Chae Soo-bin and Dongha up for lead roles in MBC’s I’m Not a Robot

Oh, this would be a cute pairing. MBC’s I’m Not a Robot is on the search for its leads, and Dongha (Suspicious Partner) and Chae Soo-bin (Strongest Deliveryman) have received offers to star in the android rom-com. Chae Soo-bin’s already well on her way to becoming an established leading lady in dramaland, but I’m glad Dongha is getting a chance to become the hero after a series of memorable supporting roles.

The premise sounds cute and a little wacky, which is just how I like my rom-coms: I’m Not a Robot will feature a man who has never been in a relationship out of necessity, arising from his allergy to humans. He will meet a female android and fall in love with her. It’s a simple synopsis, but I have so many questions regarding everything about this world that I’m looking forward to watching this. Like, will this be set in the future, or in an alternate present universe where androids are the norm? Are these androids capable of emotion, and what strata of society do they occupy? This show hasn’t even started yet, and it’s already bringing out the sci-fi geek in me.

The reports haven’t specified which roles Dongha and Chae Soo-bin have been offered, but they’re called the “female and male lead roles,” so chances are high that she’s up to play the android and he’s being considered for the male lead who falls in love with her. Chae Soo-bin’s been working pretty much nonstop, and if she signs on for I’m Not a Robot, the show will mark her fourth television project this year, though If We Were a Season is a shorter drama special. Dongha has been having a pretty good year himself, with great performances as a reformed chaebol brat in Chief Kim and as a villain in Suspicious Partner. I remember really enjoying his roles in Three Days and Feel-Good Day as well, so I hope he gets to level up to leading man status with I’m Not a Robot.

MBC’s I’m Not a Robot was originally slated to follow Hospital Ship in November, but since PD Jung Dae-yoon is a member of the labor union that will go on strike starting next week, the show will most likely get pushed back.

Yes, Minah was up for the role but negotiations fell through. Nothing against Chae Soo Bin - this seems to be her year- but I was hoping to see Minah on screen again. I've missed her since beautiful Gong Shim.

I don't really like her character in strongest delivery man, so I'll try to see past that. She's alright and I might even find myself really liking her if it's the right fit. I think he's great and was one of the best parts of Suspicious Partner. Will watch for him.

Chae Soo-bin has been on my screen way as a lead twice already this year. And while she's an okay actor, three times really is too much in such a short period of time. I'm hoping someone else gets the chance to land this role instead of her.

There are so many actors I want to see get a chance at leading a show that it's frustrating seeing the same actors so many times back to back just because they seem to be the flavor of the moment.

I mean, there's no shortage of talented ladies. Just a few that have not been given a lead role are Seo Ji-hye, Lim Ju-Eun, Son Yeo-Eun, and Hwang Sun-Hee. Then there are others like Park Ha-Sun and Kim So-Eun for whom it's been a while.

Yeah lol. I am abit sick of seeing her. Is she desperate for fame? She needs to pick the most impactful projects rather than just accepting any projects that comes her way.

Plus, like you mentioned, there are alot more talented actresses who have not made a comeback this year. Give the roles to them! Chae Soobin isn't even a ratings magnet either.

Acting is her job, I didn't know working hard even in smaller projects makes you 'desperate for fame'.

For so many years it's difficult for rookie actresses like her to get lead roles at all because people keep giving roles to useless idols. I don't remember people having such problems when Ji Soo or Nam Joo Hyuk were doing 3-4 full dramas in 1 year.

Nam Joo Hyuk is terrible. And Ji Soo is okay in supporting roles at best. I've not seen him taking up lead roles back to back, and I'd complain if he got one, let alone multiple ones.

Chae Soo-bin isn't a bad actor; she's merely okay. And this would be her third lead role very quickly. I tend to watch most dramas which aren't 50 episodes long, so I like to see more actors get opportunities.

Heck, I've been posting a variant of this comment very often it feels like. Even when it concerns talented actors like Jang Na-ra, Seo In-guk, or Hwang Jung-eum.

When actors take roles like this back to back, they never create enough differences or depth to their performances. It sticks out and isn't a good thing.

And it's a common thing to see in drama land where certain actors become flavor of the month and show up way too often.

.....considering her previous two dramas before Strongest Deliveryman had some of the highest ratings of the year (Moonlight) and very good critical reviews (Rebel) respectively, I'm going to have to say that's plenty of impact, right there.

And almost every single one of the actresses named above has been in a drama that aired in 2017, or is currently airing. As for the 'Chae Soo-bin isn't a ratings magnet' thing, too bad for you that her last two dramas did get good ratings, and the numbers for Strongest Deliveryman have been on the uptick even though it's airing in an experimental weekend slot where it's not unheard of for dramas to go below 3 percent.

I agree that any actor/actress should be more picky in selecting his/her role, and there are a lot more talented actors that deserve more attention.

However, the sad thing with kdrama industry is, talent is mostly at no 2, what matters more is your popularity. The ones who debuted as an actor without being an idol or comes from powerful agency have to work extra hard to gain the recognition for their efforts. When it comes to these particular actors, talents are not enough, luck and timing should be there as well. There's nothing wrong for her to do drama back to back, she needs to strike while the iron is hot otherwise she might miss the right timing.

I find your remark "desperate for fame" somewhat silly. It's like asking a formula 1 driver if they're "desperate to drive fast".

For actresses, in particular, they have a pretty small window in time to make it to the "A list" and many never make it due to lack of opportunity or luck. In recent times, (say 10 years) I think NO actress has climbed into the A list after turning 30. (Actors have a slightly easier time very likely). In such a competitive environment, it would be odd for her not to want to push herself out of supporting roles to lead actress status and then to attempt to get into the A list.

While we may all have our opinions as to who has more talent, is better looking or is more deserving etc, the commercial side of the industry not only looks to these factors but ultimately also the "it" factor.

There are tons of aspiring and current actors who are beautiful (handsome), talented, dedicated to their craft and hardworking. Frankly, 99% of them will not make it to the A list.

It has been a pretty disappointing few years in dramaland with no real new faces (maybe Kim Go Eun and Lee Sung Kyung) working in breakout hits. While she (CSB) could maybe become a little more selective, I think she still has to gain the exposure and not be associated with a complete "dud" to solidify her position as lead actress material. In the next year or two, she has to be in a knockout hit drama and MAYBE that will bring her to the top tier of bankable female stars where she can pick and choose her roles. (it is a pretty short list and few stay there once they close in on 40 years old. It is a brutal system)

So, all power to CSB... go for it girl! Make lots of money and more importantly, live a happy life.

Then are you seriously watching every drama from SK? If yes, it's not the actor that would make you sick.

1

Required fields are marked *

er, I think Park Ha-sun's absence from dramaland has more to do with her being about 9 months pregnant than with Chae Soo-bin getting lead roles.

And honestly, I think this complaint is a bit unfair - as @pigsnout pointed out, young actresses have been locked out of public broadcast lead roles for years, and now that one is finally breaking into leading lady zone, we have a problem with that? And the complaint is doubly ridiculous because unlike some of the male actors in her age group who've been working at a similar pace and got promoted to lead roles without the skills to back it up (and no one complained when they did 3-4 dramas a year), she actually has talent.

That's nonsense whataboutism and deflection. I complain about this often. Whether it's Seo In-guk or Chae Soo-bin, it's all the same to me when they're in 3 dramas in one year as leads. Where you're spending the vast majority of 16-20 episodes in their presence. It's way too much, and doesn't really enhance the drama because their characters ultimately feel familiar.

There are very few actors who'd be able to get away with that, and it sure as hell isn't any of the ones who usually end up in so many lead roles like this so quickly. It's tiring to see because all actors have certain ticks and quirks, and they just carry over because they're not exactly developing their ability when acting like workhorses.

Chae Soobin is a new favorite of mine. She's such a great actor that she made Garyung, a character that could have easily been boring or annoying, into my favorite female character, despite the fact that I have watched so many kdrama. I'm glad she is getting many offers for dramas and I hope her popularity increases!

yeah, Ga-ryung on paper isn't very interesting, especially in the first half but Chae Soo-bin made her so charming and natural that it was hard not to love her.

But when an actress conveys emotion so perfectly even with her eyes+half her face hidden by a blindfold, you know she's something special.

I liked Minah as a possible leading lady contender, but I like Chae Soo-bin even more, so I'm good with this - the girl has taken herself from second lead zone to leading lady in under a year, and looking at her performances, she absolutely deserves it. If anything this news makes me glad because at least it means she hasn't been banished to web dramas or weekend/time slot experiments after the success of Rebel, she's too good for that.

The writer does give me pause though - Shine or Go Crazy was not very good, even though Honey Lee killed it in her role. Maybe this drama, not being a sageuk, will be slightly better written? I'd hate to see Chae Soo-bin waste herself on a crap drama.

I feel like Dong-ha & Minah will make a very charming couple but Chae Soo-bin is not a bad choice, she might has a better acting chop, it is just I prefer CSB in a meatier role. Even in Rebel, after second half of the drama I started to pay attention towards her character. I stopped watching Strongest Deliveryman after epi 3 so I don't know about her acting and character, I disliked how her character is written based on what I watched, but not her acting. If this drama probably to be pushed back, it might be even better because girl has been working non-stop from early this year.

I hope Jung Hye-sung will get lead her role next. She is not very amazing as an actress yet, but when it comes to romcom, aside from acting skill, it is the natural charms help to make it work which she has it. I loved her pairing with Dong-ha in Glorious Days, although at first she annoyed me. She is like Jo Bo-ah for me (and yes lead role for Bo-ah as well!)

I also kind of agree with you. I know dong ha is great, I liked him more in Cheif Kim and Beautiful mind than in SP. The serial killer role wasn't something extraordinary to write home about, but his comedic timing is great. With that being said, is he a lead role material yet? Only time can tell, though for some strange reason I was more interested in seeing him with minah, than with CSB. I would admit, CSB is my new fav after rebel and 'Strong delivery man', so I want a better project for her, the robot premise doesn't look much promising to me after reading the drama synopsis. So maybe she should pass and wait for something new. And I would love to see Jung hye sung with dong ha like you said! She is the only thing that seems good in the manhole drama lol.

When it comes to whether he is a lead material or not, I am afraid I can't answer that. He has debuted many years already, only this year he started to gain more attention. Actors like Nam Joo Hyuk is not even a lead material as well, but he has led few drama already. So I think it will be fair to give chance for Dong-ha to show what he is capable of.

Jung Hye-sung and Dong-ha will be a very adorable pairing in romcom. Their comedic timing are great. I also want to see Jung Hye-sung reunite with Choi Woo-shik one day.

Looking at some of these comments, I wonder how good a young actress has to be before she can get lead roles without people here complaining that she isn't good enough for them or is being seen too often.

And this isn't even the sucky ones like that idol actress who can't act type, but a talented actress who has a range of different roles. I never see anyone saying this about similar male actors except when someone is trying to defend a crappy idol actir by dragging the actual actors.
