The star-crossed lovers of tvN’s Bride of the Water God 2017

Well, if nothing else, I can certainly count on this show to bring plenty of pretty. We’ve got another short teaser out for tvN’s upcoming fantasy romance Bride of the Water God 2017, and it’s just as moody and beautiful as the first one. I’m really hoping the colors in these teasers make it into the actual show ‘cause they make these scenes look gorgeous.

There’s nothing in the teaser that reveals anything about the actual story, but we see Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) and Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) catching each other’s eye on either side of a fish tank, a la Romeo + Juliet. How Baz Lurhmann of you, Show. I half-expected “Kissing You” to come on, but the Ghibli-esque background music is lovely, too. Nam Joo-hyuk, who plays the titular water god, then goes, “I’ve waited a long time for you. My servant,” to which Shin Se-kyung replies, “My god.” *facepalm*

Okay. So, I get that her being his “servant” is part of the plot, but the moment he called her that in the teaser I felt like I got ice water thrown on me when I was happily enjoying the dreamy atmosphere. Maybe it was the presentation of it that threw me off, because it almost seems like his line was supposed to be swoony or romantic. Anyway, I’m willing to turn a blind eye because I adore fantasy dramas and it sounds like the supernatural world in Bride of the Water God is well thought-out and intricate with a deity hierarchy and everything, which I’m excited to learn more about. I also just want Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) back on my screen in a good drama.

Im Joo-hwan’s hotel CEO character will play the other human in the love pentagon that also consists of our two leads, and Gong Myung’s (Individualist Ji-young) wind god, and Krystal’s (She’s So Lovable) minor water deity character. That’s a lot of criss-crossed wires, but is it bad that I’m kind of looking forward to the angsty merry-go-round of longing stares that’s bound to happen?

Bride of the Water God 2017 will premiere on July 3 in the Monday-Tuesday slot, after currently airing Circle ends its run.

Is it just me or I haven't really settled down in seeing NJH with another actress who's not LSK?

I know, especially after the dating announcement. I was such a huge fan of weightlifting fairy and thought maybe this drama would lack the chemistry because she's not LSK.

I agree, though I am really hoping those two have amazing chemistry just so Nam Joo Hyuk can prove my doubts about his acting wrong once and for all. Weightlifting Fairy was amazing and he did amazing, but I've always had a nagging worry it was just because of his chemistry with LSK. With this drama, hopefully I'll be able to officially add him on my list of actors I can rely on to always put on a wonderful performance. Maybe I'll just rewatch weightlifting fairy again though in the mean time. Their chemistry is no joke. Adorable couple.

Yes, I got this feeling as well. However, if the Korean language version of it might be better than the translated English one, who knows?

Just to confess, I almost laughed when I heard the female lead's voice. Somehow I think I expected her voice to be more goddess-like. It's not her fault though.. just I think the teaser would have been much better with another kind of voice.

As a native korean speaker... It sounds just as weird in korean lol. "Jong" literally means servant/slave and doesn't have any positive connotations.

Wow thanks for the clarification. How nice to know that there are native Korean beanies here so they can answer some of your Korean-related questions. And Ahem.. if Jong doesn't have any positive connotation.. well.. how can I put this.. this teaser gives a strange vibe indeed, perhaps? :P

This drama starts on my birthday! I will take that as a promising sign?

I am nervous about the modern take on this adaption ... I just don't know how this story will flow. I guess only time will tell! I used to read this manhwa when I was still in school. If it's anything like the original, I'll have to keep in mind to brace myself for the melodrama. I'm also expecting that the nobile idiocy rating will be off the charts for this one heh ... oh dear!

I was thinking the same exact thing about the noble idiocy. Hopefully that just leads to a lot of angst ridden, sexy, wanting stares from Nam Joo Hyuk.

There a lot of things going through my mind right now:
- such a pretty teaser.
- the dialogue was funny and unpredictable so i liked it. I am hoping a lot of antics between a god and a reluctant servant. I am sure our heroin will try her best to get out of this situation.
- i am concerned about the whole pentagon thing. I am not a fan of such complicated relation ships. Last time i watched such a drama was reply 1988 and my heart is till scarred from SLS.
- am i the only one who thinks this hairstyle doeasnt suit nam joo hyuk? May be thats just me i am not a huge fan of long hair on any man :/ i hope it grows on me i really wish to enjoy this drama.

Oh, and now that you mention him I feel like Lee Soo-hyuk would have been a better fit for Habaek than Nam Joo-hyuk. I mean if they're going to cast model turned actors whose acting isn't exactly stellar, Lee Soo-hyuk would have been better. He even has the aura of otherworldly godliness.

I expect this to be a bit old fashion, you know, where men are in control and everything, which is not always bad if all the woman isnt completely timid. We might see some mutiny going on. But I'll keep my hope down coz Shin Se-Kyung always play the type of women that annoy me.

Six Flying Dragons was hee first performance that I watched, I enjoyed her there largely because Boon-yi is such an amazing character and her chemistry with Yoo Ah-in is unbelievable then. While I was waiting for new episodes of SFD, I went and watched Fashion King and honestly I didn't think she was that awful. I wanted to watch Girl Who Sees Smells but I can't stomach watching Park Yoochun be all lovey-dovey so I didn't.

I know, same here. I find it kind of swoony that he is going to be all powerful and maybe bossy around her. Never thought of this angle of the story until I watched this teaser, but I´m digging it. Don´t quite get why some people don´t like it: this is a fantasy drama, he is supposed to be a powerful god facing a mortal, so of course he would say things like that, their relationship is not exactly symmetric, at least at the beginning, until he falls for her...which I assume will happen and we will get tons of swoony moments. I´m getting optimistic about the romance here ? ...and let´s not forget how incredibly handsome Nam Joo Hyuk looks. ❤️
Counting the days for this to start.

when he said "servant," i only could think of "slave" because in modern korea, you don't use that word straight into person's face. when you hear using that word to call somebody else, it's in historical kdrama where master calls the slave.

i understand that this is historical manhwa getting modern au still with whole this hierarchy system, nonetheless i felt so uncomfortable hearing him call her using that word.

truthfully, i don't know anything about original manhwa, but couldn't he have just called him either my woman or my bride?

I like the first teaser more than the second one. This one sort of reminded me of Legend of The Blue Sea (though it made sense, since Habaek is a water god). I sort of prefer them to meet on the stream or waterfall. There is sth about an aquarium that is restrained, dead, or not so god-like, tbh. Is it because he is supposed to be a restrained god? :D

Will they release another teaser(s), or trailer, perhaps? I hope they cover other casts as well!

Tbh, I was skeptical about this drama being set in modern time, but then again, it would be fair to say that unless we have watched the first few eps, we wouldn't really know if a drama is good.

When the real manhwa comes to a drama like this, i feel skeptical because i think the production team would cut some points from the originals. I already fans of Habaek&Soah in the manhwa and when i realize this drama doesn't have child actors in it, just because in the manhwa habaek was cursed to become a child (in a day) and also an adult (at night). So, i feel unsure but I will just see how it keep going ....

Same like the K-netz, my pick for Habaek is Lee Jun Ki though he is no longer that young to be competing for a role with Nam Joo Hyuk.

Second in my list is Lee Soo Hyuk.

As for Nam Joo Hyuk and based on the teaser alone, he does not embodies that godly aura and handsome as he is, he does not own that god-like features unlike the two Lee(s) mentioned above. LJK and LSH not only have that mythical facial features, they also possess the charisma and charm down to the alluring voice.

What I don't understand is Se-kyung's reply, WHO SAYS SUCH CLICHE LINES?! I got the creeps. *shivers*
