Fight My Way: Episode 8
by LollyPip
They’re so painfully awkward, I love it! Something about Dong-man and Ae-ra getting all twisted up around each other just makes me grin uncontrollably, because they’re so adorable in their refusal to admit that they love each other. But it’s getting harder for them to hide their feelings, and soon someone is going to have to step up and be honest, even at the risk of losing their friendship forever.
Round 8: “She was pretty…”
When Dong-man hears from an old classmate that Moo-bin is engaged, he rushes to find Ae-ra. Still upset, she tells him to stay out of her love life, but he yells that he has to get involved because she’s always screwing it up. When he comforts her as she cries, Ae-ra tells him to stop and blurts, “It’s because you make my heart flutter!”
As Dong-man stares at her, Ae-ra tells him to be careful because she’s not cool or sophisticated, and that like a dog, once she bites she’ll never let go. Dong-man stammers in confusion, and she warns him that she’s close to biting, so they’d better both be careful.
She gives Dong-man his shoes back so he can drive them home on the borrowed scooter, then she climbs on behind him. Dong-man stiffens when he feels Ae-ra’s purse wedged between her chest and his back, ha. She says it’s so he can concentrate on driving, but he quips that his back can’t feel something so small, meaning her chest. Pfft, he deserves that head-butt she gives him in retaliation.
As they walk home, Joo-man tries to explain to Seol-hee that his kiss with Ye-jin was nothing. Seol-hee takes exception to his description of the kiss being like a slug on his lips, disbelieving that he didn’t like it at least a little. She tells him that she’ll handle the slug from here on out.
Dong-man and Ae-ra’s walk home is a lot quieter, both of them feeling awkward and uncomfortable. Eventually Dong-man asks if Ae-ra will come to his match in two days, and she starts to yell at him for fighting but then trails off when the awkwardness returns. Dong-man tells her that he’s fine, so she can act like she normally does.
It’s too late, so Dong-man desperately comments on the stars, of which there are none, hee. They’re saved from themselves when Joo-man and Seol-hee show up, but Seol-hee goes straight home, then Joo-man heads up to his place, neither of them in the mood to drink.
Alone again, Dong-man and Ae-ra go to the roof to drink, and Dong-man promises to handle Moo-bin. He asks Ae-ra why she keeps dating such awful guys, which is apparently a habit that goes all the way back to middle school, when the boy Ae-ra was dating stole her phone and changed schools.
Dong-man also remembers the guy in the band (Ae-ra: “We didn’t date!”), Moo-ki who got another woman pregnant, and now Moo-bin. Ae-ra says haughtily that he left out her real first love, whom Dong-man only knows as “Wrist Guy.” Ae-ra says that her arm still hurts when it rains because of Wrist Guy, and Dong-man grumbles that he’s another loser.
Ae-ra gets lost in a memory from 2011, when she and Dong-man had gone out to eat before he did his army duty. She assures him that he’ll forget all about Hye-ran once he’s away, but Dong-man argues that guys think about their girlfriends even more at times like these.
The next morning, Ae-ra takes a pot of hangover porridge to Dong-man’s place, with a note saying that she’ll wait for him to come home from the army. She finds Hye-ran sleeping on his stoop and tiptoes past her, and when Dong-man doesn’t answer her knock, she leaves the pot of porridge on his doorstep. But she doesn’t see an errant breeze blow her note away.
Dong-man wakes to find a note that Hye-ran slipped under his door, asking him to meet her outside. He finds the porridge and naturally assumes it’s from Hye-ran, and she doesn’t correct him.
A while later, Ae-ra runs back to Dong-man’s, having forgotten the kimchi. She hears weird noises coming from his balcony and wonders if they have rats, and then she sees him and Hye-ran, deep in a makeout session. She tries to escape before they see her, but she trips and goes tumbling. Dong-man runs down to Ae-ra, who’s clutching her badly hurt wrist. OMG, Dong-man is Wrist Guy?? He’s Ae-ra’s first love!
Hye-ran puts on a big tear-filled show over Dong-man leaving for two years as Ae-ra grumbles that it’s not like she’ll wait for him. Dong-man checks Ae-ra’s wrist and fusses at her for crying because of a fall, saying that she’s ugly when she cries, never guessing that her tears are because he’s leaving. He wipes her tears with his cuff and tells her softly to stay out of trouble. It doesn’t escape Hye-ran’s notice that his goodbye to Ae-ra is longer and more tender than the one he gave to her.
Back in the present, Dong-man wonders how Ae-ra could hurt her wrist just from liking someone. Argh, he’s so dense! Ae-ra says that Wrist Guy was utterly useless and had no idea she liked him, and Dong-man sighs that clueless people never even know they’re useless. Tell me about it.
He asks Ae-ra if she still thinks about her first love, so Ae-ra says that a first love is like an immunization shot—you’re nervous before you get it, then it hurts a bit, but then you’re okay, with just a small scar left behind.
Dong-man laughs and says that first loves are bullcrap, then they retire for the night. But when he’s alone, he can’t stop wondering who Ae-ra’s first love is. Ae-ra lies in bed, sighing at what a dimwit Dong-man can be.
The dimwit spends a particularly long time getting ready for breakfast the next morning, spraying his wrist with a liberal amount of Febreeze (to smell nice?). Joo-man keeps sniffing him and complaining that he’s tainting the food with his smell, then Seol-hee notices that both Dong-man and Ae-ra seem nervous and quiet.
Dong-man denies that they’re fighting, weirdly waving his Febreezed wrist at Ae-ra, like he wants her to take a whiff. Seol-hee notices that Ae-ra is wearing lip gloss to breakfast, which catches Dong-man’s attention, though he comes to her rescue and says that’s her natural lip color.
They both leave for the day at the same time, and HAHA, Ae-ra does a u-turn right back inside when she sees him. Dong-man calls her outside and awkwardly asks where she’s going today. She says she’s going shopping for a suit for her KBC interview, and he asks stiffly how long it will take.
Joo-man and Seol-hee’s trip to work is no less cringe-worthy as Joo-man keeps muttering that the kiss was nothing. Seol-hee possessively grabs his briefcase handle, arguing that it’s not like she’s holding his hand when Joo-man grows nervous that they’ll be seen.
Dong-man tags along while Ae-ra tries on clothes, grouching that women always need a new outfit for everything. To every outfit she tries on, all Dong-man can muster is an “It’s okay…” at each one until she finally blows up and asks why he even came if he wasn’t going to tell her which one is pretty on her.
Dong-man stands and yells, “All! Just all! You look pretty in all of them!” The salesgirl giggles as he flops back down in his seat, looking like he’s either going to flee or burst into tears. So cute.
After the shopping is done, Dong-man says he’s off to the gym to train for his match tomorrow. Ae-ra bristles, angry that he’s not obeying her order to stop fighting even after being beaten so badly. But she tags along anyway, curious about where he trains.
Seol-hee surprises Joo-man with a kiss in the copy room, and they nearly get caught by his boss, Manager Choi. Seol-hee flounces back to work, and Manager Choi comments that Joo-won looks like he’s wearing lip gloss, LOL.
The next time Joo-man and Seol-hee see each other at the office, she brazenly grabs his butt, and he whines that she’s making him too nervous to work. Seol-hee says that if he told people that they’ve been dating for so long they may as well be married, then he won’t have to be nervous anymore—which her supervisor overhears. In private, she berates Seol-hee for keeping her relationship a secret, urging her to either tell everyone or keep cool about it. She admits that she was in a similar situation once, and that it’s frustrating and heartbreaking.
The guys at the gym are unhappy to have Ae-ra invade their manly lair, especially Coach Hwang, whom she orders to pay Dong-man for his time spent teaching. Coach yells at his mean trainee, whose name we finally learn is Byung-joo, for punching Dong-man too hard when they both have matches tomorrow.
Byung-joo talks back, then pummels Dong-man even more viciously. Ae-ra snarls at him, then she launches a hilarious aegyo attack, pouting in a squeaky baby voice, “Ae-ra wants to try!” LOL, Dong-man’s head whips around so fast you can practically hear the snap.
Batting giant doe-eyes at Byung-joo, Ae-ra asks him to teach her, chirping that he’s the smartest and handsomest man in the place. He invites her into the ring and Dong-man begs her not to go psycho on him, but she ignores him and shames Byung-joo into not wearing a helmet. He’s gonna regret that.
Byung-joo demonstrates how to anticipate a punch, bragging that he can always evade an incoming fist. Ae-ra throws a few puny little jabs, squealing with girlish glee when he easily dodges them… then the moment his guard is down, she slams a fist into his nose, drawing blood. HAHA, that was awesome.
At a company lunch, everyone is talking about their first in-house couple who’ve been together for six years. But it’s not Joo-man and Seol-hee—it’s Seol-hee’s supervisor and her boyfriend, who’ve finally gone public with a wedding announcement.
When Ye-jin tries to serve Joo-man, Seol-hee’s supervisor nudges her and announces that Seol-hee has a boyfriend too. Seol-hee says it’s true and that they’re getting married soon, as well (Joo-man’s carefully neutral face is cracking me up). Uninterested in Seol-hee, Manager Choi tells Joo-man to do well with his kimchi project, get promoted, and get married too.
He asks Ye-jin to describe her ideal man, and she names Park Bo-gum. Seol-hee blurts that her boyfriend looks exactly like Park Bo-gum, making Joo-man spit his drink. HA.
After the meal, Seol-hee invites Ye-jin to have tea with her, alone. Ye-jin accepts, thinking that they’re girl-bonding because their parents both sell pork trotters and they both like pink. Seol-hee thinks that if this were a drama, Ye-jin’s character would be rude, annoyed that she’s actually sweet and pretty.
Over tea and cake, Ye-jin asks Seol-hee about her boyfriend, and when Seol-hee describes him as a teddy bear, Ye-jin says happily that they have the same taste in men. Seol-hee lights up to hear that Ye-jin has a boyfriend, since it means she’s not a real threat with regards to Joo-man.
Ye-jin offers to show Seol-hee pictures of her guy, reminding her to keep this a secret. Seol-hee’s face falls to see that the pictures are all candid shots of Joo-man. Ye-jin admits that they aren’t dating yet, but she’s confident they will be soon.
Looking at Ye-jin’s overjoyed expression and listening to her gush about how happy she is, Seol-hee can’t help but be reminded of the way she felt when she first fell for Joo-man. She imagines throwing water in Ye-jin’s face, or maybe giving her a good kimchi-slap. But then she realizes that in real life, it’s really hard to make yourself slap someone. HAHA.
Tak-soo and his manager Tae-hee manufacture a dating scandal for him in the hopes of overshadowing the rumor that he hired the Brazilian fighter to beat Dong-man. Tak-soo’s impatience with his girlfriend’s terrible acting skills makes her angry, since this scandal will risk her singing career.
As they walk home that night, Dong-man teases Ae-ra for punching Byung-joo, secretly pleased at the way she defended him. She argues that it’s no different than getting mad when someone hurts your puppy, hee. He tells her to get dressed, and they meet Joo-man and Seol-hee on the roof so Ae-ra can practice for her interview tomorrow.
Ae-ra’s prepared speech sounds great, and her friends are certain she’ll get the job. Seol-hee tears up, sniffling that she’s been watching Ae-ra and Dong-man working for their dreams since they were kids, and tomorrow they’re both getting their big shot.
In the morning, Ae-ra is nervous as she sets out for her interview. She asks Dong-man if she looks okay, and just being asked to look at her makes his brain lock up again. He stammers that maybe it’s because she usually she looks like a beast… and as he’s working up the nerve to call her pretty without actually saying the word, Landlady Hwang pops up behind him and scares him half to death.
“Pretty! He means you’re pretty!” she yells, while Dong-man tries not to curse, ha. She notes that they look guilty, like she caught them in the middle of something, which just makes them look even more guilty.
Ae-ra shoves Dong-man into a taxi and tells him not to tire himself out before his match. She even gives him money to pay for it, saying that she’s his first sponsor. Awww. He gives her the address of his fight just in case she changes her mind, but she says she’s never watching him fight again, and his face falls. Double awww.
She heads to her interview, looking confident and professional. But when it’s her turn to interview, she’s the only one not asked any questions. She’s told that her resume is so lacking that they aren’t interested in learning more about her, because she doesn’t have anywhere near the education and experience of the other candidates.
They assume that because she hasn’t been studying and working in the business, that it shows a lack of dedication. But Ae-ra says that while the other candidates were volunteering and studying abroad, she was earning money.
She calls her dad afterward to ask if she can come visit, but he says that he’s too busy with his restaurant. As Ae-ra heads home, she thinks about how she and her friends live hard, but their resumes have nothing to show for it. She hides her face behind the curtain on the bus so that nobody will see her crying.
Tak-soo’s dating scandal breaks right on schedule, though he’s angry when he learns that Dong-man is fighting his debut match today. Tae-hee promises that he’s found someone who can fight Dong-man and end his mixed martial arts career, because he’s beaten Dong-man before.
As they wait for their bus home, Seol-hee says to Joo-man that she wishes someone would find them out because she’s nervous lately, what with him getting kissed by a pretty, younger girl. Joo-man dutifully insists that Seol-hee is prettier, but she admits that she feels like his secret mistress, and that she’s dragging him down.
She confesses that sometimes, she wishes he hadn’t gone to college and gotten a good job and was more on her level. Joo-man scoots over and takes her hand, and he promises that if he gets promoted to manager, they’ll tell everyone about their relationship and she can quit.
He says he’ll support her dream of being a power blogger, which is a great career for a manager’s wife. Seol-hee stares as he says, “Once I become manager, let’s do it. Let’s get married.”
Before his fight, Dong-man calls his mom, who fibs that his father also wants to talk to him. She holds out the phone, putting it on speaker so that his dad hears him when Dong-man says not to bother passing the phone to his father.
But he hears his dad’s nervous cough, so he tells his mom to give his dad a message, knowing he’s listening. Softly, he asks for his dad to believe in his son, then he quickly hangs up. Dong-man’s dad says gruffly that there’s no need, because Dong-man will win no matter he does. Awww.
At the last minute, the rookie fighter who was to face Dong-man forfeits, so Dong-man is matched with his own teammate, Byung-joo. Coach Hwang objects since Byung-joo is much more experienced. Byung-joo acts like he’s already won the fight, saying that he’ll go easy on Dong-man.
But Dong-man says he’ll fight Byung-joo, confident that he can win. Adorably, he’s more nervous about taking off his shirt to fight, but Coach promises that the audience won’t see anything (“They’ll just look like two kidney beans!” HAHA). Tak-soo’s coach stops them to tell Dong-man that he’s here today as his fan. Dong-man is taken aback, but Coach Choi seems sincere when he tells Dong-man, “Let me see you fly again.”
When Joo-man and Seol-hee’s bus arrives at their stop, Seol-hee calls Joo-man jagi-ya, a common endearment among couples. Belatedly, they see that Ye-jin was waiting for Joo-man at the stop, and that she heard what Seol-hee said.
Byung-joo makes a dramatic entrance into the stadium, followed by Dong-man. As he approaches the cage, Dong-man passes right by Tak-soo, but they just exchange glares. As required, Dong-man takes off his shirt, and Coach Hwang tells him not to let Tak-soo being in the audience rattle him, and to remember that he possesses the superior skill. Dong-man says that he’s just going to enjoy this, since it’s been so long.
There’s a stir in the audience as Hye-ran shows up, and all the reporters follow her to her seat, asking why she’s here. She says that she’s here to cheer on a fighter, gesturing to Dong-man as he’s introduced.
The fight begins, and Byung-joo aggressively lands several punches and kicks in a row, making Tak-soo smirk. But then Dong-man spots Byung-joo shifting his weight and takes his opportunity, delivering a kick to the side that makes Byung-joo double over. Dong-man executes his signature move, the roundhouse kick, and he lands his foot right into Byung-joo’s face, knocking him out cold.
Tak-soo is stunned to see Dong-man win his debut fight against an experienced fighter in only nineteen seconds. Coach Hwang is so proud that he wonders with tears in his eyes how Dong-man kept this inside for so long. Dong-man lets out a mighty battle roar as his hand is raised and he’s declared the winner.
Coach helps Dong-man put his shirt back on and hugs him, fighting back tears. With reporters calling questions to him about who he is and what his relationship is to Hye-ran, Dong-man heads towards the audience and stands in front of Hye-ran, who looks up at him expectantly.
But he steps right past her and up the stairs, to a small figure in the top row, huddled into a ball with her hands over her ears.
He crouches in front of her, and then reaches out to touch her knee. Ae-ra raises her head, revealing her face streaming with tears. Dong-man asks what she’s doing and tells her that he won, and Ae-ra heaves a giant sigh of relief.
In a wobbly voice, she asks if he really has to do this, because she can’t bear to watch. Looking up at her in wonder, Dong-man just says, “I’m in trouble. Now you look pretty even when you cry.”
Epilogue.
Little Dong-man’s teacher finds him feeding the class rabbits, favoring the pretty one over the ugly one. She tells him that the ugly rabbit will be sad to be left out, saying that the uglier it is, the nicer he should be to it.
Later, Dong-man passes out gum to little Ae-ra, curly-haired Seol-hee, and himself. He has one piece of gum left, and he looks closely at both girls before giving the last piece to Ae-ra. She grins at him, and he reaches out to pat her head like she’s a fluffy little bunny.
COMMENTS
Well, just excuse me while I swoon forever. Hoo boy, when Dong-man decides to turn on the charm, he really goes all-out, doesn’t he? He was all business during that fight and all man afterward, no trace of the dumb jock at all. It was so romantic, the way he knew Ae-ra was in the audience without even seeing her face, and he knew that she needed him to reassure her that he was okay. Seeing him fight really does tear her up inside, but it’s proof of how much she cares about him that she was there to support him anyway, even if she couldn’t actually watch and even though it made her miserable. I’m hoping that Dong-man’s declaration that Ae-ra is pretty when she cries is him finally recognizing and accepting his feelings for her. As cute as they are when in denial, I’m ready to see some truly embarrassing dating now.
I’m happy that Joo-man finally set a goal to marry Seol-hee, though something still feels wrong to me. We’re at the midpoint of the story so it might just be weak writing, but as the rest of the characters are so well-imagined, I can’t help but hope that this is intentional. Their conflicts have been solved too easily, and I worry that something big is about to hit them and truly test their commitment to each other in a way that an annoying admirer hasn’t been able to do. But as strange as it sounds, I think that Joo-man and Seol-hee need something to shake them up, to make them really think about whether this relationship is what they want. I don’t want them to get married because it’s been six years, so why not. I want them to get married because they’ve been through the fire and realized they can’t live without each other.
Tak-soo is getting worrisome—he’s way more concerned about taking out Dong-man before they have an official fight, than just fighting him fair and square. He’s obviously scared of facing Dong-man in the ring because he knows he’ll lose, but I’m getting scared that his tricks and schemes are going to get Dong-man seriously hurt. They already did once before, and people get killed in this sport. Now it looks as though Byung-joo might even have a connection with Tak-soo, which is frightening because he has close access to Dong-man that Tak-soo wouldn’t have otherwise. Luckily, it seems as though Coach Choi really is a decent guy who admires Dong-man’s skill and dedication (loved his little smile when Dong-man won his fight), so I hope that he’ll step up to help if things go pear-shaped.
I wasn’t surprised to learn that Dong-man is Ae-ra’s first love, because we’ve seen the clues in the epilogues going all the way back to their childhood days. But I am surprised that she’s so aware of it, and that even Dong-man knows about Wrist Guy, though not his identity (of course the big moose was there when Ae-ra hurt her wrist, but he’s never been quick enough to put the clues together). Until now, I’ve just been assuming that Ae-ra’s warnings to Dong-man were because she’s experiencing a newfound attraction to him—it never occurred to me that she’s knowingly been in love with him for years. And it’s no wonder that all of Ae-ra’s boyfriends have been disasters… none of them are Dong-man, so she’s never bothered to really look for someone she could love, because she’s already in love. Somehow, this adds a layer to their interactions that changes everything, and it’s the best thing ever.

I wrote my thoughts on the episode right after watching it yesterday night (i'm from europe) so that I wouldn't forget how happy this episode left me..
I LOVED EVERY BIT OF IT!
> I laughed so hard when Ae Ra was practically telling Dong Man that he's her first love, but he's just clueless. His brain is really not meant to think.
> When Dong Man wiped Ae Ra's tears even though he was dating Hye Ran
> Dong Man's last words and sort of confession.
> THE OST! I don't know about you, but the song kinda reminds me the OST that Roy Kim sang for Oh Hae Young Again
> I could go on, but I'd be just listing all the scenes w/ Ae Ra and Dong Man on. Haha
Can't wait to watch the next episode... waaah. Once again, a drama has me waiting impatiently for Monday to come!

When did Ae Ra practically told Dong Man? You can't remember all of the short happening of life. This guy had completely forgotten the Moo-Bin + Bo Ram meet up. Ae Ra was pretty ambiguous. It wasn't right in you face confession at all.
My fav. Moment also is ep 1 school match ver 2.0. Hye Ran wasn't even in the frame.

Thanks for the recap!
-I wasn't sure what was going to happen after AR's confession but I like this realistic touch - the moment passed and things are a little awkward/different now. I'm overall really enjoying the realistic, natural progression to our main couple's romance, especially all the awkward moments (like that breakfast scene!).
-Side note: if I was riding a moped sideways like AR, I would've fallen off right away.
-DM saying "There's a lot of stars today!" when there were literally none was quite possibly my favorite small moment in this episode. I shrieked with laughter.
-OHHH. Wow, so DM was AR's first love. I thought she was only slightly aware of her feelings for him, but this puts a new spin on all of their interactions.
-AR's aegyo to DM's gym-mate was terrifying/hilarious, but that punch was oh-so-satisfying.
-I've gotta say, I'm so glad that YJ finally knows about JM and SH. Her actions were really starting to get scary-stalkerish (if they weren't already). I wanted SH to get enough of a spine to tell YJ herself, but hopefully that sort of character development is still to come.
-My heart broke for AR though. It's satisfying to see DM start to achieve his dreams, but it seems like AR just keeps getting turned down again and again. I really want her to be successful too.

I agree with you completely. This is dealt with so beautifully in the drama...really the moment passed, things became a bit awkward but then they are barreling through as they always have, sticking to each other. Loved this realistic touch that the PD and whole cast and crew could bring up in the drama.

I also like how we don't learn about it so early in the drama and it was well built within the story. So the audience were all misleaded into thinking she's only just developing feelings for him but it was really a one sided crush for so long.

but there were hints tho, like the scene where DM won the taekwondo match in high school and confessed to another girl (although AR was the one who caught his shirt).
She looked like she's about to explode from happiness but then realized she's not the one he's confessing to..
So I guess her "first love" has been there for quite a while.

I hope there is a more satisfying and fitting career waiting for Ae-ra. After all, Dong-man's career path change slightly from taekwondo to MMA fighter. Maybe Ae-ra also needs some small career readjustment from her initial announcer dream.

Though it's pretty cliché, I'm hoping the landlady could somehow end up 'meddling' in Ae ra's career path. I feel like she's their first shipper and her intention towards them both is myterious too.

My first thought was that she should become a radio DJ. It's basically the same job just without the visual ballast and objectification that is apparently going on in Korean news world... and that she also has problems with as she mentioned in a previous episode.

I agree with all of your thoughts. One of my favorite scenes though was when Ae Ra landed that punch on Dong Man's gym partner while giving these biggest doe eyes ever. It was a really cute moment while showing her toughness. Also, I liked the revealing of Dong Man being Ae Ra's first true love. That new fact puts a total spin on the rest of this story. I'm excited to know what happens next and now, I can't wait. Overall, this episode is definitely one of my favorites so far.
These little epilogues into their past are just great. I seriously couldn't even hold my laughter in.

I most enjoyed about that gym scene how Dong-man and coach both knew what was coming the moment she started with the aegyo. That small look of panic on coaches face was hilarious.
Also wasn't it really funny how she made coach carry her bags when she visited the gym. I just love how intimidated he gets around Ae-ra. *gg*

Ae-ra's forced aegyo is seriously so cringey! I love that one of the reasons why you wouldn't wanna hear it–other than the fact that it's so cringey–is because you know she's up to something when you hear it. Ha.
I love Coach-nim and how scared he is of Ae-ra because he thinks she's "crazy." Coach-nim turning into Bag Boy was just so funny!

It makes sense and I actually really like that he was her first love. They've known each other since kids, and DM seems like he has always been totally endearing and adorable. Probably with HR around, plus with him being such a clueless boy, AR couldn't ever have really confessed.
I felt so terrible for AR. I'm not sure if that's how interviews really go in Korea, but I wonder why the HR didn't sieve through the resumes in the first place? It's job hunting season for me and my friends and we don't even get called for interviews most of the time because HR sieves through the resumes and only picks those they're interested in. It makes more sense not to waste the interviewers' time that way, which is exactly what the interviewer said in the episode. Why bother even calling someone down for an interview, only to tell them straight in the face that they're a waste of time? It was completely rude and snobbish.
I like how relatable AR seems. All the other candidates are very well off, and obviously could have spent their time studying abroad/volunteering. AR couldn't have done any of that, because she had to earn money for a living. I think it's a very realistic portrayal of how society is like in general - we expect people to have fantastic specs, but we forget that so many are not privileged enough to have the resources to do all that (study in a prestigious university, learn 1001 talents, volunteer and donate). My heart totally broke when AR said that they're living just as hard as anyone else. She's trying so hard, but she can't seem to succeed.

Re: Ae-ra never confessing. There was also the time in highschool when she went to his match and he asked Bo-ram out, but Ae-ra thought he was talking to her. And then when he wasn't, I think she psyched herself up to never be disappointed like that again. So even when he does swoony things in all the years moving forward, she kept reminding herself that he only sees her as a friend.
Also, I so agree with everything you said about Ae-ra's job interview. I got the impression she had applied before, but this was the first time (in a long time?) that she has gotten an interview. If they weren't going to consider her at all, why did they give her an interview? It wastes everyone's time.

Ooh yes the match, I'd forgotten about that. Plus, afterward she would have forced herself not to do anything about it because HR was always in the picture and she would be disappointed anyways. I can't wait for them to really start a relationship though *u*
Right, I'd gotten the impression she'd been rejected before, so I really wondered what was the point in asking her for an interview and then straight out not even bothering to ask her any questions? It reflects really badly on the company as well.

I agree. Her disappointment at DM asking BR out was deeply felt in that ep. I think since then, she's tried to put up a fort around her heart for fear of being let down and hurt again. Not to mention, she's witnessed all the back-and-forth between DM and HR throughout the years. Maybe she has always thought that she doesn't stand a chance.

I'm wondering the same thing in regards to what happened to Ae-ra at her interview--if that really happens irl in South Korea. I'm from the US and I'm familiar with the same job application/hiring process you've mentioned. While scoring an interview doesn't mean you're hired, it's supposed to be the company's way of saying they're interested in seeing you after seeing your application, resume, cover letter, questionnaire answers, etc., so the fact that she passed round one (which was what, the job application? Okay, so there must've been something you liked about her on paper, right?) and then just be completely disregarded like that at the face-to-face is ridiculous.

Totally agree about the job thing. My manager and I were conducting interviews for a position, and we most definitely weeded out the résumés that weren't up to par. That interviewer was very harsh in her words, and SHE was the reason that both of their time are being wasted. And yes, oftentimes you can only get such specs if you've got the resources. Otherwise, paying your bills has higher priority than getting all the credentials.

YES DONG MAN, FINALLY! Although it wasn’t a clear confession, DM is starting to acknowledge and express his feelings!! And he wasn’t event stuttering or looking away *HAPPY TEARS* I think the whole incident 10 years ago broke DM’s confidence and spirit, but that win ultimately restored it! His confidence, in himself, his skill, and (ultimately) his feelings for Ae Ra, is back. He just looked completely different when he got out of that ring, like he was reborn. And I’m so excited, because he’ll not only continue fighting for his dream, but more importantly, he’ll (FINALLY) take the leap and fight for Ae Ra! GYAAA, THE ENDING WAS TOO PERFECT.
On another note, that interview broke my heart. But as sad as it was, it seemed necessary for AR’s character, just like DM’s first loss. DM’s loss taught him to be patient - as good as he was, he still needed to train and wait until he was ready. And same with AR, she’s only starting, and the world she’s entering is crazy brutal and competitive. Although I don’t doubt she’ll make it, I think that right now she needs to develop her confidence, and make everyone around her listen. She’s such a fighter, but sometimes she loses that spunk when it comes to chasing her dream. That interview may have been a hard hit, but knowing AR, she’ll get back up. She may not have shined today (or maybe there’s a twist in the next EP) but when she finally makes it, all those before her will be completely wiped out.
PS
DM walking pass his ex was AMAZING. Girl, you are nothing to him, so just leave. BYE. If my calculations are correct, we’ll all be very happy next week!

YES, I didn't mind so much that Hye-ran was there because I knew that she'd attract the crowd/reporters enough to bring the spotlight back on Dong-man. He didn't really needed it, though, because he knocked out the dude in 19 seconds! Brah. I was so happy and proud of him when he did that and the look on everyone's face was just priceless. Anyways, I loved that Dong-man paid no attention to Hye-ran (I think he'll have to ignore her a few more times and straight up reject her a couple more times for her to really understand, though) and that he went straight to Ae-ra after hugging a teary-eyed Coach-nim. Hehe. Poor Ae-ra was so scared, thinking Dong-man was the one that got KO'd.
You're right about Ae-ra! I, too, have no doubt that when her time comes and she gets her moment, she'll also KO in her field, too!

Like AR, I couldn't bear to watch the fight scene at all (I really can't watch fights!) and had to read the last part of the recap before I let myself watch it. I just couldn't stand watching DM getting beaten up. T_T
And ahhhh this episode really makes up for E7. By E7 I was contemplating dropping it to watch it more casually rather than actively catching episodes every week (midway through and I wasn't really feeling it) but this episode blew it out of the ballpark for both AR and DM. I love how she came to watch even though she knew she really hated to watch fights. I love how DM totally walked past HR, because she's out of his life now. Ahhhhh! *u*
Side note: Why is Tak Su always made out to be a lousy fighter, if he's been the reigning champion for so long? Did he pay his way through all his fights?

Let's hope this show foregoes the Kdrama cliche of noble idiocy and Dong Man and Ae Ra can now be together undisrupted and focus on reaching their dreams together! So many things that I loved in today's episode:
1. The scene where AR puts the purse between her and DM, and DM says his back can't feel the small things..I laughed out loud sooo hard! man that was epic!
2. That flashback scene where PHR kept on watching while DM goes out and wipes off the tears from AR's face, it's as thoguth PHR was not even there...nobody registered her presence in that moment, only DM and AR were real.
3. DM putting on perfume and AR lip tint for each other indicating there are quite conscious about each other's presence in more-than-friends-way.
4. DM practically getting speechless with every outfit AR wears, finally putting up the outburst saying everything looks good on her, she looks pretty in everyone of the dresses! AAh love.
5. DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE LAST SCENE. Oh my my my! I broke the replay button Beanies! That was so damn HOT!!! phew still fanning myself. DM bending and sitting down and saying that he is in trouble because now even when AR cries, she looks pretty...who would have thought such weird lines could actually be so SEXY!!! Aaaaaah
Now sth that bothered me, JM and SH. I don't why but I agree with Lollypip here and think that something is off....at this point even though JM said "Let's get married when I become a manager" I still find it very forced on JM part. This feels quite uncomfortable and to be honest a pit pathetic.
p.s. How cute was that epilogue?!

I totally died that "Febreze" was his type of perfume, hah! I also love how DM burst out with "you look pretty in everything!" and caused everyone to start laughing. KJW really does look perfect in every outfit.
I lovedddd that last scene too, PSJ is strangely hot in everything he does, ahh! It was really like as though they were the only 2 people in the world right there and then, and it was lovely.
Honestly, did JM even apologize for "kissing" Yejin? I know he didn't initiate it, but I wish he could at least apologize to SH for not rejecting YJ straight out. He's as good as leading her on this way. I just have to say though that YJ is a little... obnoxious. Going around calling someone her boyfriend and sneaking photos is a little stalker-ish and if it were Jooman doing it he would have been called out for sexual harassment.

now that you mention JM and SH... you know on that scene, right after JM asked SH to get married once he's a manager, Snow White's "someday my prince will come" was played as they zoomed in to SH's face and I'm just.. wow what a bad sign.
This show has always been about proving that living a life like the ones in fairytales would never bring you satisfaction/happiness, and that in real life, you fight for your own dream instead of relying on anyone to make it for you.
Just like how AR realized she hated being brought home 'by a prince on a white horse'.
So yeah, I just feel like that would be signs that JM and SH's relationship would take a bad big blow... just as Lollypip mentioned. But let's just hope for the best. Til next week, fingers crossed!

AWWW so Dongman is Aera's first love after all! i love all the embarassing cringey interactions between them so much, considering they're best friends to soon-to-be lovers, it felt so realistic.
Another thing that got me in the heart was Aera's interview. It's heartbreaking, and I fully understand that situation. It resonates so much to real life. Young generations felt like they have all the time in the world, but sadly not all they do can reflect in a mere resume. All hardwork, time spent, for some people are done just to survive living, making money that is. So when the interviewer treat Aera like that, my heart's crushed and i was sooo upset. Because if only she knew that Aera is no less talented than other candidates with more fortunate financial condition.
I'm glad that this drama is good with balancing cute with heartfelt heartwrenching moments that young people can relate to. Now let the romance be in full bloom shall we!

WHatshername bad girl wanted to humiliate her and the woman in the panel was her friend. So either they called her, and mean-girl made sure it became a nightmare, or they only called her to be able to nightmare her.
Now this interview was obviously straight-on mean, but I have seen more realistic and exactly that hopeless depictions of job interviews, where nobody was trying to be mean - they just were. Romance is a Bonus Book, I believe, is one of them.

I really like how we didn't just jump straight into a love confession. They're admitting there's something and set feeling their way, which is awesome. I can't wait until DM finds out he's AR's first love. Obtuse but loveable.
I didn't like JM's 'proposal'. He should want to marry her with or without the promotion. Something's still weird about them. I don't think it's lazy writing.
Was JM really friends with them as kids? I think that's part of why he seems the odd one out. SH, AR, and DM have been together forever, but that claw game scene made me think that JM didn't come into the picture until high school.

JM met DM when DM went to Seoul for high school for Taekwondo ~ JM joined the group after that it seems.
You're right, you get a sense that JM is the odd one out, and I'm really not sure what to make of his proposal. He seems tired all the time and like he's just trying to get through, the first spark we've seen him have as an adult was the victory dance about the kimchi job.

It irked me alot when he said he'll marry her when he gets the promotion, not that I'd like to doubt his abilities. However you've already been together six years, how much longer must he make the girl wait?
I keep feeling like one excuse after another keeps appearing. If you've already decided after so long together, why not just make it official despite all the forces against it.

I don't wanna think that JM is only staying because he is thankful for SH for helping him through hard times. Just like how AR supported her ex.

"when Dong-man decides to turn on the charm, he really goes all-out, doesn't he?"
Yes, he does! I kept replaying the ending scene. His eyes, his voice, the way he spoke to Ae-ra when he realized his feelings. Ok, I have to stop.
But I'm gonna say this again, Park Seo-joon is a great actor. He totally sold that character, a lovable dimwit who's clueless that he's totally clueless, especially when he's trying to use his brain..hahaha

he said in one interview that DM character is close to himself in real life and he act as natural as he is on the show. I can imagine PSJ being playful just like DM ? but this guy says he's straightforward in real life. He will tell the girl he likes her if he really likes her. ?

Watching Hwarang and then all the interactions behind-the-scenes and the interviews with all the boys, it's very clear that everyone loves and admires Park Seo-joon - like he naturally assumes the role of leader without ever asking for it. When you see a man totally and naturally admired by other men, that's a truly worthy man! I'm in the world of aviation history and around fighter pilots all the time. Park Seo-joon reminds me of that kind of man. Ego-less brawn, gentle but tough, and SO smart in a world-wise way but emotionally innocent. He's an amazing actor. No doubt about it!

Am I dead yet? Because this episode was SO good content-wise, laugh-out loud funny and such a squeefest! (Plus shirtless Park Seo-joon...godammit you gorgeous beast. And he was SHY, lmao.)
I couldn't really fathom what DM's reaction to the confession would be(or how I'd want him to react), but how he handled it was so classically him...with absolute clumsiness and cluelessness. Which was actually endearing (seriously, what an adorable dimwit) and funny.
One of the highlights for me in this episode was our OTP's "flirting":
I love DM's hilarious robotic voice when he gets flustered and doesn't know what to say. "Whoaa, there are a lot of stars tonight" HAHAHA
The running gag on AR's boobs just kills me: "my back nerves can't detect something so small." I died. Needless to say that the febreeze stunt got me rolling on the floor.
But even through their not-so smooth flirting game and budding romance, I love that they are still essentially friends who are loyal to each other and care deeply for one another...like AR beating up that douchebag sunbae at the gym, and DM not pushing AR to attend his match despite it being important to him.
I was so glad that DM finally got his moment to shine (and ignore Whatsherface Hye-ran while doing it). That fight was lit and so satisfying, and I like that DM's confidence is now well-placed. His coach bursting with pride was just so sweet.
In contrast, I'm all heartbroken by AR whose dream continues to elude her. But I find her story poignant in a realistic way, given this day and age. There probably are lot of 20-somethings who are passionate and talented, but struggling because they got no connections, and their resumes aren't as shiny or scream money. I like that the show is taking her trajectory slowly, it isn't trivializing the issue by magically solving the problem...because unlike DM, she has no prior experience in her field.
About our second OTP, I like that Sul-hee seems like she is growing a spine and finally sticking it to JM. I also like that JM FINALLY made his decision to marry SH and I hope he sticks with it. But I like it less that SH berates JM (yes it's valid) about not being upfront with that intern, YET she herself isn't straightforward with her when she gets the chance. I understand she might not have wanted to burst the intern's bubble, because she sympathizes with her, but what good comes out of it? I'm kind of glad that the Intern kept wedging herself between them, because now they actually have to confront the issue straight-on. And are they really not reveaIing their relationship simply because of work? I find it a stupid reason, they've been together for 6 years! (Or is it not a thing for co-workers to date in SK?) I do hope that their relationship works out, so they can go on double-dates with DM & AR.
Overall, I feel like this episode was a combination of all the things I want from this show, done right. It was the best episode yet (imo). My...

I agree with LollyPip regarding Joo-man and Seol-hee, something feels off.
I still get the feeling that this couple, six years in, doesn't know what it is that still keeps them together anymore. ..... Sometimes they strike me as a couple who is together more out of habit than anything else.

I did love Seol Hee stepping up the "this man is mine!" game this week. From holding his bag, to surprise kisses and butt grabs. I don't think that's enough to keep them together, I rather want Seol Hee to walk out and figure out what she wants without him.

Hmm...I think you can only date for so long, so yes, something's got to change, the next step is either get married or break up. It is so hard to tell, I think they are at times so sweet together, but their relationship is too affected/disrupted by outside factors (mainly work). I've said this before, but number 1 is they really should declare themselves as a couple, that would already solve a lot of their problems. Hopefully by Ye Jin finding out, please don't make up excuses and just be honest, they can go public as a couple. I understand Joo Man wanting to wait until he becomes a manager so he can better support her, but hey dude, you can't make your girl forever. Good timing for you may not be good timing for her. By the time he becomes a manager she may just not be around. Is he an only son? I can understand the pressure he must feel of he is, but he has shown he can stand up to his family. So yeah, not sure why he's hiding SH. Maybe he read a manual to success that says single men will move up the ladder faster?! Why are they even working together?! If they can't go public then maybe one of them should change companies. They are just like AR and DM in a way, we can see what they need to do, but they can't. People just get it together! I think that's how I feel most of the time watching this show! Argh!

I know their relationship seems frustrating, but to switch from life long friends to lovers is a BIG DEAL. Who makes the first move? What if you get rejected? Your relationship as friends would sour. What if you become a couple and things don't work out? Your relationship as friends would sour.
I remember a male friend I had all through high school. We were best buddies. When I graduated high school I moved away and did not remain in regular contact with him. Time passed and after graduating from grad school I went back home for a visit. I was lucky there was a high school reunion planned that week. I was married and I had just found out I was pregnant, and he was engaged. He picked me up to go to the reunion and he told me had he had felt all those years, and the only thing that he had left to do was tell me how much my friendship had meant to him. That was the reason he never said anything. It was a very sweet moment.
I went back home, had my child, nursed my husband trough cancer two times, and eventually became a widow. Came back home and just stayed away from everybody for a long time. I lost touch.
But just last week my brother came across my friend, and he was so happy talking about our friendship to him. Honestly, I am happy he never confessed in HS, because I think those happy memories we shared were much better.

I have to agree with you ma'am. Shifting from friends to lovers is really a big deal coz you need to take risks. The "what ifs" if you pursue it and the comfort from being just friends are something to be weight in. In reality these things are really being considered that's why bffs to lovers relationship is a long process. Thank you for sharing your story.
I just wonder if your HS friend is also married now? ? There's always a second chance of love i think. I hope you'll find it soonest ?

Agree on how big of a deal turning from friends to lovers is. I had a similar experince of having a very close male friend all through my uni years. We went everywhere together, and eventually I fell for him first. I didn't tell him for fear that our relationship as friends would fall apart. The foolish me would rather stay friends with him instead of risking our ongoing relationship.
Well things happened, and he ended up falling for one of my best friends instead. And our friendship didn't make it through after all. After he got married, he finally found out (from someone else) about my feelings years back. We silently fell apart and things became more awkward, even after 18 years. I still keep in touch (Facebook) with his wife, but he is no longer in my close circle of friends. I still think of him fondly, but I don't see how our relationship would get better when neither of us made the move to ammend it.
My point is, changing the relationship status from friends to lovers is a huge step, but I wish I told him sooner, back when we used to be friends. It's okay if he rejected me then, because at least I could be honest with myself. Thus, I hope Dong Man & Aera would be brave enough to at least be honest to themselves and tell each other how they feel, regardless of the consequences.

I totally agree with the big riskiness of friends turning into lovers. In my much younger days, I might have made a mistake but a few years ago, when I was hanging out with a long-time male friend and our buddies, he and I flashed on each other for the first time in ten years. After more than a few round of drinks, he walked me home and we fell into one mad passionate kiss, then broke apart laughing while hanging onto each other. At almost the same time, we both said, "No! This can't be!" And I dug deeply into my heart -way above that more irresponsible place - and told him, "I'd rather be your friend for life than your lover for one night". And he said, "Yes! Me too!" We laughed and hugged and said goodnight. That was ten years ago and we have rejoiced in our friendship around all our friends. He finally found his perfect woman and got married for the first time at 45. We all love her to pieces. He counseled me through a five year boyfriend and the messy break-up and we all laugh, laugh, laugh and play together. I'm so glad the lifelong friendship became more important than a possible romance. If I'd been 20 I would have blown it for sure.

Such a heartwarming outcome, thank you for sharing. I think it's true, in a way, you have to decide what is more important, there can be such a fine line between friendship and romance, where do you draw the line?! Is it opportunities missed, or saved? In college I was one of the boys, now all the boys are married and I'm still single. So no friendship turned to romance here. Sometimes I do wonder but hey, life moves on. Maybe things happen for a reason or I just missed on opportunities. Oh well, I'll just dream of Park Seo Joon!

Aww, this is so sweet! I am very sorry about your husband, and your a very strong mother! Yeah, I get what you mean. A very strong friendship is very hard to find which is why a lot of people just do not confess to their best friend that they are in love with. They do not want to lose a friend or the memories that they had with them. Also, just because you both feel the same way and decided to be in a relationship, there is no guarantee that it would work out. And at the end, all there is left is regret.
Good Luck to you though! Fighting!

Dong-man is truly the definition of brawn over brain, he's so dense about Ae-ra's feelings towards him that I'm surprised he was so quick in his realisation of his own feelings towards her. Their friendship is so cute that I can't wait to see their eventual relationship! I'm sure it'll be as balanced and as delightful as what we see right now, if not even more so.

I wonder if it's also a maturity thing, as they're not kids anymore. So in an adult world there's alot more to consider and it changes your perspective on people. JM going through all those trouble and heartbreak with Hye-Ran most likely opened his eyes so he could see Ae-Ra.

Jooman & SeolHee: I wonder why there should be a condition for them to get married. Why does it hinge on him being manager? Does it matter even if you love the person you are marrying? Why is JooMan dictating the terms of how things will be when they get married? Doesnt SeolHee get a right to choose her own path? SeolHee need to speak up and demand to be treated equal in that relationship.
DongMan: I love how that fight is a big blow to both TakSu and DM's cocky opponent. DongMan's win cemented his prowess and crushed his opponent's pride. I loved TakSu's face when he realizes he is deadmeat. Run coward Run. Your schemes are no match to DM's talent and skill. Can't wait for DM to crush that jerk in the ring.
Also How sweet is DM's father's absolute faith in his talent. I just wish those two would just have their moment and talk it out.
DongMan and AeRa At the start of the show, i was laughing so hard at DM's cluelessness when AR was talking about her first love. And AR was equally dense when DM was acting all flustered when she asked him how she looks. And fairy landlady has to butt in to give her two cents.
How amazing was that scene between AeRa and DongMan. I was crying so hard with AeRa. And I was squealing with delight with what DongMan said. I love this two so much!!! Just date already then get married have lots of kids.
Also that look on HyeRan's face..priceless. read the memo lady. Get out of the picture. He. Is. Not. Interested.

I am asking exactly the same questions regarding Joo-man and Seol-hee! Even if the intern is annoyingly aggressive in her pursuit of Joo-man, her cluelessness is similar to other characters in the show and it partly stems from Joo-man not being honest about his relationship with Seol-hee (which I am still perplexed by the flimsy rational.) I would really rather that she finding out the truth from Joo-man than from the accidental reveal at the end of this episode.
Joo-man is the one who deserves to be kimchi slapped!

Like Seol-hee said, she's not rude like in most dramas. I don't like her but I also don't hate her. if Joo-man told her that he is already in a relationship even without admitting that it's with SH should have been enough reason for the girl to keep her distance.
