[Staff Spotlight] Get to know HeadsNo2

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

I could explain it, but then it wouldn’t be fun anymore. Maybe I have an extra brain fetus, who knows? Let the legend live on.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

This is a real chicken-egg situation, because I have a goldfish memory and can’t remember which one came first. It was either Full House or A Love to Kill, because I was super into Rain at the time. I loved Full House for the contract relationship and just how different it was (to newbie me at the time), and A Love to Kill for being so epically dramatic and so, so epically addicting. I’ve loved a good melo ever since.

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

I always liked to do odd, creative work, so I initially started out (back in college) doing odd jobs for theaters that included hair and makeup design, and when I started to take pictures of my work, I realized that the makeup would look better with better quality photos. So I started to focus on that, and it sort of accidentally morphed into a photography career that had me published multiple times internationally. I absolutely loved creating dreamlike, visceral shots with my models. I still do shoots when I have the time, but there seems to be less and less of that stuff floating around these days! I haven’t had many jobs because I started working here not long after college, which I’m only saying so that I don’t sound like an aimless wanderer.

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

There was a guy I knew who was getting engaged and told me that if I just said the word, he’d call it off. I didn’t say the word, because I didn’t like him. I still get love letters to this day, so maybe people really don’t forget their first loves.

What’s your favorite drama that you recapped?

This is probably going to be a weird answer, but I kind of think it’s… Dr. Jin? I know it was a terrible drama, but I was fairly new at the time and this amazing thing happened: Hardly anyone was reading the recaps, and I was kind of miserable with such a dud, so I decided that I had to make the recaps fun for me, if no one else. I started to write like I didn’t have an audience, adding whatever observations and jokes came to mind, and I think it was around Episode 11 that all of a sudden readers/commenters popped out of the woodwork, having heard legend (I still don’t know how) of the craziness that was going on in the recaps. So it turned from an initially bad experience into this amazing thing where I got to have so much fun with the readers and really discover my writing voice, which I’ll always, always be thankful for. Maybe I got known around these parts for ending up with duds, but at least if I end up with a dud, I know the readers will be with me and that we’ll all have a good time. I love you, Beanies!

What drama genres do you especially like?

Sageuk, sageuk, sageuk. I love a good epic sageuk, with Chuno, Tree With Deep Roots, and Six Flying Dragons being, to me, the gold standard of fusion sageuk. But since everything can’t be a sageuk, I like really dark stories—you know, dark like my soul.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

Oh my God, medical dramas. I just can’t. I truly don’t understand the appeal. The only medical drama I’ve ever liked was Beautiful Mind, but I think that was because it was heavily skewed in Jang Hyuk’s favor. Otherwise I don’t necessarily gravitate toward high school shows and super poppy rom-coms.

What drama character would you want to be?

If I could be a boy, I’d be Mad Mireu from White Christmas, because he was just so effin’ cool. If I could be a girl, I’d be Nam Da-jung from Liar Game, because she was surrounded by super smart hot men.

What was your major in school?

Political Science. I actually don’t regret it at all because it taught me how to analyze things critically and craft written arguments. I had some of my papers published in college, so I think that’s what helped lead me to writing and editing professionally.

What’s a random skill you have?

Well, I ride horses, although there was that time I fell off and almost died while recapping Age of Feeling (which maybe was a blessing in disguise?). Otherwise I’m known as a walking WebMD: All of the paranoia, with none of the annoying googling.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

Mad Max: Fury Road is definitely a movie I can watch and re-watch endlessly, it’s just such a perfectly executed film. Naming a favorite TV show seems way tougher, so I’m going to cheat and name a few: Deadwood, Carnivale, Twin Peaks (and the new sequel of it, because I’m obsessed with David Lynch and strong, substantial, visionary directing), Community (#sixseasonsandamovie), and the first season of True Detective, which is hands-down the best television I’ve ever watched.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

Won Bin, and I’d use the hour solely to convince him that acting is still a thing he should maybe consider doing again sometime someday in the not-too-distant future or also kind of now since the clock is ticking and we’re all just on that long, inexorable march toward that most final of curtain calls. Y’know, just a thought.

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing? (Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, or sloth.)

Hmm, this is a tough one. Maybe greed, because I want to accomplish lots of things and never want to give up one thing for another, enough to where “Died of FOMO” would probably be written on my tombstone.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

If White Christmas and Basketball had a mutant baby, it would immediately die from congenital birth defects. The end.

HeadsNo2~ It was so amazing to feel that shift in your recaps when you locked on to your writing voice, I remember taking note of it at the time! You could start to feel your personality come through and that is part of what makes DB so fun, it really feels as though we are just listening to our friends dissect and gab about the crazy on our screens!! All the duds you've been dealt~ sometimes if I'm watching a dud drama and you aren't recapping it... I feel a little like something is missing! ;) Your humor and insights are always appreciated.

More interestingly, how did you three (JB, GF and you) meet? Was it just through this site? Is the story deserving of another feature? I consider you founders and creators of this wonderful happy place. Bow.

one thing i think we are in the same road. i really don't like medical drama. I don't know. I'm fine with blood, and seeing someone is dying in a war movie or sageuk. but i just can't stand it when they show it in medical drama i don't know why. lol... and there must be so many of them. no matter how good they are. thanks i don't want to watch it.

Hi HeadsNo2! ? your recaps. Thanks for entertaining us! I thought the name came from standardized testing pencils and the description "head of the class". Only No.2 lead pencils used/recognized on test sheets for machine grading. You must have been an excellent test taker or student.

Thank you for telling us about you. You have very different drama tastes from mine so I never end up reading a lot of your recaps. But when I do your wit and comments are memorable.

I might pop by the Dr Jin recaps as well just to read what you wrote. I avoid sageuks like the plague. There is never any good ending for everybody in that genre.

Heads is my favorite recapper because her hobbies are similar with me, kdrama and photography and I like her recapping style. I'm even more surprised that she's graduated from Political Science.. I graduated from International Relations and my academic title is Bachelor of Political Science so yeah that's one more reason to love Heads!

Your recaps are still my favorite! Maybe it's our twin soul thing of loving Rain and Tree With Deep Roots. It was so great to meet you at the anniversary party in LA. That happy photo is on my bulletin board!

I followed your Jackpot recaps which were wonderful. And Won Bin---tell me how that conversation goes if you ever have it, because I think he's perfectly happy being universally loved and not in any acting capacity, at least I would. I read somewhere that he was your typical rural farm boy, off to the big city to act and support his family, and he accomplished his goal, so is now happily reaping what he sowed. But to be a fly on the wall in that room with you would be entertaining to say the least!
