Lee Min-ki and Seo Hyun-jin find each other in Beauty Inside

Despite my disappointment with the changes in the upcoming drama adaptation of The Beauty Inside, I can’t help but get all fluttery when I see Seo Hyun-jin (Temperature of Love) and Lee Min-ki (Because This Life Is Our First) together onscreen. Maybe if I just think of this as a new romance drama with these two leads rather than an adaptation of one of my favorite films, I’ll be able to enjoy it better?

The new JTBC Monday-Tuesday drama is based on the sensitive, romantic film of the same name about a man who wakes up wearing a different body every day, and the woman who loves him despite his outer appearance. The drama adaptation is described as a romantic comedy and flips the genders, so Seo Hyun-jin will play a woman who changes in appearance, but it’ll only happen to her once a month for a week at a time. She’ll also get to return to her original body after the change each time, which is a significant departure from the film.

The premise is described as “a special romance between a woman who lives with others’ faces for one week every month, and a man who can’t recognize others’ faces for twelve months out of the year.” I have no idea if Lee Min-ki’s recognition problem is metaphorical or literal (what, face blindness is a thing!). I’m also really excited about Seo Hyun-jin’s reunion with PD Song Hyun-wook of Oh Hae-young Again, the drama that shot her career to new heights.

The show released its first teaser, which sums up the premise pretty nicely. Lee Min-ki and Seo Hyun-jin meet on a busy street, and as he approaches her, she shifts into a young girl, a man, and an elderly woman. But he just smiles and continues ahead until he reaches her and says, “It’s okay. I’ll recognize them all,” and gives her a hug. Awwww. I’m in. I knew I would be though—I’m such a sucker for this story!

Beauty Inside will follow Life on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning October 1.

I’m interested to see how the drama adapts this premise as well. I loved the film, but I think that going a different direction in the drama will help it stand out and not be compared to the film.

For me, it seems they will divert from the film almost totally. Even when they change the sex of the person who suffers the transformation, it is totally another story! And making her change only for a week every month?!! That it is not a serious challenge to the couple (once they are a couple), once he understands her situation.
It feels a little bit boring making it that way... 😥

I.....am not feeling this at all. They are taking away all the elements that made the film so great and special. Life, love, sexual attraction and the physical aspects that the female lead was dealing with while loving and trying to adjust to something that she was not use to.

The series is taking away all of that and promoting it as a comedy.

*sigh* Ummm...no.

I agree w @larelle79 . Altering the premise took away too much of the issues that the changing and non-changing leads had to face. The changing lead was depressingly hopeless that his crush would understand his situation and then when he thought all was going great and the relationship was advancing, the nonchanging partner was suffering from trying to remain understanding. All of that will be unimportant in this story because they only have to endure short periodic inconveniences. I feel like they took the title but left the main point.

I was wondering if I was the only one who felt that way. I cannot explain why, but Seo Hyun Jin just affects me negatively.

In order to decide whether to watch or not, I may do what I've lately started doing. Wait 3 episodes in and then if reviews are not too bad, dive into episode 4. If by that time the characters have settled and found their pace and the plot is unfolding well, I will usually continue or even go back to check out the missed episodes. But if episode 4 does not engage me, I will probably not continue.

"assuming" you are right.. correct?

Why does LMK has to do anything with SHJ's life?.. her persona and her acting is her talent.. i didn't like her in oh hae young, or doctor kim.. and no matter which actor she stars with, her acting is her thing..

Also, while Park Shi hoo is the case you are trying to highlight and so is YC.. LMK's case was dropped right? Now, it would be up for debate if the court was biased, or you - the ones who blame him, or others - the ones who refuse to blame him..

the most logical and correct step from the court of law perspective is to go with the law right? Because atleast in this case, you don't come with evidence

Oh boy! I guess i am not the only one in the SHJ 'hate' bandwagon! I honestly feel terrible for disliking someone for no reason BUT I JUST DON'T KNOW WHY!!!!

Lee Min Ki affects me extremely negatively. He was doing his military duty in public service and went out at night in a club in Busan and the official word is that he ‘hooked up’ with a girl there. Except afterwards she said he had sexually assaulted her so you can see this is shady already. He was later cleared of all charges. We all know that most rape cases are word vs. word, consent isn’t even considered. We are talking about a country where the DA asked one of Yoochun’s victims why didn’t she prevent the rape by moving her pelvis around and that a bathroom cubicle is too small place to rape!
Apparently she ''filed the charges mistakenly''. According to LMK’s agency, she has since redacted her statement and we have received an apology from her. In the future we hope that such misunderstandings will not happen.”

A misunderstanding, my ass.

First of all, who the fuck misunderstands about a hook up and an assault ???? Like, these two are as different as day and night, like wtf. And it was a believable enough accusation that the police started an investigation. They don’t do that unless they think the plaintiff stands on worringly serious grounds. Of course there is always a doubt and they investigate that as well but they don’t investigate every time someone comes with a hook up story you know ?

Second of all, she apologized and ??? Usually when someone press charges ‘mistakenly’ ( like I can’t get over how laughable the whole sentence is ) there are repercussions. The police isn’t too happy about it, and neither are the accusees usually.

So, why was it a mistake ? Apparently : “Lee Min-ki did go to a club in Busan but the woman who accused him of rape said his name by mistake and cancelled the charges right away. She even apologized to him.”
How. Do. You. Say. A. Name. By. Mistake. During. A. Sexual. Assault. Police. Investigation. Especially the name of a bloody top star on top of that ???

So. I’m about 99.99% convinced Lee Min Ki is a rapist who has the luck of being backed up by powerful people, who probably threatened or paid that girl into suddenly ‘realizing’ that she said the wrong name.

I’m leaving him 0.01% of benefice of a doubt, cause what do I know, maybe she did make a mistake ( sure, right ) and maybe he isn’t actually a trashy human being.

Not all rape cases go unaccounted for. LMK is a nobody compared to Kim Hyun Jung. He is suffering. While each one is sensitive to different set of triggers, but this happens everywhere, not just Korea. What do you say about the case in USA where the rape was proved, the boy accepted, but guess what .. every tom, dick , and harry pleaded for the future of the boy because he is a stanford student.. and the judge was an alumni. Ya, he got to go scotfree.

Murderers also go unaccounted for... the point here is, you have strong feelings towards something but unlike other cases, there is nothing in white to point fingers at him unlike YCs case (with multiple witnesses), KHJ, or PSH. So,you can't blame others with this regard

It seems that others at the club were also named as suspects. Maybe she didn’t see clearly who it was? Both the police and the victim later said it wasn’t him, so it likely wasn’t him. It's so interesting that we feel the same way and cannot explain why. On rewatching some bits of Oh Hae Young Again/Another Oh Hae Young, I think it could be that there are times she seems 'false'. It's not always or even often, but there are times when I don't understand that expression or it's out of place. Maybe it becomes obvious now and then that she's 'acting', which takes us out of the story. Or the vibes she produces seem off ... somehow rubs me (us?) the wrong way. Or I'm just guessing wildly!!! 😂

I don't find DB to be a place of 'gross fangirls." Usually stories of sexual assualt are taken very serious and there is much intense and thoughtful discussion. Obviously sexual assualt can get us into a pretty emotional and angry place (at least I go there myself), but it would be worth considering that many people may be unaware of the charges or feel like they need more information (which was hard to find in English report).

Yeah, that’s why I got replies below that indicate otherwise. Lets face it, there are many people who keep supporting trash even after they know of their crimes. Polanski, R.Kelly, Woody Allen and the list goes on and on and on. There are still Park Shi Hoo and Yoochun supporters because to fangirls, these women are ’just lowly prostitutes’. Gosh this angers me so much and my blood is boiling. Normally someone who went in public service and went clubbing and raping someone during service time would have been destroyed. Then again, that disgusting Lee Kyoung Young who raped a 17-year-old girl, who had been forced into child prostitution, is still getting employed and even lauded. DISGUSTING. Now excuse me for getting emotional but it’s only natural. I’m surprised that these people I replied to are being so nonchalant or even obtuse.

I really hate rapist and abusers and these kind of men who take advantage of women weather those cases go public or not. I hate the sin they commit. And I hate to know whatever we know it is only the peak of an iceberg.
It is very sad. I suffered from abuse myself when I was a child and whenever I remember I feel an even greater hate toward the sinner who is already dead by the way... for me, better that way.
But... on the other hand, I don't like to live full of hatred.
I have to breath and not to think about it that much, so that I can survive. It is not that I can forgive something like that, for I can't. At least not in my personal case... But I can't remember it or think about it all the time. It is just that bad.
So.... I don't know if I am in the position to give you the same advice after reading your comments (and believe me, I understand. I have been a victim too)...
Pray about it,, for the victims in Korea, in Africa, everywhere... let's just pray for them. And, well...
Just... thanks for sharing.
Each one of us will act upon what they know and feel and have experienced.
Thank you again.

@javinne
Thank you. As a survivor myself, I deeply appreciate your comment that didn’t excuse anything.
I’m shocked I get called out for being emotional about this matter, that I apparently am a ’troll’ that's harming sexual assault and harassment survivors’ cause by pointing out the hypocrisy in some of these comments. Again, sorry for my harsh words, you are a compassionate person. Thank you.

1

I'm sorry to hear you've been through something like this. I have too - though the degree of severity is lower, it has left its impact in my life - and so have women very close to me; and I still stand by my point in the earlier comment. While your anger is understandable - I did think you might have a legitimate reason for it - taking it out on/"trolling" commentators on the net will not help your war or bring the commentators to your side.

Sorry for continuing on a different thread. I wouldn't have commented at all but your reply was serious enough to call for a response. This is my response to your reply to me earlier.

I was honestly worried about how they’d make it work and sad I’d miss out on a drama starring such an amazing pairing but the tweaks made to the original plot and seeing the trailer makes me less indifferent and more anticipatory towards the drama. Lee Min Ki is one thing but then you throw in Seo Hyun Jin, I don’t think I can resist checking it out.

Don’t be deliberately obtuse. These people I replied to apparently love LMK, that sketchy scoundrel, but they have negative feelings for Seo Hyun Jin, who has done nothing wrong. I’m sorry but I cannot understand someone, who loves a guy with rape charges but can’t stand a Baeksang award winning actress just because. This clearly shows the gross sexism but then again, a lot of people are ready to defend that pedophile rapist Polanski because art~ FYI, Park Shi Hoo was caught on a cctv for dragging an unconscious woman into his hotel suite but because he has a rich dad and connections, he was cleared. same with LMK. For people who are interested in the acting scene, who probably jumped into the me too train, have surprisingly sexist views but this is normal on dramabeans full of idiot fangirls.

1

@dilnazdilruba - You might get you point across better if you spoke (wrote) in a nicer manner. I see the substance of what you are saying, and do think it is something that should/could be discussed; but am disinclined to enter into a discussion with you given your tone.

I don't see how attacking other commentators on the internet is going to help you wage war against sexism, the preferential treatment of men, etc, or even bring anyone over to your side/way of thinking. On the contrary, this sort of behaviour is probelmatic because it makes the struggle HARDER for those who are in fact, fighting it. You make them seem unreasonable and emotional trolls, not people to be taken seriously.

7

@greenfields
There is a saying ’’if the shoe fits’’. If the shoe does not fit, don’t wear it. I apologize for my harsh words but it’s tiring to see how people love trash on kdrama sites and communities but immediately after hate bandwagon some actress who did absolutely nothing wrong to anyone but just give ’unlikable vibes’. I’m not trolling at all and it’s unfortunate that that’s all you got out of my comments.

Dill, I took the time to read through your comments above and below and I am truly sorry to hear you have been a victim yourself. I hope no one has to go through what you have gone through. For that I offer you support and hope you find peace within yourself.

What I do not support however is the way you have resorted to calling us names. I haven’t seen anyway calling you names so I don’t understand why you had to stoop to that level to hone in your point. And as for disliking an actress I don’t understand why everyone needs to think like you. So I don’t like an actress or an actor - how does that effect you? Just like you said ‘if the shoe fits’ if you don’t agree with someone just walk away. And as for LMK or PSH or the other guy you are talking about, let people make up their own minds. You have shared the information and let people reasearch it and make up their own minds. Please don’t push your ideals on others. Everyone has the right to choose. Peace.

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate this change to the underlying concept?

No matter how many times I try to parse it in my head, I fail to come up with a romantic angle on it:
1. Story of a man who loves a woman despite her monthly changes
2. Story of a man who gets to pretend he's with a new woman every month
3. Don't get me started on her inevitable turn as a teenager

Yes, you are allowed to be annoyed at me. I don't mind.

I always knew dramabeans was full of deluded oppa stans but I didn’t know it was this bad. That even a Baeksang best female actress on TV winner is not good enough to a sketchy dude.

Yes, I too will enjoy it as a separate story, based loosely on the fantastic Korean film based on the innovative American film.

Changing into a different person for one week out of every month? That's nothing too unusual, it sounds to me like what happens to many women of childbearing age! 😂

Jokes aside, I think the thematic conflict of the story is very different, if someone just changes for one week per month, rather than having no (or no longer a) single/constant visual/physical identity at all and constantly changing throughout life. I mean the former sounds like it could be a fun game at times (and tiring at others), the latter sounds like a mind-you-know-what!

The reason and origin and resolution of the problem was different in the American and Korean stories as well. Perhaps this one will be more similar to the US version, when the changing hero turned back into his original self (Topher Grace!) at the end.

Looks enjoyable though. I'm in!
