It really does have a lot open for a second season. If that happens I'd love to see it focus more on the trio's friendship, and the challenges their friendship may face now that they're married and some of them have their own family (keeping this vague to avoid spoilers to those who haven't watched). I liked how unconditionally they supported each other, but friendships do change when you go through different phases in life, and I don't believe I've seen a show tackle that before.

I loved this drama and i though that it was very mature in the way it portrayed the characters individually as well as in couples. It was realistic without losing its whimsical side! Brilliant writing and acting. The last episode was beautiful.

I've fallen into a deep hole of drama ennui. I can't with all these damn legal dramas. The only air drama that I'm really excited about and enjoying is Hwayugi and it's already having issues!

What can I watch? I just binged "Father is Strange" over the past two weeks and adored it!

You should try Just Between Lovers. Still airing, so you may want to wait a week till it crosses the halfway 8epi mark, but so far it is worth the wait and the amazing ache that comes with watching a show about people with survivor's guilt just trying to get through another day.

Hello Beanies! Happy Friday!

I’m back! *waves hi sheepishly*
Usual excuses- work, life, family, baking (this one I did a lot)

How has everyone been? Ironically it took a pretty bad flu to get me off my feet with time to vegetate on the bed/sofa and watch some dramas.

So I watched I am Not a Robot and Hwayugi!

Enjoyed IANAR but I love Hwayugi!

Which is why I’m so bummed by the preemption. It’s like the drama gods are conspiring to punish me further for my prolonged hiatus.

I do understand tho. Because working long hours is not at all foreign to doctors. And I thought I’d share some thoughts. Actually there is a recent movement towards shorter hours due to increased mistakes, burnout, increased stressed etc.

And it may seem strange but on the flip side, not everyone is supportive. Some of the reasons are good (need for more clinical/patient exposure, sense of responsibility and follow through etc) but there are also some senior people who unfortunately are against shorter hours because it’s almost like a misplaced badge of honor- “I survived, why can’t you??” People who complain of being tired and burnout are labeled “strawberries” or “snowflakes”.

And I hope the Korean drama producing industry isn’t resisting this change towards preproduction because of reasons similar to the latter reasons I mentioned. Because that would be a huge disservice to everyone involved, because the increased stress and danger in this case doesn’t even serve much purpose. There is never a need for a drama to be rushed out. It is never life and death. Until someone gets injured that is. Then it’s too late.

Hopefully the angst we all will be having from no Hwayugi for the next 1 week will translate into some positive change within the industry! If the medical industry can do it, I’m sure they can too!

Have a great week ahead everyone!

In the US, we've had caps on work hours for medical students and residents for several years now (80 hour work-week, no more than 24 hours on, which is still a lot). It actually started in the middle of my training. I think that when it starts the overwhelming majority sees the benefit of it. Here's to learning from the past and applying it to the future!

Required fields are marked *

Erm... I do have some gripes about the US system though... because it came to us here and messed up our training really bad. haha. But its a discussion for another time and another place. But the short version is: I do feel that less hours equals less experience which means less clinical acumen (cuz nothing beats seeing more patients) and unfortunately I do feel the US system is good at churning out specialised people but whether they are sufficiently trained is another question. Just my humble opinion though. I survived and I didnt have it as bad as some others of course, and I took the really long route to get where I am now, but I don't think those extra years were wasted, because I was a better doctor because of it. Until pregnancy plus maternity leave kinda screwed up my brain at least. hahaha. but yeah. I am all for the shortened hours but we have to realise that maybe then training has to be longer to make up for the less exposure. But many people nowadays are so into instant gratification that they don't see it that way.

Oops that wasn't short after all. haha. anyway Ally I had to just add that in! ;)

Hope you have a great 2018!!!

Ah, yes there are definitely some cons about the whole US system (not just training, but the cost burden, physician and nurse shortages and hiring nurses from other countries to meet the need, and also lots of physicians are not even trained here, and hiring foreign grads to also fill in the gaps. There are just not enough doctors. I won’t get on my soap box about this but also burnout is a real problem where I am. I’m People, and very talented ones at that, are just leaving medicine, or leaving the US and practicing other places. I would totally go to Korea and set up shop if I could!

Our family doctor just left her practice last year. She's just a couple years older than me and was burnt out by 50. The good thing is that she hasn't left healthcare; she's finding another way to help people.

I am watching Nirvana in Fire 2: The wind blows in Chang Lin.
I am on ep 12 and I love it so far.
The character starts quite slow but it picked up really fast by ep 4.
It's a new set of character and I feel that the story is the opposite of NiF. Chang-Lin manor is the one that under attack but they don't do anything bad.

The villain also realistic, they aren't a really baddie baddie per se but their goal and motive are understandable. Idk if this a spoiler but I appreciate how the show makes their villain has their own part and probably not agree with the other villain or has no idea that everything will be a disaster but it did happen and they face the consequences while still telling the truth. It shows many layers of humanity.

The other aspect I really like is the family value. If NiF deals with how to be accepted as a stranger, NiF 2 starts with a loving family, loving relationship and it just so endearing to see people really care about each other without having "the opposite face", it just genuine.
The story does have their shady character but this familiarity seems to imply that there will be none later, that the villain will break it and they need to bond again, that's gonna be heartbreaking to watch. TT.TT

I was quite sceptical in the 1st 3 ep because I don't feel Huang Xiaoming at all [sorry] and it feels slow but when pingjing start showing his ability and tingsheng show that he indeed learn from jingyan [huahahaha], love it,
Then the characters are so much more than what it seems, I hope they can continue the progression cause there are so many things to tell.

I also watch Tribes and empire: storm of prophecy
It is good, I find it slow and the music is weird, the child actor also not quite fit.
I believe it can be better because the story has richness, I think I just don't want to wait much.
I am on ep 20 and I feel like this drama is like Game of Thrones but they spend the entire 20 ep to introduces the main houses without making them have some action.
Everyone gets a fair amount of screentime but there is a lot of casts so just watch it with patience.

Hey! Another beanies who also watch Nirvana in Fire 2. I was also skeptical because the first one imho is the best political historical drama I've watched. I'm on episode 9 and turns out I also loove the second one so far. You're right about the loving family. The relationship is different from the first one and I already love all the interaction between this little family. Their dynamic is so adorable (Pingjing, his brother, his father and his sister in law + Miss Lin of course) and I don't want any bad things come to break them up. But when it happens I know it'll be sad but also so good. I can't wait to see Pingjing transform to be a mature character like in the trailers. Although I'm dreading what conflict or attack that'll befall his family to cause that change. I hope no one is killed in the Chang Lin family.

They are too adorable to miss, I love all the family scene and I agree that Pingjjing will grow up to see the reality of people and the changlin manor, I think he already learns from the shipwreck and consort shu case.

The rumour is that T&E was dropped by all major national stations because its pace is tragic. Coupled with your comment, I think the rumour has some basis.

I'm also enjoying NiF2 too!

Required fields are marked *

I heard about that too and I think the pace is kinda problematic. It's not new for a Chinese cinema imo because you have a lot of long series drama but in T&E, it still feels like a long opening and it feels distant even when it started with the childhood story.

Required fields are marked *

T&E's going to air in the station it was originally scheduled to broadcast on for (I've heard) 1/5 of the price it initially negotiated for. I think they wanted to earn more money by extending the length of the series (Chinese dramas are sold by price per episode) but ended up shooting themselves in the foot instead. They haven't recouped their losses, and they're also stuck with terrible reviews because of the slow pace.

1

I'm really enjoying Nirvana in Fire 2 so far! I really like that they're not trying to copy the original 100% and in fact you could watch it without any knowledge of the original.

OTOH, probably going to drop Tribes and Empires. They only adapted the first half of the book! I was wondering why the pacing was so slow. 75 eps for the first half of a regular sized novel! It's a pity because based on rumors there are some pretty awesome scenes in the 2nd half of the book but they won't make it into this adaptation. (The director is obviously hoping for a season 2 >.>) I think I'd rather read the original novel instead.

Nice that you also enjoyed NiF 2, they feel similar because of the directional choice but the story is totally different and you can feel that it's the same franchise with the different focus.

I don't know that about T&E, if that's the case, then it makes sense that it is so slow. I love the story and it feels that it gonna be grand but it just too slow. Still gonna watch it but it is slow.

Happy Friday, everyone! I just came to gush about NOTHING TO LOSE. I know, I know. It sounds weird even to me, because I think it is a terrible drama. The plot is atrocious, and it has more holes than a sieve. However, what it does excellently, and what I love to bits, is the characters. With a cast like this, how can I not love the characters??!! I love ALL the interactions and interplay - the mundanity of work (where they sit around and discuss cases and judgments), to the reluctant friendships, and (painful) family interactions. And the unrequited love. I find it all really well-done and interesting and could watch them do it for hours.

ALSO, this is my first time watching Yeon Woo-jin on screen, and I am totally captivated. I see why people think he's amazing. I LOVE how he plays this character: so calm and steady and self-assured (without being annoying). Gives me a 'still waters run deep' vibe and I LOVE IT!

And the relationship between Yeon Woo-jin and Park Eun-bin. I already wrote elsewhere how I really like it because instead of sparks flying, they just feel so comfortable and lived-in with each other, and I think it's fabulous.

I could gush some more about the acting - Dongha, Kim Hae-sook, the fathers, the coworkers...) but you catch my drift.

I really would enjoy these same characters with the same dynamic, and the same jobs, just in a completely different drama, because this plot is terrible and hardly makes sense!!!

Hi, @ladyjaye !
Thank you for gushing about NOTHING TO LOSE! It has become my guilty pleasure as well this season. I mean, I know most of the scenes don't make sense anymore, the storytelling is just... not that gripping and just like what you said. "The plot is atrocious, and it has more holes than a sieve." (LMAO), BUUUT we still cannot stop watching it because of the characters. They make the show seem appealing even though it really isn't XD I'm just glad they are making it work. Ugh. It's so good to watch them together. I especially love Dong Ha and Yeon Woo-jin together <3

It's also my first Yeon Woo-jin drama and I'm totally sold on his acting. Judge Sa's character is so admirable. I love how he carries himself inside and outside the courtroom and it doesn't hurt that he's so darn swoony, too *A*. He has this "untouchable" aura but he also makes you feel warm and fuzzy with his looks and adorable mannerisms *dreamy sigh*

Anyway, I'm hyped to see another beanie who got sucked in the drama as well XD Let's stick to it until the end~!

@ladyjaye, you've nailed it on the head here. Nothing to Lose is a mediocre show with great characters. I wish I could transplant the actors into a different series.

This show also gave my first case of Second Lead Syndrome. Dongha is heartbreakingly good here.

Better luck next time for everyone involved.

Honestly, I don't think the plot is so messy. The start was not a good one but after 4 episodes, I think the story became better ( I don't know a korean drama where all the story is consistent).

But it's true that the best in this drama is the casting. The 3 leads are great. I love their story. It's rare that I like a triangle love but in this one they all care for each other, it's cute. Even if I like the character of Dong Ha, I want to see the couple Park Eun Bin and Yeo Woo Jin, they're so cute together. I can't stop staring YWJ's face to see if he's smiling when he's with her, it's very subtile sometimes. It's cute how his character can't help himself to care about her :D

Hwayugi is the other drama I'm watching at the moment, and while I'm excited and interested, I do have to agree with people who point out that for a productions of this scale, the production values? Cinematography? Is below-par. The scene that drove it home for me was the final frame of episode 2, where Sunmi calls Oh Gong from the picture and he appears from the sky. I got the vibe it was meant to be epic (think Goblin smashing down his sword into that ship), but I couldn't see/feel it.

It's quite a shame, because the show would be enhanced if we can feel it's grand scale. But all the same, I'm enjoying it. I sincerely hope they can address all the behind-the-scenes issues satisfactorily and ensure a good work environment for everyone

Same feelings about the production for Hwayugi. I feel like the running was not as consistent as the plot because the show's premiere was too rushed. I was actually surprised that it would air rather quickly since it's a supernatural genre so a lot of special effects are needed. So I did expect that the filming would not go as smoothly as intended. I just hope that production companies in Korea would accept the incidents as the reason that they should consider pre-production, despite the financial risks, if they want to ensure quality and safety, especially for action-packed plots.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today. ....... Last OT of 2017!

I send a very big Thank You to all the Beanies! Thanks to all of you, drama-watching continues to be such a fun experience. I can always count on all of you to share your drama observations, your humor, your wisdom and your musings on daily life. Such a neat group of people the Beanies are! ..... Wishing every single one of you a very Happy New Year! I wish you good health, happiness and success in the upcoming year ..... and many more dramas to enjoy!

To the entire Dramabeans Team, a huge Thank You goes out to you too! You gave us a revamped site, goodies to shop for and a Fan Wall many of us can't stay away from! You showed us once again, why Dramabeans is simply the best. I thank you for your dedication and all the work you did this year to make this such a special place. May you also have a Happy New Year and an awesome 2018!

This week:

Jugglers - Simply loving Daniel Choi in this ..... and his endless selection of eyeglasses!

Black Knight - I just can't stay away from this, I really like it. It has this quirky, random humor that pops up in the most unexpected places, which makes it an interesting watch. ..... Also, I can't believe I'm saying this, but, Shin Se-kyung was pretty good in episode 7. I thought she was actually funny in a part or two!

Just Between Lovers - It's about trauma. It's about wounds that cut deep into your psyche. It's heavy stuff, but in this particular story, you just can't turn away.

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

@ korfan, I feel the same way about Just Between Lovers and I need to look again at Jugglers ... am watching it but did not realise they were making a spectacle of spectacles 😆... PPL you think? Should start counting the number of new specs Chi Won (Daniel Choi) has. 😋

the last post that I can possibly write for OT in this year.
I managed to squeeze 5 episodes of Nirvana in Fire 2 and it really reminds me of the 1st one.
You get introduced to an already established character and you'll learn them by their interaction with another character later.

It's a change pace and also really different than a usual saeguk with the child actor part. They want you to be ready as the character and see how well they performed in the task given.

@catocat I started Just between lovers, 2 ep in and it so charming, I haven't seen this female lead before, she is good. Thanks for mentioning it in the last OT.

Having said this, my to do list is watching more episodes of NiF2 and just between lovers

Happy Friday and Happy New Year to One and All!!!

What's on my mind - too much diverse stuff. But something occurred to me when I was supposed to be either home sick or working (while still sick). Something seems a bit or very strange in my (at the moment) favourite currenlty airing show, Just Between Lovers. Perhaps some of us can help explain...

I thought I saw that a list of the names of the survivors of the SMall collapse emerged in one of the last episodes, (wasn't Moon Soo herself looking at it?) but if that's so, unless they changed their names, how come no one knows that Lee Gang Doo and Ha Moon Soo are survivors too? Better yet, how come Moon Soo does not know Gang Doo was a victim like herself? She might have PTSD and forgotten the traumatic event itself, but she knows she was there and she saw that list of names.

I'm sure that in episode 5 (which I've just watched) it was Seo Joo Won who looked at that list and saw that it took 3 days for Ha Moon Soo to be found and 8 days for Lee Gang Doo, and that Gang Doo was the last survivor to be rescued.

I think this names are very common in SK. The architect starts to guess who Ha Moon Soo is and Yoo Jin backround checked Gang Doo so she knows while he destroyed the memorial. Ha Moon Soo doesn't look for Gang Doo, I think he didn't tell her his name and she probably thinks he died. She is little bit confused why he knows some things about her. There are 10 episodes to go, we will see how everything will unwrap...

Ha MOON Soo asked the same in earlier episode. Gang Doo denied it but i do think she knows he was there.

Maybe media trial of company and architect took all attention from who was saved. A guy who is the last survivor will get more attention than other survivors.

It was 2nd male lead who was looking at that list in ep 5.
Right now only 2nd male lead and by extension 2nd female lead knows who Gang Do is.

The architect did figure this out already. But besides that, Korean names are rarely unique, so just because you see a "Lee Gang Doo" or a "Ha Moon Soo" on a list, it doesn't mean that it's the "Lee Gang Doo" or "Ha Moon Soo" that you know. Lee is one of the three most common surnames (which apparently are the surnames of half of the Korean population) and there's only some 300 surnames at all in use (for 50 million people).

<She might have PTSD and forgotten the traumatic event itself, but she knows she was there and she saw that list of names.

She might have never known his name. Or if she did, she might have supressed the name (like her other memories from the event), so even if she sees the name in front of her, she might not recognise it.

I was hoping for dramabeans team's Just Between Lovers recap. I love this show. It's like a christmas present for me. I love those thiny bits of posts beenies make on their wall. It deals with things and event which are happening all over the world and with guilt. It's so hard to forgive yourself for something what is deeply impregnated in you. It's like dealing with cancer. There's no miracle treatment and the afterefects of chemotherapy are so strong. And the camera with the direction are amazing. It's so long time I enjoyed the backround music as well. All the best to you show in 2018!

If there wasn't a discussion after the drama on streaming pages I would miss all those little details, like the name list. I was like what? How can anybody survive for 7 days without water. Now it makes sense why Kang Doo was so week, with the leg seriously inflamed (fortunately he didn't pull out the piece of iron stabed in his knee, he would bleed out completely), when Ha Moon Soo's boyfriend was trying to grab Kang Doo's hand to pull himself out from the collapsing remains of the shopping mall.

I remember hearing dripping water in the collapse scenes, so perhaps he was able to drink from a broken pipe. Also long as he was not bleeding, moving around much or sweating he could have survived on very little water.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one watching this drama and enjoying the evocative music; I feel it's such a wonderful gem that touches on the scope of tragedy -- a disaster strikes but the ones who are dead are not the only victims, and the tragedy does not end when the just settles, it sometimes echoes on through decades after...

im currently in love with Prison Playbook(as you can see with my handle name, hehe). i cant wait for the drama to resume this week. even though netflix is testing my patient with week after broadcast sub. 😩

Shin PD has a god hand where he can totally squeeze a solid 90 minutes per ep, in which certain drama should not have followed the formula if they cant handle the time. especially for those with fantasy element.

im sadden by the reaction for Hwayugi mess. i just cant believe there is someone think there is a conspiracy theory about all this. this mess cause by internal issue, which should not happen in the first place.

Hwayugi set their foot wrong by insist on airing this a month after seunggi comeback. they are not prepare, LITERALLY FOR EVERYTHING! W-2 World tried to pre-produced 8 episode ahead of premier day, yet still struggle to finish the remaining ep. what more Hwayugi! they fired lighting team too a week before 1st ep even aired. WTF?!! what is going on with this production house?!!
then, come the issue where staff was told to hang a bloody chandelier 3 m high with no safety gear attach to him at 1 am in the morning. he fall pelvic first, then his head. that accident almost caused him to be declare brain death. now, with permanent disability in horizon, whose going to take responsibility of his mental and physical trauma?! you think you can compensate everything money, is it? even getting them in front of court will not satisfy those broken heart.

they should delay this drama for at least 2 weeks for me. i sure hope that the new director they bring in can at least fix what they have broken in the first place.

Late here. @sancheezy watching Ginatama Right now. Comedy works but all that shouting Literately is noise pollution.

Just Between Lovers - Episode 05 was boring but its theme was good but episode 06 made up for it. I'm reducing score from 8.5 to 8.
Why? You can only ignore all the convenient coincidences to a certain limit. Writer went overboard with it.

Hwayugi - C grade crap. wasted 3 hours.

I don't think the writer went overboard with coincidences. Sometimes real life happens this way - there's a karma issue on the line. The company possesses the land and wants to build where there's a land to built on. It happened 10 years ago, so they thought everything is forgotten and they can proceed. I don't think there's too much waste land to built on around Seoul by the way. I would consider it overboard if Moon Soo was a baby Joo Woon's crush and he realized that and is pursuing his SKdrama first love to make a wife kind of script.

I'm the other way around. I actually start to appreciate the writers after ep 6.

I get what you mean about coincidences, but I don't actually mind it here because the emotions and themes that accompany them are so on point for me.

Required fields are marked *

I think the only coincidence I don't like is that *SPOILER* Grandma seems to be the owner of the land... which it's likely she will leave to Gang Doo if she dies. Convenient.

It doesn't bother me too much because the main thing is the emotional journey, for our characters to be healed from trauma. And I still don't know how Grandma came to acquire that land, so I'll wait for a plausible explanation before fearing that we have a Candy hero on our hands (heh @greenfields).

I guessed that back in Ep. 3 or 4 when the Director said the owner of the land was a "Lucky Bastard" and then the next scene was a close up of Gang Doo who was with Grandma heh.

It doesn't bother me too much for the same reason, but I'm hoping for a plausible explanation too.

Hello Beanies!

Since this will be the last OT for 2017, I feel like I need to post something. Anyone still remember me? I know I have been MIA for about two months or less and I am not as active as I was before lately.

Back to kdramas, I've completed 34 dramas that aired this year in 2017 and 3 old kdramas. I'm quite impressed of myself and wondered how did I find time to watch all those dramas. LOL. I'm currently watching 3 dramas: Hwayugi, Just Between Lovers and Two Cops, and having 5 dramas on-hold: Witch's Court, Black, Mad Dog, The Package and Temperature of Love. I guess I will complete them in 2018 then.

Anyway, Happy New Year to all beanies here! Stay safe on this holiday season! Spend more time with your family, friends and beloved ones. Of course, you can spend your time with your fav oppas too! ;)

Happy Friday Beanies 😄,
It’s been a while I haven’t posted on the open thread, and right now it’s possible only because I took a day off 😅. With 2017 coming to an end, I thought writing the highlights of it would be a nice way to say goodbye 😊 :
◾◾ K-dramas
◾ Weightlifting fairy Kim Bok Joo : I’ve binge watched it during a weekend earlier this year = one of the happiest time of 2017 and one of the best decision of the year. I can always pick up from dramabeans year-end reviews to decide which show to binge watch, the only thing needed is time 😅
◾ Other shows I’ve binge watched and loved , sometimes being late in dramas isn’t a bad thing 😜 : My wife ‘s having an affair this week, Chief Kim, Age of youth, 38 task force, drinking solo, tunnel
◾ My father is strange : my first family drama, thank you @javabeans for your what we’re watching posts
◾ School 2017 : Tae Swoon 😍, Tae Coupon 😂, Kim Jung Hyun😎 : the first time I was so active on DB 😅 .
◾ Forest of secrets : best drama of 2017, I loved everything even the open ending which I don’t like usually, waiting for the S2 🤗 . Honorable mention for Circle (in this case I didn’t like the ending 😅)
◾ and last but not least : Oppa war 💕 🤣, after School 2017, my 2nd time being so active on DB and playing around with my Beanie level “a mere Chaebol’s poor doppelganger who stole the Chaebol’s credit card and self-appointed myself as the sponsor of the Oppa War event 😎” 😂. I also got a Sabu and a Sunbae *random hi to Sabu 😉 and hi to Sunbae 😉* . Oppa war = more drama than a drama and as hilarious as a K-show, welcome to dramabeans 😎 and thank you all Beanies 😘 . I think I’m going to read it all again tonight , need to prepare my cheeks before the non-stop laughs 😂

◾◾ K-shows : oh 2017 what a year 😵
◾ Hyori homestay , I love this show and I’m so glad they’re making a season 2. I need to thank again @Kabsy : your fan wall posts made me curious and I loved our common watching session 😉 .
◾ It’s dangerous beyond the blanket : inception time for an introvert , I’ll watch it happily if it becomes permanent
◾ New Journey to the West : Seasons 1 to 4 : I’ve binge watched seasons 1 to 3 and caught up with season 4 : I haven’t laughed that much in such a short time 😂
◾ Produce 101 S2 and Wanna One go : I’ve binge watched it after it aired : my guilty pleasure show of 2017, only to find out after watching it that Wanna One is going to disband 🤦‍♀️
◾ 1n2d : oh what a year : in the beginning of the year Jung Joon Young came back after his scandal = happy time but in October Gutaeng hyung (Kim Joo Hyuk) died 💔 = sad time, I cried and laughed watching the special ep , heartbreaking 😭, still can’t believe he’s gone. There was also the KBS strike, at least we’re going to have some new ep , hoping the strike will end officially in January.
◾ and the other ones I watched regularly : I live alone (the three idiots team 😂) , Infinite challenge (Yes I can 😂) , I can see your voice (handsome guy no.5 = fangirl mode on 😍 😂)

Open Thread Week 47! OMO, I've almost been posting on this for a full year! Happy New Year Beanies! And I'll be wishing everyone this again Lunar New Year as well! I'm on vacation time right now, which means I just woke up. (Does it seem like I take a lot of time off? I'll just refer up to @michykdrama above about burnout and such. Vacations is how I keep balanced between work and play.) Speaking about playing, drama watching was hugely productive this week!

"Forest of Secrets!" I've just finished episode 10, which was heavy on talking, less so on jaw-dropping reveals, but Shi Mok smiles and even lets out a chortle! I do like this one, but it doesn't grip me like "Lookout" and "Circle" did. Maybe I'm like stringofpurls and am burnt out by legal dramas.

The hubby then found "Lucid Dream" on Netflix. Was this called something else. It's a short drama with 8, 20 minute episodes. We watched it in one sitting, and I was on board with this whole premise (having "dreams" which are actual memories of a past life and then reincarnation into the present and meeting those people again.) And it's all about changing your fate. I even liked the twist at the end changing the antagonist from a man to a woman. But I totally lost it when she threw the heroine off the building (sorry for the spoiler). Like, who does that??? So our modern-day "cliff of doom" is a 10 story building. It also seems that that's the only way you can almost die in a kdrama, falling to your death, or would-be-death.

I also started "I am not a robot." Okay, this is getting really cute. On episode 3 now! And we also tried to start "Hwayugi" but when hubby saw the teacher ghost transform, he was like, pass. I was prepared for it having watched "Master's Son," but it totally caught him off guard. He's not a horror flick kind of guy (and neither am I, honestly) so this will likely just fall by the wayside. However, it is heartbreaking about the team member falling and being paralyzed. Now, I realize falls are common in kdramas because they are common during their production as well.

So I promised I would post my hubby's Christmas letter, and so this is the day!

Happy Friday Beanies!

Yesterday my end of the year review got posted, which in itself was the highlight of my week. The amount of likes and lovely comments I received were the icing on the cake. Thank you again, it might take two minutes to type, but it lingers with me for much longer. It makes me wonder why internet trolls exist, when you can make a bigger impact by just being decent online as well.
Christmas was fun too, but since it was my parents’ turn to host, it was very stressful to prepare, and very tiring to clean up. Then history repeats itself, this time for New Year celebrations… Part of me is already looking forward to January the 2nd, when normal life starts again.
I personally prefer New Year celebrations. My friends and I take turns hosting, and it is less demanding than the traditional family gathering I have on Christmas day.

A friend who lives far away usually stays the night to be able to join in on the celebrations. However, last year there was no time for K-dramas before the party, so this year she is staying the whole weekend because “we are watching Hwayugi before the party, no matter what”. I agree, I did not save myself and settle for Mini K-dramas this month for nothing. ;)
I hope you all have fun celebrating the new year, and I see you all back in 2018, as awesome as ever ;)

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been on the Open Thread! Hello, everyone! *waves* I saw the thread and felt the need to write a post because...

I woke up this morning feeling like I’m beginning to be burnt-out on dramas.

It’s my fault, really. I almost always only watch one or two dramas at a time. Normally, I keep up with one currently airing show and watch one completed show. However, right now I’m watching five dramas. That’s an insane number for me.

I think what makes all this worse is that BTLIOF’s run exhausted me. I wrote ESSAYS for almost every episode of that drama. It definitely wasn’t a chore because that show had me tight in its grasp and I just had to write down every single thought, but I really think it wore me down.

So yeah. I’m currently watching Smart Prison Living, I’m Not a Robot, Just Between Lovers, Circle, and oldie Dal-ja’s Spring. I’m actually enjoying all of them to various degrees but I woke up not feeling like watching or discussing any of them.

I just completed Police Unit 38 last night, which made me very sad because I’m officially out of good Seo In-gook dramas to watch. 😭 I still have No Breathing and his variety to look forward to, though.

Perhaps it’s just going to be a funky day and tomorrow will be better, but I have a feeling that I might be going on a little drama break soon. It happens to me every few months so it’s not unexpected, but it still makes me sad when I can feel it coming on.

The nice thing about DB is that people can come and go, and you can lurk, or participate, but someone will always be here to discuss dramas with when you do come back. I'm reminded of @javabeans post a couple months ago about her own existential kdrama crisis. It happens to the best of us. Take your time, enjoy your other hobbies and the people around you!

Thinking about 2017, my drama year has been less adventurous that I thought. Very few surprises have come, since I was only following live dramas.
Instead my surprises came from varieties (and the idol world).
First was 1n2d episodes, which I only watched those with Joo Won back in 2012. And my cutie was not variety material, but that's ok since everyone was supportive (except evil k-netz as always).
Then came knowing brothers, with its great ensemble cast. And my fave episodes being the one with infinite (so short, I wanted more), the Shinee one (Mino and Key were cute, Taemin was the sister 😂😂😂) and the one with EXO (all those jokes around DO being a serial killer 😂😂😂). And of course the Sechskies and Suju episodes now.
Then came an extreme amount of Suju varieties (and concerts).
And then the variety vinner of this year NJTtW (with season 4 being my fave).
Afterwards I got to know Daesung (thank you Fantastic Duo) and I changed my opinion on BigBang (slightly cause they still get those try-hard haircuts and clothes- just kidding I like them 😂😂😂). And I watched a ton of BB varieties and of course the family (family outing).

I don't think there will ever be a better variety time on SK as the one until 2010 (in a suju variety they had a farting game and a kicking and a slapping game), however I hope for more gems like this in 2018 (no matter how internet burried they might be 😅😅

I want to get to all the new dramas everyone is talking about, but I'm stuck in the past w/Introverted Boss. New Year's resolution - watch more dramas. It's more of a prediction than a resolution but whatever. Here's to a New Year and new dramas.

I'll take recommendations from that list too; I am in desperate need of comedy (general tiredness and Jonghyun pangs); I have just finished Noble My Love (short episodes, mindless fluff, looked just right) but I found it infuriatingly sexist. Anything that might cheer me up?

Out of that list I can only recommend Age of Youth 2; I have also watched Man Who Dies to Live, but I didn't like the main character's histrionics, and Because This Life is Our First, but I found it too slow and philosophical for marathoning.

On a different note, now I realise just how far behind I have fallen on my own to-watch list...

I have just watched episode 3 of Girls Generation 1979 with my sister and we were howling with laughter. I can see how it can also be touching. It's only 8 episodes, which is great! Thanks @seralovestteobokki for the recommendation. :)

Yeay, glad you enjoyed it so far. 8 epi is just perfect (Although how I wished it had longer episodes!)

I have only read good things about it; that's settled, I'll go ahead and give it a try, thanks! :-)

My picks from that list would be:
Forest of Secrets (mystery)
Strongest Deliveryman (fun)
Live Up to Your Name (fun)
Lingerie Girls Generation (touching and depressing)

A small disclaimer. Live Up to Your Name isn't always fun. I love the drama. It's just that it has a few heavy moments in there.

Forest of Secrets is good, but I'm not sure how you might like it given the lower scores you gave to procedurals.

That's a long list! I'll pick four :)

1 Go Back Spouses
(domestic feels ; hug your mom or dad or husband or boyfriend before and after watching the drama)

2 Temperature of Love
(first 8-12 episodes were GREAAAT! reaaally could have been something but yknow, draggy scenes happened /sigh/ but i'd still recommend this because YANG SE-JONG <3)

3 Because This Life Is Our First
(rom-com, comfy feels, great writing though slow~dramatic /literally/ delivery of lines from the female lead but hey, we got a fantastic male lead so all is well)

4 and my crack atm: Smart Prison Living
(genius show ; interesting main and side characters ; catchy wit and humor ; and most importantly... BROMANCE!

Depends on what you are in a mood to watch!

More on the thriller side: Forest of Secrets, Rescue Me...maybe Duel.
Lighter (rom-coms, etc.) - Because This Life is Our First, While You Were Sleeping, Meloholic, The Package (beautiful location shoots), Live Up to Your Name.
Family Drama: My Golden Life

Not recommended: Temperature of Love (starts out pretty strong but drags on the love triangle), Manhole (just fairly silly). Bride of the Water God is bound to be a disappointment if you really liked Goblin. Have only heard negative things about Hospital Ship.

I would recommend the following:
Strongest Deliveryman--it had enough heart in it to keep me interested.
Because This Life Is Our First--the writing in this drama was absolutely fantastic. Very strong characters who don't lose themselves halfway in. The lead couple is different but in a good way. Has some weighty issues, but they never feel to heavy. Lee Min-ki is all kinds of awesome.
Buamdong Revenge Club--I loved the members in the Revenge Club and their struggles. As actors, Ye Yo-won is compelling, Ra Min-ran is relatable, Myung Se-bin is heartbreaking, and Jun is endearing. The acting was quite good overall. There are a good bit of weighty issues, but there is also a good bit of humour as well.
The Package--I loved most of the characters outside of our lead couple. Their stories were quite interesting in a slice of life, relatable, don't judge a book by it's cover way. As many have said before, cinematography wise, it really is a beautiful drama.

BTW, I'm happy you have Tomorrow With You a high score. Why did you give Chief Kim a low score though? What about it you did not like?

Thank you for your recommendations! These are actually in my queue, I just don't know which one to watch first :))

It was a subjective thing, as Chief Kim's humor did not sit well with me. But I get why people like the drama :)

I find the questions regarding the efficacy of memorials that Just Between Lovers brings about interesting. We pass by many memorials each day but how many of them make us pause in remembrance? Did we even know about the event that the memorial was constructed for? Was the memorial built for society, the victims, the survivors, the families or all of these groups? I can’t help but think that the remembrance aspect of the memorial is in many ways a tomb on display for the general public. I guess the reason why its also for the general public is to remind us to not make the same mistakes or to be wary of the outcome of particular events/actions. How effective are memorials at doing this though? This drama rings through that at the end of the day, money—and politics—win.

Lastly, I absolutely loved that they showed the care and research behind the reconstruction of the memorial. Showing a memorial that was written in Chinese/Mandarine—I think—and another that was forgotten and uncared for in a remote location was genius.

I've also noticed how this topic of memorials has been woven into the story. It draws attention to them, in particular the questions you've mentioned, but not in a forceful way.

It's a physical manifestation of how people grieve differently. Some need to remember (Moon-so's mother) while others survive in not remembering (Moon-so). However, both ways can manifest differently in people (alcoholism, isolationism) and be disastrous to the person. Moon-so and Gang-do's search for a perfect memorial represents their search for a perfect way to grieve and let go.

I really could write essays on this show.

Yes I loved the hard work the writer put into crafting the thought process behind memorials. What kind of memorial is it? Mourning lives that were lost? Remembering them forever? Creating a space for those left behind to grieve publicly?

Further, how should lives destroyed by the tragedy be compensated? What if they could not be recompensed? What if some who are broken cannot be put back together again? What if some have gained financially from the compensation, and have led a better life, but if a better life is a bitter life, built on the ashes of someone's death, how can a memorial compensate, even in a small way?

Who is the memorial for?

I loved that whole heart breaking interview episode. Jumbo is knocking the soulful hurt injured puppy character out of the park.

lol. Junho is indeed knocking it out of the park.

You post got me thinking. People who lose a loved one at a young age often say that they no longer remember what the person's face looks like, and that is a source of sorrow for them. In a way, a memorial is like a picture of that person. It can only do so much in remembrance of that person.

Happy Friday beanies ☺

Last OT in 2017, and my wish as a k-drama fan girl for 2018 : "I hope I will get to like a drama which is everyone's favorite too"

Because earlier this month, I have this uncomfortable feelings about DB : "Dramabeans is a fun place when you are in the majority, but it's such a lonely place when you are included as a minority."

It's kinda traumatized me to come back to DB 😅 but then after a long day of thinking, I realize that no one can judge my happiness in watching a k-drama. I'm just glad that I have a healthier mindset now and don't have to leave DB because honestly I have nowhere else to go 😆

Here's hoping for a brighter dramaland in 2018 ! 😄

Welcome back! Difficult subject for you. Hope you can see the commentaries as lively dialogues and sometimes insightful views to the various dramas. Whether I agree or not or in the majority or not, the fun is in reading the different perspectives and trying (sometimes) to understand the reasoning behind them.

Just like making mistakes helps me learn better, hearing differing views actually makes things more interesting and informative. If we all agreed on everything - it would be pretty boring. Ha Ha.

Have a Happy New Year

Thanks for your kind and supportive words @tummy @seralovestteobokki @michykdrama 😊 This is why I love DB

I'm not sad anymore after I make peace with my own heart. DB does nothing wrong to me, it's just me and my silly thought 😂

Now I'll just have to constantly remind myself that not everyone has the same heart as me and DB will always be a fun hangout place
