Hey! What shows is everyone the most excited to see in the upcoming months? Are there any trailers that have made you really, really excited? Personally, Mr. Sunshine and Are You Human Too? are making me champ at the bit! I can't wait for their episodes to start airing!

A whole one month of waiting! Sigh. It’s okay, I can binge some Sohn Ye-jin movies in the meantime!

Can't help developing alittle bit high expectation. Since it's preproduced drama and from the princess man screen writers. Based on trailer, politic might be play an integral part of the plot it seems.

PD Ahn doesn't do mainstream romance so I honestly don't know what to expect but I know it's going to be good.

Crossing my fingers that "Are You Human" will live up to the expectation for the sake of the genre, the two leads and ours lol.

PD Ahn worked with Gong Seung-yeon in "Grapevine" and he was the one who encourages her to take the role in SFD which she did well in.
I hope they'll work together again.

I thought it was one of the best of the year. The case-of-the-weeks early on were better than the big bad later, but that's true of so many shows. The ending was an awkward pitch for a season 2, but by that time they had EARNED a season 2, so it wasn't a pathetic plea like what-was-that-other-show-I-don't-really-remember.

Nothing in the next cycle of shows really excites me, but that might be a good thing. I don't like having expectations. I had zero expectations for JBL and Misty, and I was pleasantly surprised. So I'm going into the upcoming months with an open mind and hoping to find something that hooks me.

Happy OT Friday~!

In preparation for my trip to Korea in the fall, I started reviewing Korean with the TalkToMeInKorean website. I breezed through Level 1 this week and hope to finish all 9 levels by mid-April then move onto more intermediate stuff. Meanwhile, I'll be watching a lot of Korean dramas and variety shows to get used to hearing Korean.

I'm both excited and sad for the new episodes of Hwayugi this weekend. The drama is going to be over soon, but that just means more rewatching. I heard that BoA will be the new "master" for Master in the House so I'm excited to see how the boys will act around her.

Finally, Black Panther was AMAZING. The storyline was great, main and side characters were all so memorable, complex villain who was a great foil to the main character, female characters who all got to shine, and gorgeous shots. Lupita also speaks Korean in the movie and it's pretty good? I was surprised, I thought they would just put subtitles. I highly recommend seeing it. I'm not a big fan of the whole Marvel franchise and find a lot of their movies just okay, but Black Panther has the extra layer of depth that I find lacking and it's great to see such awesome representation. :)

The shots in Busan and the fight scene were so pretty and cool! I watched a video from Vanity Fair of the director, Ryan Coogler, breaking down the fight scene in the bar/casino. He went into detail how T'Challa, Nakia, and Okoye were positioned, their fighting styles, and even the clothes they wore represented deeper meanings to the movie. So much work went into this movie and it shows. <3

It has been the #1 movie in Korea since release.

1

Required fields are marked *

Yeah I was surprised at Lupita actually speaking Korean in Black Panther!

And she's actually good at it, obviously her pronunciation is foreign but the way she spoke made it sound like it was a language she/Nakia speaks fluently (with an accent but still fluent) and not just lines read off a script. And Okoye during that fight ♡♡♡♡

I'm so happy it's doing so well, I think this is going to gross a billion dollars and totally destroy all the old 'diversity doesn't make money' arguments in Hollywood.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I could understand her Korean well which was so cool. And it wasn't just one word or a sentence. I really appreciated that extra effort. :)

YES. I really hope this paves the way for more diverse casts and movies. Ava DuVernay directed A Wrinkle in Time and she played a big role in making the cast diverse as well. And I'm also looking forward to Crazy Rich Asians later this summer.

It must have been difficult but I really appreciate that she tried, it's not easy to speak naturally in a language you don't really know.

"Black Panther" is definitely going to beat "The Avengers" and become the #1 superhero movie of all times.
Disney won't care since they are both from their studio.
I also think it'll surpass billion dollars worldwide but not domestic.

I think "Rogue One" proved already that diversity does make money in Hollywood.

4

reply

Required fields are marked *

Not even The Force Awakens passed 1 billion domestic, but 500 million will be incredible as a US/NA gross for BP (all films that grossed 200million+opening have got over 600 million domesti so it probably gets that too) and of course it will be the first ever first instalment of a superhero movie to make 1 billion worldwide. People have been waiting for this a long time, it only had to be somewhat decent to make money but it's actually good, that helps (I didn't like Wonder Woman but I can still see why it succeeded).

And yes, Rogue One was really good. I couldn't believe I'm seeing Donnie Yen and Diego Luna in a Star Wars movie, just...wow. Also I really liked Felicity Jones who played Jyn, I'm glad it put an end to the idea that action blockbusters with a woman's face most prominent on the poster don't succeed (at least I hope.... since they never learned that lesson after Alien, all those Angelina Jolie movies, and Kill Bill).

1
1

Required fields are marked *

"Panther" will need over 600k domestic to beat "The Avengers."
"Force Awakening" almost made 1 billion domestic. Total worldwide was over 2 billion.

"Rogue One" was the most diverse film I've seen.
Lucas built this star wars universe filled with mostly white people until "Rogue One" came along.
"Rogue One" not only have a diverse cast but the main character was a woman.

I'm not a star wars geek but "Rogue One" is easily one of my favorite.

1

According to Wikipedia, Lupita speaks four languages: Spanish, Luo, English, and Swahili. I can't think of another movie where an actor said lines in English, Korean, and isiXhosa! At least her pronouciation was better than Bradley Cooper's terrible Mandarin at the end of Limitless.

By the end of the movie, most Nigerians present at the cinema, (we were a LOT) agreed Mbaku had to be Nigerian 😂😂. My only disappointment was that I didn’t get to see much of wakanda’s civilization. They just showed us the same sceneries.

@sancheezy and everyone else - Marmalade Boy's trailer is released.
Kakegurui getting 2nd season. Bleach's trailer is released.
FullMetal Alchemist Live-Action is timepass and many issues.

Kakegurui making waves. I'm raising the rating to all time high 9 for any show. Inflating it for short while and then bring it down to 7-7.5.

Fugitiva Boys aka Bokutachi ga Yarimashita - Found bad translations. still went ahead and watched episodes. Its one heck of a ride. Based on manga as usual.

How many can relate to episode 5th's "sending wrong message" incident?

Last week we were talking about food. I will keep that discussion alive. Rice(completely meshed up), Fish, Chiken, Kimchi, Beef or many other food options aren't side dishes. How can electricity consuming Microwave bring back chemical coated stored-packaged foods taste to Light?

As for huge amount of food being stored in refrigertor - That is mostly done by Your-Typical-korean-mother for her children. So all that food that will be kept in storage for several days doesn't bode well with me at all.

Hi Everyone! As always, I hope you are all doing well!

This week:

Radio Romance - I hope it has occurred to stepmom's spy to actually spy on Jason. We still don't have the complete story of what Jason's up to.

Money Flower - Pil-joo's reveal to Boo-cheon's mom in episode 20! Omo!!

Misty - As much as I love this show, due to real-life schedule, I'm already behind! *sadface* ..... I still have to watch episodes 5 and 6!

Victoria (Season 2) - This week it was ailments all around at Buckingham Palace! One the Queen's children falls ill with a terrible fever after playing in a drafty room. Her father, Prince Albert had advised everyone against open windows, but no one listened. Everyone was weepy around the child's bed until the fever broke. ..... In another development, the Queen's brother-in-law has a recurrence of what may or may not be an ailment, of the sexually-transmitted type, and this happens to him just as the woman he's always really loved (she's one of the Queen's ladies in the palace) is recently widowed and has always shown an interest in him. He wanted to take things to another level in their relationship, but well, you know.

Olympics - Watched a bit of skiing and a bit of ice skating. How cute are the Shibutani siblings?! ..... Heard about the South Korean Women's curling team. Way to go!

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

OT week 55. TGIF, dear Beanies! Quick OT today, because I was feeling magnanimous yesterday and added a new patient to my schedule, so it’s a bit tight. However, I did want to stop in and say hi!

Watched this week:
Hwayugi—still not invested emotionally, but that’s ok. I won’t be sad when it’s over.

Radio Romance—Doo Joon is still killing me softly…with his eyes.

Healer—OMG, where have you been all my life?!!! To think that this wasn’t even on my watch list is a crime in and of itself. Forget all the crimes that Healer is involved with. My husband probably said, “She’s adorable” a million times in the first and second episodes, and we’re on the 3rd now. I’m so invested in how all the time-lines are related and I know it was well-done, so ready to be sucked in fully and apologetically. (And this is one the hubby picked, so when he does that, I’m obliged to watch as well!)

Conversation in the car about my recent step into kpop:

Me (to hubby as Highlight’s “Curious” comes on): Oh, hey, did you know our “everyman” Doo joon sings? This is him--*listens to the first 8 bars*

Hubby: So the Tom Hanks of can sing too? (Because that’s what my hubby thinks of him, charismatic and affable, but not overly attractive.)

Me: It’s such a sexy song about being “curious” about the girl you like, wondering what she’s doing, how she’s doing it.

Hubby: So it’s a stalker song. Because those are sexy… *rolls eyes*

Me: The way Doo-joon breathlessly sings this makes it way sexier though. *sigh* And stalker songs are sexy, just depends on who the stalker is.

Hubby: *ROLLS EYES*

Me: Seriously, honey, stop doing that, you’re ruining the mood.

Moral of the story: Doo-joon can stalk me any day of the week. XD

Second Moral: So can Healer. XD XD

Third Moral: I almost forgot, Free the Kimchi meeting this weekend, so Gong Yoo is on my plate and we’re watching episode 13—the climax of the story! I can’t wait to share this with everyone I love! XD XD XD

I coined the term "stalker cute" back in highschool to describe this phenomenon. Specifically, it means that actions are seen differently depending on who performs them. Most male leads do a lot of stalker actions, *cough cough Healer* that if they were done by someone who was unattractive or whom we didn't ship with the female lead, we would be calling the police.
It's similar with girls, depending on how you feel towards the woman her actions will be seen as clingy/annoying or cute/endearing.

I came up with it when overanalyzing Mr. Darcy, and find it relates to nearly every drama lead as well. ^_^

My husband totally stalked me: looked up all my information on the internet and called me because my stupid med school had all that information on their website, knew exactly where I lived, who my roommate was, what classes I had, who my parents were, figured out who I was dating at the time, and totally looked him up too (and said, "I could totally take this guy"). It was really truly scary, and if he wasn't such a great guy, I probably would be dead now. You can't get all that information now without really working for it, but back then, it was so easy to find out anything you wanted. And another reason I don't use my real name anywhere on social media.

He didn't tell me where he got all his information initially (and he did go to my administration and made a big to-do about the fact all my information was out there for the world to see after he did all that--he was at another medical school which was much more IT savvy apparently and took steps to secure their students' information). And yeah! I didn't even think about that until you mentioned it, *rolling my own eyes*, he has no right to make fun of my song choices! But really, "Curious" is a sexy song. I'm a bit obsessed about it right now.

@ally-le I always find it funny when the half of a couple makes fun of the taste of the other half. It's like, "but that person likes you, so if you say their taste is bad...?"

Under the Misty Open Thread post people were suggesting adding a tab or button to the top of the home page.

But what they need is the "subscribe" button. The one that lets you pay to have a guilt-free / ad-free DB experience without using an ad-blocker. The one that lets you cut out the middleman and support DB without waiting over a month for shipping.

A lot of websites are doing that now, although none that I care about as much as Dramabeans.

So, what are we watching?

My Golden Life - Should have been over, not over, please wrap up my 49 hours of life wasted nicely. Seriously though, I am curious as to how the writers are going to use these last three hours to create a happy ending that is true to the characters. My biggest disappointment is not enough time spent on the Cinderella romance.

Odyssey/Hwayugi - This feels more plot driven than character driven, so I am still super curious as to what is going to happen next, but not as emotionally invested in the characters as I would normally be. My biggest regret is that not enough time was spent with the Pig/Zombie romance.

Waikiki - A surprisingly funny and sweet show. After struggling with the first couple of episodes, I am now all in. This is a hidden gem of a show and Lee Yi-Kyung is showing a true gift for comedy.

Should we kiss first is off to a good start although I fear that it is going to be predictable. I will wait and see.

If I muster courage to watch it, I’ll let you know ha! So you like Goblin most of all his works? Were you his fan before Goblin?

1

During the Olympics there was a feature on the French ice dancing pair, who train in Montreal. They were sort of dancing around the streets and talking about how much they love it there, I thought of you Ally. It looked just like the place with the Christmas store.

1

Goblin was the first thing I ever saw him in. And it was my love affair with Goblin that started my love affair with the open thread actually. And although there were kdramas I saw prior to Goblin, it was the quality of acting (in no small part because of Gong Yoo) and the production value of that drama that impressed me so much. I’ve documented how it literally changed my life here on Dramabeans. After that, then I started watching all his other works, at least those that I felt would be good. There are ones that I’ve passed up because I like him so much now where he is, that I can’t and don’t want to imagine him in a younger role.

1

@ally-le
Wow, that’s interesting! I’d like to read your posts about Goblin 😊 What # of Open Thread is it?

I have to say Goblin isn’t my most favourite drama, there were other dramas that pulled my heart more, but the reason why I keep rewatching some scenes apart from GY is breathtaking cinematography. I just can’t help but admire work of the Goblin staff. You’re right, there aren’t any dramas who can compare to Goblin when it comes to production value (maybe upcoming Mr Sunshine?).

The “First Love” scene in Quebec is probably the most stunning scene I’ve ever watched in k-dramas. The setting, costumes, colours, acting, poem and background instrumental music made this scene unforgettable for me.

2

So, I think 90% of everything I’ve posted on the OT is about Goblin starting from about last February! Lol! But I do have a blog about it: https://freethekimchi.wordpress.com/2017/10/26/our-goblin-anthony-bourdain-tour-of-quebec-canada/
which is why bbstl is reminded of me when talking about Montreal, and there was this piece I wrote for one of the monthly writing themes: http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/09/music-and-dramas-how-dramas-brought-me-back-to-my-first-love/
If they ever ask for one for best cinematography, you know I’ll write one for Goblin as well and analyze that “physics of love” scene you mentioned. It’s one of my favorites too!

One Fine Day is pretty darn bad! 😬 I say that as a big Gong Yoo fan, no way I'd consider rewatching it. Ooooh, it's a stinker. Nam Goongmin is good in it, though! You really can't figure out why Sung Yuri (who hasn't learned to act yet, btw) doesn't get her head on straight and go with him.

Is GY bad or drama itself is bad? It can’t be worse than Big?

I haven't seen Big. One Fine Day is dated and kind of crazy melo, just not a good drama in the first place and all the stars are very green. I think Gong Yoo was fine but I was watching him with stars in my eyes, I'm sure ☺️ He had kind of a bad shag haircut, if that sways your feelings 😂

Big was a disaster but GY still delivered awesome performance, he was the only reason to watch tbh. Not to mention his physique was at peak at that time.

I watched him in Biscuit Teacher and he was oh so green there too! How did he go from OFD to phenomenal performance in Coffee Prince?

1

I tried to watch this back when I was desperately 'waiting' for GYO to come back from the army, and...no. Trust me, it is worse than Big!

Haha, you guys are funny! Reading your comments makes me lose confidence to watch it. I wasn’t impressed with Biscuit Teacher either, ot felt really dated to me. He truly hit a jackpot with Coffee Prince after One Fine Day, right?

1

I will definitely trust you and I will not give Big a chance!

1

Ok, just stepping back in to note that OFD is verrrrrry good in the Gong Yoo physique category, I'm not gonna lie. Maybe there are some YT videos out there for you to watch instead of the whole show? Gah, there's a whole stepbrother part that is completely bonkers that you want to avoid although the stepbrother is super cute.

Also, all this talk about GY’s physique makes me want to remind you that the body he had 10 years ago has NOTHING on his body now. https://pin.it/qggipdllrztx5q

OMO YIP !!! Boy, was that fun 😁 Thanks, Ally 😍

I think his peak physique was post army around 2010-2012.

https://postimg.org/gallery/dyjmreiu/

I think he said it in 2016 that his build isn’t what it used to be. I think it gets harder to keep in shape with age.

1

I considered watching One Fine Day after watching Coffee Prince. Then I saw the score JB gave it and quickly decided against it, LOL.

I will watch a mediocre drama for an actor I like, but not one that people say is really bad. Sorry, Gong Yoo!

Also, I just want you to know that I giggle every time I see your icon. What a picture. Poor Jo In-sung. 😂

I came here hoping to find one person to tell me OFD wasn’t THAT bad, but reading all your comments makes me think twice. Maybe I shouldn’t ruin my perception of him by watching OFD, right? Aisling out on this one 😂

@bbstl
Thanks for the link! That was indeed pretty bad hair ha! I can’t believe trends changed so much in 10 years. GY is one of those men who age beautifully. He’s more charming and handsome now than in his 20s.

2

I started IFD during a Gong Yoo binge, and not even for him could I make it through. Same with Big. Good premise wasted on horrible writing.

He is much better at choosing film projects than dramas. He even made me enjoy a zombie movie, and I am usually bored with zombies or turned off by gratuitous gore.

I clenched my teeth and finished Big though I had to skip all scenes where he wasn’t in. Few last episodes really tested my patience though.

His films tend to be more serious and I think that’s where he’s heading in his career. I don’t think we will see him in a drama for another 5 years 😭

Don’t you guys have a feeling that Goblin was GY’s last romantic drama? After a huge Train to Busan success it seems like he’s not going to dramaland any time soon. From what I understand is that dramas are more popular, but films are where actors get acknowledged by critics. That’s why I think he’s going to shoot films for awhile and who knows when he’ll pick drama again. Let’s say, he’d do another drama in 2021, he’ll be 42 by then. At that age, it’s not common to star in a romantic drama anymore, right? As a fan service I’d like to see him do at least one sweeping romance before he turns 50 😀🤫

I honestly thought he wouldn't do any more dramas after Coffee Prince...and then after Big...and then after Goblin lol so I'm hoping he proves me wrong once again!
There are some dramas with heroes in their 40s, plus it's Gong Yoo oppa, so I wouldn't really worry about the age thing. I'd worry about him wanting to take on one of those roles again and being on the spotlight once more!

He’s always been a reluctant fan favorite, I feel. If he could direct or produce, I think he would be happier a little more out of the lime-light. Fame is such a double-edged sword. I’d love to see another drama from him, but not holding my breath either. He’s still so damn popular and in such amazing shape that I’m sure he could headline any drama for the next 12 years, easily.

Thoughts on Should We Kiss First?
I cannot believe that I have added a fourth currently running show to my list! I am liking it so far. Lots of favourite actors, with Kim Sun-ah topping the list. I wish she'd exercise her funny bones a bit more, but not sure if this drama will allow that. I will take what I can get!

That 'back seduction' scene was really funny.

LOL yes, that seduction scene was so ridiculous. (I really the actor who is playing her friend too.) Also, the bit where she calls Son Moo-Han and then pretends to talk to herself ... while (not) having hung up.
Their machinations are a little on the nose. But, I guess she is in a desperate situation.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to post and say how much I appreciate being a part of the DB community ~ the last few months have been really difficult for me in the real world, and to have this space to come to and just fangirl and rant and overanalyze and be honest, about my love for oppas and other feelings, in a way I can't be on other social media platforms has meant so much to me.

Y'all are such a supportive community, I don't know what I'd do without you. ^_^ Saranghae Beanies! <3

Also, I hope things pick up for you in the real world, soon. *aims best wishes your direction*

Lows: I'm not really enjoying kdramas these days :( and i think it is partly because I am in a downward spiral and stressed everyday. I never realized how demanding it is to be a college student and work. I honestly have no free time, I barely see my friends and I'd rather sleep than watch anything.

Highs: I've been marathoning Charmed and I've fallen in love with the show all over again. Next up to binge is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. OMG I SAW BLACK PANTHER THIS WEEK!!! As a person of African descent it was heartwarming was to see my culture portrayed in a positive light. Not only that, but seeing dark skinned women portrayed as smart, strong and brave brought tears to my eyes. And as a result I cried at the end of the movie. Representation is so important and I'm glad we're finally getting it. ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿

Yes to everything you said about Black Panther. I'm thrilled and proud by how culturally relevant it's become. I can't recall the last time I saw so many media outlets writing cultural impact stories about the same film.

If you haven't read them, I recommend reading the Black Panther-related posts by Damon Young and Panama Jackson's pieces at Very Smart Brothas. They'll have you cackling.

I think my interest for kdrama has been declining for the last two months. I'm just tired after watching too many dramas last year. After JBL I only watch Misty and haven't plan to watch anything at the moment.

It's called the Slump? I haven't really watched anything except the 8 episode White Christmas in about four months now.

But I think its natural. When I started watching dramas, I was Watching like crazy - but I had all the content subbed and uploaded from the start of subbing years to 2016 to choose from. I dropped a lot of dramas then too, but there was such a large variety of choices that there was always something to watch. After about six months, I started working full - time, and love watching along with watching older shows, until I reached a point where now my only choices are the presently airing shows - which is a miniscule amount. By now I've read how most of the finished shows go and if I haven't seen it, its because the show doesn't interest me.

But yeah, its also possible to lose interest, I guess. I watched Japanese dramas for about four months then just stopped.

Yes, I think it's slump. I was excited when I found that I don't need to download or borrow my friend's DVD to watch kdrama. It's on my phone brought by streaming service.
It's a shame since 2018 is the year of veteran actors making comeback. After Misty finished I'm just going to wait for Mr. Sunshine. I'm rooting for you KES. Please let me finish your drama this time.

GOOD MORNING! I hope everyone is having a fabulous Friday and had a fabulous week.

Just Between Lovers Finished this and it was such a beautiful and well crafted drama. I really liked Junho in Chief Kim but now I'm in love with him. He did such an excellent job in this drama. I kept putting off the last 2 episodes because I knew bad things were going to happen and my poor baby had been through so much that I didn't want to see it happen. But I finally watched them and after some tears and intense worry I was happy with the ending.

Hwayugi Started this while putting off finishing JBL. The story is fun and different and I like all the actors but a lot of the effects and CG can be REALLY cringy and constantly throws me out of what is supposed to be a serious or heartfelt moment. I'll keep watching this for the unique story and the actors and to see the selfish Son Oh-gong fall for the girl (actually fall, not being forced to by the bracelet). Just wish it wasn't quite so campy.

Morning Beanies,

I need to catch up this week episodes of Radio Romance and Waihoo Waikiki. NIF2 I am on episode 19. I must say. I think this where it is getting boring and must be a filler episode. Also, someone please explain to me why is there so much screen time of that one high priest. Also, does he ever show emotions at all.

In real life, I am so busy with my three kids. I really need grown up time and wine. Unfortunately, everyone is busy this week. LOL Oh well... I hope everyone have a wonderful weekend.

@kudoran, I sympathize with your situation and I'm glad it's over. What a nightmare! Believe me, when you're an adult, nothing is worse than toxic office work culture and environment (I'm aware there are things that are far more worst) but let's focus on this issue. I'm sure many of us can relate, me included. And yes some of your experiences sort of a dejavu to me, those stubborn workers that didn't follow the rules, that diva that demanded everything to her liking, ignorant manager that never listened to us, a demand to do tasks that are out of our jobscope and I wonder why management always hide/ avoid the real issue when it's easy to just come clean and resolve it.

I hope you don't have a long-term trauma and I hope your job later (or your current job) is okay and will make you at peace.
