[Staff Spotlight] Get to know javabeans

With so many minions contributing regularly to this site, we thought it might be nice to get to know everyone on Team Dramabeans in a more official capacity. It’s easy for us to forget sometimes that you guys don’t get a lot of chances to get to know our minions as people, and not just drama-recapping machines. They are very good at that—being recapping machines, I mean—but I can vouch for them also being very good at being people, too, and quite interesting ones at that!

So we whipped up some questions to put to the team, and will be posting these regularly until everyone’s had a chance in the spotlight. Hope you enjoy getting to know our minion army.

Me first!

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

I have no particular reason for picking javabeans; I needed a handle and it was coffee-related, which is always a plus. My avatar comes from the Dal Ja’s Spring episode that features several women struggling through their roles as women, professionals, mothers, and bosses, and “Wonder Dal Ja” was something of a symbol for an everywoman being admirable for doing her best job being herself.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

Jealousy in 1992. I grew up with dramas always playing in the background because my parents watched them every day, but Jealousy was the first that caught my interest, and the first that inspired that excited, hoppy feeling inside that I would later come to know as drama addiction.

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

I once drove a KBS documentary PD around LA for a week as his personal chauffeur/errand runner. I was 19, and I had no interest in documentaries or KBS but was asked by a friend of a friend of a friend whose only contact in LA was me. I watched him scrambling to put together half-baked concepts and film snippets of scattered ideas to air in Korea as actual TV episodes. I now have a pretty low opinion of KBS documentaries.

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

Being in an unrequited crush-o-go-round that would have been hilarious for how perfectly it misaligned everyone’s feelings, except for how much it freaking hurt at the time. If it had been a drama, it would have been the C-list kind that loses its way by being way too angsty for 12 episodes and then fizzles out without a resolution.

What’s your favorite drama that you recapped?

I try to enjoy each experience, but there have been a couple that felt a little extra special. Healer was a really satisfying experience thanks to the Dramabeans fandom that really embraced it with warmth and positivity. I look back fondly (now) at all the cracky dramas that caused Dramabeans to crash when the recap was posted (Boys Before Flowers, You’re Beautiful, Dream High, City Hunter, You From Another Star…). Coffee Prince was probably the one that really solidified the satisfaction of recapping as its own process, because it was so early and I didn’t know what I was doing then, or what I even wanted recapping to be. Amazing what it’s become.

What drama genres do you especially like?

I like romantic comedies so much I even like the bad ones. Also like campus relationship stories, comedies (the wackier and more screwball, the better), action thrillers, low-key indie-esque projects. I also love sci-fi, but only when it’s done very well.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

I’ll try everything, but the threshold is low for strident makjang (the ones that actively strive to raise your blood pressure) and overindulgent tearjerkers, and I’m ambivalent to straight-up prodecurals, whether legal, medical, or police.

Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?

I’ve never been an abandoned teenager, rocker, or male, but I did feel a peculiar affinity for Sung Joon’s character in Shut Up: Flower Boy Band because I felt like his emotional reactions are what mine would have been. Withdrawn, seething anger that has nowhere to go but inward? Repressing feelings and facing everything alone? Ding, ding, ding. It didn’t necessarily make me like him more (I know what a flaw is when I see it!), but it made me really buy into the story and the conflicts. More recently, Individualist Ji-young. Who needs people? Humbug.

What drama character would you want to be?

Buki (Wang Bit-na) from The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry. So cool, self-possessed, no-bullshit, and totally content with herself. Striving to be like her would be an admirable goal. Lee Yuri in Father Is Strange is a more flawed version of rockstar professional woman (equally badass, though), while Buki is the more aspirational role model.

What was your major in school?

Japanese.

What’s a random skill you have?

I have a brown belt in Taekwondo, broke boards with my fist, and have lost 100% of the sparring matches I have ever attempted. I loved learning the choreographed forms and technique, but couldn’t apply those skills in action to (literally) save my life. I probably should have studied ballet instead.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

Singin’ in the Rain, Wonderfalls, and 30 Rock.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

JYP, because I feel like he would teach me to be more productive and appreciative of every minute of my day and every opportunity of my life. I mean, I’ve already drunk the Kool-Aid on JYP’s eccentric brand of life philosophy, but a refresher course could be handy.

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing? (Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, or sloth.)

Pride. I can readily imagine the scenario where I am too proud to ask for help attempting/doing/moving anything and am found weeks later, crushed underneath the bookcase I insisted on moving myself, to my eternal dismay.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

A teenage girl is sexually assaulted in front of her helpless boyfriend, gets a new face, and comes back years later with a newfound talent for songwriting and rallies her ragtag rocker friends to win the battle of the bands and score a record deal. The most violently traumatic feel-good underdog musical of the year.

Yay JB! It was nice getting to know you better! I also love Singing in the Rain (and much classic film), and Wonderfalls! Did you like Pushing Daisies?? It's by the same creator and has the same fun quirkiness about it. It's delightful!

I have just watched episode 3 of Circle, and now thinking of Javabeans mutant baby drama... I just hope I won't get nightmares. Maybe you could make a Halloween feature of this? 'Guess our unholy alliance dramas.'

Nice to meet you @javabeans! Nice to meet you. *does the little "Aigoo Kim Sajang" greeting from Reply 1988* Thank you for all your work!

What a wonderful idea!

We (I believe I speak for most if not all Beanies) would love to know you, our dear DB Team, as individuals and persons. Ultimately it's who you are and are becoming who really matters, well, for you as well as for us ?. So thanks for every opportunity, albeit in a remote, disjointed way, to journey along with you through whatever you share in this wonderful blog, as we grow along with you. May we all keep becoming better in every good way! ?

JB, Your mash-up of most hated/loved dramas got me LOL. I was so disappointed in I Miss You too. What a waste of talent.

Thanks too JB, for your 'Eternal Love' for Healer. Your recaps and reviews made a sweet drama-watch all the lovelier. That was really the best commenting experience of my life, because it was with such terrific Beanies, (some of whom have become friends and several of whom are still in contact with each other) and yourself. What great, wild fun we had!

I'm so grateful for this 'place' of meeting with several who've become more than fellow commenters!

Cheers to you JB! Take care of yourself and lotsa love!!! ? ?

Nice to meet you, javabeans! I was drawn to this site not only because we have many similarities in what we like in a drama, but also because I truly appreciate your and your fellow beanies' writing. I'm an English literature and writing teacher and I was struck with the dynamic elegance of your sentences! I sometimes refer would-be blogger students (who have told me they like Korean dramas) to your site to learn how to summarize and develop their own voice simultaneously. It's a skill in demand on the internet these days!

If i know taekwondo,it would have been a waste on me too because for the life of me,i could never have the courage to strike anyone for real even if it's just for practice. Hurting someone by accident is even too much for me. I like watching karate movies though.

OK. I just finished reading that Healing Camp with JYP recap post and ohmygoodness I think I've become a convert! I am already an OC person, but he is on a whole new level. It's insane! I admire him for his level of commitment at everything he does. Thanks for sharing, JB!

So... when you say "we whipped up the questions," who's "we" and does that mean you had to answer your own question? :D

Talking about minions as recapping-machines is giving me flashback to Hangyul the producing-machine. I just came from the podcast, and what you talked about is just fresh in my mind :D

I do enjoy procedurals if they're infused with humor, so I don't know if that still counts as a straight-up procedural?

This is very cool. Love how personal this site feels despite how established and well run it is. It's the little things like this that make it special. Kudos to the big bosses and the other recappers for making it feel like one big happy family. Thanks for sharing @javabeans

I'm looking to getting to know the DB family better and see just how diverse a bunch they are. It truly is wonderful that the love for Kdramas has brought so many people together. ❤️

I've been a silent follower of dramabeans from 2010, and this is the first time I'm commenting. Your recaps and other posts have been a part of my system since then. There are days that drama recaps are my only safe place. Thank you for starting this, and for continually giving us glimpses of who you are, apart from being a great recapper. It's nice to know that we are all fans here at the end of the day. Thanks again!

I remember Coffee Prince era...those days the recaps were a saviour as the subs came much slower than nowadays. I used to read the recaps and toggle between your page and raw episode. Now subs come out almost the next morning or early afternoon. how fortunate are this generation of kdrama fans. hehe

Been with you since... gosh... 2007? 2008? I can't even remember now. Was it 2007 08 or 09 you started recapping? Regardless of when you started, I've read your recaps since I first started watching kdramas. And girl they have been a huge blessing when watching.

But they weren't necessarily a blessing because of the little tidbit explanations of korean culture (though those WERE massively helpful... kdrama version Me: "what's an oppa?"). It wasn't even because of the clearer translations you would provide for pivotal scenes(though like I said, MASSIVELY helpful). I loved reading your recaps because... well... it felt like I was watching it with a friend. For a long time, I didn't have anyone around me that watched kdramas, so your blog was the only connection to other K drama lovers I had. We also have very similar tastes in genres, haha, and the dramas you like and dislike I tend to happen to like and dislike as well for the most part. So I had a voice I could trust when it came to recommendations. Which is verrrrrry important. I've wasted one too many an hour on dramas that weren't worth the time...

So THANK YOU Javabeans for taking the time to build this community! You, Girlfriday and this community are a wonderful blessing!

All the best!

Happy to read this @javabeans! For so many years of watching kdramas and reading recaps, you (and GF) defined my definition of drama recaps! No offense meant to other minions, as they are really good. It's just my own biased POV.

The time during Dream High was crazy! I more often experienced those crash becaue at that time I really wanted to be the first to comment. (Is that still true now?) Although truthfully, with those recaps, DH became so much more than it was. It made me love it even more.

My daily must-reads are dramabeans, the NYT AND HuffPo, in that order. Thanks for this peek behind the scenes and for the ones to come, you guys are rock stars for us!
I especially like this JB comment :" I look back fondly (now) at all the cracky dramas that caused Dramabeans to crash when the recap was posted". Ah! The good old days! Signs that you were the leading edge of a very hot trend, being made hotter by YOU. Thanks, dramabeans ?

It just amazing to me that even you guys' avatar comes from dramas. Shows how much dramas are part of your life. Also, you majored in japanese, jb? That means you can officially speak, read and write three languages. That's so cool! And taekwondo? Wow! In my excitement to read the new feature as soon as possible, that's all the information I retained, off to read again!

And So looking forward to getting to know all the other recappers better!

Ah, Coffee Prince! These were the days! I remember stumbling on this site frantically looking for Coffee Prince recaps, it was so addicting! Because at that time, English subtitled episodes were not coming out as fast as today! How times have changed! And you were so good Javabeans! You had them on the same day, thoughtfully written, if not mere hours after the episode aired! You saved us! Or spoiled us?! Or addicted us?! Nah. Whatever, I love it!
Not only that, but you also always included a song from the drama. It brought so much more to the recap, made it a whole package I guess. Got me into OSTs and I think this site actually introduced me to kpop, or indie Kpop! It was not just Coffee Prince, but I think almost every post had a song at the top! A song of the day. And the Friday Open Thread, I used to love listening to your song selections! Ah, these were the days!
You have done such an amazing job making this site what it is today, bringing in new talents, I never thought that 10 years later I would still be coming here, still addicted and still enjoying this wonderful site!
This is a great feature, as always, so much thought and care in continuing to make this such a warm place to be! I admire you, and your DB team! And I thank you, all of you!
Yes, with so many minions now, it is hard to really get to "know" anyone as we have come to know you and girlfriday over the years! Looking forward to doing that here! Thank you!

@javabeans Your "life moment belonging in a K-drama" moment was exactly me in Grade school... I liked the same guy all throughout elementary, junior high (middle school), and high school--- it didn't help that we attended the same school all 12 years together)--- but our wires, timing, and feelings kept getting crossed and it HURT. SO. MUCH at the time

Re JYP - I didn't know who you were talking about so followed the link. What impressed me about him then (and I don't want to know if I'm completely wrong in this!) is he was so successful in making a motivational film for all teens without falling into too sappy a story, and when he spoke about it I could tell he sincerely wanted to inspire his audience to follow their dreams. Reading your recap after following your link from this story - I'm a teacher but I'm also an academic advisor, and the advice he gives about making rules for yourself and following them is exactly the kind of advice I give students on academic probation. He's a smart man.

I also love Wonderfalls!!! Such a short-lived series, but so good. Barely anyone remembers it and it makes me so sad.

Healer is still my most memorable commenting experience so I'm glad it became special to you too. I actually discovered your site right when you were recapping Coffee Prince, through your White Love Story lyrics post. I still have memories of going through all your posts on Dal Ja's Spring, etc.

It wasn't until I rediscovered DB with the You're Beautiful Rom-com Suggestion post years later, that I became a beanie for good. No regrets! This was a few months before SUFBB aired, and being at the same age as the characters & having lost a best friend, I, likewise, identified with Sung Joon's character a lot. I tend to bottle things up too. Lol, he was also my first drama-crush that was in my age range.

When you came to Boston at Harvard to speak my drama friend and I came and were happy to see you and girl friday there as well. It was a dream come true! Yea! Thanks for having this site and I recall many of those dramas that you recapped I was always refreshing and eagerly waiting for them (as at the time my patience for subs wore thin or watching it raw I wanted a bit more understanding of the overview of my poor Korean skills culled from years of watching Korean dramas. Love this site and grateful it has flourished over the years! Yipppee and keep up the great work!
