SNSD’s Seohyun lands lead role in weekend drama Thief-nom, Thief-nim

SNSD’s Seohyun (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) has confirmed her next acting role as the lead in MBC’s 50-episode weekender Thief-nom, Thief-nim (the nom in the title is a pejorative suffix, while nim is honorific). According to the synopsis, it’s about a collective of thieves that are a thorn in the side of the hidden few that manipulate all of Korea’s politics and economy.

Seohyun’s character in Thief-nom, Thief-nim is a passionate police investigator who lives for justice. She is a warm, considerate and righteous individual who always stands up for the weak. With this description, I’m not sure whether to expect a caper-type drama with lots of funny scenes of our thieves evading the corrupt authorities or a more serious tone. (A shorter length seems more suitable for mischievous escapades, but with fifty episodes, this may be going for a different style.) Perhaps it’ll be a cross between Police Unit 38 and Pride and Prejudice, which were both well-acted dramas about taking down the system, albeit in very different ways.

Seohyun began her acting career through a small role in SBS’s 2013 drama Passionate Love, and has added to her resumé with musicals like Mama Mia and Gone With the Wind. She starred in the web drama Ruby Ruby Love and had a loveline with Nam Joo-hyuk in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. I still can’t really tell how good of an actress she is, but the production team seems to have faith; they picked her based on the fact that she possessed the cheerful, energetic charisma that they wanted for their drama.

Sohn Young-mok and Cha Yi-young, who comprised the writing team behind May Queen, Golden Rainbow, and Glamorous Temptation, will be writing the script for this project, and PD Oh Kyung-hoon (Rosy Lovers, The King 2 Hearts), who is also known for his melo works Phoenix and Love Letter, will be directing.

MBC drama Thief-nom, Thief-nom will air in May, following Father, I’ll Take Care of You.

Pretty sure they will comeback. Soshi already talked about it several times. I guess Seohyun has some work loaded months before her.

She hasn't done anything substantial acting wise (onscreen) till date. She messed up in Moon lovers but there were quite a few of those in the drama so can't say. However, a 50 episode main lead role seems a bit early for her? Well, perks of being a popular idol under the big 3. Maybe she'll surprise us but right now can't help but feel bad for those talented actresses out there looking for an opportunity.

It's not like the drama will be better without her. You can see who's the screenwriter, he's one of the worst 3rd tier screenwriter. Golden Rainbow was like a remake of May Queen, his work from a year earlier. MBC weekend dramas always bad makjangs with very good receptions, but it last this year.

I'm telling you! When I saw the credits, I lost all energy to get worked up, or suggest casting.

Plus its a weekend drama, there's not just one lead...I think. Good luck

I've been her fan since 2010 and as much as I love her, her acting is not that great. She was awkward and stiff in Moon Lovers as well as her brief cameo in Weightlifting Fairy. I do think she is definitely better with a young adult role rather than a serious role because her recent web drama was not that bad. I just hope the casting people know what they're doing and Seohyun shows some serious improvement!

+1000. She was really really bad in Scarlet heart.Wonder what they saw to cast her in a 50 episode series when just last year she couldn't emote at all as a side character. Sorry about all the oda talented actresses. I'll pass.

I used to really like seohyun after watching her wgm stint years ago. Then her solo album was out and watched more of her videos to find that I like her less the more I watch her. She is a bit.. umm, sorry for sounding harsh, think highly about herself. This casting news came along and I am quite done with her.

She should keep taking side roles to improve instead of like this. With RV Joy casting I could understand why she pursued it since SM must've decided it for her and she must obey. But a senior idol like Seohyun? She must have the right to choose her projects yet she took this lead role without an ounce of humility.
Rant over.

She is pretty but she is awkward in both real life and acting. lol. I don't know what PD saw in her to give her lead role. She was not convincing in Scarlet Heart, and not convincing enough in Ruby Ruby Love (her webdrama). But I know long drama has many characters, and there must be some other actors that better than her and can cover her weakness.

Ahh.. finally somebody spoke my mind.

I was SO reluctant to make any comments regarding Seohyun. I think she's cute but unnatural.. so unnatural. While I was watching WGM, I actually felt pity for Yong Hwa. Forgive me all Seohyun's fans but I couldn't really feel any of her sincerity in that show. I mean, you can't be natural in any show of course but I really did feel that she was a bit strange. I didn't like her much, but I did understand pretty well why boys would fall for her. This may sound harsh but she seems like a perfect girlfriend-type material. Just a bit too PERFECT to be true.

It doesn't surprise me that she got a big role. I think people seems to believe in her ability to become famous. It just seems like she is always trying to be good at everything I don't know who she is. I think they might think that Seohyun will become the next UEE, being super successful from taking the lead role in a family drama (Ojakgyo Brothers) and then they can have many further plans for her future career as an actress (also as many other things).

Her resume is still very small, I also can't tell if she's cut out for acting. I love singer Seohyun more and I was surprised when I first heard she had a passion for acting considering how cute yet awkward she's been from earlier debut till around 2014.

But its not like I'm paying to watch this drama, and if the casting directors think she's got what it takes then I'm gonna have hope that this will be her breakout role, like how Yoona's daily drama back in 2008 was for her.

I do worry since it has 50 eps and starts in May, its definitely gonna overlap with SNSD's comeback in July. I wasn't worried before with The King Loves since its preproduced.

Seohyun I hope your confident in your skills and that it shows. I have no doubt she will put 200% into this project and I hope it will pay off.

She's so stiff. Yes
But she has big agency that has very big influence in korean industry. So she definitely can do whatever she wants *read : ACTING*
What a pity to those actresses who don't have big agencies, though more talented than most idols nowdays
*Definitely skip this drama*

Well, saying that she's "lead" may mean she's not really the lead of the leads. But definitely, she'll have an own plot since it's a 50 Ep weekend drama.
I'm still doubting that she'll be the lead of the leads because SM doesn't allow that in a girl group. I mean Yoona gets the legit female lead role and has the girl next door image that the masses like while Sooyoung's not gab type to be fangirled/fanboyed about, but she's the one who gets the excellence acting awards. Yuri on the other hand gets "lead female roles" but is overshadowed by the male leads in her dramas, expect for short drama Goho, where she's the legit lead.
So I wonder if Seohyun will be the top billed for this role.
Or SM is positioning her for weekend family dramas?
I actually thought SM would just let her stick with musicals... but no.

Among the nine girls in SNSD, Sooyoung definitely the one who has decent acting among idols and among her group obviously. I watched her in Spring Days and 38 Task Force, she definitely can act and her acting was way better than the overrated Yoona and this girl on the above article. What makes SM thinks to push this girl become the lead of a 50 long episode drama? Sooyoung definitely has more calibre, and pity to those actress out there who has what it takes to lead this drama. I though South Korean has gotten over this idol-wooden-actor thingy, but it seems they still dependale on the idols star status to gain their viewers. Pfttt!

My thoughts exactly. I can accept if she takes supporting roles, but lead role? I wonder what the casting director was thinking when they casted her.

Exactly! Supporting roles will suit her better, rather than a leading roles. Come on casting director, cheerful and energetic charisma? You see, being cheerful and energetic doesnt mean that you can channel those charisma on the screen. If she was meant to act, and she sincerely so, she will start building up her career by choosing minor roles first, until she is capable enough to handle the show on her own. Trust me.

Required fields are marked *

Well I think it would be foolish on SM's part not to make her accept the role if it was given to her. Blame the casting director for offering her the role, and not the management and Seohyun for taking the opportunity given.

But seohyun has the final decision to accept it or not. If she knows to herself that she's still lacking to play a lead role and knows that there are lots of other actressess that can easily suit and act that role, then she should have just decline. Of course, she definitely knows that she will be bashed when the drama airs and she have not met the people's expectation

No, just no. This brings back bad memories of the Chucky Dancing Doll with a knife. The creepiest things were the shiny eyes and the plastered smile which never faded. Now, she going to smile more and go around with a gun?

I thought she did better in WFKBJ. Melo suit her better and cameo too.

I don't follow kpop so only know her from Moon Lovers. Maybe she can sing but she sure can't act. Thank goodness it's a 50 ep drama which I wouldn't watch anyway. But honestly, this girl was so awkward in ML that I fast forwarded her bit in Weightlifting because I cringed as soon as I saw her on screen. I can't say that about any other actor or actress I've seen in kdramas. Some aren't so good, but I don't actually cringe when I see them on screen.

Hmm, she was so awkward and stiff in Moon Lovers. Even her small cameo in Weightlifting Fairy, a modern day drama, was awkward. I don't know how she will survive a 50 episode drama....or rather, how the audience will.
