Cha Tae-hyun, Bae Doo-na, Lee El, Sohn Suk-goo play spouses for The Best Divorce

Cha Tae-hyun, Bae Doo-na, Lee El, Sohn Suk-goo

Man, that is a great lineup. KBS has a new romantic comedy planned for later this fall, and the show has signed on Cha Tae-hyun (The Best Hit), Bae Doo-na (Forest of Secrets), Sohn Suk-goo (Mother), and Lee El (Hwayugi) as its leads. Somewhat ironically titled The Best Divorce, the show promises to explore how differently men and women view love, marriage, and family in an honest and comical manner.

In The Best Divorce, our four leads are set up to be two married couples: Cha Tae-hyun will play husband to Bae Doo-na, and Sohn Suk-goo will be Lee El’s spouse. I was a little surprised to hear about the Cha Tae-hyun/Bae Doo-na pairing, if only because I feel like they have very different repertoires; she’s more action and drama while he’s a primarily comedic actor. But they’re both great actors, so I’m excited to see them working together.

Cha Tae-hyun sounds like he’s playing against type here anyway, playing a stubborn, no-nonsense, generally unpleasant and prickly husband. After years of seeing his good-natured variety persona, it might be a shock to my system to see him play this role. Hopefully his wife can act as a good balance to his grouchiness: She’s described as pretty much the opposite of her husband, with a laid-back attitude that allows her to take everything in stride. Every so often, she gets a little flustered, but she approaches everything with a positive and lovable attitude.

I’m looking forward to this next pairing as well, since Sohn Suk-goo and Lee El have both played very memorable side characters, and I’m eager to see them taking on relatively bigger roles in a primetime drama. Lee El’s character is Cha Tae-hyun’s first love (natch) and is described as reserved and someone who evokes a desire to protect her from the people around her. That doesn’t mean, however, that she’s a weak person, and she has a strength that allows her to protect the life she’s built for herself. I’m sure that includes her husband, Sohn Suk-goo, who is unreadable and whose inscrutability constantly attracts the attention of women. Not exactly a trait I’d want in my husband, but who knows, maybe they make it work.

I was intrigued to learn that this show is another adaptation of Sakamoto Yuji’s work, since the last adaptation of his was tvN’s Mother, which was very different in tone and much heavier on the drama. I have only heard good things about Mother, so I hope The Best Divorce is just as successful. In the director’s chair is PD Yoo Hyun-ki, whose credits include Brain, My Daughter Seo-young, and Unkind Women.

The Best Divorce is slated to premiere sometime in October of this year.

I wouldn't necessarily put Cha Tae Hyun in the same acting bracket as the other three, but he ain't that bad either, so maybe he'll elevate his performance to match Bae Doo Na.

Regarding the plot, I do hope the two couples remain separate and do not become entangled in each other's romances. I already see the angst potential with the first love thing but some dramas do put a twist on it (see Your House Helper: Tae Hee and lawyer).

I've got one question though: who is the writer? I think the content is quite assured given that it's an adaptation, but you'll never know with k-drama writers. Somehow they manage to screw up even the best scripts.

Oh, these two couples will definitely become entangled. It's what definitely made the original Japanese drama so good, especially since these four individuals have very distinct and unique personalities. I'm just scared this version will make things super angsty, and that it won't be able to capture the witty and humorous spirit of the Sakamoto Yuji's original script. Hopefully, it becomes a successful adaptation just like tvN's Mother.

For now, I'm here for Bae Doona and Son Sukku--my amazing badass fave couple from Sense8 (even if they're not paired here hehe)

Saikou no Rikon is one of my all-time fave Japanese dramas, so I hope everyone can also check out the original.

Bae Doona and Sohn Suk-goo had terrific chemistry in Sense8 so it's interesting that they're not paired here. I'm looking forward to seeing how all these characters intersect.

I actually google what you mentioned. And yes, it is true but they denied it.

Not sure if I should be excited or worried. I have followed all of Cha Tae Hyun's drama including the not so great Jeon Woochi. Love his comedic acting even though he was typecasted in most, if not all, of his dramas and movies. This drama will be a new challenge for him.

Love Bae Doo-na too ever since Gloria. She will be great in any character. But it will be interesting to see how the chemistry between this two will work.

I'm visualizing Lee El slipping into her Hwajugi character in the middle of a bitter divorce. "Can I kill him now?"

And Sohn Suk-goo in his Mother character !?!? What a pair :)

Man, whatta cast. I’ve actually never seen Bae Doo-na in anything before but I’ve only ever heard great things. I LOVED Sohn Suk-goo in Mother—he was such a compelling villain and I was hoping to see him in another drama again soon. Lee El is always a delight.

I haven’t seen Saikou no Rikon, but it’s on the list and has been recommended to me many times. Mother was honestly perfect in every single way and is probably the best drama I’ve ever seen, so here’s hoping this one is good as well!

I was pleasantly surprised to see Bae Doona in this since I’m more used to seeing her in the gritty serious roles but I’m so looking forward to this!

I will watch anything with Lee El in it. Love her low, husky voice with strong facial features. I struggled through Hwayugi mostly for her (and have not lived it down). Why couldn’t have she been the female lead there? I’m looking forward to this one.

I fell in love with Lee El through Liar Game and I want to watch her in dramas that feature her more primarily. This looks close.
But for one thing, the woman has an interesting pick in dramas.

I think I like that the most about her. Her dramas are interesting abc usually enjoyable for me to watch—hwayugi was the exception.

And even when the dramas themselves are meh, the characters she plays herself are always intriguing.

I feel like Cha Taehyun can match the others. He's not been asked to do much in his other dramas that I've seen (Producers, Big Hit), but I remember having moments where I thought he was really good. In any case, this looks great!

Wow, Bae Doo Na with Cha Tae Hyun is so interesting, especially with him not being not-jovial and prickly. Well, if she signed on in the belief that CTH can do it, that's good enough for me.
And always, Lee El ➕➕➕

Have you watched Woman: My Life for My Children yet? They should do a Korean version of that! Hikari Mitsushima & Yuko Tanaka were great.

does this mean they'll (KBS) mess it up?

it really IS weird fun -- the banter is what makes it so great, i hope they keep the "tone & flavor"... especially the main male lead's neuroses! the other couple has their own issues -- and i think people can identify with parts of both relationships.

I am curious how Cha Tae Hyun will do in this dialog-heavy and sometimes serious J-drama. I wondered why J-drama titled 'The Greatest Divorce' while I was watching the show. Somewhere in later episodes, two male leads talked about marriage and mentioned when there was unsolvable problem in a marriage, divorce seemed the only solution, best solution. I wonder if that is what it meant. One dialog I remember was that the male lead said "You know, Don't you think marriage should be man and man, or woman and woman? Then it won't have problem." hee

Great cast! I would literally watch anything for Bae Doona but Best Divorce is actually shaping up to be interesting. I wonder if it will be strange to see Cha Tae-Hyun in a role like this but maybe he was chosen for that reason? Well, so far the casting is brilliant and the writing/directing team seem trustworthy. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.

On a serious note Bae Doo-Na and Sohn Suk-Goo were so AWESOME together is Sense8, that I am afraid this is going to be a disappointment. Bae Doo-Na was like a beautiful, petite Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger has officially been replaced. If Bae Doo-Na is going to have a few fights scenes then that changes everything, no worries.
