Hi Beanies !
Already 4th in Germany I finally have Internet yeah ! Classes start Monday so I will use all the time I have with my beloved dramas.
I binge-watched Rescue Me, Age of Youth 2, Manhole, Reunited Worlds, The King Loves, Falsify and caught up to the last episode of While You Were Sleeping and to Temperature of Love episode 7. That's a lot !
Kim Jae Wook actually has chemistry with both leads. I'm just shipping him with them.
Woo Tak (or First Love Oppa like I like to him in Goblin) is my favorite on WYWS. I want to see more of the Three Flying Dragons !
Happy Friday :D

Hi Beanies!! This is the first time I'm on an open thread, wow.
I've been in such a terrible drama rut recently. I tried Temperature of Love, and Live Up to Your Name, and I really like them both, but I couldn't bring myself to continue them somehow. The only show I'm currently hanging onto is While You Were Sleeping. T_T I want more cute Woo Tak, more nutty Hong Joo and more cool but clumsy Jae Chan. MORE FLYING DRAGONS!

I am thinking of drawing a scene from the show but I can't decide! I've shortlisted the bus scene and also the scene where JC discovers he's wearing the apron. I considered the kiss.. but it didn't happen IRL. >:

The kiss scene was beautiful tho. It would be great to draw it even if it didn't happen irl. It will feel like a scene out of W, since you're going to draw a scene.

Awww Suzy's cute! I can't speak much for her previous performance since I've only watched her in Dream High, but she's adorable in WYWS.
I'm sticking to recaps too, but I'm not sure if it's because of the show's problem, or it's just me... the drama slump is driving me nuts.

she is cute, i agree, but i tried to watch Uncontrollably Fond but couldn't finish it, haha. Maybe if the gap before 20 century love is too long I'll start it. I tried reading the recap but got a little confused along the way, I think the flashbacks don't lend itself well to reading!

She really is cute—at least I agree with you. I told myself I was going to drop that show but I think I might give it a second chance. I figure that might bite me in the butt later on if I end up liking it because of all the new stuff starting next week etc.

same...although I am watching it, I tend to skip out a lot of the scenes.
I did not start wyws cause of suzy either. Sadly uncontrollably fond was enough reason for me to never try her dramas again. But she is not the only reason. I think after manhole n others I never want to try different reality type of dramas. They just never work out and if neither the acting or plot is solid, I just don't see the point in investing time?

You should give wyws a try. In uncontrollably fond i couldnt like suzy's character and the plot had a great potential but turned a bit crazy. But in wyws suzy's character is so well written that any deficencies from her (acting wise) can be easily ignored and the story is amazing so far. And dont compare manhole to any other drama that drama was a disaster

ah but I am guessing we are still at the cute part that she is actually good and pleasing to watch.(tbh if she picks only lighthearted dramas id be a fan) I just don't think it will be the same when the dramatic angst cues in if it does. Need to wait a bit to be proven right or wrong lol.
Sam
October 7, 2017 at 7:10 AM
actually the first epi is pretty angsty that is part of the reason why i liked her character here she is not perfect but still better than before and was able to make me cry. Most of the cute part comes later. But if you want to wait till its finished than its your choice:)

October 6, 2017 at 10:55 PM
The acting and plotlines in WYWS has been pretty solid so far (even with the "supernatural" elements factored in).
Characters are really likeable as well, if a little outlandish in their own charming ways.
You should really give it a try.

So Javabeans is in a slump and I'm too and I guess a lot of beanies are in one too. Honestly, I think this year hasn't been good with drama offerings. I have only completed three shows- Circle, CT and SDQ and I am in a slump since SDQ ended. Still have my hopes high for Argon, if its subs get released ever (btw did none of the Korean recappers watched it too? Didn't see anyone commenting about it on What we're watching) an d for the upcoming ones on Revolutionary Love. I need a crack drama please! I want to get out of the slump!

Have you watched Woman of Dignity yet? I've watched a lot of kdramas, and I feel like this is one of the best kdramas I've ever seen. This show's ratings were through the roof (I think the last episode ended at 12%, which is incredible for a cable drama), and I can see why. This fast paced drama is intense from beginning to end, and gives the viewer so many deeper things to think about on the meaning of life and happiness.
Both women leads are amazing in this, beautiful and charismatic. Kim Sun Ah in particular gives an amazing performance, she's an incredible actress.

After weeks of not watching drama (what a dark time it was) I finally marathon Live Up To Your Name and I am glad to report that it did live up to the hype. Currently on episode 12 and oh my, that kiss!
I don't know is it because of the drama-drought or good-kiss-drought but dare I say, this might just be the best kiss of the year. Great chemistry, wonderful lines, no cheesy camera effect, just two consented adults who really like each other and enjoy smooching like what other normal adults in the world do.

I'm in a drama slump after Strongest Deliveryman :-( Only watching Age of Youth now, and rewatching Goong from where I left off last year for the lovely soundtrack. ANy good sageuk to reccommend? I've already watched SFD, Dae Jang Geum, Dong yi. TWDR was a bit too dry for me though, I like something with more romance/like those about the women in the palace!
Waiting for the Kim Ji Suk drama to start!! :-)

Empress Ki definitely :-) I was a bit daunted by the 50 episodes, but it was so addictive I never even noticed. SFD was great, but I found the political plot a bit exhausting for marathoning; Empress Ki is a popcorn fest. Just skip the last two episodes, and you're set :-p .

In addition to REBEL and THE KING'S DAUGHTER for the exact same reasons as Sera, you could also take in CHUNO / SLAVE HUNTERS. Kim Ji-suk is in that one, too, as the youngest of the slave hunters. Jang Hyuk is his epic self, and the OST is fantastic.
SEVEN DAY QUEEN also deals with Yeonsangun (the same historical figure KJS plays in REBEL) and his half-brother and successor. It is one of the best sageuks I've seen. Intense.
SAIMDANG, LIGHT'S DIARY, has a Joseon timeline that is very well done with gorgeous cinematography. The modern timeline is messy, and not integrated well with the earlier one. Too bad it didn't work. It was a total blast, however, to see Yang Se-jong (surgeon Do In-bum from ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM) in a dual role in both timelines. He was terrific. [And then he knocked it out of the ballpark in DUEL playing 2 clones, their donor, and one clone impersonating the other -- in essence, four roles. Stunningly nuanced.]
Another short sageuk with Seo Hyun-jin and Kang Ha-neul:

Ashi Girl's - manga's live-adapatation - 1st episode is subbed.
Five - 5 episodes subbed.
Am i a bad judge of character or I'm more prone to disagreeing with many fans? After, watching/reading content +even experiencing most of it I'm still confused what might be the right way.
Propose - Acceptance or Rejection - Move On
Propose - Acceptance or Rejection - Keep trying.
Which one is the right option? If you move on so easily and ready to charm other person, were your feelings even true or sincere? Main Leads never pick this option ever. Though Jung Sun wasn't clinggy but he didn't raised white flag either
2nd option is -vely associated with 2nd main leads(mainly females) but more +vely executed by 1st main leads. All those cringy dialogues of(I will make you fall in love with me, win/steal him/her/you/their heart.
In dramaworld it is pretty easy to go around both options but this doesn't work well in real life.
To define a character properly a good definition of every attribute is required.

I think i get where youre coming from. Truly its not a very simple one-size-fits-all decision. There are times when it would probably be better for a character to keep chasing - but they dont. And at other times you want the character to stop and preserve their dignity but they dont.
But its really peoples attributes and experiences in life that shape up how the character will act. I actually kind of like the way Jung-swoon stopped all romantic advances when he was told to stop.
She(cant remember her name rn) needed her space to develop her career and he gave that to her.
He probably didnt drop a message because he didnt want to seem clingy and didnt want to overestimate his position in her life. He also probably didnt want to get hurt

WYWS is losing my interest...The first episode was amazing, but now it feels like I'm watching Pinocchio version 2. Two intrepid leads out to save the world, simplified characters, simplified social issues with cookie cutter "teachable moments/life lessons," quirky and cozy family life scenes, etc.
Even the teachable moments don't make sense sometimes. Like when the woman prosecutor tells LJS that they shouldn't indict the abuser because they should give the victim time to decide whether she wants to stay or leave. This is horrible, horrible advice. First off, domestic abuse victims are often psychologically damaged or paralyzed from fear and cannot make the decision to leave. Secondly, it is dangerous for abuse victims to stay in the relationship because they could be killed. Finances is NOT a reason to stay in an abusive relationship...you must leave immediately, because your life is more important than anything else, including finances.

Many women are killed while trying to leave abusive relationships as well. Encouraging them to leave without having concrete resources or a guarantee if safety to do so is a huge problem too as well. And it's easy to say finances is not a reason to leave, but living costs money.
Required fields are marked *

October 6, 2017 at 8:22 AM
No. My sister works for a women's shelter, and the advice is always seek help and leave ASAP when you recognize abuse. Keeping yourself in a dangerous situation because you're afraid of danger when you leave is a bad solution.
Living costs money, but working a minimum wage job is still better than putting your life at risk.
Required fields are marked *
ladyjaye
October 6, 2017 at 9:17 AM
and that blithely-given advice is problematic as hell. Statistics show that over half of women who are killed are killed whole trying to leave/ after they've left the relationship. Just saying "leave" is not a solution.
And many remain on abusice relationships because minimum wage is very often NOT a loveable wage. That financial insufficiency is one of the causes women find themselves in abusive situations. So saying "minimum wage" is better than dangerous situations is simply untrue. It is a factor for people (women, usually) being in at risk situations, and many times itself an at-risk situation.

None of which negates the fact that the female prosecutor's advice was bad.

October 6, 2017 at 7:39 AM
I think the female prosecutor's advice was meant to show how screwed up their POVs are... and that Jae-chan once resented dad's choice, but now he made the big and difficult decision to fight for the abused mom instead of brushing it off as per the female prosecutor's advice (which was ridiculous).

Has anyone here read "Big, Little, Lies?" Or seen the HBO mini-series? I read the book when I used to be in a book club (before kdramas), and one of the characters is in an abusive relationship--a terrible one--and something the book said struck me. That being abused is almost "worth it" for the love and affection and gifts that she gets afterwards from the abuser--totally f'd up. But that's part of what makes them stay as well. It's a complex thing for sure and easy for people outside the relationship to judge and state the obvious, which is just to leave. In reality, it's much more difficult and women and men die every day trying to leave.

I've sens the HBO mini series and thought it was a good portrayal of an abusive relationship. Like Perry (the abuser) a lot of abusive men can be verry charming when it suits them to make the woman stay.

Happy Friday Beanies 😊
and random hi to Sunbae 👋 and Sabu 👋 ….🙃ㅋㅋㅋ
Highlights of this week :
◾ Update after one of my post in the previous What we’re watching : I’ve checked some recaps/articles and it seems like that the new features quick appearance on September 19th followed by the site down had another consequence : all emojis (except ❤ heart emoji , lol) have been replaced by “?” 😲 in recaps/articles prior to Sept. 19th 😱 except the fan wall (Oppa war is safe 😉). My posts in School 2017 recaps look sad now T_T .
◾ I was hoping for Roy Kim to sing an OST for Temperature of Love (ToL) but he made one for While you were sleeping which I’m not watching 💔…still it’s Roy Kim 🤗...still hoping he’ll sing one for ToL 🤗
◾ @Javabeans seem to be in a serious drama slump 😟. I’ve watched only ToL this week, I’ve put Rebel Thief on hold again it’s good but I’m not in the right mood to appreciate it, so I’m in a drama slump compared to my usual schedules. That means making gif of Tol & 1n2d, watching more variety shows 🙃…but strike is still going on at KBS & MBC so no Infinite Challenge neither I live alone, regarding 1n2d : this week ep edited by higher officials w/o Yoo Il Young PD and the staff isn’t the true 1n2d T_T . Next week I’ll add Revolutionary love in my schedule , I hope I’ll have as much fun as I had with She was pretty hoping to see a crazy/funny Siwon again 😊 and dimples dimples dimples ㅋㅋㅋ.
◾ New milestone : 12,000 upvotes reached 😎😁 (I’ve already chosen my special guest, I just need to prepare the little party to throw it this weekend 😊)

Hi everyone!! Hows your friday going ? Speaking of slumps - I think I may be in one as well. I barely watch dramas right now and am only encouraged to watch when with a chingu of mine. At first I thought it was because of my phone ( no laptop for a while now so my phone is my "window" to the world) but I remember the days of watching Shopping King Louie and other dramas that aired late last year/earlier this year and using my phone was no problem then, especially as I would always be on a haste to catch up with the most recent episodes and discuss them here.
Oh well....
On another note though, I've picked up learning Korean again. I use app called Hello Talk. On there you can chat with foreigners as a way of strengthening your language skills - this app is a language exchange app and includes all languages, not just english and korean
If anyone's interested, give it a go! (I feel like i just did an advertisement lol) It's actually pretty fun and has quite a few features - a couple of daily instant translations (ngl i prefer google translate tho), a timeline on which people can post, and most importantly - fun people! (beware - ive heard of perverts but never encountered any, its still a social media platform and so if youre interested in checking it out, please be careful with your pictures (you dont hv to post any - i dont and i still hv fun on there ^^)) App is available to both Apple and android users on their respective app stores.
I was wondering if anyone else has ever wondered if they're doing the right thing/being fair in a particular decision they are making and so therefore start low-key wishing their life was a drama being recapped on here so that the decision could be analyzed and they could get support from beanies in the comments section. Anyone else? Only me ? Crickets? Okay moving on:
Right now i just bring myself to read recaps - thats how Ive been following drama.
But has anyone else caught a few japanese live-actions? Kyou no kira kun? Peach girl (if u hv tell me where)
Aahhh i was also wondering if anyone else was wondering who would portray Louie in the Suits remake. I wonder if they'll make him into an antagonist? Yknow, maybe he'll be jealous and petty one who outs mike? In this version (considering itll have a shorter run than the original- they could do anything with the characters)
Well, i am looking forward to mad dogs - because Kang Unnie and uri Dong-Chul haha. We'll see.
Have a nice day people!

Ahhahaha. I get what you mean, but you could say ive recently been becoming more self aware - and so there were moments when i just didnt want to look into myself by myself and just wished to have a character analysis done on me by beanies. Im not sure if im making any sense to you (?)
Maybe it was just a part of my childish-spotlight-seeking side? ㅋㅋㅋ

Ah, I get what you mean now. You're right, there's a certain ruthlessness... or is it honesty? in how we talk about drama characters' actions. It makes for great analysis and uncomplicated advice but we probably wouldn't be that blunt when talking about a friend's problem, even online ones.

Time has finally come that AoY2 will end tomorrow. So as my time here in DB. 😭😭😭 Once the recaps for the final episode of AoY2 is out, I'll be officially taking a leave for a month or two. 😥 I've got a major exam to take this coming November and I've been slacking for the past few months. So I've got to up my game and study for the remaining weeks. 💪🏼

Hi Beanies!
Thought I'd share that I submitted a screenplay for a competition last weekend. I was going to make it a 16 one-hour episode series set in London, before I came to my senses and made it 30-min episodes instead, as it was for UK tv and that's the format that their comedies normally take.
I did keep the 'fake' cold open (as inspired by Marriage Not Dating) and have a character say 'Fighting!'
Not sure it's what they're looking for, but I had a lot of fun trying to create a kdrama-style UK TV series.
Happy Friday!

hello fellow beanies!!! this week’s been rather hectic, but Age of Youth 2 is ending this week i don’t really know how to feel about it?? I’m glad we will finally have closure and i’ll be able to stop refreshing a gazillion times waiting for the subs, but then again i’m terribly sad that we have to part with our favourite housemates (for at least another year or so) (hopefully we’ll see them again next year!!) I’ve become really attached to all our dear housemates over the episodes and i feel like we’ve gotten to know them really well we somehow feel like one of them? also i’ve got 17days to exams which makes the impending drama slump after aoy actually good??? so i can focus and do my work properly :) really looking forward to more of javabeans’ fun articles on drama slumps :)

Hi hi!
Girls Generation 1979 (8 episodes long): I loved this retro coming-of-age kdrama with its universal themes of loss of innocence, making decisions, authority and rebellion, exposure to new ideas, sexual awareness, self-awareness, love. (“Is embarrassment worse than betrayal?”) It felt like a delicious, short novel that you can’t put down and is over too soon.
Temperature of Love – of course I love Jung Sun and Hyun Soo together, but I admit that Jung Woo (Kim Jae Wook) gives me second-lead syndrome every time. He needs a leading role soon! Writer/chef combo is passionate!
Hospital Ship: I don’t mind the acting but the story isn’t all that interesting.
Watching all sorts of k-variety (with some of my regulars are on hold): I Came Alone, Law of Jungle Figi; Abnormal Summit; Battle Trip; My Daughters Men (Isn’t dads watching their adult daughters date is too hard on them? Cotton candy lattes! ); Fantastic Duo; Weekly Idol (if you want to learn quirky things about idols, this is the show for you); Night Goblin.
Finished rewatching Reply 1997 (speaking of retro coming-of-age kdramas, Seo In Guk and APink’s Eun Ji are the best! Did anyone watch her in Trot Lovers? Also a cute and fun kdrama. I hope she continues acting.) Next: Chilabongie!
October Things: I snipped bunches of lovely lavender from the yard and tied small dried bouquets and wreaths with raffia for Christmas gifts. I also boiled lavender, strained it, and added witch hazel to the fragrant liquid to make facial mist. It is very nice. To make bath soak: layer lavender bath salt, Himalayan pink bath salt, and dried lavender buds in pint jars. The smell is heavenly and they are so pretty, too!
Have a great weekend!

Girls Generation 1979 was amazing. It really was short and oh so sweet.
Temperature of Love...I saw I'm entranced when I watch it.
Oh Weekly Idol is going to have GOT7 on next week! They had Highlight on this week. Their teamwork is pretty impressive.
I think I want to rewatch Reply 1997 with a friend...I don't know it seems like it would be a good sleepover drama. Eun Ji is so lovable. Trot Lovers is on my to watch list.
Is it weird how calming the last bit of your post was? I love lavender and it really chills me out. I had no idea it could do that by just reading about it though. haha

Wanna One isn't my thing from Broduce 101, but they were highly entertaining on Weekly Idol two weeks in a row. And B1A4 last week were adorable. Jinyoung was on Take Care of My Refrigerator a couple of weeks ago and is such a heart melt. Looking forward to GOT7 again - it's probably been a while since they were on WI!

Hello Beanies!
This week is a pretty busy week for me! I got off work late and came home late, so I only had a chance to watch 1 ep at night after work. I still haven't watched this week's episodes of ToL! 😩 And I haven't watched WYWS ep 7-8 and LUTYN ep 11-16.😫😫😫 But the good thing is that all the short weekend dramas' slots are empty this week, so I can spend my weekend watching those episodes that I haven't watched yet. Nevertheless, I got a chance to finish Girl's Generation 1979 and I gotta say, it's worth my 8 hours of watching that drama! If you haven't watched GG1979, you can give it a try! 😁
Anyway, I'm excited and terrified at the same time for all the 9 dramas that will be premiered next week. I'm super excited for Mad Dogs, Go Back Couple, The Package and Revolutionary Love.I'm also interested to give Because This is My First Life and Black a try. Gosh, I'm terrified if I can't have enough time to watch all the new dramas including the one that I'm watching right now ToL and WYWS.

I will start my trip in Barcelona and then to Budapest before making my final stop in London. It happened that due to some lousy planning on my side, I forgot to consider Vienna. So since I have extra one day in Budapest, I thought of making a day trip to Vienna. I read more wonderful things about Vienna than Budapest (but this trip is my birthday gift to my mom and she wanted Budapest), so I have no idea what to actually do within just half a day in that city. I even wonder if it's worthy to make that day trip to Vienna? Any suggestion?

Oh I'm sorry no suggestions there. I havent been to any of those places. But if you really wanna see Vienna I'd normally say go for it but only half a day to see a place which is as interesting as there - it might be a bit stressful and slightly unfulfilling...
Those are just my thoughts of course, who knows it could turn out to be Makjang fun!

Go to Grinzing and drink "Federweiße" in a Heuriger (vineyard's tavern serving new wine) while listening to Schrammelmusik. This is the time of year to do it. You can only get new wine locally as it's fermenting too vigorously to be shipped.
I visited an organic vineyard in the Mosel Valley in September/October years ago. Drinking the frothy new wine and munching on Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart, very much like a low, dense Quiche Lorraine) are among my most cherished memories. Be sure to check out the new wine in Budapest, too! ;-)
If drinking is not your thing, then go see the Lipizzaners at the Spanish Riding School!

Don't skip Budapest just to go to Vienna for half a day. Budapest is so nice. Try to get in to a spa. Out of this world experience. Try the one in the area behind the Budapest sign (end of the road of the street where the Opera; their Champs Elysie). If you have to get to Vienna, just stay around the St. Stephen's Cathedral area. Though last April when i was there, it was shrouded outside. Schonbrunn Palace will require another half day. Don't bother with hop-on hop off. Place is too spread out.
