Jo In-sung takes charge of epic film Ansi City

Jo In-sung (The King) has just confirmed that he’s signed on to star in the historical film Ansi City. The movie is set during an epic period of war where 500,000 mighty troops from the Tang empire come to conquer Goguryeo, but are stopped and eventually repelled by the tenacious 88-day defense mounted by Ansi City.

Jo In-sung has accepted the role of legendary hero Yang Manchun for the movie. His character is a patriotic leader whose strong will and determination hold the people together throughout the arduous assault on the fortress and subsequent siege. At first, Lee Byung-heon was also offered a role in this project, but he turned it down because his schedule was already packed. But it looks like Ansi City may be the hit sageuk blockbuster of 2018 because they’re pulling out all the stops on this one.

The main investor for this project, Studio NEW, has already poured buckets of money—15 billion KRW’s worth—into pre-production. But I guess after the wild success of Descended From the Sun, they have the capital to spare. Director Kim Kwang-shik (Tabloid Truth, My Dear Desperado) is helming the project, and it’s been reported that rising star Park Bo-gum (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) has received an offer to be in the film. And I really want this matchup to happen because a Jo In-sung/Park Bo-gum soldier bromance a la Descended From the Sun would be aaaaamazing.

Filming for Ansi City will begin this August after casting ends, and the movie is projected to premiere in early 2018.

Ahhh! I've always thought Park Bo-gum looked just like Jo In-sung's kid brother, and I would give anything to see them play actual brothers. Okay, not anything, but many things. I'd give many things.

He actually looks a lot like Moon Chae-won to me (they have the same smile)

But I'd sacrifice a few percentage points off my favourite dramas' ratings to get him in something with Jo In-sung. Not enough dramas/movies do the two-leads (as in, not of opposite sexes) thing.

I think he'd have a bigger role playing opposite Commander Yang. Ansi's legacy was dedicated to only one man.
A certain Yeon would stood out more if they go all the way to the end of Goguryeo.

I knew Lee Byung-heon would bow out. Namhansanseong looks solid with Park Hae-Il and Kim Yun-seok. Hwang Dong-hyuk has a lot to work with and hopefully he'd give us a sageuk as good at "War of the Arrows."
I can't stand Injo but as long as the story is not about him I'd enjoy it. "Cruel Palace" is the only sageuk that had me invested in his reign.

I love the 3 kingdom era especially this timeline of Goguryeo history even with the lack of contemporary documents.
I'm kind of iffy on this whole project. I wish Kim Sung-su was the writer/director since this involves Korea/China and maybe he would be able to get some real Chinese actors like he did with Zhang Ziyi in Musa.

I hope the huge budget is put to good use. Some of Goguryeo's most epic battles was held at Ansi Fortress. Make it count!

War of the Arrows was incredible - my lone regret about watching it is that I couldn't do it in a theatre. Park Hae-il never disappoints, but he was outstanding, as was the entire cast (it was also my into to Kim Mu-yeol, for which I thank the movie gods).

I'm always interested in non-Joseon sageuks for the change of aesthetics (I'm still hacked off that Bride of the Water God isn't going to be a sageuk at all, damn you cheapo tvN!), but I hope this one delivers.

Yea WotA is one of my all time favorite sageuk film. I auto followed that whole cast because they were so good. Even those with limited screen time like Lee Kyoung-young left an impression (he's always great though). I didn't care much for Park Ki-woong until War of the Arrows. I've been checking out his dramas from time to time.
I wonder what Director Kim Han-min is going to come out with next? It's been awhile since "Roaring Currents."

I guess I'm going to eat my words because Park Hae-il is playing King Injo lol. I'm so going to hate him in Namhansanseong.

I hear you about "The Bride of the Water God." I'm not a fan of the cast though so I can skip it and wait forever for a sageuk version.*Sigh* but for how long?

Im glad JIS continue to do film, drama has too much pressure of ratings. Even he debuted 20 years ago but he only has about 10+ projects. He is a good actor, just stay in Chungmuro so we can see him in more projects.

Just today, I was having a discussion with someone about how nice it would be to get more projects from Park Bo-gum and here is this news!

I read the first line as 'Jo In-Sung, the king...' and I didn't think twice about it. No need to state the obvious. ? Also Bo-Gummy would be amaaaaazing. He always is. I just wish this was going to be a drama.
