’90s idols and accidental kisses in KBS’s The Best Hit
Hold up. I think I’m gonna have to reevaluate this drama. So, previous articles described The Best Hit as a youth drama depicting the lives and struggles of a group of twentysomethings as they deal with their careers and relationships. In the brand-new teaser out for the upcoming KBS drama, there’s definitely a lot of hijinks involved, but some of them are completely unexpected.
We start with foreboding lightning and Yoon Shi-yoon’s (Mirror of the Witch) idol fandom paraphernalia strewn about and covered in dust. As a news anchor narrates that the popular idol has disappeared, we see him sitting in the middle of the road with a car coming at him before the screen blacks out. Wait, I’m getting the feeling that he’s a ’90s idol who travels to the present. This would explain SO MUCH about my earlier confusion regarding the promo material, ‘cause Yoon Shi-yoon’s outfits and hair were so anachronistic. I mean, he’s wearing a bandana around his head, with gold chains and the baggiest jeans there ever were. This all screeammms ’90s.
He somehow ends up in a hospital, and he sneaks out with a rather clumsy disguise behind a grandma in a wheelchair. He indignantly tells someone offscreen, “I’m not usually someone who lives and acts so cheaply!” HAH, his dance moves in front of the mirror are hilarious. He somehow gets to know Lee Se-young (Laurel Tree Tailors), a civil service hopeful who’s failed the exam three years in a row, who drily remarks, “You’re just a beggar.” Except, she doesn’t look like one to talk, since she picks up a boiled egg from the floor and pops it in her mouth. Five second rule, I guess?
We also get a first look at Kim Min-jae’s (The Lonely Shining Goblin) character, a high-achieving student who is secretly an idol trainee. He works his dance moves in a club — by himself, mind you — intercut with a scene of him asking someone whether he’s not attractive. I was just about to awww, until he stops his routine on the dance floor, and for some godforsaken reason, his outstretched hands are both resting on the… uh… chest area of two ladies. Smooth, dude.
Cha Tae-hyun (The Producers) and Yoon Son-ha (Six Flying Dragons) also make an appearance as Kim Min-jae’s parents (sorta). Kim Min-jae’s whole family dynamic is strange, and the photographer (cameo by Go Chang-seok) is channeling my inner confusion as he tries to take a family picture. Lee Deok-hwa (Suspicious Partner) starts it all off saying, “She (Yoon Son-ha) isn’t my daughter.” Yoon Son-ha of Cha Tae-hyun: “We aren’t married.” But then they all confirm Kim Min-jae is their son. Lol, whut.
Lee Se-young also gives off the wrong impression when she wears a police uniform, but then clarifies that, “I may be wearing the uniform, but I’m not police.” She looks like she gets into a tussle with her giraffe boyfriend (cameo by Lee Kwang-soo). A bandana’ed Yoon Shi-yoon looks bewildered at his surroundings, asking whether this is really Seoul, and jumps at the sight of a drone. Oh man, I’m going to enjoy his ’90s idol mentality getting used to 2017 Korea. Also, I don’t know how the main loveline goes, but Yoon Shi-yoon lands an accidental smooth on Lee Se-young as he tries to help with her seatbelt, ending up in a lip-lock. Oh dear, are you going to make me choose between Kim Min-jae and Yoon Shi-yoon, show? If so, they should at least have a dance-off, pleaseandthankyou.
Whew, they definitely packed a lot into a 30-second teaser. I do hope the tone of the actual show is a lot less frenzied, but this looks fun, and if the show had been promoted earlier as a time-traveling one involving an old-school idol coming to the present, I would have been MUCH more interested from the get-go. He’s wearing plaid AND stripes, and his hair has so much gel! It’s like the ultimate throwback to ’90s glory. I love it.
