Woo Do-hwan up to become Joy’s Great Seducer

Aha, we have an update on the Untold Scandal remake/adaptation drama that was announced recently, and I like almost everything about it:

  • Woo Do-hwan (Mad Dog, Rescue Me), 2017’s big breakout rising star, has now been offered the leading role, which would be his first leading turn. For someone who debuted in 2016, that’s a pretty swift rise, but I find him pretty damn electric onscreen so I’m excited about the prospect.
  • That means Yeo Jin-gu (Reunited Worlds) has passed on the role, which I feel way better about, because Yeo Jin-gu seems a little too young while Woo Do-hwan has the perfect rakish energy for this kind of character.
  • Red Velvet idol Joy (Liar and His Lover) is being courted to play the lead, and while I think her acting is still a bit green, she does have a very appropriate wide-eyed naivety (see: Liar) that makes her an ideal pick for the innocent target of seduction.
  • The drama has changed its working title to The Great Seducer, which I find a hair less awkward than the two-part former title, Love Game: The Great Seduction.

The drama is based on the movie Untold Scandal, which was based on the famous French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, in which a pair of bored and morally compromised aristocrats make a bet that a young man can’t seduce a virtuous woman. Untold Scandal placed the story in Joseon times and starred Bae Yong-joon as the young seducer, while Lee Mi-sook was the noblewoman who offered to sleep with him as prize if he could seduce the young widow played by Jeon Do-yeon. Naturally, complications arose when feelings developed.

The Great Seducer appears to reset the setting to contemporary times, which I’m a bit disappointed about, although this is a story that can work in any timeline (see: Cruel Intentions). Woo Do-hwan is up to play the dangerous and masculine lead character, Kwon Shi-hyun, who is the sole grandson heir in the JK Group conglomerate until he is suddenly cast out and thrown into a precarious situation.

Joy’s potential character is Choi Suji, whose mother is a hospital director and CEO who is seen as a role model for twentysomething women. She grew up in elegant circumstances and has an enviable background, though inside she harbors fears of being lonely. What unfolds is a “dangerous love game” with exciting twists as these characters are changed through love.

The Great Seducer will air on MBC in the first half of the new year.

I'm more interested who will helm this project honestly. This remake / adaptation is very much depend on the writer and execution in order for it become a hit or a miss. I was already less interested after knowing it will be adapted in modern time, and now it's even suprising to hear Joy is casted for Jeon Do-yeon's role in the movie version. I know many fans loved her in Liar, but it's indeed amazing how fast an idol can get a lead role in terrestrial drama, and her last drama wasn't a hit either. She is just 21 this year. Woo Do-hwan seems fine for me. Thank God Yeo Jin-gu declined this too because it means he can look for other projects worthy for his talent. Some reports said it will follow I'm Not A Robot in January, it seems like they need to finalise castings very soon.

I hope the production team no rushing the shooting and everything because nobody would want 2.0 Hwayugi mess.

Woo Do Hwan is already a master in flirting and teasing (see how Jang Ha-ri turn speechless) so there will be no problem in seducing a woman. I read some drama fans said Joy is toooo green. Sorry I had not watched her debut drama. So got to wait and see how she do in this drama then.

They still don't have any PD / writer attached at the moment as far as I concern, so January premiere seems almost impossible since I'm Not A Robot already had several epi aired.

I'm not crazy about WDH but he has that look to seduce any woman, so he seems a good choice for this role.

Joy is still green, but Woo Do-hwan is still a rookie too despite of how many praises he got (and at times he seems to be overly-praised) so this pairing might be working. It would be really jarring if the gap between both leading actors is like Hyeri - Jisung, Hyeri - Jo Jung-seok, or Lee Jun-ki - IU for example.

Based on the casting and the broadcast station, this is going to be just a fluffy version of it.
A cable channel would've given it more freedom to follow the original.

They just announced who are the second leads, Ahn Yeo-seop and Mun Ga-young. Based on these casts, I also think it would just be a fluffy version of it.

I agree. Woo do-hwan's acting in Mad Dog was a bit green too. He didn't really do natural anguish. But he was hot and his chemistry with hwayoung was great. Hope they can make this a bit risque, Joy has been showing off a more sexy image lately. I want hot kisses lol because i believe i saw the original and it was very adult

What a coincidence, I just came back from reading an article about this drama adaptation!

Well, these casting offers confirm it, they're are definitely sanitizing it to just 'playboy seducing candy heroine and falls in love in the process'. I'm not familiar with the original story( cautiously reading the synopsis for fear of spoilers) but for sure they'll be bitchy Second Female Lead and steadfast, gentle oppa Second Male Lead for viewers to compare and contrast with the Male Lead.

Which station aired On Thee Way To The Airport? I had hopes that even though it was going to air on a public channel, there was still a way to retain the seductive tension that can be even higher than the movie versions( since not showing something has a way of stimulating our imagination, leaving us with torturous, tantalizing creative possibilities) but now...well lets see.

Whichever way this goes, the writing and directing is the major concern since a good combination of the two can work with even the most hopeless of cases(not saying these two are since I haven't watched them yet).

Exactly my thoughts about the seductive tension, i hope they won’t turn it into a typical shiny romantic story, this plot needs a serious dark seductive, with lots of sexual tension, if it were on one of the cables I wouldn’t be worried about that side, I will not be expecting something mature since it’s on the public channel.

'playboy seducing candy heroine and falls in love in the process'

Yes, sounds like it would be something like this. The second female lead if based on Untold Scandal wasn't just a bitchy, but very commanding, charismatic and also has sex appeal (Lee Mi-sook was the one played the role). For drama version, if they are looking for actresses in 20s, I would say someone like Ryu Hwayoung (she has sex appeal, but not too commanding on screen imo) or Kang Hanna who I think is perfect but she has already attached to other drama. For older actresses like Yoo In-young or Honey Lee would be great for such role. I never read the novel or other versions, so my knowledge on the materials only limited to what was in Untold Scandal though.

By the way, OTWTTA was aired at KBS. I agree with the right direction and writing, this drama can retain the seductive tension between the main casts.

Hwayoung actually has a very strong aura onscreen, she's one of those actresses who really doesn't suit the 'sweet wide-eyed first love Candy' type of roles (Jun Ji Hyun is of the same type). Or maybe that's just my impression from her dramas.

She does have crazy chemistry with WDH but in this drama I imagine she would suit more the Sarah Michelle Gellar role in Cruel Intentions, not the Reese Witherspoon one.

Ah, OTWTTA was on kbs. How were they able to get away with such a controversial subject, and infuse such tension( in the early days of fighting off their attraction). I believe the ratings weren't that bad too.
Remember IRIS had hot kisses( and a bed scene, can't remember much), it was on kbs. Wait, wasn't Coffee Prince on mbc? So was Empress Ki and GFB(?) had that cave scene. I don't think they're that prudish but if they're casting Idols then....

Those actresses are great pics, Honey Lee and You In-Young would fit perfectly. I didn't even think of Ryu Hwa Young, but she'd be good as well. And of course, we have Lee El. Based in her Cindy character in Liar Game, she's perfectly capable of pulling the betting noble woman off.

I don't like the original story which I find too evil. So, I won't mind if they tone it down to be a love story with some seduction scenes only. I think the two leads are well selected. Woo Do-hwan proved himself in Rescue Me and Mad Dogs. I think he is the best among the rising male actors to play this role of seducer. Since Joy will be playing an innocent and virtuous woman that shouldn't be too demanding a role, I hope she'll be up to it.

I think part of that is that his image as a child actor is so strong - he's already 20 years old, meanwhile Sarah Michelle Gellar was 20 or 21 when she was cast in Cruel Intentions in THAT type of role. Uma Thurman was 18 when she did Dangerous Liaisons but obviously in Korea you can't have thar on tv.

The production team should take notes from The Last Jedi wherein there was palpable sexual tension between Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and Rey. I mean if Disney approved those scenes for the general audience, then it really says a lot about those actors who were able to sell their chemistry onscreen. I'm gushing 'cause I can't get over Reylo, lol.

Anyway, I humbly think that Woo Do Hwan will be able to deliver but I'm not so sure about Joy since I never watched TLAHL. I also agree with some of the beanies' comments here that since Joy is apparently a little green with her acting, then Lee Mi Sook's role should go to a slightly older actress. If the drama wants to pattern it after Cruel Intentions, then they could also choose an actress that has the same age as Woo Do-hwan since Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe were both high school students in the movie.

Cruel Intentions (modern teen version of Dangerous Liaisons) was amazing even in the modern setting but that was because they had a great cast and didn't compromise on the writing or acting.

But this version wants to cast Joy who basically can't do that much by way of acting and hasn't even been in a hit drama... idols from big agencies get lead roles so easily. Sure some idols are good actors, like Eunji, Ryu Hwayoung (ex-idol), Yoon Doojoon etc but uh, Joy isn't one of them.

This could have been interesting but judging by the current synopsis and description of the characters. It seems like the Dangerous Liaisons/Untold Scandal influence is minimal at best. It's going to be a sanitised Cruel Intentions with all the usual stock KDrama cliches and characters. They've even given an SM idol with minimal acting talent the lead so I think any expectations for this project can be kept at rock bottom.

Coincidentally I just finished watching the Chinese 2012 version of Dangerous Liaisons directed by Hur Jin-ho and starring Jang Dong-gun, Zhang Ziyi and Cecilia Cheung. (So good!) With the news of potential casting for this Korean drama adaptation of the novel, I am very happy with the offer out to Woo Do-hwan. I'm on the fence about Joy. I thought she was lovely in The Liar and His Lover but she is still very green; she got a role that was perfectly suited for her in that show. I feel like the female lead in any Dangerous Liaisons adaptation needs to have a lot of nuance in their acting and I'm not sure if Joy has the experience to portray that... But Woo Do-hwan -- YES! All the yes!

Woo Do Hwan’s energy is a little too mature for Joy even though they are close in age. I feel a more seasoned actress might suit him better. Joy is a talented actress with a lot of potential but I feel she’d be better off playing more supporting roles until she gains more experience. I like each of them separately, I’m not sure how they’ll look paired together.

Didn’t Woo Fo Hwan debut in 2011? Bit parts, though.

Omg...i don't know how I feel about this. Should I be happy that Do Hwan is going to back on the tv screen again? Or sad that the female lead is going to Joy? I think she's cute in Red Velvet but I'm not sure about her acting.

I have a weird feeling that one of them might drop the offer. If Do Hwan it would be because he says he likes doing meaningful dramas and often chooses interesting characters, which I'm not sure how much this is. Sounds like it will become a typical chaebol meets candy girl story. If Joy, I think SM may realise that she is still a bit too fresh off the boat in the acting realm and needs a bit more experience under her belt.

Side thought, it's funny that both Joy and Sung Jae were both in WGM which was basically used as their kickstart to getting into acting. But Sung Jae is still doing supporting roles which he is rocking at whilst Joy has gone straight into leading lady roles and...from what I've heard...not rocking as such.

I don't think Joy was necessarily bad at all in her first drama. She didn't stick out like a sore thumb imo, though, I was turned off TLAHL by the editing and weak plot. LMAO I'm laughing because the amount of hate for Joy in this thread is astounding. I watched the Liar and His Lover and if anything, she was the best thing about that drama. She was the only likeable one IMO and I thought she was super fresh and had a great vibe. Sure, she wasn't the best actress but ya'll, everyone was pretty sh*tty in that drama. Even LHW (who is supposed to be a much better actor) and who had more acting experience was bland as hell.

Sure, she's a rookie actress and she isn't the best at acting but this hate is really laughable. HE'S a damn rookie actor too so if anything, they are both on the same footing. The fact that his acting is getting praised left to right while she gets dragged (which she shouldn't be, since's she's not horrible) really pisses me off. He's actually way overrated and it's funny because I think they both have similar acting draws. Meaning, they both are rookie actors and a little green BUT they emote well; people can relate to them. If anything, the casting directors are gunning for Joy to star in this drama for assurance. If you compare them both, she definitely has more star power than he does. They're both rookies but she has a large fan base because she's part of RV. Perhaps if YJG didn't pass on this drama they couldn't picked a "real actress" since he has enough star power to hold his own and carry the drama. However, WDO doesn't have that. So before ya'll rudely drag Joy (and seriously, to an extent that she doesn't deserve) realize that she's being casted because your oppparrr doesn't have enough star power to lead a drama in his own right either. IMO, both actors are being promoted to leading status before their time so if you're going to drag one, ya'll better drag the other too. Sure, he has more acting chops than she does BUT not so much that she's undeserving to be his leading lady. I swear, the amount of childishness and bias is so damn ridiculous on this thread. Super disappointing.

Why is it that kpop fans think of literally all criticism of their idol's acting abilities as "hate"? No one is saying anything about this girl other than she hasn't yet shown any evidence of having the skills to land a lead role.

Go be disappointed all you want, but also ask yourself why no one has any such "hate" for Jung Eunji, Ryu Hwayoung, Sooyoung etc even when they were new to acting (hint: they were good at it).

tbh i don't see people dragging her that much in this thread, just some valid comments? I don't think that anyone was idolising him like a super mega top star either...I realise she has a large fanbase but that does not guarantee a series' success (*moon lovers*), does it? I'm not the greatest k-drama critic but I guess her acting screamed rookie idol-actor for some people (Rather than a more seasoned one). Her performance was okay in the liar (most of the drama was a mess tho, so it's not greatest praise in her filmography either)..to give her the lead in such a beloved story will definitely seem rather weird (then again they did not have a real direction to the story yet)..
I personally would love to see Joy in this drama (if it were to be as tantalising as some of the adaptations with plenty of salacious tension)..her idol persona lately might actually help her if the drama does go in that direction..she's sultry/sexy/matured? from what netizzens said..she can actually rock this role if she's guided correctly..

5

Required fields are marked *

Personally I don't think Joy gets that much criticisms compared to some other idols such as Suzy, Yoona, IU etc etc etc who are still criticised a lot even after years of acting debut. Saying she is green is not equivalent to hatred as well because it is a fact, and rightfully, people have the right to question her skill and anyone would agree if without her idol status and agency, it would be almost impossible for her to land lead role in short amount of time. There is a misunderstanding among fans that saying kdrama fans hate idols, which is quite a nonsense because there are also kdrama fans who are fans of kpop too. As a drama fan, the criticisms towards acting are not limited to idols. To be fair, there are many real actors have been criticised as well for bad acting skill.

Oppa love is strong in everywhere and tend to be overly-praised, even someone like Chae Soo-bin, Nam Ji-hyun and Oh Yeon-seo who have proved their acting chop for years and started from the bottom have been getting the hate / dislikes for not being equal to their oppa standard, what more someone green like Joy. I love these actors and have fav oppa too, but there are times actresses can shine more and have greater skill, but so often are not given enough credits.

The comments here about Chae Soo Bin when she booked that drama with Yoo Seung Ho were utter nonsense. And that girl is actually a good actress but you had people making up stuff about Koreans reacting to her doing 3 dramas in one year (when she's actually been praised for her acting on Naver comments for all 3 now) but it's complete silence about Yeon Woo Jin also having 3 lead roles in one year.

That isn't the same as people calling out poor/below average acting though. The ones who lose the most from this constant casting of rookie idols in drama lead roles isn't our oppas, it's the actresses who lose out on those roles.

@ Ms Sera, please leave IU out of this discussion. That statement in your introduction is kind of unfair. I know Dramabeans hated IU on Moon Lovers (judging from the year-end review) but the other half of k drama land (Dramafever, other review blogs) also loved her performance as Hae Soo. IU may not be a great actress but she is decent in her own right. I don't like to criticize idol actors because there were also seasoned actors in k drama land that have acting controversies and no one throw sticks and stones at them for sucking badly.

typical kpop fan, sorry this isn't omonatheydidnt or tumblr or whatever kpop fansite you came from. You sound like that type, sorry if this site isn't all blindly fans of idols like you.

Complain all you want but we will "rudely" keep calling bad acting what it is when we see it, if you don't like it then you are free to go to some other site. You'll be better off praying for this girl to be good at acting than attacking commenters here for plainly speaking their minds.

And it's a fact that WDH acting has been much better received than hers both in Korea and outside when he didn't even have a lead role (Save Me), why should we "drag" the good actor along with the not-good idol actress for some misplaced attempt at 'equality'? By that standard should we be dragging Lee Jun Ki along with IU too, for Moon Lovers? Drag Jo Jong Suk along with Hyeri?

"she's being casted because your oppparrr doesn't have enough star power to lead a drama in his own right either" so is that why her last drama failed? lol. Anyway on a serious note no one's hating on her , people are just complaining that she is a bit green when it comes to acting (which i agree) where as Woo Dohwan is PRETTY GOOD. Joy can act but she needs to start with supporting role and maturing up her acting (just like woo dohwan did, boy didn't get a lead role out of nowhere) rather than trying for a lead role and getting hate.

also real actresses deserves the chance first than idols who are not even experienced in acting, a very fine example Woo Jinah in just between lovers, selected out of 120 actresses and yes her acting is good.

Hear, hear. Good job pointing out facts and logic, like you said her drama flopped, meanwhile his did well. Just the facts!

Idols should really start with supporting roles like most actors and gain the skills and experience before getting lead roles.

I saw many hate comments towards joy and its more like simply idol bashing than anything. But what u say here is right, idol should start from bottom like any rookie actors if they want a solid career. They might get offered leads for whatever reasons, but often in weak projects with simple script and all green cast, in general dont do well in rating or critics. On the other hand if u accept small but interesting role besides senior actors who back up the whole project anw, and higher chance of good ratings, audience and pd might take u more serious and u might get quality projects with more weighty roles next time.

Since I'm not really that familiar with kpop I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find out that some supporting characters I like in the dramas I watch are actually idols. I feel like idols can bring just as much impact with good supporting roles, and most times even a better impression than they do by jumping into lead roles so quickly.

I kinda dig it, actually. I feel like Joy could be unintentionally sexy if they were to write it well. I like how they look in the side by side and think there could be great chemistry there. Just get a good team behind them and the rest should be easy peasy, I think.

I'm glad Jin Gu cause as much as I love him, I did think he was too young for the role. I was excited for this project at first, because against all hope I was hoping that they'd do something different and we'd get to see a more sexy and seductive drama, but I'm definitely thinking they're going to clean this up a whole lot which will unfortunately turn it into your typical drama.

About the casting, I've only seen Do Hwan once, but I think he can pull the role off well. While Joy was decent in Liar, there were a few places where I could see the flaws. Joy was good at playing a high schooler, and I guess she could be decent here too, depending on the role, but the potential casting of Joy and the station just cements that this wont be the drama I wanted it to be.

Why does no one ever cast Nam Ji Hyun for these roles? She is young and an excellent actress, give her some love.

Alright. While I'm iffy about Joy's acting. But with recent image change of Joy, I feel she can pull of the sort of sultry and alluring aura required for this kind of character. Though most important is the writer and PD, otherwise it's all for naught. So as long as the team behind it is good, I could look forward to this. and I'm already liking the chemistry and vibe of both actors together from the picture above, they both exude a mature aura. But, let's see. If done right, this drama could be something totally up my ally.

While I have watched both actors in one project only, I have to say I dropped Liar because the plot was too boring and nobody was spicing it up. But I kept watching Mad Dog because of WDH, so I guess that explains a lot.

The theme is interesting and if done right I might watch it. I hope it takes more of an dark evil path than the romantic fluff cuz let's be honest, we see romantic fluff everywhere and we might get bored. I just hope that the casting would fit and they would sell the chemistry, because ultimately that's what we want.

Also, if you could stop bashing SM that would be cool. I have no idea what SM has to do with these idols acting cuz so far the company is concerned about the idol image not the actress or acting image. I might be wrong, I don't honestly know, but I won't blame anyone directly.

Yes, WDH was amazing in Mad Dog but while I keep hoping for the best from both characters, I'm really more concerned about the writing and the cinematography.

I mean, God bless them.

Wo Do Hwan is beyond perfect for this role! I can totally see him pull it off plus I've been waiting for his next project since mad dog and it's coming earthly next year! Hope it ends up well and that the network is able to be as daring as a cable network with the content lets see something different shall we?

I’m actually excited for this drama and I really liked Woo Do hwan in Mad Dog but I’m little bit worried that if Joy will be able to act well. I watched few episodes of Liar and his lover and I have to admit that even tho Joys acting was a bit awkward it fitted the role well. I think some other actress would have been maybe a better choice but I’m cheering for Joy. Lately Joy has shown us more mature and sexy side on group promotions so I hope that will be shown also in the acting. And also I hope this drama would have some deeper side to it. I think the plot is ok but the writers and directors need work it out to make it good. I hope it won’t come out as basic love story that we see so much!

Well..
Many people think that joy will most
likely not do well, but this character is so different from the first one she played. She's supposed to be classy ,sexy and most importantly a women!just like joy.She will do a lot better than in the first one as shes not playing a girl/innocent type!!sorry for eng.

Woo Do Hwan is perfect for the role based on his cuteness in "Save Me." It will help that he is a new actor and people (especially girls) will be interested in his acting as a seducer.

Joy's popularity and innocence will help attract fans to watch.

This team-up is absolutely on the money and I will definitely watch this!

I'm actually excited about this. Embarrassingly, I actually super loved Cruel Intentions in all it's cringy, super-messed-up-relationships, guilty-pleasure inducing glory. Of course, there are also the other Dangerous Liason movies in their various settings, a few of which I've seen. I have not seen the Korean movie this will be adapted from though. I'm curious how this adaption will turn out. Especially as a series rather than a movie.

I wonder who the rest of the cast will be? I'm cautiously optimistic about Joy (she is green but I do find her likable and passable), and Woo Do-hwan seems like he could pull off the character.

I sincerely think there's no need for shame in liking Cruel Intentions, it's a well made movie with a great story and a great cast. Just because it's set in a high school and the characters are teenagers doesn't make it bad.
