Premiere Watch: While You Were Sleeping

Finally, it’s here! SBS’s new supernatural romance While You Were Sleeping premieres at last this Wednesday, after what seems like a year of waiting. Pre-produced dramas definitely know how to try a fan’s patience, don’t they? I can’t wait to see what’s in store in this latest project from one of my favorite drama writers, Park Hye-ryun (of I Hear Your Voice, Dream High, Pinocchio, and more).

While You Were Sleeping

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Supernatural romance
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours in total)

Reasons to watch: Writer Park Hye-ryun and leading actor Lee Jong-seok have teamed up for a third drama together, and while I don’t expect any new project of theirs to ever top I Hear Your Voice, if it’s as cute and watchable as Pinocchio, I’ll be a happy camper. This new series will also be a supernatural romance, and so far from the teasers it looks like it’ll have the writer’s usual mix of rom-com and thriller elements, bound together with a supernatural ability, of course. This one will belong to our heroine, played by Suzy, who has dream-premonitions of tragic events in other people’s lives.

I expect a bit of legal-procedural drama to be thrown in as well, since Lee Jong-seok is playing a prosecutor, and he and Suzy will presumably be running around saving people. I’m crossing all fingers and toes for there to be some chemistry between the leads, because I trust the writing to be solid, so it’s up to the actors to sell me on the romance. If we could just get a cross between Suzy in Dream High and Lee Jong-seok in Pinocchio or I Hear Your Voice, I think they have the potential to be adorable. Is that asking for too much, drama gods?

I hope the writer will cast other actor in next projects, I don't hate LJS but I don't want see him same roles again. He not pick project well, he choose everything too safe.

i bet many of the top hallyu actors wouldn't have done w-two worlds. when he gets the offer from park hye run there is no reason to reject them becoz they r so good.

But his role in this drama looks way different from the other two. He is dumb and awkward here

Also I don't think he is making safe choices.dramaland doesn't offer much variance as opposed to movies. He just played a murderous psychopath. That's hardly a safe choice. W was unconventional as well.

I hope so too. Lee Jongsuk needs to stop relying on the same formula.

1) what artist does not look for a safe project? (a good script)
2) Not all your papers are the same. I agree with what Sulli said
3) we can not judge that it is similar to any other role if not even the drama has been transmitted.
4) why not? It would be like asking a couple of writers to stop writing together just because their formula is a success. Would not that be a bit contradictory, right? If the double PHR and LJS works, then ... I want more projects together !!!!!

Agree... There are so many dissappointing dramas out there. So, when you see this kind of combination, you have the hope, it will be good...
Let´s hope, at least!! LOL
And yes... If is half so good like I hear your voice... let them do more and more and more...

I mean the writer knows LJS, which means she knows his acting style. She obviously likes his acting and trusts him to carry out his characters well, that's why she chooses him and vice versa for him agreeing to the projects. This isn't uncommon, even in Hollywood, directors and writers constantly choose the same actors to work with. Ex: Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio, David O. Russell & Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro.

I agree!! also he always has amazing chemistry with his counterpart. I feel like he works well with this writer.

Seriously? LJS doesn't pick project well and playing safe? Have you watch "W"? If you call that role were safe, i rest my case. He even played a psycopath in a movie v.i.p so he actually one of those rare actor who doesn't play safe

One thing I can trust is Lee Jong-seok to have chemistry. However, Suzy has almost no chemistry with any of her male counterparts. She is so stiff with them. So I am really hoping Lee Jong-seok can work his magic in the chemistry department.

This and Temperature of Love are the 2 drama I have been eagerly awaiting.

I personally think it's the other way around. Suzy always has chemistry with her co-stars from what I've seen. Kim Soo-hyun, Taecyeon, Kim Woo-bin, and Lee Seung-gi, Lee Jong-seok on the other hand has only ever had chemistry with Han Hyo-joo and Yoon Sang-hyun, in my opinion, so I'm hoping he can recreate some of that magic and Suzy can help him.

Personally I found wonderful chemistry from Lee Jong Suk with Kim Woo Bin, Lee Bo Young, Park Shin Hye plus those mentioned by you ...
As for Suzy, I have not seen any project from her, but I like what I've seen of them together in teaser and interviews. So, I just hope for the best of this new couple.

Suzy was only good with Kim Soo Hyun in my book. Lee Jong Suk was amazing with Lee Bo Young& Park Shin Hye. But his chemistry was forced with Han Hyo Joo which was the reason i left that drama halfway. I am not hoping for Suzy becoz her eyes dont express emotion and they are empty even her mouth is shouting and crying.

Honestly, I also had that feeling sometimes, but it was up to look at the BTS and feel that the chemistry between them is not bound at all. Now I see chemistry HHJ and LJS as the best. I feel that they did not have a real opportunity in the drama to prove it. I even read in an interview where HHJ regretted that they had no more romantic scene opportunities

Han Hyo Joo is a good actress. I don't think they had chemistry on screen. But I think it was supposed to be like that, because they were from different "worlds". I called it quits whilst trying ep 3, I finished it but,

Ep1: Who is the mysterious murderer(mm)?
Ep2: Totally forgets there is an 'mm', because the trailer and the first two episodes are probably interchangeable.
Ep3: Why was this episode's plot, non-existent?

Wow. I found his chemistry with HHJ so over the top that it overwhelmed nearly everything I've ever seen before. So interesting how different people interpret things differently.

Well... LJS made the miracle with Park Shin hye!! And this is a girl who had the most terrible awful kisses scenes in Dramaland, and who had also very pitiful characters, and with him and this writer... you already know... she was lovable in Pinocchio...
I am hoping for a similar miracle here... he he he heh e

I'm not a fan of Park Shin Hye but the only drama I have ever liked her in was Pinocchio. I thought she did a good job in it and she had nice chemistry with LJS. Was it the writer, LJS, or director? This show has 2 of the 3 so here's hoping Suzy will prove me wrong like PSH did!

The story doesn't grab my attention and after watching the trailer I won't watch this drama. I checked Lee Jong Suk dramas I've watched on my list, turns out :
◾ I can hear your voice : I dropped it
◾ Pinocchio : I remember having some good laughs but I don't remember any moments or OST from the drama : that means a lot and not in a good way
◾ W : too many plot twists and it went wrong towards the 2nd half : I still haven't watched the last 15min : how can they end it in a good way, guess I don't want to check out 😅
Conclusion : I hope Beanies who enjoyed the writer dramas will enjoy "While you were sleeping" but I won't be in the watching club 😅

I am on the fence with this one. I may just check it out because I have nothing better to wtch at the moment. But, this show is not on my "OMG. I must watch this now. Why isn't it Wednesday yet" list.

I enjoyed I Can Hear Your Voice for what it was, not great, but nice. And W was excellent until it couldn't keep up with its own story. My only concern comes from Suzy; LJS is fine enough. I remember really liking Dream High, and I assume she didn't bother me, since I can't remember otherwise. But man, she burned me in Uncontrollably Fond! So, if I am to watch this I need to wipe that drama from my memory.

I'm not sure by mentioning W here as Lee Jong-suk's drama or Park Hye-run's writernim drama, but W isn't written by Park.😊 W is written by the same writer of Three Musketeers, Queen In-hyun's man, and Nine Times Time Travel. Among all you mentioned of Park's drama, I enjoyed IHYV only, but to be honest it was all due to Lee Bo-young. I might have dropped if it wasn't her. Pinocchio - I checked few first epi but dropped it. Lee Jong-suk's effect doesn't seem to reach me lol. With this writer's drama, I'll watch if casts are my favs, and in this drama there's only Lee Sang-yeob that I love. Maybe will watch it later to check what kind of role he has.

After my post I began to write a reply to clarify that, I should have post it ^^' : The 3 dramas mentioned are Lee Jong Suk dramas I've watched, among them two are from the same writer. My conclusion mentioned the writer because of many Beanies trusting her in their posts :) .
Without dramabeans my knowledge of writers name and work would have remain so poor haha , not that I know a lot now hahaha.
I won't watch this drama but my main regret is that like you said Lee Sang Yeob is in it (I loved him in My wife will have an affair) , whereas I liked Lee Jong Suk in dramas I've seen him in but I've never really fangirl over him *cough* Tae Swoon, Kim Jung Hyun *cough*

LJS was the reason I could never finish both IHYV and Pinocchio, incidentally both shows were written by this writer... But, I loved W and loved him in it, so I'm going to conclude that it's the combination of him and this writer that I don't like, however I'm willing to give this show a chance just to see if I finally love him or W was just a fluke.

Dropped Pinocchio and I hear your voice too, but I fell in love with him in w, maybe its the character or writing, I love kang chul

It's weird because I liked Pinocchio and thought IHYV was okay, and I thought LSJ was fine in both (I probably liked Pinocchio more because I felt his acting, character, chemistry was better than in IHYV, and I liked the family stuff) but in both cases, what made the shows for me were the leading ladies (surprisingly, in Pinocchio's case because I'm fairly meh on Park Shin Hye) and the supporting casts. So yeah, I'm really on the fence with this one. Plus, it's weird because I like the writer, and am fine with the writing style while watching, but looking back find it really annoying. I'm probably not making any sense at this point lol.

What a list of antagonist reactions! It is intersting.. people liking more this one than the other one... or the other way around. I have not watched W yet, but if I do, I will do it because LJS. Ok, I confess, I am under his effect... At the beginning because he looks handsome to me, but also because he touches me with his acting... At least me! So, I am part of the poll, giving my own contribution.
I will be watching... hoping it would be good, like @michykdrama said... LOL!

Finally, it airs this week. While waiting this drama (im)patiently I re-watched I Hear Your Voice and Pinocchio this past week. I realized there are many actors who acted as side/minor characters and extras in IHYV appeared in Pinocchio too. I think While You Were Sleeping will be populated by familiar faces too.
