[Drama sequels] Drinking Solo 2: An imaginary round two

By WishfulToki

Drinking Solo, the popular and quirky slice-of-life comedy about students preparing for civil service exams and the teachers at their academy classes, was initially intended to have sequel. However, the tragic suicide of the junior PD and the controversial way in which the investigation was led resulted in shelving the idea of a sequel. Rightly too, because it was revealed that conditions on the set of Drinking Solo were — to put it bluntly — horrible.

The writer’s response to the tragic incident was another drama, a “healing” drama about physical therapists and hospital staff who find solace in poetry: You Who Forgot Poetry. Overall, it was an enjoyable drama, but it fell short of the magic of Drinking Solo.

So, Drinking Solo Round 2 will probably never happen, but I can’t help but dream of a second helping.

The nature of the Noryangjin academic setting means that teachers and students come and go regularly. A sequel could easily introduce new teachers, since Ha Suk-jin and Park Ha-sun’s romance seems like a dead-end. As a teacher, I also wish a sequel would give more attention to actual teaching. The gossiping colleagues provided laughs, but at times it could be grating. It was much funnier to see teachers team up to save a course.

The heart of the original Drinking Solo was doubtless the trio of Noryangjin Idiots: Gong Myung, Key, and Kim Dong-young. Students everywhere (and even non-students) could relate to the everyday problems and procrastinating techniques of these students. “Should I study or watch panda videos? Will I be able to afford to not lick yogurt lids when I get a job?”

Their romantic adventures provided much of the tragi-comedy, with Gong Myung’s puppy love, Key’s hapless crush on A-student Jung Chae-yeon, and Dong-young’s ongoing commentary that they were “pathetic idiots.” The original drama left enough room to keep exploring the lives of these three guys — I will personally go and plead with SM to free Key from SHINee activities for my imaginary sequel.

The realism of Drinking Solo gave us some of the most poignant food for thought (hur). The idea of eating and drinking alone is still taboo in many places and cultures. I was struck by the fact that Ha Suk-jin’s character (even if he was “high-quality trash”) ate alone because he needed healing time — no conversation or socializing required. Throughout the drama all the characters drank and ate alone at some point, for several reasons. I was inspired to try it too, but it ended disastrously.

One night a guy sat down at my table while I was enjoying my Chinese buffet, asking why I was alone and where my friends were. I was enraged but didn’t know how to react. In my imaginary sequel I would like to see a female lead with the sass of Soo-ji from Because This Life Is Our First (Esom) who can tell off such guys or punch them in the face if necessary.

Note that I do not condone violence, just leaving someone who wants to be alone, well, alone!

Congratulations. ❤️
I wish for Drinking solo 2 too. I loved Drinking solo which I never thought of watching but accidentally watched.
I have tried eating alone many times but I can observe all the eyes on me pointing why the heck she's alone? so I opt taking take outs or eating fast (usually I'll be in hurry only)

I know that people are watching me when I eat alone but I Just Don't Care. It's not that I don't have anybody who would eat with me, but I'm by myself because I've chosen to be.

Over the years I don't mind eating alone but still I feel somewhat awkward sitting alone in a nice crowded restaurant. I should learn from you. :)

Oh I have done it again, just not late at night in a semi-empty place.
But I do think it depends in which culture you are, and whether you are in a busy city where nobody cares, or a small town where people might think it's their duty/right to bother you.

1

Yes !! It surely depends on the culture and the city.
Now as I'm staying away from home and my place I've started eating out alone and I don't mind anyone.

Nice write-up @wishfultoki!

I really related to the need to eat alone. I'm an introvert and used to do a job where I had to do a lot of talks in front of large crowds of people - like Ha Suk-jin in his teaching job - and the only way I could recharge was to be by myself for a bit.

I never went quite as far breathalising myself but would go to a good restaurant alone, have a nice meal with a decent glass of wine and thoroughly enjoy it. And would wonder why everybody seemed to think that this was strange...

I'm not sure about wanting a sequel to Drinking Solo, but I have always been intrigued by the idea that just passing an exam would make you suitable to be a civil servant. So a drama about these misfits in their first jobs would be something that I'd definitely watch.

Especially if Key was in it. Ti-ru-ri

@cloggie & @wishfultoki - as a fellow introvert who has to talk too often and argue too much for her job, I can guarantee you that dining alone with nice food is very relaxing.

It does feel odd the first few times and you'll get a couple of looks plus the occasional ass who asks you what you're doing on your own *cue eye roll* but mostly you'll be left alone. ^^ I've been eating out alone every once in a while since I was on an internship in Vietnam at the age of 22, and had no one for company anyway. Trust me on this - and go do it.

Will I be able to afford to not lick yogurt lids when I get a job?

The secret to being able to afford not to lick yogurt lids is to save money -- by licking yogurt lids.

I remember reading about the terrible circumstances surrounding the drama. I haven’t watched this because of it, actually. Although, I enjoyed both the Let’s Eat series and Poem a Day, and probably would like this one as well. Thank you for such a well-written essay. It’ll go on the perpetual “list.”

It's on my list too. I'm sure if I were to represent my list mathematically it would involve a race between Achilles and a tortoise. Zeno's race course has nothing on a MyDramaList.

I loved the trio most of all. I do think it would be great to see them pass the exam at some point. Imagine Key going into an office job. Diruri!

I was on the fence about watching this drama but now thanks to your interesting description of it I will. I personally love to eat alone, and don't generally run into problems. Sometimes the only way to save your sanity is to make time just for yourself. I find mealtime works well for that.

I think you will enjoy it then. Just be sure you had something to eat before, or eat while you are watching... I loved to come back home in the evening and sit down with my dinner while watching this drama.

If there's a second season, I want the story is about Noryangjin trio. I LOVE THEM! They, who actually made the show alive. I'm not favoured of the love story between Ha Suk-jin and Park Ha-sun. Sometimes I wish that this drama is purely about friendship without romance is being involved. The same thing I wish for "Let's Eat." I just love the bonding between people over foods and drinks, nothing more! :)

I also loved the trio. The romance ended up being disappointing for no reason at all. They could have just been colleagues and friends (I actually would have liked that, does there always have to be an office romance?) Anyway, yes, the trio is life.
