Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

girlfriday

My Ajusshi: Well now I know why they cast The Voice—the heroine listens in on his life night and day! Episode 4 finally delivered that moment where I felt like it paid off to sit through the first three episodes of slow burn. I was just waiting for that tiny jolt of a true connection, promising that this wouldn’t be a show about two characters who hated each other for sixteen episodes. But now the heroine’s armor has begun to crack, and the ajusshi has begun to wake up after sleepwalking through his entire life, and that’s exciting.

The Great Seducer: Did we arrive at this conflict point too early? It seems too fast for some reason, or maybe teen relationships move at the speed of light and I’m out of touch. But I kind of feel like the breakup happened before the relationship started. Let’s give things a chance to build before crushing them with repressed emotion, shall we?

Mystery Queen 2: The procedural cases are really lackluster this season. They’re not holding my interest as much, and the jokes are veering more hokey than witty, which is a distinct step down from the first season. It’s mostly a directorial issue, but the writer also seems to have decided to make the cop a little dumber, rather than making the cases smarter. I love this crime-fighting duo, but can we please get them more interesting crimes to fight?

chickachunga

My Ajusshi: I haven’t seen all the episodes yet, but here’s how I feel about it so far : [chickachunga kissing her fingers gesture] Gorgeous direction by Kim Won-seok per usual. Keeping my fingers crossed for the story to not meet the same fate as Oh Hae-young Again and fall apart in the second half.

My Husband Oh Jak-doo I know some people find the mountain grannies too screechy, but I love them for being such cute matchmakers this week. And I enjoyed that scene in the coffee shop where Jak-doo proudly orders cappuccino for them. But I love it best when someone schools the horrible mom, and it was so satisfying to watch the youngest granny pull her hair a couple of times. I’m not buying that mom’s reason for treating her daughter like a worthless walking wallet. She just seems like a horrible mom, period. If Seung-joo didn’t do That Big Mistake in the past, Mom would be treating her like a precious walking wallet, but a wallet all the same.

Tale of a Good Witch I’m sad to say goodbye to Woo-jin’s “Abstinence Blue” outfits, but he’s hilariously sweet when he’s trying to understand and help out the girl he likes, even if he found her sharpening a cleaver “for triceps exercise” at midnight. Maybe growing up with Oh Tae-ri made him calm in terrifying situations, because she’s the cruelest chaebol heiress I’ve seen in dramaland. Seriously, she terrifies me. *watches clips of Yoon Se-ah in Just Between Lovers to sleep better at night*

abirdword

The Great Seducer: I was worried about the pacing as the show’s first few episodes just flew through the source material, and now that they need to buy time, it feels like the writers are using a random trope generator to build scenes until they’re ready to go for the conclusion. But then there’s moments like the the tense dinner scene at Shi-hyun’s family vacation home, and I’m all in again.

My Ajusshi: I'm not sure how I feel about this drama. It's very bleak and slow. I've been struggling to care about the characters and office politics; Episode 4 gave me just enough insight into Ji-an and fight from Dong-hoon to keep me watching, I think.

Should We Kiss First: I'm glad everything is out in the open now, and I just hope it doesn't lose the humor that drew me to the show in the first place.

My Husband Oh Jak Doo: I'm a sucker for contract relationships, what can I say.

I'm disappointed in Shall We Live Together. I miss Father is Strange.

Do you understand Chinese? The Chinese drama streaming sites already have the episodes subbed.

I figured you meant English subs but thought I'd suggest the Chinese sites in case you're multi-lingual. Can't help you with the English subs issue. None of the sites I know of have the subbed eps of Pretty Noona.

Sorry, where do u watch it?

@June I found it on chinaq.tv

Another thing you can try is type 经常请吃饭的漂亮姐姐第1集 into Google's search engine and look under the Videos tab and see what comes up.

I totally forgot about OCN's CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD airing on Sat/Sun. I remember that one of the original cast was replaced because of sexual harassment allegations. I like OCN's gritty dramas so I might catch up on this rather than start SWITCH.
Have any beanies been following CHILDREN? ANY comments?

I've only watched ep1, it was good, I was very intrigued. But sadly, there seems to be no eng subs for ep2 and above, so I just stop watching, and wait until there's sub. I've sent a request to Netflix to air Children, so, keep hoping.

I wish I understood Korean hahaha then I could watch the raw eps! I was at a loss too.. but someone mentioned in the OT or What We're Watching threads here that they're on the Chinese streaming sites.. the not so legal ones.. So I gave up on the English sites and started looking at Chinese platforms.

How lucky! Hahaha I should just learn Korean then, since the Chinese streams sites wouldn't be of any help to me. ^^

Personally I am enjoying GREAT SEDUCER.... yeah, migth be (mainly) because of WDH, but I do like the rest of the trio (SooJi and SeJoo), although I can understand why there could a hate-love relationship, especially towards SooJi... the three of them had a HUGE family history, not that I am trying to justify their actions, it's just that it should be taken into consideration when judging them too. Same goes for TaeHee and Kyung Joo and their parents. All of their parents. It's like a web of lies, misunderstandings, misscomunication and (bad) luck. I guess. But so far, so good. I am really looking forward to Mondays and Tuesdays because of this show. That's the effect the drama is having on me. Starting to like Mondays.

Also trying not to drop That man Oh Soo, but sometimes I feel like I should. I don't know, I am not that invested on that drama, but not that bad to drop it. And loving so far SWITCH. But that's probably because I love a good drama or film with interesting characters and a team of con artists (btw to me the best con artist ever is Kim Woo Bin in both films, The technicians and Master, he was intense on the last one) but kudos to WDH on his previous drama Mad Dog (although not technically a con artists drama, there are some elements that could fall into that category, don't you think? also, can't he still speak German in the great seducer? haha)

I dropped That Man Oh Soo. Just offering my two cents. I think the easiest way to decide whether to drop it is to see if it makes you want to reach for the next episode.. You could spend that time on your next fav drama instead if you give up something that doesn't bring you joy.

The great seducer: I agree that the pace is a bit off same as the chemistry. I do not feel Joy's feelings at all (or just very little). They never started dating and now she breaks up with him? Plus she should have been way more hard to get after the pool scene. She seemed way to easy to convince. I get it that she feels like an outsider in their relationship and that he is not the usual boyfriend material but her reaction was too weird. The trio has more chemistry. Main lead is the focal point of interest for most of us I guess (lol)

I have registered just to comment how much I like first 10 episodes of My husband Mr Oh. It is soooo good to watch. Now that OST (spoiler alert) finally admitted their own feelings to each other, I’m dreading eventual complications we all know are coming. I just want them to live happily ever after and raise chickens and take care of grandmas. Too much to ask?

Well, I want them to have a happy life together but first I REALLY want them to talk to each other honestly! Why in the world did she not tell him about being attacked again?
Aughhh this is when kdramas drive me nuts with the lack of true talking about things.

But I'm in still in it for the long haul and still enjoying the show.

I actually don’t mind them not talking to each other in this case. She was legitimately missing him and would have gone to see him (or really wished to go) in any case. If she said she was attacked, our hero would (of course) drop everything to help her, but she didn’t want that. She wanted to be clear and upfront that she missed him because she liked him, not because she was afraid.
Thank you for the reply😺,it gives me chance to fall into the deep end of kdrama fandom. I really like this drama, just hope our main lady continue to be kickass firecracker.

*GRAND PRINCE: this drama is good!!! both YSY and JSW are superb...I like the story so far and it's different from QF7D... it also has this unexpected LOL moments which is why it's refreshing from the other sangueks that are more serious and dramatic kinda way,,, the cast are awesome except for the female lead... don't get me wrong, she's pretty but she lacks emotions when she's acting, good thing that her co-actors are all doing their jobs perfectly...

*TUNNEL: it's kinda late... but good thing i started watching it... still in episode 6, but it's gives you this satisfaction feeling every time I'm done with 1 episode .... i love it

*GREAT SEDUCER: i stopped after watching the first 4 episodes... i don't know why?,, I like both WDH and KMJ but there is something off with the story... maybe i'll get back to it after it finishes it's airing....

TUNNEL with 2 of my favorites Choi Jin-hyuk (CJH) and Yoon Hyun-min for me was one of the best dramas of 2017.
TUNNEL was CJH's first drama after returning from his military commitment. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2014/15) was CJH's last drama before beginning his military commitment and it is in my top ten drama list. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it.

My expectations were low going into the Doctor drama "A poem a day" but the writing has a pleasantly light touch, the characters are amusing in a way that reminds me of 'Parks and Rec'. Only 2 episodes in and no idea what the eventual story line is going to be but thumbs up so far.

Parks and Rec? Oh, any comparison to Parks and Rec has me interested. That’s my all-time favorite show.

Maybe I will have to check this one out...

I've been a big fan of the Great Seducer but I feel like it's a little scattered as of this week. I really enjoyed the dark and intense tone peppered with the moments of humor in the earlier episodes, but this week felt like it awkwardly flip flopped between intense drama and cutesy-wootsy sweet stuff between the main couple. Like two different dramas almost? It feels a little disjointed now.

Girlfriday, "slow burn" is the exact phrase that went through my head watching it! At first it was way too slow. I could also easily skip through the issues with Ahjussi's bros. After episode 4 I was beyond hooked though. When Ji An was introduced by her killing a ladybug I thought, "Oh no, I'm not going to like this heroine." But shortly after I found her a remarkably intriguing and unique main character. I love that she is a super complex anti-heroine, so to speak. I also like the tone, and now even the "slow burn!"

The Great Seducer is ... not good. I’m not sure if they’re trying to adapt Dangerous Liaisons or Cruel Intentions, but either way, something is off with the show. Which is very disappointing considering they have some strong lead actors.
