More runners for SBS’s Running Man

Yang Se-chan, Jeon So-min

SBS has announced that comedian Yang Se-chan (Comedy Big League, Doctor House) and actress Jeon So-min (1% of Anything) have been added to the lineup for its flagship Sunday variety program Running Man. They will be joining the original cast members Yoo Jae-suk, Haha, Kim Jong-kook, Ji Suk-jin, Lee Kwang-soo, and Song Ji-hyo as they transition into a new format this spring.

The two new maknaes joined the cast for their first shoot today (April 3), and sources reported that the chemistry between the new additions and the original members was great. I’m actually quite excited to see the two newbies on the show: Yang Se-chan’s older brother Yang Se-hyung recently joined Yoo Jae-suk’s Infinity Challenge over on MBC to great effect, and Jeon So-min’s recent guest appearance on Running Man showed pretty great variety potential (in the space of five minutes, she betrayed her partner Kwang-soo, revealed that she had stolen money from him before leaving, and then ended up losing anyway because she has no luck AT ALL, lol).

I have to say that as a fan since the first episode back in 2010 (Has it really been that long? Man, I feel old…), I’ve felt that some of the Running Man magic that hooked me all those years ago has been missing recently, what with Gary’s departure and all the off-camera drama with members being fired, the program being canceled, and then revived (seriously, I’m still feeling the emotional whiplash).

To be perfectly honest, I expected the worst when I first saw the headlines announcing a cast change, but it was welcoming to hear that the cast was being expanded AND that the producers first consulted with the original cast members about the change (they’re learning! Miracles do happen). I’m hoping against hope that these new additions and the format change will inject some much needed new energy into the program. Also, does this mean they might bring back the tag ripping? Please let this mean they’ll bring back the tag ripping. What is the point of the name tags if they aren’t being ripped off?!

I agree. I think JSM is pretty good at variety. At least, she's been very entertaining every time I see her on RM. Hopefully die-hard RM fans can be more receptive to this cast change.

"die-hard RM fans" actually accept that, but most of their South East Asian fans wont accept. They're actually just millions of underage fans.

I like this. RM needs new members to bring some change in interaction and environment. It is arguable about the person, and I won't say anything at the moment.

However, it is kind of disappointing to see some RM fans' feedback to this change. They even comment on Se Chan's instagram like "get out" and "you are not welcomed"

try search using hangeul, it's easy to learn. for example, if you googling "전소민 인스타그램" (Jeon So-min instagram), it will come at the top.

anyway, her IG ID is "jsomin86"

Netizens reactions are quite harsh. It's like so many people complain, but do they actually watch the show to add to the ratings? Because all these changes to RM are only due to low rating, nothing else.

I quite like JSM's last appearance on RM and it saddens me when she said to the casting directors to please cast me - and I was hoping she would be signed on to new dramas soon because she's talented - but if her next project is RM, I'm all for it! And yes I have been watching RM loyally from the start and I do think it needs a change (mainly the PD tbh, I hate his fondsness of long slo-mos).

Yes. The huge fan of Running Man, but not so much keep watching every ep each week of Running Man, but they always complain about things and things, but don't want change anything.

Yeah, felt really bad for JSM since she's talented (and pretty).

But at least the RM PDs had the good idea to hire her and appearing on RM should increase JSM's profile and popularity and hence, increase her acting job offers as it did for Ji-hyo and Kwang-soo.

She's not only been great appearing on RM, but she's also been an absolute hoot whenever she appeared on Happy Together.

I'm less sure about Yang Se-chan, but adding a comedian is better than adding an idol (even one of the really athletic idols) as most idols tend not to be good with the witty quips and comebacks (aside from a few like Daesung and Seungri).

Ha - JSM was in my fave K-drama, "Joseon X-Files."

Now, I'm going to have to go back and look for her parts (had no idea who she was at the time).

They really gave So-min a job! Haha. She and Kwang-soo are really cute in the episode that they were paired. Can't remember if I have ever watched Se-chan but I do hope that the addition will bring in more fun.

Maybe by adding more cast members, they are trying to do what "1 Night, 2 Days" is doing, which is to have more episodes focused on the games/activities with the solid cast line-up that they have and invite less guests XD Either way, I'm just glad and happy that they're learning ~!!!

Yeah, they sure are learning, esp when they asked the member's opinion..however, are they really changing air time? I really hope so, because I love 2D1N so muc, I'd rather they are not be taken over in ratings by the revamped RM...
I'm sorry for being selfish..

I thought that the show was going to cancel (that was the last news I heard a few months back). Has that cancellation plan been scratched then, if I understand it correctly?

Running Man was uncancelled on January. SBS fired the guy who fired KJK and SJH. Then the members were ok to return to the show and start again.

Really? They fired that guy? Wasn't keeping track very closely, but that's definitely new to me..

Back then during those saga, I sure hope they aren't doing all those previously for the sake of "rating" and doing last minute revival of the show, before deciding to cut it for good..

Let's hope the change in time-slot and more cast member with a New staff in charge can do things better and we viewers don't need to go through the agony of your publicity stunt (regardless intended or not)

Oh I loved her in Happy Together! You should watch her in Knowing Brother too, her improv skills during the drama segment had me in stitches.

In fact, I think she's been great in all the variety shows I've seen her in, and I loved her even more after 1% of Anything, so overall I think I'm pretty happy with her joining Running Man despite a slight tinge of sadness that 7012 is no more.. But hey, anything to keep my weekly dose of Running Man!

Guys, this is just strategy by SBS to replace Jong Kook and Ji Hyo. Agreed by both parties i presumed to safe each other faces. SBS have had great backlashes from fans last year regarding those two being fired from RM. They need new strategy so they won't anger both fans and RM fans as well.

So they just introduce new cast members to RM a month or two early so public will love new members and later KJK and SJH will just say they quit for other projects so on.

I am not surprise one day they will use this tactic again to replace other members. All the best for every RM casts. We love you always no matter whether you in RM or not. As for me, Good bye RM.

Noooooooooooo I really hope this isn't true :(

I mean, it's not that I don't believe SBS isn't capable of pulling a stunt like this, but it would be supremely unfair to KJK and SJH, especially KJK who was the one helped talk the rest of the cast into continuing the show.

Plus, I'm already excited about SJH and JSM's potential 'womance' and takeover against all the guys!

Though I like SBS dramas, there have been times I felt like SBS is quite a cruel company. With all the strange things which happened after the winner for lead actress of My Saddy Girl was chosen, the changings of the potential female lead in Suspense Partners and the issues with the RM team, I'm not sure what to believe or disbelieve about this channel anymore. I still like SBS dramas and varieties, I just somehow feel bad for people involved in these swapping incidences.

I miss reading the RM recaps too!

I've been a fan of RM for so long that honestly I like to watch the show even if it's not funny, just because I like to watch the interactions between the members. I'm a bit iffy about new members (I'm the type of person who doesn't like change when I think something has been doing ok) because these original members hold a very dear place in my heart... but I'll still check out the new episodes! I like the show too much to not give it a chance.

I liked Joen So Min but the fans were vicious. Half of the people who say shit about casting and complain don't even watch the show. Ratings are down, that's the reason they are shaking things up. People were reacting as if she is solely responsible for all the crap that happened off screen. I like Ji Hyo too but in a show with so many male members what's the matter if they add another charming gal, at any rate they shouldn't have attacked her like that on Instagram.

I believe that they actually watch. But then again, they (and me too) watch it on illegal sites. So they (we) don't give any benefit to runningman and/or SBS. "I will not watch it anymore" doen't have any meaning since their hit doesn't count anyway.

Considering chemistry with Lee Kwangsoo, I'm sad Wang Jihye not chosen. I have nothing against Jeon Somin, though. She has great character too. And I also think RM need a new frontline.

I love RM, and I will admit when I first saw the news of the cast additions I was hesitant. I love the cast as is, and while I agree that there has been a huge hole since Gary left, and the program has been lackluster, I did feel like they were settling into a groove without Gary.

I'm curious how the cast dynamics will change now with the addition of these two new cast members. I thought Jeon So-min was absolutely kooky and hilarious in last week's episode, and a love line with Kwang-Soo could have the potential to inspire Monday Couple-level fervor with the audience, or could lead to hilarious conflicts.

So while I liked her guest spot, I am more ambivalent with Yang Se-Chan's addition. I thought he tried too hard with his guest spot on the show and part of the charm of Running Man is how effortless the members make their actions funny. I felt he relied too heavily on gags and at times tried to overtake Ji Suk-Jin's and Lee Kwang-Soo's moments of hilarity.

I hope the casting works out and Running Man can continue to run for years to come.

Yeah I feel the same way about Yang Se-chan's casting. The members hold a special place in my heart so I was always going to be wary of any changes, (though I think they did handle Gary leaving extremely well) but I'm more open to JSM joining than adding YSC to an already-packed majority male cast.

I am not sure if this would work but Jeon So Min sure was hilarious! I love Ji Hyo being the centre of attention but i wouldn't mind seeing some fresh blood. As an international fan, I do not contribute to ratings even if I watch RM without fail every week. So, I hope this at least gives a boost to their ratings! Also, it is better to add new members than to kick out old ones. But, in some corner of my heart I was still screaming- 7012 forever!!

Also @Tipsymocha welcome to the DB family. I am loving your writing style so so much. I have previously commented on how DB gives out news quite late, after all the hullabaloo has somewhat drowned, so I am glad that you would be covering such things! Good luck!

Based on the previous episodes which she guested in, Jeon So Min looks like she'd fit right in with the cast. I guess we'll just have to see with Yang Se Chan. I'm seriously just hoping that the episodes get better and better with the addition of the new two cast members. Perhaps there is hope for this show after all.

But hey, new maknaes! I'll have to get used to the fact that our Girin isn't the maknae anymore :( But that's okay, I guess? Maybe more people for the hyungs to "bully" :)

I guess what's worrying me the most is the distribution of screen time. Ji Hyo gets the least screen time as it is, what more with the addition of new members? Sigh. I hope she steps up and interacts some more with the others. It seems like she's somehow overshadowed lately. But I'm really looking forward to her "womance" with Jeon So Min in the next episode.

I hope this would bring good for RM. As a fan from first episode, I agree with tipsymocha that RM kinda 'lost' something. Korean netizen need to be more open to this option, since it will bring new dynamic in the show. Seven years is big things, but I think RM really need this member addition.

Ji Hyo is my favorite cast member. I hope she and Mr Capable won't leave once the newbies are settled in. The one who I think they need to get rid of is Big-nose - sorry I watch it with caps so I don't know what his Korean name is. But he isn't funny, I find him so boring. If they need to even it out, they can include Ha Ha too. Seriously these two don't bring anything remarkable to the cast. No hate please - just voicing out. Peace!

The earlier episodes always gave me goosebumps with the unexpected twists. I miss the name tag games, but I've always assumed that they reduced/removed it because 1) the cast get injured a lot from it, 2) they've become too good at it. The spy concept is exciting but too overused that the members expect it (remember LKS's recent epic fail! LOL)

Tbh I worry for SJH because whenever there's a female guest, she steps aside and gives the guest the spotlight. Will she also let JSM get the attention of being a girl? I feel like with the addition of another girl, she may get a even smaller role. Her Ace Jihyo and Monday Couple character is already lost. The boys all kind of have a character still, but they seem to have forgotten to create a new one for Jihyo. She's my fave member and I hope she never leaves.

I'm going to disagree and think that RM has gotten some of its mojo back even after the departure of Gary (still miss his witty quips).

There's been a lot of good funny banter btwn the RM gang and bringing back the punishments for a good # of eps have made things more interesting.

They still have the name-tag ripping game (or some variation of it) from time to time, but they can't do it all the time (unless there's a new "twist" to it, name-tag ripping can get pretty boring).

Love the addition of JSM (think she'll be great); not so sure about the other addition to the gang.

It really pissed me off that some rude kids spammed Jeon So Min's instagram with harsh comments, asking her to get out of RM, calling her names on her birthday! (Seriously, she posted a pic of herself happily blowing out candle on her birthday cake and some crazy netizens kept calling her bitch in the comment section *rolls eyes*)

I love her so much both in drama and in variety shows. She's hilarious! She's very honest and doesn't seem to care much about her image. She's not afraid to make fun of herself without appearing dumb or aegyo-ish.

I stopped watching RM like 2 years ago, but I'll definitely start watching again now.

SJH got disadvantage (seems like JSM get the attentions most even YSC) and advantage (she got a girl to be her company), the rating increased not only bcs JSM, but also SJH and LKS. SJH have been overshadowed and quiet, with this new members, it brought fresh air to the members. I really want JSM and SJH become a team. JSM is entertaining unlike SJH, but still SJH is quite good in playing games. JSM sometimes quite but when she speaks, i laugh. Shes hilarious and pretty. Love her. SJH is still my queen tho. SJH talks more. new members really did brought fresh air. Its so nice to see SJH back and talk again. Somehow it reminds me of old days when she used to be so talkative and playful. really love this episode and the previous one.
