Happy Friday!

Who is interested in an East Coast Dramabeans Birthday Party? Staff, can we make this happen when KCon comes to town?

I just mentioned this on another thread but I am compelled to mention it again. :)

PS: I'm excited to see the new site tomorrow!

Also, I live just blocks outside of Newark (in a quaint small town...yeah, I know, but it actually does exist!) and a short train ride from Koreatown, Manhattan, so if there isn't a staff member around here and you would need someone to do some in-person arrangements or scouting, I volunteer as tribute!

Hello my ex-neighbor (I used to work in Newark). yes I miss that short train ride from Manhattan. I could just go grocery shopping after work. Good old days :(
Too bad I can't join this Party (if it actually happens)

I will miss this site though, but hwaiting for the new change!

Happy Friday Beanies!

Haven't been around OT for a while, forgotten how much fun it is. ?

Wanted to share that the Boy started mainstream preschool this week and his teacher said that he was really good and he pleasantly surprised her by how well he integrated with everyone else. Also, after 2 days of mild protesting, he now sits through the Chinese lesson during school. Haha. Mommy is awfully proud! ?

Also, I'm irrationally and ridiculously addicted to Liar, it's really my guilty pleasure drama nowadays. It's been a long while since I've had such good angst and been rendered sleep deprived from marathoning. ?

And I finished Chief Kim finally and enjoyed every moment! That TT dance was hilarious. ??

Lastly IT'S FINALLY TIME FOR TYPEWRITER!!! Omo I'm so excited!! Hope it will be good!!!!

Hi, Michykdrama! I haven't been to OT in a long while too. Great news about your kid! :)

I feel the same way about liar and lover too. It would have made for a great marathon because I really want to know what happens next and it is giving me all these feels and i just want to stay in that world for as long as possible, lol. I thought of watching the japanese movie to see how it ends (because i am that curious) but held myself back because what if after knowing the full story, I don't want to watch this anymore or don't enjoy it this much. So, I decided not to spoil myself. This is my first musical drama and so now I am really interested in musical dramas as well. Because awesome music should be a given in them and good music in any language is just uplifting. I don't know if there are musical dramas with bad music. :P

the japanese movie ended before the manga ended, and had a different ending, so it's possible we're going to get a different ending.

I've read the manga and i still find it exciting to know what happens next because of the changes. that ending in ep 6 had me.

All of the version have different style on them. So watching or read them give different feeling and experience. I like how everything built to their own universe without have to make any of them inferior from the others. It gives me differrent joy.
My hope would only be, that this drama would never ever ever following the manga's ending. That would be too terrible :(

Hey hey Imbuk!

omo you read my mind exactly- i also don't want to leave their world once I'm in it! haha. I also am resisting all spoilers and am very glad that it's already Friday so that mean Monday is closer! XD

Me! Been eagerly waiting for the recaps to TLAHL! Kinda strange as I'm a 32 year old prosecutor but am deeply invested in this drama and the characters. It must be the very shoujo-vibe of the drama that hooked me -- I am an otaku through and through and back in the day I consumed shoujo manga like Skip Beat (I can't believe its still ongoing), Kaichou Wa Maid Sama, Special A, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, Love so Life and Ao Haru No Ride.

On that note, did any beanie here read the manga of TLAHL? I only saw the J-movie back then (Takeru Satoh is bae but the grown man and high school girl romance was a little uncomfortable to watch especially since he kissed her on their first date) and while I loved the movie, I am also liking the korean drama because it went in ways I didn't expect (Trainee Survivor show ala Produce 101) and the characters have depth (Crude Play, Chanyoung) and are easier to root for (Hangyul and Sorim). I only read the first few chapters of the manga so is the k version closer to the manga?

TLAHL fighting!

Skip Beat is still ongoing? Seriously? I gave up when everything becomes too complicated (around vol15?) and I innocently think that it's going to end soon. Even Hanakimi and Karekano ended in around 23 volumes

The K-drama actually take the route of the manga and it's quite similar (even more than the J-movie). But since I only read 8 volumes where Shinya is going crazy and Riko behaves stupidly, I didn't know which route this drama will take. I also too lazy to read the original manga (it's not fully scanlated. Stuck at volume 14) so I don't know whether the ending will take the manga's perspective or not

I've read tons of manga back when I was younger and I started to comment on this site because of a manga-based drama... Just in case someone wishes to read a good shojo, here are some that left a lasting impression:
korean:
- I wish...
- the tarot cafe
- cynical orange
- bride of the water god (the beginning part is great)
- flying flower

japanese:
- oboreru knife
- kamisama hajimemashita
- demon sacred

chinese:
- scarlet palace
- wedding
- gu fang bu zi shang (= general and I the cdrama)

0

Yes. Skip beat is still out there.. with no apparent sign to make its closure.
But well, it moves in a snail speed, I doubt you'd lose track on anything if you decided to go back and catch up to where you left it.

I did read the Manga of The Liar and His Lover, but that was a looong time ago when I was very much addicted to Manga's, like juggling 2-5 a day 'cause I just can't get enough..Special A still holds a special place in my heart, yes, pun intended, and I am so glad I had closure with that one. I stopped Kaichou wa 'cause scanlations ran out and life went in and well, I needed to live! I can't quite pick up the inthusiasm to start again, I don't know why.

Back to topic though, yes, I really like that this Kdrama version is a little lighter and more relatable and the characters are really fleshed out. For me the JMovie was too dark? I mean very, uhh, angsty? Sorry I can't describe it well. And the Manga was, personally especially the beginning I just couldn't buy it. The relationship started too sudden, and I just cannot, for the life of me, believe in love at first sight, which was how they started together..it was very smut-y though, be warned..hahah..

I have seen varied range of shoujos and personally hate them. KareKano had all the potential but after just 3 volumes it just blew everything. Many of the popular shoujo mangas are downright terrible.

Liar has a few interesting themes but overall it's a mediocre product. Thankfully i have now learned the art of Fast Forward.

Haha, I'm just a year younger and enjoy the shoujo too! I read the manga last week (at least the chapters that are available online). The basic elements are there but the tone is majorly different. The details are all different, which is to be expected. The backstories are all quite different too. Everything moves super quickly in the manga, with HG asking SR to be his gf on a whim the first time he passes her, after being mad at Yuna. Also the characters are definitely sleazier, with lots of ill-intent goin' down.

I loved the manga way before the jmovie and kdrama appeared, it was quite addictive and I remember thinking about its details several days after reading the respective translated chapter. I did not have a problem with the age gap in the manga, some 25 years old men can be quite young looking, I did feel however that Satoh Takeru looked too old next to the actress playing Riko in the jmovie. I was very excited to see the kdrama based on one of my all time favorite shojo mangas, but they changed the content so much, that I felt only the title, names and a few basic themes remained. As a fan of the manga, I was very disappointed. It is like loving the Pride and Prejudice book, feeling excited about its ecranisation, only to see that all the conversations are changed, Lizzie still feels like Lizzie though she speaks other lines, Mr. Darcy is a mix of a lighter version of Darcy + some traits of Wickham, his lines are different too, mr. Wickham is less wicked and lots of characters that you liked got wiped out for some misterious reason and got replaced with others that have nothing in common with the original (the main hero had a great but poor family, sisters, a mom and dad that had nothing to do with music, were bewildered at a musical genius being born in their rather ordinary family but nevertheless very supportive of him). The other characters also got a makeover, the ex-gf and the producer became less detestable, but a great deal of drama was lost in the process (they both were layered and realistic in the first place, but were changed to suit the fluffier new version). I still enjoy most of the kdrama, but look at it like at a whole different product, and cannot help but mourn the more faithful ecranisation of the manga that could have happened.

Loving the angst! Wanting to see how she performs with the new arrangement!!! Am squeeing over the OTP.

I know right! That was some cliffhanger there!
*spoiler ahead*
I was so excited to hear how Hangyeol rearranged the song, I wished we got to hear Chanyeong's version first though, or did we? And just didn't notice 'cause it was too 'plain'? 'Bout time that song 'I'm okay' leave my head, 'cause it's been staying in my head too much, I can't seem to get it over with. Sometimes I just notice I was humming the song...

Required fields are marked *

I am rewatching episode 6 right now -SPOILER AHEAD-

and the song rearranged by Hangyul was the song assigned by Who Entertainment to Sorim and co. for purposes of the survival program. So it isn't exactly the title track/debut song of their group but a cover of an old song, which is why Hangyul wanted to rearrange it (even if he doesn't get credit for it *swoon*) because the song isn't that good. Looking forward to hearing it! I am absolutely loving the 3 versions of Its Okay! The pop-ish version of Joy, the melancholy ballad of Crude Play and Lee Hyun Woo's piano version.

So the battle for the title track for Sorim's debut is still up for grabs between Chanyoung and Hangyul. :P

Waiting for recaps for The Liar and His Lover? *looks around guiltily and raises hand*

Like @ Sunshine I am not really in the intended demographic. I'm medical doctor mum of 3, but goodness I am really enjoying this version of the show. As I was explaining to my non kdrama watching friend, it's total escapism, I don't care it's not realistic blah blah blah, I deal with "real" stuff which sad and unfair and heartbreaking everyday this kind of story gives me life to get back to my work everyday.

Anyway, back to the show... The high school part is a bit icky but Han Gyul doesn't look as old as Satoh did in the movie and he is such a puppy in the kdrama I can't help but root for him. And I know there are comments that Soo Rim whinges too much about being kept in the dark but she is so honest and out there with her own feelings, frankly I think her reaction is exactly what you would expect from a high school kid. Looking forward to Han Gyul trying his best to get back in her good books.

PS - who else can't the song out of their head?!

Omo! Glad I'm not the only one loving TLAHL who's not the actual target demographic. Hello @Lime Chili and @Michykdrama and @GedSkaiKru! By the way, let me correct my age, as there is no edit button, for the sake of full disclosure as there was an issue back then about TLAHL audience being young tweens and fanboys/fangirls of Joy, I admit I am 33 turning 34 but still stuck mentally at 32. :P Plus, I am a mom of twin boys.

Frankly, for something billed as a youth drama, I really love the storyline and the characters. Yes, it has a lot of fluff and cheese, most of the actors are really young and green but the writing is good and the pacing is perfect. This drama, along with previous favorites like SWDBS, WLFKBJ, MDBC, Let's Fight Ghost and Oh My Ghost are exactly what I enjoy given I already work and prosecute terrible criminal cases. It's a nice and cheap dose of happiness without having to exert too much physical effort (I am just so exhausted at the end of the day).

Also, a shout out to fellow shoujo manga lovers @GedSkaiKru (ditto on your love for Special A but my eternal favorite is KareKano) and @Harunomasu. I love meeting fellow otakus who've crossed over to kdrama as well.

The song Its Okay OST is sooo good! I hum it every now and then and I found myself humming it earlier while putting my boys to bed. The Crude Play version is a masterpiece. Love the rap part! I checked out its english translation and man, I can just imagine Sorim's hurt face over the lyrics. No one can deny it is an epic love song but to know that it was actually an ode to someone else is heartbreaking.

yes! I remember being that age (also cause i just so happen to be in the targeted demographic hahah so its not that long ago) and being extremely delusional about my crush's every word and action! Though I knew in my heart there was a very little chance that he was talking about me, I could not help that holding onto that tiny fantasy that it could still be me! And I was equally devastated when i found out he had been secretly dating this freshman (we were seniors at that time), so I really can empathise with Sorim.

And I really feel its not just that, but its also finding out that your crush was in a relationship with this amazingly gorgeous and sexy celebrity who is every guy's fantasy, while you're just an ordinary highschooler who's been shamelessly chasing after him. How small would you feel and what a blow it must be to your self-esteem and pride.

So while yes, I do find the number of times she's been crying mildly annoying but overall I really can feel her. So ya I'm enjoying watching Han-gyeol doing some much-deserved grovelling for now tho im dying for them to make up already!!

Also, especially for those who have seen ep 6 already, am i the only one dying to know more about Soo-yeon (the girl with a crush on shi hyun)??? At first i thought she was just another bumbling shy assistant having a crush on this big superstar, but from her interactions with Shi-hyun and Han-gyeol in ep 6, and how they call her sunbae, i'm just really confused and curious now. Is this how its supposed to be or it is inconsistent characterisation? But either way there definitely are some sparks flying between her and Shi-hyun (im already 70% on that ship omg) and I want to see more of this dynamic! Plus I think the vid she was comparing the 'real crude play' vids online was a recording she made of crude play when they were still in high school so maybe she was their senior in school?

0

Oh ya can I just say how much I love the little interactions between Han-gyeol and Crude Play! It's really adorable how once Han-gyeol flares up at them they act all cowed but once he turns around they all make faces at him in ep 5 hahah. Hope we'll get to see more of that and really dig into the conflict between all of them. It's really sad how hard they try but it's never good enough.

Chan-young is another one though. Doesn't see that while he's railing on about Han-gyeol making him feel small, he's doing the exact same thing to the Crude Play boys, with his innate talent as a musician? And he was really insensitive about that comment during the call with CEO Choi in the van where all the Crude Play boys could hear him loud and clear (ep 6).

And while we're on bad team spirit, anyone else feeling mildly ticked by Sorim's disrespect for her friends/band mates? Maybe its cause they're childhood friends or maybe its just a detail that has slipped the production team's notice but Sorim hasn't really apologised to Jin woo or Gyoo-sun (since that first audition in ep 1) about screwing up. On the other hand, the two of them have just been sweetly concerned about her emotions and state of mind every time she's messed up a performance.

On a lighter note, Han-gyeol also needs to stop drinking beverages whenever someone mentions Sorim or he really is going to end up doing spewing it all out one day hhahaha.

Okay I'm (finally) done gushing/ranting, or at least until ep 6 recap is out! Until then i'll just keep refreshing heh.

*raises hands* I am a sucker for coming-of-age dramas done right, so I love the tone and pace of TLAHL. I watched the Japanese version a few years ago, and though I loved Sato's take on Aki, I also enjoy Hyun-woo's Han-gyeol. The lines in the drama are sweet without being too cheesy. Joy is obviously green, and she can't carry heavy scenes yet. But Sorim is made for her, just the right amount of melancholy and a whole lot of brightness.

I noticed some beanies are in a k-drama slump. Hope everyone is finding their way out. It's happened to me, and I usually jump to j-dramas or c-dramas.

For whatever reason I am actually enjoying quite a few dramas such as Perfect Wife, Radiant Office, Tunnel and yesterday I got a kick out of Queen of Mystery. None of them are heavy on the romance so maybe I just needed a break from that genre.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and to the Dramabeans staff: I wish for you all a trouble free "makeover".

@fangirl sy I'll throw some out there, and you can check reviews on mydramalist to see if they are your cup of tea.

Frothy Romance: Last Cinderella; Rich Man, Poor Woman, From 5 to 9, I Married as A Job.

Melo: The Hours of My Life

Police Procedural: Border

Misc: I haven't finished it and there was a k-drama re-make but Second to Last Love. I also plan on watching Jin which gets good reviews. I just recently found out Dr. Jin (k-drama which I dropped after 2 episodes) is a remake of the j-drama.

I feel your pain...I haven't dropped Strong Woman but it has kind of fizzled for me. Also, it is a long c-drama but so so good and over on DramaFever and that's Eternal Love/10 Mile Peach Orchard. A lot of Beanies are way more into J-dramas than me so maybe they can give you more options.

I'm having a good spell with k-dramas now, but at some point last year I went three months just watching J-dramas, a few C-dramas and all the seasons of Downton Abbey. Sometimes we just need a break.

1

the Jdrama Jin is not anything like the Kdrama Dr. Jin! it is good!
; )

0

Yesssssss 10 Miles Peach Orchard is good! Despite all the drama surrounding it right now with the movie comparisons and shizz it's a generally cute, if at times angsty, watch. Dilraba's character really won me over here man super adorb and gorgeous!

Also for those looking for a fluffy C-drama to fill your time, and you like slice-of-life dramas like me, I would strongly recommend Full Love (direct translation: Weekend Parents) starring Hawick Lau and Wang Ou (from one of my favourite C-dramas of all time Nirvana in Fire!!!). It's about a pair of a family of 'weekend parents' a trend in China now where young parents leave their kids with their grandparents during the week and only spend time with them on the weekend. It starts out really well, reflecting the tough realities of being young parents in a high stress city with high standards of living but towards the middle it starts getting more dog-blood-ish, which is the chinese term for makjang. Okay time for me to stop rambling but i'm sorry I really can't help gushing about dramas I love!

0

But YY's acting and the lead guy's in the drama has a huge gap. You are missing out for not checking the drama out

Shifting to dramas of other countries always helps getting back to dramas, amusing we don't stay in for other dramas of the same country but gravitate back towards k dramas.

I watched Full House Thai and am currently waiting for Chicago Typewriter only. The shows you mentioned are the ones I'm avoiding because I don't usually like cop procedurals/ thrillers etc. Let's see if CT can bring me back or else I am planning to watch Flowers for my life.

For example, I have Healer, Royal Family, and Goblin all archived, but haven't pulled out any of them to watch. I glance at them, but still watch something else. [shrug]

I do this too. But sometimes, you just can't get through them. Which is why I tend to return to dramas I've already watched when I'm in a drama slump. Then I can concentrate on he bits I like, and ignore the bits I don't like. The problem for me, is that sometimes it feel like watching a drama, or starting a new one, turn into a drag..

Happy Friday :)

Any word about joint Chinese-Korean drama productions being impacted by the current situation regarding THAAD?

Thinking about the supposed second season of "My Amazing Boyfriend"...

I was actually looking forward for My Amazing Boyfriend 2 so I was really affected by China's strictly enforced Hallyu ban. The drama was pure cotton candy fluff and I wouldn't mind watching another season for the two leads (especially after THAT ending).

At this point, I'm already losing hope for the film,
Catman, starring My Amazing Boyfriend's Wu Qian & EXO's Sehun and Jade Lovers, starring Lee Jongsuk and Zheng Shuang.

By what I've seen a lot of comercials have been switched and so have castings of korean actors in new dramas. Not sure how it is for those already being made or produced when THAAD got put into place though.

I have no time to write my OT this time, but for sake of the lasttt Friday OT, i will fulfilled this duty haha.

Who is hoping DB and its all traditions still stay the same after we move out next week?

I DO! I love friday OT, yearly DB Award, what we're watching, Drama wisdom, etc..

One thing i want to add, if DB's staff have time to review chungmuro movie just once in a while, like the hypest movie or controversial ones, would be great.
DB hasnt done that since age ago..

I watch : CHIEF KIM & FATHER IS STRANGE

Thats all. kdrama slump .
is Liar Game (kversion) is good?

Liar Game is just one of my favourite dramas. No extreme stakes (at least until the end :-p ), no romantic distractions, lots of intelligence, and Shin Sung-rok playing the villain. I am jealous of anyone who hasn't watched it yet :-)

I will miss the old DB look, but I'm sure I'll get used to the new one soon. Just hoping that we can still comment without logging in...

Wow, lovely CF (wish my ShinTak couple got something like this T_T), but I really want that camera now. I wonder how much it is. I love the fact that you can flip the screen up and take your own photos/record yourself. Can anyone vouch for this brand/model? I'm not very savvy when it comes to cameras.

It will be big day for DB tomorrow. Best of luck!! Drama-wise Yay for another Do Bong-soon episode (unfortunately I am kind of waiting for this show to end)

Jang Mi-kwon (28) who plays the psychotic kidnapper Jang-hyun in 'Strong Woman Do Bong-soon' had an interview.[Star News] Jang is doing a great job of making the kidnapper absolutely loathsome in the show.
Q:What did you think when you were casted for the show?
Jang: Actually I worried a lot. They can always change the actor who plays the serial killer character, so I felt burdened and worried a lot at the beginning. I didn't think I was confirmed for the role. I thought "There is no such thing as set in stone, but I'll just do my best".
Q:Why do you think director Lee cast you?
Jang: I used to greet him when passing by, and he said later that he saw manly and rough side of me. I tried to do the most of what director-nim asked of me since audition time. I did desperately, and maybe he took my persistent attitude favorably.

Q: Unlike the creepy mask, a flower boy face showed up when you took off the mask, which added the twisted impact.
Jang:I think writer Baek and Director Lee thought more of "He looks normal when he takes off his mask". Actually I couldn't wait until I took off the mask, even though I worried at the same time. I was worried because I didn't know what response people would have.
Q: Don't you feel burdened about playing a strong character of creepy kidnapper in your debut project?
Jang: Rather than being worried about the character, my concern was more about "Can I digest this character well?" That was my fear I've had ever since I started acting. I didn't think about giving a bad impression because of evil character I play. I just wanted to do acting for any kind of role.

Q: Does this show have special meaning to you?
Jang: Acting was hard because I felt hot and cold repeatedly due to the mask, but as time passes, I thought this is the character I might not be able to do ever again until I die. I think DBS will be the most meaningful project because it is my first project and had success.

Q:The actor who you face the most in the show is Park Bo-young. How is working with her?
Jang: Bo-young si helped me a lot from the first shooting. The first scene was when we met in the hospital, and she approached me first and said hi. And Bo-young ssi explains when directing is hard to understand for me. There are many things I learn watching her closely. I concentrate on emotional acting, but she is an actress I can learn a lot watching- the technical part like breathing, timing, movement etc in addition to emotional acting. I am also thankful to other actors. As the show passed middle point, I face detectives often in the show, and because they are big sunbae-nim, I felt uneasy.

But they were concerned if I might feel nervous,
and approached me one by one to say I could shoot one more time if I wanted. They tried to make me feel comfortable and I was thankful for that. I think I am very lucky.
Q: What is the main plot in DBS since it passed the middle point?
Jang: I don't know exact contents because script is being modified for the latter half, but the conflict with Gook-Doo will continue. Because I am an evil character, I will be losing and kept beaten by Bong-soon and Gook-doo, so the viewers will be able to watch having fun.

Q: There are feedbacks about the mask being creepy. What did you feel when you put it on first time?
Jang: I didn't know the mask would be like that. I haven't seen any silicon mask, or wore one before, so I didn't know what to feel, and when I first put it on, it felt strange. I couldn't hear people well, couldn't see well, and even had hard time to breathe. It was difficult at beginning because I couldn't hear directer-nim's directing. And when the weather was cold the mask got frozen.
When I went to the set with the mask on first time, staffs died laughing. Its bold head was so funny, even though when acting, it was scary because of the situation. There are masks which are scary, but the viewers said this one is creepy. Director-nim and writer-nim wanted the horror which could be felt in a movie, so I've been using it diligently.

Q: How did you feel when you took off your mask in the show?
Jang: My expectation and anxiety were half and half, well, anxiety was bigger. As we pull the all-nighter doing shoots, I couldn't do proper monitoring, and I was worried how I would appear. As I thought I could see many parts lacking in acting so I sweated. But when I put on the mask, my confidence went up. Because I can't see well, and can't hear well, I could act more freely not caring anything.

Q:Do you feel your new popularity?
Jang: I haven't been outside. And maybe because of my [different] image in and outside of the drama, I didn't feel anything different. (He has nickname 'SoonDoong-yi'=softie) It hasn't been long since I started doing Instagram, and I have no idea about international fans, but there are Arab language and stuff too. I check Instagram every day and feel very happy. I am thankful for people cheering me on.
Q: You went through some hard times with Kim Woo-bin(UF). How was his reaction about you getting spotlights for DBS?
Jang: I didn't know Woo-bin even when we went to the same school, but we became close after I debuted as a model and joined the same agency. Woo-bin had big influence on me- We started modeling together and did theater play together. Woo-bin is the friend who waited for my success and happy and concerned for me the most.

(More about this-[OSEN] During 2013 SBS 'Hwasin' show Kim Woo-bin mentioned "Doing modeling work I couldn't ask my parents for money so I lived in a jjimjilbang(Sauna) with friend Jang Mi-kwan. I wanted to tell him to give up that time, but held it. Now I am really happy". Jang said,
"The reason I lived in a Jjimjilbang with Woo-bin was because I didn't get paid for the model work I did. Because we didn't' want to ask family for financial help, we lived in Jjimjilbang. I was shocked when Woo-bing talked about that in a talk show. I was grateful he mentioned my name, but sad at the same time. Woo-bin monitored DBS and said things like "It was exactly you." Woo-bin is my friend who was confident and passionate even from college days. Even though he saved advice about acting when I joined DBS, he said things like "Don't be nervous. Don't be too conscious about people around you, because it is the biggest hindrance in acting." I meet him frequently because he is my neighbor. I want to succeed so that I can be value-add to Woo-bin." )

Q: Your debut project DBS is success.
Jang: We set 5% ratings as the highest goal when the show started. I was so curious about ratings and used to check the ratings first thing in the morning after the show aired. But when ratings went over expectations, I was so shocked and really happy, and the set atmosphere became much nicer. I am rookie in acting and my character is hard to digest to play, but because all actors/actresses do well, I am also get noticed. The main genre of the show is rom-com, but I am in charge of thriller part. Set atmosphere is dark when I act and they usually film at night when staffs are exhausted. But sometimes staffs pat my shoulder which makes me feel good and give energy. At the beginning I made many NGs because of clumsiness due to lack of experience, but staffs cheered me on as I got better.

Q:You debuted as model. Since when you wanted to do the acting?
Jang: I was track and field athlete but I had to quit due to injury. I went to study modeling per recommendation from friends. It was not my wish but when I passed the audition, I thought "This will become my career" and wanted to do well. Not long after doing modeling, I had acting lessons, and I realized. When I did modeling, I walked as I wanted, did everything including directing in front of camera and many people, but when I act, I had to express and portray according to the lines written in the paper. I thought "I watched TV without thinking. Actors are amazing people.". It has been around 7 years since I started acting. I appeared in a drama special in 2011, but I thought that was not the right time. After my army duty, I studied acting for about 3 years.

Q: You joined DBS after long preparation. How was the reaction from the people around you?
Jang: People around me have waited for me to show in a drama for so long, and they are very happy. They are glad they can watch me in TV. They cheer me on saying they are so glad that this is just my debut project, yet I am playing an important role.

Q: How did you prepare to act the kidnapper in the show?
Jang: I practiced acting 12 hours a day. There were times I had hardships. To do the serial kidnapper acting, I had to keep having bad thoughts in reality, and I became really dark enough to make people around me worried. I became a little better now, but those thoughts pop up sometimes. I learned that an actor has to distinguish reality and make-believe, and control his emotion well, and I practiced that way, but I guess I still can't control myself well.
Q: What is your real personality?
Jang: I am not fun and talkative person. I only become rough when I do sports. I'd like to stay home so my hobby is watching dramas and movies. When I meet friends, we do sports 9 out of 10 times. I think I am ordinary and my friends are out of ordinary.

Q; What kind of actor you want to become and what is your goal?
Jang: There are prejudice about a model-turned-actor. I could bear whenever I felt anxious because I thought I could wait longer because I learned less than the people who majored in acting, and I started later. There are people who waited 10-20 years until they finally shined, and also I didn't want to hear "Model can't do acting as expected." at auditions. Because people started acting earlier like Kim Young-kwong, Lee So-hyuk in addition to Kim Woo-bin do so well, I think me and my model-turned-actor colleagues will be able to do better. I monitor my acting in DBS sweating every time. "Why my voice and action is like that?" I couldn't watch comfortably because I see lacking and disappointing parts in my acting. I'd like to become an actor who does the best every time, every project and become an actor who can challenge variety of roles. My goal is to show good acting with different character. Because my first project did well, I worry thinking "What if I can't do well in the next project", but I will just do my best and keep working hard.

I LOLed seeing a comment under his profile like "He is fine as hell... he is too good at acting too because there were times I was scared and creped out. Wow looks like I am the only talentless person left ;-; also why do all good looking people have talents, what about us? The potato people?"
I am happy for Jang Mi-kwan but show- Ugh! Frankly I am getting more and more frustrated with the show and I blame writing. Writer-nim please don't disappoint us!

Thanks for transcribing these and though I'm not watching this particular actor/show, it's nice to see the insight he has in his acting and how seriously he takes it. It sounds like it will take him far--leading man material right here.

So cool of you to post the full interview. Thanks for sharing! :-)

thank you for the interview transcript. i became really curious about the guy who played the kidnapper in SWDBS and so looked him up only to be surprised that he was a rookie in acting and this is his first drama, i wasnt expecting that, that's for sure. im really impressed by his acting for his first time, that too playing a creepy psycho, that's pretty intense for a debut but his so good at being bad lol.

also yaya, he already did his military service, dont have to worry about him going anywhere, im going to keep my eye on him.

Currently watching Do Bong Soon, Perfect Wife. But there's no sense of urgency for me to watch either shows. So I guess in a slump right now.
Also just heard that Netflix has exclusive rights to Man to Man and will release it in batches of 8 episode. Not thrilled at all, as a viewer who relies heavily on subs, it means the subtitles will be late the same way like Night Light. So have decided to watch it after it finishes airing.
Just picked up a Tainwanese show, The Masked Lover, twins swapping place, heroine is a gang leader, hero is a police after her, the secondary couple equally charming and contract marriage, I am sold. Only issue, one episode per week which sucks for me, now I gotta wait.

Same shows - I'm looking forward to the upcoming sung joon show though. I'm also late to the game with tunnel and Whisper. Liking the characterisation.

I really don't like the Netflix method for Kdramas either. I lose interest if I can't watch along with the rest of the world.

"But there's no sense of urgency..." describes a slump, all right.

I know I'm in that place when I'm not even in a hurry for the last episode or two of a kdrama. Oddly, that just happened with The Defendant for me - i was keeping up all along and was even on the edge of my seat at times, but I didn't get to the last 2 episodes until last week. I guess the thrill was gone.

On the other hand, I just marathoned the first 6 episodes of Liar and Lover which made me realize it's been a while since I've done that, and I find some k-excitement in back-to-back viewing.

Are you watching My Father is Strange? Episode 10 was a real cliffhanger - so I am really looking forward to this weekend's episodes. Lee Joon, too, always. I am recapping the drama too, (click owl for my blog).

Now that delightful Chief Kim is finished, there were some interviews of the casts from the show. One was with Lee Jun-ho (27) who received praise playing a villain? character. Playing the finance chief Seo Yul Jun-ho succeeded in building the unique character 'MukSo'/gluttonous sociopath. He had Q and A session.
Q:How do you feel now that the show is finished?
JH:Scripts never came out early ever since I started 3 months ago. We almost did live-shoots from episode 5 or 6.
There were times I felt difficulties and wondered when the show would finish. But once it finished and I don't do shoots anymore, I feel awkward feeling like I should keep filming. It is bittersweet feeling.

Q:You played a new character in Chief Kim.
JH: Since I started acting 4 years ago I've done 4 projects. I was worried because of long break between projects but I wanted to do a good project and my goal was to widen the spectrum. While I was thinking I wanted to play a different role, I happened to see the scripts for CK and wondered how they would unwind Seo Yul's story because there were only 2 episodes of scripts. I took the role because I heard my character was villain and I thought it would be a refreshing challenge.

Q: You were well received by the viewers for your acting. Was there any secret in improvement in your acting skill?
JH:I try to be possessed by the character. I am a type worrying about how the character has lived. I think the character has to be penetrated in real life to be reflected in filming. Since I don't have much experience, I didn't go out of the house and lived isolated to achieve that. Since Seo Yul was a character who didn't have anyone around him and lived self-centered, I tried my best to fit into that character. In my previous project 'Memory', I was a nice lawyer who assisted Lee Sung-min sunbae-nim, so I tried to get stress to change to Seo Yul character. I had so much stress.

Q: What do you think about your nick 'MukSo'?
JH: I love it. When I talked to director-nim, the original set up for my character was diabetic. In the first script, there was a scene he took insulin shot. And director-nim said he wanted to have a non-hateful villain. I said "How about skipping that[diabetic parts]? I think this guy can be a person who eats the most delicious way as he can, and eats like he is really hungry and just loves to eat" and SY character was built.

yeah long interview continues...

Q:There were many eating scenes.
JH:I found I chew and eat that way for the first time- fervently like chewing the steel. I am similar with Seo Yul in that when I was a trainee, because there was not enough practice rooms, I had to hurry eat and claim the place. So I think I developed the habit of eating fast. There were even times I chewed on my tongue and bled while eating. There are occasions people don't eat the food placed in front of them in dramas, but I ate because we decided we would just do freely. In the meeting scene with chairman Park and manager Jo in a Japanese restaurant, I kept eating not thinking and had really hard time. I ate for 5 hours. It was delicious at first, but I had hard time later on. I couldn't spit out because it was expensive food. That was when I was eating 1 meal a day, so I took that opportunity and ate without care.

Q: I assume you got some offer for commercials?
JH: I heard I received an offer, but it went out the window when I threatened manager Jo in episode 14. My company said "Villain role can't get a commercial offer."
Q: Seo Yul was not completely villain.
JH:I started drama dreaming a real villain. But what I thought and what director-nim wanted was different. He said Seo Yul was not complete villain, and had a possibility for change. I wondered if I should act like a one-dimensional crazy bastard or man-child who had a reborn prospect. Anyway he seemed like a villain who didn't cross the line. He didn't like to hurt others and tried to trouble people within his capability. I acted with sense of justice at minimum because I thought that way it would be convincing when he transformed.

Q:Didn't you want to make NamGoong Min suffer more in the show?
JH: I usually think about and design what to do before shooting. But practice doesn't do any good on the set. While filming with Min-yi hyung everything went out of place. I acted with the intent I had to make Kim Sung-ryong character having no way out with my systematic way of thinking.
Q: You had kiss(peck, rather) scene with NamGooing Min.
JH:I think it was the best skinship. It is honor being able to do the skipship which I expected male and female lead would do. It was 100% ad-lib. As we play jokes, Min-yi hyung said "Should we kiss?" and director-nim said ok. I had doubts but it turned out fine. In the broadcast, NamGoong Min [after kiss scene] left with shocked expression, but actually he tried sticking out his tongue and throwing wink. I thought it was fun "Our drama can do this!". In a way CK had different tone from other dramas. I tried to do different things, like as I say lines I turned to the camera."

Q: Was there any scene you liked?
JH:I liked the scene where I kidnapped the manager Jo and threatened him. I couldn't even imagine speaking in banmal and yelling in front of sunbae-nim, but I had to do it without care, which showed Seo Yul's spoiled and different side. I had fun. I didn't know when I shoot, but he really looked like a psycho when I watched in TV. The beauty of a man-child who is strong in front of strong people, and is childlike in front of people he likes seemed to be shown as multi-dimensional.

Q: How was the scene you mentioned about the acting awards with NGM?
JH:It was very cheesy at first, but writer-nim changed expression to certain degree. Two men kept bickering but we thought we couldn't become too close, so we decided to act like children. I laughed due to its absurdity at first. We filmed saying "This wouldn't make it[awards] because it is early in the year" but it was funny. The scenes we received good response were amazingly kiss and ad-lib scenes.

Q: What if you receive the Best Couple award with NGM?
JH:I think I will accept in gratitude, but I would feel weird. It would be strange man-man couple receives the couple award. But we did kiss a few times so I think I will take it happily, still I wonder because this is early in the year.
Q: You had a little loveline with Nam Sang-Mi.
JH:I wanted to do a drama which is not about romance, and I think Yul had an open ending with Ha-kyung. In the final episode, Yul has a date with Ha-Kyung in a pizza place looking like they have met a few times by then. Usually Ha-kyung gives portion of her dish to Yul, or he takes food from others, but that time Yul gave piece of pizza to Ha-kyung, and I think it showed how Seo Yul has changed during one year. Since people want cider/feel-good plot in office comedy genre, more weights were on cider parts, and everyone thought loveline was not important. I think it was better leaving lingering feelings. I felt like we shoot a new drama that time. That was my last scene and I had trouble because we felt so awkward. Doing such acting at the end, I had fun feeling tickled.

Q:What do you think about the prejudice on 'Acting Dol'(Idol who does acting)?
JH:I think that all we have to do is acting well. It seems that if we do good, we get complements. But it also looks that I get complements because I am idol. I think we have to accept knowing if it means "He is doing better than expected" or "He is doing well as an actor" first. Anyway my conclusion is that all I need to do is acting well. I'd like to be proud to myself whatever I do.

Q:How were your 2PM members (He is a member of 2PM since 2008)? Did they monitor the show for you? Tack yeon is soon to do the army duty, how about you?
JH:Chan-sung monitored since the first airing of the show. Group members said "Shouldn't Seo Yul have to be more evil?" and I studied how I could do that. They kept cheering him on. Agency president was very happy for me and gave me a call everyday.
People mention Taek Yeon hyung about the army duty because he will go soon. But it hasn't been long since I started to work on individual level so I don't think anything other than working hard.

Jun Ho -you did good (I will vote for you for year-end break-out performance award)! I loved him as puppy lawyer in 'Memory' (and again almost loveline with Yoon So-hee.sigh).

other misc:
In Happy Together(aired on 6th) show, Lee Il-wha(mom from reply series) said actually her role in Reply series was offered to Kim Sung-ryong(Mrs.Cop 2), but she asked Kim she wanted to do it. Also among girls in three reply series, she said she loves Hye-ri the most. Lee said "I was worried at first thinking "How can an actress be like that? She is so free and easy." And she was like that even after time passed, so I like Hye-ri the best." Among boys, Lee said she likes Park Bo-gum the most.

btw Congrats for Lee Jun-gi and Jun Hye-bin dating -yeah it's about the time. I have heard that since 'Joseon Gunman' times.

Thank you so much for translating this interview @fan! :D :D

Where is Sera and all the Chief Kim crew? We get some interesting comments from Junho's perspective:

- Diabetic was a thing! But it turned into food lover. (Has there ever been a diabetic character in a kdrama?)
- Dry humour: 'Usually people don't eat their food in kdramas'. LOLL SO TRUE!
- He wanted to play a villain, PD wanted to keep possibility of change. Nice tension... resulted in the Yul that had us wondering if he was undercover.
- In essence: 'He is a man-child who is strong in front of strong people, and is childlike in front of people he likes.' Awww yes!
- On idols who act... they just need to act well. Well said.

Thank you for the translations fan! He did well in Chief Kim:) nice to know he had a good working relationship w/ the cast & crew, enough to make suggestions, making his character more fun!

So Junho came up with the eating gimmick? This guy is so young to be so sharp as an actor. And so loose -- the man of a thousand facial expressions.

I am in a serious drama slump- which is perhaps good for me because I am preparing for my country's civil service exam and I can do without my addiction for two months- but I also really want to see a good drama that can bring me out of this. I have even gone on to watch kpop videos to while away my free time!! Help please??
The criteria for what I need in a drama right now:
Short drama, cute story, doesn't eat up much of my time or brains.

Well, not helping me would also help me. Up to you guys. I am really confused. It is obvious, right? (And no, I am not drunk)

Also, goodbye to this version of DB. You will be missed. I hope no data is lost in the transfer. I would still want to have I Remember You ep 16 as my go- to place sometimes.

I would say- just concentrate on preparing for your exam. Dramas will still be there after you are done. And you can always read DB recaps if you feel you are missing out something.

Try Liar?
It's totally my guilty pleasure drama right now.

But I found it really addictive in that I would start and end up marathoning all the episodes till I was up to date. ?

So maybe @fan's suggestion is better for your exam ?

I have also been in drama slump for weeks. I am currently pregnant and doc advised me to have bed rest a lot so I only work half of the week. I am so bored at home because nothing is engaging on TV. It's even worse because I have morning (all-day) sickness and I really want to have a crack drama to make me forget. How I wish I can turn back time to watch Healer and I Remember You for the first time. Rewatching it for the 5th time lose the crack factor unfortunately.

And good luck for your exams!

Oh congratulations!! :D Hope you get over your morning sickness soon.. May I suggest reading novels? It might help pass your time

And I know exactly what you mean! While I love Healer and IRY, I can't keep re- watching them because there are no surprises left.. I know exactly what is coming each episode.

I have watched Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossom from start to finish three times (all 58 episodes x 40 min each) and the middle episodes probably six times. Unlike many other Chinese dramas which drag in the middle, this one's good from start to finish, with the best in the middle!

@fan Yeah I think your suggestion is good for me! I should be concentrating!

@Mickydrama I am purposely staying away from Liar after ep 4.. It seemed like the exact thing that I want to watch but I thought it would not be good for me if I watch it every week and it was better to leave before I am in too deep!

Try Go Ho's starry night if you haven't. Fits your criteria. Won't even take much of your time.

Second this. It's pretty much pure brain fluff. Splish splash love is also good and only like 2 episodes if I remember correctly.

@wapz and Manin I have sadly (glady) seen those shows already! Loved Splish splash love and didn't mind Go Ho too much. I think it would also be safe to say here that I have even watched 7 First Kisses (yes, that stupid ass show-cum-advertisement)

Ahh 7 first kisses such a treat for brainless watching. You also have 12 men in a year which is in the same sorta category.

Or there is alwasy exo next door if you want idols

Good luck on your exams! And lol that you mentioned I Remember You 16--I was there the other day but nobody else had been for a while, I wanted to say I agreed about it being a tome to SIG. ^^ Hopefully we can find another private corner to chat in! Except I really have no idea how commenting will work with the new site--I'm excited to see how it looks!

I second @Michykdramas recommendation: after the exam, Liar would be a great choice. ^^ Super cute.

I am also wondering how the new site would work.. I am quite excited for tomorrow.

And I hope your friend loves IRY as much as we did. Seo In Guk and Park Bo Gum (along with Jang Nara and Choi Won Young) are brilliant there.
