Premiere Watch: About Time, Miss Hammurabi, Sketch

We’ve got a fresh onslaught of cable dramas on the way, two of them with a touch of fantasy. I wasn’t really expecting three new shows this week, but they always seem to sneak up on me.

About Time

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This is the new fantasy romance from PD Kim Hyung-shik of the adorable, feel-good rom-com Twenty Again, so this is the premiere I’m most looking forward to. Lee Sung-kyung stars as a young woman who has the ability to see people’s “life clocks,” showing the remainder of their lifespan like a digital timer. One day she glimpses her own remaining time like a death sentence, but the moment she meets Lee Sang-yoon, her time starts flowing differently and she knows she needs to be around him in order to live. It’s as good a reason to force two people together as any, and they seem adorable together already just from the teasers alone, so I have good hopes for an easygoing romance full of heart.

Miss Hammurabi

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Legal drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Miss Hammurabi is a novel adaptation that’s being penned for the small screen by the original author, and it’s also a bit of a departure for PD Kwak Jung-hwan, who’s famous for his action-heavy thrillers like The K2, Chuno, and Runaway Plan B. It seems like your standard underdog legal drama about doing the right thing and using the law to help those in need, but taken from the perspective of courtroom judges this time. I guess that makes it close to Nothing to Lose, though I think this one will veer less comical and more earnest. Go Ara and L headline as the two young judges, mentored by veteran Sung Dong-il. I can’t say I have high expectations for this cast (mostly I’m still really worried about L carrying a lead), but I will be on the lookout for clips of Sung Dong-il and Go Ara’s Answer Me father-daughter reunion. One inside joke and I’ll be happy.

Sketch

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Action thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I don’t know if you can call this thriller a fantasy, but Sketch does have a supernatural element in its premise. It’s about a detective who can draw a crime scene before it happens, and the investigation team that uses her prophetic sketches in order to stop the crimes from happening. Lee Sun-bin is the seer/sketcher, Rain and Lee Dong-gun are rival investigators out in the field, and at the helm is PD Im Tae-woo of the quirky ensemble comedy Yoo-na’s Street. I think this drama won’t just be a procedural, which is promising—it’ll focus on the butterfly effect of stopping these crimes before they’re meant to happen, which we all know from watching Signal can lead to even worse consequences. Other reasons to watch: Rain running around being a badass. Should I have led with that?

Nah it wasn't , I didn't even watch more than 4 episodes. I couldn't stand Yoona character.
From my expierience subway show up in 2 cases: drama is popular :Signal, Live and etc. etc.
and second cases when drama has hot or famous actors: K2, Good witch (although it was pretty popular show) etc.

i don't like Yoona's character... I like the stepmother's though...

Based on the thousands of Subway Sandwiches that I have seen in K-Dramas, Subway do not seem to serve the meatball sandwich in Korea. Would someone please confirm my suspicion, it keeps me up at night. Thank you in advance.

Korea has such a wider range. It is so unfair.
On the other hand, they serve meatballs in Europe (UK is still in Europe. As of yet)

I'm most excited about Ms Hammurabi because I feel like its premise will be executed well and may be more heart-warming than legal jargon.
About Time has a fascinating premise but it'll remain on hold because I'm hoping it doesn't fall flat midway. I'm living to see LSK on my screen once again after the fantastic WFKBJ. It's giving me milder, more rom-comy, less horrory vibes than Master's Sun.

Sketch seems interesting too but maybe I'll try it out after initial reactions. Waiting to see how far the time-travel, future- seeing events will be incorporated.

I have been waiting for About Time. I really like Lee Sang Yoon especially after watching him in Master in the house. The leads in Miss Hammurabi are beautiful but Go Ara turned me off in Hwarang with her crying and whining all the time which isn't her fault I guess and more the pathetic writing of her character. L is also very good looking and he has improved his acting but his acting still feels like ...acting. Not very natural. The way some actors completely let go and become that character.
As for Sketch I will probably pass that. I like Lee Sun Bin but don't care about the male leads much.

See my comments on MISS H. below.

I have the same reservations about the leads that you have, after persevering through MASK and BLACK (in which Song Seung-heon was absolutely terrific in dual roles as a dorky detective and THE badass Grim Reaper). I am excited out of my shoes to see Ryu Deok-hwan back on TV. Welcome back, King Gongmin!

RULER: MASTER OF THE MASK. L was good in it, given how his character was written. Anyone in a production with Yoo Seung-ho runs the risk of coming off as inexpressive in comparison.

(From the news article) Miss Hammurabi became the talk of town after the first broadcast on 21st. The reason is because the writer is currently serving judge Moon Yoo-suk. He is chief judge and became famous by writing a column "to chief judges in the country" He wrote something like "Don't have get-together", "Don't say "We are not strangers because we ARE strangers". Judge Moon graduated Seoul university and Harvard Law school and have served as judge since 1997.

Thank you so much for translating that article. Very interesting. Now it makes me really curious to see a real-life judge's depiction of the profession. ;-)

I didn't intend to watch it since I don't get korean legal dramas (is the writing just wrong or what?), but this sounds quite intriguing, thank you.

May 25, 2018 at 5:26 AM

I've watched the first week's episodes, and like MISS HAMMURABI, although I found the title character a bit high-handed and oblivious at times. Some of her ideas of social justice go over like lead balloons because of unintended consequences that are pointed out by more experienced judges. There are nice didactic interludes that are not pedantic. It really reminds me quite a bit of LIVE in the sense that we see the everyday work of judges and the support staff who work with them. The first case the new judges hear is a good one. I liked how it was handled. So far, there is good food for thought in the show. It looks promising, and seems to be getting off to a good start.

1

Hi, @pakalanapikake, thank you, that sounds promissing. Thoughts of social justice should be handled carefully. If taken lightly they sound idiotic, not revolutionary. *fingers crossed*

1

To add to fan's comment, I wrote up some background information in Soompi. The drama is based on a novel (with the same name) by Judge Moon. The novel consists of "real" cases Moon has encountered. The eponymous heroine is more like a narrative device propelling the investigation process and opening up different perspectives. The names of both leads have important connotations. Park Cha Oh Reum, is a word play on "correctness" (Ba Reum) and "brimming with emotion" (벅차오름 , Park Cha Oh Reum). The female lead represents an archetypal force as a contrast to Ba Reun (the homonym of "righteousness"). The trio of department 44 is meant to embody the tension between passion (Oh Reum), principle ( Ba Reun) and worldly wisdom (Judge Han), which each judge needs to confront with in trial.

5

@Ennui Young June 2, 2018 at 5:58 AM

Thank you for answering the question in the back of my mind regarding the associate judges' names. I had a feeling that there was something significant (aside from 4-syllable Korean names being unusual). That entire layer of subtext had been missing in action.

Now that I can see how she also functions as a plot device, I better understand what makes Oh-reum tick. She is indeed a force to be reckoned with. On another level, force that is unfettered and left undirected (i.e., not controlled, tempered, and constructively channeled for productive purposes) leads to chaos, the exact opposite of law and order.

The fact that Oh-reum is female adds an interesting twist when one considers that the wisdom, intelligence, passion, and creativity of half of humanity has been systematically subverted for millennia all over the planet. Then consider how that has also been the case for the vast majority of humans of humble birth, social status, political influence, and financial standing, regardless of sex. A colossal waste of human potential.

The trio of department 44 is meant to embody the tension between passion (Oh Reum), principle ( Ba Reun) and worldly wisdom (Judge Han), which each judge needs to confront with in trial.

Thanks for putting it in such an elegant nutshell. Now instead of being irritated by Oh-reum's starry-eyed idealism, I can appreciate how her energy upsets the equilibrium in the system in a such manner that the spirit of the law can be better realized in practice. The current case of the female judge who has a miscarriage because of inhumane job pressure and working hours makes her a canary in the coal mine -- as well as a poster child for all Korean workers.

2

Wow that is really interesting! No wonder L was like you've seen too many movies/dramas to his gangster blinddate when she kept asking him questions. Guess the judge will try to show the real side of things through this drama.

Agreed about Lee Sang Yoon on Master in the House! I'm really glad he joined the show; it shows a different side of him and he was such a noob in the first few episodes with the first master (whether this image is contrived or not, who knows) and I'm happy to see him loosen up in the subsequent episodes.

Which implies I'd better watch ABOUT TIME when there's less on my plate.

Thanks for your Premiere Watch, GirlFriday!

My main reason to watch MISS HAMMURABI is Ryu Deok-hwan in his return from military service. And after his wonderful turn as Hongil police chief Han-sol in LIVE, the prospect of seeing Sung Dong-il in a position to do something about the criminals his cops apprehended makes me happy as a clam. What a wonderful actor. Between him and RDW, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that their acting chops will osmote into the greener members of the cast and entice solid performances from them as well. Please, not another BLACK, or I will throw the book at Her Honor.

I've been enjoying the first week's episodes of MISS HAMMURABI. At times I've wanted to throttle her for her lack of consideration for others, but this is all part of the learning curve. It's kind of fun to see it in tandem with SUITS and LAWLESS ATTORNEY.

I definitely get the feeling that this show is doing for judges what LIVE did for law enforcement officers. I like the vibe a lot. It's a bit didactic, but it's not pedantic. And it shows that common sense is just as important as book learning. Maybe more so.

Ryu Deok-hwan's character seems to be a gadfly who stirs the pot. I'm not quite sure what he's up to. I don't have a sense that he's a baddie like Judge Godmother Theresa of Gisung in LAWLESS ATTORNEY. ;-)

I don't know the answer to your question. GOD'S QUIZ 4 aired during the summer of 2014, and was Ryu Deok-hwan's most recent drama prior to enlisting. How were the ratings? He was in 3 movies that were released in 2015-2016, which must have kept him too busy to film a drama, too. Was there talk of a fifth season of GOD'S QUIZ? I've only seen a couple of season 1 episodes.

It’s very good of her to be so open and strong about her faith, as it doesn’t seem that many Korean celebrities are too open about that aspect of their lives, but with a name like “Sung Kyung” (which means ‘bible’ in Korean) she has no reason to hide her faith 😏😏😊😊

Hello, Beanies. I'll be appearing in the above dramas, as well:

as LIFE CLOCK in ABOVE TIME:
Or more precisely, as TICKING LIFE CLOCK. I told them to drop the digital life clock character, and replace it with a ticking life clock, which is so RICH, and so much more LAYERED, and they agreed with me. Isn't that great? So yeah, as LIFE CLOCK, I'm going to deliver the performance of my cameod life. I have lines, too! Oh, gosh, I'm so excited, I'm going to share with you my soul-stirring, earth-shattering lines right now...are you ready? Take a deep breath, here goes:

I intone TICK and TOCK in quick succession at random but IMPORTANT moments, and in really dramatic, climactic moments, I go TICKTOCKTICKTOCK! I'm getting goosebumps just listening to myself saying that aloud, imagine the effect it's going to have on you!

MISS HAMMURABI: I requested the character of HAM, but was informed that THERE WAS NO SUCH CHARACTER 😐. I wasn't very happy, I can tell you that, but such is my star power they immediately offered me the role of PAPER CUP. It was a choice between L or Go Ara, and I opted for L, of course. On hindsight, it's a good thing I wasn't HAM, I doubt I would have lasted beyond five seconds on screen; as L'S PAPER CUP I can almost guarantee I can last the entire 16 episodes safe and sound, though I can't promise I'll stay looking as fine as I do right now, and it's weird, but I have a strange heavy feeling of doom when I think about the progress of my narrative. A true artiste has a sensitive soul, so it could just be my soul communicating with me, haha. Dramaland is filled with risks, and I will face all challenges head on! Fighting!

Check out what I look like in the poster above. L has really nice, soft, warm hands. Just sayin'.

SKETCH: I had to turn down the role of SKETCH, regretfully. I did it for Rain, because this heart of mine, that is Overflowing With Humanity, worried that I would eclipse him. Rain must have heaved a huge sigh of relief when he heard about my magnanimous decision. Good luck, Rain.

That's it, guys, for now. Wish me luck, and watch out for my power-charged cameos! 😁

@yyishere YY,

ROFLMAO over your analogue performance in ABOUT TIME!

Watching your second hand sweep across your face as time inexorably marches on will be a gazillion times more stressful and thrilling than seeing boring old digital numerals flip over. You truly know how to amp-up the tension.

To add to you temporal impact (as well as wangle additional character extensions and acting credits) see if you can persuade Writer-nim and PD-nim that you are up to the task of playing the egg timer in the breakfast interlude in the kitchen in scene #6 in episode 3. The conversation that unfolds as the eggs poach is pivotal.

One of the time jumps overshoots to the distant past. See if you can bag the role of hour glass, okay? It's even more old-school than an analogue clock, and could open up additional exciting possibilities in sagueks. Maybe you can land a role in HUNDRED DAY HUSBAND. I missed seeing your smiling face in GRAND PRINCE. Hwaiting!

If I'm not mistaken, there's also a scene in a formal garden in ABOUT TIME, episode 7. You could easily play the sundial -- blindfolded with your hands tied behind your back. It would be a walk in the park for someone with your acting chops. Be sure to stop and smell the roses. Aja!

As for MISS HAMMURABI, sweetie, you have another possible paper cup to portray: Ryu Deok-hwan's! He may not be one of the leads, but you would be in genuinely capable hands. His finesse is truly stunning. One of my very favorite actors, particularly when it comes to nuanced portrayals of internal states via the eyes. You night not have as many scenes with him as with either of the leads, but they would be intense, moving, and memorable. Playing opposite such an accomplished actor is a sure-fire way to take your acting to the next level. Go for it, kiddo. ;-)

You are a True Artiste, YY! Your compassion for your fellow actors is so humble and considerate. Although I'm sorry to learn that you have selflessly taken yourself out of consideration for the title role in SKETCH, it is a wonderful way of giving back. It's also a great way to sidestep a problematic role popping out of the woodwork. Now you don't have to concern yourself with suddenly morphing into a picture of Dorian Gray or something equally insidious.

*sniffs into tissue*

Your grace is immeasurable!

Hi, Pakalana! Thank you for your timely advice on the wonderfully diverse and challenging clockery roles, which will definitely push my craft to new heights!

EGG BEATER is at the top of my list. Whoa, did I just type EGG BEATER???? I meant to type EGG TIMER. Let me state for the record, I do not condone violence in any form. Even if they offer me a million bucks, I would never, ever, ever, beat an egg.

SUNDIAL sounds majestic and radiant, but since I am doing my own stunts, being blindfolded with my hands tied behind my back, sprawled out flat in the sun all day could be dangerous, I could get heatstroke and collapse from dehydration, and ruin my chances of clinching BEST INANIMATE OBJECT at the awards next year.

I wouldn't mind taking on the role of THE GARDEN, though; I must admit it appeals to the foliage in me.

Is this a late-breaking gig you managed to land? I hope so. You bring such gravitas to your geological inanimate roles. Break a leg!

The only one I’ll be picking up is About Time this time around, because it’s about time I saw a drama with Lee Sang-yoon after finding him on Master in the House and loving him in it. And wasn’t he a physics major? Isn’t there something about the space-time continuum and bending time in that? Relativity sounds like a perfect drama for him! So excited about this one!

And the trailer reminds me of the OTP in Master’s Sun, where she’s desperate to be near him, but he wants nothing to do with her. I think I’ll like it!

Yes it definitely has the Masters Sun vibes. GHJ is a pro at playing needy desperate characters, LSK on the other hand plays her role very subtly, which I liked. However there is ZERO chemistry between the leads :( I dont know if I will continue watching. And whats with these huge age gaps in drama nowadays? An Ahjusshi and an Agasshi (did the use it right?) playing house? Ugh.

@ally-le,

You're right about the space-time continuum! LOL!

I was surprised to read that Lee Sang-yoon got a degree in physics, and launched his acting career with a beer commercial. How cool is that?

He was terrific as the diving instructor #2 son in LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. I also enjoyed his turn in ANGEL EYES. He was in THE DUO, which I have yet to see. I'm curious to see him in his sageuk roles.

I’m really loving him in Master in the House. He’s such a no-pain-feeling-robot-gem. I’ve seen him in quite a few of his projects but I loved him the most in ‘On the way to the Airport!’ And he was also good in Whisper. I’m really looking forward to it because it reminds me of one of my favorite flawed gems, Master’s Sun.

I'm in a serious drama slump that I couldn't bring myself to watch anything aside from Wok Of Melo (but if it's not because of Janghyuk, maybe I'm not even watching it) LOL. But I'm a simple girl, I saw Lee Sangyoon and his dimples, now I know what I want to re-watch - it's my all time feel good drama Twenty Again.

But Nothing to Loose was not really comical... If you pass the first episodes, the story starts to be more serious. I think it's sad that they made the character of Park Eun Bin reacted like that in the first episode because it made people to stop the drama thinking it was a mess. I'm not sure about Miss Hammurabi because the cast is not so great when Park Eun Bin, Yoo Wu Jin and Dong Ha were really great.

I’m definitely checking out ‘About time’ but I’m on the fence about the other two.
Miss H - I love, love Song Dong il Ahjussi but I’m worried he and the supporting cast would have to carry the weight of the show themselves. I’ve seen Go Ara in quite a few things and my favorite of them was ‘You’re all surrounded’ but Cha Seung Won and Seung gi we’re in it, so. I find her just okay, I guess. My real problem is with L. I’ve also seen him in some things and while I admit his acting has gotten better, I didn’t enjoy him in Mask one bit but the drama had its own problems.
Sketch: I don’t doubt Rain’s acting, I just don’t have much trust in his projects. I might check it out but I’m on the fence.

I am sure these will be pretty good, but I seem to lean towards romantic comedies so I will probably look at About Time first. I'm the most intrigued with that one.

I will check About Time for my girl LSK, but not feeling the pairing or the story so far based on the teasers. It would be nice to be wrong, because I miss a good romance drama.
Also, I will check Hwang Jung Eum's drama, since I like her and Nam Goong Min a lot. I think they have potential to be very funny as a couple, and they look great together. :)

I watched about time and miss hammu and I enjoyed both. Cinematography wise and acting wise About time is better. However I found the writing of Miss hammu more interesting. I will watch both for now as they both have my interest.

Also Lee Sung Kyun's really sings well assuming it was her voice during the performance in ep 1. Also she's very very pretty.

Finally I'm watching more k-dramas than C-dramas again.
My k-list now has :
Mistress (y subs so slow TT)
Lawless attorney (badass leads)
Come and hug me (my favourite plz stay good)
About time (Lee Sang Yoon dimples and pretty LSK)
Miss Hammurabi (beautiful L and less whiny Go Ara - Hwarang horrible flashbacks will haunt me forever)
Will give Nam goong min's new drama a try though I'm a bit weary of screechy hwan jeung eum in rom coms.
Also secretary Kim and the robot one I'm looking forward to it. So overall May has been a good month for k-dramas.

ABOUT TIME should work 😎
Lee Sang-yoon has worked with OTPs close to his age and he always comes out as a charming, sensitive romantic lead. Think Lee Bo-young (Whisper & My Daughter Seoyoung); Choi Ji-woo in Twenty Again; Kim Ha-neul in On the Way to the Airport.😀
Lee Sung-kyung has earned her stripes both as 2nd lead (Doctors, Cheese in the Trap) and as lead actor. She was great with Nam Joo-hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bokjoo. And she sings well.😀
Above all, I see this paring --LEE SANG-YOON & LEE SUNG-KYUNG working wonderfully. 😎😎😎
LSY was totally convincing as OTP to the younger Goo Hye-sun in Angel Eyes, one of the most memorable love stories I've ever seen.

I watched 1st episode of About Time last night. I thought it was interesting but then I lost my enthusiasm and dropped it. I love LSY but I'm not feeling his acting. Miss Hammurabi surprised me! I loved the characters. I've been looking for drama to replace My Ahjussi and I think I found my new kdrama weekly fix :)

Miss Hammurabi- I saw first two episode... I didn't really like it because it forces you to greatly suspend your belief of the Korean judicial process...

About Time- I don't know how to feel about this... I didn't like it but I didn't hate it either..

Sketch- I haven't seen this yet, hopefully it will be good. I love good thrillers.

I tried out Miss Hammurabi for Myung and wasn't impressed with the first episode because I got a little frustrated with Oh-reum and her idealism but boy was I blown away by the second ep <3 I'm totally sold. so they started showing a different side of Oh-reum right off the bat, she obviously changed from the privileged rich kid that Ba-reun remembered and that explains a lot about her because of how she grew up, the community she's been living with. it kinda explains why she has so many soft spots too but that aside it got SO CUTE when his "one-sided" crush got revealed to go both ways gahhhh im kinda happy there's no second lead to complicate the relationship so that there'll be more progress + more time to focus on the cases and the judges themselves. honestly appreciated how her overzealousness and somewhat irresponsibility led to real negative consequences and ended up burdening her colleagues, this got pretty realistic and props to the show for not over-glorifying this naiveness and idealism, really hate it when sometimes just a change in attitude/some sincerity brings results, effort needs to be put in first to understand the system and understand why it's in place before trying to go around/beat it, seems to me what a real life judge would have to undergo. will keep watching!

Ok, for a hilarious moment, your "go both ways" had a completely different meaning for me and I madly trying to ship our female lead an sexy secretary and THEN I understood.
YES to everything you nicely said about her naiveness being problematic and shown as such, instead of glorified like most shows do, it was my favorite part of an awesome second episode.

I hope dramabeans will recap Miss Hammurabi. I've seen episode 1 for now and am really interested in the show. However, since I come from another country, I am not familiar with Korea's judicial system. How come very young lawyers get to be judges? Hope I get an answer. Thanks.

Lol db has become an advertisement place for Korean makeup products. There’s no more detailed info or news about casting or big events that have shaken up the Korean entertainment industry like the #metoo cases or even deaths. They make recaps only about the most popular dramas and dramas where the staff’s fave actors are going to be in. After the update, dramabeans has become difficult to use and a very boring website.

Yes, everybody should be talking more about this. The amount of ads we now have versus the very small content has become ridiculous. This is almost a forum, it should have all the qualities of a real forum.

We all know this is happening, but I think most of us are trying to be patient. Something is obviously happening behind-the-scenes. @mary has opened up a little bit about the issues they're facing, but I do wish they'd be more transparent with us. I think they bit off more than they could chew with the site update and all of the additions, and they're struggling with how to deal with everything. I don't know much more than that.

We all miss having more recaps, something they have been slacking on since December or so, and more news. Back in November we had 8 shows being recapped--full recaps, not just Open Threads. Now that My Ajusshi has ended, we only have one show being fully recapped. I also noticed that LollyPip is the only one doing full recaps now and that has me worried and confused. Even if JB and GF are too busy with other things to recap, what happened to all of the other minions?

I still love this site and spend way too much time here, but it's the Beanie community that keeps me coming back rather than the content. I'm really hoping things will start to improve soon. Again, I'm trying to be patient and understanding... but it's been a while now since these problems began.

If they don't want to talk about it I think it's their choice, I wish they would because people are curious about it, but it's fine if they don't explain. I just think making money from that many ads when it's a place most people only come back because of the free posts from beanies, is exploiting this community. Sorry, if I'm saying something silly, anyone please contradict me, but otherwise, just being honest.

2

It would honestly be so much better if they went back to the old dramabeans, the one we still had in 2016. It was easier to use and most important, this site used to have interesting content, something to really discuss about. I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, and since they decided to go through this renewal of this website, I respect that. However, it’s making me less and less motivated to come back. DB used to be my primary source of drama info and recaps. I used to read the opinions and insights too because they always had a different perspective. Now I’m seeing that even some beanies have stopped visiting because of these precise issues.

Omg I made a comment about this (an maldita too) and we were having the same thoughts! I certainly find it odd and I really wish as a long time lurker/reader that they would tell us readers what’s going on. Why the lack of K-entertainment updates, casting news and recaps? This used to be the most versatile K-drama oriented website but now there aren’t many other blogs like this, except maybe koalasplayground but there are no recaps, just K-ent and C-ent and occasionally J-ent news.

I m not Korean, so my knowledge about the system mostly come from googleing (it may incluede incorrect information; so feel free to correct it)
==================
Up until 2017, it is possible to become a judge around late-20 in SK
There were 2 ways to practice law in SK between 2009 - 2017

The old system ( up to 2017)
Get undergad degree (be it in law or whatever subject one wants) and take Korean Bar Association's National Judicial Examination.
After passing the examination (which has a pass rate of less than 5%) must study for an additional two-year training course at Korea’s Judicial Research and Training Institute and pass a final exam before they are admitted to practise.
The top 1% of those who pass the final exam after 2 years training would be appointed as judges (with opt out option to become prosecutors or lawyers). Top 3% would be prosecutors (with opt-out to be lawyers). The rest would become lawyers.

The new system (since 2009)
Get undergrad degree, then JD. After that one need to take Lawyer Admission Test (which is distinct from the Korean Bar Examination); once they pass this exam, they are eligible to practise law in Korea.
After at least 3 years practicing law, a lawyer can apply for Korean Bar Examination to become prosecutors or judges.

From the drama, Oh Reum and Ba Reun follow the old system.
In BR’s case, 4 years LLB (+ 2 military duty )+ 2 year training, he can become a judge at 26 or 28.
In OR’s case, she is major in music, learns about the Bar exam by herself. She may pass the Bar 1 year after BR, so he is her senior although they are the same age.

By the way, more than 50% of SK civil cases do not have lawyers. SK judges in civil cases act more like magistrates to settle dispute between 2 parties than give verdicts like US system.

Watch the first episode of all three of them, I'm gonna stick with About Time. It's a typical cheesy romance drama, but it's not trying too hard for being deep or meaningful, so I know what I'm getting.
Miss Hammurabi, I can't take it seriously since the judges are too young for being judges.
Sketch, dropped because it killed off character that I like in the second episode. I also don't want to see potential romance happen between rain and the sketch girl.
