Things have certainly gotten a little strange. The MOST COMMENTED thread is Lee Jun-ki offered tvN legal-action drama Lawless Attorney, which is not even a RECAP. This thread has almost twice as many comments as, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food: Episodes 15-16 (Final), the next most active thread. To make matters even more interesting, it is a thread that was highjacked to discuss the NEWS articles subject matter. Beanies are using it to discuss LAWLESS LAWYER episodes in great detail. If you are following LAWLESS LAWYER, you might want to stop by and contribute.

I have to admit that I secretly like how we've hijacked other threads to discuss our beloved dramas when there's no official recap.

Probably as I've been hanging out in quite a few of those unofficial forums in the last couple of months, starting with Prison Playbook, then Should We Kiss First and finally Live.

If there's no official discussion spot, Beanies will make their own :-)

Actually, the fact that we can hijack a thread and fashion it into something that meets our drama discussing needs is a clear sign that this site is very well designed. It was designed to make our time here more fun and interactive.
I love this place to pieces!!

I agree - this site is very well designed. The ability to hijack threats makes it all the more alluring. It somehow makes the exchange on information and ideas more interesting. However, not all beanies may be aware a hijacked thread exists. So sometimes even beanies need to resort to a form of PPL. Admitting that makes me feel a little "dirty". DAM! you Subway Sandwich!

But it would be really nice if they could put up empty posts like:
"Lawless Lawyer Ep 14 Open Thread"
"Come and Hug Me Week 5 Open Thread"
So we wouldn't have to hijack, and so people would know where to look.

7

And then people will complain that there's no real content and we're just exploiting beanies .____.

Meh, no matter what one does or doesn't do, there will always be people who are unhappy with it. It's true in real life and doubly true in internet life. *shrug* Just keep on keeping on, DB staff.

As for me, I do enjoy the recaps and the weecaps, but I think the fanwall is awesome. Everyone keeps us up to date on the latest entertainment news, and reading the squeeing and ranting is fun. The only bad thing is that the enthusiasm of the beanies keeps making me watch more and more dramas that I wasn't intending to watch in the first place. I'm already watching too many, but now I want to add Come and Hug Me and Miss Hammurabi to the list!

It's pretty funny there is not even a Lawless Attorney official thread, like a eps 1- 8 post, no recap necessary. It would take someone a few minutes to create one? Yes, funny. If you get what I mean by funny.

Did I read Lixie's comment wrongly? Sorry if I did.

1

I don't know what she means. But the fact that it had 3 upvotes means some people really think DB has some secret hate for certain shows or actors .____.

It's so weird but also funny that people will think that way...

6

I do love a good conspiracy theory. Perhaps the DB Overlords are in cahoots with Judge Cha Moon-sook and don't want to give official channels for us to confer over Sang-pil and Jae-yi's plans.

Or maybe life has gotten in the way, and we should carry on as we have and hope things get better. (Option two needs more drama though. Maybe a spiteful mother-in-law, or an evil chaebol CEO)

11

@egads - It can NOT be a true "Korean" conspiracy theory or even a spiteful mother-in-law without the word MAKJANG! embedded in the description.

3

Is there a way we can understand what's going on, so the community can help? Noticed that things seemed to shift dramatically a while back: Content was deleted mid series. Webcasts stopped. Number of shows being recapped dropped. The recaps are more often than not shows that aren't airing in the US. News is sporadic. JB and GF only make rare appearances. (And Jae Rim is in a show and you're not fan-girling. At all ?!?!?!) If there's information that would provide clarity, I'm sure the community will respond with sustainable work-arounds. :-)

15

I upvoted your comment because I agree with what you said...

2

I laughed. It wasn't what I imagined when I wrote the post but it is by far the more amusing explanation.

1

I think Lixie is being sarcastic over the fact that we have to hijack random posts to discuss things because nothing is being posted, not even a general eps 1-8 post.

No, it was actually the opposite. Sorry, I forget English is not my first language and sometimes sarcasm doesn't translate very well. I meant not even LJK's, who is kind of king of oppas here, deserved a generic post like TrinPie said. But the conspiracy theory discussion was very funny. No sarcasm eheheh.

The fact is that there are just not enough threads to comment. Unless you happen to watch the shows being recapped, there are only open threads and what we watch sections to comment, aside from the ones written by fellow beanies (theme of the month).

Exactly. Depending on the episode number, the ending songs usually reflect the latest OST offering that was just released before that episode's broadcast. The music director took good care to cycle through all OST songs released throughout all 51 episodes, appropriately ending with Ji Chang Wook's "To Butterfly."

And now I'm tearing up again remembering how the finale ripped my heart into teeny-tiny pieces. Dangit. 😭

1

Ok, so it's not just me. I admit I haven't been very vigilant on reading lately, but the content seemed...lacking. There's no recaps, there's no casting news, only the 'guest beanies' are writing anything. Very weird. I hope things pick back up again, I really enjoyed this site for the various stuff it put out. I also hope there's no major problems with the people behind the scenes!

1

I totally agree! I found dramabeans after watching my first kdrama about 5 years ago I visited the site regularly, though, never commented before (I came SO close when Healer aired—SO good.) Now though there is rarely new content or recaps or news. Not even any podcasts from gf or jb or a quick post to explain what is going on. I miss how it used to be!

1

bah-doo.com writes many many live recaps for currently airing shows. Soompi is another place for in depth discussions. The My Ajusshi thread is still going strong two and a half weeks after the end of that drama.

Finally - I have found someone that is talking about this. What is going on with DB lately? Pretty much no recaps - is everything ok with the administrators? I wish they would at least do a post and let us know what's going on and when we could expect to see things return to normal. :(

10

Required fields are marked *

I think that is the most frustrating thing, the complete silence from the staff. I used to think they just needed time to iron out all the issues, and there were a few times I thought things were picking up again. But this has gone on for so long and things only look worse these past few weeks. There is no reason to check the site multiple times a day anymore.

15
8

Required fields are marked *

I noticed that as well. I discovered DB a couple of months before the new site was launched and it was my go to website for all k-drama recaps etc. I was checking it out nearly every day as there were so many updates but since the new page launched it all fizzled out...less and less and sometimes when a drama becomes a hit the recap of 1-6 episodes appears out of the blue. Made me think if the staff decreased that much that they cannot keep up with all the current dramas anymore.

Required fields are marked *

See, I don’t think the decline in content happened right after the update. It’s been more recent. Back in October/November I remember we had 8 shows or so being recapped at once. It was great, even though I was only (obsessively) following one of those shows. The site was SO active!

I do think they bit off more than they could chew with some of the updates and it’s now catching up to them. It confuses and worries me that Lollypip is the only one doing full recaps. Where are all of the other minions?

15

I think it's been more recent than that too. But I couldn't say for sure when it started. It really only dawned on me after 3 or 4 new and popular shows didn't have full recaps that something was going on, but now it's very noticeable how much the content has declined. It's really sad because this has been my go-to site for recaps for the last 3 years - ever since I started Korean drama.
And yes, it's the radio silence from the admin that is most concerning. I'm sure we would all be happy to be patient and wait if something serious is happening and they are working out the issues. Right now it feels like they just took their hands off and walked away.
Maybe some of the regular contributors know something that they could share and help us understand?

12

I've suspected that they're dealing with copyright issues. But to let the site "go to seed" is a non-optimal way to handle that. You'd think they'd want to keep traffic up and maintain the site's value. They worked so hard to build it.

3

Exactly, tesshan & kingsqueen. A lot of people are hanging in there waiting to hear from JB and GF what is going on.

0

@mindy's right, the site was booming late last year, but one thing struck me as strange at the time: the disappearance of HeadsNo2 and the end of the Sunday "Ratings Reports" posts at the end of October. The other weird thing was the short-lived shop, which I never tried but some beanies said they had problems buying from it. So, my conspiracy theories run along the lines of legal and economic issues too.

I have said before that we have no right to demand explanations since we get all this for free, but we have been patient and asked very nicely, but DB staff remain disconcertingly silent. It's not very professional behaviour, I must say.

4

Yes the real issue is the complete silence.

14

Required fields are marked *

Thanks for being real about this, it’s like some people are in willful denial about what’s happening to the site.

3

Required fields are marked *

I hate the silence too... I just remember a response in a post, and a very lacking one, just saying something like "we gave a bite that we couldn't chew".

It would be a lot better say "We are working too much/ Someone is sick/ Real life is calling us back/ We are no longer interested..."

I'm a fan of the site, but is weird no to talk about it. DB is no Lord Voldemort or something like that.

sooo interesting to read all these posts—I had a lot of real life stuff overwhelm me last year and I took a break from, well, a lot of my hobbies but primarily from dramas &visiting this site... but I visited the site a couple of days ago and it felt almost like coming back to a ghost town.

It seems like there are still a decent number of people here engaging with each other, so I'm guessing the lack of posts belies the actual amount of activity in the community but... idk there doesn't seem to be much in the way of news or recaps so I was wondering what was going on.

It's equally comforting and alarming that I—someone who hasn't been around for awhile—am not the only one who's in the dark about the state of things

As someone who has been following DB since 2009 – when this site was still fairly pretty new and the comments nowhere near the numbers we’ve seen – I’m disappointed that JB & GF have clearly decided they don’t need to address the issue of the tragically declining state of this community.

The comment Mary made some time back – in one of the Friday threads I think – only struck me as strange too. I personally felt it was pretty vague to be honest and her words seemed carefully chosen – like she was afraid to say too much and probably shouldn’t have said what she did – but I didn’t see the comment removed and was probably expecting too much anyway if I thought JB or GF would chime in.

If Mary or others feel offended by my comments - this isn’t my intention.

But I have witnessed a tremendous amount of collective patience and loyalty from so many in this community when DB could have very well been abandoned ages ago – just as it seems we’ve been.

At a point – a beanie starts to feel that the years of support they’ve put in doesn’t seem to matter at all.

I think it’s worth reminding that DB wouldn’t have been what it was in its heyday without you beanies. The fact that so many of us still gather here despite the Administrative Side having pretty much withdrawn their hands is a powerful testimony to that. Somehow – we still make it work. A community is the people – and that’s what DB has always been.

I feel like, in a way, DB has taken that for granted, and have abused your love for this place. That it would be too hard for many of you to just leave – that you would stick around no matter what – so it should be okay to leave you in the dark, right? They saw your persistence. Even if you questioned and felt anguished by their silence – you wouldn’t leave. You couldn’t. This place is your home. At least – that’s what you’ve made this place for me. Because you beanies are still here – they’ve decided it’s okay to prolong their answer.

No one asked me to – and I can’t speak for anyone but myself. But on behalf of DB who couldn’t at least do this one thing for you – I wanted to thank all you Beanies. I hope that you could keep enduring. And should our worst fear come to pass – that this community would be given up on for good – I want you to know it isn’t because you didn’t fight hard enough.

I hear your frustration, but I think we should be very careful of making assumptions about what's going on behind the scenes, and even more careful of making accusations.

I think most of us are confused, concerned, and disheartened by the sudden changes in DB and subsequent lack of communication about the changes. But as is often said in k-dramas, I figure they (JB and GF) must have their reasons. They may be having legal issues (though not necessarily about copyright) which prevent them from saying anything about what's going on. Or they may be going through some other crisis that they can't or don't want to talk about. I agree that a simple "hey, we're going through something right now, please hang tight" message would make a big difference, but I don't think it's right to assume that we've been abandoned just because we haven't received official word on the situation.

Personally, I think we owe them the benefit of the doubt based on all of the blood, sweat, tears, money, time, energy, love, and goodwill that they've poured into this site and community. They've never shown themselves to be the kind that would "abuse" our love for this site and take us for granted, nor to withdraw because they suddenly got too busy, disinterested, etc. Most likely, they're facing some major challenges (probably including financial), and the last thing they need is Beanies being angry with them (when we should be worried about them).

Let's keep the faith, be grateful for what we have, and try to stay positive!

Just to be clear on my end - I don't mean for my comments to sound disloyal or demanding whatsoever. The admins here have created this site as a work of love - we don't pay anything to access all the great content we've gotten over the years and I've been extremely grateful for everything they've done.
I don't even need to know details of what's going on - as I'm sure the majority of us feel. A simple response just acknowledging the absence and lack of updates would suffice. Anything like "Due to some issues we cannot discuss at the moment, DB will be temporarily experiencing some decrease in updates. We apologize for the disruption, but we appreciate your patience as we work this out for our beloved readers." Simple, no details that might violate anyone's privacy or legal orders, and acknowledges us.

**So, if you are out there and see this - please know I mean no disrespect at all. We've all just known and loved this site for so long and it's confusing and disappointing for us as long-time readers. We miss you! **

I think this comment is harsh, but also refreshing. I've only been a part of the community for a few months so it's still surprising to see how loyal, kind and supportive Beanies are. I agree that the overlords are taking this for granted, even though they most certainly have their reasons. still, the overwhelming majority of the vox populi here just wants them to acknowledge that there's a problem and I honestly don't think it's too much to ask.

As a fellow beanie who started prob around 2004-2005 I do feel the same that there should be some acknowledgement of what is going on. However, I do feel like javabeans and staff are probably under a gag order or not a in a position to discuss what is going on behind the scenes. She has never failed to update the community whether it was a personal health issue (i vaguely remember she was incapacitated for a while and couldn't update) or whether she was in a personal drama slump. I have faith that there is something greater happening in the background that they are fighting for and I hope the site returns to normal with regular recaps from girlfriday and javabeans.

Book 3 http://www.630book.la/shu/148918.html

Book 3 isn't fully completed yet but there are already 66 chapters up. And there will be a 4th book, a prequel I think.

3

Actually my Google Translate did a quite understandable translation from the pages linked by @zoeraindasherbenji :D

2

I'd like to clarify one point and apologise for the inaccurate info I gave.

According to one of the author Shi Dingrou's Weibo posts dated May 22, 2018, there is no Book 4. There was a prequel/Book 4 planned but after some reflection, she realised she didn't really know how to write historical fiction about foxes.. and that she thought a story she wrote about foxes in ancient settings wouldn't be any different from the Liao Zhai stories.

She says she's in the midst of wrapping up the third/final book and that there is a happy ending. The full book 3 should be published in the second half of 2018.

1

@zoeraindasherbenji,
Thank you for this info!
I'm hoping since it will be a little shorter, maybe some kind soul will translate it....!

0

@rukia you could try creating a thread in Novel Updates's Novel Pickup sub-forum.

I tried posting a request for translators to pick up the novel for translation there but for some reason, I can't post there.

https://forum.novelupdates.com/forums/novel-pickup-request.1019/

@rukia Shi Dingrou is based in Canada apparently so she prob speaks English fluently.

I'm thinking of asking her on Weibo/writing an email to her and asking her about the possibility of an official English translation.

You could also try asking her directly on Weibo. She seems nice and even interacts with fans online.

The pacing is good and the characters are interesting. I have a grief with something that seems like a bad set up, but I'm waiting to see how this is resolved (or not).
It is full of tropes, but I find them pretty amusing for the moment...

Happy Friday Beanies!

I realized I write very little in drama threads. If a drama thread has a lot of comments, I'm more than happy to just read and write nothing. Like in My Ajusshi thread, I can count my post with one hand even though I love that drama so much.

If a drama I like has few comments, I'd more likely write something. Not because I want to add to the comment count or page count which I find a hilarious exercise but because it's more manageable to read every single comment just to make sure mine isn't repetitive.

Sometimes, I post nonetheless because I just got to rave or rant about something. In this aspect, I find the fanwall quite useful.

LL is on hold. I like it but I don't love it as much as I thought I did. I'll wait and marathon it later if reviews are good.

I'm having a very hard time moving on from My Ahjussi, so it feels like a slump, cause my heart belongs to MA. But after a bit I usually end up watching something lighter and completely different, which is why I'm really loving Moonshine and Valentine, a new cdrama!😀

I’m watching 3 K dramas , 2 C dramas and various J dramas as subs are available. Still a big hole after Ajusshi and Live.
Try out Week for the crush of new shows was brutal, some not even getting 10 minutes of air time, Bah! Next ! No way !

I've always used the Dramabeans "Ratings" section to find great shows when current ones aren't interesting.

Still not watching anything that's currently on air (because I'm watching Nirvana in Fire) made me remember that this is what my drama-watching used to be like: binge one series until it's finished.

It definitely has it's pros and cons.

Downside: I've not got much to chat to Beanies about on the Fanwall
Upside: I know it's going to stay amazing until the end.

It's actually really relaxing to watch a drama without having that extra worry that it might go totally off the rails in next x episodes. Instead I can just concentrate on worrying if all the characters are going to make it to the end of 54 episodes in one piece!

Glad to hear you enjoy NiF. When you’re done with that, you may want to try Secret of the Three Kingdoms. Series is primarily about tacticians trying to out think the other.

Another series about smart people outsmarting one another?

I'll check that one out once I'm done with NiF

Actually, @johnb, I'll wait until all the episodes have aired and then you can tell me if it stays good until the end...

I have faith in the show, lol. The folks in the Sot3K drama are based, (loosely), on actual characters. I looked up the empress, Fu Shou. It didn’t end well for her in real life, not sure what the drama holds in store for her.

I'll wait it out too. I tried 3 episodes and didn't know if I could trust the show and commit to the end (My standards are probably too high after NIF, LOL).

@wishfultoki

"Secrets of the 3 kingdoms" is an ok watch to pass time. It's more of a "what if" story from the writer's point of view. It's entertaining but I'm not into any of the characters except for the empress played by Wan Qian.

Try "The Advisors Alliance." It's the same time period with familiar but more believable characters.
Neither one can top "Romance of the 3 Kingdoms' historical epicness but "The Advisors Alliance" would be the closest of the two.
Liu Tao plays Sima Yi's wife and she is just as good there as she is in "Nirvana on Fire."

1

Thank you @kiara! Liu Tao definitely made it to my list of actresses to look out for.

1

@kiara I'll check out The Advisors Alliance! I love Liu Tao in NiF

1

@wishfultoki
I love her in NIF too. She is my fav in historical series.
Her character's relationship with Sima Yi is one of the best thing. They are so believable as husband and wife.

@cloggie
I'm still at early part of the show but so far so good and it's a mix of history and some legend.

When I was watching Nirvana in Fire, I couldn't tear myself from the screen. I had to force myself to go to bed.

I made the mistake of starting NiF while I was watching Six Flying Dragons, I never went back to finish SFD.

I keep thinking that there may be some current dramas that I want to have a look at but no... it's the next ep of NiF every time

I am not into Chinese dramas either but Nirvana in Fire is the best of the best.
Honestly the first eps are confusing since there are so many characters introduced at the same time, the backstory is not easy either. But once you know what’s the matter you can’t stop watching.

Hey all! I'm so excited to finally start Pretty Noona. Can't wait for the sweetness. I'm also super excited for About Time. Lee Sang Yoon is my ultimate crush. I fell out of another sageuk. This time I stopped Grand Prince 6 episodes in despite my deep love for Yoon Shi Yoon. Something about court intrigue bogs me down after awhile. Did anyone else finish Waikiki. I loved those kids. It was such a fun show right till the end. I also finished Queen of Mystery 2. I'm so disappointed with this season. I wish it was a one off like most dramas are. Usually I want to know more of the story, but I'm kind of hoping this will just end. Just me?

I've been going through the backlist of recommended 2017 dramas that I didn't watched during 2017 and have started watching Strongest Deliveryman. Unfortunately, so far, the only character I'm invested in is the second male lead Oh Jin Gyu as I'm finding the other characters, especially the male lead, as not that likable. The male lead Choi Kang Soo is coming across as just too inflexible and sanctimonious. Hopefully these characters will improve.

Hi all,

I've been an avid Dramabeans follower for the last 6 years. While I welcome the change and efforts to create a more involved community, I find that Dramabeans has been lacking in posts for quite sometime now. I'm self-diagnosed with recap withdrawals because I used to read at least 2 recap/day. I also miss Gummimochi and HeadsNo2☹️. Does anyone else feel the same way or is it just me?

I have a lot of questions and theories in my head but I'll let DB answer them in time to come.

Meanwhile, in place of recaps, news update and extras, I am happy just to have a place to talk to someone about a drama. I don't participate in any other forums so this is my only outlet.

I’d like to hear your theories. I’m scratching my head because I just don’t understand why the staff can’t update us with what’s been going on.

I’ve been following DB for 9 years and it frankly breaks my heart seeing how everything changed...

Better not to write them here.

At one point, I was going to write a kdrama-type theory as to why it was so quiet. It included birth secrets and corporate shennanigans.

Then I reminded myself that these were real people and it probably wasn't be a funny thing to do.

Just to say you're not the only one with crazy theories @outofthisworld
