Book & OST giveaway: I Believe in a Thing Called Love

We’ve got a fun new giveaway for you from the author of upcoming YA novel I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which is about a drama-lover who employs romance tricks and tropes from her favorite K-dramas in an effort to jumpstart her love life (I’m sure we’ve all seen enough dramas to imagine how well that goes over). For a chance to win a signed copy of the book and a drama OST, enter below!

Here’s a message from author Maurene Goo:

Hi, everyone! You might remember that a few months ago javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to interview me about my upcoming YA novel, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Since the book is about a girl trying to snag a guy using the “steps” she finds in K-dramas, well, sharing this book with Dramabeans readers was a no-brainer. Not only that, javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to consult and brainstorm with me so that I could make sure the K-drama facts were right and they helped me create the K-drama starter guide in the back of the book, as well.

And in the years that I took to write this book, I’ve learned about the incredible fandom through this website, and have become a newbie fan myself (I’ve watched K-dramas since forever but am a total lightweight when it comes to K-drama knowledge, and I’m in awe of all of you!). Basically, I’m incredibly grateful that Dramabeans exists.

So, in celebration of my book coming out this month on May 30, I’m offering a giveaway to Dramabeans readers! There will be two winners selected—both will win signed copies of my book, plus either the Healer or Goblin original soundtracks (two of my favorites!).

To enter, just answer this prompt in your comment below: Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!

And if you want a copy of my book for yourself, giveaway be damned, you can pre-order through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Contest Rules:

  • Leave a comment below telling us about your favorite drama love triangle.
  • Post as many comment entries as you want, through Sunday, May 14, at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time. (Here’s a handy-dandy time zone converter, so you can figure out what that is in your local time.)
  • We will email winners directly.

Hmm, a favourite drama love triangle?? Can't really think of one...
...
...
Ah, Jealousy Incarnate! That's first drama that came into my mind after thinking for few seconds.
Why? Oh, I was so on for polyamory between the three, since the female lead couldn't choose between the two men. And well, everyone knows whom she ended up with. At the same time, it was amusing. And of course, not to forget the supporting characters, that ahjusshi with two women (kekeke). (Am lazy to remember their characters' names or search up, whoops.) Love is really everywhere in this show, Jealousy Incarnate, that's if you minus da jealousy.

Reply 1988 - Duk-sun, Jung-Hwan, and Taek are still my favorite love triangle characters. I love that no cheesy tropes were involved - just entirely relatable emotions that are so intricately tied to life's growing pains.

Their love triangle was so frustrating to me! I loved them, but I made the mistake of thinking Jung Hwan was end game... Your comment was spot on as to why it was so awesome, since the show was so very true to life, I felt all the pain and excitement of their moments together ^_^

What a nice offer! I think one of my favorite love triangles was the one in an older drama - "Shining Inheritance" (aka "Brilliant Legacy") - between Han Hyo-joo as the female lead and Lee Seung-gi and Bae Soo-bin as her two pretenders. Obviously Lee Seung-gi was going to win her heart, but Bae Soo-bin was just so decent and deserving too that he was such a poignant second-lead that in spite of enjoying the growth of LSG and his connection with HHJ, I felt really bad that Bae Soo-bin lost out. This was one of the perfect Cinderella-style dramas; yes, it's a predictable storyline, but the characters and the script and the acting raised it up above the level of standard fare.

Personally, for me it was Sunkyunkwan Scandal; the love triangle between Pricky-yet-Righteous "Wang Sahbang", Way-Ahead-Of-Her-Time "Yoon Hee a la Daemul" and Hapless Geol Oh (though poor boy never stood a chance!) was one of the most drama free but cute ones ever.

This drama still gives me nightmares. Geol Oh and his hiccups were more deserving of Daemul than Wang Sahbang. I never could bring myself to like his character or watch any of Yoo chun's future dramas because of my long standing grudge.

Though, in my heart of hearts I know that my darling Geol Oh and Yeo Rim are the one couple I should have been rooting for.

My favorite love triangle is probably the one from Another Oh Hae Young between the two Oh Hae Youngs and Eric's character Park Do Kyung. It was interesting because in this case the two women had a history and along with sharing the exact same name and being compared all the time they both fell in love with the same man at different points. Neither Hae Young was a "bad" person and their struggles were easy to relate to for me. I've been in the situation where I too have a very common name and along with another person who had the same name as me got in a fight over a guy. After that experience, I have a theory that you can't be friends with someone with the same name as you :P

The girl I shared the same name with was way prettier than me and once I was so sure that a guy liked me, and everybody knows about it...but he actually liked the other girl and then everyone gave me that awkward look. I hate that awkward look so, so much.

That cover looks pretty. I don't like love triangles in general, but if we're talking about hurting for the second lead while still loving the first lead, it has to be 1988. Crazy one: What happened in Bali. Cute and went to nowhere one: My Love Patzzi.

What Happenned in Bali is one of the most twist and crazy love triangle and definitely most intriguing. You don't even know where the female lead heart goes till the last minute, you doesn't even know why they are doing what they do. One minute he goes to So Ji Sub,and all of sudden she seems missing Jo In Sung so much and goes to him even when she is in the middle of So Ji Sub's arm LMAO. Man I will never forget that roller coaster. Just because It's crazy, Doesn't mean it's a bad drama, It's one a good one. Depict like Que Sera Sera like, but a more crazy one

I have to go with Coffee Prince. It was my first drama so I have a special place in my heart for but I also loved those characters so much.

Eun-chan is one of my all-time favourite characters so I went back and forth a lot as to who she should be with. Han-sung was really accepting of her right away, and I loved their scenes together because he looked at her with such warmth and obvious affection that I couldn't help but like the two of them together.
Han-kyul however had such an odd relationship with her, but the chemistry was so strong and the spark between them really jumped off of the screen. They became my preferred pairing when he confessed to loving her even if she was a boy.
Their affection for this slightly odd, lovable girl really touched me. Eun-chan deserved her happy ending and I am glad she got it.

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds

Because each lead had their own triangle.
Hong Ra On - Crown Lee Prince Yeong - Jo Ha Yeon
Crown Prince Lee Yeong - Ra On - Kim Yoon-Sung

But even though the love between Ra On and Crown Prince Yeong was undeniable ("He is my person!", "but I’m going to try… that wicked love"), the love from the other halves of the triangle was beautiful and true as well. And they both recognised the steadfast unshakeable love of the leads and made sacrifices in order to ensure the happiness of the one they loved.

Ha Yeon gave up her place as Queen and her reputation.
Yoon Sung made the ultimate sacrifice and died in order to protect Ra On. *tears! that badass fighting scene!*

No nasty second leads, just true love from all sides of the triangles. That's why it's my favourite. ❤️

After having discussed this with some people, I realise that this probably doesn't count as a proper triangle since the OTP love was so strong.

And I realise I actually hate proper love triangles- I like them weak (like above) or non existent (like in DOTS or Goblin). Lol. So... I think I just disqualified myself. Haha.

But go and watch Moonlight Drawn By Clouds if you haven't! Won't regret it I promise!

But really to each his own. I'm cool with people having differing tastes and points of view, watching different types of kdramas. Too boring if everyone liked the same stuff.

Favorite drama love triangle? Ya know, I know this shouldn't be hard at all, but surprisingly there are quite a few love triangles I've enjoyed, haha!

While I really want to pick Jealousy Incarnate for its bizarre, hilarious and heartfelt take on the trope, I've decided to pick a lesser known love triangle -- a trio of characters that truly went on to become the OT3 of dreams! Oh Ji-eun, Hyun-woo, and Lee Sang-yeob in I Live in Cheongdamdong were just so delightful. It was pretty much clear that Ji-eun and Hyun-woo were meant to be, but I absolutely loved whenever Sang-yeob would enter the equation because he had such great chemistry with both of them. I see why the writer-PD team sought him out again for This Week My Wife Had an Affair. These three had the most hilarious and heartwarming antics with each other. I love them to bits.

Honorable mention for Healer vs. Park Bong-soo (aka himself)!

Reply 1997 had also an amazing love triangle in Sung Shiwon - Yoon Yoonjae - Kang Joonhee (we knew where it was heading, but I so much felt Joonhee's silent adoration of his best friend and his inner freakout everytime Yoonjae was being handsy).

And of course: Sungkyungwan scandal : Deamul - Geol-oh - Gu Young Ha. Because Gu Young Ha's dedication to his best buddy was as constant, intense and rooted in deep sincere feelings as was Geol-oh's dedication to Deamul (who prefered the nerd scholar to the badass smartass in black... but whyyyy ???? okay, I still remember why, but I still feel their pain, to both boys).

In both of them, there is a hidden (but oh so obvious to us)/ forbidden love (for the time or simply for the social expectations) that we know will never be fulfilled - but this fact makes it all the more sincere, beautiful, and selfess, and probably an everylasting love in a form a another, and (to us viewers) it remains painfully yet gleefully memorable.

Jealousy Incarnate all the way because the character were soo rich and fun sharing a deep bond yet didn't prevent them from acting petty yet still sharing the truths between the two man,HwaShin and JoongWon, while trying to get the heroine's(Pyo Na Ri) heart...Because the love triangle never felt this real and almost palpable as she was trully swayed by both guys, dated them both at the same time, that she even proposed to live together for a time limit to see who she likes more while having the real intention to leave them both as not to destroy the guys friendship...
If that's not the epitone of a love triangle i don't know what is jajja!

Reply 1988. Jung Hwan – Duk Seon – Taek; a triangle I have a love-hate relationship with.

This love triangle is my most memorable one and one that I will never ever forget. The reason is this is the very first time I got the second lead syndrome! And I got it so bad it completely broke me – so much that my heart still aches as I write about this.

The thing about this drama (and others in the Reply series) is that you get so invested in each and every character. Every character is very human and relatable and has a beautiful growth arch that you get so attached to them.

I loved Jung Hwan as a person (so very much) and loved even more how he secretly looked out for Duk Seon. In my SLS filled heart he is a perfect match for Duk Seon. But at the same time I admire Taek for taking that step (Min Hyuk wisdom ;) ) and making it count. It matters – that step really matters (yes this is me trying to convince myself that Taek does really deserve her). I loved that Jung Hwan realized his mistake and decided to move on without fretting around and gave Taek the space he needed. That’s the most beautiful thing about this triangle – that there was no rivalry. There was only friendship and both Taek and Jung Hwan held back because of their friendship. Neither one of them tried to be a jerk. In the end you could even say that friendship won the shipping battle!

For me personally, this was kind of an eye opener as well. Until Reply 1988 happened I really couldn’t understand why people got hysteric over second leads – I always thought second leads are less worthy. But now I understand that sometimes you connect with certain characters and you can’t really help it. And particularly when a drama has well-written characters even second leads shine pretty brightly. So now I try to be very understanding and sympathetic of second lead characters and not disregard their worth like I used to. I’m glad that there’s a Jung Hwan shaped hole in my heart reminding me that second leads matter too! :D

Now. Let me go to a corner and cry all over again over my broken heart T_T

Although Healer is one of my favorite drama (and it actually got me out of the shadows, though I still prefer lurking ^^), I didn't feel the angst of the love triangle as much as in another drama, because deep down I knew that in the end, she would get both guys (and what luck she has !).
I think that for me, the most painful one was the love triangle from My Girl. I haven't watched it for years (actually, maybe since 6 or 7 years), but I still remember the pain I was in because I was clearly in love with Lee Jun Ki's character, and he was so sweet to the heroine, but on the other end, she was perfect with Lee Dong Wook's character. Too hard to choose. Maybe this is why I am still scared to watch it again : because I know I will be torn between both guys, and the way they look at Lee Da Hae's character. Sigh.

One of the most memorable love triangles with me is Deoksun-Choi Taek-Junghwan in Reply 1988. I really cried over Ryu Junyeol's portrayal of unrequited love. Arrgh, that fake confession always makes my heart hurt! What I really love about this triangle is that the second lead was able to accept that he's just not the one for his love. Although it was a painful decision for him not to pursue his love for Deoksun anymore, he just chose to be happy for her. And I think that's what true love is- choosing to be happy for someone even if you're not part of that happiness.

I'm probably just saying this because I recently finished the drama, but I'm gonna have to pick Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. There were a bunch of things that I didn't like about the love triangle but the fact that the drama didn't just forget about Gook Du after the main couple got together really won me over. I absolutely loved the scene when he's playing basketball with Bong Gi and gets to work through his feelings. "I didn't know she liked me. Because I liked her too...So I didn't know."

Oh maaaaaan that tugged on the ole heartstrings.

I find most love triangles exhausting, there are very few I really really like, meaning I like all the characters involved.

My favorite will always be Healer -- where Ji Chang Wook is competing with himself, that is just absolutely hilarious and total win-win in the scope of things.

But for the sake of this giveaway, I think I'll have to say Oh My Ghostess! It's fascinating to see Jo Jung Suk fall in love with Park Bo Gum -- when she's actually possessed by Kim Seul Gi. There is tremendous character growth for the three people involved and it hurts because Seul Gi's ghost starts to fall in love but we all know it can never work out.

My honorable mention goes to Kill Me, Heal Me. Another case, this time Ji Sung, of the male lead competing with himself. Hmm, I guess I just really like love triangles where the girl falls in love with both/all sides of the man who loves her.

Thanks for hosting the giveaway! I would absolutely love to read I Believe In a Thing Called Love. And the Healer and Goblin soundtracks are some of my favorites!

Though Choong-nam probably never stood a chance, I ached for her just as much and would've also been fine if Seung-jae went for her. The way Choong-nam decided to choose friendship (to Hee-ja) over her love for Seung-jae was both poignant and bittersweet. ^__^

I loved our Healer OTP always all the way forever. ALDNAODBALND Everything about them was subtle, heart-felt, and calm. They weren't zany or anything and they may not garner up a lot of tension but they were perfect just the way they were. They never let outside forces drive them apart and they continue forward for their happiness. This is my ultimate Kdrama couple.

On a side note I am so excited for the book to come out. I've been waiting a while for it.

Reply 1997. Recalling from memory, so may not be entirely accurate. To a large degree for the scene right after Tae-Woong found out Yoon-Je was in love with Shi-Won too. Tae-Woong told Yoon-Je that they would both fairly pursue Shi-Won. Whatever the outcome there would be that no hard feelings. Not only did this show that Tae-Wong loved Shi-Won enough not to give up easily AND loved Yoon-Je enough not to just be selfish and tell him he should back off. This answer also displayed that you don't treat a person like an object. Shi-Won is a person not mine or yours.

And then the something extra that made me cry. After this discussion Tae-Woong changed things so the Shi-won would be at the meeting with Yoon-Je instead of the blind date he wanted Yoon-Je to go on before he knew Yoon-Je was in love with Shi-Won. I felt all the feelings about how Tae-Woong loved people in this moment. Because after what he said before about the way they were going to go forward with their relationships with each other and Shi-Won, the conceding of that one meeting also showed how much Tae-woong loved his brother.

Definitely Jealousy Incarnate - it's the only love triangle that had a purpose other than to incite jealousy (despite the show's name) - it really helped Na Ri realize who she loved more, and gave us so many incredible emotional beats with both guys, plus plenty of humor

I can't think of a love triangle that caused me much grief in my tens of years watching dramas, mostly because I'm a firm believer of the OTP, or when I root second lead (very rarely), I completely disregard the main lead.

I did, however, feel torn over Oh Ri-jin/Cha Do-hyun/Shin Se-gi pairing in Kill Me Heal Me. I know Shin Se-gi is only a split personality and ultimately belonged to the same man, Cha Do-hyun, but I felt so strongly for him and Cha Do-hyun.

Shin Se-gi loved and protected fiercely, it's not something uncommon in dramaland, but I felt compelled to root for him because he tried to be brave for everyone's sake and ended up hurting himself the most. I cried a lot when he chose to disappear/go dormant for Ri-jin and Do-hyun's sake. He is such a headstrong persona yet he was willing to step back for the woman he loves, I admired that about him.

Cha Do-hyun, on the other hand, may seem like a weak character, but his growth in the drama was not an easy feat. I loved how he was initially such a cowardly person, refused to get close to anyone for fear of hurting them with his split personality, ended up falling for the one person he shouldn't but braced himself for it. It was his jealousy toward his other personality, Shin Se-gi, that made him realized he wanted to treasure Ri-jin. I think I cried with Do-hyun the most because I felt for him even when his other 6 personalities jumped out to replace him. It's sad that he had no control of the other personalities and he blamed himself so much for it. My best moment of Do-hyun was when he cried over his breakup with Ri-jin, calling it "pain like losing my country." Awww!

Ri-jin is the one I adore the most. She embraced all of Do-hyun's personalities and loved them unconditionally. She even cried when she had to say goodbye to every one of them. Even when Cha Do-hyun turned out to be the root of all her past pain, she worried about him over herself and was thankful enough that she had her family's love. I feel so good that this woman is the one both men loved because she deserved them and they deserved her.

I chose the same "triangle"b without reading what anyone had written, but I could not express their nature so thoroughly. well put. In the beginning I thought Shin Se Gi was a psycho and a very dangerous guy, but they opened his soul as a vulnerable and desperate to be recognized as a someone. Ri Jin had her own relationship with both of them and Ji Sung played both so well I just forgot they werent actually different men!

Do we explain it as well?

Mostly, because these three were in love with each other...may be as friends or in a romantic way...each of three was so ready to be a noble ( I don't want to call them) 'idiot'. Worst case of the second lead syndrome for Hoya, to levels, may be only Jung Hwan from 1988 could match.

There is so many to choose from but I'll pick my favorite drama that I have seen in the recent years. The love triangle from Reply 1988: Duk-sun, Jung-Hwan, and Taek.

My favorite drama love triangle is from Night After Night/When it's at Night (Kim Sun-Ah and Lee Dong- Gun). Lee Joo-Hyun plays the second male lead - he's definitely second lead worthy, but, for me I would say that the love triangle is between Kim Sun-Ah, Lee Dong-Gun and her work. She is constantly trying to be this stellar agent for the Cultural Heritage Administration, because she is trying to live down the fact that her father is a tomb raider. Lee Dong-Gun is a conservator and art expert who doesn't have the cleanest hands in the business. Through a number of events she finds herself attracted to the shady character, but her love of her work has her resisting his advances and clinging to the safe embrace of her work.

I'm not usually a fan of love triangles, but my favorite kdrama would be City Hunter, but between Jin-Pyo, Na-Na, and Yoon-Sung. The tension between NaNa and JinPyo was phenomenal.
For non k-drama, the Thai version of Itazura na Kiss, Kiss Me. Unlike the other versions, I wasn't totally sure she wouldn't go for the second lead after all, (the hero was also unsure) and it didn't upset me.

When it comes to love triangles - the one I thought about right away was from Can You Hear My Heart between Cha Dong-joo, Bong Woo-ri, and Bong Ma-roo. It may be a little messy with Woo-ri and Ma-roo being step-siblings and later Ma-roo becoming Dong-joo's adoptive brother (under another identity) - but I totally loved it! There was romance and bromance!

My favorite would have to be "Cheese in the Trap". I was rooting for Baek In Ho thwwhole time. Both the male leads were quite strong in this drama, which made it a more interesting love triangle. The female lead's choice wasn't AS obvious as most of the dramas. Even in "Jealousy Incarnate," with all its mixed signals, I still knew who the female lead was leaning towards.

My favourite love triangle has to be Reply 1988 Deok Sun - Taek - Jung Hwan. For me, I have never had a problem with second lead syndrome and love triangles don't really 'bother' me because I always know how it's going to end. The lead guy is always so obvious from the beginning. I started to watch 1988 when it first aired but was really busy at the time and ended up only really following dramabeans recaps and I was so devastated because I thought that Jung Hwan was for sure Deok Sun's husband. I was actually so upset I refused to watch the drama (lol). But recently my friends convinced me that even to watch it in full and I'm so glad I did because the love triangle made so much sense once I actually watched it. I picked this love triangle because it's not JUST a love triangle, it was a coming of age and maturation between friends and because it upended the idea of 'main lead'. Sometimes first love doesn't work out and sometimes you wait too long and you lose your chance. It was nice to see that in a drama and it really hit home for me :)

Too many to choose, but I'll start with the love triangle between Lee Jae-ha, Kim Hang-ah, and Eun Shi-kyung in The King 2 Hearts.

I love the love triangle mainly because it is never truly a rivalry. Kim Hang-ah swoons over Eun Shi-kyung just to get revenge for all of Lee Jae-ha's teasing. Eun Shi-kyung never realizes that he's suppose to be competition for Kim Hang-ah's heart, yet he has to deal with all the pettiness Lee Jae-ha throws his way. Lee Jae-ha's mostly unwarranted jealousy makes him realize his real feelings towards Kim Hang-ah, while Eun Shi-kyung ends up becoming the best bro he could have ever asked for.

There are more then one for sure but the one i'd like to mention here is from one of my favorite old school Korean dramas, Model. The 3 way love triangle between Kim Namjoo, Han Jaesuk, and Jang Donggun was so intense! I forgot their character names but I think it was Kyungrin and Wonjoon. Man I want to see it again!

Oh my gosh! This was actually one of the first dramas to cross my mind, too! I used to love this drama, and I had such a crush on Han Jaesuk. I also had SLS in Purity (순수) because of him. I really want to rewatch Model now.
