Lee Jun-ki offered tvN legal-action drama Lawless Attorney

There are multiple reasons to be excited at news of Lee Jun-ki (Criminal Minds) being courted for another tvN drama, not least because that means Lee Jun-ki is likely to come back to television soon, which I always welcome, even if his projects don’t always turn out so well. But apparently I will never give up on him despite a number of subpar dramas (Criminal Minds, Scholar Who Walks the Night, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo…), because he’s due for a good one any day now, right? Right?

This new series is called Lawless Attorney, and if Lee Jun-ki accepts the offer, it would reunite him with his Time of Dog and Wolf director, PD Kim Jin-min (who also directed The Liar and His Lover, Marriage Contract, Pride and Prejudice, and La Dolce Vita). As Dog and Wolf was one of his best dramas, the idea fills me with cautious optimism, especially since this drama looks to bring back Lee’s grittier side as a former gangster turned lawyer on a revenge mission.

The role Lee Jun-ki is considering positively in Lawless Attorney is Bong Sang-pil, a “gangster lawyer” who doesn’t trust the law and feels free to use his fists. He takes advantage of loopholes in the law and boasts an excellent win rate. Other lawyers may consider the legal code sacred, but he considers it more of a tool “like an appliance user manual.” He fights against those in absolute power, standing all alone in the world, driven solely by the thought of avenging his mother.

Lawless Attorney promises an exciting story of growth of maturation, as well as action and thrills. Well, it’s Lee Jun-ki, so action is just a gimme at this point. The drama is being planned as a Saturday-Sunday drama to follow writer Noh Hee-kyung’s Live, which follows currently airing Hwayugi.

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE: Subtitles are being done at V I K I. They are very very very slow. By checking the episodes percent completion at V I K I, you can find out the episodes subtitle status. When it is more than 95% compete, it should be here shortly.

they wasted the MCW+LJK pairing in Criminal Minds. After the back-to-back duds of Goodbye Mr.Black and Criminal Minds where she didn't get to do much, I think she may want to consider stepping away from action dramas for her next role and do a sageuk instead.

If Lee Jun Ki takes on this role, I'm thinking maybe someone like Seo Ji Hye, who is talented and primed for a leading role. The drama sounds like it will definitely be hero-centric, so top star actresses may not want to take it on.

I'll definitely in if Seo Ji-hye is cast. She is one versatile actress in kdramaland. It's long overdue for her to be a female lead anyway. She also recently gained more popularity for Black Knight, it's better for her agency to strike the iron while it is hot. Moon Chae-won sadly had no luck with her last two drama. Maybe she should back with a sageuk or do more movies.

Other potential female leads -maybe Lee Honey or Kang Hanna. Namoo (LJK's agency) seems like to mix their actors in one drama - so it might be a possibility the female lead will come from their agency too -such as Park Min-young, Shin Se-kyung, Park Eun-bin, Kim So-yeon etc etc aside from Moon Chae-won. My pick will be Kim So-yeon, she and Lee Jun-ki will make a badass and gorgeous pairing, with or without loveline.

Please god, not Shin Se Kyung. She is terrible and her casting will be an injustice to Lee Jun Ki.

My top pick is Seo Ye Ji. But I also love the idea of having Kang Hanna or Park Min Young.

4

But just like what I discussed with @kiara below, I prefer the not-so-good actress to be picked for this drama, because this writer tends to neglect female characters in his drama / movies. This is going to be male centric drama anyway, why should waste talented actress if she is going to be an accessory only.

1

Moon Chae-won just finished filming "Auspicious Grave" a sageuk film with Jo Seung-woo, Yoo Jae-myung and Ji-sung.
It is the 3rd instalment of the "Face Reader" series.
I don't see it coming out any time soon until the 2nd instalment is out, ("The Princess and the Matchmaker" with Shim Eun-kyung and Lee Seung-gi).

I wouldn't want her in this drama with this writer but this would be good for Lee Jun-ki though if he takes it because the focus will be on his character.

Plot sounds OK but it can only either be hit or miss. I hope the writer will be a good one because this PD is quite good.

Anyway, I'm waiting for the day when this man will be a simple and normal human being in a romance melodrama or romcom. I know he is good in sageuk or thrillers, but I want to see his performance in what could be plain and less interesting role in writing, but somehow his acting and approach to the role able to make the character stand out. Maybe that time I'll properly become his fan.

@seralovestteobokki I love a simple role for LJG too (he did too many intense characters and I love to see him as a normal character, e.g. my Ear Candy was a good example, although it was a variety show)... But I feel rom-coms can be too cheesy for him, he is not a cheesy-romance actor at all... I would say a not too tragic melodrama would be a good fit for him

We've been talking about PD Kim Jin-min lately and I guess the drama gods heard us.
Kind of sad that Jung Ha-yeon and PD Kim are not working together in his upcoming MBC drama. "Sin Don" and "La Dolce Vita" some of their best work.

Well, finally Jun-ki got a very competent PD so I hope he'll sign on cause I'm tired of watching his last few crappy dramas.

Yoo Seong-yeol is due for a drama and he is already on CJ's payroll with OCN. Just pair them up please.

Oh well, looks like it won't be this one but there is still hope for a reunion with Jung Kyung-ho.

1

I have never experience watching Yoon Hyun Ho work. But with Kim Jin Min at the helm I might try just to see initial episode.

1

"The Attorney" was an excellent court intriguing film with the usual big names like Song Kang-ho, Oh Dal-su etc.

I didn't finish "Remember." It turns into a slow cryfest instead so I think he wasn't used to stretching his story to 20 hrs instead of a 2 hr film.
Sometimes there needs to be a little victory here and there to keep you interested. It was incredibly frustrating but realistic so I can't really fault him.
Coming from Song Kang-ho to Yoo Seung-ho is another story.

Anyway, he's a great film writer who is adapting to dramas so maybe this will be more like "Forest of Secret."

1

thanks Kiara...
Well It seems writing a meaty good story for a drama is more challenging for a writer than writing a movie.

1

I agree and I think that's why it's rare for writers to go back and forth between Dramaland and Chungmuro like actors.

1

@kiara for the most part, I find director and writers used to stick of what they get used to, particularly director. There is some case drama director produce movie, but not that many. You can tell pd Kim Jin Min has the talent goes to the big screen? but he is mostly in a small screen. Or am I missing something? Haha

1

Based on an article I read, the writer will be Yoon Hyun-ho. For drama,he wrote Remember which was just so-so imo but I think his movies were good like Confidential Assignment and I loved & enjoyed The Attorney a lot.

I agree with you. Even in Remember, Park Min-young's character was plain and just like a supporting character. Ugh I need to take back my pontential female leads for this drama as my reply to @ar 😂. Honestly this is kind of show I don't really mind if they cast someone like Yoona (the possibility is there because she worked with him in CA and casting her will help to create more hype) or other idols
or mediocre actresses for female leads.

This looks very interesting! Lee Jun-ki and Kim Jin-min both really need a good project right now, so hopefully they can make it happen with their combined strength haha. I wonder who the writer will be.

I've pretty much gone off radar for the last two months because nothing airing seems worth it, but 2018 might turn out to be a good year in the end. March is potentially going to be the best month in a long, long time--Jung Ha-yeon and Ahn Pan-seok making comebacks (plus Son Ye-jin finally working with the right people again 12 years after Alone in Love? Yes please!!), and the IU/Lee Seon-gyun/Kim Won-seok thing might be decent.

And now at some point we get our Kim Jin-min back, too! Awesome :D

I'm not really watching any TV at the moment except RPDR All Stars 3, but I've been following that show for so many years it's more out of habit than anything haha.

I like anime, but I need to try live action Japanese dramas sometime. I'm glad you're having fun :) Sometimes the Japanese sensibility is a very nice break from the Korean one. Both have depressive undercurrents, but I feel like Korean stuff tends to embrace its pain a lot more, if that makes any sense lol.

Are you watching the Olympics? I'm not really big on winter sports, but I always tune in for the snowboarding for some reason.

I'm not as big of a fan of anime like you but I like it a lot. I only started watching when "Howl's Moving Castle" came out because Christian Bale did Howl's voice <3. It became my fav just like that.
I'm waiting for "Boro" and "How Will You Live? " Hopefully I won't get hit by the truck of doom before it comes out lol.

So true about Japanese sensibility and that's part of the reason why I love Yuji Sakamoto's work.
Before I watch one of his dramas I'd buy sushi first.
Nothing like a good meal and a good drama. Then I'd cry over a box of strawberry pocky sticks by the end of the show lol.

I've been watching snowboarding for that cutie Chloe Kim and that kid Gerard is hilarious when he talks about his family and their love of alcohol. Sounds like a K-drama family, it made me laugh so hard and I hope they feel right at home in Korea.
I watched Shiffrin's race last night and that was it. I'll probably watch whatever my mom watches.
I'm just not into it like the summer olympics.

I find it funny that most of the time we are watching the same thing. It's really weird.

1

Chloe Kim <3 I also like the Russian figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva (she's an anime nerd and did a routine to Sailor Moon's theme last year lol), so I'm going to try to watch her compete, but I don't really enjoy skating that much tbh. For some reason I remember talking to you about women's gymnastics like yesterday, but that was two years ago already!

I love Howl's Moving Castle! I read the book it's based on as a child, but the movie is a lot better imo.

I totally agree. Everything is better with food lol. I made bibimbap today, but I had nothing to watch while I ate haha. I need to pick Just Between Lovers back up again.

1

Yay. I am so excited the moment I read the possibility of him coming back with a new drama. 🤗🤗🤗

This premise sounds a lot like Jang Geun Suk's upcoming SBS drama.

I have always wanted him to play a prosecutor except am not too happy over the "gangster lawyer" thing. Sigh...it really is hard for him to break free from that image and keeps getting offered that kind of role.

But Lee Jun Ki is good no matter how bad the drama is. Anyway, who is the writer of this drama?

And thank you, tvN! Not only do I get to see Shin Dong-wook in LIVE following HWAYUGI, but I now have the prospect of Lee Joon-gi back on my screen. I hope that LAWLESS ATTORNEY is as gripping and well-paced as TWO WEEKS. Writer-nim, please hold the serial killers, okay?

The lawyer equivalent of YONG-PAL comes to mind. I'm still trying to figure out how they'll stage an epic car chase in the courtroom. Har!

As for revenge dramas, Jang Hyuk was great as the most recent avenging lawless lawyer, Kang Pil-soo, in MONEY FLOWER. He used his fists as well as the law. If he accepts the offer, LJG will also be in good company with Prosecutor Jang Do-han in LOOKOUT, and vengeful attorney Oh Seung-ha in THE LUCIFER / MAWANG.

A «former gangster turned lawyer on a revenge mission», just what I was expecting!!! Wow, awesome, wow,I cannot jump enough because I am excited.... ok, now those who (more or less) know me here will soon realise I am being cynical😒.
I mean, another legal drama???!!! Why koreans don't write stories based upon the life of normal people, men who work in computers, accounting, in a bank?! 😐Just regular clerks if they want to put them in an office, and give them a normal family, including nephews or nieces who are going through a rebel stage and a grandmother who is relatively healthy and then suddenly sick... You know, normal life. Oh no, because in every corner we are bound to meet lawyers or prosecutors who are fighting to bring justice in a corrupted country. 😂😂😂😂
I know they want to grab the public's attention, but all these plots are becoming boring and unreal to death. You cannot relate with heroes like that. Bring me back some See-he, Gang-doo and Kang-soo all together! 😍

Many weekend family drama are about normal people. They can be makjang, but family drama is the only genre that still picturing about ordinary people. They don't have the best writing, directing and can be under-budget, but I love that they are still about ordinary people. As long as you choose right, you will get a good one. Of course some can be over the top - with revenge plot and chaebol fights, but some are good. This is among the reasons why I always go back to family drama because somehow it feels more realistic.

Girl, I won't recommend those two to be honest. I found they were entertaining but they kinda messed up the legal parts as usual. But I love the idea to give more varieties about legal drama, instead of just the repetitive plot. Because.. not all lawyers are criminal lawyers.

I really loved Lee Yu-ri's character in Father is Strange who was a lawyer - despite of not being a legal drama, it managed to show different side of lawyer who applied her legal knowledge in daily life such as when she fights for her parents' rights as the tenants against the landlord, and when she also entered a contract with her husband and her in laws. I honestly could watch a 16 romcom with her as main character and see how her daily life as a lawyer.

Im not giving on on Lee Jun Ki as well, because the problem with television drama is that the script can change midway, or released in half-cooked condition, which turn them from goodie to crazy - especially for greatly anticipated dramas.

We have seen that happening to our beloved dramas, like W, Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Goblin, Big, Scholar who walks the night...

Like they (writers, PD) dont have concept, like they dont know the characters that well, and dont have certain endings in mind. It made us audience scratch our heads so much that we start to loose hair. It makes great talents (like LJK) suffer.

No more of this, please. Please, llease please, make a solid script! You have done it with many dramas (voice, because it's the first time, to name a few), it means it is possible.

Dont let us down anymore.

I dont want to watch LJK with crazy hair like the last time he was at Scholar who walks the night, or suffer brain loss like when he was in scarlet heart and criminal minds or something similar to that.

The female lead is offered to Seo Ye Ji.
Is she any good? At least I know she is not an idol.

OMG! Girl is freaking awesome! She was in Save Me that cult thriller on OCN and was actually pretty good in her character. In any case, she is way better than the actresses they usually pit against Lee Jun-ki. Moon Chae won being the exception, but seeing as how she didn't get to do anything with her character in Criminal Minds, I'm trying to forget she acted with him.

Yeah MCW is so forgettable in CM, such a disappoitnment.

Oh the lead in Save Me! She is good there. Ok now I am looking forward to this LJK drama hahaha.

What? What? What?

OMG....my prayer has been answered. Seo Ye Ji blew me away in "Save Me".

Lee Jun Ki and Seo Ye Ji would be a perfect combo. I answered to @Sera that my top pick is Seo Ye Ji and am so thankful if both of them really accept the offer.

I am excited. Yippie.

I was just thinking about her yesterday. And to know that she could possibily team up with Jun Ki really making me excited.

Seo Ye Ji is brilliant and impressed me in Save Me.

Please make this happen for me, Dear Drama gods.

Doesn't his character sound a bit like Ma Yi Deum? Lawless?

While I'm not fond of too much legal/courthouse stuff in dramas I do like the idea of working against the corrupt and powerful. I just want a great drama for LJK because I really, really like him.

I'm starting to feel like he's actively bad at picking scripts. I like him, but I'm wondering if the shows I've liked that he's in have been flukes. I really liked him in Arang and the Magistrate but I did have some quibbles with that show. He keeps picking shows that sound good but deliver poorly. Like he goes for the concept and then they give him trash writing and he does the best he can. I want him to get a good show with a good script, like a Goblin or a Hwayugi.

Is Goblin and Hwayugi even that good? Oh, Please 🤮. I would not want him doing those two crappy dramas either. Shows that are good are something like Tunnel or Save Me or even the slice of life drama like BTLIOF.

Excited. OK, I have to say Scarlet Heart and Criminal Minds were rocky for most parts but Lee Jun Ki's performances were largely good so with the premise set out above, I'll definitely watch for it. Lol another weekender and considering I'm already preparing to have Hwayugi withdrawal symptoms once that ends, it'll be good to have another series to look forward to. All these great dramas 2017-2018 are asking me a fan of tvN 😂
