Jang Dong-gun, Park Hyung-shik team up for remake of Suits

Wow, that’s one hell of a leading cast. Jang Dong-gun (VIP) is coming back to dramaland five years after his last drama, A Gentleman’s Dignity, in the new KBS drama remake of the popular American series Suits. And the happy news doesn’t stop there: Rising star Park Hyung-shik (Strong Woman Do Bong-soon) will be the other half of the two-top drama, about a hotshot lawyer and the young genius he (illegally) takes under his wing.

Suits, which has been on for seven seasons on cable network USA, is a slick, fast-talking legal drama about New York City’s best closer (Harvey Specter), and the down-on-his-luck legal genius (Mike Ross) he hires as his associate… even though he’s never gone to law school. Mike is a college dropout who illegally takes the bar exam for other people to make money, so he’s a walking encyclopedia of legal knowledge, especially since he’s a genius who never forgets something he reads once. He ends up crashing a job interview for Harvey’s new associate position, and Harvey is so impressed that he hires him, and thus begins their risky partnership.

Jang Dong-gun has signed on to play Harvey’s counterpart, charismatic lawyer Choi Kyung-seo, a legend at the top law firm in Korea. Harvey’s character oozes charm and confidence, so Jang Dong-gun is pitch-perfect for the role, and a huge get for the remake. Park Hyung-shik has been confirmed to play the young genius associate, Go Yeon-woo, who learns the ropes under his new mentor’s tutelage. I’ve been impressed with Park Hyung-shik in all of his roles thus far, and I’m excited to see him try a different genre and character (say, not a chaebol).

Fingers are crossed for the remake to retain the same fast-paced, energetic feel of the original series. The writer, Kim Jung-min, is unknown, but I have high hopes for PD Kim Jin-woo, who directed the moody, visually strong Mystery Queen earlier this year (and was also the second PD on Healer). KBS Media (Seven Day Queen, The Best Hit) and Monster Union (Dreamcide) will collaborate on the production of the remake, which is being planned for a 2018 broadcast on KBS.

My brother and I started watching Suits and White Collar round abouts the same time, and I always get the 2 mixed up. Possibly because they are both set in New York and you wear white collars with suits. And one of the characters in White Collar is often refered to as The Suit, and his wife as Mrs. Suit. So I read this headline and saw the photo and got all excited about Hyung-shik playing a smooth talking conman who rocks 40s fashion. Somewhat disappointed to read the article and realize which show Suits was. 😥

No matter! Surely it will be good anyway! Right?

WOAHHH SUITS???? If this remake is as good as The good wife I'm up for it.
But as excited as I am about this remake I somehow can't picture Park Hyung Shik as Mike though but if he manages to pull it off then props to him but in the meantime I'll be waiting

Casting seems to be spot. But I got to admit, after Seo in Guks turn in Squad 38, I would have to see him take on Mike.

I have a lot of anti feelings for a suits remake. When I first started watching dramas I would look online fir details about when season two will air. My first show was 52 episodes and weekend mak jang but I still wanted more. . . Anyway, after watching dramas for awhile I started to see US shows for with all of the anti story flaws. The otp breaking up abs getting back together over 5 seasons, the same scenario every single episode it just seemed pedestrian and insulting. Suits is set in NY, you just need hours of legal instruction (including working with a lawyer)to take the bar exam to be a lawyer there. That every single season, I stopped watching in season 3 or 4 the whole plot revolves around whether or not people are going to find out. They could've just made an alma mater exception and moved on to be an interesting show, with him as a brilliant lawyer.

Somehow I'm feeling nervous about this project, because as much as I love the leads, I'm also scared that this remake would go wrong just like Criminal Minds does. Let's hope for the best that it wouldn't happened.

I'm excited about Park Hyung-shik being cast in another drama, too-- but seeing all this love for him in the comments and so little for Jang Dong-gun makes me feel kinda sad (and old), since it wasn't thatlong ago that JDG was considered Korea's top star (I believe he's still very popular, doing plenty of CFs, etc).

Let's just hope this casting coup reflects an especially well-written script!

I am not to post a reply and just lurk here but I noticed this too. I love JGD and he is the lead here and I also like PHS but I am kinda sad that JDG is given a little love in the comments...but I totally understand it because PHS just finished a successful drama and a lot of people are anticipating his next project...whether antis or fans. For fans, to prove that he is worthy of the word “actor” and not just an idol and for antis to nitpick his acting if they see any flaw.

God No!!!!! First of all I wish that Korea will stop remaking American Shows because they will fail every time. I can already tell that the female characters of Jessica, Donna, and Rachel will be written in a weak kdrama style, Harvey and Louis will not written as the dynamic characters that they are. Secondly, unlike the other commentators here I am not sold on Park Hyung Shik as an actor nor in the role of "Mike", he is too young and not the right fit in my opinion. He has only played rich, pretty boys. He characters in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Hwarang, and High Society were all the same to me.

actually, he hasn't always played rich boys. check out his previous works in Sirius, Nine x Travels Nine and What Happens to my Family - all starkly different from what he's currently known for. He has excellent potential and embraces all of his roles really well.

bless, Hyungsik in another major role. I know people doubt him because of his pretty boy typecast, but I'm so hyped to see him try something a little different. He needs time to branch out and test the waters, and I can't wait to follow him along his journey. More things to look forward to in 2018 c:

I'm starving for more Park Hyungsik, and eager to see him try out different roles. I'm happy to see him alongside with someone as legendary as Jang Dong-gun, and this series is probably one of the things I'm most looking forward to in 2018.
