Yoo Seung-ho may fall in love with an android in MBC’s I’m Not a Robot

MBC’s I’m Not a Robot is having some issues with casting, but let’s hope this one sticks! After Dongha (Suspicious Partner) turned it down, Yoo Seung-ho (Ruler—Master of the Mask) has been offered the lead role in the upcoming sci-fi romance drama as the main character who has a severe allergy to humans and lives an isolated life. Yoo was also offered the drama I am Love, but recent reports say that he’s considering I’m Not a Robot favorably.

The female lead role was also initially out to Girl’s Day’s Minah (Beautiful Gong Shim), but she ultimately refused. Thankfully, Chae Soo-bin (Strongest Deliveryman), who may even be a better choice for the role, has signed on. So we may be looking at a potential Chae Soo-bin and Yoo Seung-ho pairing, which would make my heart sigh in contented joy.

The character that Yoo Seung-ho is up to play is so allergic to everything, including other people, so he’s never been able to date a human girl. So when he meets a female robot, he begins experiencing the joys of first love. And in typical K-drama fashion, he’ll also be the chairman of the board and largest shareholder for a chaebol conglomerate. Meanwhile, Chae Soo-bin will play a passionate young woman who is preparing for an entrepreneurial venture.

I’m a little iffy on the writer, Kim Sun-mi, whose biggest credit is Shine or Go Crazy, but I’m totally onboard with PD Jung Dae-yoon, who made W—Two Worlds an enjoyable and pulse-pounding if completely confusing ride.

Wednesday-Thursday drama I’m Not a Robot is slated for 16 episodes, and is supposed to begin broadcasting sometime in October or November, which is pretty soon. Chop chop with the casting—time is ticking!

Hahahahahaha. How perfect that he is also going to be the chairman of the board of a chaebol conglomerate, especially considering that we all know just how much that level of power and wealth drives out the humanity in the average chaebol, leaving them almost 'robot-like'. So he will basically be a robot pretending to be a human acting like a robot. This will be gold!!!

I'm also soooo looking forward to the dear robot meeting a female of his kind and falling in love. What a romance it would be!!!!

This pairing I absolutely would kill for. The drama's premise and MBC - not so much. I really want YSH to start picking good projects that would establish him further as a leading man. Eventually I think he should move on to Chungmuro with just a few dramas here and there.

I dunno - I was hoping for him to be casted in this somehow. But now I have my doubts if that's a good deal or not. Either way, the usual rules apply - if he's in, so am I.

Yes he does have a habit of picking projects that tend to frizzle out in the middle and don't really do very well in terms of ratings even if his acting in them is great. I would like for him to choose his projects more carefully. So far he's not doing very well with his pickings.

His drama quality isn't great, that's true. But his ratings are up there undoubtedly. He's only been lead in 2 - Remember and Ruler. Both did really well as far as numbers go. The drama's quality tho is a completely different topic.

So who is acting as a robot here? Maybe second female lead as a robot? I don't think CSB's character is a robot.
Anyway, this drama might turn out good or bad but Yoo Seung-ho in romcom is a good change after he did many melodrama. YSH is also a rating magnet so the rating might not be suck regardless good or bad it turns out later.

Yeah I think the second female lead is a robot because I heard that Hwang Seung-eon was offered the part and most of her past characters are described as attractive.

I don't really see Yoo Seung Ho as an actor who has great romantic chemistry with his female leads but he a good actor, hopefully the writer will do a better script this time.

I also don't understand why people keep dissing Chae Soo Bin for taking acting roles, so what if she took 3 in a year? She's s rookie actress, she has to work harder than idols who get lead roles just like that. At least she never double booked or left one drama to do another.

It's also interesting to see how when someone like Nam Joo Hyuk, who has not even 1 percent of Chae Soo Bin's talent in acting, gets 2 drama lead roles just 4-5 months apart, on top of doing Moon Lovers right before that, people defend him getting the BOTWG lead role and don't say we get sick of seeing him so often even if some criticise his acting. But when it's even a talented actress, for some becomes 'why is an actress (whose job is to act, not be idol or cf model) acting so much? We got sick of seeing her!'

I don't see anyone was that happy with Nam Joo-hyuk casting in BOTWG in this site or maybe I missed anything. As far as I recall, most of us waited for him to drop it during the casting process and even until the end of drama, his acting was still very much criticised. I won't go to that extent to say he has not even 1% of CSB's talent, because I remember liking him in some roles although I also think he is not a good actor, and not a lead material either. CSB on the other hand is not that amazing as well, but she had some remarkable roles from her debut days.

At the same time, I don't see the criticsms towards Chae Soo Bin taking 3 lead roles in this year that much either. There are only few questioning her often appearances this year but based on what I read, they have some points too. Regardless how talented someone is, seeing him/her too much in one year can also cause some fatigue. I also don't think many people saying she isn't a good actress so it is safe to say in majority's opinion she is one talented rising actress. She is right to take to take every single opportunity given to her, why should she turn down such offers especially she is yet to become a solid leading actress yet.If both her and YSH agree to do this, the possibility to become a rating success is there, and if it turns well, will give more luck to her career.

Anyway, all of us are free to express out opinions, and we also agree to disagree as well. If we are tired to see her in our screen, just skip or save this drama for later. I don't think it is something so wrong to say what we feel, and it's not in direspectful way either.

Soo Bin doesnt have the luxury of turning thing down yet. She still very much rookie. There are many small roles actors that appear in every single drama and movie, but they feel lucky because they have job. It takes years for someone to get a lead role or someone might never get a lead role. She got offer, its not like she bribe for it. She might be hot this year, she might be getting nothing next year. Her roles are quite different from each other so she is getting experience and building her resume.

Kim So Hyun did one movie, one drama, one drama special, cameo one movie, one drama last year and she is already famous.

Why drag her into this and how is that even a comparison. That's like saying Park Shin Hye was everywhere last year because she did 2 cameos, a full length drama and a movie. Top stars doing cameos is the most natural thing. They add to the production and not vice versa.

I despise whataboutism like this.

Nam Joo Hyuk is a terrible lead actor. And there were comments about him when he got the role in BOTWG too. Just because there were a bunch of fangirls in the mix doesn't change that fact.

And as viewers, we can absolutely tire of seeing Chae Soo-bin. Yes, she's a lot better than NJH (and that's a very low bar), but she's not that good either. You're talking as if we're getting the opportunity to see Bae Doona perform (who is a legit great actor). It's tiring seeing the same actors in lead roles back to back. They don't bring enough to their performances to differentiate.

And it's especially tiring when there are a good dozen other actresses who could be given the opportunity, but aren't because some other actor is flavor of the month for now. Especially since it's well known how the Korean Entertainment industry works in terms of favoritism.

It's not like this criticism only comes up for bad actors, or only Chae Soo-bin. Nor does it only come up for actresses (even if fangirls tend to skew the criticism that should be coming towards males).

I enjoy Hwang Jung-eum, but I was getting tired of seeing her to soon back to back when she went on her spree recently. Same with Jang Nara. Same with Ji Soo. And they're all decent (Ji Soo) to good actors (the other two).

And I especially make it known when it involves crap actors like Gong Myung or Seo Kang Joon. The latter of whom I've been harping on about for a while now, because it's obvious this guy isn't getting his lead roles thanks to his ability.

This is a site for drama addicts basically. That means we watch a lot. It also means we're exposed to the same faces too often sometimes, and it gets bland and boring.

Thank you for this comment! There is such a thing as overexposed and that is exactly what Chae Soo Bin at present. And she's not the only one. There are rookie stars from time to time who think doing a lot of shows means success or something but it really doesn't. Working without rest exposes your flaws as is happening with Soo Bin. She's good but her performances are now feeling repetitive because there is not enough gap between each performance.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

ok, let's see you in the next post when a guy gets 3 roles in 6 months.

Rebel and SDM are very different dramas, one is a sageuk and the other is modern, her roles are not even alike and I find neither is her performance, in Rebel she hardly even appeared until the second half and the drama itself was not that promoted in Korea. SDM is on a late time slot that isn't even weekday, so this whole 'she is overexposed' thing is not as much as it sounds. Also even though you say you criticise and maybe that's true, I don't see anyone giving this same kind of criticism to the guys who take lots of work at once. Except for Seo Kang Joon but that was because his dramas keep flopping except for one.

Everyone has their own opinion and it's ok not to like her for whatever reason, but we can also give our observations on the kind of comments made and what people say. That's what I did.

Ji Soo was called out for doing too many dramas and so has Nam Joo Hyuk. Most rookie actors don't do back to lead roles. They do a bunch of secondary characters and then one lead role. Even Dong Ha turned this down. He clearly didn't want to overexpose himself. Kim Ji Won didn't go around doing a bunch of lead roles when she was a rising star post both Heirs and DOTS.

CSB is being criticized on all forums for doing too many dramas because it's a fact and not because anyone is malicious.

No one was happy with Joo Hyuk casting in Bride so I don't understand your need to drag him into this. And CFs are a popularity marker and earn more money than dramas in the long run. Which is why Won Bin has stayed so popular till now without a single project in forever. Actors try to gain popularity so that they can do CFs and not the other way round.

....to see the day when product advertisement is openly said to be more important than acting roles on dramabeans...

Also I talked about Nam Joo Hyuk not only for his acting but to say that no one specifically talked about how they were sick of seeing him in 3 dramas in less than 8 months, 2 of which was in lead roles, the way they do with CSB here. That's all, don't get mad.

Acting roles feed product advertising. The more popular you are as an actor the more CFs you will get. Hence Jun Ji Hyun and Suzy are Queens in South Korea. I don't understand the problem you have with CFs honestly. Acting pays less than doing CFs and no one does anything for charity.

I know you want to defend Chae Soobin but don't realise that the male actors you mentioned are not comparable at all. You might have hallucinated Seo Kang Joon's presence fbut the guy only did two dramas last year, and one of them was a supporting role.

Nam Joohyuk have appeared alot last year as well but most of them were minor roles. The span of time between his two leading roles in WLKBJ and BOTWG might have been less than eight months but its common for an actor to do one drama per year.

While in the case of CSB, she appeared in THREE dramas in 2017 and the year hasn't even ended, and she's gonna take on her fourth one. Obviously people are going to get sick! It's not like she's in a small role either; she's the lead in all of them.

Yes you mentioned Ji Soo, but I have seen a fair share of people criticizing him as well, saying that they realise his acting is nothing special and that they are sick of him etc. And even then he hasn't had a single lead role except for the drama special he did with Kim Sohyun.

Now if you insist on dragging a male actor, maybe you can consider Namkoong Min. Since the time span between Falsify and Chief Kim was not that long. But then perhaps people don't mention or criticize him for "appearing too often" because his acting is good enough to differentiate his roles unlike your fave?

And he was overshadowed by Shin Jae Ha in that drama special even though I liked him.

Nam Goong Min waited for over a decade to get his first lead role. His success is fair and he's on a whole other level than CSB.

0

I agree on Nam Joo Hyuk. At first I liked him when I first saw him in School 2015, but then I realized that he is more suited to something like SNL-Korea, not that I watch that show. But I think his humorous energy is more suited to something like that.

I also think that maybe YSH not suit to rom-com yet. Based on Ruler when the main characters in their teens, YSH wasn't really good at delivering the funny scene. He's a great actor and I want him to explore rom-com too but not like this (this drama seems hurried). I want him doing drama when everything look perfect, the writers, production team (mbc isn't in good condition this time) and the female lead. I want him to start a rom-com with an actress that best in rom-com even it's that's mean she's a noona to him, so he could learn from them.

As for Nam Joo Hyuk, I'll pass all the shows he takes a lead role in. Altho' if NJH were the lead in this and it was funny, I will probably watch it anyway because he does well with comedy. Sometimes I thought ML:SHR was a comedy because he was a bit too happy, like Snowwhite's Prince/'dwarf', no way at 1.88m: Happy.

Romance is Seungho's weakest point though. He does have natural chemistry with his costars, don't get me wrong, but the chemistry doesn't really feel romantic? He looks great with his costars but when it comes to scenes involving romance, it just felt a bit flat due to the lack of romantic chemistry. At least in my opinion. But his brilliant acting skills in other aspects do make up for that weakness. Maybe it's just his lack of experience when it comes to the romance genre. It'll be interesting to see him (if he really takes up this project) tackling on the rom-com genre and see growth in his skills as a romantic male lead.
