Bright lights and whimsy in Familiar Wife’s first poster

The first poster is out for Familiar Wife, the upcoming tvN drama starring Ji Sung (Defendant) and Han Ji-min (Mistress), giving us a taste of the show’s bright and romantic feel. I’ve got my eye on this series because of the producers at the helm — writer Yang Hee-seung of bubbly rom-coms Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, Oh My Ghostess, and High School King of Savvy, along with PD Lee Sang-yub of Shopping King Louis — because their resumes suggest bright and feel-good romance, which I am always in the mood for.

Familiar Wife is touting itself as a “what if romance” between the leads; the copy on the poster reads, “The only ‘if’ of my lifetime.” Ji Sung plays an ordinary salaryman who’s been married to Han Ji-min for five years, and he’s able travel back and forth between the past and the present. At one point, a choice he makes in the past brings about a very different present, and the show builds on the idea of what-if as the story unfolds.

Below are pictures from the production’s script reading, which took place last month. In attendance were series leads Ji Sung and Han Ji-min, as well as supporting leads Jang Seung-jo (Money Flower) playing Ji Sung’s co-worker and friend, while Kang Hanna (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) will probably complicate matters as our hero’s first love. Vixx’s N (Tunnel) plays to his strengths as an oddball sort, although this time he’s an oddball with the topmost schooling and specs. Park Hee-bon (Just Between Lovers) plays Ji Sung’s younger sister, while Park Won-sang (Switch) keeps things tough and results-oriented. There are quite a few supporting players who are playing office colleagues, so I’m expecting some workplace hilarity a la High School King of Savvy.

Familiar Wife is set to follow What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim as tvN’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama beginning in August.

Oh, that is SO incredibly pretty!

I loved WFKBJ and HSKOS had its moments, and SKL is another favorite of mine, so this has me excited!

And Ji Sung and Kang Hanna? Count me in! Although I beg for the day that Kang Hanna headlines her own drama...

Y'know the leads usually travel back to fix a problem in the present. This is the first time I hear the lead traveling back to create a problem for himself. XD

This is exactly what I was thinking. Like, wait, what was he doing in the past before making that different choice?

Maybe he's a perfectionist with super bad luck.

Actually Ji-sung does look like a perfectionist 😄

He totally does! Especially with in that picture with that perfect red shirt that he purposely chose because he had to KNOW it brings out his colour, and that wristwatch when I'm a sucker for wrist that have been 'watched'( terrible pun, I know), with that expression, perfectly mastered small smile. And as if that's not enough, he had to carefully knit his fingers together in front of him with his elbows perfectly on the table!
Can you imagine?!

I don't think he's making a choice that creates a problem.... but maybe makes him rich? Like the realisation that shirts with blue stripes are going to be all the rage and he invests early?

The premise of the drama is quite interesting: actively being able to time-travel and change fate? It does sound like he makes an unreverseable change to his marriage that sparks off the alternate universe that he’s going to explore in this drama.

Out of all the leads, I’m a little cautious of Han Ji Min. I’ve not seen a first-lead-worthy performance from her yet due to her being carried by the male lead in the dramas she has done post 2010, whereas the others have been shown some acting prowess. I would love to be proven wrong though. The other leads are fine (Ji Sung!) and I would love to see the second leads continue to push their acting abilities (I think they’re good but just not first-lead material yet).

Although I like her and some of her roles a lot, I agree she tends to underact especially beside very strong male leads. But she was the only fantastic thing in Cain and Abel, so I know she has it in her.
Maybe her recent drama directors have all prefered her palying her roles milder and more feminine.

Do you mean you frequent this site and haven't seen Kill Me, Heal Me yet? :-)) I didn't actually love it as much as others seem to do, but it is a good watch, and it is worth it just to see Ji Sung's different personalities.

I only watched for Ji Sung in eyeliner. This has finally made me realise why I dropped the drama when the other personalities disappeared.

I'm a bad person.

2

@cloggie Ji Sung + eyeliner makes me a very bad person also. There's just something special about some men with eyeliner.

2

@egads, I did feel mildly guilty for being bored as soon as he was cured.

Not guilty enough to deal with the screaming.

2

:-)) Yes, I am not a fan of Hwang Jung-eum either, but I have learnt to ignore her when there are other inducements... Eyeliner Ji Sung was interesting, but Yo-na deserves her own drama :-)

The poster is absolutely gorgeous though I'm a bit wary with time travel. Dramas either get it right or mess it up into a tangled jumbo. Ji Sung is my main pull tho because he's astounding (I'm ignoring Entertainer)

Loved him in Entertainer and loved the show. I was happy how the downplayed the “otp” because of the age and since the chemistry was not there for it to really be an otp. Especially that second pair. Aside from the attempted romance, the drama was really good.

The drama was good but more so in a filler way rather than something remarkable. I felt like Ji Sung was wasted because they didn't really tap into his amazing potential. I guess the drama rubbed off wrong initially because he completely and utterly wowed me with his multiple personalities in KMHM where he bought the bare script to life. So it was disorientating to see him perform something mediocre I guess? I know it seems like harsh words but Ji Sung is the best! ^_^

This post makes me so fried chicken excited much more than any news about Mr. Sunshine!!

In addition to the writer and the PD, it includes such a solid supporting cast:
Park Hee-bon (one of my favorites who elevates every show she is in)
Kang Hana (loved her in Just Between Lovers)
Jang Seung-jo (was impressed watching him for the first time in Money Flower)
Lee You-Jin (fantastic stepping in last minute as the adorkable nerd in
Age of Youth 2
V (really enjoyed his character in Sassy Go Go)
Park Won-Sang (one of my favorite ajussi in Dramaland)
Lee Jung-Eun (loved her as Nam Joo-Hyuk's eomma in
WFKBJ

Everything about this drama just screams addiction to me, but now that the poster is out and Ji Sung and Han Ji Min look so naturally in love (look at how her chin just leans on his shoulder...gah), it’s official: my ride or die drama of the summer is here.

That's a pretty poster.

I love Ji Sung, and I really like the writer and PD. Please don't let me down, show.

Time travel is tricky for me, but I'm a total "What if" person so that resonates with me. I'm kind of getting Sliding Doors vibes (without the parallel universes) which I like.

I'll be watching this obsessively, if it's as good as I hope. I'm feeling optimistic. Ji Sung is fantastic in every single thing he does, so no doubt there. The writer/pd are really good, so that makes me feel very positive about this drama's potential. Maybe this will be a tiny bit like Go Back Couple. Married couple, then time travel, and consequences, so not really identical to that drama (which I loved) but similar themes. Can't wait!!!

Please let this be what I wanted 'Tomorrow With You' to be, but wasn't (I need to finish Tomorrow) which is something akin to 'The Time Traveler's Wife'. I just want someone to explore time travel and the emotional scars of leaving or being left behind. I mean 'Tomorrow' did that, but somewhere along, I got bored with it and I felt it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. Anyways I'm really looking forward to this and hope it does not disappoint me. The leads are solid in the movies I've seen them in so I hope for once they picked a drama I can watch from beginning to end.

As a rule I’m wary of time travel stories...but I’m also a Doctor Who fan so go figure! Anyway, I ADORE Ji Sung, I love his acting and think he’s one of the best kdrama actors that I’ve seen. The directors/PDs/writers all sound very promising. I haven’t seen many of the female leads works but I can see some chemistry. Ji Sung is coming off of the popular Defendant so expectations are high and I hope this delivers!

So is it just me or does it bother anyone else to watch something where someone is actually married in real life and yet romances another in the show? It just.. ugh! I wish I can enjoy it (gosh, Whisper would have been much better if weren't for that and the force romance in the first place) and this!! Like I'd love to watch this but!!! T-T

It does not bother me. As actors, it is their job to embody a character and live in another world. If they can separate what they are doing at work, in order to earn a paycheck to support their family, so can I.
