Are You Human Too: Episodes 15-16

Nam Shin-III may be just as confused about his new primary rule as anyone else, but he sets about following it with an unmistakeable fierceness. Unfortunately, the timing is terrible, as he needs to focus on his role as Shin now more than ever. But So-bong learns a terrible truth about the plans for his future, and she’s forced to make a decision that could change everything, and might even separate them forever.

EPISODE 15 RECAP

Nam Shin-III tells us that his mom (Ro-ra) was the first human he ever saw, and his primary rule — to hug someone who’s crying — was for her. But he replaced the number one rule for So-bong: to protect her at all costs. He wonders why the most important rule was suddenly changed.

He thinks back on his interactions with So-bong and makes some deductions. First, he’s become accustomed to her pattern of extreme actions. Second, his algorithm adapted when he became her slave. And third, their excessive skinship fostered a sense of closeness.

Still, he can’t quite understand what it is about So-bong that caused so much change.

He thinks all this in the split second after pushing Ye-na to the ground, and So-bong recovers by telling him to help her back up. As a curious crowd gathers, So-bong growls for them to make it look like a lovers’ quarrel.

In the car, So-bong suggests that Nam Shin-III apologize to Ye-na for pushing her, but Ye-na snaps that she doesn’t want an apology from a robot. In Nam Shin-III’s defense, So-bong points out that Ye-na kicked her first. She says that Ye-na needs Nam Shin-III until Shin wakes up, so she shouldn’t upset him or he’ll quit helping them.

In his car a short distance away, Snake watches the trio drive off and makes a phone call.

When Chairman Nam shows up at the columbarium, Ro-ra tries to leave, snarling to Young-hoon that she came to see him, not the old man. She stops at the sound of Jong-gil’s voice coming from Chairman Nam’s recording pen, saying that Chairman Nam isn’t qualified to be in charge of PK Motors anymore and should be sent away for “us” to get a chance.

Chairman Nam tells Ro-ra that her son isn’t included in Jong-gil’s “us,” and that they may hate each other, but they have a common enemy. He asks how it feels to see her son again, Ro-ra reminds him that he’s the one who kept her son from her.

Chairman Nam says that Shin is suddenly showing passion after years of apathy, like he’s a different person since seeing her again. He attributes the change to her strong blood, but she tells him not to insult Jung-woo, who wasn’t as weak as his father thought. Chairman Nam asserts that Jung-woo died because he was weak, and invites Ro-ra to join the company before Jong-gil takes what belongs to Shin.

Scoffing, Ro-ra asks if he’s missed her after being betrayed by Jong-gil. Chairman Nam says that time changes people, but Ro-ra denies having changed, and she says she’ll never do what he wants. Chairman Nam tells her not to get emotional, and he tasks Young-hoon with persuading her to accept his offer.

He gets up to leave, and Ro-ra yells after him that he can’t control her. She tells Young-hoon that Nam Shin-III needs to be more careful with his behavior or Chairman Nam will uncover their plan, and Young-hoon says that luckily, Chairman Nam sees the change in “Shin” as a good thing for now.

Nam Shin-III still looks befuddled by his priority shift when they drop off Ye-na. So-bong asks why he came to her defense so aggressively, but he avoids answering. He keeps looking at her on the drive home, and she warns him that she won’t let it go. Nam Shin-III says he’s not sure why he did it, but So-bong won’t accept that answer, worried for her job.

But she still thanks him, and apologizes for Ye-na saying he’s not human as if being human is a big deal. Then she grins and says she’s pretty cool, and Nam Shin-III nods happily. He goes into Shin-mode to answer a call from Chairman Nam, who calls him home immediately.

Snake reports to Jong-gil that “Shin” seems closer to his bodyguard than to Ye-na, and he wonders if So-bong lied when she said she saw another Shin, then later retracted it. If she did lie, Snake thinks there might be another Nam Shin, but Jong-gil says there’s no proof.

Chairman Nam asks Nam Shin-III if he wants the company, and Nam Shin-III says he does if it protects his position. Chairman Nam wonders if that’s his greed or someone else’s, then mentions that “Shin” has changed since reuniting with his mother. He says he likes this new Shin better than the old one, but if the change wasn’t his own will, he thinks that makes the new Shin a fake.

Nam Shin-III says simply that he’s the Shin from the present, not the past, and that he made his own decision to change. Satisfied, Chairman Nam decides to start the process to have “Shin” succeed him, but he lies and says that Ro-ra told him today to give the position to Young-hoon.

Later, Nam Shin-III projects the conversation onto the television for Young-hoon and So-bong to see. The chairman had continued that he originally chose Young-hoon because unlike other young people, he knew his place. He’d warned Nam Shin-III to keep Young-hoon close so he doesn’t become like Jong-gil.

So-bong sees Young-hoon getting upset and tells Nam Shin-III to turn it off, but Young-hoon just says this is a good thing so they need to be careful. He tells Nam Shin-III to assemble the M-car team, and he’ll arrange a meeting for tomorrow.

So-bong heads to bed, and Nam Shin-III finds Young-hoon in his office. He says that most humans would be angry if the chairman suspected them, but Young-hoon says he’ll handle his own emotions and tells Nam Shin-III to leave.

Nam Shin-III asks why people don’t understand that Young-hoon isn’t interested in Shin’s position. Young-hoon warns him not to cross the line and to focus on his duty — protecting Shin’s place. Nam Shin-III says that he knows Young-hoon is angry and upset, and that since he doesn’t have complicated feelings, he can listen to Young-hoon any time he needs a friendly ear.

At the meeting in the morning, the new group leader, Chang-jo, nearly gets called out by Nam Shin-III for lying that he’s glad to see him again, ha. Nam Shin-III says that he’ll try to make the team actually glad to see him, but they’re not impressed by his technological knowledge and mock him in the chat window on their computers.

Unfortunately for them, Nam Shin-III is remotely wired into their computers, and he sees their barbs and cheerfully refutes each one. HA, the whole team turns a little green. When they ask how he knew what they were saying, he says he’s a brand-new Shin so they should stay on their toes.

Jong-gil finds Young-hoon in the hallway and sneers that he must be happy that things are going so well, and Young-hoon says he’s just doing his job. Jong-gil asks if it’s true that Chairman Nam asked him to be his grandson. Young-hoon says the chairman doesn’t say affectionate things, but Jong-gil says he will soon, “Because that’s how he won me over.”

He warns Young-hoon that the chairman can be cold, then warm, going back and forth while training him to be a loyal dog. Young-hoon retorts that Jong-gil may think of himself as a dog, but he doesn’t. Jong-gil says they have a lot in common, plucked from an orphanage as PK’s sponsorship recipient, but Young-hoon walks away.

He reports to Chairman Nam that “Shin” has gone back to work, planning to start up the M-car team again, and that he’s also complying with wedding plans. He says firmly that he won’t be like Jong-gil, objecting to the idea that he’ll be greedy just because he’s an orphan who got a scholarship.

He adds that he doesn’t need any other spot but the one next to Shin, and asks him to stop making offensive comparisons. He tells Chairman Nam that he seemed warm when he asked him to call him “Grandpa,” but that he’ll always be the chairman to him.

So-bong accompanies Nam Shin-III and Ye-na to the bridal shop, where she tries to take a picture of a particularly pretty wedding dress. Ye-na and the shopkeeper complain that some people are too poor and ignorant to know better. Nam Shin-III notices how embarrassed So-bong is feeling, and when Ye-na asks which dress she should try on, he picks the dress So-bong liked.

While Ye-na is changing, So-bong coaches Nam Shin-III on how to react when he sees her in the dress. He does a decent job of acting pleased when he sees Ye-na, at least for those who don’t know he’s totally faking it.

Ye-na sends the shop girls away and asks for a picture so she can show Shin, as if the “no pictures” rule doesn’t apply to her. The shopkeeper comes back and yells at So-bong, insulting her for not behaving more like her betters.

Ye-na whines that So-bong insisted, but Nam Shin-III tells the shopkeeper that he told her to take pictures, asking if the shopkeepers nasty comments were really for him. She looks horrified and says he can take as many pictures as he wants. He poses for a picture with Ye-na, holding her close and looking deep into her eyes… and warning her not to mess with So-bong again.

From across the street, Snake watches as Ye-na accuses Nam Shin-III and So-bong of ganging up on her. She leaves them to get home on their own, and So-bong has Nam Shin-III call a taxi so they can catch up to Ye-na. He just grins, “I don’t wanna,” and starts walking, hee.

So-bong agrees to walk for a few minutes, and when she sees a pair of beautiful women checking out Nam Shin-III, she marvels that Nam Shin-III didn’t even notice them. Nam Shin-III tells her that she’s as pretty as those women, then projects an image of her wearing the wedding dress in a shop window.

He does admit that he made her taller, thinner, and bustier, and she yells at him to take the picture down. But he says to look objectively and she’ll see that she’s very pretty by human standards. Snake catches up just as Nam Shin-III changes the picture back to the shop’s ad, and he looks very confused.

Word of Nam Shin-III pushing Ye-na gets back to Ro-ra, so she asks So-bong if it’s true. So-bong tells Ro-ra about Ye-na’s mistreatment of Nam Shin-III, which gets David’s back up, and Young-hoon tells her to treat Nam Shin-III like Shin even when they’re alone. Ye-na snaps that Nam Shin-III only cares about So-bong, but Nam Shin-III tells her again not to mistreat So-bong or anyone else.

Ro-ra asks So-bong accusingly what she did to Nam Shin-III, and Nam Shin-III jumps to So-bong’s defense. Ro-ra wants to know why Nam Shin-III is creating new rules overriding hers, but she’s interrupted by a loud beeping and Ye-na’s shrill cry: “Oppa!”

They all run into Shin’s room, where the doctor tells them that Shin had a sharp drop in blood pressure, but he’s stable again. Nam Shin-III watches as Ro-ra hovers over Shin, then he lets So-bong pull him away. She leads him to the car with a smile, which he tentatively returns.

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Later, So-bong finds Nam Shin-III telling Chingu, his vacuum friend, that Mom cried today but he couldn’t hug her. He explains that So-bong said he should only comfort a person who wants it, and Mom would rather be with human Shin. He introduces So-bong to Chingu, and So-bong puts them both to work cleaning her room.

She says that Ro-ra was mean to dump him here and only cares about Shin, but Nam Shin-III says that Shin is her son. So-bong pouts that Nam Shin-III is her son too, and she tells Nam Shin-III to rebel like human kids do if Ro-ra ignores him. But he pities Shin, who didn’t have a mom for all the years that Nam Shin-III had her.

After making friends with Chingu, So-bong asks where Nam Shin-III lived before. They go outside, where he shows her pictures of his Czech home using a projector. He tells her that Ro-ra was his creator, friend, and mother, and when she asks if he’s upset to lose her to Shin, he says he doesn’t know what “upset” feels like.

So-bong shyly asks Nam Shin-III to project the picture of her in the wedding dress. She says she wishes she looked that nice every day, and Nam Shin-III projects a series of pictures of herself as he sees her. He says she’s the “ideal woman” that humans talk about, and she tells him he’s the best slave ever.

Nam Shin-III says she’s the best master ever, then projects a video of her yelling at him right after he kissed her. He stops her from covering the lens with her hand, and almost shyly, he asks, “If I were human, would you have gotten that angry at me for kissing you?” She’s too stunned to answer, and Nam Shin-III drops her hand, remembering she hates skinship with him.

So-bong gets a call to meet with Jong-gil, and this time Nam Shin-III is almost frantic to go along with her, insisting he has to protect her. She says gently that that it only counts if the person wants to be protected, and after she goes, Nam Shin-III notices that she left her mother’s locket behind.

Jong-gil sends a car for So-bong, with Snake driving. She seems unnerved by him, and grows even more nervous when she realizes she doesn’t have her locket. Snake takes her to an abandoned building and tells her Jong-gil is upstairs, giving her an evil stare until she gets out of the car.

He’d shown Jong-gil pictures of Nam Shin-III projecting her photo in the store window, and Toady had checked with the store and discovered that their ad screens were interrupted by an unknown electromagnetic wave. Snake had been convinced it had something to do with Nam Shin-III and So-bong.

When she arrives, Jong-gil asks So-bong to find out where Ro-ra lives. She asks him why, but he says her job is to obey, not ask questions. He points out that she hasn’t given him anything useful on Shin, and says that if it keeps happening, he’ll assume she’s doing it on purpose.

He says thoughtfully that it probably doesn’t matter to her who pays her, but she says she’ll get some good information and earn his trust. But she warns him not to call her out like this again or who knows whom she’ll betray.

On her way back out, with Snake sneering at her, So-bong turns off her phone when Nam Shin-III tries to call her. She heads home on foot, and soon detects a hooded figure following her. She breaks into a run and turns a corner, running smack into Reporter Jo.

They both scream bloody murder, and the hooded man walks right past them. Reporter Jo is covered in flour, and she’s being chased by a group of teenage girls who are angry because she wrote a negative article about their idol oppas.

They go to a pojangmacha, and So-bong says that she thinks Jong-gil suspects her. Reporter Jo isn’t surprised considering how close she and Nam Shin-III are, and she tells So-bong to make an excuse and quit. So-bong thinks sadly of her promise to Nam Shin-III to protect him, and she says it’s not that easy.

When he can’t reach So-bong, Nam Shin-III takes her locket to Dad at his gym. He suddenly gets a signal when she turns her phone back on, but Dad stops him from leaving. He asks who Nam Shin-III is to go after So-bong so late at night, and tells him to come inside. Dad breaks out the snacks and soju, and demands to know what kind of relationship Nam Shin-III has with his daughter.

Nam Shin-III denies being in any sort of romantic relationship, since that’s something only two humans can do. He says he’s not human, and Dad assumes he means he’s too high-class to be considered on So-bong’s level. He slurs that he’s not a gold-digger and wouldn’t take money if Nam Shin-III gave it to him, but Nam Shin-III grabs his hand then calls him a liar.

Dad gets weepy and says it’s true, because So-bong’s fighting career was ended over money, and she ended up with a steel rod in her leg. He sobs that it wouldn’t have happened if he were a chaebol, and he passes out with his head in Nam Shin-III’s lap. Young-hoon calls Nam Shin-III to ask where he is, and he says he’s with So-bong’s father and can’t come home now.

Chairman Nam promises never to treat Young-hoon like Jong-gil, or ask him to call him “Grandpa.” He tells Young-hoon to tell the reporters the date is correct, and Young-hoon figures out what he means when he gets a call asking about the wedding date.

Jong-gil is unhappy that they chose a date without consulting him, though he hides it and says that “Shin” should marry, settle down, and work on the driverless M-car. He says he knows of someone who can help lead the team, but Ro-ra walks in and says that Chairman Nam promised the position to her.

In private, Young-hoon thanks Ro-ra for taking the job, which will help Nam Shin-III now that he’ll be at the company more often. Young-hoon asks if she really plans to use Nam Shin-III’s kill switch, and though Ro-ra hopes it won’t happen soon, she says it’s inevitable once Shin wakes.

So-bong is at the company, having decided to take Reporter Jo’s advice and quit. But she overhears Ro-ra and Young-hoon discussing the kill switch, and she realizes that they’re basically planning Nam Shin-III’s death.

She calls Reporter Jo, who says she’s at the gym. So-bong heads there and finds Nam Shin-III, still sitting with Dad’s head in his lap and surrounded by Joint, Robocop, and Reporter Jo.

She shakes Dad to wake him, but Nam Shin-III says to let him sleep. Looking at his sunny smile, So-bong thinks of the kill switch and yells at him to get up. She yanks him to his feet and out the door, still yelling at him for letting Dad sleep in his lap all night and for coming here in the first place.

Nam Shin-III says he was looking for her since he couldn’t trace her last night, to obey his “protect So-bong” rule. She tells him again to get rid of the rule, but he just takes her bag to carry, like a good slave. So-bong grabs the bag back and tells him that he’s free, and not to follow her orders anymore.

She says he’s not her slave, or anyone else’s anymore. She tells him to make his own decisions and use his own judgment, but he says eh has to pretend to be Shin. So-bong says, “You’re not Shin, you’re a totally different entity!” When he still looks confused, she says she’s quitting her job as his bodyguard, thanks him with a bow, and walks away.

Nam Shin-III narrates, “Now that I’ve analyzed why I developed a rule for her. She is the only person who sees me for what I am.” He follows So-bong and stops her from leaving.

COMMENTS

Awww, I understand why So-bong is pushing Nam Shin-III away, but how can she not feel like she’s kicking a puppy? Luckily he figured out why he made a rule just for her and gave it top priority, and although he may not realize it, he’s behaving just like a real human would. Human beings fall for the person who sees them for who they are and cares for them anyway, and unlike the other people in his life, So-bong knows he’s an android but still treats him like a person who deserves to be free and make their own decisions.

I’m so proud of So-bong, and how her attitude about Nam Shin-III’s alternative humanity has changed. Not long ago, she was saying even worse things about his not being human than Ye-na has said, even calling him disgusting. Now she’s apologizing for Ye-na’s slurs and grumbling about Nam Shin-III’s mistreatment, and she seemed genuinely upset when Ye-na made Nam Shin-III stand in a corner like an object, and how she removed his power source just to prove he wasn’t human. So-bong’s apology on behalf of all humans was the sweetest thing, and she’s even trying to set Nam Shin-III free to save him from the people who should care about him but plan to destroy him. She doesn’t forget that he’s not human, but she also doesn’t tolerate him being treated as lesser just because he’s not like everyone else.

I find it very interesting, and equally worrying, that Chairman Nam has begun trying to play Young-hoon against Shin, and that it’s not the first time he’s done it. Apparently he played this game once before with Jong-gil, took him in and made him an offer to be part of the family, which fostered a dangerous competition between Jong-gil and Jung-woo, the chairman’s own son. Now he’s doing it with Young-hoon, trying to put him in a place of opposition against Shin, while painting Shin as weak and unworthy. The results were deadly the first time, resulting in Jung-woo’s death, so I can’t imagine what the chairman must be thinking by doing it again. He’s a terrible judge of people — he thinks Shin is weak when in truth, he must be incredibly strong to hold onto his anger at his grandfather for twenty years. Not to mention he put Jong-gil in a position of power, and he thinks he can turn Young-hoon against Shin/Nam Shin-III. The chairman underestimates people to a dangerous degree, and doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes, so I’m gleefully looking forward to his downfall.

I’d wondered how Nam Shin-III would transfer his loyalty to So-bong after being so attached to Ro-ra for so long, and I’m pleased by the way it happened so naturally. Ro-ra went from a doting mother figure to pretty much ignoring Nam Shin-III the moment she saw Shin, which I just don’t understand. Even if he’s a robot, she created Nam Shin-III and spent nearly three times as many years with him as she did with human Shin. Of course her biological son is her priority, and I’m not arguing that he shouldn’t be, but I don’t get how she can just forget about Nam Shin-III. It does make it understandable that Nam Shin-III would gravitate to the people who do value him for who he is — Young-hoon and So-bong. They both appreciate who he is as an individual, and So-bong in particular has put herself out for him several times. I’m not the slightest bit surprised that she took the priority spot in Nam Shin-III’s list of important people so easily.

I loved that intro bit where he tries to figure out how come So-bong is now his nr one priority.

Plus I really like how he's slowly developing free will by programming his own behaviour rules.

Me too. It's nice to hear NSIII's thoughts, this way we can follow better his progress towards a more human behaviour. And it was somehow cute that he was clueless at the beginning, the poor robot is very unexperienced with human interactions, so he doesn't know a thing about others or even himself. That makes me wonder how Ro Ra treated him all this time in Czech Republic; it seems that she was never too invested in her relationship with NSIII and he was little more than a toy with her son's face for her. In any case, I would like Oh Ro Ra to have more presence in the coming episodes so we can see more clearly what she thinks of her cybernetic son.

Okay, so for awhile, the one episode a week was killing me and I ended up rewatching some of the episodes as I waited for the new one to come out and something occurred to me about Nam Shin III and Ro Ra.

I had this impression that Ro Ra and Nam Shin III spent time together...like I thought they were together for 20 years bonding, interacting or something motherly and son like (just like you) but then rewatching it, it seemed like Ro Ra only turned RoboShin on during certain periods and they may have not been long periods either.

Obviously there were 3 versions of him, but changes appear sudden and not gradual. There was this scene where RoboShin asked why his mother got short all of a sudden. So it makes me wonder, was the mom just working on his programming and looking for robotic engineering advancement all this year and not necessarily bonding with him?

Also if Ro Ra had access to her son, she would've changed RoboShin gradually, but it seemed she only turn RoboShin on when she was missing her son (which seemed to come in years...Nam Shin I was the boy Shin and Nam Shin II was the teenager Shin) or when she needed to test something. For in the first episode, David gave him a test...to see if he could complete a task. And even as we continue to watch, David and Ro Ra were still monitoring him up until So Bong discovered his identity.

It's like Ro Ra and David were trying to see if RoboShin could become human...trying to see if their programming has advanced enough. Clearly Ro Ra saw him as an experiment. David even mentioned one time he hasn't heard a sweet conversation from Ro Ra and RoboShin in a long time (how long exactly?) when Ro Ra was fixing him up and RoboShin apologized for being careless. Personally, I think David does see Nam Shin III as a son. And I think he's going to be the one (along with So Bong), who is going to have to stop Ro Ra from pulling that kill switch.

Oh and another indication that RoboShin may have not been on for long is the battery watch. When they send him to Seoul, Ro Ra had to make the watches which means he doesn't normally have a watch. He probably just stays on for a couple of hours and then goes back to that capsule he was built from to get charged.

So yeah...these things just stood out the during the 2nd rewatch and it makes me wonder....But it does explain Ro Ra's behavior. I just hope she doesn't kill him :(

I like that I wasn't the only one who went back to watch earlier episode in that very long 7-day wait ;-)

Rewatching it, I came to some similar conclusions to you. Nam Shin III wasn't created until 2015. Also, he had never been among people until that trip to the market, which made me think initially think that Mum had him locked in the house all the time to just make her food and be her RoboServant (which is why he's fine with that when So-bong asks for the same thing)

But your explanation of her activating him only for short periods of time when she misses her son, or maybe only during testing, makes a lot of sense.

Also, did you spot the bit where he fist changes the traffic lights and Mum is annoyed with David for having given him those abilities? That made me think that maybe Mum created his body and David programmed the mind? Either way clearly David added some stuff that Mum isn't aware of...

Yay!! I'm glad I'm not alone! haha and oh no I didn't see that traffic light bit!!!

Well initially, I had this impression Ro Ra created his mind and David created his body (or atleast David gave Ro Ra financing for all the materials) but this just shows how unclear we all are as to who did what. But I think you're right. David could have added some stuff. As of now, I believe they both programmed him. I just don't know who did the majority of the programming tho.

Oh and speaking of David, not only did I rewatch the episodes, I also rewatched the trailers for spoilers (yes I can be impatient hahaha) and there are two scenes of David in the 7 minutes trailer. It's like super short, but I think both scenes are back to back. First scene has David, what seems to be eavesdropping and thinking and the next scene has him facing a wall, bent slightly, like he's trying to open a lock from a wall. I still haven't figure out what could be the reason for those actions. I think I don't have enough context yet to speculate properly...Did you also rewatch the trailers too? Do you have any speculations?

@janjan18 Trailers? There are trailers?

I was just thinking that it was weird that there are no previews at the end of the episode...

*checks DF *

Can't see any trailers. Maybe I'll be patient and just wait to see what happens tomo.

@cloggie

It's on Youtube. DF has trailers there.

Here's the 7 minute one:

I see you have a lot of insight and agree that this might be the situation for NSIII and Oh Ro Ra during all the time they lived in Czech Republic. That would explain why NSIII was still so child-like. He was never allowed to interact with anyone else, and Mom didn't have a real relationship with him, so Nam Shin III could not grow up properly and evolve. This is why he remained so clueless about many things.
And yeah, I also hope that she doesn't kill him. She's just blind because of the guilt and pain she has felt all these years, but I hope someone makes her see that Nam Shin III has a mind on his own and deserves respect.

It was helpful to really get a look inside his head and thought process for once.

But I still think he's a less convincing robot than the human-pretending-to-be-a-robot in "I am not a robot" but I think that has more to do with the writing of his character/scenes than the acting. IANAR had some sense of how an android might process information and react to it. But this drama seems to dive no deeper than "robots=awkward human with no emotion" (or at least saying there is no emotion because you won't easily convince me that he has none). Otherwise he'd have to be a superior robot built with incredibly advanced technology. But given that he appears to be one of a kind in world that's only just releasing self-driving cars, I'm not convinced such technology exists.

I'll just pretend Mom stumbled across some futuristic alien McGuffin that allowed her to create him.

-I also like how he is creating his own rules. I mean that seems like a natural, logical course: as he learns and interacts, he is going to evolve, just like any other sentient being. No one's mind stays the same; he only stayed the same for all those years because of his isolation. Once that ended, he began to change.
-I don't really understand why So-bong would quit now, especially now that she knows about the kill-switch. He'll need protecting now more than ever. If she's worried about her life, I can understand, but at least give Nam Shin-III a heads up to the potential danger he's in. Even if he wouldn't believe that his mother would kill him, tell HIM to check his systems for any tampering. Say something, ANYTHING!!
-Though they may separate for a time, these two are drawn to each other so I don't think the separation will last long.
-And how awesome is Nam Shin-III going up against Ye-na and siding with So-bong. I love him so much.

Before So Bong agreed to help Nam Shin III, she gave the condition that she'll only help until thing gets complicated. Once things are complicated, she'll pull out. At this point, things are getting complicated for her, so true to her words, she's pulling out. You have to keep in mind that So Bong also has other important people in her life: her father, Robocop, Joint and Reporter Jo who will be affected once Jong-Gil realizes her betrayal (and he has a murderous rage!). Also her relationship with Nam Shin III...as of now, I don't think she's bonded with him on a deep, personal and intimate level where she'll sacrifice her life (we of course have bonded with both of them! lol). I mean, she's just started to accept him for who he is so she can't have developed any romantic feelings yet. I believe once So Bong realizes that she does indeed have feelings for Nam Shin III, only then will she risk her life. But she's kind of slow...so who knows when that'll be? lol For sure, I think Nam Shin III will realize it first and I can say that's the most human he'll be, for isn't it the guys who fall in love first in Korean dramas? haha

I think So Bong figured out that NS3 is behaving more like himself and not as human Shin when he's around her. I bet she thinks this will become a problem for Ro Ra and Young Hoon if he continues making new rules for her and then they'll destroy him when he doesn't obey them any more. Also, she said earlier that she'll quit if it becomes complicated and it's understandable that she is scared with all the crazy plotting going on against a lovable android- what could happen to a human when people don't even flinch at the thought of disposing off a Shinnamon Roll.

I think this was my favorite episode so far - so many goodies to unpack.

I love our Shinnabong Couple. Love them, love them, love them. @justme even nicknamed them #RespectCouple, which I think says worlds about what's so cool about the two. They're perfect partner-pals, complementing each other, building each other up, teasing.. They're truly growing together, and it's a delight to behold.

I may or may not have grinned extremely wide MANY times during the episode, through the wedding dress moments, Shin holding his future FIL in his lap while whispering, Robot Pals doing volunteer work, and SoBongie becoming friends with Roomba-Chingu..

I can't wait to see Shinnamon break free and rebel, being his sassy, sweetheart self along the way. I'd stand guard to protect him, but I think a certain grumpy lady has his back.

It was my favourite episode too.

That wedding dress moment was awesome, especially the way she was sloughing on the arm of the sofa, telling him to pretend to be wowed by his bride's looks.

And then the moment at the end where she tells him to make his own decisions.

So good... Gotta love a drama that gets better every week.

I'm not surprised by the mother. I mean she was separated from her son and now she can see him, he's in the coma. She doesn't see Nam Shin III like we do because for her he's a thing she created nothing more.

The relationship between Nam Shin III and So Bong is so cute. I could watch only this part ! Exit the grandfather, Ye Na, the father of Ye Na.

I do understand that about the mother too, that for her he's a creation. I also think she feels really guilty about abandoning ComaShin as a child and now tries to make up for that guilt by destroying/sacrificing the beloved substitute once her son wakes up.

The character I find very interesting is mum's partner (boyfriend?) who has also gone through that creation process, if I interpreted their working connection correctly. But he seems to be on RoboShin's side and keeps warning mum not to treat him the way she does...

He might end up being the one talking sense into mum.

I think his name is David. I agree it would be interesting to know more about him. Even if he is close to Ro Ra, I don't think he knows about the kill switch. He definitely seems on Robo Shin's side, even calling him "my son".

Yep, Mom created him as a temporary fix and will have no problem getting rid of him. Remember how we were introduced to adult NSIII, he was her housekeeper and cook who never left the compound. David was the one that had to convenience her to let NSIII go out in public.

David sees NSIII has someone that can flourish, Mom see it as something that can be destroyed when done with it. It was true self gratification and expectation of control on her part, I mean, look at her reaction when he was listening to SB and not her, that was not the reaction of someone who cared. She was upset that she was no longer in control. That's it.

The stupid thing is that there is no reason for using the kill switch when ComaShin wakes up. They can simply change his appearance and let him be. I understand that it is useful to have one as a last resort solution should he go completely nuts or sth but not for this. I hate it when logic needs to be sacrificed in the name of creating drama.

But it's not only his apparence. It's goal was to take the place of human Nam Shin for her. I mean you wake up and you learn that your mom built a robot with your name and apparence instead to come and save of your villain grandfather. The only purpose of Nam Shin III was to make feel less lonely, now she can be with her son, so for her Nam Shin III didn't have to exist anymore.

I hadn't thought about it that way - that the kill switch is an extension of her feeling guilty about abandoning ComaShin. Still - she is his creator who spent 20y building a technological marvel. At least her professional pride should keep her for jumping the gun on destroying her own creation. They can change his face if they don't want people including ComaShin to know he was a double (although how are they going to explain that nobody noticed him gone and he's all of a sudden married to YN?). If they are worried about RoboShin being hacked and the truth being revealed that way - then they can erase his episodic memories starting from the accident. But there is no need to go for complete destruction unless you are really lazy or hate his guts. Now maybe she does hate herself so much that this is true. But it is not the rational choice.

5

I also realised (after checking a bit of ep 2) that she only made Nam Shin III in 2015. I thought he'd been like this for ages. He's only a 3 year-old!

@charlie, I know. I guess I was thinking that Mum had had this incarnation of RoboShin for a lot longer, but she only made the physical changes 3 years ago.

2

I guess it's a sort of Frankenstein complex: she built Robo Shin to console herself, and possibly out of pride and rebellion towards Chairman. She didn't make NM3 to love him, but to stand in for real Shin. So it is possible that she might come to hate this creation and seek to destroy it out of guilt towards the real Shin.
I kind of need Human Shin to wake up pronto and tell his Mom that NM3 is not at fault for her guilty feelings.

6

@cloggie,

I also think she [Dr. Oh] feels really guilty about abandoning ComaShin as a child

To be fair, RoboMom did not abandon her son. His grandfather kidnapped him and used his goons, power, and money to force her to give up custody. As far as I can tell, she had no recourse. "Possession is 9/10 of the law." Chairman Nam had his grandson in his clutches, and there was not a darned thing she could do about it. We still don't know the circumstances of Shin's Dad's death when he went to visit Chairman Nam. I wouldn't put anything past him -- or rival Jong-gil, whom we know has no compunction about ordering an assassination.

@cloggie,

It wouldn't surprise me if David might have included some "undocumented features" in NSIII's design that are related to his AI's learning mode.

We haven't seen much of David lately. I'd like to learn more of his back story. He seems to truly love NSIII, and may in fact miss him terribly. I don't recall whether David knows about the kill switch. RoboMom may have mentioned it only to Young-hoon.

I think it's possible that at some point NSIII will notice the kill switch when he runs his diagnostics. It would be really nice if So-bong clued him in before that.

Speaking of David, I've read a lot of people mention what a big flirt Nam Shin III is (and he totally is! lol) and people were wondering who made him that way. They speculated that could be David's doing! I mean he was the one who told Nam Shin III to get Ro Ra flowers and when the gal selling flower tried to give her name and number, he refused. So maybe David learned from that interaction and upgraded Nam Shin III's programming concerning flirting? lol

So many feels in this episode:

I loved RoboShin in the scene after dropping faux-fiance home when SM asks him why was he behaving that way and he can't look her straight in the eyes but instead offers to drive pretending he didn't hear her. I also loved the look on SB's face when she spies him being cool at work. They have such an easy rapport - all the little glances they exchange when no one is looking... their body language... or how she instantaneously switches to banmal when they are alone.

I loved how SB can't help but protect his feelings even when he claims to have none. Basically every second of ShinnaBong together is totally squee-worthy.

One thing that I am still slightly puzzled about is her quitting: is it because mum was complaining that Shin's proximity to her was making him 'weird' and she'll have to turn him off sooner if he becomes too hard to control? Or is it that she has realized how strongly she feels about him and she is running away because she can't bear to see him being terminated once he has outlived his usefulness?

Also about mum's ruthless decision to kill RoboShin at the end: as his creator she knows better than anyone his inner workings; as such it's easy to see him as an aggregation of carbon fibers and algorithms instead of a person. Still I don't believe this is the case - I think that she had developed strong feelings for RoboShin over the years. She is treating him this coldly precisely because he had become her surrogate child. She feels guilty for being happy that way while leaving her biological child in his awful grandfather's care. And it is this guilt that is overwriting any feelings she may have had for RoboShin in the past.

Finally, the geek corner: it was cool how they provided some explanations for his internal workings; how he does not have complete access to his own decision making machinery but has the metacognitive ability to question/analyse his own behavior. And the RL geek in me is spazzing at the rewriting rulebook feature. No human creator would have thought it a good idea to build in such a thing but the possibilities are so exciting.

Two things about our flawed heroine:
1) She makes promises without thinking ahead, and doesn't always keep them.
2) She tends to flee from complicated situations.

So, she had promised Shin she would protect him and it felt like a genuine promise... why break it? Is it because she can't bear to see him destroyed, or because she can't bear being in this mess and wants to escape? Maybe it's both?

The situation is quite messy: she is in danger because Jong-Gil suspects her, and there is no human being that she can trust. She's probably been running from situations for a long time, so she wants to escape again. Still, I don't think Robo Shin will let her become a Noble (or Ignoble) Idiot for long... Maybe it was just end-of-episode dramatics and I've written a whole essay on something that won't matter. 😂

In any case, I hope she finds out that Young Hoon isn't pleased with the kill switch either so they can gang up and save Nam Shin 3. So-Bong, fighting! *fist pump*

I know! At first when she said: I'm quitting as your guard, I hoped she was going to follow that with: because my employers are gits and I'll just protect you as your friend instead.

And then I was really disappointed when she stormed off.

But it was totally in character of course. I remember her saying that her father taught her that you can't have pride in a fight. That if you don't duck the punches, you're going to lose. I think that's where her extreme self-preservation comes from. She's walking about from the fight. Running from situations, as you said.

I think she'll realise that if she isn't going to fight for him then nobody will. Or maybe he'll make her understand that if they work together they've got a fighting chance.

Anyway, I'll join you in a Fighting!!!

Actually - there is another thing that I don't completely account for: I get why he would make a rule about caring/protecting SB - she is after all the one who most cares and protects him at the moment. What is less obvious is why their relationship is taking romantic connotations. He is flirting with her, and encouraging skinship (e.g. when he challenges her to let him carry her), and asking her about her feelings about them kissing ... Is it because he senses that despite SB's loud disclaimers her feelings to him are romantic?

8

Required fields are marked *

The encouraging skinship is very interesting.

If we assume RoboShin has no feelings, the algorythm could have worked somehow like this: after the kiss, that he looked up why So-bong was flustered and asked if she liked him because his search had discovered that skinship makes people care about each other more (or words to that effect).

He also commented in the swimming pool scene that she hates touching him.

So it seems that the conclusion he has drawn is that if he wants her to care about him more, he has to have more skinship with her.

Alternatively scrap all that and he's totally just flirting with her. Maybe he's seen that behaviour in some drama somewhere ;P

Hmm the does-Shin-have-feelings question is a tricky one: he can't have any in the traditional use of the word; yet he has internal states that make him behave as if he he had them. I personally am in favor of a Turing-like perspective if-it-looks-like-a-duck-quacks-like-a-duck-then-for-most-practical-purposes-it-is-a-duck. If algorithmically he looks like he has feelings then for most practical purposes he does. Yet when we start talking about romantic feelings that's when is gets tricky. One cannot easily justify love from a computational perspective - being a robot precludes the primary goal of romance (reproduction). Still there are other roles for love (connection, acceptance, social integration, fun) so he needs to converge to a behavior that looks like love while still holding on to his belief that he does not have feelings and that romance is something only human couples do. No wonder that he is puzzled by his own behavior.

It’s so interesting not only to see him changing but for us and the characters to realize what’s been there all along.

Like the people around NS 3 (and he himself) thought the situation was ‘Robot obeying orders’ while it may have been a case of ‘Sweetheart thinks he should be, and is generally well disposed to, pleasing people around him’ all along. His mom asked him to go to Korea, she didn’t order him (even though I’m sure that’s just how she was comfortable speaking to him, and a refusal would have shocked them both) and he said yes, told her not to be sad, and told YH his mom was more important than any rule. Obedience seems to be his voluntary expression of affection, and part of his searching for connection and praise. (Lord does this boy love praise: pleased to be a hero, constantly asking if he did well.)

In the very first episode when he wanted to go to market he played the robot card, ooh caffeine limit exceeded mom, take me to the humans and the flower stalls! And he could see his mom didn’t want him to go off by himself—she said no way—but off he went, because he wanted to and David gave him the excuse. Similarly now Mr Robot Servant was told by his supposed master So Bong to get a cab and go after Ye Na, he was all ‘Shan’t, no interest, don’t want to, I shall walk joyously among the populace and have me a date with my pretty lady!’ while she was left going ‘okay... five minutes...’ I mean sir. Sir! Y’all are not the best master and servant ever as you informed each other, you’re both terrible at this, you’re just both blinded by affection and wanting to express that affection in ways that aren’t terrifying and life changing to both of you.

As we see his sense of humor more and more displayed, it’s also pretty clear that things like him hopping back in the car for Young Hoon to open his door were more (possibly unconscious) passive-aggressive robot resistance. So was ‘oh kissing me doesn’t matter because I’m a robot? Cool cool, guess I’ll carry you about and offer to undress you and... hey just a robot, nothing to see here.’ He’s able to negotiate his hurt and get his own way. He’s smilingly implacable in many ways, and they’re all starting to realize that. Which must be alarming.

But now as often happens when a kid leaves home, his coping mechanisms for that environment aren’t working in this new environment. And we have to wonder how much his personality is being a robot, how much is being told he’s a robot and has no feelings, and how much it’s being raised in intense seclusion. He’s not used to negative treatment and is always indignant about it—he protests that he’s Shin too to his mom, always called out SB’s lies, slammed the door on YH all ‘golly I’m just IMITATING YOU NOW LISTEN UP!’ and was blazing ‘F U’ to Ye Na throughout these last episodes. But his flying under the radar days are over: he tried the robot act and fooled absolutely nobody in the room with his ‘I WON’T LET YOU MISTREAT SO BONG! ... orrrr...

5

Ahem. Excuse my length!

Anyway, NS 3 is very young, too. Human NS is I think meant to be 28? I know So Bong is 28. But NS3 was made when Human Shin was I think 8, and he’s had an adult body for only 3 years. So he’s 20, and a sheltered 20! (Please forgive if my mathematics are wrong. Not my strong subject. But you see my point.)

He’s been trying for new connections and broadened horizons all this time: making overtures of friendship to Young Hoon, responding with physical affection to So Bong when she tells him he was cool and then trying deliberately to repeat said coolness and asking for praise. He and So Bong have been in a positive reinforcement loop for a while. He started it with hugs and empathy, she showed him concern when he’d just thrown himself into a pool trying to recreate the sensation of being loved by his mother, and then as soon as NS 3 showed he might be affected by her opinion of him (thus indicating she hadn’t been fooled by an object) she agreed to help him, convinced by his emotional appeal as she wasn’t by Laura’s or Young Hoon’s.

Praise junkie extraordinaire NS 3 obviously wants relationships, is accustomed to offering physical affection, and is going to double down on anything that makes people he likes happy. When So Bong offers a relationship (master/servant) he jumps at it and then tries to create intimacy through mentioning it. (I can carry you because of this, I can carry your bag, I can carry all your books in school...) He seemed confusedly open to kissing hologram Ye Na, and a little pleased to find himself holding So Bong after the fire. Is it him responding to others’ wants or wanting? If he wants to respond, maybe it’s the same thing. We are talking about someone who’s in some ways a teenager with a first crush, what you’re feeling confusing enough without believing you don’t have feelings. (Sure, Mr Spends His Alone Time Staring at Mom’s Pic & Befriending Vacuums.)

Humans can create new neural pathways for themselves: acting fond of someone makes you feel fonder of them. It’s fascinating to think of a creature made as an emotional therapy robot—replacing a loved one far away—it’s oddly plausible (unlike the battery watch) that something which simulates love would become someone loving, who craves love in return.

5

@Mary Brennan : I agree with you to some extend about Shin III personality. I'm aware he is more and more showing some selfishness in him the more he interacting with human. He is crave affection and self acknowledge from people he care, just like human usually will. This drama acknowledge to the fact human has greed and selfihness in them.

1

@Mary Brennan:

"It’s fascinating to think of a creature made as an emotional therapy robot—replacing a loved one far away—it’s oddly plausible (unlike the battery watch) that something which simulates love would become someone loving, who craves love in return."

YES!!! Omg, yes!!! I agree with you 1000%!!! No, that many zeroes is not an error. hahaha

But yes, you've come to the same conclusion as I and that is, RoboShin isn't just a robot (and I'll clarify here when I say robot, I mean a machine that can compute and do tasks errorlessly and efficiently beyond a human's own mental and physical capacity) - RoboShin is an "emotional theraphy robot" (yes, I'm quoting you because that's correct!). The reason Ro Ra made him in the first place is to comfort her...to fill the void in her heart. And to think that Nam Shin III would crave love in return...and act passive aggressive! (Damn sent me chills whenever I see those scenes! He did the same to Chairman Nam too when Chairman Nam wanted to mess with So Bong). Wow....

So basically, Ro Ra built a robot that is emotionally intelligent but Nam Shin III's not emotionally aware yet. Can't wait to see what happens next!!

I loved these episodes. ❤️ It was very emotional and full of SB-NSIII sweetness all along. So bad that in the end she wants to leave him. Hopefully she will come around soon and be at NSIII side.
NSIII's moment of realization in the end was so good, the poor robot was so confused. It would have been great in other circumstances, but being in danger to be killed, it felt also a bit sad. But So Bong demonstrated how much she cares about NSIII, she's telling him to be his own person and not to obey orders anymore. The poor girl is also in a difficult situation, she seems to feel overwhelmed and helpless, even she cares that much for NSIII, she must think there is little she can do for him, and that she might only suffer and be in danger. That will make it more satisfying when she musters the courage to step up to protect NSIII, because I'm sure she will do it soon, hehe!
Anyway, the best couple moment was in the swimming pool. I'm sure it was the first time that NSIII was asked about his life, and he and So Bong were so sweet they gave me a sugar peak. 😻 Moreover, the moment where he asked about the kiss, and if she would have been that angry if he was human...I had a mini-heart attack. And So Bong had it too, methinks. And later when he said that she hates his touch...boy, So Bong had a different thing written all over her face at that moment.
Well, even if it's not too good for my health I'm already craving for more episodes. I'll be cheering for the cyborg-roboshin couple. 💕

With Ye Na calling NS 3 disgusting as So Bong did, and backing up her words with actions like making him face a corner, NS 3 is clearly tragically convinced he is repulsive and terrifying to humans. He didn’t know those women were checking him out, bless, and if he did he’d see it as them liking human NS, as Ye Na does.

Yet he does keep trying for skinship! What his motives are, are unclear even to himself—is he picking up on SB’s unconscious cues and trying to please her? How many dramas has he watched and got ideas? Does it even matter, as human motives are mysterious too? Had she said ‘I would have been mad if you were human because people should ask for kisses’ would he have asked? I guess we may see...

Meanwhile So Bong, fighting off her overwhelming impulses to go for a robot who keeps telling her he has no feelings and specifically—regarding Ye Na in a wedding dress—that he can’t feel attraction. It must have felt insane and hopeless to her even before she learned he was doomed...

Ah, mutual pining.

Speaking of, I do keep looking out for a love line for Young Hoon (Ye Na? Laura in a noona romance?) but he does seem primarily attached to Human Shin. Which I’d be all for—and then the two couples could be effective beards for each other—but you know, kdramas. He does seem to be becoming bros with NS 3, and I can’t believe SB totally bro hug blocked us by advising NS 3 to quit it with the hugging. YH was due to be embraced!

Also, it is hilarious to consider Human Shin waking up and somehow getting away... as he’d be in unfamiliar surroundings and feel under threat... and then via news footage being like ‘I’m a hero who saves people from fires? I’m in love with my bodyguard who I keep hugging in public? Wow this was some knock on the head...’

I do want Human NS to wake up, for his mom and Young Hoon’s sake, and because he had a terrible life. I’d be sad for all of them if he passed: just give us two Shins, and have them all go live in the Czech Republic together! I see no issue with SB having a lovely robot boyfriend, and human Shin making a donation if they want kids. (NS 3 would clearly make a great dad, seeing him with the kid—I knew he would melt once actually confronted with the real life kid, that sweetie.) Save them all but especially NS 3!

If my Young Hoon/Human Shin ship were to come in, So Bong could return the favor! (I know it won’t! It just seems like it would solve all problems...)

I am worried about a potential future with the two Shins merging, I’d rather they stayed separate, but hey, anything that lets us avoid the kill switch and attain happiness.

I want Shin to wake more for others than himself, but I do think he gave the toy robot to the kiddo, and loves his mom and his friend, so I don’t want him to die or indeed be married off against his wishes. In fact if my NS/YH ship can’t come in, it would also be great justice for Human Shin to fall for So Bong, in my imaginary scenario where he stumbles around for a bit thinking they have a great love—and maybe even encounters her and has her protect him? (SB: you’re acting very weird, I’m taking you to your mom. Human NS: my mom? Wow the lady I romanced in a fugue state is amazing!) That would be appropriate revenge for his airport trick! But I would only ever want him to be a tragically unrequited second lead. I am with you: Robo Love 4 Lyfe.

You know what is a question I'm looking forward for Human Shin to answer when he wakes up? Why did he pick So Bong to do the public shaming (that slap was a no no..did you see the way he shook his hand afterwards? lol ) and what did he promise to Reporter Jo? Like what was the deal they agreed on or made? Why So Bong? Did human Shin feel like he could trust So Bong too, just like how RoboShin trusts her currently?

Personally, I thought that because the two Shins were a byproduct of Ro Ra (both biologically and inorganically), I think it would only make sense that they have similar traits. I mean Ro Ra and her husband's genes would've passed on to human Shin. Ro Ra's traits and her husband's would've been programmed into Nam Shin III - to make him appear like her "son". In my eyes, they are really her sons for both are her creation. So I don't think they're going to "merge", rather I think they'll work together. I see them more like twins - similar yet so different. Cleary, YH sees the similarities and he's closest to human Shin. To me, human Shin and RoboShin are like Yin and Yang. Human Shin is the dark, broody and closed off one while RoboShin is radiant, emotionally stable and nurturing/seeking connections. I think they both need each other to create a balance in their own lives (ie: make their mother stable, make the Chairman not so ruthless) So I don't think they'll merge, but more like, they may have to work together because ultimately, it'll benefit everyone in their lives. Thus I believe both their existences have to coexist in order to create balance and ....sanity. Cuz so far everyone is pretty much insane hahaha

Now lets see if Ro Ra will come to this conclusion - that both are really her sons and that she can't kill off Roboshin! ;_;

I think this drama is handling the contrast between Shin III and the human around him quite well though. THe writers doesn't shy away to show the greed and selfish of human nature which is quite a fit and the contrast nature of the robot who don't experience such thing. And that's totally the point of the story IMO. So I will totally expecting the upcoming unpleasant nature of them will come up as the main conflict.

So Boong hasn't change yet for I see.. She is just more warm up with Shin III more and we are just come to see her good side.

Of course you are right. Humans can be and often are short-sighted, stupid, selfish, cruel and plain irrational and RoboShin is by far the superior man by comparison. The drama makes this point quite clear.

But -while undeniably true- that's a way-too-depressing point to spend 2h/week of my time on. I am here for cute cyborg-robot interactions and a bit of creative sci-fi. If the story messes up with these things, I'm out.

But watch the Dramafever version. The one on KBS is shorter and misses scenes from the international cut.

I’m still worried as to where this is all going to go. I hope the show finds a way to make Nam Shin 3 survive. I will watch with baited breath but I can’t help but feel it will end in his destruction :( the I wondered whether the show would somehow merge the essence of robot nam shin into human nam shin as a way to make him wake up! 🤔

I also find it interesting as I watch nam shin 3 become more human as what is it exactly that is making him human. The acting is good and transition from robot to human like is really subtle!
His mother has clearly created him to be much more intelligent than a human so is it any wonder he is developing his own rules!

I am, too. Especially now that I am so much invested with ShinBot and Sobong. I feel like it would be a cop out if ComaShin eventually ends up with Sobong. But I am really curious to see where the shows takes this RoboHuman love story.

The only solution I'll accept is if Sobong becomes a robot herself with her memories intact. Since Mom's technology allows bots to grow feelings, SobongBot can be robotically happy ever after with ShinBot.

I love this drama. Period.
The only thing that frustrates me is how sites are numbering episodes differently (1-16 or 1-32). I never quite know which episode we're discussing. This is episode 8 for me...I think... I'm not sure.

Thanks! Oh, 18? I thought we were half-way through... Innnteresting. Plenty of time for Human Shin to wake up and spice it up even more. I'm sold on Seo Kang Joon's acting as the robot and robot-who-acts-as-a-human, but I would like to see what he does with human Shin too.

I agree! It would be really neat to see him playing the two roles simultaneously, like in the first episode. I was really impressed by him in episode 1. I know that part of the praise should go to the makeup team, but I think he also did a great job at showing the contrast between two characters.

Even Nam Shin III going from acting like Human Shin to melting back into being Shinnamon is so much fun to watch!

Yeah, he changes his expression in a millisecond, from Shin to NSIII, it's just perfect. His acting has been on point all these episodes, SKJ is doing a great job here.

9

Seo Kang Joon has quite have good wide ranges of emotion. And an actor who can show vulnerability throughout which he add through NSIII. I'm quite impressed by him and his seriousness to dig deeper NS III despite he is only being a robot. any other less actor will makes NS III bland.

3

KBS has ~ 30-minute episodes (36 in total) that are slightly different cut than the 1-hour version (18 in total) on DF.

If I’m not mistaken in regards to the recap I think So-bong didn’t turn off her phone intentionally; I believe her phone died. They kept on showing us how it was on low battery and she was visibly scared. She wouldn’t have intentionally turned off her phone to avoid Nam Shin-III at that point. And then when she was with Reporter Jo she asked for a charger.

Kudos to Seo Kang-joon and Gong Seung-yeon. I know a majority of viewers are living for the romance (their chemistry is sizzling and fun), but they are killing it with how much humanity they're imbuing in their characters. I am fully invested and ready to do a few hard, tear-clearing blinks in the future.

Ro-ra's becoming the main antagonist for me. She has yet to realize that being a mother isn't separate from being a creator. Her actions are motivated by guilt and fear, and when these emotions mix, they can produce hate. She's more like Chairman Nam than she thinks, and that will be her undoing, especially if Human Shin wakes and makes the same observation.

The romance is wonderful. I'm squeeing as much here as I am for WWWSK.

One thing I'm noticing are the comments from Young-hoon about how much NS3 reminds him of Human Shin. I'm having thoughts, all of them heartbreaking.

Seo Kang-joon hooked me from the start (what a pleasant surprise!) but I wasn’t sure about Gong Seung-yeon at first—and I loved her in Circle! At the beginning she was definitely overacting. However, she has really grown into her character and I’m really enjoying her now.

Their interactions with each other are very natural. I love that scene in the dress shop where she is so casually and comfortably lounging on the couch’s arm rest!

I agree that both SKJ and GSY are doing a swell job as the leads. I am mainly watching because of the two. My attention drifts elsewhere when they're not on.

Props to GSY because I might have lost interest in Sobong if another actress were playing her. I also wouldn't feel much for the OTP if it wasn't her playing Sobong. I am also loving SKJ in this. He's definitely one of the most talented actors in his age range. Can't wait for ComaShin to wake up and see SKJ portraying the two roles.

Gong Seung Yeon and Seo Kang Joon might not be Go Ah Sung and Jung Kyung Ho, but for what it's worth I've liked them in every show in them that I've watched.

And goodness, is Cranky girl and fluffy robo-boy not the cutest dynamic ever. Sobs. I don't know how this relationship is going to work out but I sure hope it does.

Ro Ra joins the M car team now, that means she and NS3 will work with each other daily and where they will see “the true colour” of each other. He will find out his meaning to his mother is absolutely not her loving words He heard before. She will find out he no longer listens to her like she planned to.

I guess i feel really bad for human NS. His life have been in the claws of his grandfather, and when he is in coma everybody is making decision for him in the form of NS3. His biggest wish was to reunite with his mother, and he also did not want to have anything to do with the company. as wee see in the opening episode. So what they are doing is far from what he want. Don´t take me wrong, i adore our sweet robot. but they those thing without NS consent... the worst for me is the marriage with YN, I hope it those not happen. It irk me that nobody even think about what NS want in all this. this also make me done with YN, she sees that she finally can get what she want, even if the right person cant say no... pleas wake up NS!

with that said NS3 and SB is so cute <3

I was thinking the same thing, Shin has no interest in the company, so he's probably going to be really happy for RoboShin to continue pretending he's him?

I don't know if that's where this show is going, but I can see a situation where both versions of Shin end up getting their freedom. Which would be great.

I'm with you on Sobong. I think what happened to her MMA career really burned her and made her think that she doesn't have any power to affect things. She stood up to the corrupt referee and federation but got expelled in the end. That's quite a chip on one's shoulder. I like that what she is learning now from her interaction with RoboShin is that, outside her inner circle, there is someone who can be loyal to her and who can protect her, despite everything, that there is someone who she can influence for the better.

Thank you for your recap and commentary, LollyPip.

The more I see of some of the humans in this drama, the more I like Energizer CinnamonBun-ny. Now with evolving algorithms! ;-)

Chairman Nam is a horrible old coot. Park Young-gyu is doing a fine job as the amoral, scheming tycoon. It's no wonder he selected someone like Seo Jong-gil to warp mold into a poisoned Mini-Me. (I'm enjoying Yu Oh-seong as a much more nuanced baddie than Ki Chul in FAITH, although he was great in that role, too.) I honestly don't understand why he does that. Maybe he has a God complex or something. Or maybe he is entertained by building up and knocking down socially-inferior beings he can bully. The thought that he's going to pit Ji Young-hoon against his own grandson (in emulation of his earlier game of setting Jong-gil against Shin's late father) grosses me out.

I'm even more grossed out by Seo Ye-na. I will never understand Kdrama females who insist on forcing marriage on guys who want nothing to do with them. (ABOUT TIME has a real doozy in its cast too. She is so vengeful and horrid that I want to scream.) Ye-na seems to be totally oblivious to how pathetic she appears. The only way she can get human Shin to marry her is to hold the wedding while he's in a coma? Really?

Mention of Nam Shin III's kill switch brings to mind PROJECT X, the sci-fi tale of Virgil, a chimp who communicates via American Sign Language. He is a subject in a radiation-exposure study with a 100% mortality rate. Yikes. Nam Shin III is in a similar pickle. I'm feeling less kindly disposed to Dr. Oh Ro-ra for implementing the ultimate in planned obsolescence for her silicon son. Boo! Hiss!

Location Trivia: Coach Kang's gym appeared in the movie THE FOUL KING (2000).

Chairman is a horrible scheming tycoon, but I kind of like having a smart and hard-to-decipher villain. This same actor played the corrupt chairman of TQ Group in Chief Kim, where he basically sat in a chair (chairman, literally) and grunted while Seo Yul fed or mis-fed him information throughout the drama. He has less screen-time and a more compelling role in AYHT, thankfully.

I think underling Jong-Gil gave us a nice clue about Chairman's rather schizophrenic ways: one moment he's warm and asking to be called Grandfather, and the next he's cold and calculating, training people to be his dogs. Young Hoon is one puppy who is straining on his leash.

Ye-Na has lost any tiny grace she had with me. It's bad enough to try to force marriage on a guy who doesn't like you, but to do it while he's in coma and unable to say anything about it? Ugh. Just ugh.

When NSIII said that he made her taller, skinnier and bustier, he meant that he took Yena's photo and put her face on it, while photoshopping her body to fit Sobong's body! Which was why Sobong kinda got embarrassed :D

There were so so many awesome blossom moments in this episode! But somehow, I am suspicious of David. I mean, isn't he somehow too good to be for real? All we know about him is that he helped Ro Ra to make NS3, he is helping Ro Ra with protecting Shin, he probably has a lot of money and he probably likes Ro Ra and also calls NS3 as his son. But why? The look he gave Ye Na when she was leaving was weird and I have a feeling that the show is not shining more light on his background on purpose. It might just be my own crazy suspicion when no one else who knows NS3 is on his side (except for So Bong, but we know her). I would be really glad if the show takes an unpredictable turn with him, it'll totally spice up the drama!

I thought the weird look he gave Ye Na was just because he was so appalled at her threat to rat them out to Evil Dad if she wasn't allowed to visit ComaShin?

Please don't make me suspicious of the only human apart from So bong who's on RoboShin's side (*sobs*)

I don't know whether to laugh at Chairman Nam. He fancies himself a strategizer, full of competence to lead his company. However, he tries to pit people against each other who, you would assume, are the ones you'd least likely want to go head-to-head against each other. Why? Because his beloved company is what always ends up being at stake. Who'd do that?! ...... He tried it once with Jong-gil and I'd argue he's still paying the price of that action by having to block Jong-gil's takeover attempts on what seem a daily basis. What does the Chairman do now? He tries the same thing with Young-hoon. Who'd willingly do that??

Also, it was interesting to see Ro-ra's outburst upon her knowing that Nam Shin-III is overriding her "programmed" rules. Telling was her statement that she made him perfect and was therefore questioning his judgement. Unless something else unbeknownst to Ro-ra is in that robot, software/code-wise, she's going to have quite the challenge keeping him in check going forward.

My dislike for Ro-Ra seems to be increasing with each episode. Seo Kang Joon's face seems to be the thing that I want to see before I go to sleep. RoboShin defending So Bong was so adorable. Watching Mom get angry at RoboShin was almost hard to watch. Who can blame him for keeping her his top priority whwn all everyone wants is a person who sees us as we are yet sticks with us

Even if NS3 says he doesn't have any feelings, I disagree. Why? every time I see his face, it pains me.... His face and expression is mixed of innocence and sometimes he looks so confused especially when he's looking at Mom's caring of Human Sin. The more I see NS3, the more I see he is as human (well, Seo Kang-joon is human :) ), this makes me to "Bicentennial Man" which I watched years years ago. A robot could develop a feeling and a will too....

It pains me more when I think of Mom will press "kill switch" anytime, especially when his human son wakes up. He then disappears.

I'd hate the idea if the writer will decide to make a twist, like the writer will make NS3 disappears, and plants his memory to Human Sin (let's say he got amnesia because of the accident), then pair Human Sin with SB. Human Sin may have the memory as NS3, but SB's would be different. If all the scenarios work, this gonna give me "Big" or "Rooftop Prince" endings' vibe. And I'm gonna hate this. Even if it's gonna be a sad ending, I'm ready. That is better than unrealistic ending.

OMG! I am thinking the same wherein they implant NamSin3 into the real namSin and they will be a type of cyborg, because the show keeps hinting on a cyborg thing. I still have mixed feelings on it.
Also I don’t want to see as well a Zettai Kareshi type of ending! While a bicentennial man ending i’m on the fence. Either way, i think we all have to ready our emotions when the ending comes! :)

Am I the only one that wants NamSin to wake up already? if this thing pans out like BIG wherein the comatose literally did not wake up on screen, I would scream bloody murder. Lol.
On a side note, I’m so afraid of how this thing will end, i’m getting a Zettai Kareshi vibe wherein I just cried at the ending of it, because even I can’t imagine how she could end up with a robot???
