. So far, the movie posters are no much for the drama's. The drama is just ethereally beautiful and I like the cast better here.

I don't like how stalkers behavior are romanticized in kramas because what kind of message is that ? You have the right to follow and actually end up with the one you love just because you liked longer than his current girlfriend ? No matter how cute the character appears, it is wrong.

Agreed! So many kdramas just pull the stalker card out and its insanely creepy! No one in real life can get away with those tactics if you really think about it.
But sometimes I wonder....if kdramas romanticize stalkers so much, will it eventually lead to a cultural revolution causing all of us to accept stalkers as a NORMAL occurrence? I feel like kdramas have already brainwashed me enough...will I lose all my sanity soon?!

I am worried about the same exact thing!! I want him to stay safe and healthy but Koreans get very mean when it comes to military duties.. I really hope this doesn't affect his career in any way... I hope he takes a little rest and gets well, and if possible go back.. he must be so upset!! As fans. I am sure we all will stand by him whatever happens!

Seo Inguk does want to enlist again, and that somehow put me at ease. Dont get me wrong, I loved him so but the thought of Koreans critise and demeaning him in case because of this military service issue are too much for me to handle. I believe he will take a good care of himself, and the fact that he still went to the camp even though he's injured showed how much concerns he put over his military duty. Yeah, we will support him always, because bae will definitely do his very best, like always. ???

Seo Inguk does plan to reenter the military again, once he does his medical check up and you are right, that is my main concern now that people might bash him due to his military issues. But I bet people cant bash him on that, because he clearly shown from the beginning that he is determined to enlist in the military, but who knows rite? Sigh.

I am sure that Seo Inguk also want to perform his duty diligently. I just hoped that Knets doesnt go around bashing someone who is hurt and currently taking care of himself in order to go to the military again. I understand their sentiment towards their nation, but what I am hoping is for them not to be judgemental, and go online posting or accusing Seo Inguk try to dodge his military duty. Hwaiting Seo Inguk!

I'm only about two months old on Dramabeans and I've had this handlename since I first commented. I'm an environmental lawyer, and for whatever it's worth, I quite like my job (on most days anyway). Law and litigation is fun (if demanding) and I'm working on preserving forests and wildlife, with local communities on access to forest and marine resources, and so on. It's a good feeling.

I feel like talking more about FB! Before it, I did not watch anime shows. I was calendar shopping one fateful January and came across a calendar with interesting artwork on the shelf...I turned the it over and read one of the most bizarre synopsizes in my experience:
The Sohma family has been cursed for generations. When a member of the clan is embraced by a person of the opposite sex, they transform into an animal from the Chinese Zodiac! After keeping their secret hidden for years, their unusual household is turned upside down when young Tohru, who is living in a tent on their property, stumbles into their life. She must promise to keep their secret as one of her own—or face the consequences!
So weird! But I bought the calendar and eventually got very excited to see the show. This opened Pandora's Box for me! Now I watch and read Japanese, Taiwanese, and Korean media all the live-long day!

silentbeluga
March 31, 2017 at 9:05 PM
Mine's actually quite complicated.
I was always told as a child to "not talked when the adults were speaking" and in my family, that extended to not answer when the adults were attacking me in one way or another, not defend myself when I was being accused of something and basically not impose myself on others in any way. I was really quite young at the time (maybe 3 or 4) and though that's a part of education that is very present in my culture, I internalised it really deeply. I started lowering the volume of my voice, didn't speak unless it was absolutely necessary and generally turned to activities that didn't require for me to use my voice (ballet, reading, playing the piano etc.) It got so bad that at one point during my teens, I would talk and my voice wouldn't be able to reach out to the person sitting across the table from me. So that's the silent part (it got better with the years! I can talk now :) )
The beluga comes from a story I read once. It was in a French comic book, "Yakari", I think, though I'm not sure, I might be confusing it with something else and it was the story of this little boy who finds a lost beluga in a river. Turns out, the beluga is a nice, supportive friend who spends all of his time in the water but even though it doesn't make a sound, it's always there, listening and helping out in its own way. I really liked that character. Plus, I grew up near the water so it sort of made sense to me.

💜🍍☠️ Sicarius The Queen of Melonia ☠️🍍💜
March 31, 2017 at 10:08 PM
Sicarius:
Means 'assassin, hit man'; literally 'dagger man' in Latin, as 'sicae' is a kind of dagger.
It's the title of one of my main writing projects (take a wild guess as to the subject matter), and is the tag I've used on a FB page I admin for, for over two and half years now (fb page is link in the handle), so much so that it's basically become a nick name. Hence why I use it on other things, like dbs!!
Funnily enough it is also a) a genus of African spider, b) an Ultramarine captain in Dawn of War and c) a character in the Emperor's Edge novel series by Lindsey Buroker. And 'Sic', what I sometimes shorten it to, means 'thus' in Latin. But those are just bonuses.
I used other random ones a couple of times when I was kinda more uncertain and nervous about commenting. I shortened it to Sic for like a couple of posts, but then there was, surprisingly, another Sic. So now I just stick with this.

It's so interesting reading everyone's different back stories. Mine was something I took up during my obsession with animes and jdramas! For the life of me I can't recall where I even learnt it from tho. I only remember that it reminded me of flowers and spring (it means May/blossom in Japanese). And i added my birth year behind it.

OH OH!! i forgot to add- if you want Korean drama photoessay books, they sell them in Taipei!! And it's translated to traditional chinese!!!
I stumbled upon them in a bookstore JUST before i needed to leave for the airport!
I bought the Gobin and W photoessays!!! They also had Moonlight but I already have that so I didn't bother. But omo its so awesome because my chinese is better than my Korean so i can figure out the books and quotes much easier!
I regret that I didn't have more time because I literally had 2 minutes because I was already late and I didn't want to be late to the airport. There were 2 shelves of books!! I didn't have time to look through them all!! :(
The bookstore is this one

Still watching and enjoying SAIMDANG and REBEL, which keeps triggering happy memories of THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. I'm impressed with Yang Se-Jong's performances in SAIMDANG. His character is way more animated than Do In-bum. What a revelation. He's downright cute. (Not a descriptor that ever came to mind when he was in the OR at Doldam Hospital!)
Am thrilled to learn that Shin Dong-wook (SOUL MATE!!! Yay!!!!) is returning to acting in LOOKOUT, which I think is scheduled to follow REBEL.
As for VOICE, it got really dark towards the end. Kim Roe-ha was excellent, and it was a blast seeing Kim Jae-wook.

I enjoyed reading your Taiwan post. Your little boy is adorbs! Photos are really beautiful.
I visited 5 years ago and enjoyed it. I, too, didn't spend much time in Taipei. My first stop was in Hualien where we took a trip to Taroko Gorge, it's beautiful. I mentioned previously on OT that I watched the movie Seediq Bale on the flight to Taipei so the timing was really good. When I was walking in the Taroko National Park, I was imagining what it was like for the aboriginals living in the mountains.
The road up Hehuanshan is windy but it was scenic and the air fresh. We actually had to get our jackets out because it was 0 degress celsius at the summit in late Nov/early Dec.
By the way, you don't have to worry about the 5kg, you can afford it!
