Jo Jung-seok gets a soul transplant for fantasy criminal drama Two Cops

After almost a year’s hiatus from dramaland, Jo Jung-seok (Jealousy Incarnate) is considering a return in the supernatural mystery romance Two Cops. It’s centered around an upstanding detective who is committed to fighting for justice until one day the soul of a con artist trespasses into his body and decides to stay. (Hmmm… this sounds eerily like a gender reverse version of Jo Jung-seok’s Oh My Ghostess, and that was amazing.)

According to the latest reports, he’ll be playing the man with one body housing two souls with very different personalities. He’s originally a detective in the violent crimes unit at the Yeongdeungpo District. A dedicated cop through and through, he won’t even take off his worn-out sneakers at a funeral ceremony, just so that he could chase a criminal down at a moment’s notice.

A macho man, he stops knives with his bare hands, and makes women passing by on the street look twice. His character, while almost always serious, has an awkward but endearing sense of humor; he’s inflexible in his morals and other principles in his life, but has the warmest smile.

So when the spirit of a lazy swindler ends up residing inside him, there’s bound to be mischief, especially because there’s romance involved. The woman he (they?) fall for is a prickly, feisty reporter, and casting is now underway for the role.

Two Cops is based on rookie writer Byun Sang-soon’s winning script in last year’s KBS criminal miniseries scriptwriting competition. The drama itself is being considered at MBC though, and is looking to broadcast in the fall.

I'm actually happy it's on MBC, yes their ratings are a bit low but they seem to be more willing to be experimental than the other public broadcasts

FANTASY + CRIMINAL DRAMA + JO JUNG SEOK = I FEEL LIKE IN HEAVEN!! SUCH A GOOD BATCH OF DRAMAS THIS YEAR

Hmm maybe I should be a bit worried since it's a MBC drama and there's a rookie writer

The last time I heard of a rookie writer at MBC was Shopping King Louie though, and that will always have a place in my heart.

You're right! So many good dramas this year!

Oh, I am here for this. I loved him so much in Oh My Ghostess. Jo Jung Seok is such a good actor, this role sounds like it was made for him. I'm hoping that the actress they choose to play alongside him will be able to match him in acting ability. Very frustrating when an amazing actor/actress is paired with someone that is only so-so.

he is one actor that can raise the level of any actress just by his awesome acting-you know-like bringing her level up with his!

This. True! He's a phenomenal actor himself, and what I love is that he really does work with his leading lady to create a wonderful balance. Some people just steal the show or are obviously more talented than their co-star, and while JJS is lucky to have worked with talented people, you don't necessarily think, "Oh, JJS's just stealing the show" or "[leading lady] isn't quite up to snuff/matching his caliber." Goodness, I rambled. Anyway -- I'm excited to have him JJS back on my screen!

That does sound like a somewhat lazy ghost that can't even posses a person right...This sounds like crazy fun even more having JJS as the lead as he is brilliant in comedy...Hope he will have a actress on par with him acting wise...This now became a top priority on my watch list thanks to JJS...

OMG yes sounds like another version of the Jekyll/Hyde story...I wanted to watch the Hyun Bin drama with this type of story but everyone claims it's so bad.

Anyway I'm currently watching Kill Me Heal Me and loving it for that aspect of the story.

Oh believe me, that drama is bad. I don't think I've ever seen a drama that I would call trash, but Hyde, Jekyll, Me is deserving of that descriptor. I don't know what the writer was thinking with that, but the entire romance in that drama is disgusting.

Yessss!

Radiant Office and currently airing Lookout are both written by rookie writers. RO had some fresh ideas and a good slice of life drama. Lookout is also doing well - the drama itself and the rating also keeps increasing from epi 1. I don't really have a problem with a rookie writer for modern drama because so far it meets my expectation.

Crossing my fingers to see this drama does well.MBC has been steadily to give us different kind of drama although not high rated, so I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully he will get a female partner who is on par with him.

Oh oh! I like this idea! I would love to see Kim Seul-gi. Plus she often is a secondary lead or supporting character in dramas (at least the ones I've seen), so I'd love to see her as a main lead in something.

Considering how disappointed she was about not being able to kiss him in Oh My Ghostess, that'll be a dream come true for her! Haha. She said he told her he'd love to work with her again in the future, so, that'll be fun.

Ooh this drama sounds fun. I would love to see JJS in a new drama and I could totally imagine him in this role. I was reminded of his character in OMG where he had a cocky personality, but also had some funny, awkward moments.

"Mystery romance" drama though. Wonder what the main mystery will be. I really want a show that can develop both sides well too.

Yeay!! Best news of today in kdramaland!! Really love his acting especially his eyes acting and "elastic" face. Him being a detective is good enough to watch.. having multiple personalities because of spirit of a lazy swindler.. that's incredible! Multiple layers in personality of the main lead.. He surely can nail it. Really can't hardly wait for the drama to come to my screen :)

This sounds like a great premise. I'm already looking forward to the shenanigans.

Why is there animosity against rookie writers and MBC?

Lookout has been a fantastic ride so far and Radiant Office had a nice slice of life concept. Angry Mom was also the result of a script writing contest and it is a fantastic drama with a strange concept, which turned out to be great.

Is it just me or does it seem like the female role is tailor-made for Seo Hyun Jin?

But Yay Yay Yay to Jo Jung Seok back in dramaland! I literally can't think of a part that he can't play. He's always brings his roles to life in a way that one can't help but love his characters, no matter how assy they are. I mean, Lee Hwa Shin should have been one of the most terrible leads to ever inhabit dramaland, yet JJS made him so wonderful and sympathetic, but somehow kept that core arrogance. Same to his Chef in Oh My Ghostess, though to a lesser degree. That takes skill. (I'll stop gushing now.) And EARNEST BOT. Oh my God, I loved that character so much! So earnest. I'm still in denial over that ending... (OK, I'll really stop now.)

Lol, he's actually technically only been gone a little over 6 months (or is that just indicative of how long it took me to let Lee Hwa-shin go?), but it definitely feels like it's been a year!

Jo Jung-seoooooook!!! ?

Aw man, this one sounds like fun, already! The detective role sounds intense and eeep @ he stops knives with his bare hands!!! I haaaaaaate it when characters do that! I can totally see Jo Jung-seok being both a righteous detective and a sleazy conman, so I'm all for it, but I don't really like the sound of having a negative soul in his body because of Oh My Ghostess! Sung-jae! Gah, please don't let this spirit be a murderous one!

I'm excited for the casting of the female lead!

This sound so right for Jo Jung-seok. He's such a dedicated actor I think he could pull of both aspects of the role with the realism, intensity and nuance it would require...because he's AMAZING. I'm loving the reporter casting suggestions everyone is whirling out. <3

I'm not really into either lazy con artist characters or body possession, so this premise doesn't do it for me. However, I've been proven wrong before about shows that initially sounded unappealing to me but turned out awesome, so I'm going to keep an open mind for now.
