Premiere Watch: Radio Romance, Cross, Misty

We’ve got a varied set of premieres this week in dramaland, with everything from romance to murder mystery to prison yard revenge. Seriously though, why can’t we seem to escape prison this season? Did all the stations go in on a group rate to build that one prison set, and now they have to get their money’s worth? It would explain a lot.

Radio Romance

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m looking forward to the sunny, upbeat vibe of Radio Romance, which isn’t a romantic comedy, but still seems plenty sweet. It’s about the goings on at a radio show and a romance that blossoms between the DJ and the writer, which is simple but more appealing to me than the traditional workplace drama. Maybe I just find radio romantic.

Kim So-hyun stars as the junior writer of a healing radio talk show who lives for radio but can’t actually write very well, and Yoon Doo-joon plays a top star who’s paralyzed without a script, but somehow gets roped into being the host of a live radio show where nothing goes according to plan. The scriptwriter is new and PD Moon Jun-ha has done some drama specials (Hair Show, Pianist), so that’s not much to go on. The star power is the main draw here, so the real question will be how the chemistry fares between Yoon Doo-joon and Kim So-hyun, and whether it’ll be enough to overcome our initial worries about the pairing.

Cross

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Medical revenge thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This won’t be your average medical drama, even though it IS about a bunch of surgeons, and Go Kyung-pyo even plays a geeeeeenius doctor with enhanced left brain capacity (of course he does). It’s actually a revenge thriller with an unusual premise, about a man who devises an elaborate plan to become a prison surgeon so that he can take revenge on the man who killed his father. Apparently Go Kyung-pyo’s character thinks medical school is where you learn to kill people, because he hones his skills in order to kill in the slowest, most painful way.

The cast includes Jo Jae-hyun and Jeon So-min as a father-daughter pair who work in the hospital’s organ transplant ward, who must be part of the humanizing influence on Go Kyung-pyo that makes him waver. The show’s tagline is super dramatic but captures the dilemma perfectly: “Good and evil, life and death, revenge and salvation. What choice will the one holding the scalpel make?” PD Shin Yong-hwi of OCN’s Tunnel is at the helm, and screenwriter Choi Min-seok of My Brilliant Life and Blind is making his drama debut, so I think we can expect heart-pounding thrills.

Misty

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Mystery melodrama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: It’s Kim Nam-joo’s drama comeback six years after a string of hits (You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, Queen of Reversals, Queen of Housewives), so she’s definitely the big draw and the reason to watch. She headlines Misty as the nation’s top news anchor, a poised and ambitious woman who is never satisfied with what she has and is always hungry to achieve more. One day a shocking murder scandal hits the news, and she’s one of three main suspects in the case. This is starting to sound a lot like Return

She’ll be defended by her prosecutor-turned-public-defender husband, played by Ji Jin-hee, and the drama is as much about their tumultuous relationship and what their marriage goes through as it is about the murder mystery. The script comes from a new writer, so we don’t know what to expect there, but PD Mo Wan-il of Beautiful Mind and Sirius should deliver on the moody mystery. And on a shallow note, Kim Nam-joo and Ji Jin-hee make the most gorgeous couple. What do you suppose she eats? Unicorn hooves?

I'd be so excited for something cute like Radio Romance but I won't tune in because Kim So Hyun just looks *so young*. Sigh.

The other definitely sound interesting though and Kim Nam-joo and Ji Jin-hee ARE insanely hot together!

I have no doubts that Yoon Doo-joon and Kim So-hyun will be cute together. I just hope Kim So-hyun's character is meant to be around twenty, otherwise her casting is horribly wrong.

I wonder if makeup could help make Kim So Hyun look older.

I watched it. To my surprise, So Hyun doesn't look as young as she is - much like Let's Fight, Ghost. She has this mature charm that works despite her youthful looks. Honestly, I'm older than her and there were plenty of times I was thrown off and thought of her as an unnie lol

The first episode was pretty cute and I love her character!

She is playing the role as an adult and she's owning it, imo. Someone even calls her noona in the first episode 😂

I'm still not over with Ji Jin-hee and Kim Hyun-jok's sizzling chemistry in I Have A Lover, but I'm looking forward to see their chemistry with their current partners because both Kim Nam-joo and Kim Myung-min are so freaking awesome too. Old is gold, indeed.

Misty is what I look forward the most for this week.Radio Romance for some cutesy, but call me shallow, my main draw is Yoon Park and his facial hair. 😎
We have Jo Jae-hyun and Kim Ji-han in Cross who are rocking in that doctor gown, my question is if I want to see another medical drama which is zzzz and prison drama again, after something awesome like Wise Prison Life? Not really buying Go Kyung-pyo's in these teasers because he looks like a lost puppy, I found his at his best in romcom, but I respect his choices to try different roles.

*melts into a puddle and flows away* I can't watch this drama. It won't be good for my existence.

Hahahaha - it doesn't appeal to me too much sadly. I'll probably catch the beginning because Yoon Park and that beard, but pretty alone isn't enough to keep me.

Who knows though? I'm open to being pleasantly surprised.

I know you'll be watching at least the opening as well. :D :D

Even if I don't have time to watch full epi, I'll be checking some clips particularly his scenes LOL.

1

If the show gives Yoon Park a makeover with a clean shave I will throw my old radio through the screen! His goatee is already giving me a serious case of SLS.

3

@kimbapnoona & @seralovestteobokki - the sisterhood of 'love-for-Yoon-Park's-goatee', thank you for understanding my feels about this, ^^

2

@greenfields and @seralovestteobokki
I can already see myself while watching Radio Romance asking important questions like "WWYPGD?" (What Would Yoon Park's Goatee Do?)

3

@kimbapnoona - me gad. You've suddenly given me the most definite reason to check out this show. 'What would Yoon Park's goatee do?' (WWYPGD) I feel compelled to find out.

And in K-dramaland, I fear The Goatee may feel too alone, there are so few of its kind. I sincerely hope it finds others: 'To Be or Not to Be' better not be the sub-plot leading to a Yoon Park makeover; or more screens will be lost to old radios.

2

@greenfields Today I have fulfilled the Beanie's oath by persuading a fellow Beanie to watch more dramas. Hwaiting, greenfields, hwaiting. 👊

3

@greenfields @kimbapnoona I couldn't resist it so I checked his clips yesterday! Just a little spoiler - he went to his office straight away from airport after back from his vacation and greeted everyone he met with 'Namaste' LOL (his clothes was also sooooo....)😆😆😆 How come people don't love him! He is weird but charming in his own way!

2

@seralovestteobokki @kimbapnoona - Namaste? Guys he's speaking my language! 😍 oh no! Now I really don't think I can handle this. My mind will melt.

1

I just watched the first episode and when I saw Yoon park's entrance, I was like no wonder he is your new oppa......he was charming😉

Omo I'm trying to picture our resident puppy Go Kyung-pyo being a cold blooded murderer (even if it is for revenge) and like...how??? He's so squishy you just wanna squish him! Which might get you stabbed with a scalpel, but at least you squished him right?? *imagines pouty angry Go Kyung-pyo* omg stop it brain! I'm trying ti take him seriously!

I know! I kind of laughed a teensy bit at the thought of a cold-blooded killer Go Kyung-pyo! I wanna tune in just to see how he pulls it off... maybe he’ll show an impressive amount of versatility! Actors who can be both convincing puppies and psychopaths are my favorites.

Oh yes. I loved Bogummy in "I Remember You." He was such a sad broken little psychopath with the face of an angel and hyung issues! I still feel sad whenever I hear the OST from that drama. Hopefully Go Kyung-pyo will also turn out to be such a versatile actor and prove that he's more than a sweet puppy and the world's nicest guy.

That Dear Cloud song on the OST always gets me ❤️ Love that show to bits.

Have you seen Coin Locker Girl? It's one of his earlier rolls and he is 100% bad guy in that movie. It works, too. Maybe because he's kind of a sleazy bad guy with the whole gangster tacky wardrobe and fists of fury. I'll be curious to see if he can pull of educated, cold-blooded bad boy.

I think I'm looking forward to Misty the most. Which is surprising to me. But the poster looks gorgeous and I'm getting all Good Wife vibes with a side of power hungry Kim Nam-joo. I bet that will be a sight to see! Unni always looks so elegant and just straight up beautiful. I can't wait to see her sink her teeth into this role and give it all she's got!

Would the birth secret reveal that he is actually a chaebol? Are there gonna be prison cohabitation hijinks? Would someone get cancer and all the prison mates will have to do some healing together?

Show. Please. All of the above.

Most methodical serial killers were found to have above average intelligence. (Well, at least that's what my previous american TV shows taught me. haha!)

Our resident doctor avenger is looking good. Might check it out for Kyung Po and to get my mystery thriller fix.

*pun not intended*

Definitely going to check out Radio Romance. I want to watch it for Doojoon! It’s been a while since he’s been in a drama so I hope this one is a good one. A nice, fluffy, & heartwarming romance.

Kinda, sorta interested in Cross, but I can’t juggle many dramas on my plate anymore. Misty sounds pretty good too, but I don’t have an urgent pull towards it right now. xD

None of these stories sound especially interesting. But I'll probably at least start them because there won't be so many other dramas to watch because of the Olympics.

I love Go Kyung Pyo but I hate medical dramas... Decisions decisions 🤔
Also, I'm interested to see how he does in a darker role like this. So far I've only seen him in roles where he was the lovable, boy-next-door type. But do I really want to sit through a medical drama to find out 🤔

I loathe revenge medical dramas. I disapprove of anyone pursuing medicine in order to take revenge.
However, I do hope that it's being handled in a similar manner like "Dae Jang geum."
I wish this was a sageuk for Jo Jae-hyun. He was fantastic in "Jeong Do-jeon."

"Did all the stations go in on a group rate to build that one prison set, and now they have to get their money’s worth?"

hahahaha..it seems the stations always coincide with the same genre at one time doesn't it? it's kind of annoying really.

Cross sounds interesting - a hero that's bent on murderous revenge which would really make him more of an anti-hero..i'll put this on my to be watched later list.

Cross: Watched ep1, good start but not sure where this kind of story can lead. Too often these revenge plots turn into Jello around the 6th episode.
