Losing love and changing fates in Familiar Wife

I’m always down for a good rom-com with a dash of fantasy to it, so I’m super excited for this show to premiere. Han Ji-min (Mistress) plays the titular wife in tvN’s upcoming Familiar Wife, and Ji Sung (Defendant) joins her as her time-traveling husband who makes a fateful decision in the past that alters his present. The drama is presented as a “what if” story and romance, and I’m sure there will be plenty of rom-com staples and sizzling chemistry, especially with this creative team and main leads.

I will be really happy if the show carries on the tone of the trailer that’s just been released. It begins on a close-up of Ji Sung, who’s singing a hilariously emotional rendition of Kim Kwang-seok’s 1991 hit “Love Has Gone” at karaoke. Scenes of the couple’s happier days intercut with his needlessly soulful singing, when they would study together in the library, or take breaks outside with him resting on her lap. Right when we get to a sweet moment of them kissing, the clip fast forwards through scenes of their wedding to an irate Han Ji-min yelling at Ji Sung at the grocery store. I would be just as terrified as he looks if she roared at me like that, too. The trailer ends at the karaoke bar with Ji Sung sobbing through the end of the song.

I’m getting some Go Back Spouses vibes from the trailer and plot description, which is a positive thing, and I’m excited to see the story given the writing and directing talent behind it. Credits like Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, Oh My Ghostess, High School King of Savvy, and Shopping King Louis can only be good when you’re hoping for a cute and genuinely funny rom-com.

We also get a glimpse of what the changed present holds for Ji Sung in the posters that have been released. His poster asks, “Things really are better now than before, right?” And Han Ji-min looks over her shoulder and questions, “Do you like me?” In the group poster, Jang Seung-jo (Money Flower) and Kang Hanna (Just Between Lovers) join Han Ji-min in the mirroring images, where all three characters look like they get an upgrade in life after Ji Sung’s fateful decision.

I honestly can’t believe we’re this far along in 2018 already, but we only have about two and a half weeks until Familiar Wife’s August premiere. The fantasy rom-com will follow What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim in tvN’s Wednesday-Thursday slot, and will premiere on August 1. Let the countdown begin!

Oh, for some reason I thought this would be one of those scary murdery dramas. Maybe I'm mixing it up with something else coming up. Super happy to hear it's a rom-com, the trailer looks fabulous!

Here is the thing. I love Ji Sung. I have NO IDEA WHY. I tried to watch Kill Me Heal Me but dropped it because of the screamo screech queen lead. I more or less forgot to continue Entertainer. The only thing I've seen him in is the movie with the song about the panties. And yet, I can sit here and say with 100% honesty and sincerity: I LOVE HIM and I think he's a great actor and I'm going to try this drama.
Here's another thing: I hate time travel dramas. I don't know why. I have NEVER been able to finish one. They have never interested me (in asian dramas or outside of asian dramas, in books in anything time travel has never interested me. I think the only time I've ever been interested in time travel was the *first* time Tempest comes from the future in the old 90s tv show Lois and Clark: the New Adventures of superman).

So, I don't have high hopes of me finishing this drama. But, I'm going to try.

I really wish Ji Sung would just be in something I actually want to watch. He's so talented! I want to support him! But...I can't. :( Its like...I love Christina Aguileras voice but the woman NEVER sings anything I have any interest in hearing.

Help me love you, guys. Help me love you.

Yeah, you know, Entertainer wasn't a bad drama but I never got to finish it neither 😑

That movie with the song about panties was all it took for me to fall irrevocably in love with Ji Sung as well. 😍 I've yet to finish a single drama of his, but time travel is a genre I love and I'm super excited about this already.

I'm hoping he'll change my mind! The best I can think of to say about time travel is its like sports to me. I know they exist. I know others love them. They do nothing for me (except for tennis. tennis is fascinating---may this drama be my tennis).

Ji Sung is so ding dang charismatic. He's enticing just from a photo.

That's sports comparison. 😂 I suppose the present trend of robot dramas are my sports.

Protect the boss is good. Defendant is awesome! Kill me heal me is also great when he is doing that 7 characters. Secret is a good melodrama of his too.

I cant with Kill Me Heal Me. I hate the female leads screamo ways more than I love him. Sigh. And alas, this drama is not my jam either. Act in something I want to watch, dang it!

My PS Partner (movie with the song about panties) is a good movie. Ji Sung acts well too. You should check out his older drama (where he met his wife) Save the last dance for me. It was the first drama I watched him in. I've re-watched that drama like one hundred times.

Oh this is bad!
I know WWWK has to end and be replaced, but! I don't want it to! *dramatic sigh*
The drama that replaces uri show better measure up, cause WWWK has raised the bar of my expectation for the Wed/Thur timeslot.
Main Question: Can this show survive through our expectations?

It is starting to remind me of American movie The Family Man, which is a good thing because I loved that movie.

I love the teaser, especially the scene at the grocery story lol. I can certainly relate to that.

Really excited for this. Love Ji Sung and the rest of the cast is good too. I hope it can break the time travel/fantasy curse at tvN. I don't expect What's Wrong With Secretary Kim numbers but hopefully it's a solid drama with solidish ratings.

YESSSS for this.
And it can come faster. Since they never meant to make the current show about the titular SECRETARY KIM, I'm ready for its final episode.
