Oh Hae-young Again PD casts Yunho, Kyung Su-jin for new drama

The PD of Oh Hae-young Again and Introverted Boss has announced his next drama, titled Meloholic, and already we have casting confirmation for both its leads: DBSK’s U-Know Yunho (Records of a Night Watchman) in his post-army comeback (he completed his service last month), and Kyung Su-jin (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) as his co-star. I’m surprised this drama isn’t playing the coy will-they-or-won’t-they casting game like every other show does these days, but I won’t complain about it.

Meloholic, despite its title, is not described as a melodrama and is instead a “romantic mystery comedy.” Based on a Naver webtoon of the same name, the drama features a man with the ability to read people’s minds (Yunho’s character Yoo Eun-ho), who’s described as a man who makes all the women’s hearts flutter but does not date. The story kicks off when he meets Kyung Su-jin’s character, Han Ye-ri, who has never dated because her two-faced personality has gotten in the way of romance.

I… have a lot of feelings about this news, and a lot of them aren’t good feelings, although I’m trying to maintain an optimistic view. I was initially glad to hear that PD Song Hyun-wook would be back with a new drama, because while Introverted Boss was a disappointment, I considered that a writing bungle more than a directorial one and really loved both Oh Hae-young Again and his drama before that, Marriage Not Dating. And Kyung Su-jin has shown promise at rom-coms and in supporting roles (Plus Nine Boys, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju), so I have some confidence that she’ll make a solid leading lady.

But… you know, Yunho. I quite like Yunho as a performer and person—he seems like an incredibly hard worker and a generally decent guy—but I’ve hated his acting in everything I’ve seen (Heading to the Ground, Poseidon, Records of a Night Watchman) and he has been for years the standard by which I measure the rock-bottom of foot-acting. I give PD Song a pass for casting Park Hye-soo in Introverted Boss because she’d shown promise and we were all hoping she’d be better. Plus, PD Song has cast lesser-knowns in the past who then knocked it out of the park (see: Yeon Woo-jin, Han Groo, Seo Hyun-jin), so it was a reasonable expectation. But if you cast Yunho, then you’re going into this with eyes wide open.

Meloholic is being produced by KBS Media and plans to begin filming at the end of this month, so any day now. It is currently in talks over scheduling.

I've been waiting for Song PD's new drama because his patterns somehow shows good drama-bad drama-good drama and this one is supposed to be a good one. But...... You know Yunho (pun intended) , I love you..... But..... Please just..... Reject this one or smth :(

Haha, I've noticed the same thing and was hoping for a good one this time. Casting Kyung Su-jin is an awesome choice because I'd love for her to move up to leading roles, but Yunho's casting definitely isn't very encouraging.

I can't even pretend to be very cautiously optimistic like for water god. Yunho's fans beg him to not touch acting. We knew he'd have to do some solo work, and perhaps trying to push him as an actor will give him longevity in the entertainment world, but WHY. Why are we not playing to this man's many many talents!!!!1!1!1!1!

I don't even know if "Bride of the Water God" worth being cautiously optimistic. The cast is really weak. Nam Joo-Hyuk was good at Weightlifting Fairy, until it was revealed he and Lee Sung-Kyung are actually dating. Was he acting or just natural? Can he bring the same level of emotions to this drama? Shin Se-Kyung and Krystal are plainly bad actors. Only Lim Ju-Hwan doesn't deserve secondary role.

Bride of the Water God has a weird combination. On the writer side, it has a very solid writer, but the cast assemble is rather weak. I have a mixed feeling over this drama, either to watch or discard.

Well... if his looks can melt all the girls' heart in real life, there's no reason why it wouldn't in the drama. It's not as if his looks changed.

A very surprising choice indeed. All of the other actors, I wonder why does it have to be Yunho? Like what everybody is saying, Yunho is a good entertainer, but I am not sure of him as an actor...

Should I get myself ready for lots of cringey moments then?

Crying at the corner*
Why my fav never get this kind of opportunity. ?I love this PD's works although IB was quite a disappointment, but still had few memorable things.

Yunho is bad in acting, if he is to play supporting cast maybe it will be nice. Kyung Su Jin - I don't know if I have actually liked her in anything before. She sometimes was quite OK, sometimes don't.I wish she can be a lead in something like weekend drama first. Yes she was part of main casts in Bluebird House but she is forgettable.

Hmm. maybe the writing can save this drama. Maybe yes. Maybe. Optimist.

He's one of those people who we all love an a idol and entertainer. He just seems like good people. He's talented in a lot of things....but not acting. It's saying something when people who really do love him think he shouldn't act.

But who knows? Maybe the writer and PD can make some magic happen so that we can see his natural charms and not whatever he's been doing in his other roles.

it doesn't seem as though people are being overly critical. They seem to have, in fact observed his acting, and have come to an almost unanimous conclusion that acting just isn't his thing.

It would be so fun if he came back and shocked everyone with how good he now is, but sadly, thats not terribly likely to happen.

Is the PD of this drama on a self-sabotaging streak or something? He got himself burned with Park Hye Soo who had at least delivered a credible performance in a recent role and by all means could have been expected to potentially do a good job, so now he's going for surefire disaster with an actor who is pretty much the bottom of the barrel in the world of acting-dols to the point where his own fans are begging him not to act? You know, just to be sure they'll have a bad performance in there.

Also, inb4 comments about how he's "improved" in a recent role and "deserves a chance" aka the same old tired discourse we get from fans or hopefuls who try to credit said idol for learning one new facial expression.

i was really disappointed with introvert boss, both with the writing & acting by the lead actress. i see talent in her (from other drama) but when seeing her in the said drama, it was like seeing someone trying to be another oh hae young (no pun intended).

I've only seen Yunho in Night Watchman and the web series I Order You. I didn't think he was terrible. I thought he a bit rough and inexperienced but it didn't take me out of the story. Now, for reference, I thought the woman who was the main lead in Introverted Boss was actually bad and watching her was like hearing fingernails on a blackboard until almost the end of the series when she finally settled in to the part. I do think a lead in a regular drama might be a stretch if the role isn't something easy for him. Still, he just did his service and if he's ready to jump back into work like this his head must be "in the game" as it were.

I would say the drama should not invest too much money and be frugal. Introverted Boss was painful to watch, and even amazing Yeon Woo-jin could not save it. Marriage not Dating also had plot holes, but won over with really likable leads and chemistry between them. I've never seen Yunho, but if everyone says he is bad...Kyung Su-jin did pretty well in all dramas I saw her, but her face is, unfortunately, quite plastic (I have similar issue looking at Kim Ah-joong and Nam Gyu-Ri). The story really needs a good writer to adapt it.

Lol @ "But… you know, Yunho." Mte, tbh. I was excited for the PD and the character descriptions are actually interesting, but the casting is meh. Are we dealing with split personalities or is Su-jin gonna play two characters? Oh man, is the next drama trend gonna be actors playing more than one role and/or split personalities? Dramaland--you can't have just one.

When I read the news I was hoping that it would be a webtoon or drama special. I don't know if Yunho can carry the lead role for 16 episodes though he was quite serviceable in Records of the Nightwatchman. I'm suffering through 11 episodes of My Secret Romance where the only good thing about it is the lead actor and second lead male's acting so it can't be overemphasized how a good actor can salvage a badly written drama or kill a good one.

I know acting isn't Yunho's forte, but I might check it out for him since I haven't seen him in anything for two years. All depends on if I'm busy with other shows or not at that time. I don't mind KSJ since her character at least got an arc in WFKBJ.

As a huge fan of Yunho, I just wish I could plead to him that this is not the comeback I wanted. ??

I'd much rather watch him perform onstage! Though I understand that acting might be his passion. Sad.

Anywayyy, I find knetz' reaction to his acting comeback strangely cute. They're against his being in a drama, but are kind in criticizing him. Lol.
