Yoon Doo-joon called to enlist this week, Let’s Eat 3 in talks to cut episodes

Boy, life sure is imitating art today. Yoon Doo-joon, lead actor of tvN’s current Monday-Tuesday drama Let’s Eat 3, has been suddenly given his enlistment date in the army… and it’s this Friday, August 24. As a 1989er, Yoon needs to enlist before the year is out, but he was waiting on the results of his test to serve in the police department, which was ultimately rejected. That led to his enlistment date being set with almost no advance notice for later this week, which wouldn’t be a problem save for the fact that he’s in the middle of shooting a currently airing drama. Eep!

As fate would have it, his character in the drama, Gu Dae-young, just enlisted in the army in a sudden turn of events and had to say goodbye to his college friends in a matter of days—entirely a coincidence, since the news of Yoon Doo-joon’s enlistment came out on the same day the episode aired. And because Yoon has already filed for an extension once before (due to a knee injury), he won’t be given a second extension. Which obviously leaves the show in a big bind, as he’s the central character of a three-season-long franchise, and this was promoted as the final chapter that would wrap up Dae-young’s story.

Let’s Eat 3 and tvN have yet to make a final announcement regarding how to deal with Yoon’s sudden enlistment, but it’s looking more and more likely that they’ll have to cut the episode count short. The series was originally slated to air 16 episodes, and just aired Episode 12 on Tuesday. If it can manage to shoot enough footage, there’s a good chance it’ll end with Episode 14 next week, just a week shy of its original plan.

I much prefer this option to letting the drama drag on for an extra week without its main character, because he’s not just a romantic lead or something—he’s the only protagonist we’ve followed around from season to season (and girl to girl). I would hate to watch this show pull a Bad Guy and try to write and shoot around the very obvious fact that its lead actor has gone to army before the show ends its run. It would be the worst way to say goodbye to a beloved character, so fingers crossed for an ending that makes sense and does justice to the storylines we’ve begun.

Yoon Doo-joon released a public apology for causing problems for the drama with his sudden enlistment, and asked fans for their understanding. He plans to spend his remaining days shooting whatever footage he can on the set, and then report for active duty this Friday.

That's rather unlucky, and such a short prior notice term. I wonder how men that work normal jobs do it. Must be hard to have to leave so suddenly! My boss would freak out... But I guess it's common in Korea.

But it's also quite hilarious considering the coincidence.

It's a good thing the show was supposed to end soon anyway, I guess.

Most men go in their first or second year of university for precisely this reason - if they haven't gone yet, it affects their job prospects once they graduate. No ones wants to hire a fellow who'll leave for two years in between his job,

True. For idols though, the most lucrative years (for their companies anyway) are the very years they should enlist. So there’s the disconnect. But I see that most people would enlist during school to not affect their jobs later. I actually knew a kid in college who left us to fulfill military requirements in Korea his junior year. I was a senior at the time. I have no idea what happened to him, and we were faily close. So Let’s Eat 3’s premise of people losing touch due to a 2 year military stint is pretty accurate as well.

Or you could be Yoo Seung Ho and leave early during those awkward years of is-he-a-teen-is-he-a-man and come back a man, ready for any role they throw at him be it chaebol CEO or young college student.

I guess it's different for actors than for singers though, who can be marketed as "cute" when theyre around college age 17-22 ish whereas it may be harder for a 20 year old actor to find a role that doesnt require him to be a high schooler.

Singapore has mandatory military service for the men too but it's right after they graduate from our equivalent of high school, before going to university. While they have to disrupt their youth for 2 years to serve (and I'm deeply appreciative for the sacrifice our men make!), at least it's not so disruptive like having to serve right smack in the middle of uni or career?

Out of curiosity, do guys in South Korea get to choose when they enlist as long as they do so within the window, there's an age limit to enlist by right?

Thank you, girlfriday, for this news from out of the blue. Dang! If it were any more ironic, I'd be seeing rust on my screen as I type this. What a "speak of the devil" real-life twist. It's so far out of left field, it's cosmic.

More power to you, Yoon Doo-joon, and all your colleagues in the cast and crew of LET'S EAT 3. As if filming in the blistering heat were not bad enough. Sheesh.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of these fine folks that they pull off a fitting finale while working against the clock. May everyone stay safe and healthy through to striking the set. Fighting, everyone! Break a leg!

I'm actually hoping that Show does not air this week while YDJ gets his footage in the can, and then the remainder is filmed and edited to leaven his scenes naturally throughout however many episodes are decided upon. That would buy time to mindfully tweak and film the other characters' arcs.

I really need to see Seo-yeon's reconciliation with Ji-woo unfold as organically as intended -- as well as the progression of her relationship with Sun. We only just got to see her back story, for Pete's sake. There has to be more to Sun's as well.

I want to see Dae-young successfully launch his new career, too. He's got a lot to iron out with Sun. They both have a lot on their plates that needs attention.

I want to know where Byung-sam has been since college, and what Jin-seok is up to as well. I'm not ready to summarily kiss them off. The mechanical engineers' soccer club has to get back together, doggone it. Don't skimp on it, Show.

Take a breather so LE3 can culminate in the soup-to-nuts fashion it deserves. Please. This lovable bunch of characters, and the dedicated cast and crew behind the scenes, deserve nothing less. I want to be able to savor this drama instead of ending up with Rushed Ending Bellyache/Heartache.

If I had my druthers, in an alternate universe, tvN would air a SPLISH SPLASH LOVE encore to cut some slack this week. Oh, right, that's an MBC production. In my dreams. LOL.

This is a bittersweet turn of events for all parties concerned, not least YDJ's family and friends, as well as his professional colleagues. Highlight and its fans will be missing him as well. The show must go on, but I'm sorry his personal life is getting the short end of the stick. That's dedication.

My hat is off to you, Yoon Doo-joon. Godspeed to you as you fulfill your civic duty. And thank you for leaving us on an up note with LET'S EAT 3. I have loved it to bits, along with Koo Dae-young. I cannot imagine anyone else playing the part, and appreciate your portraying this memorable character for three delicious "courses."

It was so weird cuz I watched the episode after I heard the news and all the time I was like "WOAH did this crazy.... how did they unintentionally do this???"

He will have so much to wrap up in the coming 2 days- the shooting, his idol activities, plus he is the CEO of his company so that would be an added responsibility and omg how will he even get time to spend with friends and family! I wanted to see this drama wrap up well and for Doojoon to have some rest after filming before he went… It’s been confirmed that the drama will be shortened to 14 episodes. I hope his service goes well without any problems.

I feel terrible for everyone involved. I would have thought you’d get more notice. It’s not like the military doesn’t know when they have people leaving the service. And they’ve been at war for so long and mandatory enlistments don’t just happen in a day. I wonder if this happens frequently? So do business owners have men up and leaving their workplace and they have to scramble every time to fill their spot? It makes no sense to me. Even a month notice would be better. Anyway, Doo joonie, I’ve enjoyed this season immensely, so be safe and we’ll see you in two years!

Highlight that is a group that YDJ belongs to recently had a scandal of their university. They were suddenly suspected that the uni had done a sort of deal to make them graduate despite of their low attendants. That was a sudden scandal and that did not make sense to me at all. I felt that some one suddenly pushed the topic to be scandalous. They got in to an uni during the time they belonged to Cube Ent but they left there roughly two years ago and established their own agency.
That means that they are probably hated by the Cube and a lesser extent by other agencies( because they dare had a gut to be independent). This also means that they do not have a pull to those enlisting decision due to the fact that they do not belong to a bigger agency. Anyway, withing a week or so after the uni scandal, we are hit with this enlisting news!
I have heard that both YDJ and YYS( lead singer of Highlight) were called in to interviews for the enlistments and both wished to be in the civic duty and YYS ’ wish was granted but YDJ's was declined( why, he has knee injury!) and he has to do a military duty. It's truly a drama becomes a reality!!!
I find it so heartbreaking when I heard this news. Not only I felt so bad for DYJ but I feel so sorry for other members of Highlight ( I think others are doing activities in Japan )
I also think that he must feel that he caused so much headache to the cast and producers etc in the LE3 . He is a very responsible man, I can feel his heavy hearts for others involved.
LE3 is very well crafted drama and I really like it very much. I will watch it till the end. Even if the last two eps are not good due to the time constraint, I am sure that all guys involved has given their best shots.
Good luck, and be very safe , YDJ. We cannot wait to see you back.

First off, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! No proper resolution to Let's Eat 3, which I think we'd all agree has been the best one of the franchise!

Secondly, such short notice is really unnecessary. How will he be able to wrap up his professional and financial obligations so quickly?! That's insane!

Thirdly, I also feel really badly that he won't be able to spend any time with friends and family before his enlistment.

But, Koo Dae Young...I mean....Yoon Doo Joon, I shall wait for you!!!! Girlfriends may come and go....but fangirls are forever! ;)

This is just a giant kdrama-like conspiracy. One of the enlistment officials hates the drama and so to ruin it, made Yoon Doo-Joon's enlistment this Friday, before the drama has finished. He signed the papers with a flourish and then sat back in his seat with a satisfied smirk on his face. "Mwahaha, now no one will like the drama like me!"

mte

I read people saying that doojoon didn't accept the project at first because of his enlistment but the production took the risk because they wanted to guarantee another season before he's gone for 2 years. pretty sure everyone involved knew about this scenario of him having to suddenly go in a couple of days but decided that it was still worth the risk.

I only feel bad that he probably had a crazy schedule because of the drama, it will be even crazier now and he will go straight to military training. praying for his health.

Wow, there are still countries with this stupid Military Service rule?
I will never understand this, forcing people to waste years of their lives for something completely unproductive.
I have done my Military service (16 months) in my European country back in 1994 and it was the same thing then: 3 months of interesting training (learning the basics) and 13 months of sitting around mindlessly, learning nothing and losing income opportunities.
I am lucky my work allowed me to return after the 16 months.

Just make the Army a JOB, for professionals who really want to be there.
