Premiere Watch: Poetry, Switch, Pretty Noona

We have a diverse set of premieres this week: a medical slice-of-life drama, a legal drama posing as a crime caper (or is it a crime caper posing as a legal drama?), and the noona romance that’s brought Sohn Ye-jin back to the small screen.

You Who Forgot Poetry

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Medical human drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This is the new lighthearted slice-of-life drama from the writer of Drinking Solo and the crew behind the long-running workplace comedy series Rude Miss Young-ae. It’s set in a hospital, but unlike every other medical drama about surgeons or ER doctors, this story focuses on the support staff that usually takes a backseat in other dramas, like nurses, lab technicians, and physical therapists.

It’s a coming-of-age story centered around struggling youths, much like Drinking Solo was, but this one will have a framing device—a poem in each episode that’ll represent their struggles thematically, and bring them healing along the way. The ensemble cast includes Lee Yubi, Lee Jun-hyuk, and rising young actors Jang Dong-yoon and Shin Jae-ha; and while I’m not expecting the same hilarity we got from the Noryangjin idiot trio in Drinking Solo, I do expect relatable foibles and genuine laughs from them, and a chance to highlight some of the unsung heroes in the medical field.

Switch: Change the World

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Legal drama, crime caper
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours total)

Reasons to watch: Jang Geun-seok is back in a two-for-one role as a geeeeenius con artist and a law-abiding prosecutor in this undercover caper about using any means necessary to get justice. It’s definitely attempting to be another Police Unit 38, where officers of the law get in cahoots with bad guys to catch the even badder guys, and this time we have a convenient set of doppelgangers on either side of the law.

When the prosecutor gets attacked and put in a coma, his partner (played by Han Ye-ri) enlists the con artist who looks just like him to take his place and go undercover as a prosecutor. Also conveniently (I know, there are a lot of convenientlys in this premise), the con artist has studied for the bar exam and knows the ins and outs of legal procedure. Of course he does. But if you’ve managed to suspend your disbelief up to this point, you’ll be in for mistaken identity hijinks galore, and Jang Geun-seok having a blast in the dual role.

Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Romance melodrama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Up-and-coming leading man Jung Hae-in romancing pretty noona Sohn Ye-jin? What’s not to love about this setup? There’s almost nothing else to the premise—it’s literally just a love story between an older woman and a younger man—but in the hands of star PD Ahn Pan-seok (Secret Love Affair, Heard It Through the Grapevine) I expect an intricate, melodramatic journey made up of subtle nuance and dense emotion.

Sohn Ye-jin plays a manager at a coffee company who grew up in a happy, average middle class home with loving parents and a little brother. Jung Hae-in is her little brother’s best friend and she’s his older sister’s best friend, so he was always around her whole life and practically part of their family. He goes abroad for a few years to start his career as a 3D graphic artist and comes back a successful young man… and is shocked when the noona he grew up with suddenly looks pretty to him. Be still my heart.

Maybe me. Lol. I have stable job which is my dream job (although I'm not rich and hate those office politics), I watch at least 4 dramas per week or binge watching one drama + several movies, take my family to hang out once in a while, hang out with bff at least once a week, cooks healthy foods twice or three times a week. Though there are times when work demands me to spend 24/7 dedicated to it.
But I seldom leave comment in DB.

I am done with my studies I don't have to work. I'm not married. So luckily I can watch dramas all day. But trust me having too much free time it is hard to find good shows and all end up looking the same. I can watch dramas all day if I want but it just gets boring after a while and you end up reading more synopses trying to find good shows instead of actually watching them LOL.

I have a great idea for a pharmacy drama. (My sister is a pharmacist who met her husband who was a pharmacy tech under her at work—best part is they knew each other in high school! If that doesn’t have kdrama written all over it, I don’t know what does! Lol. Free idea for anyone who wants it. Seriously, throw in some unconsenting family members who fly cross county to stop the wedding because they thought her marrying a divorcee with two kids was “beneath her and the family honor, then you would have a melodrama/rom com for the ages. Oh, wait, that actually happened. 🤭

And that’s another drama that just wrote itself. LOL!🤣

13

Ok, going back to my real work now...

3

I'm loving how the rom-com sequel becomes a crime drama, or maybe a revenge drama with your husband Gong Yoo avenging your murder. You can show up as a ghost, but I'm sure someone (**cough**me?**) can stumble their way into helping him.

I would have to be a Noona Romance too. With cute kids to play the step children. And aunts, uncles and cousins who have never been on a plane, but get on one to save our heroine from certain dishonor! It would have a huge cast. Cuz my dad has 8 brothers and sisters and all their families, and a matriarch halmoni who runs the show. GO!

9

I’m just realizing that I might actually live in a kdrama...

9

I don’t know about other cast members, but Gong Yoo would definitely play my husband—the unofficial family mediator. 😍 Ok, if this idea isn’t stolen before I retire, I’m writing a book, then screenplay, movie, then remake it into a kdrama, in that order.

9

@ally-le LOL dude claim the storyline as yours, add a bit more and viola'! You can sell the original and it's sequel to a broadcasting station.

LOL! Ally, you know some hilarious people and situations! I wish I could meet your sister.
Mine married a carpenter younger than her, and although he was hot (according to her), he ended up being a loser with a bad personality, some inferiority complex and no money. She is now divorced with a 7 year old little monster and will migrate to another country to start over because Venezuela is in bankruptcy 😒
I love my sister, but no, her life and her own noona romance wouldn't make it into a k drama... no no no 😂😂

4
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

It could totally become a K-Drama!! When she migrates to another country she'll have a run in with some mysterious handsome dude who is cold to her but interacts warmly with her "little monster" lol. Aaand on it goes from there. (and if you want you can add some resistance from the guys family in for him being attracted to a woman with a child hahaha)

5

LOL!!! 😂 Ohh @naelap, my sister says she doesn't want to have any other man in her life because she regrets so much, and she is pretty and has a good body looks. Now as an immigrant with a child and so much pride and a broken marriage behind, that would turn into a Melo if she ever gets to find mister perfect guy. His family will oppose, of course, but he will have some weakness that only she can help him to overcome, and maybe after one liter of tears, we can have a happy end??🙄
😂😂

2

@javinne YUPP tell your sister she's right, she doesn't need a man because she's enough! Men just make you end up questioning all your life decisions LOL.
It totally would turn into a melo, because the ex-husband would come back wanting to re-enter their life again because he's changed, even though his mother thinks he got the better end of the deal and she hates his wife. HAHAHA, of course, the hero always has to have a problem which can only be solved with the help of his one true love.

1

Lol! We’re really pretty boring, but I could probably write a kdrama about every relationship I’ve personally seen. I’ve got lots of friends and family members to glean from! I think your sister has a kdrama plot in her future as Naela Patel imagines! Her “little monster” will probably be the match-maker, trying to find himself a new dad and his mother a new husband. Asking random people on the street and in cafes if they think his mom is pretty and meets a barista in a coffee shop who gives him free hot chocolate with whipped cream and a side of chivalry because he’s adorable, while your sister gets a double expresso. And he’s impressed because he’s really a chaebol working in one of his family’s franchises and sees your sister dressed to the nines while corralling a 7 year old with grace. And he says to the son, “I think your mother is very pretty,” and gives her an extra shot of expresso with a napkin with his number on it and the rest is kdrama history.

4

Oh yes, @ally-le! My sister's story and probably yours, would make a decent slice of life drama, nothing alike to candy girls and first loves, but with a pricky charming second love, which works pretty well, and can make normal people relate to it. Stepchildren as well. 😉
Hey! If you are in the Midwest, isn't it past midnight already?? Go to sleep, girl!! You need to store energy for your workaholic tendencies and kdrama addiction on a premiere week! LOL!!! 😂😂
Me, I have to go to work. Here is 8:40am.
Bye bye... 🙋

1

Hi @justme. I don't know about an entire drama dedicated to pharmacists but there recently was a drama where one of the characters was a pharmacist and played an important part. That drama is Prison Playbook and the character Yoo Han-yang (Looney) was acted beautifully by Lee Kyu-hyung.

@javinne The definition is:
A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that is constructed using public wires — usually the Internet — to connect remote users or regional offices to a company's private, internal network.
Never mind that :-) Practically it means that you can get out of the inavailable area and watch whatever you want because the application works as if you have direct connection without barriers. Mostly used for security.

Hi @allly. I can never figure out what new series will be on DramaFever. They just suddenly appear. I just searched DF for Something in the Rain and get nothing.
Last night on DF I watched the final episode of Misty.
I loved it. When I removed Misty from my Watchlist there on the main screen was A Poem a Day Episode 1.
That is how I discovered DF has Poem.
Anyway I figured it is easier to start a series fresh than try to catch up so I watched episode 1. I generally like medical series and I enjoyed what I saw.
Over at Viki the folks there seem to think that Netflix has the rights to Pretty Noona.
This licensing business is all a mystery to me.

Required fields are marked *

I also wonder if they have it in Netflix... I honestly doubt it. I have heard some movies or dramas appear on Netflix in the US, but ever though I have it here in Germany, those particular shows don't appear here. Like the movie "the beauty inside", to give you an example. So, I am not exactly trusting much Netflix anyways, regardless of what Netflix US may have to offer.
It may be this license thing. Europe must be really expensive for some of them.
And of course, most people here generally won't have such a good taste as to watch Korean dramas anyways 😂😂😂😂😂
In regard to entertainment, European culture is a mystery for me.

There you go, and me thinking like a fool I may even paid that subscription. Can someone inform me how dramafever really works?? When I was in south America I could search and watch almost anything. It was like the king or queen of kdramas available for free (with commercials, of course). When I came to Europe, due to licence, I cannot watch anything!
If I pay, I won't have commercials, like in Vikki, right?
But most likely the license-thing would keep on being an issue, wouldn't it??🙄

Yeah, even if you pay, you can hardly watch anything on Dramafever because of the licensing. There will be a great drama, you click on the first episode, and get that 'this content is not available in your region' regardless of whether you have a subscription or not.

Basically, you'll need VPN as well

"Pretty Noona" is here. I will definitely watch it, for pretty noona and her handsome boyfriend :)

And, jtbc keeps sending me notification of days counts to the premier with Hae-in smiling with a cup of coffee. HELP!, I'm already swooned! :)

Okay, I may have to break my "No medical dramas EVER" vow.

Lighthearted, slice of life, poetry, AND allied health professions??? Yes, yes, yes, and YES!!!

As a person who has worked in allied health for decades, I would love to see this. But if you show me one more overblown, ridiculously unbelievable medical situation, or even one upside-down oxygen mask, I'm outta there! You've been warned, "You Who Forgot Poetry"!

I didn’t see anything obviously amis this first episode, except for no gloves during cpr on a bloody patient, but that was 1 second and it literally flew by. I love that it focuses on PT’s and radiology techs. I think there’s a PT Beanie around (@mrsparkhaejin here?) to comment on accuracy there. It’s totally heart-warming and the poetry is on-point and the cinematography is romantic. Lovely opening overall.

Yeesh! I don't touch a patient without gloves anymore! (There's a long story there I won't go into!) But I'll try to ignore that scene and soldier on, if only for the radiology techs, since they're my peeps. Thanks for doing reconnaissance on this Ally!

There’s a SUPER ANNOYING radiology tech right now, and I’ve FF all his scenes. I don’t really understand the radiology tech scenes and where that story arc is going—I kind of got an idea with the previews to the 3rd episode, but still, I was bored with that line of story-telling. Now, Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome is another story-line that has my undivided attention. Lol.

I am watching episode 2 tonight. If Mr.TDH is Lee Joon-hyuk his character made a brief appearance at the end of episode 1. In Forest of Secrets (Stranger on Netflix) it appeared to me that he was cast against type as Prosecutor Seo Dong-jae. He gave a 5 star performance!

@marcusnyc20, I knew he looked familiar, but he looks like he’s aged about 10 years from FOS to fit this role. That’s pretty amazing. He was such a two-faced pretty thing in FOS. Impressive. I’m speechless.

I watched the teasers for Poem and yes, there's going to be a romance (a love triangle, I think).

I felt the second episode was really weak overall, and I really was turned off by the temper tantrum. I forgot about that handsome new guy and almost turned it off, then he appeared, and then I was curious again. Lol. Those poems are my crack though. I might just have to watch for them...they’re beautiful.

Hum... i actually didn't mind the tantrum, because he is what? 20, 21 years old? He is a baby!!!😂 I mean, no, he is not. But it didn't bother me because you realise how immature and spoiled he is (has been), and then there is room for growth in there. I suppose that is what the show wants to give us... some people grow slow, but they do.
Annoying characters? Yes, that is very true. This drama is not the best. But is an easy watch and those parts that make you cry, reflect or ponder about something serious in life, death, recovering from an illness, friendship... I think with the help of the poems, these parts will make the show worth watching.
Also the poems... the poems alone are really beautiful. I will end up wiring then all for myself.
I hope the show improves, but even if not and it keeps this tone from the premiere, it will be ok.
Give me more poems, show, and I will forget your imperfections!!!😀

Oh man you should have watched to the end because I think that temper tantrum made the beginning of his character growth so exciting. Although I must admit, if it wasn't Jang Dong Yoon playing Min Ho, I would have switched off since I agree that most of the side characters are kind of annoying atm and some characteristics were a bit repetitive towards the end of this week's episodes.

But like @ally-le and @javinne the poems are the main reason I'm enjoying it, plus the OST lyrics are like gold dust. I hope you stick it out with us.

So bad I don't have time to watch pretty noona (I'm not interested in the two other shows at all actually that "switch" photo up there looks hilarious ) I really wanted to see Jung Hae-In in a leading role, hopefully I'll binge watch it when I have the time , I'm super excited for it !!

GF forgot to mention this, but I'm making a special cameo in two dramas that are premiering soon:

as Jang Hyuk Oppa's First Love in Greasy Melo...whoa, almost typed GREEDY Melo there. I'm the reason he goes to prison.

as Park Hae jin Oppa's Backpack in Four Sons. I get to kiss his back.

So excited about my cameos. Wish me luck, guys.

Yes, it is...he sports long hair, dressed in black, rides a motorbike, and is a cool killer. Soompi came up with the article a few days ago. Don't worry if you can't see me in the pics. I prefer to keep a low profile.

LMAO!
This almost makes me want to check out both the shows! Though I like the idea of you as backpack than as the first love. Backpacks are more important you see :D

It's gruelling being a backpack. I don't talk, but I endure a lot...there is a dramatic moment where Oppa sits on me and I go SQUASHHHH as the air gets sucked out of me by Oppa's butt. They didn't even get me a stunt double!!
