Gong Hyo-jin considers becoming single mom for KBS rom-com-thriller

Has it really been two years since we saw Gong Hyo-jin? I’ve rewatched Jealousy Incarnate so many times that her cute bickering with Jo Jung-seok still seems fresh in my mind. She’s back in the news because her agency, SOOP Management, has announced that Gong is contemplating a new project, KBS’s When Camellia Blooms.

It’ll depict the protagonist Dong-baek (meaning “Camellia flower”) as she deals with a good man, a bad man, and a cheap man in her life. Gong Hyo-jin has received an offer for the main character Dong-baek, who is also the manager of a bar called Camellia. Even though she’s an orphan and a single mother who is raising her son alone, she’s the type of woman who knows how to love and comfort. At first glance, she may seem to be a soundless pushover, but she has a quiet strength and decisiveness when protecting herself and her own.

I’m excited because When Camellia Blooms is being written by Fight My Way’s writer Im Sang-choon. The PD on the project is Cha Young-hoon of Baek-hee Has Returned and Are You Human Too. I’m also intrigued because it’s being described as a rom-com-thriller. There have been several single-mother dramas that I’ve really enjoyed recently (Mother, Marriage Contract), so I’m hoping this one will have the same caliber of quality.

Although there were some rumors that When Camellia Blooms would air early next year, the broadcast period has been pushed back to next September.

Oh! Awesome! I haven't seen any single-mother centered rom coms in dramaland. Rom com leads are usually young and single ("never been kissed" single à la Secretary Kim) - though we've been seeing quite a departure from that recently (à la Because This Life is Our First) . This is the next step, perhaps? ^^; Looking forward to this one!

It's a rom-com where two of the leads are divorced and one is not at all young.

Oh! Awesome. I remember Beanie posts when it aired, but I wasn't watching it then, and scrolled past. 😅 should check this out.

You should. It is one of the dramas that is better watched later and by itself. I guess it suffered on DB as the fanwalls dissected and compared it too much. But I loved it a lot.

Hmm I won't call it a rom-com but 'Thank You', again starring Gong Hyo Jin was single mother- centric :)

Love that drama and how I learn of GHJ!!

It's excellent. But a tear-jerker if I remember correctly. It's what solidified Gong Hyo-jin as my favorite actress and brought my attention to the wonderfulness that is Jang Hyuk.

You could see 'thank you', GHJ's another project where she plays a young mom to a kid who has cancer.

It's really good and not as depressing as it sounds/could have been.

(the kid is actually HIV-positive - doesn't have cancer)

I thought it was truly a romance drama and considering my love for gong hyo jin and angsty jang hyuk, this was like a double bonanza for me. You can't ignore the cancer part but that's life, but all in all if you're going through a drama slump GF, maybe you could take a look.^^

I’m always amazed by how k-drama writers come up with the reason why 30+ old people have never been kissed 😀

😂😂😂 Past trauma is the number one reason I've seen. When it's explained at all. Many dramas just treat it as the most natural thing ever.

To be honest, many of my female friends are single and never date kiss and we are getting to 30, so that does not sound so strange to me. :D

Haha, it's true here! My friends they just don't feel the need to date, and feel more happy match-making, ... Or some wants to date but destiny hasn't called yet... I think...

One More Happy Ending is about a divorcee and a single father, the second lead is also a divorcee.

The rom-com thriller tag sounds odd but the premise seems heart-warmingly amazing and GHJ is an incredible actress with a magnetic pull. She'll nail it!

This sounds like sth right up her alley what with her being the queen of rom-coms and having played a single mother in that gem of a show Thank You and also in a movie if I remember correctly!

Can't wait to have her back on my screen!

This is another «Seo Hyun jin» in my life. Both actresses are quite good, have been in successful dramas and have tons of fans, but I just cannot like them.
😖
I don't know why.

I saw Gong Hyo-jin in «Thank you», and I watch a couple of episodes of «the producers», but actually, I couldn't finish because of her (at that time I was not so fond of IU like I am after My Ajusshi, so, maybe I will try again, but just because of IU)...
Anyway... this plot is quite attractive. But I don't think I will watch it.
Nevertheless, I wish all the fans lots of fun with this one!!🙂😀😊🙋

Never watched master sun, since it has paranormal elements. I don't watch anything that has to do with witchcraft or similar stuffs, because of my religious convictions. But... also because of her. 🙈 I also didn't watch jealousy incarnate because of her, even though I wanted because of GKP 😐
The worse is, I just don't know why, but I don't like her, even the look at her I don't, and she looks ok... I wish I could have at least her hair!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Anyway, there are plenty of dramas to watch! Thanks for the chat 😄

Single-mother setups can be REEEEAAAAALLY good if done right ("Marriage Contract") :)
I can't put my finger on it, but I have a gut feeling that another actress is actually better suited for this role. Gong Hyo Jin Beanies, please don't get me wrong, I love Gong Hyo Jin, but something just doesn't do it for me to have her in such a meaty single-mother role

She has done the MOST meaty single mom role, though, in Thank You.

She's the unmarried single mom living with her HIV positive girl and her own grandma, sustaining the stigma and hardship in a small seaside town. Sounds depressing but it's very uplifting how she positively raises the little girl and manages to find even the thinnest ray of sunshine in life. Really good performance and GHJ-esque. The bonus is the very sexy and antsy boarder in Jang Hyuk, plus the very green Shin Shun-Rok.

This is one gem of a drama that I re-watch every now and then.

I couldn't finish Thank You, it broke my heart! It cut me to pieces when her daughter fell down and started bleeding, Gong Hyo Jin couldn't go to her and just kiss the pain away. One day when I feel tough enough and need a good cry, I will continue watching.

I don't usually like pushover characters but I LOVE Gong Hyo Jin. I know she is typecast in most of her roles but I hope this one will be a bit different like her role in ITTL. She is a great actress and I watched Jealousy Incarnate twice - for JJS though...

Has it been that long since Jealousy Incarnate? Time seriously flies! My housemate was crazy over that show and every time I peeped at her screen, it made me laugh, it was so ridiculous but it was Gong Hyo Jin and Jo Jung Suk you know, you had to stick it through. Can't wait to see her back on screen though, I hope they show some beautiful mother-son moments, family scenes always get me in the gut.
