Prince and pauper trade identities in Ruler–Master of the Mask

A prince and a pauper who share the same name, love the same girl, and share one identity as the crown prince behind a mask—what could possibly go wrong? The newest teaser for MBC’s spring historical melodrama Ruler–Master of the Mask highlights the relationship between Yoo Seung-ho (Remember–Son’s War), the prince forced to hide his face behind a mask, and L (She’s So Lovable) as the commoner who becomes the prince’s stand-in. It has all the makings of a bromance gone wrong, which sort of makes me want it to go epically wrong, if that’s the road we’re headed down. Angst is no good in half-doses!

Yoo Seung-ho stars as a lonely crown prince who wants to change the country and become a true leader, and he fights against a secret organization led by Heo Joon-ho (Beautiful Mind) that wants to privatize the nation’s water supply. L plays the son of a butcher, a brilliant young man hampered by his lowborn status. He loves the heroine, played by Kim So-hyun (Bring It On, Ghost), and happens to have the same name as the prince (yeah that’s not going to be confusing or anything). The prince will save the butcher’s son from ruining his life for revenge, and their fates will be inextricably linked when L dons the prince’s mask to be his stand-in.

The first video below is just a short character teaser for Yoo Seung-ho. The copy reads: “The crown prince underneath the mask becomes the true ruler.” The newest teaser begins with Heo Joon-ho’s character demanding for the prince to be brought before him, and Yoo Seung-ho confronts him wearing his mask. The copy reads: “I dream of becoming a true ruler, not a scarecrow.” As assassins come by the horde and the prince is brought to his knees, he asks the butcher’s son to take his place. Next thing we know, L is in the prince’s robes, and Yoo Seung-ho is dressed as a eunuch, fighting with his sword.

Afterwards, they switch clothes back to their rightful positions, and the prince says in voiceover, “You are me.” But then the teaser ends with L’s voiceover, as we flash from a shot of the real prince to the fake one: “I am the crown prince of Joseon, Lee Sun.” Dun dun dun! Are you just getting into character, or are you reluctant to let go once you’ve had a taste of true power?

Ruler–Master of the Mask follows Radiant Office on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning May 10.

This is one drama where I really wouldn't care for a bromance. There's so much politics that could be exploited and an epic love story to be told so I have bigger priorities lol. I do love the idea of the Crown Prince doing all the good deeds secretly for his people though. That's already an interesting story in itself!

I'm curious about Yoon So-hee's character. We haven't seen much of her at all. But I suppose this is also the first concrete thing we've seen of L so she's probably next.

I've watched the video greet of yoo seung ho & kim myung soo (the one where they are both wearing king's robe) and it is where I noticed their similarities (height, built, facial features) now I understand why it has to be L.

They kind of really look alike especially when they smile, tho one's face is more expressive. The big difference is their voice, L voice is soft and light while ysh's is deep/husky, dark and rich. A tenor and baritone or baritenor?

I am excited for this, but mostly Kim So Hyun, she is a Korean national treasure and frankly she outclasses L as an actor and surpasses Yoo Seung Ho as an actor. I hope its good.

I have no idea who L is and I found YSH quite meh(sorry to fans!).
Kim So Hyun was mesmerizing in Goblin. All three look good in these teasers though. Looks like I'm going to stay on MBC for a while.

Indeed, kim so hyun is a gem. At a young age, she already is a brilliant actress. Yoo Seung Ho's acting caliber is not that way too far from KSH tho. He is considered one of the top actors of his generation. I couldn't ask for more. This pairing is way way better than her previous projects'

Oooh I can see the similarity (height, built, facial features) when L and Yoo Seung-ho are dressed up and placed side-by-side in that shot. Good casting! I hope acting skills wise, they are also balanced enough so no one actor needs to completely carry the show. (And of the two, I am most concerned about L). The last show I saw L in was a few years ago in Shut Up! Flower Boy Band, where he was still super green and kinda overacted his angst. He has a much larger role to play here so I'm crossing my fingers that his acting has improved since then!

YSH really chooses his drama well --- he can play victim, villain, hearthrob, and every year he comes back maturely and strong from movies to dramaland.

Now seeing Yoo Seung and L side by side, for the first time I thought the casting made sense because they looked quite similar. I always thought that L is taller and has a bigger body built than Yoo Seung Ho though but I guess that isn't much of the case now.
It's interesting to see this bromance go all wrong and L turns into an antagonist. How will Yoo Seung Ho (I mean Lee Seon prince ofc) would feel to see his buddy betray him for power and the woman he himself love?
Can't wait to watch this drama out, feel this has huge potential, please don't mess up!

Its look like a recipe for disaster-bromance. Heck can we even call it bromance?

On the other note, if L gonna act as pseudo-LeeSun and real-LeeSun gonna pretend he is not the crown prince meaning, KSH gonna hate the L-LeeSun not YSH-LeeSun? And maybe, maybe we'll have a longer fluff between YSH and KSH. Well before she learned that YSH is real LeeSun.

Just give me the angst one at a time please drama? My poor heart cannot take both angst from romance and bromance.

Ahh. This drama sound like it gonna be full of angst! ??

PLEASE drama gods for the love of all that is holy, let L's acting chops shine through this time around... I've loved L since his idol debut but I cannot watch him act without cringing a little. PLEASE!!

Can't help but worry about L's acting. His co-star is YSH for crying out loud, his acting inadequacies would be magnified ten-fold. Can't help but wish YSH has a better co-star, Yeo Jin Goo for instance.
