Woo Do-hwan up to become Joy’s Great Seducer

Aha, we have an update on the Untold Scandal remake/adaptation drama that was announced recently, and I like almost everything about it:

  • Woo Do-hwan (Mad Dog, Rescue Me), 2017’s big breakout rising star, has now been offered the leading role, which would be his first leading turn. For someone who debuted in 2016, that’s a pretty swift rise, but I find him pretty damn electric onscreen so I’m excited about the prospect.
  • That means Yeo Jin-gu (Reunited Worlds) has passed on the role, which I feel way better about, because Yeo Jin-gu seems a little too young while Woo Do-hwan has the perfect rakish energy for this kind of character.
  • Red Velvet idol Joy (Liar and His Lover) is being courted to play the lead, and while I think her acting is still a bit green, she does have a very appropriate wide-eyed naivety (see: Liar) that makes her an ideal pick for the innocent target of seduction.
  • The drama has changed its working title to The Great Seducer, which I find a hair less awkward than the two-part former title, Love Game: The Great Seduction.

The drama is based on the movie Untold Scandal, which was based on the famous French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, in which a pair of bored and morally compromised aristocrats make a bet that a young man can’t seduce a virtuous woman. Untold Scandal placed the story in Joseon times and starred Bae Yong-joon as the young seducer, while Lee Mi-sook was the noblewoman who offered to sleep with him as prize if he could seduce the young widow played by Jeon Do-yeon. Naturally, complications arose when feelings developed.

The Great Seducer appears to reset the setting to contemporary times, which I’m a bit disappointed about, although this is a story that can work in any timeline (see: Cruel Intentions). Woo Do-hwan is up to play the dangerous and masculine lead character, Kwon Shi-hyun, who is the sole grandson heir in the JK Group conglomerate until he is suddenly cast out and thrown into a precarious situation.

Joy’s potential character is Choi Suji, whose mother is a hospital director and CEO who is seen as a role model for twentysomething women. She grew up in elegant circumstances and has an enviable background, though inside she harbors fears of being lonely. What unfolds is a “dangerous love game” with exciting twists as these characters are changed through love.

The Great Seducer will air on MBC in the first half of the new year.

On one hand, I love Joy and I'm happy she's getting exposure through another acting opportunity. But on the other, I'm gonna be so jealous of her.. and ultimately am still hung up on Hari & Minjoon... ;w;

I'm definitely still hung up on that couple. The fact that we got zero kiss scenes and just a ton of hinted heated exchanges makes me sad that Do Hwan will go straight into romancing someone other than Hwa Young. I just miss Hari and Minjoon too much...I'm not sure I can watch this drama. Also I didn't really like Cruel Intentions.

Isn't Joy too young for the role? I don't think her image as a RV idol will suit this role if they go all the way original. I agree it will have to be the cute and fluffy version.

I hope Joy can redeem herself in this drama. Didn't even finished watching her first drama because of poor storyline. I hope this drama will give her a chance to really showcase her improved acting skills. Do Hwan is really good. He is one of the best new actor this year. Im sure he will go far as an actor.

At first glance i thought hes Seo kang joon lol.
The plot sounds too typical so far. They shouldnt change the target, seducing a widow is much more interesting than a naive girl.

Someone else posting here remarked how funnay he finds it to read the amount of negative comment that goes on about idols. Often the most sever criticisum is from females about female idols. Of course in a forum where free speach is the order-of-the day that is not only permissable but to be expected. I just want to say to those decryers of Joy and the music idols, their managers producers, bands and fans That this was all fantasy, a make believe land not reality; though based on and highlighting some of the pressures and tensions of the real world (though mostly hidden) of South Korean Idols, Musicians and Celebrities.

Joy was chosen for Liar albeit a virtual novice actor because she is anything but novice in the music world. She is eye candy with the lightness and sweetness of youth and has a voice to easilly shine in a way to make it appear effortless.

Without the bands, their music and the rivalry the drama would have been ‘nothing’ many of the characters were excellent foils to propel the naritive. Unfortunately Korean drama is foist on its own petard of ridiculouse tropes taken to the nth degree by lazy, or poor writers and an industry which is used to exploiting both its idols and audience.

Females the world over have very little in the way of charitable words for their (rivals) own kind. This armchair criticisum from self professed judges of acting ability is tedious and overdone. I balme the ‘social media’ adiction you have grown up with, it has distorted your personalities.

....blah blah blah, yet another kpop fan who wants to defend crappy acting as 'feminism'.

And if her being a singer is so important to her drama, are there no actresses who can sing? Most idols can't sing anyway, and both male and female idols get harsh criticism on db for not being able to act, so there goes your 'social media makes females unkind only to other females' argument.

I'm a little late on this, but I just checked back and saw that not only did Woo Do Hwan confirm, but Kim Min Jae is the 2nd lead!!! A small part of me is sad that we missed the opportunity to see secret fraternal twins Yeo Jin Goo and Kim Min Jae in a drama together, but my undying love for WDH makes it all okay.

How come it says Joy plays the role Choi Suji when she actually plays Eun Tae Hee?
