Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 31-Aug. 6, 2017

While Falsify is still indisputably in first place at the beginning of the week, its viewership declined ever so slightly, which seems to have been across the board for all shows on Monday and Tuesday except for School 2017, which at least maintained its numbers (and saw an eeeeever so small uptick, though not enough to break 5.0%).

Over in the middle of the week, Seven Day Queen ended at a respectable enough 7.6%, considering the low numbers it’s been pulling in throughout its entire run. Man Who Dies to Live maintained first place at just under 10%, while Reunited Worlds kept a close second at 7.5%. Unfortunately, Criminal Minds lost the higher numbers it premiered to and netted just 3.0% this week, which doesn’t seem to bode too well for the remake of the popular American show of the same name.

Meanwhile, KBS continues to try and make a name for itself in the weekend drama circuit (the one starting on Fridays), and premiered Strongest Deliveryman in the slot The Best Hit used to occupy, only without the half-episode format. Of course, Woman of Dignity continues to do very well for itself, while new OCN drama Rescue Me netted a meager 1.1% as of its first episode.

i heard KBS is getting rid of the friday-saturday timeslot due to low ratings. honestly i don't think it's the day but the time they air it, 11:00 is way too late. really hope the ratings for strongest deliveryman can rise next week

Yes I heard it but it hasn't been confirmed, I think. I really hope ratings for Strongest Deliveryman can go up gradually, at least better after the Woman of Dignity ends, although it looks like these two dramas have different target audience. If the ratings improve, maybe KBS at least can extend this timeslot and that means hopefully more opportunities for those who haven't been able to leads in the weekday timeslot and for rookie or unknown actors too.

That's actually a really great idea about having the time slot for rookies and unknown actors. It gives them the chance to shine and us the chance to get new faces on our screens. And KBS can use this time slot to experiment with shows and genres

I haven't seen the K-drama adaptation of Entourage but from what I've heard they didn't really adapt it for a Korean audience. I only saw the first episode of Criminal Minds and I kinda was like, seen that a million times before. The setup seemed very American so maybe that's a possible reason for the ratings? And hey, don't be dissing my baby Bride of the Water God ?. My baby may have issues but I'm standing by my baby.

Strongest Deliveryman's premiere episodes were quite a light and fun watch, something along the line of The Best Hit that it replaced. Kim Sun-ho as the bratty Jin-gyu is actually my favourite character. He's terrible, I know, but between the adorable dimples and the occasional moments of vulnerability, I'm hoping he'll develop more along the way of Myung-seok in Chief Kim.

I love Kim Sun Ho in Chief Kim & this drama too! He is really showing a lot of potential, and I always love discovering a new talent. Looks like Chief Kim introduced us new talents like Dong Ha (he is not really rookie since he has debuted in 2009 if i'm not mistaken) but Kim Sun Ho is really rookie, based on what I checked this is only his second drama. He started his career late since he is '86 liner so I hope he will be more active in the future. He and the second female lead Go Won Hee are my fav so far.

I wish School 2017 will reach 5%, although I'm already happy for this show not hitting below 4% though.

Falsify is doing good too! Originally I started mainly for the casts but the storyline doesn't made me disappointed so far. The rating they got is well deserved.

Happy for Woman of Dignity!

Strongest Deliveryman - haven't watch the second epi yet. But seeing the increase of the rating could be a good thing.

Looking forward to see both Manhole & Live Up to Your Name!

Woman of Dignity has 9.9% ratings. woaah. Is this the highest rating JTBC ever received?
It seems like Stranger will be the only hit for tvn in 2017.
Rescue me - 1.1% is disappointing for OCN but i think it still is good one.
School 2017 - can compete against annoying King.
I'm not much impressed with strongest Deliveryman though it feels better than Meh.

I think yes, WOD has the highest rating so far for jTBC.

I hope drama like Live Up For Your Name and Prison Life can get high rating too. I have some hope for Argon too to beat BOTWG.

I love second epi of SD more than the first one and I love second leads more so far. It's nothing really amazing yet but it fulfills the element of romcom and slice of life drama. I'm personally prefer low key romcom where the characters are not too loud but I will just accept what I get and enjoy it as long as I can relate with the drama.

Glad that SDQ atleast made it up to 7.6, it might be a little encouraging for the team.
Strongest Deliveryman is good but I am unable to decipher the purpose of the show, also the plot. I know its more character driven, but it seems like its unsure which direction it is lead to and does become boring at times. It is as of yet not giving me good slice of life drama feels but I think it will be better than what FMW tried to be in that genre but eventually turned out to be more of a romance.

Moreover, is Woman of Dignity good? I think it has scored the highest for JTBC ever. I didn't even try it becaue it was makjang and SWDBS's writer who I am not a fan of. So how is it going?

Woman of Dignity - The actresses kill it ! Kim Sun Ah acts perfectly a mysterious character. You will even get goosebumps. It's hard time to realize that it's the same writer as SWDBS. There's no inconsistency in the plot so far and makjang is done really well.

If you like makjang, then it's all good. ?

From my pov, this rating can be expected because most big three's weekend dramas are makjang and most of them are pulling numbers like 20% and some even pass the 30% and 50% marks. If makjang dramas can excel in public, they can also excel in cable.

School 2017 is sadly under 5% ? I hope it can rise above 5% soon, Fighting! ?

But my heart aches for Seven Day Queen! I had hope that it could reach 10% in the finale week but I guess that's a stretch. Whatever the reasons may be for its dismal ratings, it isn't due to the writing or directing or acting because the drama shone in all these aspects.

MWDTL makes me curious with its high ratings. Obviously, the domestic audience couldn't care less but there must be something that keeps them watching. I guess I'll never know whether the drama improved from the initial week which I found quite inane aside from the controversy.

Criminal Minds' ratings isn't bad per se but considering the budget and hype, it must be disappointing. The drop from premiere week doesn't bode well but considering that many viewers felt pulled in after a major tragedy befalling the main character, more people might just tune in.

For a show which was very low at the beginning, achieved near to 8% for finale epi is considering good. This is Yeon Woo-jin's second lead role in public channels, I hope he will keep getting lead roles in the future. I felt bad unable to follow this drama even it is only for him, but knowing he received a lot of positive feedbacks and new fans made me happy. ? More meatier roles for him in the future, hopefully!

Don't take my word for it. This is my first School drama because it's not my fav genre. Surprisingly, it turned out to be both fun and poignant at times. One complaint I've read about the show is the unbelievable school practices. Somehow they don't bother me because I've always taken the show as kind of a satire on the state of education system and youths in Korea. Plus I have a weakness for the lead guy. Also, the lead actress is well cast in this role and very likable to boot.

It's not as good as School 2013 yet, but it's heart warming and entertaining. My guess is what we are watching is actually Eun Ho webtoon/web-drama cause the drama has such a cartoonish feeling and some characters (e.g. principal) are very unreal...

Re: MWDTL
The first 4 episodes were hilarious. Choi Min Soo's performance rivaled Cha Seung Won's iconic performance as Dok Ko Jin.

The uproar about MWDTL was - simply stated - an honest overreaction. The show is a comedy rife with OTT characters. The opening episode showed the main lead living in a fictional country similar to Dubai, where there's a lot of latitude on how foreigners can live. That setting was chosen to offer an explanation for how the character could accumulate a limitless amount wealth in a short period of time.

But people misinterpreted the combination of an OTT character living in the middle east, as the show attempting to mock Muslim culture. But seriously, what cultures do Kdramas ever represent accurately? For example Heirs portrayed the US as a country that only consists of wealthy and vapid partiers, bigoted oppressors of immigrants and predatory people of color who live in ghettos and look for opportunities to rape and murder. But I digress.

There were people over at Soompi who were willing to pay someone to sub. But no takers. I would have added some $ too, if anyone wanted to do subs or a recap that'd allow viewers to watch with some idea of what's being said.

It's really unfortunate that the whole debacle has resulted in people being denied the opportunity to watch what appears to be a really good show. I think that if the people who were initially offended took a second calm look at the show, they'd have a different opinion. Kdramas often present caricatures of what's found in foreign cultures. There's nothing wrong with that, unless it's meant in a mean-spirited way.

Well, I have to say it since nobody else does. At 9.98% Woman of Dignity beat Strong woman Do Bong Soon as most watched JTBC drama.

Falsify has very strong ratings which will never lose since k-netz think School 2017 makes fun of their schos with exaggerated stuff, and apparently The King Loves is not good enpugh.
Man Who Dies to live (it's a good drama, it has some real situations and it has comedy in it) will keep its reign probably for the next 3 weeks, especially considering the latest twist :D Seven Day Queen had the story of kings that has been super re-done and plus koreans hate those kings (read it on the soompi thread), but I have hope that ManHole will go somewhere. And from what I've gathered from Reunited Worlds, the plot is not moving with a clear direction in mind and the actors are not thought to be good.

KBS2 has another drama after Strongest Deliveryman and after that it has no idea if to continue the time-slot for next year (according to soompi).
I know for a fact that Age Of Youth 2 will not have that high ratings, but I'll be glad to see them at least crack 5%.
Save Me has a pitiful situation ahead, especially since the plot (and I really liked what I saw from episode 1) decides to be as honest and real about the situations. As for me, I love the idea that it's not shying away from reality

Kim Yoon-cheol is doing very well, but mostly he has to cover for her too much to shine himself.

I couldn't even finish her last drama despite my love for Park Bo-young.
I figured it has to be PD Kim who is keeping it together.
She was all over the place in her last drama too.

I'm only at eps 2. I'm not in a rush to catch up but will definitely finish it.

I'm trying to catch up now so I can concentrate on Age of Youth when it starts.

I'll be curious to see what you think of WOD! I just hope it sticks the landing.

2

IMO you still need a great writing , if the plot isn't good enough, the drama will fall flat, like SWDBS,so have to give the writer credit for WOD, it is kind of an unique plot, I would say, it's a makjang done right haha. Whereas SWDBS went totally overboard with the gangster plot-line, at the end I was only watching it for bong-bong's chemistry.

I think I'll still try it again later. Like someone said, they should stop with this American series remake unless they are really confident they can do well. It has been proven dramas with the original idea are always doing better than the remake, as long as it is good.

3

@seralovestteobokki
"they should stop with this American series remake unless they are really confident they can do well."

I don't think they have this level of self awareness.
I might be wrong but this show gives me the impression that the writer and director were too lazy to do proper research on criminal profiling, too lazy to understand and adapt from the original and assume that they can simply present a half baked take on criminal profiling and viewers will believe and go along with it.

4

I didn't try Falsify because I think I read somewhere that it is kind of like Chief Kim. No offense to Chief Kim but it was just something I couldn't get into despite trying several times.

What's the tone like in Falsify?

1
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Chief Kim was more on comedy workplace drama, so it was a lot lighter. Falsify on the other hand is in different genre. I think the reason why it gives some Chief Kim's vibes first because the lead actor is the same -Namgoong Min and the theme of the drama is also about underdog story. The tone is balanced between dark and humours and I love it so far. Nam Goongmin might not always the best actor, but his specialty to change swiftly his expressions & voices from serious to funny mode is what I love. Yoo Jun Sang is excellent as usual. The story is intriguing and quite well written at least for these 4 epi, so hopefully it will continue until the end.
