Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 30-Nov. 5, 2017

There’s not much change in the world of ratings this week, with the current slate of shows largely holding steady in their places with mostly just small ticks upward or downward. The ratings race hasn’t been very exciting lately, and even shows that claim first prize are doing it with slim margins and single digits.

That is, everything aside from KBS weekend hit My Golden Life, which continues to stay on the happier side of 30%, which is great for the show (but a head-scratcher for me—I find the show watchable, but not 30% watchable, if you know what I mean).

It’s interesting to note that nothing in the Monday-through-Friday slots has broken into double-digit ratings, so we’re kind of comparing heights of acorns in some cases. That said, while the numbers may be underwhelming, I’m glad that they aren’t indicative of the quality of the shows themselves; I think we have a good crop of shows at the moment, which is what really matters!

Because this is Our First Life deserves all the love and so much more. It's the best show to grace drama land in a long time. Go Back Spouses continues to draw me in. I particularly liked today's episode and can't wait for next week. Regardless of ratings, it's a really wonderful watching season.

The ratings are so bad. If MLSHR had aired this year with last year's ratings it would have been the best of SBS since May 😮😮(and it was considered a flop last year)

No surprises whatsoever from them, but I'm only watching cable dramas so I don't care about their ratings 😊😊😊

Yea if ML airs now, it will be considered a semi-hit like While You Were Sleeping instead of a flop.

Or it might do even worse then what it did. I just don't know why Jun Ki is saddled with bad luck. Nothing he is trying to do for the past couple of years seem to work in terms of number or quality.

Exactly, what would make it do better in ratings now with every show struggling to make it to 10%?
Half assing K-history for a Chinese remake was probably one of the main reason why it didn't sit well with the older Korean viewers.

Seven Day Queen could have been the sageuk of the moment as well if it had aired now.

Timing is everything. MLSHR got kicked to the curb because of the love of PBG and Moonlight but also Moon Lovers was hindered by being based on a C-drama and airing when all the THAAD crap was hitting the fan. I think it would have done better now but not necessarily a huge hit.

Idk if PBG love make SCR has a low rating, I remember MDBC had an okay and a little bit low buzz starts, like okay-ish rating and almost the same as SCR premiere. The drama is quiet until people noticed how it executed beautifully and MDBC doubled their rating on 6 or 8 ep so even if MDBC make people tune in more, that doesn't always mean bringing SCR down cause there was improvement of ep 8-10 rating of SCR.

If there is anything that bringing SCR rating down, it's the internal factor; storyline, acting, directing and sounds.

I didn't realize that Koreans love PBG more than LJK.

For me, I didn't plan to watch MDBC, the story wasn't appealing to me. I was more curious about MLSHR. I just tuned in to Moonlight because it started a week earlier and it turned out much better than I expected. The exact opposite happened to MLSHR. I always dial down expectation on a remake but it had the crappiest premiere and I think that's what sunk it. Terrible acting, editing, directing all round. It got better but people had already gave up.

idk if rating can be count just based on number cause if it aired now, it may get lower than what it gets years ago since ratings are declining every year,

This comment is logically flawed. What makes you think that MLSHR would've gotten the same ratings? The buzziest shows - I mean in Korea, not DB - right now: Go Back Couple (which is also getting the best media reviews), When You Were Sleeping and Temperature of Love are getting middling ratings. ML will still be considered a flop. I'm saying this even though I like Lee Joon-gi.

Go Back Couple is my fav out of the current crop, poignantly meaningful and nuancedly delivered. While it carries on like a comedy but one just can't help to be touched and I literally tear up when watching each episode especially in the final epilogue segment as the 'present' was revisited.

Jang Nara is really great in conveying her character's emotion while Son Jo-ho is also bringing his A game. Episode 8 is the watershed to swing us back to the main couple. Can't wait for the second installment to come.

The real winner in here is tvN. Both Because This is My First Life and Buamdong Revenge Club are really doing great in terms of ratings. More than 3% rating in a cable show is already a success for cable networks. I bet BTIMFL will break the 4% rating next week because the ending for ep 8 is really interesting and the preview looks good. :)

Avengers Social Club really deserves those ratings and I hope it goes beyond the 6% mark. My absolute favourite among all the currently airing dramas! Who knew I'd be so in love with the revenge shenanigans of 3 ajummas and one boy?

On another note, I'm really happy for Shin Hye Sun. I'm not able to watch myself but I hope the success of My Golden Life leads to bigger things for her!

Ahjumma avengers are ruling this season. None of the new show was able to make steady path ahead but here people are vouching for 30+ ladies. I don't think Life can ever catch upto it.
My Golden Life - is a Cinderella story with a lot of soup spilled around everywhere. Right now writer is upping the reputation and character of Hye Sun. The pure Heoine facing all the hardships of life, smiling, muttering "fighting" and everyone else going over-the-top in greediness to light her path to glory.

My Golden Life is far too dramatic for me (in addition to other factors) but my goodness, the two main moms really take the cake. I like the way you frame Shin Hye Sun's character arc as well, 'light her path to glory'. Viewers can't seem to resist a pure heroine!

I just watched the first episode of Avengers Social Club out of sheer desperation (I've been so underwhelmed by every single drama since I can't even remember) and it jumped straight up to the top of my favourite dramas of 2017. Am actually quite sad for the ratings of the package & the fact that both the package & buamdong didn't get to be recapped here on db, they're missing out the good ones :'(.
I watched 8 currently aired ones & both the package & buamdong to me are def the most refreshing to watch among the others.
I feel the package is so underrated & underappreciated just because they take traveling as their theme.
You guys shd give them a chance, it was unexpected for me too but turns out it's so good & had all the things I ever wanted in a kdrama:
✔ hilarious show
✔ breathtaking scenery & wonderful ost
✔ slowburning, steamy kisses & romance
✔ heartwarming/touching/
romantic stories
✔ character with depth/backstory
✔ dealing with realistic matters & mature monologue/inner thought
✔ sibling goals

I actually tuned into The Package because of the travelling theme, so I don't think that's the reason why it's being overlooked. However, the main buzzkill for me is actually the leads. I just don't find LYH convincing in many of her roles, this one included. She just doesn't have the charm or magnetism to pull me into her characters and it's actually (on paper) a character I am generally drawn to. JYH is kind of the same deal, serviceable but not really adding anything to the drama that makes it compelling enough to watch considering everything else as well. All in all, I found the two leads bland and Yoon Park was an interesting addition but not enough to actually get me to tune in. I think The Package was a missed opportunity to become a niche success like Age of Youth with the travel theme.

Up until 8th episodes of the package, I found this drama is refreshing. But ya again, I still can't buy romance of lead roles. LYH and JYH still can't blend naturally, so unfortunate. Why dont cast the girl as his gf as the lead, instead expressionless LYH, which I found chemistry of Maroo and his ex is better and more convincing as a lover.
Conflicts of another roles are also interesting, a group of people with their problems behind.

It actually depends whether we talk about ratings points or share: if I am not mistaken ratings points are usually the percentages of television-equipped households (regardless of whether the television is actually in use during the program), whereas share is the percentage of all television-equipped households with a television in use during the program. This applies to the Nielsen ratings. But I am not sure, it may be different in Korea.

Epi 7 of Witch's Court is considered quite high considering it was aired one hour later (11pm), but still decreased from 2 digits they got previous week for both episodes.

Hope Buamdong to hit 6% soon, and Go Back Couple to hit 7% next week.

Expecting My Golden Life to get more than 35% tonight (their Sunday slot is usually much higher than Saturday, but with the truth is out, I think more viewers will be more interested). Not my favourite, but the writer of this drama knows how to write an addicting makjang drama and more luck on her
side because of the timeslot as well. It's interesting to see this writer can write pretty good weekend drama like My Golden Life and My Daughter Seo-young, and she can also write good romcom -Twenty Again, romance fantasy -49 days and thriller - Two Weeks which all are among my favourites. I also enjoyed Prosecutor Princess and Brilliant Legacy but didn't love it. Hope to see romcom like Twenty Again in her next work.

I guess for any cable drama rating to within shouting distance of a broadcast drama is already considered pretty good. Added to that, the absolute ratings numbers are not too shabby for BRC and BTIOFL.

Shows like TOL and WYWS have a built in appeal for a broader age range given the easy watch and presence of idols. Both 20CB&G, BRC and BTIOFL may have a stronger appeal over a narrow target audience. Lack of idols and not really being an "easy" watch if you're used to makjang and loudly painted characters.

This is why folks complaining about less talented idols being cast over seasoned actors probably miss the point about commercial success. It is a formula that works for the SK market regardless of the impact to the "quality" of the product.

My other theory (since I am ignorant on the timing of the shows) is that the strike has affected some of the popular variety shows that may have been "lead ins" or "lead outs" to the dramas. So folks are just tuning in less.

The only reason I would guess HS did as well as it did is momentum. There cannot be any other reason (please!) to watch that mess. I couldn't even stand reading the recaps.

TOL has no idols though? Seo Hyun Jin, Yang Se Jong, Kim Jae Wook, Jo Boa....none of them are idols. Even the Witch's Court cast (highest rated on weekdays) has zero idols.

All the most successful public channel dramas of 2017 - Defendant, Chief Kim, Whisper, Rebel, Fight My Way, even up to this cycle - have not had idols in the leads.

And I thought it's a myth that idol dramas are commercially successful. WYWS is the lowest rated full drama Park Hye Ryun has ever written, and plenty of other idol dramas get low single digits, Manhole with two well known idols got the all time lowest ratings ever recorded. Kdrama PD's might be thinking it's ok to get so much guaranteed rating with idol cast but they are poisoning the quality of their own drama leading viewers to turn away. They could improve their commercial success if they started paying slightly more attention to talent when casting and don't cast someone only for getting PPL.

TOL has no idols? Its lead actress Seo Hyun Jin started her career as an SM idol then promoted as a solo artist before transitioning into acting. Also one of the bigger hits of the year SWDBS had an idol as male lead. Anyways presence of an idol doesn't guarantee commercial success, but neither do actors as harsh as it may sound. For eg. last year IU was blamed heavily for failure of LJKs drama, but this year he worked with a reputed actress and result wasn't too different. More than anything writing and the connection with the audience makes or breaks the shows in most cases. With dramas mostly performing below par in ratings, I can see why idols are being cast. They may not guarantee commercial success (not like actors guarantee it either), but they guarantee at least some profit by the way of PPL, and selling rights overseas.

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

.....so Seo Hyun Jin is an 'idol actress' even though she quit idolling before even starting to act, has not done any idol or music activities in 10+ years and got famous as an actress 10 years after quitting being an idol?

That's some real stretching to claim her success as 'look at the success of an idol drama', but the fact is that more and more, idols are looking like ratings poison especially when they can't act. Even if they bring in a few million won they bring in ppl is a lot less than the loss of money from low ratings due to low quality of the drama from hiring them.

Advertisers pay for PPL hoping the drama will be seen by lots of people but if some idol's CF company pays money for PPL and the drama gets not even double digits or gets 1 percent then obviously it shows idols are a waste of money to include in dramas. Meanwhile the biggest hits of 2016-17 have no idols as leads, only actors .

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

When did I say that Seo Hyun Jin is still working as an idol? I clearly stated that she started her career as an idol, and the fact that she is a full time actress now doesn't change that. And none of the biggest hits of 2016-17 had an idol as lead? Let's see. Strong Woman had Park Hyung Sik (ZE:A) as male lead, Chief Kim had 2PM Junho as parallel lead, last years Another Oh hae young had Eric from Shinhwa as male lead ( or even he can't be counted as idol anymore?), Defendant had SNSD Yuri as female lead ( I know she had little bearing on the success this drama achieved and her role was small, but I m sure she would have been dragged had the drama been a failure, so why not mention her?) , even Hospital Ship which is maintaining decent ratings as per current standards has an idol from CNblue as male lead. Also many actors also get single digit ratings, not just idols. So my point stands. When there is no guarantee of commercial success and ratings remain on the lower side for most of the dramas, it's not that hard to understand why casting directors would cast idols to generate some easy PPLs and overseas distribution profits.

2

Excuse you, Seo Hyun-jin is an actor and has been for years. I don't know why you would say she's an idol when she's not? That's unnecessary when you make a solid argument about the ratings. Dramas' popularity among TV watching Korea is declining badly and the difference b/w the ones with the highest and lowest is hardly noticeable. And objectively speaking, when the writing and directing, which are the core of a drama, fail no actor bad or good can really make a difference.

"... when the writing and directing, which are the core of a drama, fail no actor bad or good can really make a difference." Yes, I believe this is true about 80% of the time. People are way too harsh on actors and even idols when it is the writing. Once in a while we end up with a Strong Woman which I think had a nice premise that was ruined by poor writing and became a hit because of the popularity of the leads, but those instances are in the minority. Just my view anyway.

1

Excuse you, I merely said Seo Hyun Jin started her career as an idol, not that she is currently active as an idol. I don't understand what's so offensive about stating that. And its not just about ratings, its also about the perception that those who are/ has been an idol are going to be necessarily terrible acting wise, when that's not the case.

1

@revel
I feel bad for this petty back and forth. But "TOL has Idols" were your own words. TOL can't have an Idol starring when non of them are active as an Idol. HMPF

I'm happy too ! I loved it ! It was not perfect and the scenario could avoid some plots but all the stories were moving. The scenery was so beautiful ! I really like the couple Ha Ji Won and Kang Min Hyuk, they had a great chemistry and I didn't feel the age gap. In the BTS, they were really cute together. HJW is so different of her role in the drama :p

Why was HS drama hated? I like that it had a real actress for a female lead not some overrated idol whose boring stagnant acting stays the same in every drama & movie regardless of how different the characters she plays are though her delusional fans would argue otherwise. Anyway, I like HS too.

The only drama I can't stop watching is Black.. it's so weird yet I just have to tune in every week and see what happens to our anti-hero. hah It deserves the good ratings and I hope it reaches the 5% mark soon.

Me too. Real quality production. Too many plot lines that makes it confusing at first but these few episodes have made so many things clearer.

I hope the same, I like the mystery in black and they keep delivering a satisfied p.

Ep 7 surprisingly end with a heartwarming feeling, even just a little

Man the ratings are sad. Crazy that besides My Golden Life and Man Who Sets The Table, not a single drama broke into the double digits. The highest rating on Monday was only 7.9%! I've not watched most of what is currently airing but are the current run of dramas just not that great? Or are people moving more to streaming services?
