OT week 10! Or is it week 1 on the new Dramabeans? (Apologies now for the long post and possibly no line breaks ahead!) Another busy week for everyone, it seems, especially @javabeans, @girlfriday, @mary, etc, etc, etc. Thank you for working so hard! But why did you have to roll out the new site the same week I started my blog???

Oh well, sleep continues to be overrated.

Speaking of, the new blog is up at https://freethekimchi.wordpress.com/ and also will be on freethekimchi.com eventually, when we figure out how to map it there. I can’t believe the domain wasn’t taken!

It’s been Goblin all week this week, but when has it not been about Goblin in the last 10 weeks with me? Honestly, I can’t wait for Man to Man and Circle, and even more excited Man to Man is on Netflix! I hope they sub it well, because if not, I may have to write some nasty letters. I saw that there is a classified for subbers from Netflix, LOL.

Anywho, my first meeting of Goblin/Kdramas was last Saturday, so while Dramabeans was working on the new site, I was hosting 10 or so people at my house for an afternoon of Galbi, Goblin, and Gong Yoo, not necessarily in that order. How happy was I? Rolling with a bed full of puppies happy! These are Kdrama newbies, even greener than I, so I wasn’t sure how they would react. Many of them hadn’t ever watched anything in another language. But it wasn’t long until they understood my fascination, nay, OBSESSION, with this genre of entertainment. Although I was just going to screen the first episode, we ended up starting half of the second until real life interfered. (But dressing up, going to a fundraising dinner, taking inappropriate pictures with my husband in a photo booth, winning $100.00 worth of dry cleaning in a raffle after cleaning up at a black jack table was pretty fun too.)

So next month, we’ll continue the series, and if I play my cards right, I’ll be sharing Goblin with my best friends until the end of the year, which is just fine by me!

So my husband said this to me this week while wearing his one-size-too-small Snoopy (the dog, not the rapper) t-shirt:

Husband: *proudly* Look at my pecs in this shirt!

Me: *looking at his chest, trying to hide my smirk*
Yes, honey, they look as almost as good as Gong Yoo’s. *wink*

Husband: *looking at me flabbergasted because I hadn’t mentioned Gong Yoo in about 2 weeks*

Husband: *trying to think of a come-back*

Husband: *still can’t think of one*

Husband: *sighing* You’re right, they’re not as good as Gong Yoo’s. But how about these guns? *flexes biceps*

Me: *hysterically laughing, hyperventilating, looking for a paper bag to breathe into*

Me: I *pant, pant, breathe* LOVE *pant, pant, breathe* YOU, HONEY! *Gives husband big hug*

Me: Are you crying? I thought you were being ironic!

Husband: No *sniff, sniff*

Moral of the story: For future reference, jokes about my husband’s body are off limits.

Second...

Third moral: I’m a terrible wife, who laughs at the expense of her husband.

Oh, ally! How I wish your part of middle America was anywhere near St Louis so I invite myself to dinner. I can NOT believe 'free the kimchi' was available, that is just - well, meant to be, I guess! I like your new blog, best of luck with the Gospel of KDrama ??

As far as where "middle America" is, as the saying goes: I'd tell you but then I'd have the kill you ?. Aside from this, we are intensely private people and my husband would probably never talk to me again if he knew I was sharing all these stories with complete strangers! But they are complete gold and someone besides me should enjoy these, even if just for a little while.

And, thank the dramabeans' gods for line breaks! *bowing lowly*

Hello beanies!

To all those people who recommended Chief Kim, THANK YOU! I'm loving it and Namgoong Min is perfect for this role! Surprised at Junho's improvement in the acting department too.

Still waiting for Chicago Typewriter's next episode. And sad that SWDBS is ending this week. It'll be difficult to say goodbye to our OTP.

Happy Easter Everyone!!

I am at that week in drama land where :
- one of my favourite dramas is ending this week (SWDBS) and I'm panicking about what to watch next, and
- my other drama that I'm watching (TLAHL) has hit the mid-drama frustrating section - I can see the noble-idiocy-forced-separation-misunderstanding coming at me like a truck of doom.

What to do what to do? #firstworlddramaproblem

Can't we create a ban for noble idiocy ? Like too much is not good for our heart and mental health.

Well, I don't see it as Noble Idiocy, but a necessary step in order to make our characters grow. Han Gyul needs that time to figure himself out, so even though I'm not big on the angst, I do see the point of it. But that's just me. :) I love this drama tho. :D

Haha, I literally just marathoned the show because everyone's been saying how sweet it is. It actually surpassed my expectations for it, but I did face-palm when I realised what I came just in time for, lol. Still, this show is called The Liar and his Lover so I'm hoping this will be a point when So-rim will have to look past his noble idiocy and believe in the feelings beneath. I don't mind them taking time to focus on her debut either.

Haha I am totally with you about the growth. I think the bit I hate is that the characters never ever talk about stuff with their significant other. It's always doing what they think is the best for everyone without any clear idea of what the other person wants. I guess that makes it "noble idiocy!"

I got ever so frustrated with TLAHL that I'm in a hiatus at the moment. So then in two weeks I can bingewatch and get over the mid-drama slump :) That's not my usual MO but as I'm a newish K-Drama convert, I have MANY MANY series to occupy my time with :)

Hi Beanies ! Did you all spend a good week ?

Mine was just : Period exams + upcoming dramas + currently watching dramas = mental breakdown ! And I will travel to Germany to take summer courses for a month. Seriously, I don't know if I will have time to watch dramas. The positive point is I won't have to torture myself waiting for new episodes. I'm waiting for Ruler – Master of the Mask and Man to Man.

This week I began watching Chicago Typewriter and Mystery Queen. I totally love Yoo Ah In look in the 1930s ! I like Choi Kang Hee ahjumma character, she reminds me a bit of Miss Marple.

This year in addition to Gil Ra Im and Shi Won, we can add new fangirls in dramaland : So Rim (The Liar and His Lover), Jeon Seol (Chicago Typewriter) and soon-to-be on screen Cha Do Ha (Man to Man) ! I relate sometimes to their reactions to their favorite group/singer/writer haha.
Do you other dramas with fangirls or fanboys as main character ?

There is a KBS Drama Special I recently watched : The Legendary Lackey. I remember seeing the main actor somewhere but I don't remember where. I liked the friendship and the quirky tone. I wish School 2017 will be more like this with a female centric friendship. I want more of female friends in dramas.

I'm looking forward to Son Ye Jin new film and hope Ha Ji Won and Song Hyekyo will choose a project this year. It will make me happy having my favorite actresses on screen this year.

Flower released Moon Jellyfish and I'm in love with this song and the choreo. I'm not a rhard core fan of them but I appreciate their songs. Dreamcatcher caught my eyes with their Jrock sound mixed with Kpop elements. That's a group I will follow more in the future.

Happy Friday and don't eat too much chocolate !

The Legendary Lackey (aka The Legendary Shuttle?) lead has played the king in Mirror of the Witch, and I remember him well as the bad seed turned good from School 2013. I know he's been in other things, and I want to say his name is Lee Ji-hoon. Hang on, gonna do some fact-checking... Yup, born in 1988, not the one born in the 1970s, like me.

Required fields are marked *

I'm loving how the story with both the Crude Play boys and Yoona is given so much depth. I feel for all their situations. In fact, I'm enjoying it so much that it's kind of disappointing when they rely on petty (romantic) jealousy to drive Yoona or Chan-young, because they have so much more going for them as characters. I find their conflicts within the music industry very compelling.

I love it so much, I die every time Joy and Hyun-woo are on-screen together. I think this character is super easy for Joy to play because she doesn't have to do much acting as So-rim. Of course, there are moments when you notice her inadequacies, like she can't really emote with her eyes but I still love her to death in this role. I hope, however, that this will be the first and last role she plays until she takes proper acting lessons. I love Lee Hyun-woo as Kang Han-gyul so damn much. At first, I was worried his character would be a broody musician type but he's really just a normal guy who's a tax obsessed with his music being perfect. Most importantly, he's playing an age appropriate character. I cannot tell you how happy that makes me.

Should i watch whisper? I was hoping for a 'i hear your voice' kind of show, but this seems much darker.

Required fields are marked *

It isn't really 'I hear your voice' - For this drama the two protagonists are like anti-heroes? So while we want to root for them sometimes it's a little difficult to because of all their actions and portrayal of human nature etc. But I also think that this is the beauty of the writing - in the creation of truly complex characters!

Also the romance between the two protagonists of this drama is virtually non-existent (hints but definitely hasn't happened yet).

Sill, I think Whisper is quite gripping and exciting with all the politics and betrayal - a good replacement for the Defendant!

Hey everyone! I haven't posted in OT for a while.

I'm in a bit of a drama slump... a big one, actually. I'm currently abroad and won't be back in the USA for about a month, so my ability to legally access dramas is surprisingly limited because the selection on Viki and DF here in Spain is pitiful compared to the USA. And the ones I CAN watch haven't kept my interest.

I eventually dropped Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. It was cute at times but I got 10 episodes in and realized I just wasn't jumping for the next episode. I've recently come to the realization that I ain't got time for something that isn't keeping my attention, so I've been dropping more and more dramas. It's a freeing feeling, haha.

I am watching ONE drama, though. An old one.

Wish Upon a Star (5/20): I actually didn't like the first episode much, but pushed on to episode 2 just to give it a fair chance. So glad I did! I'm surprised by how much I like this. Forced cohabitation dramas are a dime a dozen, but the fact that she has to take care of her 5 siblings (and hide them) gives this more weight. The kids are super cute and I'm really enjoying it! The romance really isn't there yet, though. Like, at all. It's almost non-existent.

So yeah, it's fun so far. Except for the melodramatic chaebol family bit. I hate that part. A lot.

2

reply

Required fields are marked *

I loved the kids! I want to watch right just see Parang. And there will be plenty of romance in the love triangle that's coming. Palgang was frustrating in the first episode but it made her growth in the drama al the more impressive.

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Oh, I agree. Pal-gang was soooo incredibly selfish in episode 1 and that's a big part of what turned me off (along with the fact that I actually laughed at some of the melodramatic scenes... haha). Then all of the emotion of episode 2 sucked me right in. I can't imagine having so much responsibility thrust upon my shoulders so suddenly. Granted, she should have been more responsible from the get-go, but as you said, this is what makes her growth so much more sweet. Looking forward to the romance!

Oh, I've actually been here since January. I tried the whole VPN thing at first but just couldn't be bothered, honestly, lol. I think I would definitely have used a VPN if I couldn't access any dramas at all, but since I can get some I've just been dealing with the restrictions.

Wish upon a star is one of my all time favorite dramas. It has so many flaws (the romance development being one of htem) and yet I cannot help but love it. The kids/siblings and their relationship, pluss the main heroine's growth really is the main drive force for me in it though. I love the scene where she makes a desition and cuts her hair.

(and everyone hate the melodramtic chaebol family bit ;) And the second female lead... ^^)

Yep, I honestly think the sibling relationship is strong enough to stand on its own and they don't need any of the other unnecessary plot points... but oh well. :) And glad to know I'm not alone!

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Oh I agree. In a way that's one of the biggest differenve between k- and jdramas: the need to ALWAYS have romance in the picture. Somewhere. I think the drama could have been stronger if the focus had been on the siblings. Or even just letting the romance come about because of her change and her determination for her siblings and not the way it did.

Like you, I've been watching vintage Kdramas (and movies) and have been enjoying them a lot. Back in November, I watched STARS FALLING FROM THE SKY (alternate title) at KissAsian, which offers subtitles by the incomparable Written In The Heavens Subbing Squad. It's a good show, with many heartwarming scenes. A nice family drama wrapped in an office romance and bundled with chaebol scheming and mayhem. It was so good I marathoned it in two days.

Shin Dong-wook was my main reason for tuning in. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool SOUL MATE fan, and am eagerly awaiting his return to acting in LOOKOUT.

Thanks to DramaWiki, I learned that each of the Jin kids is named for a color. Now Pal-Kang's fiery temperament makes sense: her name is "Red"! The eldest? boy is played by Park Ji Bin as Jin Joo Hwang "Orange". Kim Yoo-Ri of KPOP group Girl Story plays 2nd daughter Jin No Rang "Yellow." Joo Ji Won as daughter #3?, Jin Cho Rok, "Green". Chun Bo Geun as son #2 Jin Pa Rang, "Blue". Infant son Nam Bit, "Indigo."

While half-brothers Kang-Ha (Kim Ji-Hoon) and Ju-Ha (Shin Dong-Won) -- and their Korean-American nephew, Tae-kyu (Lee Kyeon), who is a supermarket heir and supposedly studying -- took turns vying for the affection of insurance saleslady Pal-Kang, they were always good sports and cared deeply for each other.

Actually, the chemistry between the whole cast was cute. The kids and their pseudo-uncles and cousin were heartwarming, humorous, touching, and down to earth in innumerable little ways. Shin Dong-Wook was his usual charming self. I really liked the way the relationship between him and his half-brother was portrayed. He and Kim Ji-Hoon were handsome as heck, with good rom-com timing.

Well worth the watch. The child actors who played the five younger siblings were ueber-cute and did a great job, especially the younger girl and boy (Green and Blue, respectively). Orange, the eldest boy, was a very responsible kid. I really liked how he rode herd on the younger kids. -- And I loved their late parents to bits. Grandpa (Lee Soon-Jae) and the elder cleaning lady (the late Kim Ji-Young) at work were also great. I've seen him in other shows, and love his voice.

Since you like this Kdrama, you might want to check out another vintage one: BAD FAMILY / FAKE FAMILY SERVICE. The title is a bit strange, but it is another heartwarming family show about families of choice.

How's everyone doing with the new DB? I'm loving it! All the new features are great, the DB team did such an awesome job, congrats!

I'm planning to go to Italy later this year with my friend, thinking August or October, which is better? I heard Italy is hot in August and crowded too especially Venice, and Venice is definitely on our list. Our country is hot, really hot like we don't even feel our winters, it's summer almost all the time so we don't want to go and feel no difference (weather wise). We're thinking Milan, Como, Venice and Cisily, we only have those two months as options, we'll be pretty busy the rest of the year, so when should we go?

buongiornio, azzo! LOL. Wow, this week's OT has lots of travelers. Given the choice, I'd pick October for Italy for weather and for smaller crowds. I hate being hot when traveling and would much rather require a light sweater! It will still be quite warm in Sicily and have nice/autumn colors in Milan and Como. Have you already visited Rome and Florence? It would be hard to visit Italy and sacrifice seeing them! The summer crowds in Florence are very bad, like in Venice. Have a great time, buon viaggio!

Va bene, azzo, October is the better choice. Venice and Florence will be packed almost all year round, you just have to expect it. They're ancient cities with narrow streets and they fill up fast! If you can do 20 days, more time in Italy is allllways better than less time. MMmmm! And as korfan points out, you have a better chance of meeting Italians in October than in August when they're all on their own vacations in Greece or Sweden or, I dunno, the Grand Canyon ? I haven't even been there in August but central Italy was beastly in early July (and I'm from a hot, humid place), so: October, all the way. Buona Sera!

I know Venice a bit. August in Venice is horrid. Sometimes the canals smell and nowadays too many tourists everywhere. Huge cruise ships sometimes overshadow the shoreline of Castello area( east of St. Mark's Square). Once those tourists got off, touristy areas were packed like sardine. October was better but it was more than twenty years ago. I was in Florence in mid October three years ago and the place was filled with tourists. I personally think Como is overrated and like Lugano, Ascona and Locarno in Switzerland. Milanese prefer to go Italian Switzerland for more polished /clean atmosphere. Sicily is lovely but it is rather a big island and again it is far better going there in October cause Sicily in August is hot( but usually very dry) They got some great Greek sites and foods are great.
Usually restaurants quality in August in Italy go down cause chefs tend not to work during mid August. In Oct and Nov, there are some wonderful seasonal foods available in Italy!
Enjoy Italy!

Italian beany here! Hello! August is a no go time for Venice. It is too hot and the insects will eat you alive! October is much better. Maybe a bit more crowded than August but you will be able to breath. Plus mid August is Ferragosto (Italian holiday) and for at least 2 weeks lots of shops etc are closed since most of the country is on holiday. Milan is ok but it is not the prettiest city: city centre part with Duomo and Via Montenapoleone with all the boutiques is ok but compared to Florence you will see the difference. It is an industrial city. Como (Lake and city) is lovely and not too far from Milan. Sicily will be still nice and warm in October...you will see people still on the beach and swimming in the sea!

True! Keep hydrated and go for an aperitivo in the evening (cheaper than dinner but just as tasty). I would add Bologna as well (I went to uni there) and it is the best place for food. Most Italian dishes people love around the world come from that city/region.

Good morning!

I am so bothered by the deer in Chicago Typewriter with chains around their necks. Then they are let loose and cause Se Joo to plunge over the cliff – what? I think there is a kdrama deer theme going on with the white deer head over Min Hyuk’s bed (SWDBS), too. Has anyone spotted other deer wandering around out there in kdramaland?

*spoiler* Kpop Star season 6 winner Boyfriend – they deserved it, both are very talented. I’m guessing they’ll go with YG. I didn’t think this season was as exciting as the previous ones, though.

Also watching Strong Woman (ep 14 *sigh* *♥flutter* and Liar Lover.

*spoiler* My Father is Strange ep 12 ending with Yoo Joo and Mi Young meeting face-toface – whoa! Poor, poor Mi Young. Love Lee Joon’s acting (how cute was his little victory dance when he got the part). The Byun family is amazingly on each other’s sides and I absolutely love that. Look how fast Dad came around with Jun Young, like he was in hot water for 24 hours if that. There are 50 episodes total and I am recapping every last one of them. Oh, in Secret Garden Kim Joo Won was given a herd of deer as a gift from someone who hoped to become his father-in-law. Typically, rude KJW sent it back. Seriously, who's gives a herd of deer? ?

Lord Cobol -

Ha! Yup! There sure was. ...... But if I remember correctly, the deer actually showed more movement than some of the actors we sometimes see. In Mask, as the vehicle was speeding down that road, the deer actually got out of the way.

The deer deco is very fashionable at the moment. Lots of home decor websites have them. Sow lots here in the UK...no idea why so I guess kdrama decorators just follow suite and place them here and there.

For I think the first time this week, I actually got close to 8 hours of sleep last night! I blame real life, since that really is the culprit this time I and not dramas. I definitely prefer losing sleep to dramas. But the worst of it is past and I can relax! Also, Happy Easter! Or rather, I wish you all a good Easter. ^^

I don't know that spaces work yet, so I'll just use numbers: 1) Mystery Queen: Oh my goodness this show is just so quirky! I love it, and I've stayed for the last two weeks, so I think I'm all aboard.

2) Liar and His Lover: If this were any other drama, I would say we were headed into the major angst zone. And I would be bracing myself for the next four episodes, since I have the hardest time with angst. However Liar and His Lover has kept a quick pace for everything else so far, and I have hope. Especially since they've managed to offset the angst with cute scenes to this point. Plus, I still need my kiss! Will I never get my kiss?! I need something to get me through the hard times! (resists asking @michykdrama to maybe make a gif or two of the phonebooth, or elevator or bus scene)

3) Running Man: It started with a school project (we had to compare versions of an Asian variety tv show, list the differences and why those might arise, and now we're recreating them). But then I got smart and just googled: LJS Running man, FT Island Running Man, and JCW Running man. ^^ So now I have a queue.

4) SWDBS: Looking forward to the finale!

5) Tunnel I absolutely love this show. I will be heartbroken if he's not reunited with Yeon-Sook at the end!

Aaaand I think that's it! So much, I know, I'm surprised at myself when life has been so crazy. And It's not slowing down, either! I have to run to a Real-Life appt now, and then off for a busy day. But I wanted to stop by DB first and say good morning!

I've caught both weeks now, and while it takes a bit of suspension of disbelief, I've really enjoyed it. ^^ Sherlock Holmsian setups are admittedly one of my favorites, but I think it's really our Ajhumma detective as the Sherlock that I'm loving the most. I'd give it another episode and see if it matches your tastes. I hope your real life is getting less hectic too!

I'm also in love with Tunnel. That drama got my brain overwork throughout the week, thinking about all those oddball characters and possible theories. I want Kwang-ho to go back to '86 and finally reunite with his beloved. But I know that I would be really sad to see him part ways with Sun-jae, future Sung-shik, all his future team member, and even Jae-yi.

That's true!! Ah, now I don't know what I want. Scratch that, I want his wifey to come to the future too (maybe that's why her SSN is expired!). And I think it is the characters I love most in this show--it's not the most twisty turny crime thriller, but I've never seen a group dynamic like theirs. They have everybody: the cold geeeenius, the brilliant young high-ranker, and the experienced gruff sunbae... from the past? I love seeing how they all interact. And the main mystery is still really good, and the episodic ones are just fun to watch.

Hello everyone! After recommendations from the OT a couple weeks ago, plus people always referring to its greatness, I decided to watch The Princess’s Man this week. Wow! It sucked me in at once and I had little choice but to marathon it during my spring break. After I read and enjoyed JB’s fab review. My feelings were: Wow! (Again) It was a very well-woven story that kept you interested throughout. It did seem like more of a political intrigue sageuk with romance thrown in, during some stretches. To me, it also felt very, very heavy for a very long time. Good ol’ No Gul from the boat was meant to be some comic relief during a long dark stretch of episodes, but he didn’t quite bring enough relief. I wished there was a little something to break up the struggle, though the intrigue of it all always kept me wanting to find out what would happen next. I'm very glad I watched it, so thanks for the recommendations, beanies! Episodes from current on-air fav Radiant Office was a great change of tone to watch right after.

In this drama, I felt very sad for Shim Myeon. He was definitely a fellow who made some very terrible choices, and you could see how they affected him. I liked how there was never a moment in the drama when anyone said that the feud and resentment between Seung Yoo and Myeon was all because of a woman– because dramas and film have a tendency to do that, and it wasn’t all about Se Ryeong. It was their families, their political loyalties, their friendship…and Se Ryeong. Though it was not necessary for this story, I personally would have liked to see some more scenes between SR and Myeon before things got ugly. I’m talking about some scenes that established a little more of a friendship between them, so that his obsession had a little more to go on. I do understand, though, that the promise of marriage and Myeon’s firs impressions of SR were enough to keep his particular character going. At one point I thought that for Myeon, Se Ryeong was the only thing “good” left that he was fighting for. If they had a deeper relationship, and if SR had been less fierce and more kind toward him, then that would have added additional (and I’ll admit it, unnecessary) conflict to the drama. She was 110% Seung Yoo’s girl from the first horseback ride to the last, and that reflected her strong feeling and strong character. But why did I just feel so sad for Myeon?!

i know, it was very sad for him... but he should've given up, really. if only for his friend's sake, right? glad you liked the drama, it'll always be in my Top 10... even after the PSH scandal - which i consider was just very poor judgement on his part, and nothing worse...

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today! The first OT on the new website! .......

Wishing a Happy Easter this weekend to all who celebrate the holiday. ........

Watched this week:

Defendant - It may just be me, but I don't think I've quite figured out exactly how Kang Joon-hyuk fits into the story. I mean, he was at the apartment the night in question, but did he already know Cha Min-ho was going to come over later? Did he and Cha Min-ho have a meeting about that to set things up? All I know is Kang Joon-hyuk did not investigate correctly and is later helping Cha Min-ho. I'm thinking I missed something here. .......

Perfect Wife - Jo Yeo-jung is simply fantastic as the creepy/emotionally unstable/psychologically scarred Lee Eun-hee! .......

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon - I watched ep 10 and half of 11 this week. ..... The appearance of the doppelgänger, I can't believe it's the same actor from Chief Kim in this role! .......

Mystery Queen - Interesting to watch Kwon Sang-woo in a comedic role. I don't think I've ever seen him in anything comical. ..... Liking how Seol-ok catches all the details. ..... Already wondering about that husband of hers we haven't seen yet. .......

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

For Defendant, Joon-hyuk has no idea who the killer was. Neither does he know that Ji Soo will die later that night. Really, I think his character's purpose was just to show corrupt officials and betraying friends to rise to the top.

Required fields are marked *

Mango Juice - I did get the corruption part, as well as the friendship betrayal. I just thought that since he constantly looks like he's in a state of fear, so much so that he went as far as to take out the stuffed Nemo from the collected evidence, just so that no one would know he was there that night, that he might have been in on things from the outset.

1
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

He fears his downfall, which lead him to cover up the fact that he was in Jung-woo's house on that night. He tainted the evidence because he got the chance to be the lead prosecutor in Jung-woo's case - the hot topic during that time - which he could use to make a name for himself. If he showed up in the camera footage that he was inside the house during the assumed time frame of the murder, then he'd be dropped as the prosecutor and turned into a witness, or worse, the suspect. Kind of complicated thinking, but he's too anxious every single time. And he chose to save himself instead of his friend. Sigh.

So I would like to know what "Downton abbey" is really about.
Can someone explain it to me,please?

On simpler terms, which K dramas is it similar to?
Slice of drama, like miseng .
Makjang ,like daily soap.
Or with some mystery.

Help me, please.

I liked Downton Abbey. Instead of the British costume dramas which just focus on the Lord of the manor, this show has all the drama of the staff and the family living in the manner. They interweave sometimes soapy drama stuff into what is going on in the world and country. It starts with the sinking of the Titantic and goes through WWI and into the Jazz Age. I don't really have a k-drama comparison though. I guess I would call it a family drama with a mystery or two thrown in and a dash of makjang here and there as well as multiple romance stories. It's worth giving it a go.

And before DOWNTON ABBEY, there was the original UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS (1971-75), which depicted the lives of an aristocratic British family and their servants from 1903-1930. ;-)

Required fields are marked *

I loved Downton Abby. It was my first crack drama. I watched it on BBC/England Time before PBS showed it (through VPN) but I also love historical fiction. I think it's worth watching just for the one liners of Dame Judy Dench. She's amazing in this. The love stories between the characters, both between servants, and ladies and lords are compelling. It's about an aristratic family who is running out of money, has to figure out how to continue supporting the people that work for them, and also their own lifestyles. It's a time of change with WW1 and the 1930's on the horizon as well. The detail to Edwardian customs, costumes, furnishings, and setting is breathtaking. The Britsh love their history and nothing is out of place. Quite different from kdramas in this respect. Also, I'm pretty partial to Dan Stevens right now and he's in the first and second seasons, I believe. You'll love him as Matthew Crawley, a lawyer who all of a sudden is next in line to inherit everything, and has to navigate the aristocracy that is thrust upon him as well as one of the daughters he is expected to marry to keep the family inheritance intact. There are also some villains that you will love to hate but some will be redeemed as well. Hope this helps!

Hello All, Happy Weekend and a Blessed Easter to all who celebrate it.

(adding a blockquote to break up the text) The season before Easter (Lent) got me thinking about doing with less and giving more. I've been feeling how free-ing it is and how it's possible to be happy with less. I look around at stuff at home stacked up and filling cupboards, and I'm sure I don't need most of them.

This article by Elizabeth Millard brought it home to me. I like the suggestions in her "Try this" paragraphs. ?

https://experiencelife.com/article/the-art-of-enough/

The question now is, can I jettison 'too much' and be happily contented with 'just enough'? ?

Yay to the first open thread since the launching of the new site! Everything's been amazing - glitches and all. You guys always work hard to enhance the beanies site experience. 고생 많았어요!

What has everyone been watching since a few dramas ended its run? I've replaced Chief Kim with it's successor, Mystery Queen. I'm loving the Choi Kang Hee's quirkiness. Her character's chemistry with Kwon Sang Woo's is delightfully petty and hilarious. It's a nice touch with the drama giving her an awesome female bff as well. I'm also getting slightly Signal vibes with the indie OSTs and the appearance of 2 actors from the series (you know you're watching far too many kdramas when you start recognising the cameo/minor characters as well HAH).

I've caught up till the latest epi 4 where we finally get a glimpse of Seol-Ok's prosecutor husband! So much suspense. I really wonder why she gave up her own dreams to marry him. Was it the only way for her to survive or was it really love on her part at least. The drama hasn't made any mention of her parents yet unless I missed it. Seeing how Kyung-Mi mentioned that he couldn't have made it without Seol-Ok and also that Seol-Ok paid for her sister-in-law's grad school, I doubt Seol-Ok came from a poor background. AH, I can't wait for ALL the episodes.

I located an online English translation of the novel and read the first chapter. It's very entertaining. I think you'll like it. I love how the chapter titles collectively form poems. Enjoy!!!

Oh, and I also watched the first episode of the 2003 wuxia TV drama with subtitles. It's a little different from the book, but was easy to follow.

For DGSD, the 1997 TVB adaptation is best. The opening differs from the novel's, but is a good change - starting with Qiao Feng is always better than with Duan Yu, ha.

Greetings, Junny! Lovely to see you here. ;-)

Thanks for that hot tip re: 1997 "Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils"!

By any chance would you happen to know where I could watch the 2006 33-episode Chinese version of BICHEONMU / DANCE IN THE SKY ( aka 飞天舞 (飛天舞) / Fei Tian Wu / FLYING HEAVENLY DANCE)?

The 2008 Korean version had only 14 episodes. I've read that the longer version makes more sense because so much was chopped out of the Korean production. Even so, I enjoyed the SBS version. The music was lovely. I would like to see it uncut, even if it means having to hear it dubbed into English. There goes Joo Jin Mo's gorgeous voice.

Hi @PakalanaPikake :
I didn't even know there was a Chinese version (thought it was only a film), but I found this: http://v.sogou.com/series/wxt4vu5644qlpsom5thoq.html

The quality isn't great and I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, but I hope it's somewhat watchable. It's dubbed in Mandarin.

Hi, junny!

I stopped by again and was surprised to see that your first message had magically appeared. I've found that I sometimes have to refresh the page after posting. Yesterday a message that had a URL in it disappeared. I think the site went into stealth moderation mode, because after a while it finally appeared. Weird.

This is indeed the show I've been keeping my eyes open for. It threw me at first because it has 38 episodes instead of 33. Maybe there are duplicates? Who knows.

Thanks so very much for finding it for me. I've attempted to skim through the first and last few episodes, and it's the right one. I recognize some of the actors and scenes. My internet service seems to be flaky (it figures), so I can't watch at this time. Too many timeout errors.

Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it!

Aloha,
Pakalana

Hi @PakalanaPikake,
Seems my previous comment got eaten up by the system. If you go to sogou.com and input the Chinese title, you should be able to find the drama. It's not great quality, but I hope that's what you're looking for.

Thanks so much, Junny! I found the movie version, dubbed in German, which I can understand (but am rusty at). It's kind of surreal. I've already watched AMNOK RIVER FLOWS / DER YALU FLIEßT with English subtitles, so I know I can get by. ;-)

I hadn't been able to find the film either, so this is great! I'll keep poking around for the drama.

Again, many thanks! ;-)

I'm in love with Super Family 2017. This sitcom managed to take sad and painful living realities, told it in a humorous way that somehow hit all the right feels, and still left me feeling hopeful afterwards. It's great to watch a show that populated by ordinary people busy living their ordinary life. Also, Maeng Ra-yeon and Na Ik-hee fast becoming one of my favorite heroine in dramaland.

Happy easter guys! And Hello OT! God, it's been ages since I was here last... especially this early :P

How are you all?

Dramaland has had me n a slump lately, so I've mostly been rewatching stuff, and some chinese dramas and japanese movies. Real life has been... interesting.. lately, so I've really not had any energy to check out new stuff or keeping me updated.

I did watch Strong Woman Bong Soon. Stuff on ep 13 though. I donno, I liked the drama well enought but something about that episode just made me care less about watching the next episode. I must say, damn this drama is full of fillers in every episode. Makes me wih it was an 10 ep jdrama instead if it means they'd stick with the main storyline more.

Also started Tunnel this week after reading the recaps. REally liking this drama, and yay for two of my favorite actors beining in it. Such a missed meta opertunity though of having the music in the background be BTS and not VIXX (N's group) for when Kwang Ho first gets ready in the apartment.

And for those that remember kdrama toddlers will make a comback! ...once I can find my notes that is... xD

Wow, Manin, SWBDS 13 is exactly when I stopped caring, too. I know 14 got all lovey-dovey and swoony but 13 was like the last straw for story coherence (wayyyyy the last straw). You pushed me over the edge, Show! I'll finish it but the thrill is gone.

On to shows...my favourite kind ie mystery-cum-fantasy and with the possibility of romance (or vice versa). Mystery Queen - I was surprised that I like it quite a lot. Perhaps I had low expectations. I found Choi Kang Hee most suitable for her role and I like, of all things, her interactions with mum-in-law (Park Jun Keum once again but a nicer mum-in-law than she's been before). It certainly does not hurt that Lee Won Geun complete with eye-smile is the 'boss' of the police substation and 'crazy' Kwon Sang Woo has been demoted to work under him. 😁 The battle of wills that will emerge with the three of them will be a treat to watch!

Tunnel - I began this show to compare it with other supernatural, time-twisty shows like the current Chicago Typewriter, or Tomorrow With You (Seems that similar themed shows just have to get produced in spates,... never understood why). 😨 And it was yet another surprise to me that I liked it, although I find the trajectory between Sun Jae and Jae Yi rather contrived. The mystery each week is compelling and the cops are not dumb (such a relief) and the over-arching mystery of whom the serial killer is and whether Kwang Ho gets to go home holds it all together.

Chicago Typewriter - This is the show that I really like right now. It has a different feel and vibe from W although both shows have a mechanical/electronic device linking worlds or past lives and both have arrogant, compulsive creators (artist or writer). I'm really enjoying the cinematography, the transitions to the 1930s, the weird-quirkiness and the scary ghostliness, not to mention of course the strange interactions between Se Joo and Jeon Seol. It's just 2 episodes in, but already with Ko Gyung Pyo's character making his appearance, it feels like it'll just get more irresistably spooky and fun. 👍😆

And apparently Drinking Solo S2 will move time slot to Fri-Sat which usually time for prime drama in Tvn. Whooo! No news about the cast tho, but I heard Park Ha Sun hasn't got offer? Won't be joining? It's unclear.

Hello, all!

Loving this new site. My computer troubles with commenting have all gone. Have a blessed Passover and Easter to those who worship.

Dramas:
Still Loving you -- OMG! So good! The payoff for these six-month-long daily dramas can be sweet. FINALLY our villainness is getting her comeuppance! I had t smile when I realized that several of my fave young actors all come from ZE:A. Apparently the company that created that group have my taste in men. Anyways, I've discovered two great actors because of this great drama. Park Ha Na and Dong-Joon. This is one of the best daily I've ever seen.

Most of the dramas are so good now, lots of stories that feel mature for us ahjummas, and the kdrama cops have gotten better. Esp in Mystery Queen, Tunnel. But Mystery Queen is seriously mature adult writing.

The makjangs are good as well. Whisper is over-the-top but fun, even with all those convenient coincidences. Am not pleased that we probably have a romance coming up. But I'm not pleased with a lot of the romances coming up in Radiant Office and Mystery Queen either. Can't men an women work together and not fall in love?

Rebel is fun. I've never been interested in the mythic drama character Hong Gil Dong. Now I might watch the older version. The writers do a great job of depicting the devastating power of Confucianism in Joseon times. Heck, many of the dramas this season are subtly and powerfully shining a light on the Korean culture. Chief Kim did a great job of showing corporate greed culture.

Radiant Office is okay and it really is hard-hitting in how it shows what life is like for job-seekers in Korea. Very enlightening show. No mega-evil but the daily evils of working life. But for some reason it always leaves me feeling a bit unsettled because of some of its creative choices. But eh...kdrama tropes.

Chicago Typewriter seems like it'll be unpredictable. Good! Yoo Ah In never lets me down with his choices.

Loving Do Bong Soon. Very sweet romance. Good police force -- although a certain second lead keeps rushing off on his own.

I generally avoid C-dramas but Dr Qin, forensic medicine is great, if a bit gruesome. Perfect female lead. And Return of the Silver Tongue is silly fun. Good fun to keep my mind off people dropping bombs on other people. Pray for South Korea. Hell, pray for the world. Things are looking very scary. A blessed and safe weekend to all.

Not watching anything else. Should I be?

"There is a curse they say "may you live in interesting times!" - it's an old proverb, written into one of Terry Pratchett's books. I feel like it's the perfect description to how the world we live in is acting at the moment. Interesting times indeed...

Radiant office sounds like a drama I'm not going to see. I get enough tales about korean officelife from my friend to be able to enjoy a drama about it. I had the same way with Misaeng which is why I never finished the drama.
Rebel is one that I was so looking forward to though. Need to get onto watching it... once my head is in it more

Hii,
I am going through a crisis. I have a lot of eps unwatched for more than a week. The only show I am keeping up with is the perfect wife. I have suddenly lost interest in all others. Instead, I am obsessed with 2days 1night.
It all begin when I watched a Kang dong won film and there I saw many comments about how he and some Jung Joon-young look alike. Then I searched up his Happy together ep and it was sooooooooooo funny. then I followed him to 2Days 1Night. At first, I just watched eps randomly, but now I am binge watching from the beginning of season 3. The show is just brilliant, all the cast are perfect and funny. But Joon-young is on another level, he is weird, crazy, clever and cool.
Ah othokkeyo, my semester is ending I have to manage that as well. It is not the first time I am sucked in by a variety same. I binge watched Three Days a Meal also, but it had comparatively fewer eps.
I was so sad abt his scandal. It was really unfortunate and wrong. But I am glad that I got to know him after it is all resolved. I am Jung Joonyoung obsessed.

I thoroughly enjoy 2D1N too but for YSY! :) and of course Cha Taehyun, I like that he is well-respected and is successful after all these years. Through the show, I get the feeling that he is really just a very pleasant person to know and work with. Plus, because of him, Bogummie guested for 3 eps. Check it out if you haven't, especially the first one with Bogum because I found it really funny. :)

PS 3MAD was pretty great too especially with CJW who was just so comfortable with them. I lowkey ship her with Seojinnie

PPS I didn't know about Joonyoung's scandal. What happened? At any rate, I thought he was genuine in the show - in that he is witty and weird.

So, let's talk Bromance. I stumbled over a couple articles about Chief Kim and it confirmed a few things. First, the kiss on the cheek scene between Chief Kim and Yul was in fact an improve though it was the director's idea not Namgoong Min's. However, Min was alllll for it. The second thing is that he said in an interview he's not gunning for an acting award for it, he wants the best couple award with Junho. That is so awesome. That had such a great bromance!

Happy Friday! Happy Easter! I love new DB, and enjoy reading all new pic and video posts of beanies- that means less time for other things. btw more casts from 'Chief Kim' had interviews.

Dong-ha who played Chaebul Park Myung-suk had an interview[OSEN]. He was one of my favorite characters in the show.

His phone conversation in Tanzanian acting drew hot reaction and took the 1st spot on search word on-line at the time. "When I first heard it, I thought they were lying. I said "Please don't joke". Actually that was 100% ad-lib. Writer-nim wrote it in English and situation was me talking in African style English. I thought I should use Tanzanian language since it was conversation with a local person, so I got the permission from director-nim and searched the sentences fitting to the situation in Youtube and practiced it."

Dong-ha said such ad-lib was possible because of care-free set atmosphere. It turned out that some of shooting team were staffs from KBS's 'Beautiful Mind'(Jang Hyuk) where he was in. PD Lee Jae-hoon was assistant PD in BM too. "Director-nim and Staffs of Team A were the people I worked with in 'Beautiful Mind', so atmosphere was comfortable. Drama itself having comedic sides helped too. All casts in the accounting department went crazy with ad-lib. There was no your line, my line. The person who did (ad-lib) better got the lines. You can say 85% scripts 15% ad-lib."
But not all was easy for him. At the beginning Dong-ha who played a rude rich boy had many scenes tormenting sunbaes. "At first meeting we(Dong-ha and Kim Wan-hae who played Manager Chu) filmed the scene where I had to kick sunbae-nim's shank. Sunbae-nim saw me worrying and said "Just kick passionately and finish with first shot." We did rehearsal about 20 times and succeeded at first try. I totally felt relieved."

Dong-ha thanked NamGoong Min for his leads. "Sunbae-nim really led well. He had much more experience than me and answered kindly whenever I asked. Actually there are times you feel difficult when you (as hoobae/junior) ask a sunbae questions. When I tell him about ad-lib or action, he said ok as long as it didn't go over the situation. And he asked "How about doing this way" rather than "Do this way". Our team-work was great and since he led well, picture we drew could shine better. I am really grateful."
Dong-ha seemed to have understanding about his character. "I felt that Myung-suk was a child who was innocent inside, wanting to get attention, rather than being evil. Kim Sung-ryong understood and led that well. Usually when a villain says lines it gives heavy and scary feeling, but Myung-suk didn't give such feeling, even though he was rude. I think he was just lost between good and bad, but had innocence."

People gave him a friendly nickname 'Mungsuk-yi' for his character. There was also feedback like his rude but affectionate way of talking was charming. Dong-ha said he never expected. "I was...

continued-
"I was afraid before I started the project. Because the character was rude and had no sense, I thought I would get cursed. I didn't even read comments in the beginning. But reaction was good, so I was stunned. I am so thankful. I thought "Even this kind of character can receive love." I am happy reading comments these days."

He is actually a veteran actor with almost 10 years of experience. He debuted with the drama 'Accidental Couple' in 2008 and did Three Days, Feel Good Day, Last, Glamorous Temptation, Beautiful Mind as well as a few movies and plays since then. He said he fell into the charm of acting when he was watching the movie 'Arahan' (Ryoo Seung-bum) in 2012 when he was first year middle school student. "I became to have interests [in acting] with some simple reason when I was young. I was watching a movie in a theater, and Ryoo Seung-bum sunbae-nim did some great action. I looked around and everyone(audience) had same expression as me. I thought "I want to do this too." I had desire like "I wish people laugh and cry when I act." So I decided to become an actor. My parents have high expectation on education, so they were against my decision harshly. I couldn't get approval until I passed 20. I worked part time to earn tuitions to prepare to go to an art high school. But I failed because my kidneys got torn 2 weeks before the exam. I didn't give up though. Once I passed 20, my parents began to understand. Around the time 'Chief Kim' was finished, they completely approved my career choice. When the final episode of CK was aired, my mother cried a lot. I thought "This is the beginning." feeling emotional.

Dong-ha said he never felt hardships about acting. "When did I have the hardest time? I've never had. Of course there was period I had difficulties physically because I was hungry (financial difficulties). But I was always happy doing acting. There was never a time I felt suffering doing acting. I assume most of actors feel the same way, but since I am an actor, I'd like to hear "Dong ha is a person who can act well." I want to hear it at least once before I die. To achieve that I have to keep trying with humble attitude."

His next project is SBS's new drama "Suspicious Partner". He plays Hyun-soo, a client for Jiwook (Ji Chang-wook) and Bonghi (Nam Ji-hyun). "I filmed every scene preciously in 'Chief Kim'. I am so grateful people watched me positively. The role I took in SP is an innocent character even just by looks. It offers complete different feeling from Myung-suk character in CK. I only have early parts of scripts and have to do more research, but I will work hard and show new image, so please watch me kindly."

Hello beanies! Isn't the new website layout great? It makes me get out of lurker mode. :D

I finished Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms aka Eternal Love Last weekend. I'd read hamster's translation of the novel back in the day so I knew the story but I binged the drama in a couple of sittings. Couldn't tear my eyes away. Mark Chao's performance added so many dimensions to Ye Hua that I didn't find in the novel. Ye Hua came across as kind of arrogant in the novel but Mark Chao made him boyish and adorable and uncertain. He softened Ye Hua's hard edges just through his expressions.

Initially I thought that the drama opening chronologically rather than from the point where Su Su jumps would reduce the dramatic impact but now I'm glad they did. Knowing the history between the characters and the buildup added to each scene rather than taking away from it. Specially since we, as the audience, knew more than the characters and could interpret the layers the actors coughcoughMarkChaochough so generously provided in their performance. Count me in line for Ye Hua fangirling.

I also loved Bai Qian to bits. Girl doesn't take crap from anyone yet is hilariously awkward in social situations. She was flawed and real. Hilariously clueless about love but not ditsy. Also, I liked the way her approach to parenting was played out. That's how faeries are; a bit careless, a bit cruel, not overly concerned with everyday things (like eating nutritious food!). Or at least the faeries I've encountered in Holly Black and Melissa Marr's books. ;)

Now that the show has ended, I'm left with a hole in my life. I'm looking forward to the film adaptation's release but that's months away! Watching Love O2O in the meantime. I like it but a lot of the filler stuff in the early episodes could have been done away with. I found the side characters annoying. Particularly their obsession with beauty and slut shaming. Fucking shallow. I'm on episode 19 and Wei Wei's supervisor at work A Huang? is being ridiculously sexist. I wish everyone would stop indulging him as if it's Wei Wei's responsibility to prove women can be competent. His ridiculous behaviour (really he jumps 12 feet away whenenver Wei Wei approaches him as if she's carrying something contagious) is played up for laughs cause everyone can see he's being ridiculous but come on. Also, all of that subtext about how Wei Wei is not like other girls. Come on, you can have great female characters without putting down other women. I'm not taking this stuff too seriously but it definitely lowers my enjoyment of the drama.

Ahhh!!! Another Three Lives Three World, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms fans! I initially didn't warm up to any of the characters and find Siyin's relationship with her teacher kind of icky, I didn't know they weren't the main OTP, but another beanie here convinced me to give it another go. Boy, I'm glad I did. Mark Chao was amazing! He was so charismatic, mysterious, slightly proud, but romantic at heart. I love to bits how Mark Chao played Yehua with all his strengths and flaws.

But! Yes, but...it wasn't the main OTP that kept me watching, of course watching them was a plus, but I was more into Donghua and Fengjiu's storyline. Some feel like their love was overrated and that Donghua was too stiff and Fengjiu too annoying, but I really love the pair. I love how Fengjiu's innocent persistence to repay his kindness turn from crush and developed into love, and even when Donghua resisted, he couldn't help falling for her and tried to protect her in many instances, like when she turned into fox and he cared for her knowing it was Fengjiu, and how he took a beating from the monster because he couldn't use his power without hurting Fengjiu's tail, I could go on and on. As soon as I finished the drama, I went to look for the Pillow Book, which chronicled their story. Granted the novel feels much, much better version of their story, but since they were adapting the other book, I can't really complain, I just wish they do better characterizations of Fengjiu and Donghua, they were so good in the novels, they fell short in the drama. I still adore them though. Fengjiu x Donghua is my OTP!
