Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 26-July 2, 2017

While ratings are far from being the only measure of a show’s success, it’s still rewarding when a show you like sees an uptick, especially one that’s been struggling. Circle was that show this week, since it spent a decent portion of its run hovering below the 2% mark (in a time slot that used to do gangbusters for tvN). But maybe last week’s cliffhanger-to-rule-them-all really sealed the deal, since it was able to end the week at 2.5%. Small victories!

Meanwhile, poor Seven Day Queen just can’t seem to catch a break and fell to 4.4% with its second episode, though that may be partially due to Ruler—Master of the Mask suddenly jumping to an impressive 14.4%, which meant that there were less viewers available for Queen. But Suspicious Partner didn’t seem too adversely affected and saw no major changes.

Over on the weekend, The Best Hit continued to find its audience while Woman of Dignity actually saw a pretty significant rise in viewership, since it’s been slowly gaining numbers since its premiere. Father Is Strange continues to dominate, of course—KBS could air pretty much anything in that time slot, but luckily, they’ve aired a pretty solid weekend family drama (and now get to reap the rewards).

While it's sad that Circle never reached 3%, but 2.5% isn't so bad. Thank you, Circle! I really enjoyed every moment! Hoping the positive feedback would encourage the production/tvN to consider a second season.

Agree, 2.5% is not bad at all for a sci-fi genre.
This is tvN's 2nd attempt on the genre. I don't remember the ratings going over 1% the first time.

I feel like the ratings drop isn't surprising. Hyun-soo is incapacitated so the main mystery can't proceed. And the secondary mystery - the cliche "your dad killed my dad"- led the characters to hide things from each other and push each other away. MSG airs on a different day, but apparently SP's timeslot competitor, Ruler, has some interesting developments this week.

I still can't get over how My Sassy Girl's ratings didn't jump off the cliff. It is a miracle that the ratings are what they are because I can't think of a show which started with such baggage(being a remake of an iconic movie and a even more iconic character) and a premiere which they buggled. I think viewers gave it a chance and stayed not just because the show got better but Joo Won and Oh Yeon Seo. I'm pretty certain if the leads are others, the ratings would have started even lower or never recover.

I am not watching Suspicious Partner. I think this show could have been a stronger competitor against Ruler which in my opinion beats everyone hands down in terms of crap writing. We already discussed why Seven Day Queen would be in the doldrums so let's leave it out of the picture. SP probably lost in terms of star power to Ruler. Yoo Seung Ho is more popular than Ji Chang Wook in Korea. It's the same for Kim So Hyun vs Nam Ji Hyun. In fact, there's a lot of debate on Ruler's forums that the show leveraged on YSH and KSH's popularity but sidelined them. Well, it's not denting their ratings though!

I agree about everything you said except the starpower part. Tons of money were spent on promoting Ruler. Yoo Seung Ho might be a bigger star than Ji Chang Wook but he isn't Kim Soo Hyun level (and his drama had 15% ratings), and I don't see Kim Soo Hyun as that big star, her most popular drama was Goblin and she played there with Kim Min Jae, both scored lead roles but Best Hit does a lot worse than Ruler.
They promoted Ruler as second moonlight, so a lot of people watched the beginning, plot was disappointing but I guess it wasn't that awful for everyone to abandon this show.

Interesting. I keep reading that Ruler was heavily promoted but publicity can do only that much. Look at Moon Lovers, with all the hype it tanked as opposed to MDBC which had far less promotion.

I am not sure if you are watching or have watched Ruler. I shall remember it as the worst written drama I've come across. If it had decent writing, this drama could have easily hit 20%. Most of the viewers who are still watching acknowledge the flaws and are actually very frustrated. My impression is that they started and will continue mainly because of the leads.

I am not a fan of Yoo Seung Ho. Unfortunately, this drama and the one before(Remember) ended up horribly frustrating to watch. Remember was another melodrama which was very weak in writing. Yet, it hit consistently above 15%.

I think that Ruler is doing better because 1) they have the star power of 3 (Yoo Seung Ho, Kim So Hyun, and L. SP has only has Ji Chang Wook. 2) Ruler is a sageuk and in general, sageuk is favored over modern dramas. 3) SP has the kind kiss scenes that you won't really want to watch with the parents or the grandparents. In general, sageuk, makjang, and innocent romance does better on general broadcast stations. I think SP should have been a cable drama and that way there wouldn't have so many episodes. Because it already has the challenge of juggling different genres. But overall, the drama is a good easy watch.

1

I beg to differ re. KSH. For one thing, her appearance in Goblin, and so is Kim Min Jae's, is always recorded as cameo. She doesn't score a lead role there.

Her most recent lead roles pre-Ruler were in the mini series Page Turner and the full cable series Let's Fight Ghost. Both did relatively well for their genre and broadcasting station track records for similar shows. Page Turner's ratings were not that far behind Individualist Ms Ji-Young, and Let's Fight Ghost never fell below 2% throughout its run and raked in over 4% for its last episode. She isn't a huge star but she is certainly one of the better child actors of her generation who are in transition to adult roles and building her name as an adult actress. Ruler spent a lot of money on its promotion but without YSH and KSH I doubt they'd have the performance they are enjoying considering the writing has deteriorated since post time-skip.

She was in Cameo in Goblin but I would call it her most famous role. Page Turner did okay and Let's fight ghost did well (it was going on when nearly every TVN drama had good ratings, so I wouldn't call it a hit). She is famous but not that famous for people to stick 16 episodes for her.
I guess marketing it as second Moonlight was good idea, leads have age difference, girl is a child actress and guy has good reputation. It is also done for right viewers. Majority of people in their 20s don't watch tv.

1

A ton of money was actually not spent on Ruler because MBC doesn't believe in the concept of big budgets for whatever reason. Being a saeguk more money was spent as opposed to a modern drama but its very likely that Ruler & 7DQ had the same amount of money in terms of production. If anything it would be King Loves and Sassy Girl that have big budgets since they got investment from China.

From what I've gathered no one in Korea is watching Ruler for plot anymore since there clearly isn't any. The show hinges on the star power of YSH-KSH combination and people are just waiting to see them get their happily ever after. Most of the comments are about Yoo Seung Ho's good looks and Kim So Hyun's beauty and of course their amazing acting abilities. Beyond that no one is paying attention to the show.

I am not sure about King Loves and MSG having big budgets from Chinese investments. I thought THAAD killed off all those funds? These two are produced after THAAD. I remembered that the casting fiasco for MSG's female lead came about because the Chinese investment fell through. The Koreans then felt they needed someone established to pull in the viewers. On the surface, I can't actually tell which saeguk has more budget. I just never got the impression that any of these 4 mentioned here were heavily promoted.

At least Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So Hyun have another ratings hit on their resume if nothing else.

1

Tencent has invested in King Loves which has already been sold to multiple countries and even MSG has received chinese money because of Joo Won.

Ruler has only managed to prove the star power of Kim So Hyun and Yoo Seung Ho and in that sense is a big win for the two young stars. Beyond that the less said the better. I'm just glad that filming is finally finished and two can move on to better projects.

1

LOL with this... That's what Im thinking too... They only watched for KSH make ups and KSH smiles.... Just their exposures alone.. Nobody cares about the plot anymore, stupid isn't??.. why just don't give them a very long commercials....... If I were them, I will not be proud that my drama is hit...

1

Ruler started out with good storyline and the power of lead actor and actress. Both of them are popular as they've been on TV since they were a child. But now it gives crappy storyline, but people are already hooked with the drama and want to know the ending. As for Suspicious Partner, this drama is a lil bit draggy as I watched this drama solely because of JCW in the beginning. But now I only watch that drama for the comedy in the crazy and weird law firm and don't really care about the crazy psychopath killer.

Hopefully the story line in Ruler is taking it's turn now. The latest episode was very good which was refreshing since the last 10 or 15 were poorly written. The two male leads (especially Yoo Seung Ho) are what has kept me going with this drama and since it is looking brighter with the writing, I will continue with it.

Can anyone enlighten me on why Ruler has crap writing? I am totally hooked on the show. Unlike many, I started off watching 7DQ. After episode 6, I started watching Ruler to fill in the time until the next episode of 7DQ and was promptly hooked on Ruler and dropped 7DQ. I find Ruler has a more intriguing plot (haha am I the only one who thinks there is a plot?) and each eposide cliffhanger is just too nervewracking. Also the acting from the young casts really draws me in (although I am not liking Kim So Hyun much here as). I usually get 2nd lead syndrome with a male character but this is the first time I am getting a second lead syndrome for the female character of Hwa Gun.

For 7DQ, I feel like the plot is too slow and meandering. It also focuses a lot more on the love story between the two leads which I find is tedious and unconvincing (maybe lack of chemistry?) Pace wise, I just feel 7DQ is trying to shove the love story of the two down my throat and the whole entire show hinges on that epic love (which I fail to see why she is so enamoured with him). I would like it to have other elements that are equally important like in the first few episodes where they focus on family bond.

So for me, I would think Ruler is the more interesting of the two. I tried pickup 7DQ again but I just could not stick with it. Maybe if it was aired at the end of the year and the only saguek airing at the time.

Lol, there is a plot but it is all over the place. However, the most recent episode is very good, so there is hope with the writing. I also can not stop watching it and will continue to the end, but I have no idea why the writing has been so bad. Also the lead female character is not being written how the drama was set to be. The second lead female is rocking her role and stands out as if she were the lead. I myself love the second lead female character and ship her with the CP. The majority of comments on other sites have said the same thing. Go figure.

I said the best in my opinion. I liked Dear My Friends and Good wife a lot but FOS stands out for me. Maybe, I like the genre.
Surprisingly, Another Oh Hae Young, I felt differently about the drama after I watched it again post live-watching. I surprisingly found the character of Average Oh Hae Young absolutely annoying and pathetic on second watch for some reason. I think Seo Hyun Jin is such a compelling actress with excellent emoting skills that I didn't notice the glaringly flawed character she was playing. I have renewed respect and amplified admiration for her for this fact alone. Not many can make an unlikable character lovable.

@gem28 I can't agree more about Oh Hae Young. IMO, the show owed its success entirely to Seo Hyun Jin. I am not dismissing the writing or the rest of the cast, it is just that this type of character can be a total hit or a total miss. No in-between.

Our Queen deserves better! I'm frustated with Seven Day Queen'srating. I guess SK people don't watch it because they already know the history and how it ends?

The Best Hit is another drama that I hope to get higher rating! People are frustrated over the whole triangle love thingy, but I just enjoy the drama regardless who ends up with who. Sure, I ship HJ and WS, but if they're not the endgame, I don't mind.

Duel is an underrated drama, but I kinda accept the rating because not everyone will actually enjoy the confusing plot while the writer seems to give just a lil bit of hint and new discovery as the drama develops.

Neverthelss, I'm happy for Fight for My Way!

I think bec there's 2 sageuks in the same time slot, Ruler aired first (with heavy advertising from MBC being pre-produced and all) and established an audience before 7DQ came (wc you did mention that SK already knows this heart wrenching history). And maybe SK just wants to watch the one that has potential happy ending. Still, I like 7DQ better regardless of ratings

Advertising definitely does help a drama and it being pre-produced, but word of mouth goes a long way too. I am watching both dramas but IMO it is the star power that is giving Ruler the good ratings. I also read the history of 7DQ so I also know how it will end, but I just read the history yesterday. Between the two I prefer Ruler, but I will watch both to the end.

Required fields are marked *

There are many discussion about this SDQ but I believe it is mainly timing issue - KBS probably is too ambitious to be competitive or else. They never learned from Beautiful Mind. Both Ruler and SP are not even giant competitor - Ruler's rating not even on the level of Chief Kim, Defendant and Whisper for this year (above 15%). Anyway, I will be tempted to invest my time for SDQ if it is airing at the end of year, especially if it is the only sageuk available. It can also receive more attention that way, so it is actually about the strategy as well.

3
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's not the competition.

With Ruler hitting mostly 12% -13% and Suspicious Partner ranging from 6% to 8%, there should be more people tuning in for the 3rd show.

Timing is one thing but I think its the history which may be the biggest factor.

I don't think it's because the Koreans already know the history and the tragic outcome. Doesn't that apply to many historical saeguks? Yet this is the genre which has the biggest potential to hit big. I think it's because the Koreans dislike the way the drama has fictionalize the events - namely Yeonsangun and the love triangle.

2
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's my sentiment as well. I have figured out some reasons why this drama is not doing well, and I believe timing and the history itself are two main reasons. I also stated the same thing before.

Timing is still important imo because knowingly they will competing against another sageuk, why would they put this one on the same time slot except if they casted popular actor for male lead who can bring the hype.. I think KBS must be aware of the potential to get low rating, so I just can't understand their reason.

At the very least, if they save it later, probably the rating could be slightly higher, maybe around 8-9% especially if ppl are craving for sageuk that time and this drama is the only option they have.

But imo, if this drama is actually heavy on political stuffs, and they didn't fictionalize the events i. e the love triangle, there's potential this drama to get higher rating. But then the title won't be Queen for Seven Days.....

2
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I feel like being surprisingly light on the political stuff may have worked against them as well. I feel that with sageuks, there is always some big political goal or vengeance. And Yeok going after the throne isn't given much spotlight in the drama. A drama advertised as a love triangle involving 2 royals (one of whom was Yeonsangun) and a girl, who will later be deposed, doesn't sound all that appealing.

2

I was wondering if the ratings would go up after Ruler & SP end but hearing about the history angle I'm thinking perhaps not. If the problem is on an ethical level of glorifying a dictator then I can understand their sentiment. Its not fair to the cast though so its sad.

5

But there is fiction is all historical dramas to make it more entertaining or it might as well be a documentary. IMO the love triangle in 7DQ is making the story line more interesting and not less. The actor planning the king is doing an amazing job, although I hate the tyrant king. Comparing dramas being aired now compared to other dramas this time of year from a year ago is useless because it doesn't affect the outcome of what is going on now, rather it just frustrates you more trying to figure it out as to why a persons favorite drama is not doing as well as you think it should. Just keep watching the one you like and continue to support them I my recommendation. For me l like Ruler first then 7DQ. I tried SP but dropped it because I found it boring although I love JCW. Watching three dramas at the same time was a little difficult with my schedule anyways, so I am ok with dropping one.

It's not about tragic ending of the story that keeps Korean viewers from watching it. It's romanticizing the worst king in the entire history of Korea that keeps viewers from tuning in.
Yeonsangun's long list of crimes against women alone is unforgivable. He killed and raped a lot of women. Surely we should understand how they would feel if they were to watch this version for half of this show's run.
Maybe they'll get to show the real Yeonsangun later but it might be too late.

Sageuks used to be a serious means of cultural expression and political awakening. Writers were more conscious about their history. You can kind of feel the pride and passion coming from the pen that wrote the scripts.

What they get now is a bunch of short fluffy fusions and not much about their history.

16
2

Required fields are marked *

Agreed. If you're going to re-examine or try to humanize a controversial figure like Yeonsangun, you need to do it in a historically conscious way that doesn't whitewash his crimes (like Queen Insoo).

It's actually really sad that writers have gotten so careless and nihilistic about getting a new ~angle on history by picking a side and arbitrarily sanctifying or villainizing figures to suit their narrative purposes, because the desire to read between the lines and see things from multiple perspectives is what used to make this genre so great. Honesty makes all the difference, I guess. So many masterpieces of the genre have been tentatives to look at monsters like Yeonsan as human beings, warts and all, and to contextualize their crimes within the crazy times they were living in (Shin Don, Queen Insoo, Cruel Palace, even non-Jung Ha-yeon stuff like Eight Days lol).

7DQ might not have the SK viewers that much interest because it has in someway twisted a part of their history. But i believe, it being a kdrama doesn't affect our sentiment to the story. I for one is a big fan of PMY and your culture ..so be proud of it.

7DQ has also less viewers I think because seeing some comments online a bunch of people didn't like the beginning (PMY going through hanging) because it's so historically inaccurate-- she should have been ordered death by drinking poison according to her crimes. Public hanging is apparently too uncharacteristic of the era... They were saying "if you're going to change history, then change it all the way or none at all" and stuff. That first scene might have turned lots of people off from watching any more.

I havent read any news about people thinking it's the last episode, but I think it's understandable that people might get confused because 32episodes (30mins each) = 1 hour long 16 episodes and most of kdramas have the standard of 16 episodes.

I doubt anyone thought it was the last episode. Maybe that is just wishful thinking of the people that are unhappy that the ratings went up even more. I think the ratings went up because of the preview at the end of the prior episode and it did end up being the best episode yet.

I've moved my camp to the forest (FoS) so I'm perfectly happy with their ratings ?

Maybe the recent movement to romance is Best Hit's attempt to attract more viewers? Idk but I'm surprised that the show just let HJ eyeing JH from head to toes and look incredulous after learning about his parentage, offering some bits and pieces of advice, then mostly leave it at that. At this moment I think the show has lost some of its touch and direction by inserting the love triangle, but let's see if the ratings would pick up for the cast's sake.

After understanding the possible (and probably most plausible) reason behind 7DQ's ratings I'm now just praying for the show to have their episode count intact. The cast deserve at least that for their effort.

TBH - at least Grandpa and Mal Sook are still around to give us fun. Grandpa being petty over ice cream is hilarious but he is also a protective grandpa, when he confronted that boy, l honestly laughed at some makjang BGM ? I can actually watch drama with these two as the main casts though.

SDQ - the rating for epi 10 is quite confusing. Some stated 4.4%, some stated 6.4%.

I think it's 4.4% for 7DQ.

For TBH I just hope to get more comedic but also heartfelt moment. I don't like the illness card they pull on Grandpa. Can he just simply forget things because he's old? Why does the show have to go to such lengths to draw tears and heart? Grandpa's interaction with Mal Sook is enough heart in itself. I really hate it when dramas pull the illness card on characters that I care about ?

That conversation with the little boy is hilarious! It revisits the family's disapproval trope wonderfully. I laughed so hard at grandpa's attempt to buy the little boy off his Mal Sook lol. Can we please have a mini-series for these two without any looming tragedy? Is it just too much to ask????

Oh yes mini series with around 6-8 epi, slice of life drama, about the everyday life of Grandpa and Mal Sook. Or special drama with 2-4 epi.. I can actually watch one epi with full of dates between these two ❤
Cha Tae Hyun seriously need to consider this though.

Agree why must they put the illness card. ?

I don't blame the team behind The Best Hit. People as in domestic audience complained a lot about not having enough Hyun Jae/Yoon Shi Yoon, going as far as to saying they'll drop the show entirely. Couple that with the bad press thanks to the banana milk incident involving the child of the actress playing Bo-Hee, they are being extremely cautious. So, they're responding to the feedback they're getting.

I don't really have any hard feelings toward them tbh. The only show that I've got any kind of hard feelings toward is that-show-which-must-not-be-named ?. I read the comments on naver too and understand why they do what they're doing. The Korean viewer base is their target viewer base anyway so I can't really bitch about it. I just feel that it's a pity because the show has to go into this direction as what it has done at the beginning, while nothing novel, is very much enjoyable and I thought for once I could enjoy a family comedy ?

Maybe instead of slashing the # of episodes for 7DQ, KBS will make the writer change the story to a happy ending to attract the audience. I can be on board with this approach, KBS. I am willing to blatantly disregard history just to make my Queen happy, yes I am.

I feel bad for the SDQ casts and the production team (also other shows that should get good ratings). Now, I just hope this drama can end well and properly. Please KBS don't cut the number of episodes or try changing the storyline to raise the ratings. Also, hopefully the atmosphere of filming is fun, not easy to syuting sageuk during summer. I hope they can read comments on Naver and know many people encourages them and waiting new episode every week impatiently.

Actually I want to know what motivated this production to produce this drama with the idea to romanticize their tyrant King Yeonsangun, knowing how Koreans hate him. Maybe it will be better if the love triangle is between Yeok + Cha Kyung + Seo No instead but then it will be like The King Loves with different period lol.

I too think that this is a big risk and unwise move that the writer took, considering they are a newbie both in the industry and in the genre. I kind of understand their desire to bring their own perspective to history but for legitimate reasons it doesn't resonate that well among the Korean audience. The love triangle trope would still work, I guess, if the writer had decided to ignore all references to real historical figures and gone full fusion on this show.

Yeok + CK + SN would be a better alternative re. the ratings influence. Personally I'd prefer if they didn't go with the triangle trope but maybe that's just me.

3

Yes! That's what I want to know too!

I can see why the premise is tempting. A queen which was deposed in 7 days by none other than her beloved husband. I think the show might still work if they had not gone the way of a love triangle. They should have just centered it around the politics and the love between the king and his deposed queen.

5

Agree, I think this drama will work better if they don't romanticize Yeonsangun, and actually love story between Yeok and CK is already enough. New writers or not, I believe they already researched enough about this subject. I don't know if they wanted to follow Jang Ok Jung's route which focused more on her romance story and JOJ still did well despite of their re-adaptation and competed against Gu Family Book that time. But between Jang Hee Bin, a story of femme fatale and Yeonsangun the tyrant King, it is obvious which one is worst. Or maybe since SDQ is airing not so long after Rebel ended, they decided to give different approach for Yeonsan.

TBH, at the first place, before the casting confirmed I believed Yeonsangun's character is a major supporting character - kinda like Amogae in Rebel, who only appeared around half of drama, so my expectation Yeonsan will only appear half of this drama only, around 10 epi. I didn't expected he will appear more than half of drama.

2

The bottom line is it's all about viewership and that means money. I would rather them change the story line.

I am very happy with the Mon-Tue shows. They all have close ratings to each-other, which means that the viewers really are enjoying those dramas.

As for Wed-Thu dramas, Ruler passed 14%, making it the most watched MBC drama of the year, and probably a lot of awards incoming. As for SP, this week's episodes were weak, so of course the public focused somewhere else.

Weekend dramas - I am happy that FIS is climbing even further in ratings.
Happy that FOS is keeping their numbers (best rated drama of TVN since Goblin :P )
I am extremely surprised at Woman of Dignity climbing further, although considering how much koreans love makjang I really should have expected it.

PS. Someone convince KBS to move The Best Hit in a better timeslot, cause that one is not doing it any favours :(

Rebel and Ruler actually have the same highest ratings at this point but only King's Love could surpass them. Not sure but I don't think any other MBC drama will come close to those numbers.

I think the reason why Mon-Tues drama all are doing well because of different genre. The balance is there. Romcom fans can watch FMW or MSG, sageuk fans can choose MSG, and heavy drama fans can watch Lookout.

Sometimes I want tvn drama to have the same airing time with the other drama so the competition will be among 4 drama and maybe can give a bit advantage since the airing time will be 10 pm instead of 11pm, but sometimes I don't because I'm worried the rating will be much lower. lol.

The new crop of shows is a good mix both. I'm looking forward to School 2017 the most of the three. The King Love is strangely giving me Moon Lover vibes so not sure I want to watch.

I think I will watch Falsify and School 2017, and will watch at least 2 epi of The King Loves because I love the child actors in this drama.

0

I feel like the child actors of The King Loves might pull a Moon Embracing the Sun because there really hasn't been any buzzy crop of child actors since then. And since YJG is already an adult and the girls crossing over next year there seems to be a lull in the child actor department.

2

I think @kiara explained elsewhere that with the decline of the golden age of sageuk, the recent batch of child actors don't enjoy the same sageuk training as the generations before them. I hope the child actors in The King Loves would be good. I actually think Yoona fares better in playing characters with lively, bright personality (President and I) rather than heavy or melodramatic roles (K2). I have never seen her in a period drama so let's see how this goes. Some actors though tend to do well in period dramas while don't usually impress in modern dramas, or vice versa, so for now I'll give the main cast the benefit of the doubt.

I have a feeling that Ruler's highest rating will be only 15%. Rebel pulled a 14.4% in its final episode. If Ruler manages to surpass that it will be the highest for MBC in a long time for their weekday prime-time drama.

I was hoping for SP to continue after they broke 10% last week. Alas, that did not happen.

Some dramas are ending soon and new dramas are coming up. I wonder how the new ones will shake things up.

After reading one beanie's comment on Seven Day Queen, I am no longer shocked at its dismal ratings. If she's representative of how most Koreans view this drama, the show is doomed from the start. If this show had been based on fiction like Ruler, I think it might give Ruler a run for its money or at least beat Suspicious Partner.

I don't think the tragic ending is the problem because both Empress Ki and Moon Lovers had not so happy endings. Especially the latter but they pulled in way better numbers. Most historical drama's have sad endings so I doubt that is a detterent.

I think its just a matter a which lead couple do you prefer: YSH-KSH or YJW-PMY. The former are bigger stars than the latter so that's probably why Ruler has the better numbers. If 7DQ had Park Shin Hye & Kim Soo Hyun for instance they would have had better numbers irrespective of the tragic ending.

I don't think an imminent sad ending is the main factor. I know the comment @outofthisworld refers to. It's comment no.35 in the recap for 7DQ episode 9, if anyone wants an insider's perspective on 7DQ reception. I can't say for sure that everyone in Korea would feel the same, but I think those who are historically conscious would most probably share the sentiment.

I'm not so sure I buy this. I mean sure he was considered the worst tyrant of all the kings, but he lived over 500 years ago. People usually aren't that sensitive to historical figures from that long ago being portrayed sympathetically. There a tons of examples of popular shows/movies from different countries that do this. Heck, even ones that depict Yeonsangun have been popular before. The King and the Clown had him obsessing over Lee Jun Ki and that was very popular.

1
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well, I personally think it's less historical but perhaps "Yeonsangun fatigue"? Before 7DQ, the most recent saguek was Rebel, and that also had Yeonsangun as the centrestage tyrant...I mostly covered Rebel through recaps, and when I read about 7DQ's premise, I was pretty sure I didn't want to watch it because of all the potential Yeonsangun craziness... I am still covering 7DQ through reading recaps, but unlike Rebel where I gave a couple of episodes a go, despite how the story does seem quite good, I have yet to watch an episode of 7DQ...

1

Good point. I don't think Yeosangun's portrayal is the main issue. The low ratings is likely due to all the reasons mentioned here. A little here, a little there really adds up.

2

It's not about how much Yeonsangun has been portrayed in drama / movies, but the approach taken which is different than the usual and hardly to be accepted in general. Well sensitivity depends on the cultures / countries. I believe Koreans do take their history seriously. Among the reasons why they really take their military service seriously is because of their history as well. Of course this might not be the sole reason - other factors surely have to be taken into consideration too.

4

You are missing the point here.. I think Koreans doesn't mind anyone portraying that tyrant king but they have a problem with whitewashing his character and overlooking his sins.. I googled about him after 7DQ and he sure was crazy who even went to the extent of personally killing an eunuch who served 3 kings before him by chopping off his limps and even killed his entire family.. so it's quite understandable from Korean prospective.. i mean its lyk expecting jews to see the romantic side of Hitler

5

Why are people so hung up on this theory to explain the low ratings?? There's literally no proof. Find me comments of Koreans being upset at a sympathetic portrayal of Yeonsangun. Stop assuming you know how Koreans feel about a 500 yr old King. I just looked through k-netz comments for the drama and literally no one objects to this drama's interpretation of Yeonsangun. I see nothing but tons of praise for LDG's portrayal. No one cares. He's not Hitler, this isn't the Korean War. Those things happened within the last century, people still alive today lived through them. Not the same thing as a bad king (frankly not THAT bad when you look at some kings/emperors in other countries histories) from the Joseon dynasty. Pretty much nothing he did had a lasting impact on the Korean peninsula. He didn't commit massive genocide or start a war that split the country into two. Most Koreans likely have a very vague idea of Yeonsangun and even if they know more why would they care? This isn't the first Sageuk to play really loose with historical figures and ignore their worst parts, and many that have were huge successes. Ever consider that maybe it's not appropriate for broadcast television and viewers would be turned off if they actually showed all of Yeonsangun's horribleness? For a non-Korean example, Genghis Khan raped and killed a ton of women too, but no one, not even from the countries he conquered, actually cares about the many popular sympathetic and heroic portrayals of him.

2

@Kimchiqueen - I wasn't going to say this at first, but seeing the amount of upvotes your comment is getting I think it needs to be said. PLEASE DO NOT COMPARE YEONSANGUN TO HITLER. I am a Jewish person myself, do not tell me that how I feel about a monster who orchestrated the genocide of 6 million of my people (along with many LGBT, POC, Romani, Disabled, ect.) less than a century ago and created an ideology of hatred that still thrives to this day is equivalent to how Koreans feel about an insane King from 500 yrs ago. Even if I knew nothing about Yeonsangun, I would know that it's not comparable. Yeonsangun certainty did horrible things, probably had thousands of people executed in violent manner for unjust reasons. But that's NOT genocide. There's a lot of historical figures that did that and worse, he's not THAT bad as far as terrible Kings and Emperors go. He's more like Caligula and nothing at all like Hitler. Like Caligula he is mostly a joke to modern people for how terrible and crazy he was. And trust me Italians don't get offended if you portray Caligula sympathetically/romantically, they've already done that. SO STOP IT. And next time you want to compare someone to Hitler please ask yourself "Is what this person did REALLY comparable to starting a global war that killed millions of soldiers and civilians, trying to wipe entire groups of people off the face of the earth, and successfully orchestrating their genocide with more than 6 million victims?".

1

1. Of all the ways you could have interpreted what i said, you chose this.. FYI I wasn't comparing the persons but the reaction.
2. You are actually proving my point. One mention of the tyrant and you are screaming and going all Wikipedia on me. I guess it's the same with Koreans too.. while that king maynot be a Hitler, he was definitely the worst in THEIR HISTORY.
3. Some beanies have already mentioned about such comments in above comments. You can look it up.
4. Yes, its my theory and my opinion and No, i don't have any data to prove it but then neither do you have any to prove that its not correct( and i am not talking about some random drama in which that king is portrayed, but one in which he is playing a hero with all his sins overlooked). Again i don't know how Koreans think but neither do you..

Believe it or not, way back about 40 years ago someone tried to make a Hitler love story. I don't think it ever got released.

So I was wondering.... How could Thief-Nom, Thief-Nim (Thr Good Thieves)'s ratings are always good? I was surprisrd, honestly. While at the same time, I am shock Circle (and The Best Hit) didn't make it very well. Especially Circle, since from what I heard, the Koreans are crazing over it right now. But perhaps I heard it from a Korean who LOVES Circle, so...yeah?
By the say, Thief...is it really that good? Since Dramabeans doesn't do the recap so I don't have any opportunity to read all the pros and cons. I was wondering on their ratings for weeks... Then something came to my mind all of sudden, is it because of Soshi's power?? I mean, back then in 2012, Fashion King made a very nice compilation of ratings throughout its broadcast (never reach below 10.), from what I heard, K-SONEs really hate the storyline (for me, yes, it was a crap...sorry?), but they watched it for Yuri and to see Yuri, so...maybe that was why the ratings could make it.
So, Thief..? How is it actually?

I've read many comments saying that SDQ is trying to romanticize Yeonsangun. But in my opinion, they are not. I mean, romanticizing is like what they did with Jang Ok-jung, Living by Love where there is a 360 turn in character. But in SDQ you can still see the madness and tyranny in Yeonsangun like how easy it was for him to resort to killing and also keeping a gisaeng by his side (or is she a concubine? I can't tell by her hair though). Also, not to mention that he is asserting his right as a King by taking Chae-kyung by force. Isn't that typical of the real Yeonsangun in history? This show might have left out the gory details such as the literati purges and the pleasure grounds but they might show it in later episodes. I'm really crossing my fingers that they won't cut the episodes or change the writing. The actors are doing a phenomenal job on portraying their characters and scenes are soooo moving. I love all the angsty parts so even if this show has a sad ending, I would stick to it to end.
