Jung Kyung-ho cast in tvN’s When the Devil Calls Your Name

Actor Jung Kyung-ho (Life On Mars) has selected his next project, tvN’s When the Devil Calls Your Name. This drama is about a man who sold his soul to the devil ten years ago for youth and success. But as soul collection day draws near, he bargains with the devil for an extension of their contract.

Jung Kyung-ho will play the star composer who has sold his soul to the devil. For the past five years, he’s held top status and has amassed the most royalties in the industry with skills that are almost otherworldly. However, five days before his soul is to be collected, he desperately begins to bargain with the devil using his own life as collateral. The devil’s conditions are this: He must find three other people who have promised to sell their souls and take their contracts.

I like Jung Kyung-ho’s acting style, and I can totally imagine him being absolutely pompous one moment as the star composer and being a complete nervous wreck the next moment when he thinks about his deal with the devil. Also, his recent choices in projects have been absolutely stellar (Life on Mars, Smart Prison Living), so I’m definitely going to tune in on this one.

Human melo drama When the Devil Calls Your Name will be directed by Circle PD Min Jin-ki, and it is scheduled to air sometime in the latter half of next year on tvN.

Yayyyyy for a new project but this just sounds weird!!!
But if JKY has accepted it, it has to be good, right?

The story sounds like something that has been done in movies? But I can't remember which one!!

Also latter half of next year is quite far away!

Hahahaha ikr! It already reminds me of Missing 9 with the possibility of going bad and I stuck with that show (and low-key even liked it) till the end!

JKH makes me watch shows that I would never have! 😄

Missing 9 was sooooo bad! That with one more happy ending are huge flops on his portfolio.

Aww @nemisi I actually really liked One More Happy Ending

4

I liked the ending of Missing 9. When they ran out of story, instead of dragging something on to fill the time they decided to party. Hilarious.

1

One More Happy Ending is good until Ep 12 and should have ended there (just like so many other dramas).

But happy to hear this new drama and can already picture the JKH delivery.

1

This seems to be based on the legend of Faust, who sold his soul to the Devil for knowledge and success. He was due for eternal damnation once his contract was up. It ended badly in some versions and happily in others.

I have read Marlowe's Doctor Faustus and the idea of selling one's soul has been taken up in other books like The Picture of Dorian Grey and more but I was referring to a movie where the hero was a writer or sth... I have forgotten it's name.

Constantine, with Keanu Reeves, or The Devil's Advocate, with Keanu, again?

1

....wasn't that a very early episode of supernatural? Can't quite remember but it also sounds vaguely familiar!

1

Was it a Brendan Fraser movie? I don't know why he came to my mind when I read your description.

1

The basic premise of this drama seems to hew closely to the Marlowe/Goethe Faust premise. Dorian Grey makes no deal with the Devil but instead actively pursues a life of hedonism and sin, with the destruction of his soul reflected only in the painting. Although Oscar Wilde did say that he was partly inspired by Faust.

Lol sorry. I'm a fan of classic literature so I'm really excited that we're getting a kdrama that seems very much inspired by it. Now I wish this were a sageuk instead, with shamanistic rituals galore.

I remember Ghost Rider having a similar premise, where the hero offers his soul in exchange for his father's life. I can't remember watching a movie about a writer with the same theme though.

2

@firefly Yep I think it was a Brendan Fraser movie that I havent even watched completely hehhe!

@noelle Yep you are right and yeah I had completely forgotten abt the Ghost Rider!

@yyishere and @jaejun, not those but it is interesting how so many movies/shows have used this theme!

Also @yyishere annyeong!! how have you been??

Is it the movie Bedazzled?

So, I guess this is the reason he dropped the romcom with Yoo In-na and PD Park Joon-hwa. I trust you, Oppa, always.
You know, I honestly miss you in a sweet-heart-fluttering romance. But maybe, seeing you being desperate choosing between your precious life and some pitiful souls you belatedly realize how much you love them seems worth the wait. I will silently adore you in this, and wait patiently for your next sweet something romance.

Latter half of next year? That seems tooo long to wait for another JKH drama! Sounds like something he'll be brilliant at, as usual. At least now there's something to look forward to. In the meantime, perhaps another JKH marathon is in order.
BTW, he's at the top of my list as favorite actors ever.

"Jung Kyung-ho will play the star composer who has sold his soul to the devil." I wrote this on my wall already but this really reminds me of BTS's Yoongi's solo music + some of his lyrics in the groups songs. I'm instantly sold on this show.

Plus what with him being a composer, I'm hoping for a great OST, in addition to a story I hope to fall in love with.

Ha, I had just looked at the photo and thought he always looks like he's 12, does the man never age?

Instead of selling his soul to the devil, maybe Kyung-ho sold his soul to heaven and is living as an angel on Earth, consistently delivering amazing acting in excellent dramas. He is such a gift to humanity.

My thought exactly. I read the synopsis and immediately thought, "So this is autobiographical, right?" After all, I think that he is one of the best actors in dramaland.

I agree that the drama, "One More Happy Ending," was pretty bad overall but it has one of the funniest first episodes that I've ever seen. I tell people to watch the first episode and the last one and skip everything in between.

There is actually one retelling of the legend, Thomas Mann’s novel Doctor Faustus, in which the main Faust character is a composer. I don’t know how closely this will follow the novel if at all but if it does we might get a good bromance in this drama (Doctor Faustus is told from the point of view of the best friend character, not Faust/Leverkuhn himself).

Might I suggest Jang Hyuk as the devil? Or wait, better yet I would love to see an impish but hard-ass Kim Seul-gi play a devil collecting souls.

As much as I'm delighted in this casting news because I think JKH will do great with this part, I'm really curious about the direction the writing and casting of the devil role, and I hope they take it in an interesting and unconventional direction.

Y'know that description would've given me Faust or Dorian Gray vibes but I saw somewhere that it's the writer from Come Back, Ajusshi. So now I'm imagining Jung Kyung-ho as this wacky, unscrupulous guy tricking others into lending their souls to him even while planning to trick the Devil into letting them all go like Captain Jack Sparrow.

But anyway, he can do both extreme ends of the cool and crazy spectrum so either way it'll be fun to watch him.

According to this HELLOKPOP article WHEN THE DEVIL CALLS YOUR NAME will be broadcast in the first half of 2019:
https://hellokpop.com/tv-movies/jung-kyung-ho-soul-devil-drama/
I am in a bit of Agent mode and trying to figure a way to get Jung Kyung-ho and Yoon Hyun-min (two of my favorites) back together in a drama. I think it is possible. YHM's next drama TALE OF GYERYONG FAIRY (also a tvN production) is pre-produced and scheduled to air beginning Nov. 5, 2018. YHM may be available for JKH's new drama. TvN please make it happen. You have both these guys under contract right now.

I miss him in romcoms like FFI and OMHE, but i'll settle with this. The title intrigues me.

I'll try to tune in for him. After LoM and PP, i think he has learned how to pick his dramas haha. Besides i manage to stick through nearly all his dramas (if not for plot, i stayed for him): Smile You, Heartless City, Missing 9, Falling for Innocence, One More Happy Ending , PP, LoM. The one i couldnt care less is Endless Love which i also tried to watch and jump to his scenes only. Thats how much i like JKH as an actor. Borderline obsessed 🤣.

Anyways, i look forward to see him as a composer and maybe hear him sing. He has a good singing voice as seen in When Love Meets Destiny 🎤 and some OSTs. And maybe he can play the sax too. Hahahaha
