Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 8-14, 2018

Is it just me or is the drama cycle feeling extra crowded this week? Two more shows were added to the mix, and I officially feel like I’ll never be able to keep up. Cha Tae-hyun and Bae Doo-na’s rom-com Matrimonial Chaos was one of those premieres, coming in with surprisingly low numbers. Perhaps the slot is still suffering from its last show Lovely Horribly, which ended with less than 4 percent. In brighter news, 100 Days My Prince crossed into double digits over at tvN.

My Secret Terrius and Heart Surgeons still seem to be at war, with the former winning by just a few percentage points. Since these shows, and the other Wednesday-Thursday competition, are doing pretty well, I’d say viewers are in the mood for action and dark melos these days. Lastly, there isn’t much change for weekend shows, though numbers are slowly decreasing, as shown with Room No. 9. Then again, what else is new?

I feel like two many shows killing the mood. There are nearly 20 dramas per week, it's impossible to catch up. Before there were only 3 dramas per night, I might watch 1 or 2 skim through the other one. Now Im only pick the drama that I like the leads. I dont even bother to check others even though I might missing out some good ones. The more drama available the more viewers have less desire to watch.

Right now I watch 100 days, Terrius and Million Stars. I check out others a bit but they dont really click with me.

The ratings are getting worse why more and more network try to make dramas?

Completely agree. Unfortunately, I'm turned off by the number of dramas that are available to watch. As a result, I won't even make the effort to check out all of them. Another issue is that now the cable dramas are also in the weekday timeslots. So instead of picking shows from just the big 3, you now have to consider the cable shows - which amounts to 5-6 different dramas options per night.

I doubt korean viewers mind having more options to choose from than just the big 3 during certain time slots.

Totally agree. While ardent daily watchers may have a tougher time choosing what to watch among the increased options (although they'll watch something anyways), more options bring more viewers (those who only watch for storylines or actors they find more interesting). On average, increased competition leads to increased quality.

The problem is in the quality of the story. Strong characters are great, but do they show virtues like balanced duty to conscience and authority? Balanced heroism and realism? Balanced scenery and face shots? Balanced multiple threads of other stories? Most of the Kdramas these days fail in all but one of these categories. It's too few interwoven stories per drama, too much plastic face, too much of heroes getting unreasonably lucky, too much emphasis on 'if an emotion is strong enough it gets the job done' in characters. Where did the likes of City Hunter go? In that story there was scenery. There were numerous intersecting plots. There were real risks for the hero and the heroine didn't project 'strength' by emotion but by actual resolve. The scenes weren't just face shots, and the second and even through fourth leads got a good place in the story. The moral of the story was awesome too: a vendetta with a son caught between concience, love, authority, practical limitations, etc. Morality won. Authority won. Family won. Even the bad guys won what was best for them. And plus, I heard the soundtrack was fantastic. But the shows these days .... what am I watching them for?

I try to keep up with the ones I like best, and save the others for such as rainy day weekends or the sure to come Drama Desert which seems to run in cycles.

1 dozen (prime time)kdramas + 1 dozen jdramas + 1 dozen chinese dramas + 5-6 thai, taiwanese dramas +movies +english shows. I'm not adding those daily soap operas and variety shows as well as webdramas and specials.
There there are dramas who do not get to reach the foreign audience.
Too much food for a fan of asian dramas.

When i look at this whole stuff i start to feel frustrated and annoyed. This whole stuff is only for a professional getting paid to watch and review shows.

Mon-Tue - private channels are doing better or competing with free public channels.
Crossing 10% has become too difficult for public channels and i think only TVN is confident about 10% these days.

I can expect major layoffs in future in various production houses.

I feel bad for the small production houses who are working for the big 3s.

Studio Dragon is getting most of tVN's shows since C.J E&M is funding it too so they are not going anywhere.

I hope jTBC will keep Drama House. Pretty Noona was a miss in quality but the rating was good and they have produced some of the best shows for jTBC.

JTBC actually own Drama House (it's their in house production company) so I think they're safe. Currently they seem to produce around half of their shows.

Wow, I didn't know that. Thank you!!!

Now I get why they weren't involved in PD Ahn's "Heard It Through the Grapevine" because it was over at SBS.

So it's just not me that felt that way. Seriously i almost lost interest in k-drama with too much dramas that airing at the same time. Just like you, i also choose & watch drama based on the actors that i like the most, not because of the drama itself cause it quite tiring to catch up with all those dramas. Anyway, maybe in the near future, maybe, if i have some free times, i will reconsider to watch it. Maybe.

Thanks for your ratings report, SailorJumun!

There are so many shows airing now that I think the respective market shares have shrunk. I don't know whether it's cause or effect. With so many choices, viewers may be suffering from paralysis by analysis while trying to figure out which to watch.

I'm really glad to see that 100 DAYS MY PRINCE has topped 10%. For cable, that's impressive. I'm thoroughly enjoying the show and its cast.

Having many choices should be a good thing but I'm mentally feeling the drama fatigue syndrome even though I'm only watching one show lol.

And I'm pooped out because I'm live-watching 9 if I don't count MATRIMONIAL CHAOS after the first week. The KPMAS (Kiara-PakalanaPikake Mutual Admiration Society) covers the extremes of Kdrama watching. I think the greatest number of shows I have ever live-watched was 11. ;-)

I'm really enjoying the OCN and JTBC offerings right now. The Guest, Beauty Inside, The Third Charm is my preferred weekly drama cocktail. With half-hour viewings of Fox Bride Star thrown in.

The public network stuff I feel I could just catch later.

Somehow I always seem to fall for the dramas with the worst ratings; Sadly, it's happening frequently these days with the networks struggling.

There are too many choices and ways to watch. Same thing has happened with ratings in the U.S.

I also think streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have played a PART in US tv ratings decreasing. I wonder if that might also be the case in Korea especially since the country has the fastest internet speeds in the world.

My life’s been extremely stressful these days so what do I watch? The darkest, most stressful dramas on K-TV... go figure. Guest and Ghost Detective, I guess I want to see people who have it worse than me. 😉

I’m was marginally disappointed that my fav, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, is only pulling mediocre ratings. Then I read that it ranked #1 in online streaming among the 6 new dramas. I wish they could report tv and internet viewership together already, although I understand the difficulties to quantify streaming.

I was also really disappointed about its ratings, but I’m glad that it’s gaining recognition somewhere! If there wasn’t so much competition, and if it didn’t advertise itself as a super melo drama (it really isn’t very melo), TSHLYE could be doing so much better.

Not sure how they count streaming, if at all. I am in the US, and I have not watched an off-the-air or cable show for years - all streaming.

That's a lot of shows! Glad to see that My Secret Terrius is doing well. Its a delightful show that I am currently keeping up with as anyone can see on my fanwall posts. 😉

I have long accepted the fact that I will never be able to watch all the shows premiering. At most I can only watch 4 in a week when RL is less demanding of my time. Currently I am left with two and once I am done with Misaeng, I already have one lined up which I am excited to resume watching, My Ajusshi.

I will pick up Hundred Million Stars once I find enough time and catch up. Its an intriguing show and actively avoiding spoilers when I read thru the fan wall.

It's one of the best dramas on air right now but I can understand why viewers don't watch it at night. I don't scare easily and a couple of scenes have totally creeped me out.

It's clever that they began airing around the start of Autumn and the finale right smack Halloween week (unless it's more than 16 eps). As if the show itself wasn't super atmospheric already. The Guest, imo, is one of this year's best.

When I see a rating report these days, sometimes I told myself that this is a tv rating, which could mean that quite a lot of people watching tv shows through internet are not included in this, while production houses, I hope, would be looking at any watching indicators available: tv ratings, internet views or download, brand power index, etc. to assess ‘success level’ of the production.
.. Idk, I just feel a bit down to think that super low tv rating could cost the crews their jobs..

Speaking of many many shows being offered these days, I should say that I am on a happy side because the lot offerings mean a higher chance of finding a drama to be excitedly watching on weekly basis,,I consider myself a tv addict, but 5-6yrs ago I started to discipline myself on watching (live watching) tv shows (mostly through internet, but not Ntflix): by weekly, max of 1 drama/tvshow each for korean, japan, and wuxia, + American/British. In that case, I can limit my tv watching to 1-2 hours per night.
and thanks to beanies who always come up with reviews on which drama worth to invest the hours to, I rarely have to waste my time on horrible shows ☺️

Here's the page that tracks ratings for Devilish Joy. The show's ratings are pretty good for a MBN drama. (MBN has low viewership and is new to the drama game.)

Dramas I 'm watching are The Guest and Fox Bride Star. Tried Player but fell asleep through ep 1, Million Stars but sleazy male leads don' t sit well with me. I'm waiting for 100days to end so I can watch it in marathon, I feel like it's the type I need to see in one go hah.

My favorite are the beauty inside and the player. Those two drama make me feel excited to wait for the next episodes. I watch its as soon as the episode is realeased. I also watch terius behind me and 100 days prince when I have spare time. For 3rd charm, I think I won't countinue it

Watching several - some of my favorites have lower ratings, such as Hide and Seek & Room #9 (and apparently not very popular on Beans either). But some are on the verge of being dropped or put on hiatus, such as Bad Papa (not a fan of such genres anyway).

A bit saddened to see the low premiere numbers for Matrimonial Chaos, but I admit the show is not going to be for everyone. I can see where it's going to struggle to find an audience, unfortunately, due to the subject matter. A close, intimate examination of the small, precise details of married life/couples, is certainly not everyone's cup of tea.

Many thanks for the ratings report, SailorJumun!

I'm officially back in kdramaland! For me, the more kdramas, the better especially since I'm picky about the dramas I watch. I'm loving the crop of shows right now -- I'm live-watching 100 Days My Prince (WonShim couple is so cute!), My Secret Terrius and The Beauty Inside. Very happy with these three and its been a source of strength and joy especially as work has been really tough lately. Oh, I also watch The Guest but lately, I've been looking to inject a bit more sunshine in my days so the three are my go-to dramas.

I lost my appetite for the new releases after the juicy tandem of My ID is Gangnam Beauty and Still 17. I still haven't found anything to pique my interest and which has an interesting storyline, like This is My First Life. Currently, I am trying to catch up on older series and some Jdramas to fill me up. I try to catch snippets of Beautiful Inside coz I like the lead actress, but it's already the nth adaptation of the story so...
