I am so upset. I have loved Lee Seo Won since Uncontrollably Fond, and defended him his character in The Liar and His Lover to hell and back. I wanted him to be the Next Big Thing after Song Joong Ki and Park Bo Gum, and to be in the Premier '97 Line with Nation's Little Brother Yeo Jin Gu.

Now his career is over (as it should be), and he is dead to me (as he should be), and Blossom has to drop him (as they should). Now every one of his dramas is tainted for me, and I can't listen to any of Crude Play's OSTs ever again.

I obviously have more puppies where he came from, but he was always my favorite. I was rooting for you!

I can relate to your dilemma @panshel. I've been grappling with news about my favorite authors and filmmakers.

It's one thing to choose not to engage with an artist you don't know. But it's heartbreaking when someone—who's work you've admired—turns out to be an abuser or a predator. How do we support victims while reconciling the love we have for that artist's work?

As a student and teacher of literature and writing this has been a tough tough year. Thinking long term though, I hope and believe that in the end the arts will benefit from the truth coming out and a more diverse field artists will finally be given a chance to shine.

Career Over - Look at the no. of scandals and half of them involve abuse against opposite gender. Its like the norm of media world. There is a good possibility it all will be forgotten in few months and he might become popular in future.

2nd - People should read some articles about why Drinking makes men more aggressive, violent and intolerant.

I've seen cult of fans defending their oppas indefensible acts so i don't think the guy will loose everything.

Even Frank Sinatra was really violent and sexualy abusive and he've had problems with alcohol but people are still listening to him and admire him... Last week we were talking with one of my good friend about famous guys and their strange behaviour accepted or on purpose not seen things happening and she mentioned when there was a music festival in her town, her friend was working with sounds, so they went behind the scene when was the son of Bob Marley there and he was high and asking for girls to go with him to a hotel to have a "good fun". Nothing other interested him. So he isn't the only one..

depends on business interests entirely I am afraid. companies make and break people. If he is valuable to them, they´ll push his career up again. if they don´t see moneymaking potential, then no. somae artist make money despite. even the ones in the world who currently have some scandal. they are still making money. and some aren´t even when they have no scandal. It is only about business, absolutely nothing else (I am being cynical here, but....)
a little example: Israel killing people literally WHILE Netta was winning Eurovision. should be scandal too. Victory should be taken away, at least the right to organize next competition but ohhhhh nooooo. and she sang about the very thing that can bring another artist down. but she is on charts and making money so Israel can continue killing, nobody will care. Except the irish, they are petitioning.

I totally agree with you. It’s a money-making business to them - scandal or no scandal. It’s why vicious predators are being shielded. The outing of them would not do the predators bad but also the people protecting them.
I’m just largely uncomfortable with the way the media keeps reporting the Lee-so-Won incident. Everywhere I read it, they keep enunciating that he was drunk. Which, in k-entertainment world, means it won’t be long till he resumes his activity after claiming to have been repenting. Basically, they’re going to blame it on the alcohol. I just hope the identity of the actress is never revealed. The media won’t take her side either. I can already see it ‘she has a boyfriend... why was she drinking with someone else?’

One of the reasons I love Flower Boy Next Door is that it gives us such unusual leads. I love Go Dok Mi and her introversion, but Enrique is immortalized in my book as one of my favorite heroes. Not just because Yoon Shi-yoon is able makes this hyperactive character so vulnerable and lovable, I can also relate to his story of encountering racism growing up as an immigrant who had to navigate a foreign culture whilst in her teens.

Han Yeo-jin from Secret Forest because she's just great.

Not a lead, but also bad ass is Woo So-ji from Because This is My First Life. Ji-ho would have gotten a nod here, and even though I defended her actions somewhat, but by causing Se-hee so much pain she pushed herself from favorite heroine territory.

I'm sorry for the slow response! Have been stuck on Jewel in the Palace all day long. I just cannot turn away from this show.

Mishil is a complex character, perhaps not the most lovable which is why I didn't include her in my list, but she's definitely one of the most fascinating K-drama characters of all time.

I haven't watched a lot of the dramas in your comments so I can't say much about all those characters but yea, Mishil is definitely one of the most memorable characters.

I'm happy for you that you still have a lot of Jewel in the Palace goodness ahead of you. I can still hear the theme song, Onara, in my head (and heart) even though I watched it years ago.

My Ahjussi what a lovely drama. I really enjoyed the story development all the way to the end. The way tiny Lee Ji An was able to take down CEO in the face to face encounter had me howling "You don't have the mental capacity to think of this..." "You are petty when you like someone..." All true. All exposed a tiny man with tiny mentality and a huge chip on his shoulder. Anytime CEO would get agitated, his voice would get screechy an I felt a little country accent would pop up every now and again. The relationship with Lee Ji An and our Manager Park was beautiful , even if it was a 1-sided crush. They understood and accepted each other in a way that is rarely found today. I found the quirks of his brothers and neighborhood ahjussis to be good for comedic relief. What a bunch of grown a$$ dorks (I mean that in the most endearing way possible). When you have friends since childhood, you never fully see each other as adults. Playground fights childhood memories are present in everyday life, as mush as divorces, heartbreak and job woes. I enjoyed this drama a lot.

Wok of Love I find the story line funny thus far. The one thing that truly bothered me was watching our chef's body get tattooed with that awful angel wings. I'm not against tattoos at all. Just forcibly placing a permanent mark on someones body without their consent. That was hard to watch and made me seethe more than I though reasonable for a person watching a drama. HAHAHA

Rich Man, Poor Woman I watched the japanese version and understand the plot . However, the CEO is a just damn cruel to this girl. I'm sorry, you can't keep calling someone stupid in business settings, in front of coworkers, etc. That's just wrong. I don't know how that toxic language can turn into a 'ship' later on.

Happy Friday ALL!!!

btw, i don't know how to bold text, hope it works out ok.

I will miss "A Poem A Day" which wrapped up this week. It's hard to find dramas where neither the hero or heroine suffers from a bad case of noble idiocy, so that aspect of the drama was much appreciated. I was extremely happy that Bo Young ended up with Dr. Ye as I found them to be an adorable couple. Overall, a sweet fun drama.

Unfortunately, I continue to struggle to find anything enjoyable with "Something in the Rain". While crazy mom antics have fallen off, I'm finding it hard to like the heroine due to her continual lying and "I know best" attitude.

I am enjoying "Wok of Love" but just not loving it as much as I hoped I would. But I do like the main leads in this drama more than in the writer's previous dramas. The hero/heroine never clicked for me in Jealousy Incarnate and I disliked the hero in Miss Korea so much that I didn't want the heroine to end up with him.

I also can't determine what benefits COFFEEBAY is reaping by sponsoring "Something in the Rain". Ah yes, COFFEEBAY the company where male managers sexually harass female employees. Ah yes, COFFEEBAY, where the CEO approves the creation of fake documents to attack the credibility of it's the sexual harassment victims. Ah yes, COFFEEBAY a proud supporter of the "anti-Me Too" movement. Hmmm, so far can't think of one reason I would ever buy coffee from COFFEEBAY.

That smile is the smile of a man in love. I love My Ajusshi and seriously, perfection till the very end.

I've been reading wonders, but normally "I cried a lot" is not a selling point with me :-)) . Is it as bleak as it looks? I am dying for a good drama (snoozing through Queen of Mystery 2 right now), but I can't handle dark and depressing...

Required fields are marked *

Its not a bleak drama at all, its dark and at the end of the episode extremely uplifting.
Its about when you think you are at your worst phase what wonders can another person do in your life, what does a beautiful relationship mean, and as in the end what does it mean to payback for a wonderful relationship you share with some one. And what it means to love and what is your most wonderful moment in life?
Watch it slowly and you see its magical series.

Let me add one line, a perfect drama is the one which you can watch in every mood and it puts you in a good mood.
My comment on slow was because there is so much to absorb that you may feel overwhelmed. But then it depends upon tastes. :)
Happy watching!

3

@rket593 I understood your advice to mean that the show was heavy (a la first five episodes of Rescue Me), but if it is just dense, and rather uplifting than draining, I will definitely give it a try :-)

2

Yes, you got it: My Ajusshi is heavy and intense, but not draining and depressing. I almost didn't watch it because it came on the heels of Mother, which was stellar, but it was draining. My Ajusshi starts off bleakly, but gets lighter as it goes on. And don't be put off by all the reports of viewers crying-- most of the tears were shed because the drama is incredibly touching. I hope you end up loving it as much as we do.

3

So DramaFever finally managed to get a few more primo dramas. Four, iirc including the new one with Rain, and they've announced they're going to get Pretty Noona/Something in the Rain but it's going to drop all at once, for instance. (I thought Netflix US had that? I wonder if they both will get it at once?) I was just about to cancel my sub there, but I've been watching a few classics they have (Goong most recently).

This drama is soo good and realistic. I cried soo much while watching the last episode. Most especially when Ji an's computer friend came to her grandmothers funeral, I cried soo much. I don't know why I did but when he said thank you to PDH, I cried more.

I also understood Jang ki young's character. As Ji an said he was a nice person. He is just a product of bad parenting. As we all know, environment and society in which we find our selves have a significant impact on what or who we become

Well, I'm packing up my Subaru and heading out for tomorrow's mountain wedding with the Our Husband Oh Jak Doo fan club. It's a long drive so we'll need to sort out water, snacks, music, podcasts, neck pillows and the driving rotation. @egads—can you take the first driving shift? What are your essential road trip snacks?

I saw a tweet this week (last week?) that said something like "snacks for a road trip should look like an unsupervised 9-year-old was given $100" <3 yum!

I can definitely take the first driving shift. As far as snacks, licorice (red), chocolate, and potato chips or pretzels will keep me fed and happy. I also need a steady supply of coffee. Should I bring the really big thermos to share?

I've packed my dress hiking boots, and good wool vest for the occasion.

I love it. And your outfit sounds perfect.

So, back in the day, I had a serious addiction to Red Vines. During a lunch break, my colleague saw me eating red licorice and noted that I seemed to eat a lot of it. I told him, "Red Vines. Be careful though. Don't buy a big bag." A couple weeks later, he said, "Oh my god. You're right about Red Vines. I can't stop!"

We are true kindred spirits. Red Vines are the best. I bought a tub from the wholesale store for the drive.

Is there a theme for the wedding? Anything I should avoid wearing? I was thinking of wearing pink to match uri "Baby" ahjumma.

My vote is we listen to B1A4 during the drive, they are on my favorite chill driving playlist.

Subarus are a favorite in my part of the States. Every Subaru driver in my friendship circle has had at least one embarrassing incident because they mistook someone else's car for their own.

Just a couple weeks ago, my husband was on our block when he saw our Crosstrek coming down our street. He was expecting me back from our kid's taekwondo class and greeted me with silly gestures and funny faces. But the car continued to drive past our house, revealing a pair of puzzled passengers who were definitely not me.

My friend Susan (who's in her late 30's) did the same thing when she spotted her parents' orange Crosstrek. The orange ones are a rarer sight so she knew it was them. She sauntered towards the car, doing her best Monty Python silly walk ... until she was close enough to see that the couple in the front seat were NOT her parents. :D

You have great taste in friends (IMO, anyone who would do her best Monty Python silly walk to put a smile on her parents' faces is a gem). Just thinking about the Ministry of Silly walks has put a smile on my face. :)

We're a Subaru family, too. I have a black Outback...yes black like everyone else. My husband has a unicorn. We used to get letters from the dealers asking him to sell his car. Recently a neighbor left a note asking if he would like to sell his car. And my MIL has a yellow Baja, which is rare sighting these days.

OT week 67! Another beautiful day here, or maybe it was because I finished A Love So Beautiful that I’m in such a good mood! Or maybe because I’ve leaving for vacation tomorrow for 9 days! I don’t know, but it’s a beautiful day anyway!

I finally wrote the blog entry for my last Free the Kimchi meeting found here: http://www.freethekimchi.com but I forgot to mention what happened after the meeting, which was me dying in a fit of giggles from some silicone lips that one of the ladies saw on YouTube and got for all of us as a gag. We give each other beauty-related gifts and she was feeling left out because she hadn’t bought us anything (I’m the face mask queen) and we all tried it, and we looked like clowns! It’s one of those, “You had to be there” type moments. The premise of the lips is to be able to exercise those muscles to prevent wrinkles. Well, we had other reasons to exercise those muscles too, and it just got worse and worse from there! ROTCL (where C=couch) was literally what I was doing!

On the Asian drama front, finishing the web C-drama A Love So Beautiful was oh-so-satisfying. The ending with Jiang Chen’s thoughts and reactions was what I needed to have closure, but it’s just the beginning for those two, so I’m writing an essay with my thoughts about how things may (or may not) end up for them. I know several physician colleagues (all surgeons) that are divorced because neglecting their spouses, and this couple could see the same result if some very specific things are not fostered in their relationship. There were several things I saw in their relationship which will be huge hurdles in the future, so I guess my essay will be marriage advice from someone who has been there and done that for Jiang Chen and Xiaoxi going forward. Coming soon—or after vacation, depending on how much time I have today!

And LIVE is FINALLY ON NETFLIX! I watched eps 9- part of 10; It was easy to get back into these people’s lives and I’m still so engrossed in their flaws and how real this show is. And the music too; does anyone have a good link for all of it? I’ve downloaded the rest of the season to watch while on vacation with Prison Playbook and the last 4 eps of A Poem a Day, and maybe an episode of Busted, and also Come Here and Hug Me at some point.

I was asked last week to write another chapter of My Daughter and the Math Genius. I think because she knows I’m interested, she tells me stuff about him, so she’s been more forward in telling be things. (I hope this continues throughout her teenage years too—I want to know about all her crushes!)

Chapter 4:

Daughter: Math Genius got first place at our class math competition. (Doesn’t he sound like Jiang Chen already, @modernflapper?)

Me: What did you get?

Daughter: Second! And B (a Chinese boy that is in their little math club whose dad is SO HARD ON HIM) didn’t even place!

Husband: I feel sorry for B.

Me: I have...

...to talk to Math Genius’ mom so you guys can get together this summer.

Husband: Stop it!

Me: No, really, Daughter wants to do well next year in the math league and obviously they’ve figured out what they’re doing. We don’t do anything (like, really, next to nothing). Would you be up for that?

Daughter: Sure, I DO want to do good next year.

Me: *And I just want pretty genius grandbabies in 20 years.*

Moral of the Story: I’m not a tiger parent, I’m just thinking about my daughter’s future (said every tiger parent ever).

2nd Moral: I feel really sorry for B too. I hope he doesn’t burn out by middle school. There are tiger parents, and then there is B's dad.

3rd Moral: Summer vacay, here I come!

A Math League Romance. I love this.

Way way way back, I was an alternate for my high school math league team, and this was also when I was in my punk phase. First meet I went to I walked into the room, and not only was I the only girl, but my black clad, thick black eyeliner self contrasted so much with the sea of nerdy boys the whole bunch of them literally stared at me like I was an alien. It was like a scene from a John Hughes film.

I'd watch that John Hughes film! My daughter is the only girl too. But the 3rd place girl is not in math league yet, so maybe she will be next year. The kids in my daughter's class are all overachievers. That girl is an amazing dancer/ballerina as well. I guess you could say she's under the radar smart, but not anymore!

The reality even included such tropes as a pair of glasses held together by tape, and short sleeved button up shirts accessorized with pocket protectors.

If I ever write a novel about a high school punk, it's definitely a scene to be included.

@egads May 18, 2018 at 5:38 PM

Be sure to include at least one pizza-stained t-shirt to complete the techie nerd look. It it's set BPC (Before Pocket Calculators), slide rules are a must. ;-)

3

@pakalanapikake Of course, I wouldn't dare forget the pizza stained t-shirt worn with slightly high water jeans. I once tried explaining slide rules to my kids...

I like this little updates on your daughter and Math Genius, it's a mini kdrama.and no,you are not a tiger parent 😉

Enjoy your vacation Ally!

In honor of the ending of the fabulous My Ahjussi and one of my all time favorite OST songs, here is a "translation" of Vincent Blue's There's A Rainbow. Besides being ear candy, the lyrics to this song are depressingly gorgeous and have some great imagery and metaphors that I think got lost in the translations I saw. Just a note of caution, I use some interpretive freedom when coming up with translations since the ambiguity of the song ends up making it nonsensical if you just do word-for-word translations like most sites do. Here's the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqmLKC_w5KQ

Without even opening my eyes I greet this morning
And send up a prayer for my worn-down self
The yesterday I had divested myself of, I put back on
Struggle through another day and comfort myself

Never-changing, everyone moves towards the same place
Without making a sound and like clockwork
On that endless road way off in the distance
A single speck must struggle across the great space
For the sun to set on my days

My sense of trust that, like a habit, I lay to rest
The excuses that are apathetically piling up
I carve myself out to resemble the world
And bury all that I am deep within my heart

The red stained glow of the horizon of a setting sun somewhere
Hardens my shadow into start solidity
As if doing so can extinguish that light, if I endure it day after day
Will it bring me closer to my dream that was like wishful thinking?

Has this exhausting night come to an end?
A rainbow appears again

Never-changing, everyone moves towards the same place
Without making a sound and like clockwork
On that endless road way off in the distance
A single speck must struggle across the great space
For the sun to set on my days

I'm chasing after rainbows again today

I finished My Ajusshi. It is now my favorite all-time drama and Misaeng is in second place...
I am enjoying Wok of Love. It is so wacky and playful!

On a personal level, I have been called back for a third interview for the job of my dreams. Could you please send positive thoughts and or prayers my way?

Finally, I'm watching North and South (2004 BBC historical drama) and am enjoying it immensely.

good luck with your interview. Fighting!!

I love North and South. I loved the drama so much that I bought the book by Gaskell to read. It does explain how the South and North are so different in many ways in UK.
Mr. Thornton is rough on surface and sometimes he is portrayed rather cruel but boy! Richard Armitage is brilliant in it. He became one of my favorite British actors after this drama. Enjoy the jewel.
