Are You Human Too: Episodes 9-10

Nam Shin-III’s secret only makes life harder for So-bong, who desperately wishes she could just forget what she knows and go back to her life. She’s torn between shock and the fact that everywhere she goes, he’s there, smiling that endearing Cinnamon Roll Smile at her. What can she do when she just wants to wallow in her bad mood, but she can’t shake the fluffy android puppy that seems determined to win her over? Oh well, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

EPISODE 9 RECAP

So-bong thinks about how Shin went from a guy who hit her in public, to someone who hugged her when she cried and saved her life, and how he said that he doesn’t have a heart or emotions. She thought it was strange, but she never expected to learn that he wasn’t even human.

After he stopped the driverless M-car’s wild behavior, So-bong had been frantic with worry, until she saw the damage to Nam Shin-III. His android insides had shown through where his human-like skin had been torn away, and she’d backed away, falling and screaming at him not to come closer.

Ro-ra drives up to them, and So-bong tries to run off, but Ro-ra sends Nam Shin-III to catch her. He tosses her over his shoulder with a cheerful grin and takes her to Ro-ra’s car, and Ro-ra drives away.

The paparazzi are busy shouting questions at Chairman Nam, asking if the M-car project will be scrapped. He refuses to answer and leaves in his limo, leaving Jong-gil, who masterminded the M-car’s hacking, grinning like the Cheshire cat.

Nam Shin-III holds So-bong’s wrists so she can’t jump out of the car while he politely introduces himself. She screams that she doesn’t care, but Ro-ra says she’ll explain soon, instructing Nam Shin-III not to let So-bong go. So-bong spots Nam Shin-III’s metal insides again and mutters that it’s disgusting.

When they arrive at Ro-ra’s hideout, So-bong cries that Nam Shin-III is hurting her and he lets go. She tries to run again, only to be cut off by Young-hoon. Inside, Ro-ra fixes the damage to Nam Shin-III while he apologizes for getting caught by So-bong.

In another room, Young-hoon plays So-bong a recording of Reporter Jo confessing that So-bong is working for Jong-gil. He tells So-bong not to be angry at her friend, and she asks if he’s threatening her now. She admits that Jong-gil hired her, but says she had no idea they were hiding something so huge.

Young-hoon bluntly asks her not to tell Jong-gil what she knows, and to work for them instead. He offers to pay her whatever she wants if she’ll help them hide Nam Shin-III’s identity, but she’s still upset and asks where the real Nam Shin is.

She complains that she can’t believe any of this, but Ro-ra comes in and drags So-bong to Shin’s room, where he’s still lying in a coma. She tells So-bong that he’s her real son, and that he was hit by a truck right in front of her. She says that she believes Jong-gil may have staged that accident and the one today.

Ro-ra insists that Shin will wake up, and she begs So-bong to help them until that happens. So-bong asks how she could help, and Young-hoon says she can keep Jong-gil from finding out the truth. At the same time, Jong-gil calls So-bong, and Nam Shin-III comes in and looks at her innocently.

She answers, and agrees to meet with him now. When she hangs up, Young-hoon tells her that Jong-gil is a danger to Shin. She asks if they’ll make Nam Shin-III kill her if she goes, but Ro-ra stops her and sinks to her knees. She offers So-bong anything, even her own body, to help her and Shin.

Nam Shin-III walks to Ro-ra and hugs her because she’s crying. So-bong, confused and distraught, leaves the house with Young-hoon on her heels. She yells that they’re all crazy, but Young-hoon says that Shin is what matters the most to them. Nam Shin-III joins them, and So-bong shrieks that nobody would believe her if she told the truth, asking why they’d trust her just because she took their money.

Young-hoon grabs her arm and snarls that a person’s life is at stake. So-bong glares at him and Nam Shin-III in turn, then says she’ll pretend she didn’t see a robot. She tells Young-hoon to follow her if he doesn’t trust her, and that he’ll have to take that risk eventually, anyway.

Toady tells Jong-gil that he’s been asked to do a TV interview about the M-car’s test drive, and he says he’ll do it after meeting with So-bong. He instructs Toady to leak information about Shin to the press, painting him as a greedy brat with no experience.

Young-hoon and Nam Shin-III ride with So-bong to her meeting, and Young-hoon begs her one last time before she goes to speak with Jong-gil. She says sarcastically that they’re making her feel important, and tells them to wait for her.

Jong-gil makes a halfhearted attempt to seem worried about Shin, and he asks So-bong what happened during the test drive. She tells him that when the M-car went out of control, it reminded Shin of his car accident, and that he seemed traumatized. She says that Young-hoon collected Shin, and when Jong-gil asks if she came straight here from the accident scene, she remembers Ro-ra’s suspicion that Jong-gil may have staged it.

She hesitates, and Jong-gil asks if she needs more money. She says money is great, but she wants to know exactly how much she’s supposed to find out for his daughter’s marriage. Jong-gil chuckles that she should know by know what he’s after, and that he hired her for him as well as for his daughter.

He drops the smile and orders her to find out what he wants to know. So-bong says it’s nice that he’s being honest, but she asks why she has to go that far. He tells her that she’s already on his side, and that it’s too late for her to back out now.

In the car, Young-hoon tells Nam Shin-III to watch carefully, because this is what happens when he acts on his own. Nam Shin-III says that there would have been a huge accident if he hadn’t stopped the M-car, but Young-hoon says that if So-bong tells Jong-gil everything, then he, Shin, and Ro-ra will be in danger. He tells Nam Shin-III that humans make complicated decisions based on the situation, something that’s beyond Nam Shin-III, and tells him to just obey from now on.

Young-hoon sees Jong-gil leaving and goes inside to find So-bong looking glum. She sighs that she just refused enough money to change her life, and seeing Young-hoon’s face is making her regret it, ha. She asks why he’s so fiercely loyal to Shin, and he says simply that he likes working for Shin.

So-bong reports that she told Jong-gil that nothing happened, and that she’d continue spying on “Shin,” so she tells Young-hoon that he has to protect her. She sees Nam Shin-III getting out of the car, and he smiles at her cheerfully, making her wonder how she got fooled by him when he’s so different from Shin.

After being threatened by Young-hoon to tell him the truth about So-bong, Reporter Jo worries that she hasn’t heard from So-bong. She gets caught snooping around So-bong’s father’s gym by Robocop and Joint, who tell her that So-bong’s father disowned her.

Reporter Jo turns to leave, only to run into Dad, who throttles her and accuses her of being a bad influence on his daughter. She gasps that So-bong is working for Shin as his personal bodyguard, to repay his kindness, and Dad spits, “She’d never voluntarily repay anyone’s kindness!” Ha, he’s got a point.

She escapes by flipping Dad over her head. She gets a call from So-bong and peppers her with questions about whether she’s in trouble after Reporter Jo’s confessions. So-bong says that everything is settled with Young-hoon, and to act like nothing is wrong if Jong-gil calls her.

She hangs up, and thinks again about seeing Nam Shin-III’s robotic insides. It creeps her out, and she jumps ten feet when she unexpectedly runs into Nam Shin-III in the kitchen. He asks if she’s scared of him, and she denies it, but when he touches her, she jerks her hand back like she’s been scalded. Rather than being upset, Nam Shin-III says that it’s normal to feel unsettled or even repulsed by something that appears so human, but isn’t.

So-bong decides to leave, and she’s packing when Young-hoon comes to her room. He says he wanted to clarify that she can’t tell anyone about Nam Shin-III, not even her family or friends, and that he’ll blame her if anyone finds out.

He surprises her by thanking her for agreeing to keep their secret, and saying that he can finally sleep tonight because of her. After he leaves, she sighs that she can’t leave now.

During his TV interview, Jong-gil issues a public apology for the catastrophic test drive of the M-car. He says that safety and security are PK Motors’ top priorities, and obliquely blames Shin for not stopping the car from being hacked.

Chairman Nam watches the interview from home, with Nam Shin-III standing nearby contritely. Chairman Nam accuses him of running away instead of admitting his failure, but Young-hoon takes the blame and promises to make the next test drive a success. The chairman agrees, yelling that “Shin” will only make a mess of it again.

Young-hoon calls Ro-ra and tells her that the test drive failure has killed the chairman’s trust in Shin. She says she’ll check out the driverless car personally, then instructs Young-hoon not to let Nam Shin-III near the M-car until she arrives. Nam Shin-III wants to try tracing the hacking route, but Young-hoon tells him to stick with So-bong for now, since they can’t trust her yet.

Nam Shin-III obediently gets in his car, flashing So-bong an angelic smile that unnerves her. When they get to the company building, Young-hoon sends her into the conference room with Nam Shin-III in case they’re asked questions about the test drive.

Nam Shin-III apologizes to the board members for being careless and causing harm to the company. One board member complains that by running away, he made the company look irresponsible and caused their stock price to drop, but Young-hoon defends that he was just shocked and needed to rest.

Jong-gil speaks up to say that Shin is merely inexperienced, and that he’ll improve with time. Chairman Nam says they can’t wait indefinitely, and that Shin will be reassigned. He tells Shin/Nam Shin-III to focus on his wedding plans, which thrills Ye-na, but So-bong is horrified: “Marriage, to this thing?”

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Chairman Nam wants Ye-na to sign a prenuptial agreement, which she’s willing to do, but Jong-gil stops her, saying that they need to read it thoroughly. The chairman says he’s right, but adds ominously that if Jong-gil objects to the prenup, he’ll wonder if he’s after something.

Jong-gil and Ye-na leave, but they run into Aunt Ho-yeon, who drops a bottle of pills. Ho-yeon claims they’re hers, but Jong-gil looks suspicious.

So-bong complains to Young-hoon that Nam Shin-III will get caught if he gets married. Young-hoon says he’ll stay and gauge the situation, and tells So-bong to take Nam Shin-III home.

Jong-gil sits with his board member cronies, who can’t agree on whether Jong-gil should sign the prenup, which is designed to render Jong-gil powerless. One of them argues that Ye-na will marry Shin with or without her father’s permission, and Jong-gil roars in frustration.

Nam Shin-III watches So-bong closely as she drives, then he chirps that he looks just like the real Shin and isn’t at all scary. She stays painfully professional, at least until he refuses to go in the house without her since they share a secret.

Inside, he pops up right in her face, then plays the video of the fight where she was injured on the television followed by the x-ray of her broken leg. So-bong gets upset that he’s digging into her life, but Nam Shin-III just tells her that the steel rod in her leg makes her a cyborg. LOL.

He beams at having found something they have in common, but So-bong snaps at him for being so calm when she’s going nuts worried about being caught. She stomps to her room to pack, again, but as she’s sneaking out, Nam Shin-III startles her again. She hits the wall and hurts her shoulder, so Nam Shin-III rushes over to ask if she’s okay.

So-bong shoves him, which is when Ye-na finds them. So-bong apologizes to “Shin” for being too sensitive, and Nam Shin-III picks up her thread and snaps at her Shin-style for not taking a joke.

Ye-na wants to speak to Nam Shin-III in private, but he pulls away and says he’s staying with So-bong. Oops. So-bong makes “you screwed up” faces at him as he looks mystified, and Ye-na drags him away to his room.

She says she likes it here and suggests she move in after they’re married, and when Nam Shin-III says he won’t marry her, Ye-na replies that she just wants to be near him, even if his heart isn’t in it. Nam Shin-III keeps staring at the door, worried that So-bong is trying to sneak out again.

So-bong finally makes it out the front door. Her dad calls to ask if she’s really working for Shin, but she tells him that she’s on her way home. Dad thinks So-bong got fired again, but she says she left even though they begged her to stay.

Dad calls her a liar, since “Shin” was just seen near the gym and she wasn’t with him. He goes off on a rant, so So-bong hangs up. She looks across the street, and there’s Nam Shin-III, smiling at her happily. She crosses, and Nam Shin-III meets her in the middle and tells her, “You can’t go.”

He says it again when she tries to pass him, so she promises not to tell anyone about him or take Jong-gil’s calls anymore. He stops her a third time, asking her to please help him, and she snaps, “Stop acting like a person!”

She orders him to freeze and forbids him to follow her, then continues on across the street. Nam Shin-III stands in place obediently as the pedestrian traffic light goes red, and although So-bong sees him and looks guilty, she keeps going.

Nam Shin-III stands still as cars pass and people yell at him, as he was told. Eventually So-bong returns and yells at him, “Aren’t you scared? What if you die?” He says he’s not scared and won’t die die, so she asks what if he’s in another accident and people see that he’s not human. He says that’s why he needs her help.

He explains that he’s not supposed to shock or scare people like she was shocked and scared by him. He adds she was disgusted too, and So-bong looks ashamed. Nam Shin-III apologizes for upsetting her, but he adds that she knows him, which is why she can help him stop shocking people like he did to her.

She holds her locket as she thinks, reminded of the night he turned on the lights to help her find it in the pool, and when he saved her from the fire. She makes a decision, and calls her dad to tell him she’s not coming home. She shoves her suitcase at Nam Shin-III, which he takes eagerly, asking if she’ll really help him. So-bong says that he’s helped her, so she’s repaying her debt, but she’s out if things get complicated.

Smiling, Nam Shin-III quotes Young-hoon: “A human’s judgment is always complicated.” He starts to cross the street, but So-bong stops him, pointing out that the signal is red. Nam Shin-III just turns the signal green, startling So-bong, and as they walk together, Nam Shin-III says that he can find her anywhere with her phone’s GPS.

Young-hoon asks Ro-ra why she insists on going into the PK Motors building to check out the M-car when Nam Shin-III can do it more easily. Ro-ra reveals to Young-hoon that she installed a kill switch in Nam Shin-III, one he doesn’t know about, because if Shin wakes up, Nam Shin-III needs to disappear.

She says only she can access it, and that she’s keeping him from the driverless car in case he sees its kill switch and realizes that something similar is inside himself. Young-hoon worries that he’ll learn about his kill switch and be shocked, but Ro-ra says that won’t happen — after all, he’s just a robot. Young-hoon doesn’t seem too impressed with her answer.

After dark, he helps Ro-ra sneak into the PK Motors building, and she finds a malware program that someone planted that allowed the car to be hacked. She fixes the car’s kill switch so that it can be activated remotely in case of a future problem.

As they’re leaving, Young-hoon starts to tell Ro-ra about Shin’s engagement to Ye-na. They’re interrupted by Jong-gil, who demands to know what they’re doing. Ro-ra calls him a dog who’s been latched onto the company for three generations, and he chuckles that she cries a lot less than she used to.

He says it must be nice to be reunited with Shin, and promises not to tell the chairman. Ro-ra says she’s not scared of them anymore and promises to visit the chairman soon, and Jong-gil says they’ll see each other often once they’re in-laws. Ro-ra is horrified to hear that Chairman Nam plans to marry Shin to Jong-gil’s daughter.

Meanwhile, Ye-na is still waiting at the house for Nam Shin-III to return. She sees him walking back with So-bong’s suitcase, playfully keeping it away from her when she tries to pull it herself. Ye-na frowns and storms off.

In Ro-ra’s house in the Czech Republic, Snake finally finds the room Shin was kept in, but of course it’s empty. He reports to Toady that he hasn’t found anything, but in the garbage, he finds the hoodie Shin was wearing when he was hit by the truck, covered in his blood.

Toady tells Jong-gil that Snake found evidence of Shin, but Jong-gil snaps that it doesn’t matter, when his mother is waltzing in and out of the company headquarters. He sighs that he needs to manipulate her and stop the marriage.

So-bong removes the camera from the robot model and returns it to Nam Shin-III. She asks if he’s capable of eating, and he says he can, though he doesn’t need to. He shows her his battery, the watch-like apparatus he wears on his wrist, and she marvels that he’s really not human.

Suddenly she throws a punch at his face and finds it cool that he doesn’t even blink. She pokes him in the eye and pinches his cheek, but he just smiles and says it doesn’t hurt. So-bong asks why he held her hand and called her a liar, so he explains that his hand is like a lie detector, and that he winks if the person is lying.

Of course So-bong tests it out, grabbing his hand and telling him to ask her anything. He asks, “Did you watch me take off my clothes?” and calls her a liar when she says no. LOL, So-bong drops his hand and changes the subject. Nam Shin-III says he also has x-ray vision and scans her body, then grins that he’s kidding when she covers her chest.

She asks how much he costs, but he says “Mom” didn’t make him as a product to sell. So-bong says it’s strange hearing him call Ro-ra “Mom,” then heads to bed, and Nam Shin-III mutters, “But she’s Mom. Mom made me.”

Ro-ra is upset that Young-hoon didn’t tell her about Shin’s engagement to Ye-na. David heads off a fight by sending Young-hoon to visit Shin, and Ro-ra vows that she’ll stop this marriage no matter what.

Young-hoon sits by Shin’s bedside, remembering that Shin used to run away but he’d always find him. Once Shin had vowed that someday he’d run where Young-hoon couldn’t find him, and now Young-hoon asks if this was what he meant. He sighs and tells Shin to stop worrying him and wake up.

He gets a call from Ye-na, and agrees to meet with her. Nam Shin-III arrives at the same time, driven by So-bong, and Young-hoon can’t help but think about his kill switch. So-bong says that Ye-na asked Nam Shin-III to meet with her, and Young-hoon says they should go tell her there won’t be a wedding.

They go into the restaurant, and Young-hoon asks So-bong to wait outside the room. When Young-hoon and Nam Shin-III step inside, they find Chairman Nam, Ho-yeon, and Jong-gil also there. Chairman Nam asks Ye-na why she gathered them all here, so she passes him the prenuptial agreement and says she agrees to the terms: “Shin and I will get married.”

Jong-gil wants to speak to her privately, but she refuses, saying that she’ll marry Shin no matter what. Ho-yeon accuses her of being obsessed with Shin, but the chairman looks happy and tells Nam Shin-III to marry Ye-na right away.

Thrilled, Ye-na promises Nam Shin-III to be a good wife. He throws a “what do I do?” look at Young-hoon, who makes a gesture they previously agreed would mean to refuse no matter what. Nam Shin-III searches his database for a good way to reject a woman, finds several references to pretending you’re dating someone else, then scans the door to see So-bong eavesdropping on the other side. Oh noooo.

He thinks to himself that So-bong is the only woman who knows his secret and is willing to help him. He gets up and pulls her into the room, and right in front of everyone, he kisses her.

COMMENTS

Well, I was not expecting that! I certainly didn’t expect a kiss so soon, and I didn’t expect Nam Shin-III to make a leap from “avoid this marriage” to “I’ll pretend to date So-bong!” It’s actually not a bad plan, for one that Nam Shin-III had to come up with on the fly, but it’s hilarious that he took the drama route and made a spectacle out of it instead of just claiming to be dating her. Now they’ll have to keep up the charade, which should be a lot of fun to watch between her flailing in frustration and him just grinning at his brilliant plan.

At first I was annoyed by So-bong’s… well, her entire personality, but now I find her refreshingly realistic, and a perfect foil to Nam Shin-III’s over-the-top sweetness. She’s still annoying, but she’s also earnest and headstrong, determined to do what she feels she has to in order to survive. I’m so used to seeing dramas where the starry-eyed ingenue meets a cranky misanthrope and teaches him to be a nicer person, but here, the misanthrope is in a coma, and we’re left with a starry-eyed android and a girl who’s just trying to make her own justice in a harsh world. I like that neither our hero or heroine are typical characters — one is a robot who is just learning about the big world, and the other is a girl who could easily have been a Candy if not for her tendency to see everything as a personal insult.

I also found So-bong’s initial response to the fact that Nam Shin-III is an android to be realistic and understandable. She was horrified, even repulsed, at the fact that he appears so human yet isn’t even alive. What surprised me if Nam Shin-III’s reaction — I expected him to be upset, or to feel rejected by So-bong’s inability to see him as anything but a “thing.” But he’s actually pretty pragmatic about the fact that he’s not human, and he seems to understand that when people see him as an object, it’s not a personal rejection but just a natural emotional response. Still, it was cute when he knew he was making So-bong uncomfortable and tried to find common ground with her, calling her a cyborg since she’s got a steel rod in her leg.

I was particularly impressed with Nam Shin-III’s insight when he decided that So-bong was the right person to help him. Instead of avoiding her when she was shocked and scared of him, he realized that her reaction made her uniquely qualified to be the one to show him how to be more human. Since she’s felt the shock and disgust of discovering that he’s an android, she knows better than anyone how to advise Nam Shin-III on how to seem more human and avoid being caught. It shows that Nam Shin-III is capable of complex thought, and of finding a logical solution to an emotional problem. At least it worked with So-bong, and along with the fact that he’s helped her twice, convinced her to stay and help him pass as human. I love that she immediately started being fascinated by him instead of repulsed, and I can’t wait for Nam Shin-III’s human lessons — with a cranky teacher like So-bong, it’s going to be hilarious. And after that kiss, probably more than a little bit sexy.

Oh, this handsome robot! The kiss was quite unexpected! Everybody's expression in the room was priceless. I'm wondering what Young-hoon will say to this. HAHAHA.

Also with So-bong after the kiss, she might be starting to realise that she likes him when in fact her heart's beating several times when she's closed with robot. HAHAHAHA.

How can the mom be so mean? She said that NSIII must disappear without even feeling any remorse. I don't get it.
And Young Hoon is just so good. I love that, even though he doesn't show it much, he really cares for both Shin and NSIII.

Yes, something is wrong with her to be able to create him in the first place. It would be different if her son died when he was young and she missed but this is a real person.

I didn’t even think about that until your comment and my mouth dropped into a horrified ‘O’. I’m not even kidding, my jaw dropped when I realized what she did. She’s messed up in the first place to create a Robo child, but to later be so callous and willing to get rid of the Robo child is horrific. She’s insane, how could she feel no love and attachment forbid RoboShin? Like I treat my car better than she’s treating RoboShin

That scene got me thinking that maybe the mom is the person who's least capable of seeing NSIII as a real boy. Her foremost priority was always to create a facsimile of her son, a clone rather than an independent being. She's also more aware than anyone of exactly how NSIII works, nuts and bolts and all. Her buying into the illusion of his realness was because of an unfulfilled emotional need which can now be truly fulfilled by her real son. So it's no wonder she can't fully engage with him on an interpersonal level, the way everyone else does. Which of course is just all the sadder for our poor robot boy.

yea, you're right. she's been there throughout all the process of making him, so she knows that he's no human at all.
But man, I treat the reviewers I made for my exams better than she's treating NSIII. I don't burn my reviewers just because I passed that exam, but I conserve them because they've been so helpful during the process. I don't know if this makes sense, but it makes sense to me rn. Haha

Nam Shin 3 taking dramas for reference was hilarious. I would have enjoyed had the surprise kiss not happened ( I was in shock for a few minutes). Nam Shin 3's understanding of humans is so accurate that I love his brains (well, the technological version of it). Calling So Bong a cyborg was a smart move. Young-Hoon talking to Shin in coma showed that Shin maybe understood the value of Young Hoon although he never showed it.

Shinnamon™ (credit: @mindy) is too charming for words. I’m just realizing now I’ve had a lifelong love for the aliens and robots who move among us in disguise. Be it Klaatu, Data, the Brother from Another Planet, Starman—I am entranced by guileless humanoids.

My heart broke for Nam Shin III when his mom told Young-hoon that there is a kill switch inside him and that he won't get hurt because "he's just a robot." Poor Nam Shin III. :(

Also, one of the reasons I started watching this show is my tiny bit of hope for a bromance to happen. And thank God Young-hoon is not only there to serve us good looks and great skills at work, he is also serving us some bromance with Nam Shin and Nam-Shin III (Lee Jun-hyuk surely got me and my heart).

And although everyone has been saying this, I'll say it again: I love how funny and cute So-bong and Nam-Shin III's kiss scene at the end! Now that So-Bong stopped being a snitch (I kind of hated how she is on the last 4 hours of this show, but seeing her backstory made some sense to me and she IS adorable when she's with the robot so I can't help but root for her) and is actually becoming closer to Nam-Shin III, I'm actually getting sinked in to this ship.

This drama hurts me left and right.

He is a robot and is never gonna feel emotion for her. Granted it is a drama but still.

I love this drama so much but reality is that he is a robot after all. I still have hope though.

Also the secretary is so hot. Sigh, I swear this drama will be the death of me. Thank God I decided to watch it today and episodes are airing tonight and tomorrow.

This episode was good but I have some questions about it. Maybe anyone has opinions?

If the driverless car was done on the city, where are the dozens of cameras that would have caught his stunt? Not that government would have allowed that to happen on city streets. Some explanation was needed there.

I get it, the lonely robot in the middle of the street is cute, but why would he obey her when he is under the secretary's command? Her order was directly against his when he told the robot to stay by her side.

I can deal with the robot displaying what seems like emotions because I think he was programmed to do it, like how he is clingy to his creator and cheerful many times, but why would he be surprised by a kill switch? Why would he have any feelings about anything at all including his existence?

This show is easy to enjoy but I feel like to do it you can't think about it.

Driverless car: Nam Shin III has displayed the ability to hack systems like traffic lights and such, so he might have erased or altered whatever images were captured. And if not him, then Ro-ra could.

Street command: to me, that was a ploy to test So-bong. I don’t think she’s been given any voice command, so he just took hers literally to force her to return.

Kill switch: he wouldn’t think of a kill switch because he’s not all that self-aware (yet). Once he begins to question his existence, he would be surprised by it because he sees his manufacturer as his Mother. Like a child, he implicitly trusts her and would never believe she would hurt him, let alone kill him. So it would be a shock.

Car test - good explanation! I wish the writers had come up with that. :)
Street - You mean he could predict her reactions and knew she would come back so he wouldn't really be leaving her side and disrespecting YH's orders? Still he does leaves her, so I guess maybe but it feels like pushing for an explanation that fits.

Switch - Here I still don't get it. It all feels like too many human emotions for a robot. He knows his purpose, he doesn't need to question his existence, if he is becoming self aware that needs to be explained. Trust should be just a concept for him. Being reset should never led him to any idea of feelings. Being hurt physically or emotionally is also just an abstract concept for him.

#3 He has AI, supposedly the very advanced kind. He's programmed to learn and mimic humans. No human would want to find out that he can be disposed of easily at any point.

Or maybe Mom just knows her robot lore. A lot of robopocalypse books and movies start to go south when the AIs become self-aware and start making decisions that are contrary to what their creators want.

Yes, but he mimics humans for our benefit not to actually change something inside him. I guess this whole part of him being able to adapt will be way the writer will use to imply robot is in love. :)

He mimics humans by copying their thought process. The thing with AI is, they're built to learn things, and there's always a possibility that they'll learn something that wasn't intended by their creator. Look how he learns to be rude (closing the car door on Young-hoon). Rudeness isn't built into his system, but he learns it because it's part of being human. See this real life example of Microsoft's chatbot that learned to be a Hitler-loving racist: https://techcrunch.com/2016/03/24/microsoft-silences-its-new-a-i-bot-tay-after-twitter-users-teach-it-racism/

Shin and the chatbot don't really feel like being rude. But they learn actions that humans equate to rudeness.

It's not farfetched for Mom to assume that Shinammon will learn a certain level of independence and might start doing things she doesn't like but seems logical to him.

A sample dilemma is NSIII concluding that he's supposed to make Mom happy, which he can't do if he's "dead." So he might decide to disable his kill switch himself. Or, maybe NSIII will conclude that killing him instead of giving him plastic surgery is stupid, and he's programmed to be not stupid, so he'll disable the kill switch and run away with Young-hoon. XD

9

@lixie I love your questions though! I was just gonna laugh-watch it but now you got a couple of us thinking deeply about robots and human emotions.

You're right, I think the writer is going to use the unpredictability of AIs to generate conflict but also solve the NSIII problem in the end (at least, I hope they won't kill him off).

5

@mary Thanks for the chatbot story! Very funny. I agree, the learning process can make robot behavior hard to predict, it is funny,
they can do difficult things but miss easy concepts because they don't have the context for situations. I love when Shin3 does weird stuff because of that and best example so far was the kiss.
I would have liked so much more if S3 had become more independent and mom would have become scared for that, what if he thinks he's better for her than real Shin? Then she she would be sad but decide to activate this kill switch. Much better story. I like your idea very much too, it makes perfect sense for him to think that she need him, so he can't allow this silly switch. :)

1

In my view, regarding robot emotions, the show intends us to believe that you can create something as sophisticated as NSIII. And if you can build robots that have in their code self-preservation, learning capacity or prioritize bonds with humans, at some point they can be so complex that they will start having something similar to what we call emotions, a mix of priorities, urges, judgement and self-awareness. If you program your robot for self-preservation, of course the possibility of his existence ending will trigger some reactions in him.

Does he have any self preservation program? I don't remember that. About the humans, he doesn't prioritize a bond, he simply has orders to put their lives above his and try to save them.

I don't know, they didn't say he doesn't have it, so for me that could be a logic explanation. I imagine that he needs to have at least something basic in this area, in order to be able to interact safely with his environment without being destroyed. Also, whatever his goals are, he needs to exist in order to achieve it, so I assume he realizes the link between his priorities and self-preservation. NSIII is supposed to be advanced AI, so it makes sense for me that he is equipped with this sort of code or able to learn about the importance of this. But of course it all depends on what Mom programmed, and it could be possible that she programmed other priorities on top of survival for him. Anyway, this is just my interpretation so the story makes more sense to me.

Yes, I imagine he has enough so that he can act as a human and not get in trouble. But he does stand in the middle of the road if someone tells him to stop. Or he does that to make that person come back while knowing the cars would not hurt him. :)

So far, everyone is thinking about NS3's priorities, goals and feelings. But doesn't it depend (hugely) on Ro Ra's teachings and programs? So far, nothing has been told specifically or explicitly about what his main purpose is. We've seen that the memory of NS1 and NS2 was retained by NS3, like even when his body was upgraded, his mind only continued to develop with the real world interactions. Even before coming to Korea, NS3 didn't have much of experience with the outer world. Granted that he did great on that market trip and was already making complex decisions (like misleading Shin's assassin), but a lot of what he's learnt has come from his Mom- after all he's spent a lot of time with her as compared to anyone/anything else. Even though she's practical/heartless for installing a kill switch in NS3, she's also emotional as she programmed the first rule (hug the person if they cry). I think that NS3's emotions/attachment are also a result of interaction with Ro Ra, who probably (maybe unintentionally) made him as (too) similar to her human son (from her memory) as possible. If that really is the case, then NS3's longing for home, and sadness when he says "I'm Shin too, Mom", and even his delight at meeting her again (in the beginning of the episode) makes it clear that he's advanced beyond the 'normal' robot limitations of emotions. However, it's also true that Ro Ra is only a part of NS3's learning (growing) process and NS3 is capable of more than what she currently thinks- like the disaster mode.
This is more like wishful thinking on my part, but maybe NS3 will find a way to override or disable the kill switch when the genius doctor goes over the edge and tries to dispose off our Shinnamon Roll without a better reason than 'my human son is awake now'! But I'm afraid NS3 will sacrifice himself for his mom's happiness.

As for why he froze in the middle of the road, I think because that's what a petulant, adorable and innocent kid would do, right? 😅 maybe I missed my exit and completely veered off topic, but it's nice to think of the cutest Shinnamon Roll as just another unpredictable human with CNT parts that can't be sold at the junkyard 😁

All these questions and more may or may not be answered in future episodes.

They can gloss over the installation of malware all they want, but they fact that he can hack everything means he should have just taken back control of the car from the hacker and the accident wouldn't have happened. And, as you say, there's no way that trial would have been on a public road with other cars anyway.

I found the pedestrian crossing incident problematic for the same reasons you did. This show doesn't seem to know if Nam-shin is a Data, an Astro Boy or the worlds best spy.

Not that the first and second are mutually exclusive, but I think the final one is. I have no idea how he passes for Shin in very complex family situations when he then regresses to a child who barely knows how to tie his shoelaces.

So-bong’s reaction is intriguing precisely because it is the most human, and the most complicated. It doesn’t seem like she’s repulsed just because NS3 is an Android, but also because of her burgeoning feelings for Nam Shin, who is actually not Nam Shin. I think some of that disgust is towards herself, so when she falls hard, it’s going to be Angst, like Coffee Prince-level Angst. Can’t wait.

Aside from the romance, NS3’s self-actualization is the draw. The real battle will be against his Mom, who, I think, is the real villain here. She creates something, treats her creation as a human being, but never once sees him as human, as a being who should live freely. It’s a tragedy in the making. There’s so many things in play here, a little Frankenstein, a little Asimov, lots of philosophy, so it’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

I can't even imagine someone falling for a robot unless some form of delusion is going on but I'm interested where the story is going with that.

About the mom, I can't call her a villain, she created something that wasn't human and she was very aware of that. It's like people that raise a dog and treat them like a kid, does make the dog turn into human? The way she treated him was only to make her feel like a mother and not that HE, should or ever could, feel like a person, let alone a real son. Why should an object live freely or his owner ever imagine it?

I'm sorry but I don't really understand the comparison with raising a dog. We have one and we would never think of putting him down just because a previous dog we had came back to reclaim his spot. Our dog may not be human but he knows loyalty and affection, something that Shin certainly seem to have.

@Angeli the comparison with the dog was just to say that the way she raised him doesn't change what he is. A dog does not become capable of human emotions just because you, his owner, have them.
About replacing the robot, she seems to think it's necessary because she has to protect the real Shin, which is not only human but her real son. It's silly of course, she just has to change rorbot's face but anyway, drama is just being dramatic. The comparison between both dogs doesn't work because they ARE dogs, the comparison for the mom is between a real human and a machine. Every human would or should save the human. Not that she needs the switch of course but pretending she does, she makes the understandable choice.

@lixie I understand what you mean but I did take offense at seeing animals as less than humans because I certainly don't see them as such. The time I spent with them has certainly humanised them in my eyes and the time I've spent watching NS3 has also certainly humanised him in my eyes. But as show repeatedly points out he shouldn't trust humans because our choices are unpredictable. But I am definitely disappointed by Mum's choices and would like to think I wouldn't make the same one if faced with the same situation.

6

Also Shin3 doesn't know loyalty and affection, he programmed to show something that resembles human emotion. He is like that because his creator wanted him to feel like a human and be warm, probably because he was a substitute for her son. If he has any sort of emotion show has to explain us that.

I would like to argue that NS3's desire to help his "mother" is loyalty and affection. Perhaps he was programmed to do so just like how my culture has programmed me to show affection to family members I would have happily cast aside (because I don't want to embarass my parents). I don't know how robots will be able to develop emotions but I certainly learned mine from simple programming by my own parents and the community around me.

4

@Angeli you can't compare yourself to a machine. :) Babies don't know nothing about anything and still have emotions, it's just basic human nature. Machines don't. I know this week show might say he has adapted enough to have feelings. I'll still think it is crazy, but while not even the writer has gone so far, I'll keep to the theory he was just programmed to show what resembles emotion and for me that makes the story more interesting and reasonable.

1

@lixie: Of course you're right we have very basic human emotions that robots will probably or ultimately never learn. But I also think emotions like loyalty and affection are nurtured therefore programmed though maybe thats another debate :)

1

I agree she's not totally a Villain but if a person has made something it'll be precious to them if it has stayed with them for so long.
Nam shin 3 is not a human but Mom is a human it's really disheartening to hear that from her. killing him is not a actual thing that she should have thought about.
coming back to your example of pet dog I agree pet won't be a actual human kid but emotions of the the owner of pet are real. Right? If a old pet comes or they have a baby then also the owner won't think about killing the pet.
It's hard to digest what the mother has thought. No one will ever imagine those things to hear from a normal mother. The writer should have come with something else or may be he has good climax which we are not aware of yet.

The question is very interesting. They way I see it, Mom fabricated a sentient being which deserves respect to certain extent. I understand that for her NSIII might never take the place of her son, but it is still cruel to think of getting rid of him that way; this part I cannot understand. I would never do it with a pet, and I'm sure I would treasure any mechanic being that I would be able to build, haha!! Moreover if the machine calls me Mom. 👶
I would make an effort in order to protect my creation, rather than tossing it to the side at the first inconvenience.

Why is he sentient? When was that said? I know this show pretends he has feelings but they haven't been so bold as to actually say it, have they?

Well, he has senses, so he is sentient. He processes what he senses and makes decisions upon it. He has thought processes and priorities. And we are being told by the show that he is able to show preferences and urges due to his high complexity. This is a fact in this sci-fi world; later we can discuss if the robot is worth any empathy or not, but that's another thing and strongly dependent on personal preferences. There are people in this world that treat women worse than animals and there are others who suffer if they have to kill a bird, the range for empathy is very wide among humans.

6

@Coral Yes but he makes decisions like a computer does it, based on a program. he has goals to achieve, orders to obey. About having preferences I'm not so sure, when was that said? Did he ever actually say he liked or disliked anything other than being programmed to do it? Even when he seemed to actually want to explore the market I still thought it was a consequence of some personality trait that she would have given him. Not something that comes from a real choice. He doesn't make personal choices.

0

He is literally sentient in that he responds to stimuli in this environment.
Whether he's self-aware is a different issue but I don't expect the show to expend too much energy on that issue.

0

The issue is self-awareness. NS3 is an Android, yes, with programming, but he is so highly developed that he has shown an ability to reason independently of that programming, and a self-awareness as to who he is. He is becoming more sentient and with that, there will be a sense of self-preservation. His mother did not take into consideration the possibility that he may become self-aware—she only views him as an object to command and dispense with once his usefulness is through. It’s a real issue, ethics, and hints at the question of what it means to be human.

I don't think he has been able to reason independently either, he just found better solutions but he achieved the goal he was ordered. When he gets rebellious maybe. :)

I loved these episodes. And I find NSIII-So Bong's couple not only cute but also very fun. The scene where they were discovered by Ye Na was hilarious. 🤣
In my opinion, So Bong was so shocked and horrified at the beginning mainly because she had started to feel some attraction already, so it was a huge surprise for her that the object of her interest was, in fact, a machine. But she quickly forgot about that part and the shock turned into curiosity.
And NSIII was so sweet. I noticed how he let go of So Bong's hand when she said he was hurting her, although Mom told him not to do it before. She is clearly someone important for him now, and it showed when he saw her as the solution for his problem and decided to kiss her. In general, he's being very confident around So Bong, and I find it very cute. Well, I'm ready to see them doing the fake-dating thing, it's going to be fun and I'm dying to see NSIII's reaction when he discovers that she has some feelings for him.
In other order of things, Mom disappointed me so much with the kill-switch. The woman is too obsessed with her son, it is the only explanation for that. How couldn't she have developed some affection for her own creation, the robot that stayed 20 years with her? This is too sad, but I was not that much surprised since I was expecting from the beginning that Mom's preference for her real son would be one of the central conflicts here.
Anyway, I can't wait for next episode, I want to see my babies dating!!! 😍

How Nam Shin III can't be wrong when he chooses Eric Mun as a reference for kiss scene ?

For the mum, it's true she's very cold with the kill switch. But in the same time, he's not a person for her, for us it's a cute robot (and sexy :p) but she built it, she knows all the mechanisms behind every moves or reaction it has. She built it because she was really missing her son (it's kind of creepy) but she doesn't want that her project put in danger her son. Nam Shin III never was build to be with people other than her and the other guy.

Yeah, Mom is cold but the kill switch is the least of my problems with her. I understand it. My big issue is how insistent she is that Nam Shin III keep Shin's position when Shin didn't seem to want that position and it's as dangerous to him as it was to his father.

I think her response is due to guilt (although they may establish that in the next episode rather than this one). She sees her "real" son and suddenly realises she spent the last 20 years with a robot replica when she should have tried to get back to him instead.

The loveline is a no-go. There is no way So Bong will willingly let herself fall in love with a robot. I was wrong about Mom. She never thought of Nam Shin III as a son or else she would not bear to "kill" him. Not only was our Shinnamon roll not offended at So Bong being repulsed by him, he even thoughtfully explained the concept of uncanny valley. Regarding this whole kill switch thing .... since we're seeing that Nam Shin-III "learns" as he goes about his days posing as a human and we've also seen that he can hack into computer systems, I'm wondering if when he learns that words like "kill", "eliminate", etc. are bad, he'll hack into Mom's computers and render that kill switch function useless. I know it's a big if, because who knows if he'll in fact learn those definitions or not, but I still wonder.

Maybe you're right. Personally, I don't quite understand why Ro-Ra insisted that Nam Shin 3 shouldn't go near the M-Car and figure out it has a kill switch. Didn't Nam Shin 3 activate the kill switch himself in that Superman car-chase sequence? So he already knows about kill switches in general right?

I suppose he can't imagine his dear Mom installed one in him, and finding out WILL DESTROY him more than a kill switch (I'll be crying with Young-Hoon). But still ... he's already shown to act in ways that Mom didn't predict, like going into Disaster Mode.

But you're right in supposing that he can't imagine Mom would have installed one in him. He's not doing that type of "thinking" yet.
