[Theme of the Month] Work, life, balance, and K-dramas

To this day, one of my favorite reader stories here on Dramabeans is the one of a drama fan who worked at a government office and sent her important boss on trumped-up appointments all day long… just so she could watch dramas at work. Back in the day, I’ll confess to calling in “sick” to catch the finale of a show I was desperately into because I didn’t want to spend all day distracted and fantasizing about the last episode until I could watch it later. But what’s a drama-addicted fan to do when there are real-life obligations (and obstacles) that cut in on drama-watching time?

Maybe you’ve made changes to your work because of dramas, or conversely, your work has changed how you see dramas. Perhaps a drama has shifted your idea of what a professional career is like, or even shaped the direction you’ve taken in yours.

How have dramas shaped, changed, or affected your working lives or careers?

I know you guys have stories, so lay ’em on me.

I remember reading this! I also remember @alert’s story about cockroaches and watching dramas. I haven’t done anything half as devious, so I’ll probably sit this one out. Happy writing, everyone!

Wait, it was rats!

Yeah I got nothing unless I stretch the theme to its breaking point. And if I get too philosophical I doubt it'll get a play.

Please tell me the rat story.

Although I admit I had this vision of her releasing rats at work so they'd all have to go home. Maybe that would work too?

all the stories were so interesting i loved the cute coupon one how dreamy & the rat story was hilarious but yes willing #sacrifices for the sake of drama

Yes, those were some amazing addiction stories. Coincidentally, I almost referenced a couple of them when I commented on your Going Troppo piece, because it reminded me of the incredible lengths we'll go to to feed our addiction.

Alert's rat story was truly remarkable and was declared the winner, but the one that I often think of is the one about the Beanie whose sister insisted on watching My Name is Kim Sam Soon...while she was in labor in the delivery room! They even gave the baby Samsoon as a middle name-- I wish we could get a follow up story on them.

And the important boss who was sent on trumped up appointments by his drama-addicted secretary was actually the prime minister!

LOL @ally-le, thanks for reminding me of those days haha..

... and 15 years later, I still cringe remembering those crazy time. How the hell did I do that?! #facepalm

Oh well, am definitely older and wiser now, but still not entirely obsessed-free from kdramas LOL.

I have to think that you may be the Beanie with the most seniority here! *bows low in the presence of greatness*

I think there were a few others who ‘ve been on DB longer than me, and still active. Some of the more “senior” beanies are now lurkers I think. Some even got their own websites on kdramas. Sometimes I do go back to old Dramabeans posts/ recaps and reread some comments to see who’s still here, so that I know I’m not the only one who got stuck here for years LOL.

Oh! I've read that Spill the Beans page - my fav and most memorable story is labchick's - carrying the laptop into the delivery room! As you have a child! *howls in laughter*

Not sure what I can add here, but I'll try~

oooooooomg I had completely forgotten how wonderful all those Spill The Beans stories are! Thanks for the walk down Memory Lane 😢 Javabeans, it's great to see you.
Good luck with the new topic, Beanies! I didn't discover kdrama until after my (verrrry) early retirement so I have no balance stories to share, lucky me.

I've switched over almost completely to live watching, specifically so as to limit myself to 1-2 episodes per night. Back in the marathon days, the cliffhangers would keep me going well into the night, and sometimes the morning, making work difficult the next day.

Sadly, this is not interesting enough to make a post about. So I'm leaving a comment.

@javabeans @amilia Hi JB and Amilia! Good to see you delurk 😍

I wish I had a dramatic work-life balance with addiction story, when I was totally addicted. Those were the days when all else paled in significance compared to getting to watch that next episode ... raw... then subbed ... then re-watched ... and in between to read comments / start a comment / reply to comments on DB all day long!!! I admit it was just as much to DB and to the community as it was to the show, that I was addicted. There is so much warmth and companionship 😚 here for the kdrama viewer!

Is it just a sign of 're-growing up' or growing old that RL gets more priority in the end and dramas get relegated to 'free-time' or 'me-time'?

I don't know whether to be happy or sad that I'm more 'reasonable' in my drama watching now. It was a slow shift from being a crazy, stuck-to-a-screen working person who had fevered thoughts of episodes going on in my mind for hours and even day-dreamed meeting k-actors.

Still I look back on those days as 'good' ... not necessarily healthy, but lots of fun. It's nice to be 'free' from an addiction (maybe a milder form of one, compared to some Spill the Beans stories!), but it's nice to have known the joy of what it was like to have been super crazy about something and with good company to share it. 😊 😇 😃

Dear @javabeans, nice to hear from you! I do appreciate these "Theme of the Month" writing opportunities for beanies, but I feel like we have been doing most of the sharing lately. It would be nice to read something by DB staff too. Actually, just a short update on the situation and future direction for the site would be welcome in view of the dramatic decline in recaps and news posts in the last 6 months. Many beanies are confused and worried, and yet still trust that you must have good reasons for remaining silent. I wish you would realise how faithful your readers are. Thank you and this is by no means a demand for an explanation, just a plea from a concerned reader.

That's very well said. We love this website, so we can be patient if the recappers and overlords don't have a lot of time right now. We'd love a little update on whatever is happening behind the scenes. The beauty of Dramabeans is the community, and we'll keep the website thriving until problems are solved.

Being a normally quiet beanie I may actually chime in on this theme of the month, but mostly I wanted to say how much I love reading the recaps on this site, without which (and let me stress this!) I would not be able to fully appreciate the shows.
The recaps give me cultural and social context as well as more detailed information I need to get the nuance sometimes missing in subtitles.
Dramabeans recaps actually led me to sign up for paid sites (for example Viki, Dramafever and Netflix), meaning these companies gained a customer they would otherwise not have had.
Whatever is going on, I will remain a loyal beanie :) You have given me so much joy and an increased appreciation for another culture. If we beanies can help in any way, please let us know!
Hwaiting!
Bettina

+1000. I KNOW that without Dramabeans excellent recaps I am missing at least half of the sub-text on any given drama. I appreciate this site so much! (if you want to add up the revenue dollars just from me....6 week trip to Korea, all my grocery shopping at Hmart, all my subscription channels, and that doesn't even count my Bigbang cd's, etc, you can!)

I just wanted to echo the comments above and say that it's really nice to see JB's name again. I've been hibernating for the past few months (real life just got too busy, and I haven't had time to watch any new dramas), but I still check DB every so often and have been sad/worried to see the lack of updates. I guess I just really miss the banter between JB and GF and the old days when they used to update us on what was going on, even for things like site maintenance troubles. I really feel that it was that kind of stuff that made DB special, because as a reader it felt like I was part of a community even if I didn't comment often.

Having said that, I've started to come up with theories on what JB and GF are busy doing. My current favorite theory is that they are busy writing a korean drama for Netflix (because we all know Netflix is eager to buy Korean dramas, and who better to write one than JB and GF??). It will have all our favorite tropes, including the Truck of Doom. They will be like the next Hong sisters, writing dramas that subvert conventional tropes because they are the ultimate drama fans themselves. And fellow Beanie writers have joined the team, which is why there are not a lot of post updates from them, either. I really want this to be true, so I'm putting this out into the universe!! :)

Anyway, I also wanted to say how touching it is to see how understanding and patient all the fellow Beanies are with the lack of updates on the site. Makes me glad that I ended up joining a community like this, even though I am an infrequent commenter myself! Hope everyone on the DB team is doing well.

@swoosiederkins What a lovely theory that covers everyone who's 'missing'. I'd love it to be true and to have a real DB Drama made and to be able to watch it!!! 😍 😍 😍 And what's more, to be able to comment on it here!!! 😁 😂 😃

Has the site been sold? Did the @javabeans handle get sold as part of the site?

This is such an odd post. Even more so given the sentiments/concerns expressed by fairly sizeable number of people. Admittedly, I'm basing this more on impression, but it doesn't jibe with the character of the people I thought ran this site. "Beanie" content is cool (I guess,) but the bread-and-butter of this site is the recaps.

So, to whomever is actually running this site, if you're going to run it on the back of free labor, let that free labor do some recaps. Please and thank you.

I'm not going to write an article, but Misaeng did have a profound affect on me. I had just graduated college when it aired and I felt a bit like Jang Geu-rae floundering about trying to get a job and finding my place in the world.

For me, I watched Misaeng at a time that I was about to give up on my current job as it was getting monotonous and the politicking was getting too tiring. As corny as this may sound, watching Manager Oh gave me strength and another perspective on work. I related to his character so much, especially with how he stood up for his team and his values.

I may not comment as much as I used too (due to real life), but I’ve been a loyal reader since ages ago, and I echoed the concerns of other beanies too. I hope you guys are healthy and well, and whatever the problem is with the site, just know that we’re still here. It definitely feels strange with the abrupt changes and lack of updates from you guys, but I sincerely hope you are okay. Let us beanies know, perhaps we could work something out to help DB.
