Drama viewership ratings for the week of Sept. 25-Oct. 1, 2017

Temperature of Love is doing pretty darn well for itself over in the beginning of the week, but admittedly, it has very little competition at the moment. That means that the only drama dominating any of the weekday time slots is Hospital Ship, though Lord knows why. Is it just the Ha Ji-won pull? Who’s legitimately enjoying this show? (I’m seriously not judging, I’m just curious!)

Poor, poor Manhole, though. Not only did it log miserable ratings during its entire run, it turns out that it logged the most miserable ratings ever. Yes, Manhole actually broke a record, but it’s not a good one—since the Big 3 started recording ratings in the 90s, they’ve had no show pull in the kinds of numbers Manhole has. Wamp wamp waaamp.

Age of Youth 2 is at least seeing a decent bump, which is always a nice reward for a good show. But with weekend cable options sparse now that Rescue Me has ended (*sniff*), it’s not too surprising—otherwise, SBS’ weird move with splitting Sister Is Alive into four (4) episodes a day seems to be paying off. I wonder if they’ll continue to be experimental in the future, now that their experiment has paid off so well.

Yes I'm legit curious how Hospital Ship is still reigning. But I guess Koreans really do enjoy medical and slice of life dramas. Given the amount of praise for WYYS, I expected it to crush Hospital Ship so it's really a surprise.

Hahaha! There are quite few of us beanies here who are watching Hospital Ship too... though none of us can really explain why.. Is there a thing like visual substance addiction & abuse?! Is that what HS is sublimely doing?!

Kang Min-Hyuk.. Lee Seo-won.. Ha Ji-won.. the Sunsets.. the scenery..

Sprinkle HJW on top of this combo :D .

Seems like most are Mild Masochist. Myself included. I've given it below avg. rating and there is nothing in the show that stands. Mary Sue at centre and just no-name characters. out op world patients and a BIG romantic SHIP.
Even if a character die in this show no one gonna show remorse/hearache or tears.

I am enjoying Hospital Ship because I like HJW's character - I feel anyone with RBF can relate to the misunderstood focused intensity character.

I love ship life and I love islands and the sea, so seeing an alternative Korean scenery is refreshing to me (non-Korean).

And I like how the drama is "uncomplicated" - the heroine has ambitions but has family and professional problems, the hero has family and gf problems and likes the girl, the 2nd lead has declared he will steal the girl...

So I'm good with watching the slice of life and not having my heart torn into shreds (ToL) or having near heart-attacks and angst every week (Save Me).

JTBC, let’s split the last 2 episodes of Age of Youth 2 into 8 to bump the ratings if this will guarantee that we get a season 3.

I think all cable did split their shows like what the big 3 had done recently. Just that they don't bother to report their show's rating as 4 parts just because they had 3 commercial breaks in between for example. 😅

I have a strong feeling this show will get another season. So, don't worry? 😅

The ratings of all parts will be reported. For example, SBS Temperature of Love runs for 35 minutes without ad. The rating for that run reported as Part 1 rating.

After the commercial break, Temperature of Love runs for another 35 minutes without ad. The rating for that run reported as Part 2 rating.

So if JTBC applied this and AoY2 had 3 commercial breaks for each episode, all 4 parts will be reported.

Sorry if this is confusing. 😅

Today is Sunday, time to give thanks.

I am thankful for all the sponsors so Age of Youth can turn more profit so we can, of course, get a season 3 (again, broken record)

Kamsahamnida Gold Peak Tea (I will pick one up next time I am at the convenience store)
Kamsahamnida Sexy Cookie (not sure what this is but I'm intrigued)
Kamsahamnida Kia (I'm sold when Sung-min's at the wheel)
Kamsahamnida Commontown and Toms Toms (will stop by for a large drink next time visiting Korea)
Kamsahamnida other sponsors with names only in Korean (heck, don't you know this show has a major int'l fan base? Change your logo stat!)

All drama writers take note: this is how you write a PPL into your story
1) Every girl shopping at Sexy Cookies, it showcases the products and that the store has many styles to satisfy different personal tastes (even a junior line), it has ongoing sales, and helpful sales staff who can take measurements at a moment's notice.
2) Kia is a car that saves lives, especially the two characters we care deeply about, while one is blinded by his desire for the other.

Yeay for Age of Youth ❤ Hope it will reach 5% next week.

I think the real competiton in Mon-Tues slot will begin when Witch's Courtroom starts. Curious if Temp of Love will stay as the winner or not. It would be nice to see if all three drama are close to each other.

Aside from 20th Century, Mad Dog will also start next week. ❤

ToL has loyal viewers, I think. The ratings keep increasing in every ep. I was a bit worried about the WC after knowing PD and writer. And usually legal drama is moderately well managed by SBS. But I hope the rating can be decent enough, for the sake of YHM who became first lead for the first time in terrestrial broadcast for weekday slot. MD also has to work extra hard, WYWS responses is positive and it seems it wouldn't be difficult to achieve double digit ratings. HS also has its own audience, because it has been running for one month.
So, good luck for both dramas!

manhole was disaster. aside from the bad writing, the loyal viewer to the show itself never really ship for the OTPs romance. it's a big no no. if viewer lost interest to the romance in K-drama, it is just recipe for poor rating. and many people think that one of the reason, how ridiculously and unfair it may sound, was the appearance of the female lead, and how her character was portrayed, did not help her with it.

i watched my golden life, and confused with the rating. my father is strange was very good and worth all the highest rating it got. my golden life is okay but not even reach the same standard with MFIS. how come the rating is as much MFIS was ?

In three weeks, Because This Is My First Life will airing. i just hope it will reached 7% as much as Strong Woman Do Bong Soon.

My Golden Life - it is the normal rating for KBS weekend drama regardless it is good or not. Put this drama in MBC slot, it will be lower. Similarly Man Who Sets The Table will get high rating too, if it is in KBS.

I think this drama reached 30% on Sunday slot last week if I'm not mistaken. The true success for KBS if the rating reaches 40% above but as far as I recall for the last 5 years, the last time their drama reached this number was What Happens In My Family. So maybe these days, if it reaches above 35% it is considered as a success (Father Is Strange reached above 35% once or twice).
This is the highest rating though-not average rating.

My Golden Life is winning thanks to the KBS slot. Plus it has no competition in the slot. Man Who sets the table and the other weekend lot are in different slots much later in the night. Also, maybe people like insufferable Makjang. You know so Makjang that you can't ignore it sort of thing. I did that with You are Too Much, just wanted to watch in disbelief how far fetched the story line can get and how illogical, infuriating shit characters can pull. It grates your nerve but for some weird magical reason, you cannot look away.

Lee Jong Suk is not on Ha Ji Won level in terms of stardom but if I compare the two shows, hospital ship totally sinks in terms of quality for good reason. That is my personal opinion though. Also Jong Suk ruffled feathers when he delayed his military enlistment, knetz tore him apart for it along with his film content controversies.

If a drama is liked by the public, they'll watch it no matter what the actors controversies are. Otherwise how is W a hit with Han Hyo Joo? Or Descendants of the Sun a hit with Song Hye Kyo (tax controversy?)

Maybe, who knows to be honest what the audience feel when they watch a show. All I know is, things got bad with the scene controversy in V.I.P and then his enlistment issue at the same time and it just wasn't pretty. And it happened right when he started to promote While You Were Sleeping after his film release. Maybe, it matters less if a considerable amount of time has passed or maybe they don't care at all. At any rate, next week will tell what will happen to the show, as in will it rise or not.

I'm shocked Hospital Ship was able to get highest rating at all even before WYWS came. No one thought it would, the male lead is a nobody, the story was whatever, the writers not a star, all it has is Ha Ji Won.

Now I'm shocked that even if its only for one week it has higher ratings than WYWS which came with so much publicity, stars and a hyped writer.

Chill, would you? Why fight over some numbers. Lets enjoy all shows. Which LJS drama has ever premiered at 10%? It has always been either 7%(IHYV) or 8%(W). Tgat way you know tbe drama is good and not pused by hype.
We have seen time and again star power doesnt equate to ratings. Otherwise big stars would never have flop projects.
@pigsnout WYWS only relied on star power and writer. It didnt get 1/4 th of the promotions UF or other pre produced dramas did. It surprises me when some international viewers said it was hyped before. Like where? We were complaining of lack of promos. That and strong competition from Hospital ship resulted in these ratings.

@pigsnout Hospital ship's ratings are hardly surprising. First it started quiye some time ago thus has a faithful fanbase whereas WYWS only started recently and the promos started very late. Second Koreans love medical dramas, even wacky ones like Dr stranger(even in DS there was no major star power. LJS was new) third, Ha Ji Won is a veteran in dramalland.
I am surprised, that you are surprised by its ratings.

We are not Koreans, so we will never know how their taste is. Hospital Ship may not have star writers or cast (except HJW), but it is a healing drama which maybe caters to audience of a larger age range. This is similar to Doctors last year, where people couldn't understand why it was so successful and most of them prefer Beautiful Mind. WYYS has more of a thriller element so maybe it attracts young people more and they prefer to watch it online.

Besides, Lee Jongsuk is not a rating magnet. His dramas typically do not go over 15% (not counting School 2013 and ICHYV because I doubt he was famous enough back then). They are more popular among the younger audience and has higher views online.

About this weight issue, I read one article - interview with actress Lee Tae-im.. She said she did an extreme diet before started Woman of Dignity and lost around 10kg. But because of public concern & she also suffered side effects -she started to gain weights again. Fortunately she realized it before too late, and took the criticisms in a positive way. I was surprised at first when I saw how thin she was during the early epi of WOD. Hope her story can inspire others too. She wasn't look as bad as Uee, but already suffered side effects. I noticed Lee Soo-hyuk also lose weights and Song Jae-rim too ( maybe mary needs to cook more for his oppa, his Apple butt seems already disappeared lol 😂

Required fields are marked *

Exactly.

I do think it's difficult being a public figure, getting appraised and judged all the time for how you look and what you say. One really needs a sensible head on the shoulders and not get overly affected.

It' not uncommon for actors to lose weight before filming just to look nicer on screen. The rigors of live shoot also mean they naturally lose weight over the course of filming. However, most put it back on after the drama ends.

But some don't stop. Spurred by compliments on a sharper jawline or slimmer face, they continue to lose weight or never regain back what they have lost.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Agreed that they should put health first no matter what. The public scrutiny is harsh on people who are even slightly chubby. I remember back in August Kang Sora had put in just a tiny bit of weight and looked healthy instead of super skinny. Dear God, the comments, I felt like crying after reading them and I am not Kang Sora. No wonder people are so overly conscious about their weight. I think the goal should be to stay healthy. So, Uee and LJG, I know they appear skinny but who knows maybe they do maintain that in a healthy way and are within healthy limits. If not, I hope they put on some weight. And no matter how hard it is, I hope they can ignore the so called people that bad mouth online based on appearance. They really have nothing better to do other than that.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm as skinny as both of them. I do need to gain weight too. I was never into diet fads but never gained weight. Without good writing not even a good actor can sell a character/story. I've always maintained this line of view and thankfully i dropped both on right time.

There's a difference between naturally skinny and 'unnaturally' skinny. I've known people who are just very very slim their entire lives. Then there are those who aren't that skinny but intentionally lose a lot of weight.

To me, Uee and LJK were already slim by any standard. Maybe Uee wasn't as rake thin as the usual kpop idol but I think she looked healthy and great. Now, they look skeletal to me.

2

Required fields are marked *

I also like it more if LJK put on some weight, but I 100% sure he is not unhealthy in any way... he is an action and martial art actor, so lighter weight make it easier for him to do his action scenes...in addition he is a dancer and he practice dancing regularly... as active as he is, it's not easy to gain weight... I know you like masculAR actors @outofthisworld but not every actor should have a muscular body and six-pack to consider a good (or attractive) actor

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Haha...that's not true. I don't care if an actor is muscular or not and I certainly don't think that muscles = good or attractive actor.

If an actor I like happens to be muscular or have a six abs, so be it. I actually prefer less muscles, more lean and toned. Anyway, that's not the point.

I always think that many actors and idols are too thin. However, I acknowledge that's how they have to 'maintain' their looks for Korean showbiz. I have pointed out Lee Jun Ki and Uee because these are celebs who I've noticed over the years and they looked perfectly fine in the past. Now, they don't. At least in my eyes. Uee, especially is in danger zone.

I have enjoyed the first week of While You Were Sleeping (Sandra Bullocks face keeps appearing when I think of the name), hopefully the next few weeks will be on par or more thrilling.

I want to get on the hype train of Age of Youth so bad but just can't get into it. I've tried so many times and dropped it a couple of episodes in. I guess this is a drama that is just not going to work for me.

Don't worry, there were a few of us clamoring for more story in School 2017 in the thread. But I get your point: there wasn't much of a discussion going on because everyone (me included) was raving about Tae Swoon.

Also, Hospital Ship isn't getting recapped, so it may seem like few beanies like it, but that's not necessarily the case (Maybe I'll watch a few today. I do enjoy it, and I have no sageuk to watch at the moment).

I mostly agree with you. Drama is art, and as such it's subjective. You like what you like. It's hard to remain objective. In DB's defence, I think these threads give people an opportunity to voice their opinions and not just hear from the DB crew. I haven't seen people bullying others because of their opinion, and I hope that hasn't or will not happen. That would be a problem.

An interesting point to note is that although DB is pretty much a K-drama site, many of us watch and post about Dramas from other countries, let alone the K-dramas that aren't mentioned or recapped here. While the discussion may not be as lively as the dramas featured here, it's good that it still happens.

School Porn was c grade content but taken as some masterpiece here.

Which drama are you referring to? School 2017?

With the old female and young male pairs, are you referring to Reunited World and Temperature of Love? I'm pretty sure there have been lots of people talking about those couples, although Reunited World wasn't that great of a drama (subjectively speaking), so there might be less discussion with that.

I don't care how you grade and criticised any drama but I didn't find any porn element in School 2017. Or maybe your definition of porn is different? It sounds so sensational according to my ears when you use 'porn' word to diss some romance in drama and to label a drama without any mouth kissing as porn sounds too exaggerate.

MDL rating just shows public oppinion about drama's qaulity between international fans and popularity of each drama . Ofcourse as i said already everything is baised on your test and there is not any solid information not in this site nor in MDL.

are you referring to School 2017? there was nothing even remotely sexy about that drama, so if so, that's really weird that you would associate porn with it. if you're not referring to School 2017, idk then. can't really think of any recent popular high school dramas that had anything but modest romances.

It's like referring to some shows based on food as food porn or actors with mustache as porn stache (hi Kim Nam-gil). School based shows are school porn.
At least that's how I take it since like 10yrs ago?

Lol, I've never heard of that before. Food porn I get. However, I believe people refer to certain mustaches as "porn staches" because they make the person look creepy and like an 80s porn actor. There is a TV Tropes article about it, lol. I've NEVER heard of "school porn" before... unless you're talking about weird schoolgirl/boy porn (aka pedophilia) or something.

0

Like I said that's how I take it. I'd give the commenter the benefit of the doubt even "If" the real intention was to make an insult.

Porn stache at this site was
mostly referred to Kim Nam-gil's mustache as a joke.

No I don't refer to the school series as anything pedophilia or insulting but merely a long series with good looking young oppas to squee over.

I've always have trouble explaining my thoughts because English is a 3rd language for me.

0

i've never heard of that before o_o food porn, earth porn, etc. i've heard used before. i just find it weird to use school and porn in the same sentence in that way because i've only ever heard them used together to literally refer to schoolgirl/boy pornography. could be a language difference, i suppose.

Watching Hospital Ship too. Why?
1. I have been interested in the medical profession but the medical profession does not like me. Ha ha. So let's say i am watching it vicariously.
2. The Hospital Ship as a concept and why in SK, it is a form of military enlistment. Until this drama, I did not have an idea that there is this form of mandatory enlistment for doctors in SK. We can actually have a concept for a future drama here.
3. My country could very well have a hospital ship as we are an archipelago
4. The SCENERY! Been live-watching dramas for 4 years now and what I see in Hospital Ship is a breath of fresh (air) view.

So there, I hope I have convinced some to check it out too!

I really wish WYWS gets more rating in the coming weeks. It's such a good drama which deserves more praises and more appreciation from people. Although I feel like I am a bad omen for shows since most dramas I liked had lackluster ratings. :D I am skeptical of the rating system though and whether a success of a show depends anymore on TV rating 'is' a question that comes to mind. I feel like maybe older generation tend to stick to TV, while young viewers who have work/study commitment would watch the shows in their free time online, which is more convenient these days..I wish the prime time channels start counting their online rating too maybe...that would show how popular which one is in real.

Can't believe BOTWG pulled in better ratings than Argon! I guess one can criticize NJH all we want for his acting but the boy brings in the audience because that show had terrible writing. I'm surprised CWH doesn't have more appeal since she's so big in Chungmro.

It only averaged slightly higher though - BOTWG was really hyped and tvN surely expected better ratings from it. I don't really think NJH is much of a ratings draw.

Probably that show benefited from NJH coming off of WFKBJ? I don't think NJH is a bad actor per say. I think he's getting better--admittedly there are a lot of young actors who might be shining brighter than him atm. Habaek was a really tough character to play and I don't think it suited him. We'll see what the future holds.

No, he's bad. We don't need to lower the bar here or make excuses. He makes Shin Se-kyung seem like a good actor, and she's merely decent.

That drama was utter crap. All of the lead cast was outright bad, except for Shin Se-kyung who was merely mediocre and Lim Ju-Hwan who was the only solid actor of the bunch.

And what really hurt it even more than the writing was that a lot of these actors, except Lim Ju-Hwan, could not elevate the material. They lack that skill because of their poor ability. It felt like watching some kids trying to act and fail.

I'm not making excuses for him nor am I lowering the bar. I did state that there are actors his age who are better than he is and he had difficulty with the character Habaek. Having said that, I appreciate him as an actor. I liked him in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo and I wouldn't mind giving his future works a chance. Hopefully he improves over time. Not everyone starts off amazing with both skill and projects. As you pointed out, Bride of the Water God had other problems outside of him. Not every drama is going to be amazing--by my standards at least--but I can sometimes appreciate those that are not so great for one reason or another.

Eh chungmuro actresses does not necessarily mean good ratings. Look how park sodam flopped and was criticized for her acting, similar to how shim eunkyung in nodame. I think the style of acting is very different for films and tv, and very few actress can master both (like bae doona, jeon doyeon).

I expected Argon to be better though, since people said Chun Woohee is picky about scripts.

Right and good shows doesn't necessarily mean good ratings. Comparing the two shows doesn't make much sense. They are totally different with actors in different levels and 16 eps vs 8 eps.

"Argon" is the highest rating 8 eps drama to date.
(Rating success imo).

It's true good shows don't mean good ratings but good ratings mean money and popularity and exposure. Good show means a pat on the back and better luck next time. I agree with the comment that chungmuro actresses don't easily transition to television. Though Bae Doona is originally a drama actress who graduated to films and not the other way.

I think Joo Hyuk despite received a lot of criticism from knet and inet is attractive enough to draw in an audience. I think Bride is the most watched kdrama this year on some Taiwanese web portal. He's hallyu star material not much of an actor.

Both Bae Doona and Jeon Do-yeon debut on tv anyway. They went back and forth in the earlier part of their career.
Son Ye-jin,Shim Eun-kyung, Han Ye-ri, Jung Yumi, Gong Hyo-jin, Moon Geun-young, Kim Hye-soo, Go Ah‑sung, Kang Han-na etc are pretty good in both imo.

I think the actresses that are having a bit of trouble with the transition are those that started their career in Chungmuro like Park So-dam etc.
I love Kim Go-eun but I think she is better off in Chungmuro where she kickass with her range and I'm glad she is going back.

I think Joo Hyuk is CF material and not much of an actor.

To be fair, Argon only had 8 episodes. If it had 16 episodes, I'm quite sure the ratings would've increased over the weeks. Also, despite having lower ratings, it trended #1 on naver after the finale. Comments were full of praises and many wanted a 2nd season.

I watched Argon, and it's a very well made drama. Realistic and sobering portrayal of the newsroom, tight script and no acting holes at all. I just hope there will be english subs soon.

I have nothing against HJW, she us popular in Korea but may be it's just me, i tried watching 3 of her shows including 2 she acted with well known popular actors, i had to drop it ~ for HS, i tried 3 episodes, drop it in the middle of 3rd episode ~

Hospital Ship is a very easy watch - despite the life and death situations, there's basically no tension and you know everything will work out. I can see why it's doing ok but WYWS will probably pick up and overtake it soon. HS is frustrating atm because the second leads (two walking cliches basically) are dragging the show down imo so perhaps viewers will get bored and tune into WYWS instead. I'll still be watching both (I'm hanging onto HS bc I really like the main couple, don't care for it generally).

I hope AOY will get another season - JTBC might consider it because the show is quite low budget, the ratings are up this season (4%! yay!) and they could turn it into a franchise for the channel like tvN has done with some of their series. *fingers crossed*

Since when did any LJS drama start from 10% . LJS dramas usually always start from 7%(IHYV) or 8%(W). That way when the ratings increase you know the drama is good. Also time and again it has been proved star power has nothing to do with drama ratings plus WYWS was never hyped like UF and the genre too is fantasy as opposed to Hospital ship's more "mainstream" genre.

2049 ratings calculates viewership among 20- to 40-year-olds, taking into account factors that traditional ratings preclude, like streaming and social media. Advertisers therefore pay most attention to the 2049 ratings as it accurately reflects the popularity of dramas.

How interesting would it be to have this 2049 rating system side-by-side of the traditional rating we get weekly at DB! It is undeniably crucial to have a rating system to include data from streaming sites to truly reflect viewers' preferences.

It is surprising to see that compare to the traditional ratings that Manhole's numbers are even lower among the 20-40 demographic since I thought at this point it would be mostly Jaejoong's fans who are sticking with the show. Does he have lots of ahjumma fans?

Would you please share where we can read about the 2049 ratings?

What does the numbers signify? Who reports these numbers - do you have a link? Advertisers would absolutely not use numbers that reflect both tv shares - i.e., eye-balls that actually see their ads - and "social media" for any thing. To be honest it sounds like it must be made up by a magazine or something.

In the US Nielsen reports 18-49 ratings - the number of people in that age bracket that watch a show overnight - because advertisers pay for this group. It is interesting if Korean TV ads similarly rely on 18-49 numbers, but I have never seen those numbers reported.

I think the next episode is when WYWS ratings will hike up. The promotions kicked off literally just weeks before airing (unlike other high budget dramas where it was promoted for months). I don't expect it to pull an MDBC (the ratings doubled on the second week), but I think it'll slowly take over Hospital Ship.

@headsno2: you are a riot! Your Hospital Ship and Manhole comments, too good! I've come to the conclusion that the former is a combination of to each their own and a guilty pleasure drama. Lord knows I've watched and continue to watch some downright awful shows. Sometimes all it takes is that one thing that you identify with to keep you going.

Okay I decided to binge watch hospital ship 1-16 the other day, and I'm in love with it. So yeah, some of us are watching and loving it! This is the first medical drama actually worth watching. Ha Ji won and kang min hyuk actually have a really sweet and nuanced romance, and the medical cases of the week help the characters of our doctor cast grow and further the overarching story. The directing is really beautiful and unique and captures small interactions really well, and the dichotomy between the coldness of ha ji won and the warmth of kang min hyuk and their unique struggles as people and as doctors is portrayed really well on screen. Honestly those of you who dislike it : why? Im just curious because I find it so well thought out and really awesome and its separated from those pesky hospital politics . For those haven't seen it I recommend it!

Mostly life is busy at the moment and it's nice to have something undemanding and comfortable to watch. I'm also a sucker for noona romance. I don't think min hyuk and ha ji won have amazing passionate chemistry but theres a certain understanding, respect and comfort between their characters that I like - they feel like partners and I can see that lasting. So yes, 'comfortable' may be my verdict for this drama. Just needs to keep the surgery and the annoying ex girlfriend scenes to a minimum and I'm happy...

Well, to be honest this drama was in my watch list cz I like medical drama but not very keen on the time travel part of the plot. But once I started, Kim Nam Gil just got himself another fan! hehehahaha~ I find the chemistry between KNG and KAJ was pretty good and Im more of a hugger than kisser so the scripts were really my type. The whole acupuncture and modern medical technologies really make me feel how really good and awesome our ancestors were with their medical skills and limited resources.
I really really enjoyed the drama a lot. I have both mancrush and girlcrush on both the leads. Bro said it was draggy in the middle but I couldn't stop once I started. I finished the whole 16episodes in 3 nights (cz gotta work, if not it would have been just 2 full days)..
I give 2 thumbs up to this. =D
